There are also multiple layers of responsive cushioning

Calvin de Haan didn’t hide his frustration
The Rangers have made the veteran defenseman a healthy scratch for the past 18 games
adding that it’s “f—ed” how the Rangers have treated him
New York acquired de Haan in the package it received for Ryan Lindgren
Coach Peter Laviolette played him his first three games with the team and has made him a healthy scratch since
initially said he would speak to reporters after practice and be “very transparent.” He had a conversation with a Rangers public relations staffer when leaving the ice
then told reporters he would prefer to wait until after the season
He stressed it was his decision — not the public relations staff’s — to not go into more detail Sunday
“I said what I said because I am frustrated, and any competitor who says that they would be happy in this position would be lying to you,” de Haan later tweeted Sunday afternoon
“After playing (three) games for the team and going 2-0-1
I thought I maybe would have got an opportunity to jump into the lineup and help win some games
But we still won and collected some crucial points to climb the standings
I understand the youth movement in the NHL
and I’m getting older in hockey years and I may not play every single night
I feel like I can still contribute and help teams win
I know I’m not going to play 20 minutes a night in the role I’ve been in the past few years
I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game
“I’m not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
I would have preferred a scrum setting to chat about how my time with the Rangers has gone
As a player you have to respect the lineup decisions whether you like them or not
it’s just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do
With the Rangers eliminated from playoff contention less than a year after winning the Presidents’ Trophy
Laviolette knows change could be coming — potentially involving him
“I think everything gets looked at when a year is not good like this,” he said
I love being here with these guys and the New York Rangers
It’s a year where everything went right to a year where things didn’t go right
The Rangers set a record for wins and points in 2023-24
and though the Rangers’ season stabilized a bit when the calendar flipped to 2025 (21-17-6 record since Jan
especially with its power-play and defensive structure
Laviolette said there will be time to discuss specific elements of the Rangers’ season that went wrong but didn’t say much else Sunday
other than that the team needed to be more consistent
He also made clear he wants to remain with the Rangers
Everybody I just mentioned is faced with disappointment today
There’s always things that are looked at.”
Braden Schneider is out for the final two games of the season with an upper-body injury
He was dealing with the injury during the season
but will sit out now that the Rangers are officially eliminated
The 23-year-old is expected to be ready for the start of next season
Schneider will finish 2024-25 with 80 games played
His scoring numbers are all slightly above his previous career highs
nearly two minutes more than he has ever averaged in a season
the Rangers recalled Matthew Robertson from AHL Hartford
has been recalled multiple times in his career but has yet to appear in a game
Laviolette said he will debut Monday against the Florida Panthers
“My excitement level is super high,” Robertson said
“It feels like it’s been a long time coming
It seems like I’ve been close a couple times.”
Robertson found out he’d be in the lineup shortly before taking the ice in Fort Lauderdale
Young players will likely see increased ice time with the Rangers eliminated
Laviolette said Gabe Perreault and Brennan Othmann will both see action before the season is over
though he did not specify if they will play Monday in Florida
Will Cuylle scored his 20th goal of the season Saturday in Raleigh and would be a logical candidate for Team Canada’s World Championships roster
He has yet to hear from team executives on the possibility
I haven’t really thought about it too much,” Cuylle said
“It’s good to play hockey and get better and meet new people

