Do not sell or share my personal information:
Kol Van Giesen was just eleven months old when he first set foot—or perhaps more precisely
The camp connection runs deep in his family.
told him that The Lair of the Golden Bear was looking for a Camp Doctor
The doctor’s family could stay for free.
spent their summers with the whole family at the Lair
Doctor Van Giesen has missed only one summer—during COVID
working together on the Maintenance Crew at Camp Gold
He overlapped with his cousin Ian at the Lair too
Kol and I sat down over acai bowls to talk about his latest adventure
he had just wrapped up his time on the advance team for vice-presidential candidate Governor Tim Walz.
He’d fly into swing-state cities days before the governor
I was curious about what his experience as a Lair staffer had to do with it all
how those summers might have shaped the way he approached the high-stakes world of politics
Note: Kol’s answers have been edited for clarity and flow
Cal Alumni Association (CAA): How did the pace of working a campaign compare to the energy and intensity of a summer at the Lair
Kol Van Giesen (KVG): I was on the Maintenance Crew at the Lair
it’s working on a team and working toward a common goal
There are a lot of parallels to the campaign you can draw there.
Having worked at the Lair helped me to work harder on the campaign
A lot of people aren’t cut out for work on the campaign because they’re not willing to do whatever it takes to succeed
and the mentality of working hard and working until the job is done
was important both in Pinecrest and on the trail
You have to be willing to go with the flow
Both jobs were right up my alley because I got to always be moving around.
CAA: How did the sense of community you helped create at the Lair compare to the teamwork needed on the campaign
KVG: The Lair is the first job I had that motivated me to not want to let the team down
people who weren’t going to just slack off
I never looked to my right or my left and thought ‘Oh
CAA: What did your time at the Lair teach you about communicating with a diverse range of people
and how did you apply what you learned to connect with folks on the campaign trail
KVG: The whole underlying part of working at the Lair is that you get to meet thousands of people during the summer
You get the chance to interact with people every second of every day if you want to
it was so important to know how to talk to different people
You’re not gonna talk to the Secret Service in the same way that you’re gonna talk to a student at a university who’s introducing Governor Walz
There’s a certain disposition you need to use with each group of people and it’s really important to be able to figure that out quickly
Working at the Lair helped me hone my skills in doing that.
people were very anti or pro what we were doing
We had people who were unwilling to host us or people who were unwilling to have the Governor fly into their airport
I think that goes back to my point about people at the Lair and learning how to talk to them
Some people come right out and tell you what their problem is
Some people like to be told exactly what’s going on
Some people just like to have a conversation
Figuring out people’s tendencies was super important for getting things done on the trail.
CAA: Can you think of a specific moment on the campaign trail where you thought
KVG: Moments when things seemed to be going wrong
Governor Walz was supposed to do a meet and greet
but the people he was supposed to be meeting and greeting weren’t in the right places.
I thought about what I would do at the Lair
How would I handle this situation when it’s stressful
it was ‘We’re gonna pause him coming off the plane
and we’re just gonna make it work.’ The Lair teaches you to improvise and make it happen
you were part of a team that often had to think on its feet
How did that flexibility help you on the campaign trail
KVG: You have to be willing and able to get on an airplane at an hour’s notice and get to a certain city
You show up somewhere you’ve never been and the only instruction is ‘Get to this hotel and we’ll be in touch tomorrow.’ You have to do so much on your own that
if I had never worked at the Lair then I never would’ve had the confidence to do it
I think a lot of people on the campaign would fold under that pressure
You have to have it within you to figure it out on the fly
CAA: What do you think makes the Lair such a unique training ground for future leaders
KVG: It’s learning to do the most with the least
No one cares about your little team in Atlanta
You have to take a little responsibility and a little control over how you want things to turn out
The Lair really teaches you how to self-start and how to be self-accountable.
I also think that the Lair breeds leaders because once you’re able to be your true self
leading in the way that you want to lead is easier
everybody is given the opportunity to be themselves and be confident in that
you come out of your shell and you have a better idea of who you are
you’re able to translate that ability of being your true self to the rest of the world
Good leaders are built from believing in themselves and believing what they’re saying first
The Lair helps you hone in on what that is for you and then gives you the confidence to go after it.
Kol’s reflections reveal just how deeply the lessons of the Lair resonate
the Van Giesens started something that stuck
A week in the woods grew into a legacy of growth
Kol carries those lessons forward: family matters
and the work you do should mean something.
or to direct the choreography of a governor’s schedule
It ripples outward into a way of being: rooted

They moved to California in 2021 and were coming up on their second wedding anniversary in September
The couple, 2016 graduates of Belle Plaine High School, were “building their dream life together living in California,” friends posted on an online fund-raising page that was started to help with Ally Giesen’s medical expenses and arrangements needed for her husband.
Bode said Ally Giesen’s condition has stabilized, but she remained in intensive care Thursday at Kaweah Health Medical Center in Visalia with fractures in her back and neck.
Late Thursday afternoon, the Highway Patrol gave this account of the crash:
The SUV, driven by 38-year-old Ricardo Herrera, crashed shortly after 9 a.m. on northbound State Route 99 after Herrera drifted onto the left shoulder and grazed a guardrail. Herrera steered to the right and rolled the vehicle, which landed wheels up on the grassy embankment.
Bystanders rushed in, got the SUV upright and attempted to remove the Giesens from the wreckage.
The Highway Patrol did not indicate why Herrera lost control of the vehicle, but it did not appear that he was impaired by drugs or alcohol. He declined medical treatment.

