asking the question why so many successful coaches come from the south-west of Germany you will automatically end up with one common denominator: Helmut Gross The Geislingen native has inspired generations of football coaches with his vision of covering spaces based around the position of the ball For former TSG head coaches Ralf Rangnick and Markus Gisdol but also a consultant and mentor for a long time Thomas Tuchel – they all came into contact with his footballing philosophy The trained bridge-building engineer had tactically dismantled football and reassembled it like a true tinkerer Helmut Groß led SC Geislingen into the German third tier in the late-1970s But the father of two did not seek the spotlight encouraging and inspiring coaches – and in doing so But Helmut Groß not only moulded many Hoffenheim head coaches he was also officially a scout at TSG from 2008 to 2012 the Geislingen native died at the age of 77 TSG are mourning the passing of not only a former employee Whether the latest developments of our team or the best deals in FANSHOP.Register now for the newsletter Germany always has many successful dressage riders in the pony consistently winning medals at the European championships The typical career of a young dressage rider in this country starts with the pony division followed by the juniors and the young riders though few are able to move up to Grand Prix Unfortunately focus is usually on those winning medals at German and European championships while there are equally talented riders who followed a different path to become a Grand Prix rider One of them is 17-year old Alexandra Stadelmayer from the south of Germany She has reached the highest levels earlier than many of her age without consistently taking part in the different age divisions When watching her ride one immediately notices that Alexandra represents a remarkable fine style which looks quite differently to what some other riders her age show while performing Alexandra’s mother Ulrike was among the best dressage riders in Baden-Württemberg competing in the mid 1990s on a Hanoverian called Weyden This liver chestnut was trained by Alexandra’s famous grandfather Fritz Stahlecker and was sold to Sven Rothenberger before the 1996 Olympics where he won a silver and bronze medal and went as Dutch team horse Stahlecker became famous with his quite revolutionary method called “HSH” (hand- saddle-hand) His daughter Ulrike has produced some very good international championship horses like Palladio So Alexandra was born into a very horsey family: “Horses has always been part of my life as all of my family like riding.” She started riding under the skilled tutelage of her mother and grandpa on very well trained and sensitive horses Alexandra’s show career began at the age of 6 when she participated in a lead-line class on her mother’s S-level horse Miró in her hometown of Geislingen an der Steige Lead-line classes are a popular start for small children in Germany but Alexandra did not continue like so many others competing on a riding pony Instead her grandpa gave her an extraordinary Christmas gift in 2003: the then 6-year old dark bay Hanoverian gelding Dix This talented horse turned out to carry Alexandra from “Reitabzeichen” (riding badge) to Grand Prix within the next six years When Stahlecker’s young grandchild got the horse Dix had already been trained by him from the ground in all the difficult movements which found more recognition after Weyden became that successful Its main principle is to teach the horses the collected movements from the ground at an early age.Stahlecker uses his own gear a special cavesson with side reins and an overcheck rein which is attached to the nosepiece The cavesson doesn’t include the typical iron parts on the nose but instead is very softly padded and comfortable for the horse The young horses have a snaffle in their mouth but just to get used to the feeling and not for any other use as the bit is not attached to anything at the beginning The advantage of this method is that the horses already know all the difficult movements before they are asked to perform them under the saddle much later Alexandra worked Dix under the supervision of her mum and her grandpa and formed a strong bond with the gelding which was bought as a weanling and named after a painting artist like many of Stahlecker’s horses are Stahlecker's second passion is the art of painting “My grandpa bought Dix (by Donnerschlag) because his dam Wievita is a full sister to Weyden and Dix was bred by Wilhelm and Christiane Köllner from Bodenteich” As a young horse Dix was a bit rebellious now and then but matured into a reliable and totally honest horse “He’s very cooperative and loves to work without any pressure Dix reacts to the finest of aids and is completely supple at the shows His special strength are the canter pirouettes,” Alexandra described her long time partner Dix and Alexandra didn’t focus on the typical junior competitions but started successfully at M- and S-level when she was just 14 years of age Yet Alexandra has taken part at the Junior Championships of Baden- Württemberg coming 4th in 2008 while already having won at S-level at 15 for whom juniors level is an easy thing due to the lack of collected movements in which he excels even placed 2nd in an Intermediaire II competition at CDN Waiblingen Alexandra’s grandfather has often said in public that for him dressage is not a sport who is accompanied to the shows by her parents loves to compete because “I get to know my standard of riding and new motivation” In 2009 Alexandra had the first opportunity to compete against several of Germany’s best Grand Prix riders at Grand Prix level at the renowned national show at Mannheim in May Of course she still lacked experience at this highest level but the