A Slaton pilot got out of a helicopter crash Tuesday afternoon with no injuries
John Gonzalez of the Texas Department of Public Safety
was attempting to land the aircraft when he lost control and the helicopter wound up on its side
The propellers burst into flames after impact
Guetersloh was the only person on board and did not seek medical treatment
He told the Avalanche-Journal he has been flying since he was 18 years old
He has logged close to 7,000 hours piloting helicopters and fixed-wing planes
He owns the helicopter and had just returned from Plains
declined comment on the crash because of the ongoing Federal Aviation Administration investigation
FAA officers were on site Tuesday afternoon
said the helicopter crash was the second one in the facility's history
DeLano has worked at the airport for 12 years
a Highway Patrol helicopter doing emergency landing practice crashed at the airport
A third crash at the airport involved an airplane and resulted in one fatality
Weather was clear with no obstruction and very little wind at the time of the crash Tuesday
He witnessed the crash from inside the airport office
Although he is accustomed to hearing the sounds of planes and helicopters
You don't pay much attention until it's something different."
DeLano estimated the whole helicopter was on fire about 10 seconds after the crash
"The door may have been popped open on impact," he said
"He had to get his seat belt off and jump out
and that's a very fast reaction time for anybody."
The first step after the crash was to make sure Guetersloh and the construction workers were out of the way of any danger
The area of the airport is undergoing construction to redo the ramp
Airport officials called for emergency responders and temporarily shut down the airport
Air pumps were secured to avoid fire damage
DeLano said the officers also would interview witnesses and then file a procedure report and haul off the remains of the helicopter
(a pilot who is involved in a crash is not fined)
unless they're doing something blatantly dangerous," DeLano said

Editor’s note: In wildfires across the state
volunteer ground crews have been the backbone of firefighting forces
The courage of those volunteer firefighters will be recognized as part of a Texas Co-op Power story coming in January
aerial firefighter Marc Mullis abruptly ends a telephone interview mid-sentence
after dropping fire retardant around wildfires near Junction
a weary Mullis sends this hastily typed e-mail from the Gillespie County Airport’s Hangar Hotel: “Sorry I had to cut you off but the fire turned into seven fires and I got very busy saw several homes burn down this afternoon but I know I saved one.”
full-time firefighter who makes pinpoint-accurate fire retardant drops—and who developed some of his skills years ago as an agricultural aviation pilot
His job is to help contain fires and support ground crews in the trenches
And just like the members of a support system in place across Texas
he’ll never stop scrapping—even though since last fall
it’s been a grossly unfair fight: More than 3,000 ground and aerial firefighters
many coming to Texas’ rescue from around the nation
have been desperately outnumbered by blazes in the worst wildfire season in state history
firefighters have responded to almost 24,000 fires burning close to 4 million acres and destroying almost 2,800 homes since mid-November 2010
have finally dropped from record-setting triple-digit heat
But as firefighters continue to battle the horrific blazes sweeping our drought-stricken state
they grimly point to a frightening fact: With a lack of rain
dry grass and trees—for fires to feed upon
There’s no telling when this nightmare will end
Aerial firefighter David Guetersloh (pronounced GOO-ter-sloh)
who owns an aerial application business in Plains
west of Lubbock near the New Mexico border
also learned to fly in ag aviation airplanes
When asked if he’s ever seen such dry conditions
What’s really scary is that any number of potential culprits—barbecue pits
cigarettes flicked out of car windows into ditches
overheated wheel bearings on fast-moving vehicles
has 34,000-plus hours of flight time and thousands of missions flown as an aerial firefighter
He doesn’t flinch at the sight of flames beneath his wings
he flew missions for more than a week on the state’s largest-ever wildfire: the Rock House Fire that scorched more than 314,000 acres in far West Texas
But nothing prepared him emotionally for this year of hell
watching houses burn,” Mullis said in early September
the high winds of a tropical storm produced new wildfires in Central Texas—most notably the 34,000-acre-plus Bastrop County Complex fire—but scant moisture
the brighter the everyday heroes shine: the boots-on-the-ground volunteer
municipal and Texas Forest Service firefighters who build containment lines with bulldozers
