Louis County Sheriff's Office on Monday identified the 46-year-old Chisholm man killed Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle crash in Cherry Township as Shawn Harold Hage
responders and law enforcement were dispatched at approximately 4:34 p.m
to Highway 5 near the intersection of Herman Road about 5 miles east of Hibbing
An eyewitness reported Hage had been traveling north on the highway and failed to navigate a turn
crossing the centerline and entering a steep
water-filled ditch beside the southbound lane
This caused Hage to be ejected from the motorcycle
Citizens on the scene attempted to provide lifesaving efforts
"Based upon observations on scene it appears that speeding and alcohol consumption are contributing factors to the accident," the news release said
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office and Midwest Medical Examiner's Office

MONTREAL – Under the lights at Wrigley Field
Michael Hage didn’t just score—he put on a show
His breakaway finish in Michigan’s outdoor game against Ohio State was a beauty in itself
but what followed is what really stole the spotlight
the Habs prospect mimicked a baseball player’s slide into second base while a teammate called him “safe.”
The lighthearted celebration was an ode to the historic Chicago Cubs ballpark
When the Canadiens selected the Oakville native 21st overall last summer
signaled their belief that he was a safe bet for their future
Just as he delivered in a big moment at Wrigley Field in early January
Hage has hit it out of the park in his first year of college hockey
The 18-year-old is second in scoring for the Wolverines—whose campaign now hangs in the balance—and ranks tied for fourth among all NCAA Division 1 freshmen with 34 points in 33 games this season
including four game-winning goals and a shootout decider
“That's always the type of player I’ve wanted to be,” Hage told the Canadiens content team
“Someone who the guys can rely upon in the big moments to step up
McGuire Award of Excellence* winner is holding his own against the stiffer competition—on and off the ice—as he adjusts to life as a student-athlete
“You definitely learn how to manage your time wisely
You don't want to be going into weekends stressed out about school
so it just kind of teaches you to get ahead of things and get your work done
it's just the same game you've been playing
but the teenager is making the most of his college experience
Hage says he and teammates took in Michigan football games at the "Big House" in the fall
he heads to Crisler Center to catch some of the Wolverines basketball team in action
“All the teams kind of support each other.”
that sense of camaraderie extends well beyond Ann Arbor
The Habs hopeful keeps a close eye on the Canadiens any chance he gets
following the team’s rebuild as it takes shape
“Whenever we have off nights and I get out of class or doing homework
we try to watch as much hockey as we can,” shared Hage
“It's been fun to watch them having some success and I'm hoping for them to get in the playoffs
Montreal’s director of player development Rob Ramage
who oversees the team’s Junior and amateur prospects
has visited Hage three or four times this season
and he’s been pretty happy with how things have been going
I don't think they try to be too involved in what they're telling you or telling you not to do as a player,” said the 6-foot-1 centerman
He's a great dude and has a lot of really good stories
Habs fans are being introduced to more and more of those game-breaking players like Hage
who graduated the collegiate circuit last year
is the latest high-profile prospect to leave his mark in Montreal
following in the footsteps of Cole Caufield—another NCAA alum who made an immediate impact in the NHL when he arrived on the big stage in 2021
who views college hockey as a breeding ground for the sport’s top talent
“I feel like when you can dominate a level as good as college hockey is right now
it proves that you're going to be alright at the NHL level,” he explained
it's a big adjustment; it's still very difficult
and those guys dominated at the college level before they left
That's as close as you're going to get to pro hockey.”
it’s not a question of if but when he makes that jump
is on something that the University of Michigan hasn’t accomplished in three decades: winning a national championship
That path became more challenging on March 9 when the Wolverines were eliminated from the Big Ten playoffs
they’ll have to wait until Selection Sunday on March 23
hoping for an at-large bid to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive
Hage is determined to continue developing into the player he wants to be
“I think using my skating and my size to not only create offense
but to be solid defensively and to be hard to play against on the forecheck are things that I continue to work on,” he said
be hard to play against and be someone that play in any situation.”
