Sioux Falls Christian boys track senior shot putter Paul Hoekman and junior teammate Marcus Furth spent all year practicing their throwing together
Furth's dad built a wooden ring that they used to prepare for indoor nationals in March
They used the wooden ring throughout the indoor season to hone their form and do their best at nationals
but it helped us so much to get ready and do our best,” Hoekman said
In addition to the indoor practice the throwing duo got
where they threw throughout the winter cold
Hoekman said he started throwing in eighth grade and immediately fell in love with it
Sioux Falls Christian throwing coach Brett Keepers said everyone on the track and field team knew Hoekman would be special
“He's so passionate about it,” Keepers said
and everybody knew that someday Paul was going to break all of the SFC records
The duo of Furth and Hoekman both finished in the top three in shot put at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on May 2
with Furth finishing third and Hoekman taking home the first-place medal with a 64-07.25 throw
Hoekman finished second a year ago and entered the meet set on a first-place finish
“I knew I would have to come here and let it eat
The North Dakota State commit recently threw a 66’5” in the Pierre Legion Meet
and has become one of the top throwers in the country
He’s also ranked second in the state in the discus
Even with the first-place medal around Hoekman’s neck
Keepers said the senior is likely a little disappointed with his final mark today
The Chargers' throwing coach said Hoekman was aiming for a new personal record but came up a bit short of that
“He just always wants to do better … Paul wants to set records and Paul wants to be the best in South Dakota.”
Keepers said he frequently has to get Hoekman to taper his determination a bit to get him to relax and realize this is all a part of a longer process
He said Hoekman may even go back out and throw some more or lift weights later before the discus throw on May 3
“There's little things that he can (tone down)
it's even showing him film while he's throwing,” Keepers said
because there's always areas that you can improve on
And he wants to just break it down to the littlest thing
Hoekman’s next goal will be to reach the 70-foot mark
Hoekman will compete in the discus throw at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on May 3 at 1 p.m

Securities class actions are an unfortunate fact of life for U.S
When a company and their directors and officers are sued for securities fraud
finding the right defense counsel is mission critical
The securities defense bar is a small subset of all U.S
and the right attorney within the right firm
How can the directors and officers named as defendants in a securities class action get it right
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) believes it has an answer
BHSI maintains a list of securities defense firms that
provide the best defense in this crucial area
But their “Preferred Counsel” program goes even further
offering insureds several financial and other incentives unique in the D&O marketplace
In 2024, there were 220 “core” securities class actions filed (i.e.
Claimed damages rose by 23 percent last year
with 27 lawsuits alleging damages of over $5 billion
with typical settlements ranging between $30 million and $40 million
Ten securities class actions settled for $100 million or more
and the total value of all settlements in 2024 was over $6 billion
In addition to traditional securities class actions
“mega” shareholder derivative cases continue to rise
with many of them settling at $100 million or more
With alleged damages in securities claims frequently in the billions
even for medium and smaller sized public companies
trying a securities class action becomes a “bet the company” proposition
and the cost and complexity of litigating these cases
defending a securities class action calls for the very best legal representation
That is where BHSI aims to help its customers navigate this important decision
SVP Public Commercial Insurance and D&O Product Lead
BHSI launched its Preferred Counsel Program
which offers insureds financial and other benefits for working with one of 25 carefully vetted law firms
“These firms have demonstrated a deep understanding of securities class actions and the unique challenges our customers face,” William Carroll
SVP public commercial insurance and D&O product lead for BHSI
“BHSI can ensure that our policyholders receive the highest quality legal representation when they need it most.”
