Nestled under the Ammergau Alps lies a quaint Bavarian town just a kilometre away from the Austrian border
It has produced many of Germany’s stars for the past four decades
host to the World Junior Curling Championships 2023 this week
has a population of around 15,000 and boasts one of Germany’s most successful ice hockey clubs
the idyllic town has become the epicentre for curling in Germany
snow-christened trees sits the home to EV Fuessen ice hockey team
Bundesleistungszentrum – but it is next door where a plethora of German curlers call their second home
became synonymous with curling in the area
Charlie played second for Germany at the World Men’s Curling Championship 1986 in Toronto
“Fuessen is a small town where ice sports are a big part of the city,” says Charlie
it was more about ice hockey but since the introduction to the Olympics
We now have the German Curling Association based here and built a rink solely for curling — it’s made a massive difference
when Charlie was part of the European Curling Championship gold medal-winning team
but the torch was being passed on to the next generation
Andy and Uli sensationally won the European title in front of a home crowd in Fuessen with more than 3,000 spectators in attendance
Uli played third in the team but admits curling was not the first winter sport he took up as a youngster
it was figure skating and skiing which caught our eye,” admits Uli
“Fuessen was big on ice hockey but our mother didn’t allow us to start
so I naturally picked up curling with my father
who was one of the first founding members here
“It was my brother Andy who began to have the first major successes on the junior side and then added on the German championships on my father’s team
When it changed for curling in the town was in 1997 at the European Championships
and we had this transformation and national recognition
We started to have public money going into it but the work behind the scenes was massive.”
The culmination of two generations of success on ice brings us back round to Fuessen once more
The Kapps remain as involved as they’ve ever been
This week at the World Junior Curling Championships
Andy’s youngest children Anne and Benjamin are part of the German teams
Andy and Uli themselves are on the coaching teams
while Charlie and his wife play the role of spectators in the stands
who is a member of the German team taking part in the LGT World Women’s Curling Championship 2023 later this month
explains what curling means to Fuessen and her family
“This is where we all learned curling,” says Lena
who describes herself as the protective older sister
“Me and my siblings started practising here and played our first tournaments here
so to have people coming from all across the world to our home town is very exciting
“I wanted to give something back to the club that gave me so much
We’ve begun organising the event in May 2022 so to be here this week is amazing.”
who finished runner-up at last year’s world juniors in Jonkoping
highlighting the “community spirit” that makes the town welcoming for everybody
everybody knows each other,” says Benjamin
“People are willing to help in one way or another and it makes me so happy seeing everybody working together to create a special event
being able to have my family all here in Fuessen is a new experience and I really love it
It pushes me more than ever to make them proud.”
To say that the three generations of Kapp are engrossed by the sport of curling would be an understatement
the dining table plays host to a number of discussions about curling — and as Uli points out
it brings them together in different ways to regular families
“We definitely have different perspectives on many things,” says Uli
“We have had hard times but I think over the years we really managed to grow a really strong bond.”
Andy says he “100% agrees” with his younger brother and believes their different approaches to curling in the past is what ultimately made them a fantastic team
I’m the opposite to Benjamin now who doesn’t get too emotional about the mistakes of his team
While it might take a village to raise somebody
it takes a supportive grandma to document and celebrate every passing success in the family
“Our grandma is our biggest fan,” reveals Lena
“She puts a lot of pictures of us whenever we’re in the newspaper and puts it in our WhatsApp group
She gets very excited and is a super fan.”
wife and brother all together in the arena is something he admits has not come to mind — until now
“It’s really good for us to be together,” he says
there will be many more newspaper cut-outs to come as the next generation of curlers take on the world

Ludwig II will also be brought back to life in Füssen in 2020
After the planned hotel project to support the festival hall was not realized due to a citizens' petition
it was unclear whether the successful musical "Ludwig²" would be performed again in 2020
It is now certain: The legendary life of the king will once again be presented exclusively in 2020 in the dreamlike setting of the Ludwig Festspielhaus in Füssen - on Germany's largest musical revolving stage including a 90.000 litre water basin directly opposite Neuschwanstein Castle
"The response from the audience and the extremely good sales figures have encouraged us - we will remain true to our king and our favorite musical Ludwig² will also be performed in 2020," theater director Benjamin Sahler announced in October
Instead of starting the season in May as before
there will be Ludwig performances every month in the fifth year of the production
In the opulent stage setting, the stars of the current musical scene (including Jan Ammann, Uwe Kröger and Matthias Stockinger) bring the protagonists to life again. Tickets and further information are available at das-festspielhaus.de
The musical “Ludwig2” tells the impressive story of the “fairytale king” Ludwig II of Bavaria
who became immortal not only through the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle
the support of the composer Richard Wagner and his affection for Empress Sisi (Elisabeth of Austria)
Ludwig's life remains a mystery to this day
between genius and madness - and ends in a death that remains unexplained to this day
In the atmosphere of the Festival Hall in Füssen
the audience experiences Ludwig's difficult childhood
King of Bavaria and the difficult decisions between warlike politics and enthusiastic culture