TARRYTOWN - Calvin de Haan wanted a chance to clarify his viral comments from Sunday
when he used an expletive while describing his frustration with the way the Rangers have treated him during a string of 18 (and now 19) straight healthy scratches
The 33-year-old defenseman told reporters he would elaborate after practice that day in Florida
then reportedly decided against it following a conversation with one of New York's public relations staffers
But after seeing his pre-practice exchange spread like wildfire on social media
de Haan tweeted a statement and sought to further address the situation following Wednesday's practice at the MSG Training Center
"I was just going out on the ice and thought it was more of a small talk conversation with the reporters," he said
"Maybe I should have chosen my words a little better
Team MVP: Ranking every Ranger amid disappointing 2024-25 season
After letting the emotions simmer down for a few days
de Haan spoke at length and chalked up his discontentment to the lack of ice time
I just wanted a chance to compete," he said
"I understand I'm not a top-four (defenseman) or $10 million guy anymore in this league
I might not have a huge impact on the games
but I still want to play and be out there and go to war with the guys
Ontario native did eventually point to another factor that led to what he described as "a boiling point."
"I wasn't with my family for all of March," he said
so I miss important parent time (and) important time with my wife
but de Haan was asked if anything else during his brief Rangers' tenure
has rubbed him the wrong way or led to complaints about his handling
"It's not groundbreaking information," he said
any competitor that's been in my position for the past 20 games is going to want to play at some point
You want to continue to do it as long as possible."
De Haan recognizes that those opportunities are fleeting at this stage of his career
which may have added motivation to control the damage − or
"I called (Rangers team president) Chris Drury right after I saw everything online and tried to do their honorable thing
I didn't mean to belittle anyone or drag the organization through the mud,’" he said
"I think it got really blown out of proportion
it's on the NHL Network and stuff last night
As for communication with head coach Peter Laviolette and whether the reasons for scratching de Haan have been properly explained
I think that's more of a question for Lavi." But the 6-foot-1
"That's sometimes more important than actually talking about hockey and not getting in the lineup."
It's just the decisions that they've made that I don't necessarily agree with at times."
De Haan noted in Sunday's tweet that the Rangers went 2-0-1 in the three games he did play
look awfully good given New York's defensive woes all season
The playoff-less season will wrap up with Thursday's 7 p.m
finale at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning before heading into a long summer
with the unrestricted free agent hoping for another chance to prove himself if any teams come calling
and I've been one-year deals the past few years
It's been a little frustrating not being able to have someone trust me with a multi-year deal or anything
but I'm still gonna work and try to earn my contracts

whom the New York Rangers acquired from the Colorado Avalanche via trade earlier this season
has been scratched for the last 18 games and doesn't seem thrilled about it
I know I'm not going to play 20 minutes a night in the role I've been in the past few years
but again I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game."
"I'm not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
it's just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do."
The trade in full saw New York land de Haan
a 2025 conditional second-round pick and a 2025 conditional fourth-round pick for Ryan Lindgren
Jimmy Vesey and the rights to unsigned draft pick Hank Kempf
It seemed like de Haan would provide usable depth to the blue line for New York considering he played 44 games for the Avalanche this season prior to the deal
The journeyman also previously played for the New York Islanders
Hurricanes again and Tampa Bay Lightning before the Avalanche signed him to a one-year deal before the 2024-25 campaign
New York is just 20th in the league in goals allowed per game (3.15)
so it's not as if it has been dominant on defense and couldn't work de Haan into the lineup
It has also been eliminated from playoff contention so wouldn't be interrupting a dominant group with some lineup changes
It is clear de Haan is frustrated with the situation
and it is a pretty straightforward assumption that he won't be re-signing with the Rangers in free agency during the upcoming offseason
He is 34 years old and is no longer a significant offensive contributor from the blue line
so he likely won't command a big deal with any team
he isn't far removed from posting a plus-minus number of plus-seven in 2022-23 for the Hurricanes and has appeared in 38 postseason games in his career
Some other team may be interested in signing him and playing him far more than the Rangers have
which could lead to less frustration on his end with his next deal

On Sunday, de Haan made clear to reporters that he's dismayed over his current situation with the Rangers
telling the media that he thinks "it's f––ed" that he hasn't been in the lineup of late
While he initially indicated he wanted to air out his thoughts with reporters on Sunday
he later backtracked and decided it would be best to speak at the conclusion of the season
He did take to social media to provide a bit of clarity
"I was hoping that I would have been able to express in a scrum setting versus a quote as I was going onto the ice and having it on the internet 30 seconds later," wrote de Haan

Washington and Lee law professor Sarah Haan has published an article in the Seattle University Law Review
“Corporate Governance Speech,” examines the regulation of communications among shareholders
and officers though which corporate governance is accomplished
“Recognizing corporate governance speech as a cohesive category leads to another conclusion: the corporation’s expressive interests cannot be burdened by laws regulating the internal communicative processes through which the corporation itself is constituted
This insight originates with Justice Lewis F
Supreme Court’s best regarded experts on corporate law
who once defended the constitutionality of the SEC’s Shareholder Proposal Rule as regulation of “speech by a corporation to itself.” It follows from Justice Powell’s insight that parties challenging corporate disclosure mandates cannot establish any burden on the expressive rights of the corporation or its managers
this Article shows how a streamlined form of First Amendment scrutiny could be applied to the regulation of corporate governance speech
including the disclosure mandates that are ubiquitous in securities regulation
The Article argues for a First Amendment approach to corporate governance speech that is sensitive to the democratic processes governing corporate organization
and to the democratic nature of informationally efficient markets,” writes Haan

