Olaf College students Ella Cereghino ’25 and Jack Fuerstenberg ’26 and alumnus Paul Sullivan ’17 will present at the 2025 Peace Scholars Conference
The Peace Scholars Conference is an annual gathering that brings together student scholars
and community members to explore pressing global issues through the lens of peacebuilding
This year’s conference will begin with poster presentations by last summer’s Peace Scholars, including Cereghino and Fuerstenberg
and Pacific Lutheran University are selected to participate in the Peace Scholars Program
which provides them with an opportunity to spend seven weeks in Oslo
Olaf receive funding each year to participate in the program through the Philip C
which was established in honor of the late Philip Carlyle Smaby
“One of my strongest takeaways from the program is how ubiquitous the importance of dialogue is
We learned about dialogue in the context of economics
and my individual research focused on the role of dialogue in land use and city planning
and collaborative communication plays an essential role in all of these areas and others — even where we may not expect it.”
Cereghino and Fuerstenberg will share the research and projects they completed in Norway last summer
“One experience that has stuck with me to this day was the dialogue that we participated in with local Norwegians as we were able to express our own perspectives on Norwegian and American society while also hearing about how Norwegian perspectives differ from ours,” Fuerstenberg says
“The primary thing that I gained from my time in the program was how to participate in and mediate a constructive dialogue between two or more parties in disagreement.”
Fuerstenberg says the program helped him see a path where his interests in international trade and economics can lead to graduate school and a professional career in academia
the program helped her realize the important role that dialogue plays in the STEM fields
“Through my experiences with research and my experience in the Peace Scholars Program
I’ve come to realize that science feels most valuable to me when it’s paired with dialogue and relevant to everyday questions about how people live,” Cereghino says
Cereghino says her experience with the Peace Scholars Program has led her to consider pursuing environmental policy conflict resolution or research in a government or nonprofit setting
“I would be able to have a role in either communicating science to the public or using it to make practical decisions about how we use and interact with land
I want to work in a setting where I’m able to think about questions through both a scientific lens and a people-oriented lens
taking into account the wide variety of needs and interests that people bring
even to questions that we may think of as primarily scientific,” Cereghino says
as well as a detailed look at the research they conducted in Norway
The 2025 Peace Scholars will be announced at the conference
The Peace Scholars Conference will also include a Peace Scholars Alumni Panel that brings together a distinguished group of program participants who will reflect on their experiences and discuss the ongoing impact of peace studies in their careers and communities
who was a Peace Scholar in the summer of 2016
is now a community organizer with the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota
Sullivan’s work has focused on criminal legal reform
and know-your-rights education for immigrant communities
The Peace Scholars Alumni Panel will be moderated by Thomas Hanson

