In honor of Israel’s Independence Day
observed this year from the evening of April 14 through April 15
the Brandeis Library's Special Collections is delighted to announce the donation of the Caroline Goldbach Israeli Stamp Collection
The collection highlights how “ordinary” lives can reflect much broader historical narratives
who had fled Nazi Germany in December 1938
forming a material link among the dispersed siblings
The collection was donated to Special Collections by Caroline Goldbach's two daughters
The collection’s genesis story thus reflects the seismic shift in the 20th Century of the world’s Jewish population from its pre-war center in Europe to North America and Israel
and one example of a quotidian means by which ordinary citizens coped with these traumatic transformations
the collection’s commemorative stamps highlight specific historical moments
including previous Independence Days and the 1979 signing of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty
Stamps also highlight additional aspects of Israeli society
whose 1938 founders included a large number of recent immigrants from Germany
and home to Ilse Goldbach Chorin and her family. The Goldbach Collection beautifully complements another collection of framed Israeli stamps held by Special Collections
Brandeis Library has also been honored with the generous donation by Hannah Sivak of Arizona
of the 1903 edition of collected works of the Zionist illustrator E.M.Lilien (1874-1925)
with an introduction by renowned Austrian Jewish writer Stefan Zweig
Lilien’s plate commemorating the Fifth Zionist Congress in Basel (1901)

Running an entrepreneurial business demands the ability to listen and understand trends
collaborate with an interdisciplinary team
and manage diverse opportunities and challenges simultaneously
It requires staying connected to everything happening around you and always moving forward with intention and ease
This approach perfectly encapsulates the operating philosophy of the Goldbach Group
a holding company comprising eight businesses across various sectors
Romanian entrepreneurs with a combined experience of over two decades
share the role of CEO of Goldbach Group like riding a tandem bicycle
They both sat down with Business Review to tell the story behind the Goldbach Group’s success
This exclusive interview was featured as the main cover story of the February 2025 issue of Business Review Magazine:
What does it mean, from a business development perspective, to build a group of companies operating in such diverse sectors? What are the biggest challenges? What about the most significant professional rewards?
Florentin Avadanei (F.A.): We see the fact that we operate in a variety of fields as an opportunity
The biggest challenges I’ve encountered in my entrepreneurial journey are common to the business environment in Romania
especially in the early stages of business development
along with the instability of the legislative framework and lack of predictability
can represent significant issues for businesses
we continuously strengthened our ability to tackle these challenges and we focused on building teams with deeper expertise which are able to manage complex projects in dynamic environments
Our growth is largely due to our exceptional teams
What is the story behind the Goldbach Group
How did you manage to successfully integrate all the companies into this holding
F.A.: The Goldbach Group has experienced organic growth over the past 13 years
in step with the expansion of the markets we serve
Each company within the group represents a direct response to the increasing number of client projects and the opportunities we’ve identified across various sectors
the Goldbach Group team has evolved and specialised in line with our clients’ changing needs
it’s less about integrating companies and more about fostering unified development
we are deeply rooted in the local and regional business landscape
The Goldbach Group is our strategic answer to the demands of dynamic markets
where we see immense potential as industries embrace cutting-edge technology
Elena Oancea: The diversity of companies in the Group is perhaps our greatest strength
tackling interdisciplinary initiatives that bring together professionals with proven expertise from various fields
the Goldbach Group comprises more than 60 professionals who work together to creatively and technically solve any managerial or administrative challenge in the business sectors where we are present
we set a strategic objective to strengthen the Group’s business foundation while expanding into high-growth sectors such as interior design—spanning residential
and hospitality projects—and the development of retail parks across the country
We are committed to continue raising the benchmark for quality and performance across the Group
ensuring we consistently exceed client expectations
What can you tell us about the companies in the Group and their strategic development plans
E.O.: Our development strategy for the coming years involves strengthening each company’s market position and growing the business
together with Florentin and the ma-nagement teams of each company
we aim to grow on solid foundations and maintain the sustainable pace of development
which has already been established over the last decade
we contri-buted to the economic revitalisation of small and medium-sized cities in the country through the investments we made in various sectors: construction
F.A.: We estimate that the Group’s 2024 turnover will reach EUR 16 million
The main sources of growth last year were the civil and industrial construction
We aim to strengthen our operations in these business segments and expand into several others with great development potential in the future: the development of retail parks at the national level under the K2 brand
the construction of photovoltaic parks through Goldbach Energy
and the national and international expansion of our interior design division
What are some of the most important projects currently being carried out by companies in the Group
E.O.: We have big plans and inspiring projects at K2 Design Lab that will transform and innovate the interior design industry in Romania
the K2 Design Lab team completed 15 cutting-edge projects for our clients
Our ongoing talks with potential customers make us confident that we will have more projects and creatively transform more spaces in 2025
We will also continue to invest in local communities through K2 Retail Properties projects
dedicated to the development of a nationwide retail park network near small and medium-sized communities
and retailers need to keep up with these transformations
our aim is to reach a total area of 100,000 sqm for our network of retail parks under the K2 brand
At the moment we have 9 functional retail parks
one of which operates under the K2 brand in Rasnov
and 14 other parks are in various stages of development
how do you see the development potential of the retail
What do you think are the biggest risks of 2025
the construction and real estate markets remain stable and are supported by strong demand
especially in the industrial and commercial sectors
The uncertainty surrounding the international geopolitical and macroeconomic landscape—including ongoing conflicts
rising wages and taxes are expected to put pressure on companies’ profit margins
potentially influencing the market in 2025 and beyond
there is a significant level of resilience within the sector
driven by continued investments and adaptation to evolving trends
which positions it for sustained growth and opportunity in the coming years
What are your development plans for this year and beyond
of the need for resilience and adaptability
those qualities may need to be paired with sharp thinking and effective management
I remain confident in the positive trajectory of the economy and our ability to turn challenges into opportunities
extends well beyond the scope of a single year
our focus will be on strengthening the market position of each company within the group
While we remain open to new business opportunities
our approach is grounded in a clearly defined growth plan
already in motion thanks to the dedication of the entire team