and looming discovery costs risking depletion of D&O insurance proceeds
job number one for the defense attorney in a securities class action is defeating the case at the pleadings stage on motion to dismiss
“Our goal is to have the best attorney on each particular case that provides the client with the highest probability of getting a suit dismissed at pleading stage,” said Carroll
VP public commercial and financial institutions and technical claims lead
roughly half of all securities class actions survive a motion to dismiss and move into the discovery phase – a costly
time-consuming and perilous journey offering few rewards for the defense
All securities defense firms advertise their success at getting cases dismissed
and all are ostensibly prepared to go to trial
the number of firms that consistently demonstrate success
“These cases need to be handled by counsel with the highest levels of expertise,” Critchell said
The firms on BHSI’s preferred counsel list are selected for a combination of legal firepower and commercial practicality
“They are all fierce litigators who also know how to run a case effectively and efficiently
with an eye toward the eventual resolution – including negotiating with the top plaintiffs firms
all of whom are tough litigators in their own right.”
VP Public Commercial and Financial Institutions and Technical Claims Lead
BHSI’s preferred counsel endorsement is aimed at steering their customers to the “best of the best” securities litigation defense firms
the endorsement contains a number of industry-leading financial and other incentives
available in the event the insured chooses counsel from the preferred list
The first financial incentive is an immediate reduction in the amount of the self-insured retention
The reduction is based on an agreed percentage of the retention amount – typically 25 percent – and is applied at the beginning of the claim
is triggered when and if the defendants do not prevail on the motion to dismiss
with the case proceeding toward the costly territory of discovery and potential settlement
BHSI’s endorsement offers an additional reduction of up to 100 percent of the amount remaining in the SIR – a feature that is unique in the D&O marketplace
“We are essentially putting our money where our mouth is,” Carroll said
“The true economic benefit for the client can range from a few hundred thousand dollars to millions.”
But the benefits BHSI’s endorsement provides do not end there
The endorsement is available for all insureds for whom BHSI provides primary insurance and allows them the freedom to choose a law firm from the preferred counsel list – or not
BHSI’s customers are free to use all the firms in any jurisdiction in which securities litigation is filed in the United States
BHSI believes all the firms on its preferred counsel list are competent to litigate cases anywhere in the country
The program has proved an immediate success
Carroll reports that the insurer has been able to grow its primary public D&O portfolio by over 20 percent since rolling out the program last year
BHSI considers its market-leading endorsement a source of mutual benefit for its insureds
Building strong relationships with law firms is a key feature of the program from BHSI’s perspective
“A strong bond between the insurer and legal counsel is especially important in securities litigation,” said Critchell
“In part because we as claims professionals add real value to the process
particularly once settlement discussions commence
Firms that recognize this smooth the entire process for their clients.”
we work hand in hand with our claims teams in assessing the risks of securities litigation for our customers
and we consider our claims professionals a major value add
The law firms in our program understand this and actively partner with us.”
getting the right firms on the preferred counsel program
and involving BHSI early in conversations about the choice of defense firm is crucial
“Having relationships with these law firms that extend through the life of the claim and beyond
is important both on the claims and underwriting side
we’re comfortable communicating with each other.”
our familiarity and experience with these attorneys provides a level of comfort and confidence in the legal process,” Carroll concluded

As had been rumored, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim fullback/winger Marco John is headed back to SpVgg Greuther Fürth
The 22-year-old returns to the Kleebätter on a free transfer after the Sinsheimers terminated his working papers
Jonh hopes to rebuild his career in a locale at which he once thrived.
John maintains 25 top flight appearances to his credit
he looked to a have a highly promising future ahead of him
he impressed with consistent performances across 25 2
Bundesliga appearances during the 2022/23 campaign.
Since returning to Sinsheim, however, John has struggled with injuries. By the time he returned from an ACL tear incurred late in the summer of 2023, competition within the TSG squad was simply too fierce. He qualified as "dead-weight" on the Hoffenheim roster entering the current window.
"Marco fought his way back impressively," Hoffenheim'sporting director Andreas Schicker noted in a club-released statement accompanying the transaction
"We nevertheless came to the conclusion that Marco needs more game time
We have now made it possible for him to move to Greuther Fürth and are convinced that we have found an optimal solution for everyone.”