Calvin de Haan’s recent comments add to a growing list of Rangers players expressing frustration this season
As the team stumbles toward the finish line
questions about locker room culture and management are heating up
Prior to an optional skate for the New York Rangers this morning
who has only suited up in three games since coming over in the Ryan Lindgren trade
shared some frustrations in a passing comment with Mollie Walker of the New York Post:
#NYR Calvin de Haan walked past us as he was about to get on the ice and commented on how it’s all finally over
It’s fucked.’ We asked if he wanted to talk
that quote made the rounds and spread like wildfire through no fault of Mollie’s or de Haan’s
This season has been an utter disaster for the Rangers and one of the many storylines surrounding this franchise throughout the season is various circumstances where players have voiced their frustrations
It started with Kaapo Kakko and continued with Zac Jones
it can be dated back to the offseason with Barclay Goodrow and Jacob Trouba and even beyond that with Vitali Kravtsov.
Blueshirt Bandwidth podcast out every Thursday
A thirty minute practice and one conversation with the Rangers’ PR department later
de Haan decided to wait until the end of the season
After coming off the ice and having a conversation with #NYR PR
de Haan decided he wanted to wait until the end of the season so he could get more information.I confirmed it was his decision and he said yes
but it was clear the Blueshirts didn’t want him to talk
About an hour and a half after all this went down
de Haan made the following statement in reply to Jonny Lazarus on X:
but the main takeaway is that it’s not just one or two players that aren’t happy with how the Rangers are running things
Joe Fortunato is going to have a piece taking a deeper look at this coming soon
but the culture problem in New York is a serious issue—one that is raising some really justifiable concerns moving forward with Chris Drury at the helm
He made mention of this in his statement but the Rangers were 2-0-1 with him in the lineup
the Rangers defense pairings were really good in those first few games that followed the Ryan Lindgren trade and de Haan was a big part of that
at 33 years old maybe he’s not someone you should want to rely on every night
But he gave this team every reason to believe he could be a valuable option on the back end moving forward.
Now, the blue line did get a little crowded once everyone was healthy—although it turns out not everyone actually was, as we learned Braden Schneider has been nursing an injury for a while while playing through it
Not to mention the Rangers also brought inCarson Soucy
which played a huge role in de Haan becoming a healthy scratch for essentially the rest of the season (18 straight games)
The team was also set on remaining competitive
and trying to push for that final wildcard position to make the playoffs
along with the fact that the team continued to struggle
the fact that de Haan remained in the press box made no sense to anyone
including the veteran defenseman himself.
You can say the line about how you can only dress so many skaters but it’s incredibly difficult to comprehend how there wasn’t a single opportunity to give de Haan a second look in the last 18 games
Would he have been a difference maker and helped the Rangers get to a playoff spot
But seeing some sort of effort to make chances and find a solution would have been better than the result we saw on a nightly basis.
It will be especially interesting now to see if Calvin de Haan gets in the action at all with two games remaining in the season. We know that Matthew Robertson, who was called up in correspondence with the Braden Schneider injury
will make his NHL debut in one of those games
which makes finding a place for de Haan all the more difficult
de Haan's locker clean-out day interview will be an incredibly interesting one to look out for

The second-round pick is the better of their own or that of the Carolina Hurricanes

