“The bloke you really want is already in the United States,” the punting instructor told Poppinga, noting he had done his homework on BYU and knew that the Cougars had a lot of older, married players.
“I went out there and watched a bunch of guys kick,” Poppinga said Tuesday as No. 14 BYU prepared for Saturday’s Big 12 showdown with 3-2 Arizona at LaVell Edwards Stadium (2 p.m.
we got a guy named Sam Vander Haar that is leaving Pitt that I think you will really be interested in
We think he would be a great fit for BYU.’”
Poppinga was connected to ProKick by BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill, who used the academy extensively when he was at Utah and Weber State. Former University of Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky
along with Michael Dickson of the Seattle Seahawks and Cameron Johnston of the Pittsburgh Steelers
Two-time Ray Guy Award winner Tom Hackett, a former Utes punter, is also from Australia and a ProKick product.
saw that Vander Haar had entered the transfer portal after the Panthers’ spring camp in 2023
and contacted the 27-year-old from Australia
and then from there started recruiting him
at the end of 2019 while on a hike in the Pittsburgh area and the couple married in 2022
she graduated from Duquesne (the school that upset BYU basketball in the Big Dance last March) and is now a 30-year-old traveling nurse
finds it “quite ironic” that he is the oldest player on the team
but didn’t serve a two-year mission like many BYU athletes do because he is not a member of the Latter-day Saint faith
“It has been amazing to have guys over here that I can share experiences with,” he said
but it is nice to have guys like (defensive end) Tyler Batty and other guys on the team that I can share commonalities with
just because of our age and life experience
Vander Haar played Australian rules football between the ages of 6-20
but when it didn’t work out professionally
he says he “looked at a new avenue” and tried his hand
Pretty much all the Australian punters you see on TV are pretty much all from that program,” he said
and then obviously got recruited by Pitt.”
Said Poppinga: “The ProKick coaches were right
He’s been a great fit and already done some great stuff for us this season.”
One of those great things Vander Haar has done came in the second half of the 34-28 win over Baylor
when the Aussie channeled his Australian football roots and supremely executed a fake punt that went for 22 yards
It led to BYU’s only points of the second half
Vander Haar told BYUtv the Cougars have been practicing the fake all fall
He said he asks Poppinga to call it pretty much every time he goes out to punt
it is a very comfortable feeling running with the ball
I had to learn the ball security aspect of actually protecting the ball
but with the Australian rules football background
running with the ball wasn’t super uncommon
Poppinga said for some of the members of the coaching staff, it was extra sweet because Baylor successfully executed an onside kick against BYU three years ago in Waco en route to a 38-24 win.
“We gave them one extra possession the last time we were down there
it was fun to see those guys really execute in that moment,” Poppinga said
Poppinga and Vander Haar said it wouldn’t have happened without the blocking of guys such as Tanner Wall
I feel good about it.’ And then Jay (Hill) had given me the green light
Vander Haar and Landon Rehkow — younger brother of Cincinnati Bengals punter Ryan Rehkow — were listed as co-starters at punter on the depth chart
but the two rotated the first two and a half games of the season
and Vander Haar has been the man since then
Not only did he perfectly execute the fake punt against Baylor
he got off another one that pinned the Bears at their 3-yard-line
We gotta do some better stuff at just the scheme that we are doing
But we are really pleased with how far he has come,” Poppinga said of Vander Haar
I don’t think they really knew how to use him
Poppinga acknowledged the competition was “pretty tight” in fall camp
which is why both punters got reps early in the season
Sam has really kind of excelled and just shown that he is the guy
“At this point there are still some things we can do and will do with Landon
I would say right now that Sam is the mainstay as the punter.”
Regardless of whether he won the job or not
Vander Haar said he made the right decision in coming to Provo
just as his late grandfather did years ago when he migrated from Amsterdam to Australia
taking his Dutch bloodlines to the place locals call “Oz.”
“It was just a really good fit for not only myself
“We very much love everything BYU stands for
even though we are not a part of the faith
We think it is really special how there is a really large investment in that
“I just think a lot of the guys on the team have a really good perspective on life
and it makes you play better football in my opinion,” he continued
“I knew it was a place where I could come and compete
I really wanted to go somewhere where I could contribute to a team’s success