“I've never lost touch with some of the players,” the player himself added
“What I've heard from some of the guys [at SpVgg Greuther Fürth] reinforced my decision to come back
The first half of the season didn't go as well as hoped
but I'm sure that together we can overcome the situation and hopefully come out of it stronger in the end."

second-tier Bundesliga club Greuther Fürth footballers Julian Green and Maximilian Dietz spoke with US media
the duo shared their desire to convince Mauricio Pochettino for a national team call-up
In addition to a wide range of soccer topics
they also touched upon the upcoming US presidential election
Green and Dietz played together in a double-pivot midfield in Furth’s emphatic 4-0 win away at Jahn Regensburg last month
While the former Bayern Munich player made the permanent shift to orchestrating the play from a defensive midfield position
Dietz returns to playing center-back in Alexander Zorniger’s back-three system
“It’s a nice feeling to have Max on the field,” Green said about his compatriot
“It’s a good feeling to have another American around
I hope we’ll be here together for the next couple of years.”
the 29-year-old all-rounder will have a strong chance at jumping into the top ten of Furth’s all-time appearance makers
he’s expected to make his 200th cap for the club nicknamed Cloverleaves
That wasn’t the initial plan as he spent the previous four years playing for three clubs before joining them in 2018
But it’s very crucial to have a club that treats you as an important player,” Green said
The 22-year-old is very thankful to his club for allowing him to participate in the Olympics last month
even though that means I missed the entire preseason.”
Dietz was unable to play a big part in the U23 tournament
he missed the start of the preparation for the country’s first Olympics appearance in men’s football since 2008
Marko (Mitrovic) knew I wasn’t fully fit for the tournament
It was clear I wasn’t going to play 90 minutes,” he recalls their time in France
We bonded well and played poker every night.”
we didn’t get as far as we wanted with our goal to get a medal
But we did well to represent the values of US soccer,” Dietz adds
representing the senior national team is the main target
Dietz believes the squad that participates in the Olympic Games is ready to leapfrog
it’s up to other people to decide,” he said
who scored against Belgium in the 2014 World Cup at the age of 19
He also leaves the judgment to the decision-makers when pressed about his extended time away from the national team
“It’s a question for the last coach (Gregg Berhalter)
Everyone has their own style and maybe his own players he prefers a little bit more
The decision relies on the coach,” he recounted
Pochettino is finally unveiled as the new man
Although they look forward to the ideas of the Argentinian
Green and Dietz believe their efforts will remain the same
I’ll do everything on the pitch to be back to the national team one day,” Green said
Dietz adds “The new coach doesn’t have an impact on the change in my mindset
you’ve to perform and you need to play consistently at the highest level at your club.”
They still see the chance at a fresh start for US soccer
There is probably a chance for every player
I’ve to do my work here in Furth and I can’t control the other things,” Green mentioned
“My goal is to play for the national team”
Dietz shared his enthusiasm for getting to know the coach on his first days at the job
“I obviously have the goal of joining the men’s national team
I’m very interested in what a new coach has to say and what he wants to see from players that have the chance to play,” Dietz added
Winning promotion with Greuther Furth would go a long way in boosting the chances of Dietz and Green
The Green and Whites had a great start to the season before the home draw to Elversberg and their first defeat at struggling Eintracht Braunschweig
but the last two games weren’t so good,” Green conceded
But the team started pretty well without me
Now we should make sure to stabilize that and develop further” Dietz adds
After this weekend’s game against league leaders Fortuna Dusseldorf
they will travel to third-placed Magdeburg.
Germany’s second tier gets more interesting this season
“We say it every year that it’s the best second division
Not only in terms of club size but also in its competitiveness,” Dietz agreed
Green recalled his time at Bayern as “the best club in the world at the time” and “the best squad I ever had.” And he expects them to come out on top when they host defending champions Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday
“Xabi (Alonso) was a great teammate of mine
but Bayern are much stronger than last season,” Green said
Under the former RB Leipzig coach Zorniger
Green is now playing the Xabi role at Furth
you’ll have more shots at goal and offensive actions,” Green explains
but I don’t really care as I can play both positions”
He values the importance of playing alongside top players, however. According to Transfermarkt, Furth’s captain Branimir Hrgota is the player who featured the most alongside Green.