So far Hage is proving to be just what the Canadiens envisioned: a safe bet with high upside
But safe doesn’t mean conservative—it means reliable
competitive and capable of turning the tide of a game
McGuire Award of Excellence is presented annually to the NHL Draft prospect who best exemplifies commitment to excellence through strength of character
"Getting To Know..." is a new feature where we shine a spotlight on the people that make the Triangle music and arts scene so special
George Hage is a Charlotte-born and Raleigh-based designer and musician whose work you have most likely encountered at a music festival or out and about downtown
He's worked with festivals like Dreamville
he has designed logos and art for Transfer Co
Hage (pronunciation rhymes with "mirage") is also an accomplished comic artist and has built relationships in that world at conventions like HeroesCon in Charlotte and NC Comics Con in Durham
You may have even seen him in a X-Men comic in 2012
When he's not drawing, Hage is the principal songwriter, singer, and guitarist in the band Jack The Radio
Jack The Radio had a bit of a minimal setup
"We were just a two-piece and a computer," Hage recalls
In 2009 Jack The Radio expanded to a full band and released their first record "Pretty Money" two years later
Their latest album "Under Lonely Light" was released in 2024
You also might have heard their music on shows like Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
I met up with Hage to talk about his work and about what makes the Triangle such a special place for musicians and artists
but in high school and college I started taking it a bit more seriously
so I started tying my art and visuals to my music
When Jack The Radio formed we really didn't have money for art
so the band was kind enough to let me come up with some stuff
I did a lot of the early posters for the band
which led me to doing stuff for other bands around town."
What are some of your favorite projects you've worked on
which formed in the early days of Hopscotch
and a bunch of other artists created a companion to the Hopscotch Music Festival that was screen printed
That was really when I started doing screen printing locally with AdAm Peele
That was also where I got to meet a lot of the local Triangle artists and found that community of people."
Is there a design you're the most proud of
but the most commented on is the Dreamville letters
we made these custom letters spelling out 'DREAMVILLE.' It was 40-plus feet wide and 6 feet tall
It was the first big 3D installation I had done
and after the festival we made a few more letters because we realized we could spell out 'RALEIGH,' and those letters are what you see up now at Transfer Co
That design has led to lots of other work for me
including the ice skating rink they have at Red Hat Amphitheater in the winter."
an arts organization here in Raleigh that also puts on a festival and also helps out with other events and street festivals around town."
I saw on your website that outside of Raleigh you've also made an appearance in the Marvel universe (Gambit #2)
I was into comics as a kid and got back into them as an adult
I started going to comic cons like HeroesCon in Charlotte and NC Comic Con in Durham as an artist to meet people and sell records and comics that I had worked on
At those I was able to connect with all these artists in the comic industry and Clay Mann was cool enough to include me in Gambit #2 in 2012
My mom didn't believe me when it first happened."
Let's talk about the early days of Jack The Radio
Hopscotch had its first year in 2010 so we were seeing lots of big bands coming through Raleigh
There were lots of other great festivals but Hopscotch really took things to another level and provided local bands with bigger opportunities
Red Hat Amphitheater opened around that time too so it was a really exciting time to be in downtown Raleigh."
Who were some of your favorite artists around that time
American Aquarium was really starting to lift off at that time
I was also really into the scene in Carrboro at the time with Ryan Gustafson and Josh Moore
Jack The Radio has had their music placed in a lot of TV shows
a company that was based out of the Triangle
and a year later we had three songs on an episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
We were all huge fans of Bourdain so we lost our minds
It was a complete surprise and the coolest thing
We've also been lucky enough to have our music on shows like Modern Family
I wasn't too far from the speedway so that was really cool to me
Let's talk a little bit more generally about life in the Triangle
How would you describe the music scene here to somebody who isn't familiar
and I don't know if it's because of all the universities that bring people and jobs to the area
North Carolina as a whole is very eclectic
is from here and so are all these legendary jazz and bluegrass legends
You really see that in the Triangle because we have crazy good bluegrass
That exists in other parts of the state but it feels more concentrated here
The amount of talent continues to blow my mind."