style in which she competed was impressive and actually rather an art than a sport In Mannheim Dix was able to qualify for the Grand Prix Spécial Alexandra is currently in her last year of high school and is preparing for her final exams As time is limited and two young hopefuls are waiting to be taken over from her mum the decision has been made to part with Dix He was sold in capable hands at the end of 2009.Since then Alexandra has started to work with the two promising Hanoverians both bought as 2,5 years old at the Verden stallion market Liebermann is born in 2003 and now owned by Alexandra owned by Alexandra’s brother Matthias and previously competed by their mother According to Alexandra the horse has an outstanding talent for piaffe and passage Both horses have first been worked from the ground by Alexandra’s mum and are at S- level now Though it all sounds very promising Alexandra is cautious about her plans for the 2010 season: “All depends on the horses’ development but I am planning to start Liebermann at M-/S- level and Watteau probably at Grand Prix this or the next year.” One must assume Alexandra is completely concentrated on her grandfather’s legendary training method but she likes to look for new ideas everywhere and tries them out at home.Of course she favours her grandpa’s way of training: “I am thrilled by his training method All his horses are absolutely okay and have a great ability to collect which enables them to perform great piaffe and passage.” Alexandra does not have an equestrian idol in particular but likes Anky van Grunsven’s stallion Painted Black: “His ability to extend and his energy are admirable.” It will be interesting to see where the future will hold for a talent like Alexandra Like many of her age she’s dreaming of representing her country at an international championships one day To find out more saw them fall in the quarter-finals The 3-0 embarrassment led to calls for change one point from three games meant that Germany finished bottom of their group at Euro 2000 Die Mannschaft went all the way to the final Inspired by Oliver Kahn and helped with a few favourable results going their way the United States of America and South Korea on their way to losing the final to a Ronaldo-inspired Brazil they were put out of their misery: once again the Germans finished bottom of their group at the Euros they were world champions having deservedly reached at least the semi-finals of every major international tournament since their horror show in Portugal That was a fair reward for the tactical revolutions occurring in German football in the national team’s years of struggle The biggest change was how more clubs and coaches opted to move away from the sweeper (or libero) system that had been so successful for Germany in the early ‘90s Coaches like Volker Finke at Freiburg and Wolfgang Frank at Mainz were employing a back four, and perhaps the most impressive of all was Ralf Rangnick at Ulm, who were in the third and second divisions of German football, before finding their way to the Bundesliga after Rangnick left and it was at that club where he and Helmut Groß the man who he worked with on developing his back four and zonal marking strategies were revolutionizing coaching and football in Germany despite not being a name that was mentioned too often when speaking about the changes that occurred in German football He may not be very well known outside Germany He was never a top-level head coach; instead he focused on academy sides and laying the foundations for the future His work not only inspired players but created a generation of coaches that clubs across Europe have touted for years It could be said that if it wasn’t for Groß Rangnick’s career might have played out differently Groß played football at an amateur level and worked with local club FV Faurndau and SC Geislingen It was at the latter where he was able to implement his ideas best: in 1981 when he took over he introduced ball-oriented spatial coverage becoming the first club in Germany to employ the strategy German football was obsessed with the sweeper system while looking elsewhere and before his time in Europe coaches like Ernst Happel and Gyula Lóránt were focused on spatial coverage rather than traditional man-marking “I think those head coaches that are interesting are the ones that looked outside of Germany,” Groß said to Jonathan Harding for his book Mensch: Beyond the Cones about the need to look beyond his surroundings we always learnt more from Arrigo Sacchi in Italy who were European champions in 1984 with ball-oriented zonal marking.” he wanted to create something similar to the Dutch game He liked how they played but felt it wouldn’t work in Germany unless it was tweaked the players can save more energy by not running around senselessly He wanted his teams to convert that saved energy into aggressive pressing to keep their opponents under constant pressure Happel did something similar with his Dutch national team Groß left Geislingen for fellow sixth-division team VfL Kirchheim the club arranged a friendly against Lobanovskyi’s Dynamo Kyiv and earned 1-1 draw which is arguably the famous result in the club’s history and something that mightily impressed the opposition manager as well – he was surprised to see a club playing a similar style to his own team despite being so far down the German football ladder It was around this time that he developed a friendship with Rangnick as well joined the teaching staff of the Württemberg Football Association and was just as keen to learn about ball-oriented spatial coverage Groß also ended his coaching career at the time and joined the FA and the two would set out the philosophy for all the coaches working with them making Württemberg the first football association in Germany to play with