As paid leave offerings become more robust, HR and benefits leaders are facing new challenges when it comes to administering such benefits
In a survey of 630 U.S. business leaders, Mercer
found that compliance with state and local leave mandates and improving leave administration are employers’ top two priorities when it comes to absence and disability management
employers’ main concern regarding time off was the impact on business operations,” says Rich Fuerstenberg
“As leave programs have become more complex
The rise of paid leave mandates has made compliance a particular focus for leaders
For employers navigating state and local paid leave mandates
especially those with employees across multiple jurisdictions
employers must meet all statutory requirements
such as sending employee notices and submitting required data for state and local reporting
existing ones changing and the states in which employers operate change and expand
Streamlining administration can fuel compliance
as state mandates often overlap with employer-sponsored leaves such as short-term disability and paid parental leave
“To deliver a better overall experience for all parties
organizations should consider private plans to replace state-run programs
which can create a disjointed experience for employees and add complexity for employers,” Fuerstenberg says
Financial considerations cannot be overlooked
contribution rates set by states for disability
medical and family leave mandates are based on the solvency of the state program
“Employers with better experience than the state plan can benefit from private plans that enhance the claimant experience and potentially lower costs,” he says
many employers are finding valuable savings opportunities.”
leave administration is another area of increasing concern for employers
The survey found that 66% of employers cited improving leave administration as one of their top three concerns
That finding comes as paid parental leave surges; it’s now offered by 73% of employers
Also, 32% of employers provide flexible PTO to at least some of their employees, up from 20% in 2021. Under such a policy, sometimes called “unlimited PTO,” employees are permitted to use their discretion in how much time they take off from work
a marked change from prior years when typically only executives or salaried employees enjoyed this benefit
employers are recognizing the importance of PTO in helping employees manage traumatic events
While employers have long provided paid bereavement leave to mourn the loss of an immediate family member (95%)
they have recently started to offer time for other significant losses
the death of an extended family member or close friend (54%) or miscarriage (58%)
The survey also found that there are more fixed company holidays
observing Juneteenth as a company holiday jumped from 9% in 2021 to 41% in 2024
while the percentage of those observing Martin Luther King Jr
the median number of fixed holidays offered by employers has risen from nine to 10 days
“More companies are recognizing the importance of paid leave as a way to communicate their values and priorities to their employees,” Fuerstenberg says
“These initiatives not only benefit employees but also contribute to a stronger sense of community within the organization.”
Olaf College students Ella Cereghino ’25 and Jack Fuerstenberg ’26 have been named Smaby Peace Scholars
The Peace Scholars Program is designed to expand students’ awareness of current issues relating to peace
and human rights through a series of educational experiences in Norway
Two students from five Norwegian-American Lutheran colleges — Augsburg
and Pacific Lutheran University — are chosen to participate
Olaf receive funding to participate in the program through the Philip C
The program gives students an opportunity to study Norwegian perspectives on peace
and dialogue firsthand while spending seven weeks in Oslo
Scholars will also complete a research paper and research presentation on a topic of their own choice relating to Norway and the course content
“I think as we become increasingly affected by climate change and new technological developments
it becomes more and more important to develop trust between scientists and the public and to find solutions that meet the needs of states and parties with conflicting interests.”
Cereghino is majoring in physics with international relations and environmental studies concentrations
Cereghino is interested in pursuing a career in science journalism or foreign affairs with a focus on environmental issues
She is excited by the Peace Scholars Program’s focus on dialogue
it becomes more and more important to develop trust between scientists and the public and to find solutions that meet the needs of states and parties with conflicting interests,” Cereghino says
I’ll get more of a sense for how dialogue can be used in the context of these larger and more complicated relationships.”

Fuerstenberg is majoring in political science and quantitative economics
a leadership development and service organization
He plans to pursue a career in political science and economics on an international stage
He is excited to study in Norway because of its active role in mitigating the effects of injustice on a national and international scale

Everything was so organized and pertinent to what we needed
courteous and very helpful during our emotional and challenging time
They were so prompt on answering any questions and changing things
They were prepared and respected any religious decisions
The process was so seamless and made easy in such a high stress situation
In the past 2 years Springfield has helped us through the death of my Mother and my Father
Their response and help allowed us to focus on the remaining family rather than worrying about details of the funeral and all the notifications that are required upon a death
The atmosphere has been nothing but professional during times of grief
the staff coached me on the next steps and looked after filling in all the government forms that I needed to sign
which took a huge burden off my mind at the time
From the time I called to the completion of all the services
There was a sense of caring from each staff member
I was turning over my Mom to their care and I felt very comfortable with everyone
I felt heard and never felt pushed into any decision
I have always found the team at Springfield Funeral Home to be VERY caring
I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks which funeral home would I suggest they use
No other funeral home I have dealt with even comes close to Springfield Funeral Home
I was made to feel as if I was the only one they had to serve
Everything that was arranged for us was perfect
Thank you for making this difficult time a little more acceptable via your staff’s obvious caring and respect
I liked the personal treatment given to my mother who is 97 years old
I found Springfield employees pleasant and sincere
was that the funeral home would help me get through the paperwork need at this time
Since this was my first experience (with a funeral home)
everything was above and beyond what I expected
Thank you to your team for your kindness to me at a very challenging time
You have now taken care of both of my parents with professionalism and care
Springfield Funeral Home is always professional
We appreciate that you have dedicated staff for all needs from planning the service to completing government paperwork
I am not sure there was anything you could have done to make a very intense emotional time less stressful
Although we hadn’t expected Ken to want a service
when he said we needed to have one for us not him
Your sincerity and compassion meant everything to us
your compassion and professionalism is truly amazing
super professional and caring as each guest arrived
Keep up the good work that you do as it is such an important service you provide
It is still the most difficult time in a person’s life
We appreciated the peace of mind that everything was being looked after
You provide a wonderful service for people going through a traumatic time
The kindness and professionalism shown by the staff at Springfield Funeral Home was exemplary

LLCU donated $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity for the organization’s community efforts planned in 2025 in central Illinois
The funds were presented to Carl Fuerstenberg
Executive Director of the Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity
volunteers and partners to provide affordable and safe homes with efforts on policy reform to remove systemic barriers preventing low-income and historically underserved families from accessing adequate
“We are excited to put this donation into action toward two homes that are nearing completion,” stated Carl Fuerstenberg
“We are looking to have these two homes finished by early spring for new owners.”
“We are grateful for organizations like Habitat for Humanity as the work they do helps to close the gap to home ownership for individuals that otherwise would not have the opportunity to own a home,” stated Chris Smith
“We hope our donation inspires other businesses to donate to Habitat this year - as their efforts truly are vital to our community.”

