The fancy model trains produced by renowned toymaking company Maerklin were a hit with GIs in the aftermath of World War II when U.S
forces set up shop around the German town of Goppingen
the Maerklineum museum is dedicated to telling the company’s history and showcasing some of the toys that made its reputation
I arrived with an awareness of the model trains but little else pertaining to the Maerklin story
the information panels in English did a good job of filling me in on the details
the company made its name on the high quality of the metal toys developed at its factory about 30 miles southeast of Stuttgart
knowing some of the background and Goppingen’s history as an old U.S
Army garrison town made my tour more enriching
They have the sturdy look of toys from a bygone era when things were built to last
the company was already a major name for high-end toys
A few cargo car models that caught my eye were made for U.S
The models advertised the big American beer brands of the time: Pabst Blue Ribbon
“the beer that made Milwaukee famous,” and Budweiser
which even then was called the “king of beers.”
the museum also displays some of the other toys it was known for in the early days of the company
such as dollhouses and miniature sets to decorate them
There also are model cars and replicas of German train stations
there is an elaborate setup of a model train track coursing around a German town
weren’t immune from becoming part of the Nazi war machine during World War II
Maerklin was required to use its manufacturing prowess to develop telecommunications equipment
And it did so with the forced labor of foreign workers
Young and old alike seemed to check out the displays in earnest
a sign of the multigenerational appeal of model trains
The gift shop has a huge collection of model trains
but probably wouldn’t have if I was more of an enthusiast

where Doreen worked in public affairs and Franklin oversaw logistics for a combat unit
and they stopped talking only when she needed to snap a photograph — her assignment that night
could you bring a copy to my office?" Franklin asked when he walked Doreen to her car
I didn't think we'd ever cross paths," she said
Because Doreen was an enlisted private first class and Franklin an officer — a major — any personal relationship between them was
as the people of Goeppingen might have said
"He was gentlemanly in the old-school way," said Doreen
They tried to keep their growing feelings secret
the chief of staff called Franklin into his office
but the couple agreed ending things was the only logical choice
a few months before Doreen was to move to the Vint Hill Farms Station near Warrenton
they saw each other across the room at a party
They saw each other a few more times but couldn't make it work
Doreen said many women were swooning over Franklin
"I thought I would always have to be competing
and I was not equipped to deal with that." Also
she was ready to build a life with someone
would want to settle down again anytime soon
Franklin wasn't aware of any swooning or Doreen's anxious feelings about him
All he knew was that which had been wonderful no longer worked
She transitioned from active duty to the Army Reserve in 1981
leaving the service a few years later as a sergeant
Doreen married in 1987 and worked as a secretary until the birth of her daughter
He retired from the Army as a colonel in 1993
then held upper-management positions for several defense industry contractors
Doreen and her then-husband moved to Valparaiso
where she remained after they separated in 2009
Franklin had fleetingly crossed her mind over the years
"I had this feeling that I should find him
that he needed me." She even told Sarah about their long-ago love
all the while telling herself looking for Franklin was a terrible idea
Doreen had Chinese takeout and cracked open her fortune: "You will take a chance in the near future." It felt like a sign
She unsuccessfully searched Facebook for Franklin
"I think your dad may be someone I was stationed with in Germany," she messaged him
Trenton gave his dad Doreen's email address
and she never left my heart," said Franklin
who separated from his second wife in 2011
He had wanted to find Doreen but did not know her married name
Emails led to phone calls and then to a June meeting at the airport in Huntsville
it was like time had stood still," Doreen said
confirmed their chemistry and connection were strong
"I fell back in love with him in our emails and phone calls" she said
"There was this tenderness in the way that he talked to me
It was everything that I had ever wanted in a relationship but had never had before."
Franklin said his feelings for her were overwhelming
as was the sudden knowledge that with Doreen
"It was the most miraculous thing that ever came over me," he said
firm with a Department of Defense contract that required relocation to the Republic of Georgia
they wanted to make a home somewhere in the Northeast
A case of dry eye brought Franklin to Wills Eye Hospital
Franklin and Doreen decided years ago they would eventually marry
Doreen started emailing him engagement ring photos
Franklin said a package was coming and he needed it right away
he returned to the living room and sat next to her on the sofa
and I don't want to wait another minute," he said
The couple wed and celebrated at the Dandelion
Their 18 guests included Doreen's daughter
Officiant Sally Weaver began the short ceremony with a reminder that all should silence their phones
"Please excuse me!" said the bride before leaving the altar to find her purse
Sally shared a little of the couple's story
and invited them to say a few words to each other
Franklin was perplexed when Doreen bent down and took off her shoe
She retrieved and read from a tiny rectangle of paper
"You will take a chance in the near future." This fortune cookie message
was the sign that gave her the courage to find him
"It is the best thing I ever did," she said
but she managed to tell Doreen that the long
separate journeys that had brought them back together were worth every minute
"We were holding hands and looking right at each other as Doreen was saying her words
and I just felt so warm and happy," Franklin said
"We had been in love and together for so long
The wedding did not feel like a celebration of one moment
but a celebration of all the moments leading up to it and all the moments yet to come
The bargains: On the morning of the wedding
Doreen and her daughter spent $100 on bouquets at Giant and rearranged them into their bouquets and seven vases purchased for 98 cents each
The bride's dress was $29 at Nordstrom Rack
The splurge: "We went first-class on the menu," Franklin said
we figured we could bump it up a little bit."