Several people have already slept that extra hour. Not all states and U.S. territories participate in daylight saving time.
Hawaii and Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation) do not observe daylight saving time
Here's why the two states don't observe daylight saving time:
In 2022, the U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act. However, according to The Hill
the act wasn't a priority in the House of Representatives and there was a disagreement as to whether daylight saving time or standard time should be the law of the land
which never made it to President Joe Biden's desk

While there is spending on both sides, the most noticeable difference between these two camps is funding sources. A look at All of Mpls’ 2024 campaign finance report, which Payne conveniently linked in his commentary, shows that over 99% of the organization’s money came from Minnesota residents and unions — people who live here, know our city and care about the local outcomes.
On the other hand, the Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign, and its successor, the Minneapolis for the Many PAC (which is now spending on behalf of a subset of council members, including Payne) raised funds from primarily national sources. In 2024, 87% of Minneapolis for the Many’s funding came from a single Massachusetts-based fund.
I give to political campaigns when the candidates’ messages resonate with my values and experience as a Minneapolis resident. I’d rather my elected officials practice good governance than stall progress with unproductive activism and unrealistic agendas. I’d rather we support workers and local businesses than demonize economic development. I’d rather we invest in public safety than defund the police.
Apparently Payne believes it is fair to baselessly compare a progressive Democrat like Jacob Frey to Elon Musk, but it is unfair for Payne to be criticized for his own votes, actions and clear statements on his own website.
So, do I buy Payne’s argument that big donors are somehow spinning a message to undermine the far left unbeknownst to naive Minneapolis voters? No. Because there’s money on both sides, and we all read the newspaper.
What I really took away from Payne’s commentary is that his argument is the desperate kind you make when you’re short on ideas. Or maybe it’s that his ideas are not winning ideas. Despite his powerful position on the City Council, he doesn’t seem to get anything meaningful done. So he spends his time complaining about other Democrats and comparing them to the single-most undemocratic leader this country has seen — apparently with a straight face.
The Democratic Socialist majority on the City Council thinks the answer to the far right is to swing farther left. This is the exact wrong approach and leaves many progressive Democrats feeling alienated from their local representatives.
Hopefully, this year’s election will be a contest of ideas on how to improve our city at the municipal level, not a maladapted proxy war for national politics. If it is, I believe it will deliver the change that our city deserves.

One winery that is making a big splash in the non-alcoholic category is Giesen
but only started producing its zero alcohol wines in early 2020
hosted an online tasting of six of their zero alcohol wines
and explained the special winemaking process used to maintain aromas and flavors while removing the alcohol
‘High quality non-alcoholic wine depends on two factors – high-quality grapes and a process to delicately remove the alcohol,” stated Duncan Shouler
head winemaker for the Giesen-Zero wine portfolio
It turns out that the delicate process is similar to what the perfume industry uses to extract aromas
To date Giesen has developed and released seven different varieties of non-alcoholic wine: sparkling brut
The wines are also low calorie and low carb – ranging from 19 to 33 calories and 4.5 to 9 carbs per 5-ounce serving
Head Winemaker at Giesen Winery in New Zealand
The grapes that go into the zero alcohol wine are sourced from these vineyards
#2) Produce Wine in Same Fashion: The grapes are fermented in the same manner as traditional wine
usually in a stainless steel tank with yeast
Next the white and rosé wines are aged for several months in tank
The red wines are fermented and aged with oak chips and staves to provide a hint of toasty oak
Then Alcohol: There are several methods to remove alcohol from wine
but Duncan says they prefer to use the spinning cone technology
because it is really good at extracting aroma
and then slowly heat up the wine and remove the alcohol,” stated Duncan
#4) Blend All Components: The last step is to blend the aromas and the dealcoholized wine back together
along with a small amount of pure grape juice (no sugar is added to the wine)
they add a small amount of SO2 (around 30 ppm free) to protect the wine
“The end result is wine that is 0.35 to 0.4% alcohol
In the past non-alcoholic wines have received a ‘bad rap’ because they either taste too thin or too sweet – like drinking grape juice
and some of the Giesen wine are a testament to this – especially if you like dry wines – which are quite popular in New Zealand and Australia
Duncan led us through a tastings of six wines
and my personal favorites were the Giesen Pinot Grigio and Sparkling Brut
but all six wines are appealing for Dry January
Following are some brief notes on the wines
with calories and carbs calculated for a 5-ounce glass serving:
Giesen Zero Pinot Grigio = nose of pear with a hint of floral
with tart green apple and good texture on the palate
It ends with a surprisingly long and refreshing finish
Giesen Zero Sparkling Brut = light fresh nose with ripe golden apple and lemon; frothy bubbles in the beginning that transition to a pleasant pétillance on palate
tart strawberry and rhubarb on nose and palate
Giesen Zero Riesling (semi-sweet) = A hint of classic diesel on nose
Nice texture with good acidity and decent length
Lingers on the palate in a pleasant manner
Giesen Zero Sauvignon Blanc – Classic gooseberry and grass on nose
which follows through on palate with strong lime and a hint of kiwi
Giesen Zero Red Blend – a surprisingly aromatic nose with ripe berries
A fine effort – given that producing dry red non-alcoholic wines is very challenging
This wine could even stand up to heartier dishes
such as pork with mushrooms and hard cheeses
Duncan said the best sellers were the “sauvignon blanc
but the red blend is also gaining in popularity.”
The number of non-alcoholic wine brands is growing, and some classic brands, such as Fre have just released some new varietals, such as their Fre Sauvignon Blanc
This zero-alcohol wine features the classic grassy
but bursts with melon and sweet ruby grapefruit on the palate
Other popular brands include Arial