“Branimir is a great player. If you play with good players, you understand the game of soccer well. I’m very happy he’s in our team and he’s the captain. It makes the game much easier for me. Our connection is always good,” Green concludes.
In six weeks, the US will hold its presidential election. As citizens of the country, both confirmed to World Soccer Talk that they’ll cast their votes.
“I’m registered to vote, and I’ve also followed the election. I’m also in touch with my family at home,” Dietz said. Green followed suit as he assured us by simply saying “Same here.”

SpVgg Fürth enjoyed great success in the 1910s and 1920s and established itself as one of the leading clubs in German football
competing internationally with other major teams such as FC Barcelona
SpVgg was relegated to the second division – albeit only briefly
there are few successes as remarkable as that of SpVgg Fürth in the 1949/50 season
The team was promoted again and immediately afterwards became South German champions and impressed in the matches for the German football championship with outstanding performances
the ‘top class’ football boot – extra-light – with the new strap guide has become an aid to victory”
A key element of this success was the choice of footwear: the 1st team of the tradition steeped SpVgg Fürth wore PUMA football boots exclusively in all matches from promotion to the championship
This decision was based on enthusiasm for the sporty design
the team relied on PUMA’s universal shoes
while in competitions they chose PUMA football boots especially developed for football
we have been looking for a football boot that meets the demands that today's players place on their football boots
The new PUMA football boot has proved its worth and met with general approval

To celebrate a successful season and the rewarding cooperation
a friendly match was played between the ‘Kleeblatt’ and the ‘PUMA Werkself’
Even in the years following the great success of 1950
the partnership was characterized by consistency
Numerous Fürth players wore PUMA football boots and provided valuable feedback for the improvement and further development of the boots

PUMA and SpVgg renewed their cooperation in 2020/21 and due to their special connection
this decision did not seem surprising: Through highs and lows – PUMA has accompanied SpVgg through many historic moments in the club’s history

one anchoring the club's push for promotion in the 2
It's a role he's comfortable with
If he can get through the things he has so far
"I don't think it was a big pressure," Green says
I see all the news and everything that has been written about me
I played for the best club in the world at that time [Bayern Munich]
probably with the best squad they ever had
It's hard to give advice to other players because every career is different
So you can't really say 'You have to do this
but then there are a lot of things that can go in this or in the other direction."
Bayern didn’t expect half of the squad to be out injured
FC Bayern have made alterations to their plans for the winter break due to the impact of current injuries on the squad and the need to manage workloads
the friendly match against Greuther Fürth scheduled for 6 January 2025 will not take place
Tickets already purchased for the game will be automatically and fully refunded by FC Bayern in due course
So it seems the game against the Austrian Cans is still on the table and will be the only friendly Bayern contests this winter
Hopefully Bayern’s return to Bundesliga football in the year will turn out better than it did in 2023
Deep underground lurks the banished dragon
Only the blood of a massive war can bring him back to the surface
Drachenstich is a 15th-century folk festival and dragon slaying pagaent in Furth im Wald
It is Germany’s oldest festival and steeped in 500 years of tradition
Drachenstich takes place yearly in early August
Drachenstich will have plenty of Bavarian regional cuisine
plus other classics like sweet roasted almonds
a specialty lager served at the Drachenstich medieval market
The festival centers around a traditional folk pageant
The pageant features a flesh-eating dragon; Tradinno is the largest fire-breathing
There is also a self-sacrificing young girl hoping to save her village
The enthusiasm from the crowds and actors makes for an enthralling experience even for non-German speakers
I recommend waiting to go to Drachenstich until mid-August when additional events start
Drachenstich actors and their entourage also participate
Cave Gladium- Mittelalterliches Lagerleben
when the entire town is transformed with over 100 traders and craftsmen stalls
