Many Floridians are leaving a trail of anxiety and frayed nerves Although they remained without power for three days and four nights the Winters are safe and lights are back on in their Dunedin condominium — which absorbed zero significant damage — three miles from the Gulf Coast shoreline But Tony says his own emotions are still high as he sees what so many people within a half-hour of him have gone through do I feel bad now because I have power now and other people don’t," Tony said “That I don’t have to have FEMA come and assess the damage at my house while I have a half a dozen of my co-workers who was living out of an RV in the area because Hurricane Helene flooded her house A FEMA inspector was scheduled to come look at that house on Friday which meant that co-worker had a major decision in the days before Hurricane Milton hit — drive the RV a few hours away from the hurricane’s predicted path ‘I probably should evacuate with this RV but I don’t want to miss my FEMA appointment because I don’t want to delay trying to get my home repaired to get back into it,‘" Tony said Tony works as a chaplain for a chain of hospices in the Tampa area called Accentcare and said it was heartbreaking to see hospice patients — whose lives are already close to ending — being lined up in front of the hospices and waiting to be bussed to other facilities hours away from the hurricane’s wrath to the eastern coast of Florida “It was horrible going to these facilities and seeing those poor people having to get loaded into buses,” Winter said if they were going to lose electricity and they were on oxygen Imagine you or your loved one relying on oxygen tanks living in a home without electricity for a fifth consecutive day Many in that predicament were moved into hospitals some hospitals had to move patients out of their rooms and into hallways in order to be safe from shattering windows part of his sermon was about this “collective trauma” everyone in the area feels whether their homes or businesses were destroyed or not Whether their lives or their loved ones' lives were ended or threatened everyone’s way of life has been thrown off and thrashed around like the whirling debris left over from Helene that blew in the winds of Milton knocking down trees and creating added debris that sits in yards and blocks roads in its wake “There are so many people that are hurting around you because you were in your house with the wind pounding your house wondering if windows were going to break or the roof’s going to come off You would likely conclude that Tony feared for his life — and his family’s — during those darkest and most dangerous hours and it would be almost impossible for it to flood,” Tony said “I knew we weren’t getting the Category 4 or Category 5 hurricane I got to know quite a few people who lived through the Cat-4 or Cat-5 in Fort Myers a couple years ago and heard their stories and their experiences “They survived some pretty unbelievably awful stuff ‘I don’t think we’re going to die in this situation but it’s going to potentially make life really difficult.” In the end, Milton proved to be not as catastrophic as meteorologists had feared in the days leading to landfall. According to the Washington Post “the surge the meteorologists warned could rise above 10 feet did not appear.. Hurricanes spin counterclockwise and locations on their north side experience winds from the east were pushing waters back out into the Gulf of Mexico showed water levels had dropped below normal at Port Manatee Tony and his family are near Clearwater Beach He said that through a few days without electricity albeit cold water without an operating water heater The Winters had done their pre-hurricane diligence of stocking up on water they became emotionally and psychologically exhausted from worrying about when Olivia will ever go back to school and when they’ll go back to work who lived about a mile away and whose home also survived the storms unscathed They stayed in touch with worried loved ones back home A bulk of Tony’s family still lives in Southwest Minnesota “All of things are signals that life isn’t normal yet again," Tony said “I just want to be back to a time where I don’t have to be worried about storms or thinking about how much it has impacted people “That’s the emotional part that I think that goes on there’s always chaos in people’s lives and things that are hard to deal with But as for any regrets of living in the eye of two deadly hurricanes in two weeks Like Groton, S.D. native and former KSFY anchor Doug Tobin, who Dakota News Now profiled a week ago as he prepared his shoreline condo for Hurricane Milton Tony grew up and spent over a decade of his adult life living through brutally cold winters of the Upper Midwest and has no interest in living through them again Tobin told DNN that tornadoes and blizzards are more brutal to experience because there often isn’t enough warning ahead of time to allow a resident to flee to safety while hurricane forecasts come with more lag time to flee but the likelihood of you actually getting hit by them is really small in the grand scheme,” Tony said “But a hurricane — everybody is going to get hit by it You could tell just talking about surviving back-to-back whopping hurricanes has taken a toll “It’s just all weather you can’t control and you have to come to the realization that we have to live Reporter’s note — Tobin tells Dakota News Now his second story condo in the Clearwater area received water damage from the unit above his but “it’s just a small issue," while the first-floor residents below him sustained flooding damage and lost electricity went unscathed and didn’t even lose electricity SLAYTON — The Murray County Central track and field team picked up a win on the boys side of its Rebel Relays on .. one campus the roofs of both buildings are 10 years past their end-of-life date The school parking lots reached their end-of-life dates around 15 years ago Superintendent Michael Pagel said both areas need constant patching and it’s time for upgrades the ISD 505 Board of Education has been working on a way to make these improvements After a facility assessment was completed by Coon Rapids-based engineering firm inBYLT the results led board members to seek voter approval for a building consolidation with new construction we were looking at a multi-million dollar project just to do the roofs alone,” said Pagel inBYLT and I met and we decided we have two options…we have to maintain a two-building campus or go to a single building.” ISD 505 