a back four Groß’s vision was to have a uniform playing style for all the club’s youths and he was successful Rangnick would enjoy success with Groß as well progressing through the ranks at Stuttgart and even winning the national youth championship it also increased the reputation of the club who were now with an established style of how their youth teams should be playing and how their coaches should be taught While German football was content with the libero the people at Stuttgart were doing something different and setting the blueprint for the future “When three players flock to a ball that has just been lost But it’s controlled chaos and extremely creative,” Groß said Rangnick left his role at Stuttgart after the successful philosophies weren’t employed with the senior team but his work at the club would be carried on throughout his career especially in 1998 after he appeared on national television to discuss ball-oriented spatial coverage and zonal marking he was praised for his stints at clubs like Schalke Hoffenheim and most recently Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig Stuttgart became the home of the back four and Rangnick as well as Groß’s legacy was carried on by coaches that came after them The uniform playing style created a generation of coaches who would have top-level careers: Thomas Tuchel worked at Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain; Markus Gisdol (who is also from Geislingen) coached at Hamburg and currently FC Köln; Roger Schmidt was with Rangnick at Red Bull Salzburg and then Bayer Leverkusen; Alexander Zorniger was also with Rangnick at RB Leipzig; most famously Germany’s World Cup-winning head coach in 2014 also took inspiration “It can be compared with Ajax school,”  Thomas Tuchel once said “When Ralf Rangnick and Helmut Groß installed a new game system in Stuttgart at the end of the eighties and early 1990s merely being a part of the developments or picking up new tactical information is just a part of the process An important part of being a successful coach is social competence: dealing with personalities creating an environment that allows athletes to be at their best on a consistent basis and trying to build better relationships with people around them coaches need space to put their thoughts into practice – too many cooks do indeed spoil the broth they had plenty of money to become the football giant they are now but prior to Rangnick’s (and Groß’s) arrival Salzburg had the trophies but no clear long-term vision while their academy was struggling; Leipzig had the money and resources but were finding it difficult to get past the Bundesliga because their resources were invested in older ageing players and their playing style had no clear patterns Rangnick’s arrival and subsequent appointment of coaches like Schmidt Ralph Hasenhüttl and Julian Nagelsmann changed that There’s also the case of brining in younger players – so many of them from abroad – and making them buy into the philosophy that has made them so successful Being good football coaches and supplementing that with significant social competence in order to build a firm team spirit is important: that is something many from the Stuttgart school have succeeded in The value of their work was never doubted: Rangnick and Groß knew what they were doing and they persisted with it making it enjoyable from Stuttgart to Hoffenheim Speaking once again to Mensch: Beyond The Cones Groß tells Harding about his research on whether their pressing was effective We wanted to know whether our ball-oriented forwards defending led to winning the ball back quicker than zonal marking or man marking The professor we were working with measured the sprints in 1,000 situations in 100 games and noticed the more you sprint and the more players there are who sprint but he noticed – and we knew this but he was the first to prove it scientifically – that if I win the ball back with lots of sprints It’s no surprise that whenever Rangnick and Groß worked together The pair were at Hoffenheim and the Red Bull group ensuring both have a sustained rise to the top they have always been complimentary of each other and Rangnick sees Groß as an advisor consulting with him before making decisions at both clubs “Ralf knows that with me he has someone by my side who is not tied to the rules of the football business and can think outside the box,” Groß said to SPOX just after they left Hoffenheim Groß’s impact on the game can be seen in teams across Europe his coaching career came in a full circle: an idea that was once ridiculed was now the blueprint for success for some of the world’s finest teams Despite never being a head coach and mainly holding academy or advisory roles wherever he worked he was a vital figure behind the shaping of some of Germany’s finest coaches Featured Image: @GabFoligno / Getty Images – Mark Sandten – Bongarts Germany – WMF espresso fully automatic portafilter machine comes up with new inserts the portafilter into the machine and chooses the desired beverage – and that’s it Foaming milk at the same time is also child’s play with the WMF espresso In addition to a traditional manual steam spout the machine also has what is known as an “Auto Steam” function to automatically produce hot milk and milk foam in up to three different consistencies A second steam spout on the right-hand WMF Professional Coffee Machines has not lost sight of its German roots its headquarters in southern Germany has been home to WMF’s entire value chain – from the initial concept to the design and production of machines says WMF embraces a proud and customer-centric “Made in Germany” philosophy the geographical concentration of the entire value chain at the Geislingen site provides a key competitive advantage and is the secret behind our agility and