The transition to an economy with radically lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is not a matter of if but of when and how
Discussions with executive teams about how they are navigating sustainability issues
too often remain framed around the question of “Should my business become more sustainable?” rather than “How should my business become more sustainable — and what advantages might that bring?”
these headlines are framed in a manner that suggests that progress toward a low-carbon economy is stalling — something that may be driven by the loss aversion bias
whereby people fear losses more than they value gains
predictable and known business models are the things that are “lost.” So it’s not surprising that humans demonstrate a preference for data that might support their ability to hang on to the status quo
Fixating on speed bumps and postponing the decision to act on a clear long-term trend is effectively choosing a wait-and-see or go-slow strategy — which is profoundly more risky than trying something new and capitalizing on the opportunity presented by the energy transition
A strategy grounded in inaction amounts to an implicit all-in bet on a future scenario where the transition to a low-carbon economy fails to materialize
But the reality is that there is strong momentum for the transition to a low-emissions world
as these five long-term sustainability drivers show
Steven Goldbach is the leader of Deloitte’s Sustainability practice in the U.S
Geoff Tuff is a sustainability and climate leader in Deloitte’s Global and U.S
Derek Pankratz is a senior research leader for sustainability and climate change at Deloitte

”The year 2024 for Goldbach was a year of consolidation and business crystallization
We started developing retail spaces since 2012
the end customer behavior and opportunities
That’s why we decided to develop our own portfolio of spaces
And last year we finalized the process of acquiring a portfolio of eight locations and developed the first project
and we will reach 18,000 square meters by summer
We have spaces in design and construction that will take us to 40,000 sqm by the end of 2026
Our advantage is that we have everything we need to develop projects in-house
this is where we will invest more in the coming years
we have investments of 36 million euros underway
Goldbach Holding is following the core business and we want to reach 100,000 sqm GLA in coming years
2024 was the year when we saw the first results from our spaces.”
we implement these requirements from the design phase
But that also brings us lower operating costs later on
We are however supportive of sustainability elements
not least because environmental impact is no longer a story
even if it still comes down to money and many give back
if funding will be favored or blocked if there are no ESG elements in projects
it is clear that everyone will implement them
Including tenants are demanding lower operating constants
we have more discounters in our portfolio.”
”We have started in December 2024 a process of ESG implementation in the company, we will have a sustainability strategy, and next year we will have the first report on this topic.”
we are looking optimistically at what has happened in the last couple of years
Even though the pandemic has forced us to do things differently
where people are increasingly coming back to the office
even in companies that have supported the idea of working from home