currently serves 340 Pre-K through 12th grade students The middle/high school building was built in 1955 Fulda Elementary was constructed in 1913 and was added onto four times — in 1939 Results of a community-wide survey showed just over a majority of participants favor consolidating ISD 505 into one building for grades K-12 Pagel said he was impressed with the response rate of members the survey results showed 30% of those who received it took the time to complete it The average response to a survey is normally around 17% Following a favorable review of the proposed referendum from the Minnesota Department of Education if the bond passes and all goes according to plan the elementary school building would be decommissioned and the high school building would be added onto in order to combine both buildings Included in the referendum are improvements to the school’s heating and ventilation systems and outdoor track which has deteriorated and been unusable for athletic purposes for some time now The project would also include replacement of the existing roof on the middle/high school as well as a remodel and expansion of the cafeteria New additions to the high school building would include building safety features an auxiliary gym and weight room and a space for ag and metal shop classes details on what would and would not be included in the single campus would be finalized following the vote With the referendum just over a month away Pagel said he doesn’t have an inkling on how things will go but said his main priority is that people feel heard and go to the polls on May 13 “I’m optimistic that there’s support (for the project),” said Pagel “We have to address these needs and we know we have to do something.” ISD 505 has had one community information meeting where people could learn more about the project learn how it might affect their property taxes and have the opportunity to ask questions ISD 505 Board of Education Chairman Doug Clarke said the first hearing “People asked really good questions and we had answers for almost all of them,” said Clarke they (community members) wanted to know about how the ag tax credit would affect them.” According to an informational sheet on ISD 505’s website bills for agricultural homestead property will see a 70% tax reduction and over $20 million of the $35.3 bond would be paid by the Ag2School tax credit The next public hearing is from 7 to 8 p.m April 23 in the Fulda High School Cafeteria with another scheduled for May 1 at the same time and place an ask for money for ISD 505 wouldn’t just go away Due to the severity of much of the district's outdated areas “There would be an additional ask for referendum dollars we just don’t know the size of it,” said Pagel who played basketball at Fulda High School as a sophomore signs a basketball for a young fan at the Vogelweh Powerzone Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Vogelweh on a tour promoting his new CD titled “Shaquille O’Neal Presents His Superfriends.” There were more than 400 fans at the store to get autographs FULDA — Still standing after more than 125 years the Fulda Depot is being bolstered and repaired thanks to a $170,000 Clean Water Construction work in and around the historic building began two weeks ago and includes the installation of a new sump pump (for which 4.5 feet of dirt underneath the building was dug out to facilitate its installation) adding a wall for chimney support and relandscaping the front of the building the Fulda Depot saw up to four passenger trains and four freight trains come through the station on a daily basis at its peak It became something of a community center during its operational lifespan a century after Fulda’s first train arrived at the depot the last freight train made its way through the station with the tracks removed the following year As the only surviving Eastlake-style two-story depot in southwest Minnesota the depot was soon after preserved and listed on the National Register of Historic Places Project leader Ted Winter — who has been involved with the Fulda Heritage Society with his wife Marj for several years — said this project was greatly needed “It was a necessary project to get done to save and restore the depot back to where it originally should look like “If the foundation is rotting and the building is settling down you could see where it was splitting from the top to the bottom The floor was going down and was dragging the whole building down you end up with nothing over a period of years because it just keeps rotting away," he added "That's why we had to dig it out and fix it right We're going about it so that the floors will stay straight the building will stay straight and sound and solid for the next hundred years.” After first applying for a grant through the Clean Water the Fulda Heritage Society’s third application was finally approved last December The work began as soon as the weather allowed “I think digging the dirt out from underneath was the biggest challenge with this project,” he said “The construction team also ran into a water table They were down about six feet and then the water would come up underneath the depot They had to do some work with some rock and lay some plywood down so the (mini skid steers) could go in and out.” Winter said community comment on the project has helped him further see the project’s importance to the region and its people “People are so elated that we're preserving the depot,” he shared We're making it to have the proper presence for the historical data that the depot is to this community and the communities around us That's kind of why we're doing it; because it needs to be done and it's a historical relic that's out here on the prairie "The community and lots of people in the community have been coming up and saying that they're really pleased that we're doing this project,” he added Community members aren’t the only ones excited by the depot’s repairs “It's a justification of its historical presence its historical value to the people of this community This depot is part of the history of Fulda that this is actually gonna be here for my kids and my grandkids because this is the history of Fulda.” WORTHINGTON — One person was killed and several others injured in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday evening on U.S According to a news release issued late Thursday afternoon by Nobles The first greeting comes from a youngish guy who is going about his business in the old TSV Lehnerz clubhouse. His name is Bastian Stumpf. He is one of the coaches