Calvin de Haan has become the latest Ranger to voice his frustrations over his playing time, joining Kaapo Kakko, Jimmy Vesey, and Zac Jones in an ever growing list of frustrated Rangers. Initially, Calvin de Haan’s frustrations were colorful but not detailed, though he was able to clarify on social media later
though his situation is not unlike Vesey’s
as is understanding the full scope of the issue
Focusing on Calvin de Haan’s frustrations
he was acquired in a deadline deal as a roster balancing piece
he looked very good in his three games before being unceremoniously booted from the blue line
The Rangers went 2-0-1 in that time with de Haan playing solid defense on the third pair
winning the high danger chance battle 12-9 over those three games
including a 3-1 advantage against the division winning Capitals
giving the Rangers balance on their blue line
It’s easy to say the acquisition of Carson Soucy made de Haan a redundant piece
but there was a large stretch of games where Adam Fox was hurt and de Haan still didn’t play
This overlapped with a stretch where both Soucy and de Haan were scratched
So competition had little to do with de Haan’s ice time
We will never know why de Haan was continually scratched by Peter Laviolette
despite on-ice results that have been better than both Soucy and Urho Vaakanainen
so scratching de Haan every night seemed counter productive to his goals
NHL coaches are weird and set in their ways
Calvin de Haan’s frustrations are valid
but his ice time is the least of anyone’s concerns right now
That’s nothing against him and his complaints
but the Rangers needed to see what they had in both Vaakanainen and Soucy
Vaakanainen has since been extended and Soucy has looked pretty rough
It would not surprise me to see Soucy traded in the offseason
He has a right to be upset with how he’s been handled here
but he is what he is at this point for the Rangers
are both valid and inconsequential to the Rangers
this is another symptom of a much larger problem for the Rangers
we’ve had many players voice frustrations at their treatment
The quartet mentioned above are from this year
but we’ve heard from Vitali Kravtsov
who was publicly berated by Drury at one point
The status of the player and whether they were a draft bust doesn’t matter
It’s easy as a fan to default to “well Kravtsov was a bust” and “well de Haan and Vesey were spare parts” and “Kakko wasn’t producing.” These are all factual statements
In this case, the trees are each individual complaint. The forest is that there are now at least 5 complaints like this across multiple coaches, and that’s just what we know about. The lone constant in this span is Drury, and it’s something I wrote about in October 2021
For the sake of this post we won’t be diving into each trade or signing
instead focusing on personnel relationships
it’s that the Mike Babcock approach doesn’t work anymore
Players aren’t reacting the same way
and the hardnose approach needs to be softened
This rings especially true when publicly berating players
This goes far beyond just the five guys mentioned here
I have staunchly defended Drury’s approach to shedding Barclay Goodrow via waivers
but it appears he did not even give Goodrow a heads up first
There was no warning given to either Jacob Trouba or Chris Kreider about their inclusion in that trade memo either
So now we have eight players ranging from kid to respected veteran all showing communication issues with Drury
The stink this year starts at the very top
and Drury is not exempt from blame in how this season went
especially in light of all these complaints
Whatever Drury is doing in the locker room
His desire to have a hand in everything isn’t working
Refusing to delegate and/or learn to address his shortcomings isn’t working
it’s clear Drury needs a buffer between him and the players
Someone to soften the communication and perhaps keep Drury clear of the locker room
That’s one thing both Glen Sather and Jeff Gorton were good with: They didn’t meddle in the locker room
The players quitting this year is most certainly connected to how Drury has treated his players
Peter Laviolette is not innocent in any of this
but since the issue extends to both Gerard Gallant as well
It is also clear they need a change in the front office
but he needs a buffer between him and the players
or else the Rangers will fall further into joke territory
This iteration of the Rangers is dangerously close to the 1998-2004 dark ages teams
but at least those teams didn’t quit on the fans

And now that this miserable New York Rangers season is just about over
the veteran defenseman is apparently ready to unleash his simmering anger
Beat writers Mollie Walker (New York Post) and Peter Baugh (The Athletic) each reported that de Haan had a few choice words about his situation with the Rangers on his way to the ice for an optional practice in South Florida on Sunday
The 13-year NHL veteran reportedly said that it’s “f—-d” how the Rangers have treated him since he was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche on March 1
He also reportedly said “just wasting time,” perhaps about taking part in practice after being a healthy scratch for 18 straight games
De Haan told the reporters he’d speak with them after practice
after speaking to a member of the Rangers public relations staff
he begged off and said he’d speak another day
Because his initial comments were posted on social media
de Haan posted a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter) to explain himself
“I’m not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization
I would have preferred a scrum setting to chat about how my time with the Rangers has gone,” de Haan stated in part
“As a player you have to respect the lineup decisions whether you like them or not
Related: Mark Messier believes ‘spirit was missing’ for Rangers during this miserable season
It seems that de Haan held his tongue until the Rangers were officially eliminated from playoff contention
which they were Saturday following a 7-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes
The 33-year-old played three games in a row after the trade
and the Rangers snagged five of six points (2-0-1)
after Carson Soucy was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in a pre-deadline trade
The Rangers are 6-10-2 in the past 18 games without de Haan in the lineup
Urho Vaakanainen and Zac Jones each have received playing time instead of de Haan
who had one assist and was plus-4 in the three games he played with the Rangers
He had seven assists and was minus-8 in 44 games earlier this season with the Avalanche
“Did I help win those games I played
But we still won and collected some crucial points to climb the standings,” de Haan said in his statement
“I understand the youth movement in the NHL
but again I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game.”
Maybe the final straw for de Haan was that the Rangers recalled defenseman Matthew Robertson from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Sunday and coach Peter Laviolette said the 24-year-old will make his NHL debut against the Florida Panthers on Monday
Braden Schneider won’t play the final two games of the season because of an upper-body injury
The Rangers were carrying two extra defensemen before electing to sit Schneider
but added Robertson to give him an opportunity with nothing on the line for the Blueshirts
De Haan is set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end
Since he is not part of New York’s future
it makes sense to get a look at Robertson instead
The Rangers close out the season Thursday at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning
de Haan should have the chance to get things off his chest either Friday or Saturday