Actor-writer-director Anna Fuerstenberg's return to Nashville — she worked in Music City in the 1980s — is occasioned by the mounting of her one-woman show
a curious but sometimes moving blend of personal narrative and character studies
Backed by a rear-projected montage of family photos
Fuerstenberg relates the essential history that covers her parents' move from wartorn anti-Semitic Europe in the 1940s to Canada
The script also follows the young Anna's own North American journeys as a theater artist after leaving her family behind in Montreal and pursuing work and higher education in Chicago
The play's heart concerns Anna's later relationship with her mother
a kvetching elder who requires more attention as she ages
The situation forces Anna to forsake her artistic activities in order to help out
which places her squarely up against the medical establishment as she attempts to ascertain the nature of her mother's illnesses and secure the proper treatment
cuts a striking figure in her role as narrator
she efficiently shifts gears and inhabits the story's other characters — primarily her feisty
The show's opening weekend looked more like a workshop production
with Fuerstenberg still finding her beats with the material and relying on occasional subtle prompts from director BJ Rogers
the unfinished look of the staging rarely detracted from the theatrical experience
Consider that a testament to the material's inherent interest
Guerrilla Caregiver will be performed through Nov
Presumably the show's leading lady will be flying absolutely solo for the remainder of the run

In 2016, then-President Barack Obama declared a federal emergency in Flint, Michigan after a botched drinking water switch tainted the city’s water supply and spiked lead poisoning rates among children
The city of Eau Claire received its first state grant to replace an estimated 1,266 residential lead service lines only a year later
The city has replaced about 400 lead service lines with those made of copper or plastic
“We want every lead service line out of our system,” Lane Berg
said while giving a reporter an up-close look at a replacement job
we’ve set a goal: By the end of 2023
In meeting that goal, Eau Claire would join Madison and Green Bay on a list of Wisconsin cities that have rid their water systems of lead service lines
which typically consist of both utility-owned and privately owned portions
Wisconsin communities have replaced more than 115,000 utility-side and private-side portions of pipelines made of lead
galvanized steel that may contain lead flake buildup — or other materials that might contain lead
state Public Service Commission data shows
That’s about 20 percent of Wisconsin’s known pipelines made of those materials
Flint’s water crisis was a “driving force” behind Eau Claire’s removal efforts — even though Eau Claire’s drinking water system didn’t face the conditions that triggered the Flint disaster
state officials in 2014 approved a drinking water switch from Detroit’s water to the Flint River
But the state failed to require treatment to control corrosion of aging lead pipelines
Highly corrosive river water caused lead to leach into drinking water
Eau Claire’s water is far less corrosive
and a lime additive coats the inside of the city’s pipelines
Just 11 Eau Claire County children were found to be poisoned by lead in 2020
That was lower than the state average of 3.4 percent
eliminating lead pipelines would go further to minimize health risks
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has granted Eau Claire $1.6 million in recent years to do just that
and Berg anticipates receiving additional funding
“Teaming up with the DNR put lead service replacements on a much higher priority,” Berg said
“We are so thankful for the grant money.”
While some residents might want to avoid digging and disruption that comes with a pipeline replacement
Berg said city workers have found success by spending hours canvassing neighborhoods — encouraging residents to schedule service line inspections— and tracking their progress
“It’s going really well,” Smiskey said
After inspecting roughly 20 percent of houses while canvassing a neighborhood one week
appointments typically start trickling in over the next two or three weeks — sometimes representing about 80 percent of the neighborhood
A city ordinance requires service line replacement when a lead pipeline is encountered
Smiskey leaves for homeowners a letter that mentions the requirement and encourages them to “take advantage of our program now while we still have grant money to replace your lead service.”
Residents may apply to the city’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program for funding
a local contractor from a preselected list will be contacted to do the replacement
with digging typically limited to a small hole between the street curb and sidewalk
Any additional cost falls to the property owner
Service line replacements can cost anywhere from $1,200 to $12,300 per line, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
But participants in the Eau Claire program typically pay nothing
“The biggest thing I see on the program — the improvement — is when the city started reimbursing the contractor directly,” Montana Birt
told Wisconsin Watch as his colleagues replaced a service line at the home of Eau Claire resident
“That way it takes all the burden off of the homeowner.”
Grundman said she was happy to take advantage of the program and was “very much” satisfied with the contractor’s work
Eau Claire will probably have everybody doing (replacements),” Grundman said
“And then the money won’t be there
So it’s good we did it when we did.”