My morning routine is sacred to me: I don’t leave the house without doing my skincare and taking my supplements
my day can’t start properly without a hot drink at my desk
But where I used to make a beeline for the coffee machine as soon as I reached the office
now the kettle is my new best friend—because I’ve been drinking green tea instead of coffee for a month now
but I did typically consume two to three cups a day: one in the morning
but I had started to notice it made me feel a bit restless and shaky
I’d seen a story about how green tea could be an alternative to coffee
and when I finally got around to doing my own research
I discovered a comprehensive list of benefits that encouraged me to make the switch
an amino acid that has a calming effect and can increase concentration at the same time
L-theanine promotes a relaxed but alert mind—ideal for focused work
A cup of green tea generally contains less caffeine than a cup of coffee
green tea contains 20 to 50 mg of caffeine
whereas coffee contains 80 to 120 mg per cup
the caffeine in green tea is released much more slowly than in coffee
It therefore takes a little longer for the stimulating effect to kick in
longer-lasting energy boost—without a caffeine crash
it can cause stomach irritation or heartburn
Green tea is generally gentler on the stomach and less likely to cause digestive problems
green tea is not fermented and therefore contains natural antioxidants
which have an anti-inflammatory effect and support cell health while strengthening the immune system
Green tea also surpasses the antioxidant content of coffee
Some studies show that green tea has a positive effect on the heart. Evidence suggests that regular consumption could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, as the antioxidants present can reduce inflammation.
Green tea stimulates your metabolism and can increase energy expenditure. Studies suggest that the combination of caffeine and catechins in green tea may reduce the digestion and absorption of fat in the stomach and intestines.
Some people feel shaky or experience a racing heart after coffee. As the caffeine in green tea is released more slowly, these side effects are less common.
I actually quite like green tea (I know not everyone does), but in the initial days, I missed the more intense taste of coffee. But after about a week, I got used to my new hot drink alternative.
The first thing I noticed was that my energy levels somehow felt more balanced. Although I don’t get the boost my coffee used to give me in the morning, my afternoon slump is also much less pronounced. I have no problems falling asleep in the evening (I usually have my last cup of tea around 4 p.m.). When I had coffee late in the day, I sometimes found it difficult to drift off.
I’ve also noticed that I tolerate green tea better. My morning coffee has given me heartburn a few times, with green tea this doesn’t happen. I am also less shaky and can concentrate better throughout the day.
After a month, I can safely say that green tea has permanently replaced coffee in my daily routine. Overall, I feel more relaxed and less jittery. During the week, I simply stick to green tea in a bag, but when I have a little more time I like to have a matcha latte with soy milk. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not giving up coffee forever. It’s just that now it’s an occasional treat, rather than a daily crutch.

windowless metal sheds that line the river and the winding train tracks that connect them
thousands of Clevelanders drive past the steel mills down on the Cuyahoga
hulking testaments to our city’s heart and soul
But few of us ever get a glimpse inside these building where so much of Cleveland’s history was built — literally
the Cleveland native worked as a hot dipper and bander and forklift driver and other jobs at ArcelorMittal in the industrial Flats
Now a John Carroll University adjunct English professor
vividly shares her experiences in her new book
“Rust: A Memoir of Steel and Grit” (Flatiron Books)
This poetic and gritty account of living in
what others demean as the Rust Belt is garnering strong national attention
Goldbach will be flown to New York to discuss her debut book on “The Today Show” on Monday and has already taped NPR interviews for “Morning Edition” and “1A” slated to run this week
“I didn’t know what to expect with my first book,” says Goldbach
who has been an active part of the local writing community for years
“I wasn’t expecting anything as big as it has gotten.”
The memoir of a female steel worker — the story of any steel worker
really — is not the usual fodder of the literary establishment
“It’s definitely exotic to many,” says Goldbach
“It’s something people don’t expect; maybe it breaks the mold of the stereotypical industrial worker.”
“Rust” is an elegiac look at an overlooked segment of our country: the working women and men who put on their hardhats every day and risk their lives and health doing heavy labor
In one of the book’s most revealing moments
and is grilled by two smug young lawyers about living in Cleveland
“Despite my deep insecurities about the mill
I was developing a complicated love for it,” she adds
“I felt a fierce protectiveness for its people
and there was a part of me that actually preferred the life of a steel worker to that of an academic
… We were a people of grit and substance.”