The aerial firefighters who drop fire retardant and water from helicopters and airplanes
including one of the biggest birds of all: a DC-10 air tanker
requested by the Texas Forest Service and used to drop retardant on blazes in the Huntsville area
And waiting in the wings is an equally important
yet less visible group of firefighters: single-engine air tanker pilots like Mullis and Guetersloh
whose decision-making and low-altitude flying skills honed during ag aviation careers make them ideally suited for fighting fires
these pilots say: They’re proud of their ag aviation backgrounds
All those years spent flying low over crops
navigating sudden gusts of wind and taking off with heavy loads prepared them for firefighting careers
mistakenly think they’re ag pilots pulled off field duty to spray a little water on fires
Some ag pilots around the state are on standby to help fight local wildfires—their efforts are invaluable
who ran his family’s southeast Arkansas aerial application business for 28 years
and his comrades are professional aerial firefighters
And so are their planes: AT-802s made by Olney-based Air Tractor
These planes—single-engine air tankers called SEATs—aren’t designed to treat crops
with hoppers holding up to 8,000 pounds of fire retardant
SEATs pack an effective punch as they swoop in for the initial attack
Flying in formation as low as 60 feet above ground
red-dyed fire retardant in front of flames
The pilots build a long buffer line that slows and cools the fire
buying time for the firefighters below to dig in on the perimeter
When ground crews see the red and white planes with the word FIRE painted on the tails and red plumes of fire retardant dropping from the aircrafts’ bellies
six are owned by Texas-based aerial application operations: M&M Air Service of Beaumont has four
which focuses primarily on fighting wildfires
Guetersloh is one of six aerial firefighters
Both operations have used Fredericksburg as a temporary base this year
and M&M Air Service’s firefighters have been stationed in Fort Stockton to be near far West Texas blazes
which means a runway and mobile fuel and retardant trucks
the SEATs are equipped to land on paved or dirt roads for reloading
They do not take off until they have received an aircraft dispatch form from Texas Forest Service headquarters in Merkel
containing all pertinent information about a fire
they obey orders from an air tactical group supervisor—called the air attack—who soars about 1,000 feet above them
The air attack monitors fire and aerial activity while his pilot keeps their twin-engine plane—called the air attack platform—circling like a hawk above the blaze
SEAT pilots must be ready to quickly shift direction
with aerial firefighters tackling hot spots across the region
Mullis was directed to take off alone for the Junction area
Air attack orders changed as he neared his target: Instead of dropping retardant in front of a fire
he was instructed to immediately head for a house that was in flames
“I dropped in their front door,” Mullis sums up
There’s nothing flippant about Mullis’ remark
If there’s a chance of preventing a home’s destruction
SEAT pilots don’t hesitate: They’re dropping in
Such was the case at the first Possum Kingdom fire this year in April (unthinkably
the area went up in flames again in August)
Guetersloh and other aerial firefighters dropped retardant on houses already in flames to prevent nearby houses from catching fire
Many people ask: Will the red retardant permanently stain structures
The manufacturer’s answer is that in most cases
it should wash off with water or scrubbing or power washing (see the Fire Retardant sidebar)
Guetersloh says: “It’s easier to repaint it than to rebuild it.”
fellow M&M Air Service firefighter Bill Rose
truck driver Ted Freeman and SEAT Manager Don Moline were eating dinner at a Fredericksburg restaurant
appreciative strangers from out of state were paying for the group’s meal
The firefighters recalled the event on Friday morning
at Fredericksburg’s Hangar Hotel where they’d been staying the past several days
Guetersloh wasn’t at the restaurant that night
slowly placing his right hand over his heart
and the men go back to arguably the hardest part of their jobs: waiting for the call to fly
talking on their cellphones and monitoring wildfire activity on a laptop computer
Air Attack Commander Dick Stiliha of California bursts into the large room
you guys might want to get your britches on,” he says
referring to their flame-retardant coveralls
pulling on coveralls and checking their belongings
They might not be coming back to this airport—hence the small travel bags and the larger ones they keep onboard packed with a week’s worth of clothes
“This is an in-between bag,” Rose says of his carry-on
“You try to stay organized as much as you can.”