Sip a refreshing “incomparable” Cave Gladium Beer while you jam out to some medieval tunes
view craftsmen practicing medieval professions
and watch fighters battling it out with swords and shields
This is a kid-friendly showing of the dragon pageant where kids can participate and win prizes
There is a children’s kite engraving performance and play course
The final hand for Event #15: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better has been dealt here at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas
Caleb Furth started the day with the chip lead
Furth overcame a field of 1,277 entrants and last defeated Jiyang Gan to take home the top prize of $265,361 and his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) Gold Bracelet
Furth had just under $400,000 in career tournament earnings to his name and a previous best cash of $80,000
a score he has more than tripled with today’s win
Furth mentioned when asked about his thoughts on winning his first bracelet
I'm going to be playing a bunch of PLO tournaments this summer"
Furth was at the very top of the counts for nearly the entire day leading up to his win
Gan came close to closing the gap on several occasions
Furth commented on the respect he has for his heads-up opponent
We've actually played a lot of cash together
he was probably eighth in chips (at that point)"
Only 14 players managed to find a bag for Day 3, and the eliminations were fast and furious from the start. PokerNews podcast co-host Mike Holtz was first to fall today in a preflop confrontation against Furth
Jason Daly began the day with the shortest stack but did an admirable job making a comeback. He found multiple double-ups and won several pots without showdown to keep himself in contention but was left with crumbs after being scooped by Andrew Paterson shortly after the final table began
and he became the first to fall at the final table
Daly was followed out the door by Mathias Bayer and two-time bracelet winner Tom Koral in eighth and seventh place respectively
Paterson enjoyed one of the bigger chip stacks throughout the first half of the day until Gan flopped the nut-flush and held to send Paterson tumbling down the chip counts. Furth got the rest of Paterson’s chips a few hands later after making a straight and a low
Fellow Canadian Michael Machugh was next to fall after getting it in preflop against Andreas Frohli only for Frohli to river trip sixes

SpVgg Greuther Fürth pick up Bochum
and Kaiserslautern professionals on loan | OneFootballGet German Football News
Two Bundesliga professionals and one German second division attacker have joined Greuther Fürth on loan in the last 24 hours. The Middle Franconians completed a quick “transfer hat trick” by acquiring Bochum defender Noah Loosli, Hoffenheim prospect Joshua Quarshie, and Kaiserslautern attacker Jannik Mause
Fürth have also acquired Union Berlin keeper Lennart Grill and former Mainz attacker Marlon Mustapha on loan during this especially busy January transfer window
Loosli and Quarshie are both central defenders. The 28-year-old Loosli brings with him the experience of ten Bundesliga appearances while the 20-year-old Quarshie has appeared just once for the TSG senior side
Quarshie nevertheless exhibited great potential in 22 appearances for country at the Germany U20 level and below
Bundesliga appearances in back-to-back loan stints with Fortuna Düsseldorf
Loosli joined Bochum from Grasshopper club Zürich in January 2023
He ended up making all ten of his top flight appearances under VfL trainer Thomas Letsch’s head-coaching regime last year
nor Dieter Hecking saw fit to use him after a poor start against Leipzig on match-day 24 last year
The Swiss youth international remains under contact with Bochum until 2026
he has a lot of quality in building up play and thus increases our flexibility,” SpVgg sporting director Stephan Fürstner said of Loosli
he quickly made it clear that he is really keen to take responsibility here.“
“[Jannik] is a very robust striker who works extremely hard with and against the ball,” Fürstner added of Mause
“He proved last season that he knows how to score goals and we are now hoping for exactly the same goal-scoring threat from him.”

The cast of the Angola Performing Arts Academy production of “Charlotte’s Web” pose on stage Friday during rehearsal at the T. Furth Center for the Performing Arts. The play is Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Emory Long, 9, of Auburn, rehearses Friday on the T. Furth Center for the Performing Arts stage as Wilbur the pig in “Charlotte’s Web.”