Working in industry was an unlikely career path for Goldbach
“I wasn’t supposed to be a steel worker,” she writes near the beginning of “Rust.”
“I never expected her to go into steel but was thrilled when she got the job
because it had been so hard for her to make ends meet,” says her mother
“One thing I had found out about her when she was in high school was that she loved physical work
and she would go to the barn and move hay bales all day
she enrolled in Franciscan University in Steubenville
where she thought she would meet other likeminded pious young women
The sheltered young woman also found a brutal awakening to the harsher realities of the world
She was violently raped one night by two men she thought were her friends
Goldbach recounts that experience in “Rust,” and the toll it took on her
“It made me realize the world was more complex than I thought it was,” says the author
Goldbach also explores her struggles with mental illness
and politics in the form of the 2016 Republican National Convention in “Rust.”
She didn’t start her book with the intention of weaving all of these threads into her steel narrative
“[Before ‘Rust’] I had been writing about my sexual assault and childhood and religion
and the way religion combined with politics
and it seemed important to include,” she says
“I had always wanted to do a memoir about losing faith and finding it again
and it just kind of merged into this book.”
“Any time you are honest about what you have gone through
Goldbach didn’t first don her orange hat and walk into the mill intending to write anything
she enrolled at John Carroll University and earned a bachelor’s degree in English
She went on to earn a master of fine arts degree at Cleveland State University
Spiraling depression caused her to keep putting it off
and Goldbach started a house-painting business
When a friend mentioned how lucrative a job at ArcelorMittal could be
the struggling 20-something applied and finally got the job after a grueling application process
“It’s kind of stepping back in time when you go down there,” she says
“I didn’t know how many people still worked there
I grew up with the steel mill in the background
Surprises included the danger that she and her colleagues faced every day
as well as the sense of community she found on the mill floor
“I didn’t imagine the camaraderie between everyone
or how working in the mill becomes a type of identity and people become like family,” she says
and you are just trying to protect yourself and other people
You can’t imagine that until you experience it.”
“It’s amazing when I think about her life what she has already done,” says her father
and I never realized what it entailed to work in a steel mill until Eliese told us.”
Plain Dealer Historical Photograph Collection: Republic Steel
Working among a variety of young and old men and women at the mill also gave Goldbach a new perspective on working-class politics
especially with the RNC and the election of President Donald Trump as a backdrop
“The election was very much in my mind all the time
since everyone was looking to the Rust Belt
and I had this unique perspective as a liberal woman in a steel mill,” she says
Goldbach portrays the opinions of her co-workers as more nuanced and thoughtful than outsiders might think
trying to understand all of them despite their differences
She didn’t walk into ArcelorMittal with the intention of writing about her experiences there
“I was looking for a paycheck and insurance
I knew this was nonfiction gold,” she explains
There was so much to describe — the people
“I write about my life as a way to give me a sense of purpose and meaning
Being able to write about the steel mill after a shift gave it meaning.”
Goldbach’s graduate school adviser and friend David Giffels
himself the author of several books about living in Northeast Ohio
because our stories don’t get told from the inside enough in this part of the country
but his book humanizes one part of who we are
She is writing about the underrepresented among us
a moving and really sensitive portrait of who we are.”
Goldbach finally felt able to move on from the mill and get her diploma
“It was a really tough decision,” she explains
“But it felt like everything in my life was pushing me to the next thing
… the mill gave me a certain level of confidence in my life to move forward.”
Her book deal came about almost by accident
A magazine essay she wrote included a brief bio that mentioned being a steel worker in the Rust Belt
A literary agent saw this and got in touch with her to pitch the idea of a book
“She thought there would be a lot of interest in a woman writing a book about being a steel worker in the Rust Belt.”