Ready for some BYU football trivia to stump your friends
Ask where the oldest player on the Cougar roster in 2024 served his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
It’s actually a trick question because 27-year-old sophomore punter Sam Van Der Haar didn’t serve a mission
But the Pitt transfer who is from Melbourne
said earlier in August that he’s loving being in Provo and being a Cougar
I’m a lot more familiar now with this game we’re running
and a lot more comfortable with the coaches
Van Der Haar was a semi-pro Australian-rules football player before deciding to get involved in ProKick Australia and look at his American football options
He said he didn’t envision things playing out the way they have and ending up at BYU
“I thought that when I committed to somewhere
where I’d be playing for four years,” Van Der Haar said
“But coming here has been an absolute blessing
There is a high-level of maturity here and a little bit of perspective as well with the whole missionary aspect with the guys
is an avid hiker and so being so close to great trails has been something they’ve enjoyed
He said there are moments where he misses being around his friends and family
“I think that the lifestyle that my wife and I have here has been exactly kind of what we want,” Van Der Haar said
It makes it pretty easy to not miss home living somewhere like here
BYU junior kicker Will Ferrin said Van Der Haar has done his part effectively to become part of the Cougar team
“He has one of the best mindsets I think I’ve ever seen from a punter,” Ferrin said
Ferrin said that he saw early on that Van Der Haar wanted to treat practice the same way he did
put in the effort to make the repetitions as game-like as possible
“We’re in the indoor practice facility in January and we’re standing on the sideline waiting to run on for a kick,” Ferrin said
“He’s going to go and be sitting in the back of the end zone to hit a backed-up punt
He is so focused and determined on what he’s doing.”
BYU special team coordinator Kelly Poppinga said Van Der Haar brings some unique versatility to the punt game
Having that one year at Pitt has put him ahead of some of the other Australian guys I’ve had in the past
I’m excited about the variety of kicks he can do.”
Van Der Haar said that punting has nuances that many don’t recognize
“Punting is not one size fits all in how you can do it,” he said
“You can do a very variable amount of different schemes
It’s been cool that we’ve been able to kind of employ different types of punts and just to try and keep the return team guessing
“I think that’s kind of been our main goal over the spring and fall camps
I think the more versatility that we can have
Van Der Haar has been battling freshman Landon Rehkow — younger brother of former Cougar star punter Ryan Rehkow — for the starting job
While it hasn’t drawn the attention of the QB battle
Poppinga said it’s been an excellent competition
“Landon is right there pushing as well,” Poppinga said
“I think the competition is going to bring the best out of both guys
I see they are encouraging each other and helping each other if there are mistakes
trying to help everybody progress to get better
It’s a really good group and I like them a lot.”
Van Der Haar said he’s enjoy getting to work with Landon Rehkow and see his ability
“I have a really good relationship with Landon,” Van Der Haar said
He said he is focused on doing the best job he can to take care of business if his number is called
“I’m trying to basically be at least 43 yards down on the sideline
knowing that the further we can put it outside the numbers
the less likelihood you have of return yards
“I’ve been really hard on myself on putting it in the right spots
I’ve just been trying to be as flexible as possible
Ferrin said that Van Der Haar and Landon Rehkow have also played a big role for the placekicking as they are the holders
“I think holding is a position that people don’t think a whole lot about,” Ferrin said
on just about every weekday the whole offseason
we were going out and getting snaps and kicks.”
Ferrin said as a kicker you have to make sure the holder knows exactly what you need to give you the best chance to put the ball through the uprights
which is something the holders have done well
“It’s the snapper’s job to get the laces up and then the holder sets it,” Ferrin said
“He needs to spin it and get the right tilt
Sam has done that and had a good attitude about that
I think he’s even gone the extra mile a little bit to now we’re getting to the point where Sam understands what the different tilts will do to my ball flight
It’s something we can do because we’ve put so much time into it.”
That time together has also got Ferrin comfortable with some good-natured teasing of his friend and teammate
“His accent is great,” Ferrin said with a grin
“I always joke with him that he’s starting to lose his accent
He gets all angry and makes it even stronger.”
Van Der Haar said his goal now is to just make the most of every opportunity and be ready when the season arrives
“I think everybody kind of knows what we’re doing schematically,” Van Der Haar said
“It’s just about executing at a high level and the only way you can do that is through repetitions and practicing with intention
I think we’re going to be very successful.”

Vander Haar, a sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, executed the first fake punt of his collegiate career at Baylor, running for 22 yards and a Cougar first down to help No. 22 BYU defeat the Bears 34-28 in Waco. The fourth down conversion eventually led to a field goal and a 34-21 lead in the fourth quarter. On the day, Vander Harr had three punts, averaging 51.0 yards per kick, including a key 70-yard boot late in the fourth quarter that pinned Baylor down at the 3-yard line.
Through five games, Vander Haar has 14 punts for 617 yards for an average of 44.1 yards per kick, tied for 29th in the nation. In addition, he has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line six times.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia, native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to determine the winner of the Ray Guy Award each year are total yards, net punting average, punts downed or kicked out of bounds inside the 20-yard line and net punting average. The winner must also display leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
The Ray Guy Award committee will announce 10 semifinalists for the award on Nov. 15. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists to be announced on Nov. 26. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots to select the nation’s top punter for 2024.
The winner of the 2004 Ray Guy Award will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show airing on ESPN on Dec. 12.