and Mullis’ T-shirt bears his tail tanker number
with this sentiment: “SHE’S SO FINE SHE’S ALL MINE.”
and within five minutes of receiving the takeoff order
Mike Hanneman—take off for a wildfire east of Johnson City
and over a subdivision flanked by ranch land
circle overhead in a white and blue Aero Commander
the SEAT pilots lay down the retardant line
each making four trips back to Fredericksburg for reloading
two donkeys and a few cattle rest in the shade under a live oak tree
there’s little fanfare afterward over the firefighters’ efforts
we’re the only ones who see it,” Mullis says
Mullis continues: “We did an excellent job

BLOOMINGTON — Illinois may have the Windy City
When the Twin Groves Wind Farm east of Bloomington started production in March 2007
it marked the start of a new industry in Central Illinois
proposed projects could increase the number of wind turbines planted among area corn and soybean fields from 705 to more than 2,772 in five years
according to data from Illinois State University’s Center for Renewable Energy
said the fourfold increase for the six-county area is not surprising
“This area is a sweet spot for wind farms,” Loomis said
“This area is the intersection of good wind resources and high-voltage transmission lines.”
Among the latest projects is one by Spanish company
which won approval for its 165-turbine Streator Deer Run wind farm in Livingston County last month
Houston-based Horizon Wind Energy will be seeking approval Oct
19 from the McLean County Board for its 223-turbine Bright Stalk project
Wind farms spur economic development with construction jobs and business expansions
and provide stable tax revenue in the midst of a recession and an ailing state economy
But there are others who worry about the turbines’ effect on property values and their disruption of the serene rural landscape
Ridgeview Superintendent Larry Dodds said the additional tax money generated from the turbines has helped his rural Colfax-based district balance its $8 million budget without making dramatic cuts
“I wish I could add Miracle-Gro out there to help make the turbines grow faster,” he said
Tax revenue from the nearby Twin Groves Wind Farm pumped more than $1.2 million into his district’s budget
The extra money also has helped the school district stay afloat while waiting for the financially ailing state to make its promised payments to schools
But chief among the concerns for Pontiac attorney Carolyn Gerwin is the effect of wind farms on surrounding properties
who represented property owners in the Deer Run project area
presented reports from an appraiser who claimed that property values decrease by 25 percent in an area where a wind farm is located
“There are people who say they can’t sell their house because they are in a wind farm area,” Gerwin said
“That is data that is never entered into these property value studies because those studies are routinely are based on actual home sales up to 10 miles away from the project area.”
Loomis estimated Illinois’ 21 operating wind farms have added about $8.3 million to the checkbooks of the farmers who rent their land for the turbines
Loomis said construction of those projects added nearly 10,000 construction jobs and $509 million in payroll to the state
and created new opportunities for local businesses who can supply parts for the turbines
it is that most of the energy is produced in Central Illinois is purchased by energy companies including ComEd
Ameren and the Tennessee Valley Authority and used elsewhere
A pair of transmission lines owned by power giants ComEd and Ameren run through the region
giving the wind farm companies easy access to the power grid
“It’s an easy place to get wind; it’s an easy way to transfer the energy and we have a huge customer base,” Park said
There are nearly two dozen commercial-scale wind farms in Illinois
continues testing and land signup for a proposed 200-turbine wind farm on the west side of the county
Developers have not yet applied for zoning approval
has proposed a major wind farm in Christian County and two others in DeWitt County
Number of turbines and construction date to be determined
extending into McLean County; turbines and construction to be determined
extending into Logan County; turbines and construction to be determined

Research at meat plant in Gütersloh finds air system contributed to spread of coronavirus
Air cooling systems used at abattoirs could be an overlooked risk factor accounting for Covid-19 outbreaks, according to scientists who have studied conditions at a meat-processing plant at the heart of a cluster of infections in Germany.
Martin Exner, a hygiene and public health expert at the University of Bonn, spent two days analysing the Tönnies plant in Gütersloh, a western German city sent back into lockdown this week after around 1,500 employees were infected with coronavirus.
At a press conference, Exner said the air filtration system in the slaughter area had contributed to the spread of aerosol droplets laden with the virus, describing it as a “newly recognised risk factor”.