Leave management ranks among HR's most challenging tasks since it requires balancing employees' needs with a complex web of legal regulations
As organizations continue to add new types of leave and the leave management process grows more daunting
more HR departments are choosing to outsource parts of the process to third-party administrators
Providers of software-as-a-service (SaaS) platforms can remove much of the compliance and leave tracking burden
Application programming interfaces (APIs) make it easier and more reliable to integrate third-party leave software with existing human resource information systems (HRIS) and payroll systems
But not all leave management software vendors are created equal
Experts suggest using a comprehensive set of criteria when evaluating and choosing an SaaS partner
Leave management software vendors can automate leave workflows and required employee communications; automatically update HR leaders when new federal
state or local leave regulations are passed; and handle complex tasks like leave-related payroll calculations
Studies show organizations are placing a new strategic focus on absence management by creating more formal programs and policies around the issue
Gallagher's 2021 Workforce Trends Report on physical and emotional well-being found the number of companies that will apply a structured approach to absence management is expected to grow from 50 percent to 63 percent within two years
The Gallagher study found that most HR priorities regarding leave management are still centered around complying with federal
with 55 percent of survey respondents citing such compliance as a top priority
The impact of absence on productivity was another significant concern
with 40 percent of respondents listing it as a top priority
A third concern was educating line managers on available leave types and requirements related to complying with regulations
Experts say one of the biggest advantages of third-party software providers is they help HR more efficiently track all aspects of employee leave and take many routine tasks off their plates
The software can track employees who take a variety of leave types
integrate with centralized team calendars and also educate employees
"The best platforms allow HR to track all employees who are on leave in detail and report back easily to managers," said Rich Fuerstenberg
a senior partner with research and advisory firm Mercer
"You no longer have to use ad hoc reporting methods or spreadsheets for that purpose."
Software vendors also can help HR stay abreast of ever-evolving federal
state and municipal regulations tied to administering leave
"Most providers update changes to federal or state regulations around leave automatically in their systems," he said
"You may know New York law like the back of your hand but aren't as clear about the law in California
The top vendors will keep you updated and push out any changes to those regulations automatically."
disability management and life practice at Willis Towers Watson
said leave management software platforms can help HR create consistent
"These platforms also allow HR to create customized reporting and analytics," Reinberg said
"Many also offer intuitive employee and employer portals to manage leaves and help organizations measure the employee experience."
Fuerstenberg said employee portals in particular can help create a better leave experience for workers
Many have features that explain complex leave policies to employees in understandable terms and have a variety of self-service features
"Employees also can use the portals to see if a current leave request has been approved and for how long or to report intermittent leave like taking a family member to the doctor under the FMLA," Fuerstenberg said
"Some portals also allow employees to upload relevant information if their condition changes
like medical documents or notes from doctors."
Other features are systems that combine human and machine talent to perform leave-related payroll calculations
"We account for all of the qualifying factors that determine an employee's payout scenario while they are on leave," said Jennifer Henderson
a leave management technology platform in Fort Collins
"That includes the amount as well as duration of pay as well as factoring in various pay inputs." Those inputs might include states that have passed paid-leave legislation
information from other third-party administrators related to short- or long-term disability leave
"That jigsaw puzzle of pay can be complex to manage and open to human error if it's not properly automated," Henderson said
"What we do is allow machines to do what machines do best for HR clients and for people to do what people do best."
One reason HR leaders have been reluctant to outsource leave administration is a concern about giving up control of payroll cycles or HR data to third-party providers
Employee leave touches multiple computer systems and
outsourcing required setting up reverse file feeds with external providers to existing payroll or HRIS platforms
which can be a time-consuming and costly process
But Fuerstenberg said more vendors are now using advanced APIs that more easily integrate disparate technology platforms and make most of those old concerns moot
"Third-party software vendors have invested much more in API connectivity," he said
"For employers who've been reluctant to outsource
these technology improvements make system interoperability much smoother than in the past
Experts suggest using a number of key criteria when choosing a leave management technology provider
General criteria to help differentiate SaaS providers should include ability and experience interfacing with a client's HRIS
payroll and time and attendance systems; real-time eligibility determination and implementation support; employee training; and embedded compliance features
Reinberg also recommends using these specific criteria when evaluating leave software vendors:

