When I was in my early 20s, I quit my job and rented a van
I had been living in Australia at the time for that job and spent three months traveling the country from south to north
I could just park the van and sleep wherever I wanted
I realized I desired a life with the freedom to go anywhere
Before living van life
I was on track for a traditional finance career
I studied math and engineering in France and started working in predictive finance after graduation
I moved up in corporate positions around the globe until I got that job in Australia
It came with good pay and a nice lifestyle
After traveling around Australia
I spotted a guy working on his laptop on the beach
He explained to me that he had an e-commerce company and was able to make about $1,000 a month working from anywhere
I returned to my parents' home in Morocco and asked them to borrow €2,000 (about $2,100) to start an e-commerce company
I made $10,000 selling phone cases that looked like Gameboys
I became very interested in cryptocurrencies and asked my networks if anyone knew a crypto expert
Tan was also running his own successful business at the time. We were both in our mid-20s and spent time exchanging information about business and crypto
We could vibe personally and professionally
Our business has been so successful because we're opposites
He has an uncanny ability to make order out of chaos
When you achieve financial success like ours at such a young age
it can be difficult to stay connected to reality
you forget you're living a really special life
Tan and I live in the same apartment building in Dubai
We didn't plan for that — it just happened
We have about 10 people who help us optimize our lives
We try to make sure that every aspect of our day is optimized in all aspects
We make sure to have time in our schedule to date
because we don't want any aspect of our lives to be neglected
we're also planning to attend more spiritual retreats
We're intentional about living at a pace that we'll be able to sustain for the next 40 to 60 years

He said they are also expecting good support from overseas visitors to the venues
After the three-day staging at the National Stadium in Jamaica starting on Friday
the four-meet series will have stops in Miami
Gera said Jamaica deserves a meet of this quality
“I know that Kingston’s never hosted a Diamond League
It’s never hosted a senior World Championships
and that’s what we’re bringing,” Gera told the Jamaica Observer during the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday

“[They are] going toe-to-toe for the first time
and we an amazing cadre of other six other racers who are going to be going up toe-to-toe against them
so it is going to be excitement from the very first race to the last race
you’re going to see Olympic-quality racers just going head-to-head in races that all matter,” he said
We have 35 medallists from Paris who are coming and at this stage we have 16 Jamaican sprinters who are coming out and racing with us
“They made their names here for the first time
and for them to come back and launch our league here in Kingston as the stars of our new league
So you’ll see the best racing in the world,” Gera noted
Gera said ticket sales had been going well overseas
“So far we’ve heard from people all the way from New York to Philadelphia
and folks who go to the Penn Relays on a regular basis
We think we have a significant fan base who will actually be flying in for this
We’ve sold a lot of tickets in the United States for Kingston
so we’re really excited to actually be having people
“I know I have at least 15 people who are coming here to Jamaica for the first time
because they know me and they’re part of this
so I think when you look across our entire organisation
who are coming to Jamaica for the first time to come see this meet,” he said
The Grand Slam Track president said there will be other activities to complement the main event
starting with a 5K that was held on Sunday
“We’re going to have a number of other activities at the venue
For kids and families we’re going to have face painters
we’re going to be actually painting a mural over the course of the entire weekend
just like the live music that’s going off behind us right now
We have a couple of local Jamaican acts actually coming out
and artists and musicians to come out and actually be a part of it
It’s gonna be real Festival of Speed,” Gera boasted

Oromo region of Ethiopia has seen recurring ethnic based attacks by Qerroo mobs over the past six years
Toronto – Residents in the Jimma Zone of the Oromia Region have confirmed that civilians were killed and thousands displaced since last Thursday
The incident occurred in the Gera District of the zone
where at least ten people lost their lives
there are individuals whose whereabouts remain unknown
reported that the attack unfolded following the killing of a businessman
had reportedly been granted land taken from approximately 200 farmers
The identities of those responsible for the killing have not been established
known as “Qeerroo,” organized themselves and carried out attacks targeting individuals based on identity
The killing of the businessman was allegedly linked to ethnic Amhara living in the area without any investigation
George Church in Gera District described the situation
“When the gunfire was intense [Wednesday night]
We did not know anything.” He was referring to his and his family’s condition during the night of the attack
As the youth and special forces of the Oromia Region advanced
the priest fled his home in his nightclothes along with his five-year-old daughter and spouse
His house was set ablaze and reduced to ashes
Thousands of houses were reportedly burned.
Another resident from the area told BBC Amharic
“The country [referring to the kebele in the district] could not be seen
It was fire all over the place—flames everywhere.”
Eyewitnesses were clear that those targeted were ethnic Amhara. Borkena reported the incident last Saturday
a news source with links to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church
including those forced to flee to neighboring regions in southern Ethiopia
and it appears that the ethnic Amhara targeted in the attack were followers of the Orthodox Church
Government security and defense force members were reportedly deployed to the area
but they allegedly failed to stop the attacks and the burning of houses
Residents who managed to escape the attack told BBC Amharic
“How can they be quiet while a house is burning
they could not keep silent while houses are burning… Had they been genuine law enforcement bodies
they could have stopped them and told them to calm down.”
The Oromia Regional State has described the massacre in Gera
as an “incident,” according to a BBC Amharic report
the regional government did not provide detailed information about the event
Based on extensive news coverage Borkena has been publishing for several years now
Qeerroo mob attacks appear to be a recurring and prevalent occurrence in the Oromia region of Ethiopia
These attacks often seem to be triggered by the killing of an ethnic Oromo civilian or prominent figure
when the prominent singer Hachalu was killed
an angry mob vandalized and pillaged businesses