“The Giesens are truly focused on quality
both from a vineyard and a business perspective,” says Pacific Highway’s Giordano
He explains that the Giesens own half of Pacific Highway and that they control the destiny of their wines through their distribution partnerships
“They have a strong belief in integrity,” Giordano says
it represents the highest level of quality.”
they had only 75 hectares of vines; today they have more than 1,500
the Giesens challenged their winemaking team to push boundaries and focus on cultivating dozens of small batch wines—by experimenting with commercial and native yeasts
and employing a mix of viticultural and winemaking techniques
The results during this creative period formed the backbone of Giesen’s premium winemaking
Their first trial wine was released in 2010
It was a super-premium traditionally fermented Sauvignon Blanc called The August 1888; it paid homage to the Giesen brothers’ grandfather—August Giesen—who was a sommelier and restaurateur
Giesen’s wines have continued to receive international acclaim and accolades
the Giesens are the leading buyers in New Zealand of German 1,000-liter Fuder barrels
which provide optimal conditions for lees aging
Approximately 20 percent of Giesen’s vineyards are organically farmed and certified—or in transition
This includes the prized organic Clayvin vineyard
Marlborough’s first significant hillside cru
It’s a significant addition to Giesen’s vineyard holdings and bolsters its winemaking innovation and premium-wine portfolio
The microsites across Giesen’s vineyards yield fruit with diverse flavor profiles
The Estate Series showcases distinctive regional varieties
The Single Vineyard Selections embody the unique terroir where they’re cultivated
Giesen’s signature Estate single-varietal Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wines from the 2017 and 2016 vintages
are two excellent candidates for by-the-glass menus
are likely to have at least one Sauvignon Blanc (since the variety is so popular)
and the Giesen Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2017 really can’t be beat
It’s an aromatically expressive wine with concentrated flavors of freshly cut herbs
The regional typicity of the Wairau Valley is also demonstrated in the brightness of its fruit and its tight
“it offers a depth and composition that punches above its weight.”
Pinot Noir on a BTG list is a different proposition
for a consumer willing to take a journey and explore what New Zealand Pinot Noir has to offer
the Giesen Estate Pinot Noir 2016 will be eye-opening
This vibrant wine provides juicy notes of red cherry
“with a lush mouthfeel and a finish that hangs on.”

it’s easy to feel defeated and helpless
David Giesen tells us how he stays hopeful
Some Wednesdays ago in the dark of morning I was awakened by the sound of an electric saw blade on metal
Instantly I knew what was going on and dashed out the door in my boxers with a flashlight
prepared to confront those thieving my Toyota Prius’ catalytic convertor
I was met by an even brighter flashlight stuck in my face
In a millisecond I determined to be no dead or injured hero
Thirty seconds later the thieves were gone
and uncivil behavior blow like dead leaves down the sidewalks of San Francisco these days
and to experience some of that violation of person and property directly is terribly discouraging
but I want to tell you what happened next because it might just startle all of us awake in a spirit of possibility
I fantasized brutal interventions I wanted to smash the thieves with
Martin Luther King’s life and legacy came to mind “What if,” I thought
“What if I had gone out the front door and done something the desperate thieves had never expected
What if I had asked them to tell me about their lives and circumstances
but I further fantasized society at large engaging in such revolutionary thoughts
and listen to all those who act in uncivil
What if we began by not thinking the perpetrators of crime to be congenitally criminal
I don’t have a patent medicine to sell here that will heal our city
but I am confident there’s a cure to be found in Martin Luther King’s revolutionary alternatives to conventional crime and punishment