Former EHF Cup winners Frisch Auf Göppingen will try to claim yet another trophy at the EHF Finals Men 2023 in May in Flensburg, after the German side booked their ticket with a 31:27 win at RK Nexe in the second leg of the EHF European League Men quarter-finals on Tuesday
That result sent Göppingen through with a 13-goal overall victory
The nine-goal advantage from the first leg Göppingen brought with them to Croatia was more than enough to qualify for the pinnacle event of the season
Nexe could not make a decisive run for a comeback and repeat last season's success
RK Nexe vs Frisch Auf Göppingen 27:31 (12:13)First leg 23:32 – Göppingen win 63:50 on aggregate
Nexe's defence was at a high level from the start
but the attack did not follow with the same intensity
the home side scored their first goal after five minutes of play while Göppingen were already up by two
Goalkeeper Mihailo Radovanovic stood out in the first half
having seven saves and never dropping below 40 per cent of saves
Nexe managed to turn the momentum the last 10 minutes as the Croatian hosts made the best out of turnovers; Dominik Markusic scored for their first lead in the game and gave a spark of hope
Göppingen once again turned the score in their favour and never looked back

It was all level throughout the first 15 minutes of the second half
Nexe's lack of concentration led to technical fouls which Göppingen used for counterattacks
Backed by the advantage from the first leg
Göppingen had long decided the tie by then
Nexe could not keep up with the imposed pace and was only trying to soothe the defeat at their farewell from the European season
They came close to narrowing it down to two but again Göppingen's fast reaction delivered a 31:27 win with a full-blown team action: 12 out of 13 field players contributed at least once to the German success
with Josip Šarac being the most successful with six goals

Granollers remain unbeaten in Flensburg and make history: After winning the second leg of the quarter-final against SG Flensburg-Handewitt in Campushalle in April
the Spanish side beat Frisch Auf Göppingen in the second semi of the EHF Finals in the same place
an extremely high efficiency in counter attacks
the goals of Jan Gurri and Antonio Garcia Robledo and never ending will to win decided the match
Gurri’s ninth strike with the final whistle made the fans
Granollers will face Füchse Berlin in the battle for the trophy — as the first Spanish finalists in a second-tier European cup competition since BM Aragon in 2007
Göppingen will lock horns with Montpellier in the 3/4 placement match

lost both home matches in the knockout stage — and now made it to the final of the European League
“We are the underdogs in all matches in Flensburg,” said Granollers coach Rama Garcia on Friday
“We have nothing to lose here.” Exactly this relaxed attitude now propelled Granollers to the final against Berlin
they always fought back when they were down
their defence caused many problems for Göppingen
and in attack they counted on youngster Gurri and veteran Garcia Robledo
Granollers have made it to an international final — and when they made it that far
Göppingen simply caused too many mistakes in attack to make their final dream come true
Montpellier HB were ahead for almost 50 minutes
but finally Frisch Auf Göppingen celebrated with their fans in Flensburg: The four-time EHF Cup winners from Germany beat two-time Champions League winners Montpellier 33:29 to secure third place at the EHF Finals Men 2023
Goalkeeper Marin Sego had some great saves in the last 10 minutes
Jaka Malus scored the decisive goal for 32:28 after Kresimir Kozima paved the winners’ way with a key strike
and the defence block of Josip Sarac and Blaz Blagotinsek stood like a rock — the ‘Balkan boys’ and top scorer Marcel Schiller (six goals) were the keys to success for Göppingen
but were overrun in the final stages of the match

Göppingen’s power beats Montpellier’s elegance
The playing style of the two teams was quite different: Montpellier were more elegant
counting on the skills of playmaker Stas Skube and the Lenne brothers — Yanis and Arthur — and their high-speed attacks
while Göppingen counted on power and physical strength mainly from their ‘Balkan boys’ Sarac
The key factors neutralised each other after Montpellier’s flying start
when the batteries of both sides were draining
Göppingen could better rely on their rotation
though they had to replace team captain Tim Kneule and Sebastian Heymann after injuries in their semi defeat
Montpellier’s top scorers were Bos with seven strikes and Kyllian Villeminot with six