Who are some of the local artists you're most excited about right now
"I feel like the crew at Sleepy Cat Records is doing some really cool stuff
I also feel like the All Y'all Records crew has some really cool stuff happening in the Americana space
I love the records that Fancy Gap and Skylar Gudasz have put out recently
Are there any trends you're seeing locally that you're excited about
"I love seeing so much collaboration and people not being afraid to cross genres
I think it's cool to see so many artists feature on each other's songs
It's a nice way to feel the energy of other artists."
so we're in the market for a new favorite restaurant
and trying something different every time."
but we do really love playing The Pour House
We co-host a day party there during Hopscotch every year and it's always one of my favorite days of the year."
Munjo Munjo is one of my favorite art shops
They always have something new and funky and off the beaten path
It's probably our favorite place to grab a drink in town."
"Right now I'm working on a couple new art projects
I also just finished up some T-shirt designs for a denim clothing brand called Devil Dog Dungarees
I'm also working on some new stuff for Red Hat Amphitheater
we've got some new music coming out soon that we'll release as an EP and we're also talking about a Tom Petty covers EP that we're all pretty excited about."

Michigan carried a 3-1 lead into the visitor's room inside the Kohl Center
The Wolverines scored on three of the seven shots they put on goal in the first
while the penalty-kill unit was the early star
Wisconsin trimmed the deficit at 4:46 of the second period by gaining the edge on the outside with a burst of speed and depositing a slick goal between the legs of Stein to make it 3-2
The Badgers followed it up with another goal at 11:05 to tie the game at three goals apiece
Michigan received its second power play of the weekend with 57.8 seconds left in the middle period after they earned the advantage by driving the puck deep into the UW zone
Michigan was deadlocked with Wisconsin at 3-3

-- The fifth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team stormed out to a 4-1 lead on the road on Friday night (Nov
22) at Penn State before things tightened up
as the Wolverines knocked off the Nittany Lions in a 6-5 decision inside Pegula Ice Arena to secure U-M's fifth straight win
Fresh off of a bye week, Michigan started fast and kept the puck in Penn State's end for the first minute of the contest. With play still hemmed in down below the goal line, Josh Eernisse was whistled at 1:09 for boarding to give the home team an early power play
Penn State opened the scoring and made it 1-0 just 21 seconds later with a power-play goal in transition following an impressive individual effort
The Wolverines struck shortly thereafter when T.J. Hughes scored his first goal of the year at 2:33 by deflecting a point shot off the stick of freshman blueliner Will Felicio to tie the game
Building upon the success he had last year against PSU, William Whitelaw finished off a feed from Philippe Lapointe at 10:29 to make it a 3-1 game
Jacob Truscott joined the scoring with 5:39 left in the first period
burying his second power-play goal of the campaign
Michigan appeared to score a fifth goal with 4:19 on the board after a previous shot on goal was deflected high up into the air above the Penn State crease and then batted down to the ice
the officials emphatically waved it off for a hand pass
the Wolverines carried a commanding 4-1 lead into the locker room
but made them count by shooting 44 percent
Penn State did have a clear advantage in the faceoff dot
Logan Stein, who finished with 24 saves, made several key stops in the first half of the second period to preserve Michigan's three-goal lead. The score remained stagnant until Thomas Daskas was booked for interference at 7:42 to put the Nittany Lions back on the power play for the second time
Penn State capitalized on the power play for the second time in as many attempts with a wrist shot goal from the high slot to trim Michigan's lead to 4-2
While PSU attempted to grapple with the speed of Jackson Hallum as the junior carved up the ice in transition
they were forced to take a penalty to put U-M on the power play with 6:21 left in the second frame
Schifsky made the advantage count just 22 seconds later when he finished off a rebound from a point shot by crashing the blue paint with his stick on the ice
Truscott picked up the primary assist for putting the initial shot on goal while Whitelaw earned the secondary helper on Schifsky's sixth goal of the season
PSU trimmed the deficit once again and made it a 5-3 contest at the 18-minute mark with a shot off a rush that found the top corner