Jeff Goldbach wasn’t built like Mark McGwire
But his prodigious home runs that rocketed far over the 320-foot left-field fence at Gil Hodges Field in Princeton was the stuff of legend
“One of the home owners was a little feisty,” said Goldbach
whose massive power belied his a relatively modest 6-foot
He became such a feared hitter at Princeton Community High School in the mid-to-late 1990s that opposing teams intentionally walked him by the time he was an upperclassman
As a result, professional scouts were instructed to get to “the Gil” early
to watch him Goldbach's batting practice barrage
An Atlanta Braves scout came to watch Goldbach work out one Saturday morning and one of his blasts sailed through the feisty woman’s window -- she was not a happy camper
Goldbach’s baseball coach at Princeton
“It wasn’t just one house,” Nonte said
He hit one halfway up the pine tree.”
Nonte said the Wildcats outfielders didn’t even bother to move from their position to see where it landed
“We had an assistant coach go out there after the game and measure it and I think it was 480 feet,” Nonte said
Princeton athletics director Jason Engelbrecht
was starring for the University of Southern Indiana when Goldbach was becoming a high school legend at Princeton
“I’m not sure how familiar the current student-athletes are with Jeff’s exploits,” Engelbrecht said
I was playing baseball at USI at that time and remember his prolific numbers
It was hard not to notice the type of publicity he was generating
especially early on in his high school career
I remember him not being pitched to.”
Engelbrecht recalled conversations with Nonte about Goldbach
“He was certainly quite the talent,” Engelbrecht said
“You go from being an elite player to being on a field full of elite players," said Goldbach
suddenly facing guys who could crank it up to 95 mph with breaking stuff that drops off the table
he never hit well through the minors," Nonte said
Goldbach feels bad for cities that may not have minor league baseball this summer
from Class A to Triple-A,” Goldbach said
Currently a business partner for a high-tech company in Greensboro
14, to Greensboro Grasshoppers games (the Grasshoppers are the Pittsburgh Pirates' affiliate in the Class A South Atlantic League)
Small cities love their minor league teams because in the pre-COVID-19 world
Goldbach said Evansville Otters owner Bill Bussing did not want his players to leave Bosse Field until every autograph had been signed for every youngster
remembered a game between Goldbach's Lansing Lugnuts and his Michigan Battle Cats (of Battle Creek) in the Class A Midwest League in 1999
Goldbach belted two home runs - one over the scoreboard - in the first game of a doubleheader
But he found time to sign an autograph for Johnston's cousin between games
"I remember it was a really good stadium," said Goldbach
who caught and played first base and left field
Goldbach set a then-franchise record of 19 home runs in just 52 games for the Otters after coming over from the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League in mid-season in 2005
He also had 64 runs batted in while hitting .339
"I had a lot of friends and family who had never seen me play professionally," Goldbach said
It was nice to sleep in my own bed and see familiar faces in the crowd."
He said it wasn't really a case of getting hot
It was a matter of facing pitching who weren't as talented as he had faced in affiliated ball
he was the Mark McGwire of the Frontier League
"The competition wasn't quite as stiff," Goldbach said
Goldbach hit 17 home runs and drove in 69 runs and batted .306
the Otters made the Frontier League playoffs by finishing second in the Western Division
getting hot at the right time and winning the franchise’s first Frontier League title.
"Jeff practically carried the team to the Frontier League championship down the stretch in 2006," Bussing said
There is no way we would have won without him."
Goldbach still ranks fifth on the Otters' all-time home run list with 36. He ranks fourth on the single-season list with his 19 homers in 2005
Nonte hadn't forgotten Goldbach through the years
taking his grandsons to watch him play for the Otters in 2005 and '06
Although Greg Jelks guided Evansville to the Frontier League title
Goldbach was stunned to hear about Jelks' death on a return flight to the U.S
Goldbach had nothing but praise for Bussing
who preserved professional baseball in Evansville
He loved Bussing's down to earth work ethic
doing everything he could to make coming to Bosse Field the best possible experience
He would do the same thing an intern would do."
Some young players may not be aware of the significance of Princeton's field being named after Hodges
who played first for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers and steered the "Amazin' Mets" to the 1969 World Series championship. Goldbach
"I think everyone had heard of him from my generation," Goldbach said
Tim Nonte did a great job of keeping the field up."
Goldbach isn't sure what is in store for professional baseball this summer.
"We've had baseball through two world wars," Goldbach said

It will be the first NIH-funded intervention study to address making schools safer for LGBTQ+ youth through policy change and universal education
using a randomized controlled trial at 24 schools
The study’s goal is to test the efficacy of a theoretically informed
school-based intervention for sexual- and gender-minority adolescents
was started by Goldbach in 2010 to help such adolescents cope with discrimination and stigma
Twelve schools in the study will use the intervention and 12 will not

self-harm and post-traumatic stress disorder
violence and victimization — all of which places them at higher risk of mental health concerns,” Goldbach said

We hope their input makes P&E relevant to the lives of young people today,” he said
The P&E program is available to schools at no cost upon request
and it consists of 10 sessions that run 30-45 minutes each
There are training modules to assist adolescents and supportive adults in administering the program