efficiency,” Schlee says “Thanks to the close interdisciplinary collaboration between colleagues we are able to implement solutions quickly we discuss changes to existing solutions as well as new developments and trends almost every day As our production and assembly departments are literally on our doorstep and because we collaborate with many local partners we are able to incorporate this constant flow of ideas into our work within a very short time.” WMF’s process begins with the customer defining their specific coffee machine configuration from a broad range of standard modules which is then manufactured via a make-to-order production process a production order is created automatically and assembly is carried out in single batches All of the key components required for the coffee machines are preproduced and delivered to the final assembly line on a “just-in-time basis” to ensure that WMF’s production process is agile and efficient as preassembly and final assembly are located very close to each other final assembly takes the relevant assemblies from small buffers preproduction reacts by producing and filling the buffers This ensures that the right quantity is always produced while keeping delivery times short and stocks low,” Schlee says WMF’s preproduction focuses on turned parts such as grinder disks plus around 3000 different sheet-metal parts for various functional and design elements intensive quality assurance is carried out before the housing is added to the coffee machine and it is packaged ready for delivery “To ensure that our products deliver on the promise ‘Designed to Perform’ in real life and on a sustained basis WMF coffee machines must be able to adapt to any customer situation,” Schlee says “If we used make-to-stock production instead of just-in-time it would tie up huge operational and infrastructural resources for one thing we would always have to have products available in huge quantities to ensure that we had the right assemblies in stock for every customer configuration We are able to avoid these disadvantages by using a fully demand-based workflow control process based on the Kanban principle.” Kanban is a method of production process control oriented to the actual consumption of materials at the supply point and place of consumption This makes it possible to reduce local stocks of preliminary products in and near production which are then used in products of the next integration stage the key question is: ‘what is the best decision for the product?’ Quality and rapid availability of parts are undoubtedly the top priorities but it is also important to consider the total cost of ownership this is manifested in a stable network of largely European “Many of our regional partners deliver to our just-in-time production process several times a week These tightly scheduled delivery times allow us to plan on a short-term basis and enable dynamic development processes with no large stock volumes or lengthy response times where international supply chains are grinding to a halt due to the pandemic and materials such as plastic we have a clear market advantage and can continue to pursue our strategy of customer proximity without any major stumbling blocks.” The greatest challenge Schlee identifies of WMF’s customer centricity is supply chain management it is only worth running a site if it is operating at high capacity and producing products efficiently – including with the minimum acceptable stock levels this benchmark can develop into a planning tour de force,” he says “Process excellence with regard to planning and logistics is without doubt just as important as the actual technological expertise when it comes to long-term market leadership What’s the point of developing the most innovative machine in the world if you can’t deliver it due to a lack of parts And with 600 to 800 individual parts per machine Another core component of WMF’s in-house production is its software development and analytics to modern payment and IoT concepts such as those in the fields of electronics or injection moulding are procured from the relevant specialists… on both a national and an international scale This ensures the perfect mix of in-house production and external procurement for the products and for our customers,” Schlee says Schlee adds the manufacturer is not hindered by growing globalisation and digitalisation “In order to realise our strategy of customer proximity on a global scale we need to be networked with our customers and suppliers around the world Digitalisation and market integration help us enormously,” he says “This does not conflict with the ‘Made in Germany’ philosophy [Our] central innovation and production processes are concentrated at the Geislingen site and country-specific adaptations in terms of design or delivery times are what allow us to achieve international success.” Schlee says digitalisation is providing WMF with greater data availability and automation than was possible before “We have already applied the principles of automation to large parts of our preproduction Further concrete planning regarding partial automation will focus on the machine start-up and inspection processes the potential for automation is fairly low as we are not a mass producer and also have many variants,” Schlee says “We intend to step up our efforts to leverage the benefits of data availability with regard to all aspects of paperless production including transparent an interdisciplinary project team is working to establish transparent data flows with no media disruption between all supply chain participants – with the aim of using digitalisation to make the world of logistics a simpler place.” For more information, visit www.wmf-coffeemachines.com This article was first published in the November/December 2021 edition of Global