Charging Star Comics is trying to appeal to students with the new location
By Rich Kersting - April 8
the Oakdale Mall just became a little more alluring
the shopping center is now home to Charging Star Comics
said that he was inspired to move from the store’s location in Johnson City after seeing his results from eight months of research
The data showed that all successful small-time comic shops in the Southern Tier were found in shopping malls
So when a spot opened up for lease in the Oakdale Mall
hoping to open the store’s exposure and consumer base to wider demographics
“Comic shops have a reputation as shady dens where creepy people hang out,” Fuerstenberg said
“The move have brought us to a more open and colorful location.”
The move also means that Charging Star Comics is now on a Binghamton University bus route
Fuerstenberg hopes that this change will establish the shop among the local student body on campus
Charging Star Comics is open to working around BU’s academic schedule for stocking new issues and managing student pull lists and subscriptions
“We don’t want to alienate the BU students
We want their business!” Fuerstenberg said
“We’ll be upping our wall book quantity now that we’re in the mall.”
Fuerstenberg was born and raised in Endicott
and graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 2002
Charging Star Comics has been around since 2006
Fuerstenberg was studying to be a history teacher
but he had always planned on opening a shop after he retired
When Crohn’s disease prevented him from focusing on schoolwork
he decided to cut teaching out of his career path and pursue his dream of owning a comic book store by bringing Charging Star Comics to life
the American comic book industry has gone though several major transformations
divided by historians into different “ages.” The most notable
While the American youth of today weren’t around for these formative years
they reap the benefits and take them for granted
It was during this age that America saw the creation of the archetypal superhero
and the birth of contemporary superstars such as Batman and Superman
While the industry and many of its biggest titles are age-old
there couldn’t be a better time to jump into the comic book game
With the recent rise in popularity of superhero movies
the big comic book publishers like DC and Marvel have rebooted their universes and story lines with “The New 52” and “Marvel NOW!,” respectively
There are more comics coming from graphic novelists who are bypassing traditional big publishing companies
“We’ve really seen a shift toward creator-owned properties
like ‘Walking Dead.’ It’s nice to know where your money is going,” Fuerstenberg said
“There’s also been a big boost in independent publishing
adult males aged 18-45 are the biggest buyers of comic books
because there is stuff for them now,” Fuerstenberg said

Open communication is vital for the Kersley Volunteer Fire Department
which is committed to keeping the community safe
“We have very open lines of communication with the public,” who message the fire department via text messages
Facebook and phone calls with things happening in the community
Some messages include reports of people burning things
The fire department can head out to chat with property owners
educating them on size regulations and helping them understand what they can and can’t burn
open burning is at a Category 1 Campfire level
Campfires can not exceed 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide
Anything wider is considered a Category 2 fire

and accused of having sex with a two female students at National Karate Academy of Martial Arts locations in Roselle and South Elgin
Fuerstenberg pleaded guilty to using his position of trust and authority to assault the two girls between June 2003 and May 2006
Prosecutors said the two girls had attended the karate studio since they were 9 years old; the assaults began when they were in their early teens
DuPage County Assistant State's Attorney Louisa Nuckolls said Fuerstenberg groomed one of his victims by offering private lessons
buying her karate uniforms and paying her entry fees into tournaments

an investigation did not begin until April 2011 after one victim came forward to report the assaults to Roselle police

Kane County Judge James Hallock and DuPage County Judge Blanche Fawell accepted the guilty pleas
Fuerstenberg was wheeled in on a hospital bed
When Fawell asked why Fuerstenberg was at the hospital
Fuerstenberg must serve 85 percent of his 15-year sentence
which equates to about 12 years and nine months
He also gets credit for about 28 months he has spent in jail while the cases were pending and must register a sex offender for the rest of his life
Fuerstenberg attorney Perry Thompson declined to comment afterward
Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon called Fuerstenberg's actions “disturbing
Fuerstenberg was more interested in taking advantage of his position to satisfy his perverted needs than he was in looking out for the best interests of the children he was responsible for mentoring,” McMahon said
McMahon and DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin praised the victims for coming forward