this week of games really doesn’t mean anything of importance
But something happened on Sunday afternoon that might have just highlighted what the offseason could look like
The New York Rangers are out of playoff contention
Newly acquired and rarely used defenseman Calvin de Haan opened up a whole can of worms to the media on Sunday with one of the most bizarre quotes you will see
#NYR Calvin de Haan walked past us as he was about to get on the ice and commented on how it’s all finally over
This has all the makings of a very uncomfortable situation this offseason
both behind closed doors and with the media
something that hasn’t been very prevalent in the past
and their performance struggles could be blamed on that as a part of it
General Manager Chris Drury has to make sure his ducks are in a row because these occurrences are starting to stack up
The comments made by de Haan come after he was scratched from the lineup 18 times this season after playing in the three games after his trade to New York
expected to completely change around the season
His acquisition in the Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey trade with the Colorado Avalanche was likely to dump those salaries
why not give de Haan a shot down the stretch
This season has been very public for the front office. There was the drama surrounding the offseason comments on Jacob Trouba, then Trouba’s comments on the front office after he was traded to Anaheim. Plus, the Kaapo Kakko situation, in which he expressed his displeasure with management before being sent to Seattle
This situation with de Haan is another example of why there may be changes coming in the offseason
but upper management also needs to be looked at hard
His comments on his treatment are bizarre and surprising
but with the track record being the way it is