Patrick Wolf has shared another track from his upcoming album
Following Limbo and Dies Irae
Hymn Of The Haar marks the third preview of 'Crying The Neck'
the London artist's first full-length release in 13 years
due out on April 25 via Apport/Virgin Music
which layers his distinctive, emotive vocals with a rich string arrangement
"I wrote Hymn Of The Haar over three years of writing walks and researching the history and psychogeography of the White Cliffs of Dover near where I live and work in east Kent
Studying from the romantic mythologising aspect of Alice Duer Miller’s work and the cliffs’ famous wartime anthem to observing Dover relentlessly exploited as the centre of ‘crisis’ after ‘crisis’ within the British media
my own private relationship with this beautiful and bewildering stretch of land
that we can only learn how to live alongside our sorrows in order to be temporarily free of them
temporarily obscuring our path and vision in the hymn of the passing mist of cloud
It was with this song I began to make out a relationship between Crying the Neck and my second album Wind in the Wires
where at 21 I was fighting to be free by being free of my sorrows but 20 years later I finally achieved that freedom in the acceptance of living alongside them
The final line is taken from a 10th Century poem written in Old English called ‘The Wanderer’: ‘Oft him anhaga are gebideð’ translating to ‘Often the solitary one finds mercy’."
Wolf will embark on a previously scheduled UK and European tour in May and June
He also has North American dates scheduled between September and November

Cycling fans often compare the toughness of pro cyclists to pro soccer players—known for their dramatic acting—and on Saturday at the Superprestige Gullegem
Dutch rider Lars van der Haar (Baloise–Trek Lions) certainly took one for the team
Van der Haar was in his first race back after some knee problems made him skip several races
but finally was able to compete at Gullegem
In Saturday’s penultimate round of the 2024-2025 Superprestige series in Gullegem
Wout van Aert and Eli Iserbyt battled it out in an exciting race that came down to the final lap
but a late mistake by Iserbyt gave van Aert the chance to pull ahead and take the win
extending his lead in the overall standings and putting him in a strong position to take the series title with one race left
Things were going pretty well for Van der Haar
until a crash knocked his previously dislocated shoulder out
And being the consummate professional he is, he wasn’t going to just call it a day. Plus, it wasn’t the first time he’d re-dislocated his shoulder
People often redislocate their shoulders easily after multiple dislocations due to weakened ligaments and a looser joint capsule
which reduce stability and make the shoulder more prone to injury
“There’s a problem there for Lars van der Haar,” Jez Cox of Eurosport
I think it is I think what we have just seen
So it’s safe to say he was familiar with the process
It’s one thing to do at home… but on the racecourse
he had his ad hoc medical device right with him—his saddle
Check out the ole “put it back in while racing” trick below

Breese Central junior Conlan Haar (left) swatted the ball away from Columbia senior Sam Donald (right)
and here scores the winning basket on a layup
Breese Central beat Columbia 57-55 in two overtimes
in the Class 2A Carlyle regional championship game at Carlyle High School in Carlyle on Friday February 28
CARLYLE — Breese Central junior Conlan Haar had a hunch
felt he might be called upon at some point during Friday's Class 2A Carlyle Regional boys basketball final against rival Columbia
"I just felt like I might end up playing a big part in this game."
Haar scored on a driving layup at the buzzer in double overtime to lift the Cougars to a 57-55 win in an instant classic at Carlyle High
captured their fourth successive regional crown and will face Benton (28-4) in the semifinal round of the Carterville Sectional at 7 p.m
stole the ball from Columbia senior forward Sam Donald
Haar sailed in all alone and calmly banked the ball in off the glass to send the large Breese Central gathering into a frenzy
"There's nothing better in the world than this," Haar said
Haar served as the most unlikeliest of heroes
He had scored just 24 points all season long and saw very little playing time after tallying 16 points in a season-opening win over Champaign Central on Nov
He was only in the game after three of the Cougars regulars foul out
who runs the show on offense; and Easton Becker were all disqualified
That put Cougars veteran coach Jeremy Shubert in a quandary
He had to rely on several players that were not used to crunch time minutes
"Sometimes you've just got to go and make plays and that's what they did," Shubert said of his bench crew
Haar wasn't the only player to step out of the shadows and into the limelight
Junior winger Bryce Wieter pumped in a season-high 11 points including a fall-away 3-pointer that tied the game at 55-all with 34 seconds left in the second extra session
"I just went out there and believed in myself," Wieter said
That's just the kind of team that we are."
The Cougars' gutsy finish came with three players on the court that had seen very little action during the regular season
The five on the floor at the end of the night had accounted for just 19 points in the game
Haar's play resulted in his only points of the game
It began when Jackson Kampwerth hassled Donald into turning into Haar
who used his quick hands to slap the ball loose
he's my buddy and we'll never forget this."
Breese Central recorded its seventh successive win over Columbia (26-7)
rolled out to a 33-23 lead midway through the third period
The Cougars used a 9-0 run to get within striking distance before the teams traded leads over the final nine minutes
"I did think we were in control," Columbia coach Mark Sandstrom said
"But when you look at Central's fourth quarters this season
It's a perfect example of why they call it March Madness."
Breese Central senior Preston Baker scored on a stick-back with 83 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the contest
Donald sank a pair of foul shots with 53 ticks on the clock in the first OT to set the stage for another extra period
I've had so much fun this year coaching these guys," Shubert said
"I tip my hat to every one of those guys on that bench."
The intensity-filled contest lasted 124 minutes and was played before a standing-room-only crowd of 1,200 in northern Carlyle
Wieter also added a conventional 3-point play in the first OT that put his team up 50-48
you never know when you're going to be needed," Wieter said