The area of the plant where animals are slaughtered, gutted and cut to pieces is kept at a cool 6-10C degrees. To do this, the cooling system circulated the same unfiltered air, thus keeping aerosols in motion, Exner said. A filter fitted to the cooling system was not able to keep out the virus, his analysis found.
Read moreThe findings would have “big consequences” for other abattoirs as well
Slaughterhouses have also been at the heart of Covid-19 outbreaks in America
Around 640,000 people in two neighbouring districts have also been affected by newly enforced “soft lockdown” measures. Schools and nurseries have closed down and bars, cinemas and fitness studios have had to shut their doors. Around 7,000 employees at the abattoir have been asked to self-quarantine.
A “contact ban” allowing only meetings of two people from different households has been been re-established, while locals are advised to stay at home at the start of the summer holidays, which start in the region on Monday.
Three northern German states, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, have said tourists from the affected districts will not be allowed to holiday in their regions, with hotels and holiday home providers instructed to cancel bookings if necessary.
Austria, meanwhile, has issued a ban on non-essential travel to and from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Armin Laschet, the premier of Germany’s most populous state, has warned against vilifying people from the region affected by the second lockdown. “One thing simply won’t do and that is the stigmatisation of people from Gütersloh,” said Laschet, who is one of the three official candidates vying for the leadership of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union.

The park was selected as it is in the vicinity of both Mansergh Barracks and the Englische Siedlung MQ Patch
and is considered a likely location to which current and former pupils and staff may return to visit in years to come
Alongside the tree sits a special plaque
Bielefeld, that records Haig School’s donation; ‘Donated by Haig School following closure
Ben Turner closed the ceremony with a final thought
‘It is an honour and a privilege to be able to leave something behind to a town that has given us so many memories and so much friendship – Danke!’

There has been a rare chance for people in Germany to go behind the wire of a former RAF and British Army base in Gütersloh
The British handed the site to the German authorities in 2016 but it remained a restricted area until June last year when local people were allowed in for the first time after 80 years
Since then the base has become a popular attraction according to those now running the site
"I was born in Gütersloh and I've always seen it from the outside but I never knew what was here inside and it's now very interesting for me to see this place," one local told Forces News
said: "Once the phone lines open group bookings sell out within 30 minutes – visits are always on a Saturday and individual tickets are usually gone in four hours
"At first it was a huge surprise for those of us involved
We had a feeling there would be interest but weren’t sure."
The base started life as a Luftwaffe base in the 1930s
A huge ground-level compass contraption which pilots would have used to set their own compasses remains - believed to be one of the only two surviving examples
There is also an airfield museum with aircraft that once flew from Gütersloh on display
the museum is still looking for a permanent site with chosen exhibits currently being stored in the former base’s Hangar Six
A Hawker Hunter is now parked in the very same spot it occupied in the 1960s
Hannu Peters from Gütersloh Airfield Museum said: "We got a lot of help of the British community
"It's a bit like doing a Sherlock Holmes thing to find it!"
From our archives: RAF Gütersloh closes down (6 April 1993)
All the aircraft are in need of a refurbishment
including the RAF's first single-engine jet fighter – the Vampire
The only plane on display not to have flown from here is a Soviet-era Sukhoi 22 fast jet
where the museum will move to is undecided but base coach tours are likely to continue on the base
The last Royal Artillery unit in Germany has said goodbye to its host town of Gütersloh
the army has no gunner regiments based overseas
People in the area have become used to 26 Regiment's presence
26 Regiment Royal Artillery has spent 41 years in Germany
It is longest the gunners have been stationed anywhere
Three decades featured 16 military operations
That service has earned 26 Regiment a top German military award - the Fahnenband or ceremonial ribbon is one of the country’s most prestigious honours
said: "This day’s incredibly special for me personally and particularly 26 Regiment
"There’s a positive to this in that we look forward to going back to a brand new barracks and a new role as a divisional fires regiment but it’s a sad ending to an era in Germany."
26 Regiment moves to Larkhill in Wiltshire this summer
where it will switch from big artillery guns to firing rockets
but only for short visits to exercise on training areas

Der Trainer will erst gar keinen Druck aufkommen lassen