and why Tijuana is having a creative revolution
This week on The Trip podcast: Journalist Jorge Nieto on covering Tijuana’s good and bad days
and what happens when you accidentally get the wrong beer for members of the Sinaloa cartel
A former mayor with a taste for exotic animals is keeping a tradition that many consider savage alive
Thornburgh: How did you end up in the States
my mother picked my sister and I up from Nayarit when I was nine
My grandparents told me that I was 45 days old when she left
I didn’t see her for all my infant years
Thornburgh: It was your grandparents raising you and your sister
but I didn’t know she was my mother back then
“I’m your mom,” and I said
“Hell no,” and I ran towards my grandfather and grabbed his leg
and I told him that there was a lady telling me that she was my mom
It was hard to even call her ‘mom’ at the beginning of my journey with her
My mom tells me that I cried the whole way to Tijuana
You were being taken away from everything you knew
Thornburgh: It’s not just leaving all the people
but you’re leaving small-town Nayarit
and then from there I lived my life a couple of blocks away from Dodger Stadium
I assume you didn’t speak English when you came to the States
I didn’t understand what they were saying
and I would answer with a Spanish bad word and take off on them
Thornburgh: Why did your mother want to take you to the U.S.
Gámez: She said the reason she took me was for a better life
so I wouldn’t be a burden on my grandparents
That’s what she told me when I was a little kid
People need to rethink what a better life means sometimes
where white Americans always have this idea that people are coming up from Mexico because life is just so bitching in the States
But life is hard in a lot of places in the States also
but I couldn’t imagine a tougher situation than early ’90s South Central Los Angeles
and especially during the Rodney King riots
four main boulevards from where the rioting happened
Gámez: That’s when everything just cracked down
but my mom didn’t let me because I was a little kid
That feeling of being vulnerable and being under attack and not knowing how to defend yourself
was that ultimately what drove you to kind of hook up with gangs
that did drive me to associate with a gang
that was pushing me because I couldn’t accept my mother and what she had done
I kept asking her why she picked up my sister and I late
when she had brought my other brothers with her initially
Thornburgh: Your other brothers had been living with her the whole time
Thornburgh: Did she ever give you an answer that satisfied you
the answer I got is that she was not ready financially
I didn’t find that explanation reasonable at that moment
I was holding that grudge for a good minute
just out of the blue—I was in high school—I started falling off the wagon
That’s when I started going off track
It was to replace the family that you were disconnected with
At that moment I was crashing a lot with my older brothers
and the gang became my family and my home boys became my brothers
I take back what I did.” You can’t take it back
The bullet missed my heart by a couple of centimeters
Thornburgh: Do you regret your time in the gang
When I was doing all this little mumbo jumbo
but now when I see myself in a situation where I’m in jail
in a situation where I’m in a wheelchair
because I wanted to be out there in the street
Thornburgh: Tell me about when you got shot
and I thought it was still too early to stop the party
and she didn’t want to lend it to me because I was drunk
Thornburgh: He took you to a place you shouldn’t have been
Gámez: I don’t blame my brother at all
I won’t say it’s good it happened to me
if that bullet had hit him I would have had a guilty conscience—if he were in a wheelchair chair because of me
I don’t think I would have slept well
I’m not saying I’m thankful because it happened to me
but that I keep in mind that it was my fault
Thornburgh: So you don’t look at the people who shot you and say that’s a special kind of evil
It was just all part of this system you were all in
Don’t expect when you play in the mud stay clean
If you see yourself on the other side of the coin and think like them
that happened because I was playing in the mud
Thornburgh: And you were and are paralyzed from the waist down
Gámez: Further up than from the waist down
It missed my heart by a couple of centimeters
And then it busted one of my lungs and it went straight to the spine
From looking at the world standing up and looking down
The first year of being in a wheelchair is one of the roughest ones out there