and a brutally honest quote: Calvin de Haan’s short Rangers stint revealed deeper issues behind the scenes
This post is part of an ongoing series of Rangers Report Cards, grading the performance of each member of the 2024-25 New York Rangers. To view more report cards in this series, go here
we had no expectations at all for Calvin de Haan
perhaps someone on this masthead mulled it over as a hypothetical "who would be a good
safe depth defenseman the Rangers could get for cheap" question
He hasn't played 60 games in a single season since 2021-22
20 assists) in the only year of his career that played all 82 games
adding one more log to the jam that was a defense corps better characterized as having quantity over quality
After suiting up for the Blueshirts in the first three games after he came over from Colorado
de Haan sat in the press box for the final 20 games of the regular season
It's certainly worth mentioning that the Rangers were 2-0-1 in those three games
recording back-to-back shutouts against the Nashville Predators and the New York Islanders
and losing to the Washington Capitals in overtime
de Haan looked good in the limited role he was being asked to play
picking up an assist in his first game as a New York Ranger
de Haan played the majority of his Rangers minutes paired with Zac Jones
As for why what we saw from de Haan in these three games didn't merit more ice time
that's a question you'll have to direct to former Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette
You'd only get a Coach ChatGPT non-response response
Given the repeated defensive breakdowns that we witnessed in the 20 games that de Haan sat—and throughout the entire season—there doesn't seem to be an obvious reason we shouldn't have seen more of him
When we remember Calvin de Haan's (breif) time as a New York Ranger, it won't be for anything that he did on the ice. It'll be for what he said while he was walking on to the ice at the Rangers' practice facility
He'd go on to revise and extend his remarks in a reply to Jonny Lazarus on X:
It's hard to disagree with de Haan's stark and profane assessment of his time in New York
It's strange the extent to which NHL general managers don't have as much of a say over the lineup decisions NHL coaches make as GMs in other sports do
It's possible that Chris Drury had little intention of acquiring de Haan when he swung the deal with Colorado for Lindgren and Vesey
Colorado may have insisted the Rangers take him just to open a roster spot for Lindgren
this again is where the disconnect between GM and coach becomes evident
as well does one of Peter Laviolette myriad professional failings
Laviolette's assessment of the options available to him in the Rangers defensive corps was simply wrong
And Chris Drury's inability or unwillingness to assert a more firm hand with the coach and the line up allowed for the insanity of those poor defensive lineup decisions to be made over and over again
We'll remember Calvin de Haan more for what he revealed about the team than anything he did on skates
de Haan only played three games with the Rangers
and the Rangers looked good when he played in them
he's off to find his next free agent contract—that quest certainly a big reason why he quickly worked to deescalate his first comments
We just don't have enough facts in evidence to give him any grade other than an "incomplete," but we'll always appreciate the radical candor that de Haan gave us in that minute about just how ridiculous stupid and awful lineup decisions were throughout the 2024-25 season
Calvin de Haan isn't exactly pleased with how his New York Rangers tenure has gone so far
Since joining the Rangers through a March 1 trade from the Colorado Avalanche
the veteran defenceman has played in just three games with his new team
But as he took the ice for morning skate on Sunday, the New York Post's Millie Walker reported hearing de Haan say something "to the effect of
Reporters then asked de Haan if he wanted to speak after the skate
to which he answered "yes" and said he would be "very transparent," Walker added
de Haan decided he wanted to wait until the end of the season to speak to the media about his situation
But as conversation began after Walker's report, de Haan took to social media to give his take on his time in the Big Apple.
"I was hoping that I would have been able to express in a scrum setting versus a quote as I was going onto the ice and having it on the Internet 30 seconds later," de Haan wrote on X. "I said what I said because I am frustrated, and any competitor who says that they would be happy in this position would be lying to you.
"After playing three games for the team and going 2-0-1, I thought I maybe would have got an opportunity to jump into the lineup and help win some games."
de Haan's three games as a Ranger all came in the immediate aftermath of the trade, as the 33-year-old averaged 15:51 of ice time in wins over the Predators and Islanders and an overtime loss to the Capitals. de Haan picked up one assist and had a plus-3 rating in those games.
New York, of course, was eliminated from playoff contention earlier this week and has since fallen to 37-36-7 with two games to play.
Playing in his 13th NHL season with his sixth team, de Haan is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of 2024-25.
"I’m not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization, I would have preferred a scrum setting to chat about how my time with the Rangers has gone," he finished. "As a player you have to respect the lineup decisions whether you like them or not, it’s just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do. I hope everyone understands."
The Rangers finish their season with games against Florida and Tampa Bay on Monday and Thursday.

Calvin de Haan continues to provide a steadying presence on the back end
and Tampa Bay Lightning before signing a one-year contract with the Avs during the summer of 2024
stay-at-home [defending] mindset,” Jared Bednar said when asked what de Haan brings to the defensive unit
He’s got that veteran experience so he doesn’t get rattled.”
averaging 15:24 of time on ice per contest
All the defending mentality that you want in a guy in certain situations.”
The transition to Denver has been pretty seamless for him and his family
adding that they are getting used to the area they live in
He also said that the hockey is pretty similar to where he’s played before
so that stuff is pretty easy to adapt to.”
de Haan has been paired with 26-year-old Sam Malinski on defense
who made his NHL debut with the Avs last season
The veteran said he’s trying to take a mentorship role with Malinski
emphasizing the importance of having a well-rounded game
“You’ve got to be able to play defense still in this league to earn a paycheck,” de Haan said
“You can’t just go out there and score billions of points and be minus-50
You have to still take care of your own end.”
“That’s one thing I’ve really tried to harp on him and communicate to him as well
and the rest will take care of itself at the end of the day.”
said playing on a pair with de Haan has been helpful
“I think especially in times where we’re maybe struggling to get the puck out of the zone,” Malinski said
“He’s a guy that knows how to make the quick fix and simple our game down so that we’re playing efficiently.”
Bednar said a player’s defensive partner is their lifeline
and it’s important for those partners to help each other
[a] veteran guy that can read plays and talk through things in the defensive zone I think really helps Sam,” Bednar said
“And I think Sam really helps Calvin with his puck-moving ability and the ability to jump up and create offense when they’re on the ice as well.”
saying he has more flair to his game while de Haan’s game is simpler
“And then he helps me out in the d-zone when I need it.”
One thing Malinski said he’s learned from de Haan is that sometimes
“I think he’s a player who plays the game really simple,” Malinski said
“And I think he would say the same about himself
de Haan has helped the team both on the ice and in the locker room