and, though there is a considerable language barrier, it turns out that mentioning Jamal Musiala around these parts is a form of entry so he brings out his laptop and loads up a translation page to confirm that this is where it all started: a bumpy football pitch on the outskirts of Fulda in Germany’s Hesse region It turns out he played against Musiala when they were kids Musiala rarely played with boys his own age because he was far too good for them he was moved up to play with six-year-olds Now 21, he is the rising star of Germany’s national team scoring in two of their first three games in Euro 2024 and Bastian does not need the internet to translate how that feels the way he puffs out his cheeks in disbelief The advertising boards are showing signs of wear and tear and what was once a ticket office is no longer in use and resembles an old bus stop you will know its rough edges are part of the charm But it still requires a leap of imagination to look across this rectangular piece of grass and realise it is where the sport witnessed its first moments of Musiala magic Bastian is still typing about what exactly that means to the people of Fulda when a car pulls through the entrance parks behind one of the goals and its occupants start to make their way up the path to the clubhouse The driver introduces himself as Dejan Milenkovski now plays in the sixth tier of German football who spent more than 20 years coaching TSV’s juniors on this pitch are not short of stories when it comes to a player who has thrilled Euro 2024 audiences with his skills you could see he was special,” says Branko Father and son also have several albums worth of pictorial souvenirs saved on their phones the young Musiala is wearing a medal around his neck or holding on to a trophy or some other award He always seems to be the smallest kid on the team who has always taken a very enthusiastic role on the touchline flick-flacks (backflips) and things like that strong guy; the exact opposite of Jamal’s physique.” you might be familiar with the story about Musiala moving to England with his family when he was seven and the sequence of events that eventually took him back to Germany to join Bayern Munich about his upbringing in Fulda — a small city of 69,000 people among others — and his formative years at what was his first and Musiala was actually born 150 miles away in Stuttgart on February 26 as the son of a Nigerian father and a German mother with Polish roots the family moved to Fulda because his mother was starting a bachelor’s degree in social sciences at the city’s university Dejan offers to drive us to the old Musiala residence: a four-storey apartment block on one of the busiest routes in and out of the city Carolin had to negotiate four lanes of traffic to get her son to Marquardschule for his lessons Nor does there seem to be many patches of grass available for a football-mad kid was a local junior team that had a reputation throughout amateur and professional football in this region for its production line of young players the only way his opponents could stop him was to foul him,” says Dejan “I won’t ever forget one game when Jamal got the ball in his own defence and dribbled past five or six players It was typical Jamal; he did this every game another player came in from the side to slide tackle and Jamal’s father came on the field and was shouting at the other guy the club go by the name of SG Barockstadt Fulda-Lehnerz and their first team has moved to a bigger stadium on the other side of Fulda’s main tourist attraction The younger players remain at the old sportplatz where matches are played to the background hum of the nearby B27 highway and supporters have decorated various lampposts with stickers to announce the presence of the Barockstadt Brigade and denounce rival club KSV Hessen Kassel (Nobody easily offended should translate the meaning of “Scheiss KSV”) Branko played for TSV in their peak years of competing in Germany’s fourth division He was a youth international for North Macedonia before moving to Germany and he has helped numerous players to professional careers But there has never been any doubt about who was the best “We were playing our biggest rivals and Jamal scored twice to win us the tournament playing against boys five years older than him.” is that the clubhouse walls are not lined with pictures of the young Musalia and that you don’t see his face staring back from window displays Maybe they are just not showy people in Fulda He was back here last year to launch the Team Musiala Foundation when the mayor invited him to sign The Golden Book of Fulda — one of the highest honours for anyone from the city It also turns out Musiala has returned to Fulda on another occasion when he went back to his hometown for the first time since leaving Germany six years earlier to see her birthplace and to show his little brother he assumed they would not be allowed to see his old classroom accompanied by his family and two of his old friends a couple of footballs were brought out of the cupboards meaning an impromptu kickabout in the sports hall “It’s not always that a pupil has a career progression like this,” said Schulte “Jamal always had an enthusiasm for football and sports in general I spoke to a colleague who also taught him and he said that whenever the long break was coming up Jamal would be looking out of the window: ‘Who’ll play with me today printed good-luck messages from some of his former team-mates “I wish Jamal all the best and hope he can live his dream for as long as possible”, said Maximilian Weisbacker, the team’s former goalkeeper. “Manuel Neuer was always my idol I have no words to explain how it feels that a former team-mate of mine is playing with him at Bayern and for the national team.” The next assignment for ‘Bambi’ is to help Germany reach the quarter-finals at Denmark’s expense he will be aiming to demonstrate why many observers rank him among the tournament’s outstanding performers so far A lot has happened since those early days in Fulda when the opposition scored and the four-year-old Musiala — not realising the competitive nature of the sport — joined in with their cheering Today’s Musiala is establishing himself as a superstar of his generation his old friends and team-mates reckon you can still see the Fulda effect “Some of the movements that he does now are the same that he did with us,” says Dejan looking out towards the piece of land where it all started to think that he used to play with me on this field.” (Top photos: Getty Images;