ANGOLA — Angola Performing Arts Academy will present “Charlotte’s Web” Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the T. Furth Center for the Performing Arts, 500 W. Maumee St.
The cast is in the middle of a two-week camp that concludes with the show, directed by Mary Kay Clark of Golden Lake. Clark also heads Excelsior Arts Academy in Auburn, which did “Charlotte’s Web” in February. With 35 years directing and playwriting experience, Clark adapted the play from the E.B. White classic. This is the second year for the partnership between the nonprofit Angola Performing Arts Academy and Excelsior Arts Academy.
Clark is assisted in rehearsals by a team that includes Nancy Klein of Milan, Michigan, choreographer Julie Arnold of Studio A, Acting Coach Patrick O’Brian and Colleen Everage of Angola, president of the Angola Performing Arts Academy Board of Directors.
Everage said rehearsals have been “fantastic.” Children from Steuben, DeKalb, LaGrange and Noble counties as well as Branch County, Michigan, are involved this year. They have learned about set building, costumes, props and teamwork.
Emma Blotter plays Charlotte the spider and Emory Long is Wilbur the pig.
Long, 9, of Auburn, described Wilbur as “sometimes worried … loving, kind, sweet.” She said practices are going well and she has learned, “You should never turn your back to the audience.”
Hadley Boyer, 10, of Angola was in last year’s Angola Performing Arts Academy play, “Aesop’s Fables.”
“I just love theater,” Boyer said. She has learned the impact of strong self expression.
“It’s really just how you use your voice and use your body movements,” she said.
In “Charlotte’s Web,” Boyer is Madge, a sassy nail tech.
“She really likes to gossip,” she said. “We’re in a group called the gossip girls.”
Twelve-year-old Milo Reeves of Angola has been involved in theater productions at Oak Farm Montessori School, Avilla. She has two roles in “Charlotte’s Web” – announcer and rooster. She said she has learned that ultimately the character you play is “based on you.”
“You have to be that character and be really funny,” Reeves explained.
Those who purchase tickets in advance at Sutton’s Deli or Joppa Cosmetics on Public Square may also get a tiny pink Wilbur toy. Tickets cost $10 for adults. Children will be admitted free with a paying adult.

How to add a pop of personality when styling your outdoor oasis
Oliver Furth, a fourth-generation Los Angeles native, A-List interior designer, and AD100 winner, is best known for his irreverent ability to blend different styles and eras seamlessly. He is a firm believer that making a home for oneself is in itself an act of optimism and the most important ingredient when designing any space is joy
Don’t be afraid to use a juxtaposition of materials when it comes to selecting upholstery fabrics, rugs, and outdoor furniture finishes
“Having a certain tension within materiality lends dynamism to a space and will encourage more interesting dialogs and unexpected connections,” says Furth
or soft against slick—any combination can elevate your style and create intrigue
Furth likes to incorporate live plants and trees whenever he can
embracing how “they change and grow over time in surprising ways
which can help keep things from feeling static.” Specific plant selections vary from project to project
but he suggests personality of the home and context play a big factor when choosing botanicals
Try extending the surrounding landscape into more intimate communal areas with a mix of small trees and lush shrubs in containers
Optimistic Interiors.’ Copyright © 2024 by Oliver Furth
When it comes to choosing one of the most important items to elevate an outdoor space
suggesting “it’s crucial to be able to see
and setting the mood for evenings alfresco is important to outdoor spaces’ usability.”