Apr 23 (EFE).- A study carried out by a university in China said Tuesday that the high cost of marriage
is contributing to the decline in the country’s fertility rate
Academics from Renmin University said the average cost of a wedding amounts to RMB330,400 ($45,594)
a figure that exceeds the national per capita income of 2023 eight times
This economic factor is presented as the main obstacle to getting married
according to the survey carried out among specific groups such as singles
infertile people and those with few children
More than 60 percent of respondents said the economic pressure associated with marriage is very high
“The high average cost of marriage reflects strong economic pressure on couples and their families,” the study said
the time dedicated to dating or courtship also represents a cost not usually considered
72 percent of those surveyed said they had been pressured by family or friends to get married
but a factor that weighs even more is the negative influence of unhappy marriages on their environment
the study highlights the availability of a person in charge of child care as a key factor
Almost 70 percent of those surveyed said this aspect is decisive
but the social environment and birth support policies are next in importance
The research said most people get married looking for companionship and emotional support
Only 30 percent of respondents cited raising children as a primary motivation for getting married
Registered marriages in China saw a significant increase in 2023
reversing a downward trend that had lasted almost a decade
Civil affairs ministry data said there were 7.68 million marriages in 2023
the lowest figure since records began in 1986
China’s official statistics reveal a 10 percent increase in births during the first months of 2024
which could mean a rebound in birth rates during this auspicious Year of the Dragon in Asian tradition
China reported a decline in its population in 2022 and 2023
when the number of inhabitants fell as a result of the failed Great Leap Forward industrialization policy and the resulting famine
While the theme that the director from Graz has decided to stage is by no means obvious (especially as regards the paranormal implications given to the film)
more than one narrative solution has made the work quite problematic
to stage the topical – and often bypassed – issue of work-related stress
Marie Kreutzer has told us the story of Lola (Valerie Pachner)
a 30-year-old career woman who divides her life between Vienna – her home town – and abroad
without caring much about her private life
At least until she receives a phone call from a Viennese clinic informing her that her sister Conny (Pia Hierzegger)
who has always suffered from mental problems
The difficulty in managing human relationships and
the fear of not being able to protect her loved ones will slowly lead the protagonist to a nervous breakdown
Between one mysterious phone call from a hidden number and another
between a misguided love affair and a relationship that has been neglected for too long
The Ground beneath my Feet develops tediously – and in a dangerously redundant and repetitive way – until the end
when a logical and perfectly appropriate solution is replaced by banal and uninspiring twists
not at all at ease with what she wants to stage
without ever pursuing one of them in an exhaustive way
While the mysterious phone calls – with their psychological thriller overtones – seem to gain in appeal as significant moments are shown
suddenly this approach is inexplicably abandoned
poorly-calibrated family story that merely superficially investigates a relationship that is much more multifaceted and complex than it may initially seem
The final result is a weak and even not very credible film
in which even two good performers such as Valerie Pachner and Pia Hierzegger (here particularly poorly employed in such a potentially interesting role) are not enhanced as they deserve due to an excessively stereotyped script
The Lola and Conny of The Ground beneath my Feet fail
faced with such a tormented and complicated family relationship
one immediately thinks of how such situations are portrayed by countryman Michael Haneke
one misses even more a strong and convincing screenplay
the film in question has been selected to compete for the prestigious Golden Bear

and lead Cate Fitzgerald had to battle through a world B qualifier to advance to this weekend’s main world junior championship

Canada’s Isabelle Ladouceur failed to lock down a qualifying spot at the world championships
leaving the Deschenes’ rink with some work to do
The world B event in Finland proved to be the perfect place for the team to form a bond with Deschenes as they rolled to the gold medal
we weren’t thrilled about it (playing in the world B event)
“We had a really great experience in Finland
We developed a lot of excitement because we have been preparing for this for almost a year now.”
Deschenes has made several trips to Halifax to play and practise with the team and when they are not together
where they have out-of-province players,” said Mattatall
“The commitment is to practise on their own and be ready for when they get together for spiels and training weekends
Fitzgerald agreed that reservations about a long-distance relationship have been put to rest
“We really made good use of the time when Emily was here,” said Fitzgerald
“We have done everything we can to prepare for worlds.”
Canadian team leader Lori Olson-Johns and former skip Stevens will be in Germany to lend a helping hand to the team
“I think the team has really gelled,” said Mattatall
the Deschenes’ rink played some games against Scotties Tournament of Hearts competitors Christina Black
“We have been battle-tested and we’ve come through with shining colours,” said Mattatall
we were playing Scotties teams in our prep
That gave us a lot of confidence to say that we have what it takes.”

The German U16 men completed the 4-nation tournament in Füssen with one win and two defeats
U16 national coach Robin Becker's selection played in three consecutive games from Wednesday to Friday against the national teams from Austria
the tournament was the first test of strength at international level in the new 2023/2024 season
After there was no success to celebrate on the first two days of the tournament (3:4 against Austria
the DEB-Selection concluded with a 3-1 win against Switzerland
The next U16 event is a tournament in Vierumäki (FIN) next October
U16 national coach Robin Beckers: “In general
we revealed some problems in the build-up game and showed habits that were not desirable for us
which we as a coaching team addressed directly
we are satisfied with the development over the course of the tournament because
we were able to see how the team implemented our input
our game overall was more straightforward and less playful than at the start of the three days
it was an instructive and pleasant time with the team because the players and staff around the team worked together harmoniously and in a goal-oriented manner
That made it easier for me personally to start the new season.”