Grandma…” “…Or stupid!” she quipped back with a twinkle in her eye
and her constant concern for all the employees will be deeply missed
Even in her final days she regularly asked
“How are the employees?” She was a lover of art
classical music and Maltese dogs (Tashi and Amicus)
and also had an appreciation for the smallest details in life
regularly admiring the intricate beauty in flowers
and looking with wonder at the birds in her backyard
she was often putting another log in her fireplace…it seemed she could never be too warm
But Sundays—her favorite day of the week—were for Mass in the morning and Sam’s Pizza at night
She’s probably already The angels have gloriously welcomed their dear friend Marie Goldbach into heaven
daughter of the late August and Elizabeth (Kaufmann) Seubert
Marie and Ray were lifelong residents of Marathon City
They founded Marathon Cheese Corporation together in 1952 in Marie’s parents’ basement
Marathon Cheese is credited with pioneering many cheese marketing and packaging innovations that transformed the way cheese was sold throughout the United States
innovations that are seen on grocery store shelves around the country to this day
consistent and calming force that was integral to the company’s success
Marathon Cheese has four manufacturing facilities in three states and employs thousands of people
a company that distributes various packaging supplies and equipment through several locations across the U.S
Since her husband Ray’s death 23-years ago
Marie has guided Marathon Cheese and Rocket Industrial to even greater heights
“Don’t judge someone until you’ve walked in their shoes,” and
“What are the facts?” were phrases she could often be heard saying
Marie and Ray received the “Person of the Year” award in 1985
presented by the Marathon City Business Association
to honor their outstanding civic and business leadership
They built the Marathon Swim Center as a means of giving back to the community
They also instituted college scholarship programs at multiple high schools in addition to a scholarship program for the children of Marathon Cheese Corporation and Rocket Industrial employees
Their foundation supports a multitude of philanthropic efforts locally and nationally
Marie was presented with the Founders’ Award by Archbishop Jerome Listecki
who served as Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse at the time
Archbishop Listecki praised Marie for “her devotion to the Eucharist
her sense of love for Christ and His church.” Marie continued to drive to daily Mass and to her weekly hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until the age of 96
Those closest to Marie will remember her most for her glowing smile
In her humble way she could regularly be heard responding
“Jesus is listening!” after receiving a compliment
“You’ve got to be pretty enjoying a medium “pepperoni
sausage and onion” in heaven with Ray and their friends
for whom she had unconditional love for: Elizabeth (Betsy) Goldbach and Mary Goldbach Gallagher (Richard Keskey
Ryan (Mary Tokarz) Gallagher; and two great-grandsons: Jude Raymond and John “Jack” Liam Gallagher
Also surviving are two sisters: Angela Kannenberg and Judith Stroik both of Chandler
Nancy and John Skoug; and many nieces and nephews – she had tremendous compassion and love for all of her nieces and nephews
Marie was also preceded in death by four sisters: Lorraine Seubert
Rita Menzner and Elizabeth Buchberger; and one brother
Many members of Marie’s family were instrumental in helping Marathon Cheese succeed
especially her dear sisters—one even moved to Booneville
to start a production facility in the 1960s; Marie’s niece oversees that facility today

Instead of escaping her Rust Belt youth as hoped after college
Eliese Goldbach finds herself applying to work in a local steel mill in an effort to gain financial stability
the Ohio-born writer reflects on her childhood in the industrial valley and her three years as a steelworker
She tells NPR she eventually used the money she earned to become a teacher
we were really given clear guidelines about all the things that could harm us
it's noxious gases that can just knock you out
it's just this huge equipment that is so powerful and it can just rip apart your body
where you're dealing with metals and where you have to have all sorts of protective equipment to make sure that you don't get burned and don't get hurt
There are cranes always rumbling of overhead and they're carrying
So you just always have to be to be looking out for yourself and looking out for the people around you
molten zinc that was used to galvanize the steel
long thing that looks like a garden hoe kind of
This the heat emanating from the zinc is making you sweat and you have all these clothes on to protect you from the heat
hard to control as you're kind of balancing on this walkway
On her evolving thoughts about her coworkers
I think one of the things that really changed was I realized how important being a steel worker is to people's identity
and how much stock — and how much people kind of love the mill
it becomes this place that you spend so much time down there
what really changed was I realized how many people were just very similar to myself and also how varied the steel mill can be
There are a lot of different people with different backgrounds
a lot of people with college degrees who find that you can make more money in a steel mill than doing what they had studied in school
And a lot of people with liberal views like my own
this idea that being an industrial worker isn't just one thing