He also notes how it is wonderful to see the outside, even while you’re indoors. With outdoor lighting products spanning from discrete solar landscaping spotlights to architectural statements with table lanterns
a well-lit garden will extend your home’s enjoyability and livability throughout the year
No matter the size of your outdoor space, always add in a bit of nature. Oliver suggests even a small patio or balcony can be greatly improved by a single potted plant
adding “having plants to tend to will not only force you to spend some time outside connecting to the earth
but those few minutes per week watering and caring for a plant can greatly improve your experience living in your space.”
and so much more delivered straight to your door every quarter

As Cape Town prepares to host the ILGA World Conference
one of the largest global gatherings of LGBTI changemakers
the first keynote speakers have been announced
ILGA World revealed that Reverend and activist Mpho Tutu van Furth
United Nations Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Graeme Reid
and Brazil’s National Secretary for LGBTQIA+ Rights Symmy Larrat will be featured as keynote speakers
Tutu van Furth, the daughter of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Reid both have South African roots. In 2016, Tutu van Furth made headlines when the South African Anglican Church revoked her license as a priest after she married her wife
Reid, a South African scholar on gender, sexuality, LGBT issues, and HIV/AIDS, was in 2023 appointed as UN Independent Expert on Protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity
and one of the most prominent LGBTQIA+ leaders in Latin America
She is the first National Secretary for LGBTQIA+ Rights in the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship of Brazil
Other notable speakers include Dr Alvaro Bermejo
Director-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF)
and Afghan LGBT Organization (ALO) Director Artemis Akbary
More speakers will be announced in the coming days
hosted by local human rights organisations Iranti and Gender DynamiX
will take place in Cape Town from 11 to 15 November 2024
This marks the first time in 25 years that the conference returns to Africa
and allies from over 100 countries to address the ongoing global pushback against LGBTIQ+ rights
“We are thrilled that our membership has chosen to bring our conference back to Africa,” said ILGA World co-Secretaries General Luz Elena Aranda and Tuisina Ymania Brown
“LGBTI activists across Africa and the world are facing an unprecedented backlash
driven by both global trends and region-specific challenges”
They asserted that the conference “will serve as a crucial moment for LGBTI human rights defenders worldwide to unite and forge strong
meaningful solidarities—not only within the LGBTI community
the respective Executive Directors of Gender DynamiX and Iranti
added: “We are excited to host our global movement as it returns to Africa after such a long time
At a time when we see dangerous anti-rights discourse and narratives diluting into our regions from the Global North
hosting our global family will be a wonderful statement of unity and solidarity across borders.”
A constellation of other events will happen during and around the ILGA World Conference — including the inaugural International Pride Awards
and a strategic summit for intersectional and inclusive democracies
Over 800 participants are expected to attend the conference, with registration open until 11 October 2024. More information can be found at https://worldconference.ilga.org

SV Darmstadt 98's little trip around Germany continues. After the cup triumph in Dresden, the team goes straight on to the away game in Fürth. The second division game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth will kick off there on Saturday (November 2nd/1pm). You can find all the facts and figures about the Lilies' next game in our Top Facts.
… is the offensive of SV 98 under Florian Kohfeldt. In the two away games at Schalke and Karlsruhe, the Lilies scored an impressive eight goals and delivered pure spectacle. Unfortunately, the Darmstadt team also had to concede six goals. Nevertheless, the team under Kohfeldt is still unbeaten on a foreign pitch. The Lilies also achieved a spectacular 3-2 away win after extra time in the cup game during the week.
In total, there have already been 26 meetings between SpVgg Greuther Fürth and SV Darmstadt 98 in the 2nd Bundesliga. And in the end, the cloverleafs often came out on top. The Lilies were only able to win one of the last seven games. That was in December 2020, when the Darmstadt team won 4-0 away. Fürth, however, won three of the last seven games, and three more ended in a draw.
The defensive lines of both teams have this. Although Greuther Fürth only conceded four goals on the first five matchdays, in the following five games there were 13 in total – always at least two goals conceded per game. Darmstadt’s defense seems more vulnerable, especially away from home: the Lilies never conceded more than two goals per game at the Böllenfalltor in the Merck Stadium, but always conceded at least three away from home.
Aleksandar Vukotic is missing against Greuther Fürth due to a yellow card suspension. The SV 98 central defender saw his fifth yellow card of the current second division season in the home game against SSV Ulm.
We Lilies – Together for Nature Conservation! This was the motto of the 6th Clean-Up Day organised by SV Darmstadt 98 and the Krombacher Brewery last Sunday (May 4). Because carelessly discarded garbage, waste, and litter pose a major environmental problem, around 90 Lilies fans gathered in front of the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. Together, they set out to keep the Bölle and the surrounding region clean.

The decisive factor in the defeat in a largely evenly matched game was two set pieces, which HSV used to score their first two goals. In our analysis, we look back at a match that could have taken a different direction, especially in the opening stages.

Her research focused on themes of migration and manifest destiny in 19th century American literature
As the founder of Bluefish Editorial Services
which focuses mainly on academic clientele
Furth forged an alternate path from the traditional tenure track while still utilizing the research
writing and editing skills mastered during her Ph.D
What has your professional trajectory been since earning your Ph.D.
but quickly soured on the precarity and the low pay
I was fortunate enough to be able to take some time off
and after a year or so I started working for a small public policy research organization
It started out as an administrative position
but I soon transitioned into writing and editorial work
as well as facilitation and instructional design
A big part of that job was taking complicated policy questions and presenting them in a way that would allow people who hadn’t spent much (if any) time thinking about it to have a useful conversation about it
I knew that I wanted to keep working at that intersection of big ideas and effective communication
and that I loved working with people on their writing
and I founded Bluefish Editorial Services in 2014
Where are you based now and how would you describe your present job
but my editorial clients are from all over the country and overseas as well
Most of them are academics working in the humanities and social sciences
I employ a few subcontractors for specialties like bibliographies and technical subjects
but most of the projects are handled by me
My day-to-day varies: I do some straight copyediting and proofreading
and you’ll certainly find me wrangling commas and subject-verb agreement
But the bulk of my practice is substantive and developmental work — I will get into the structure and argumentation of a book or article sentence-by-sentence and paragraph-by-paragraph to make sure all the pieces fit together
or I’ll work extensively with an author as they shape a work in progress
It’s a great mix of high-level/big picture stuff and super-granular detail
And my clients are wonderful and are doing fascinating and important work — it’s really a joy to be able to work with them
What kinds of alignments do you feel there are between your Ph.D
Obviously working in language and literature has a strong alignment with editorial work
having first-hand experience working within the academy (combined with a lot of experience outside it) makes me a much better resource for my clients
especially early career and first-generation faculty
for whom the unwritten codes of academia can be especially challenging
Looking back at your time as a graduate student
what do you wish you would have known about opportunities for careers outside of the traditional tenure track
there seemed to me to be a fairly pervasive attitude that the tenure-track job at an R1 university was the only benchmark of success; anything else was less-than
I really wish there had been more candid discussion of the many opportunities that are out there for people with research
analytical and writing skills — and that people who chose an alternate path were viewed with curiosity and appreciation
Thinking back on graduate school as preparation for this career
what skill or tool do you think your education best developed that you rely upon now
It was my time in the classroom working with students on their writing
Being trained in teaching writing and rhetoric gave me an incredibly useful toolkit for working with clients — and not just on the technical side
The emotional side of editorial work is so often overlooked
their writing is not only the key to their professional success
My students at UCI taught me so much about how to approach editorial work with empathy and openness
What skills do you feel were least developed that would have helped you either transition to this field or work more capably in this field
There was definitely short shrift given to practicalities like how to draft a budget or bid out a proposal
And more broadly there was a tendency to focus so much on the core task of scholarship that everything else — not only administrative tasks but family
self-care avocations — was dismissed as a distraction from the “real work.” This is not exclusive to the academy
the university would embrace and model a healthier work-life balance
What advice would you give to current graduate students in the humanities
Be clear with your professional boundaries
it can be very tempting to sacrifice your wellbeing on that altar
But there are thousands of ways to map out a fulfilling professional life
Nothing you have done so far will be wasted
No matter what your career path ends up becoming
the things that brought you to this place — your curiosity
inventiveness — are what will serve you in the future