Michigan maintained its 5-3 lead over Penn State
PSU scored on a rebound to make it a one-goal game at 5-4
The Nittany Lions continued to ride a wave of momentum until they tied the game at 4:27
Eernisse was called for his second penalty of the night with 23 seconds remaining
With the net empty and the Nittany Lions touting a 6-on-4 advantage
the Wolverines were able to bury the puck against the boards in the corner until the final buzzer rang to provide relief
Michigan held on for the 6-5 win and earned three points in the conference standings to continue their win streak despite trailing PSU in both shots on goal (29-25) and faceoffs (43-26)
the teams face off once more at Pegula Ice Arena
and the game will be streamed live on B1G+
— After one of the happiest moments of her life
which followed the most tragic moment of her life
Rania Saba was looking through some old photos
Her eldest son, Michael Hage, had just been drafted by the Montreal Canadiens
the team her late husband and high school sweetheart
Alain is wearing the Canadiens jersey of his favourite player
“It blew my mind when I came across this picture,” Saba said
“It was always just a picture until I saw that picture after the draft and Michael was drafted in 2024
Saba and Alain met at her birthday party when they were only 13
They got married and started a life together
Alain’s family immigrated to Montreal in the 1960s from Egypt
Saba’s family immigrated to Montreal from Egypt when she was 5
She grew up in Pierrefonds — she used to take the bus to school with Guy Carbonneau’s daughter — and Alain grew up in Ville St
They went downtown when the Canadiens last won the Stanley Cup in 1993 and experienced the madness together
when the team the entire family loved drafted Michael in Las Vegas
Alain’s tragic death in the summer of 2023 has come to define Michael Hage’s journey
and while his father’s death is an important part of that journey
Hage’s life should not be defined by tragedy
It should be defined by triumph — of fighting through loss and coming out the other side stronger and better prepared to tackle life and his goals
“I think one of the things I find absolutely beautiful is his view on life,” Saba said
to being happy every day and moving forward and still finding thankfulness for everything that he had
(but) so many kids didn’t even get that kind of quality time with their dad
You have been more fortunate than most to have such a present dad
that some kids might have their dad for 50 years and not have had that
this is a story about triumph and about Michael the hockey player
So much so that his mother had to hold his hand on the soccer field
He was always better than most at every level and he just loved it
“I don’t know that he would be the same child without hockey.”
Hage can’t remember the old version of himself
he had the perfect person in his life to harness it
“It’s definitely something I felt pretty good at right away — sometimes people are just better at certain things than others
“It’s something I had kind of a knack for and really enjoyed
But I think my dad pushing me was just the extra step that helped me to start getting better and better
but if you don’t pursue it and continue to push — when you’re young
no 7-year-old is going to push themselves to do any extra work
skate and work out in the summer at Shield Athletics in Burlington
where two other hockey brothers — Arber and Florian Xhekaj — also train
Arber Xhekaj remembers when Hage first joined his pro group on the ice a couple of years ago
“I just think he didn’t care,” Xhekaj said
he would show up for a three-on-three and just dangle everyone
he’s looking you off on a two-on-one and shooting
By the time Hage was 10, he was exposed to the rest of the hockey world for the first time at the Brick Tournament in Edmonton. Thirty-five NHL draft picks – with more to come in 2025 – played in that tournament, including 2024 No. 1 pick Macklin Celebrini
“I did well in that tournament,” Hage said. “We lost in the semifinals to Minnesota
Hage left out the part where he led the tournament in scoring with 11 points in six games. For comparison, one year prior, Connor Bedard had nine points in that tournament
Hage said the Brick is one of the hockey memories that shaped who he is as a player today
That’s where Hage’s clutch gene first emerged
The tournament didn’t start well for Hage’s team
to the point his father and some of the other dads started looking into early return flights
But his team made the final against Team U.S
West and was down a goal when Team Ontario pulled the goalie with a little over a minute left
tied it and then got a breakaway pass and scored really late
We won in regulation with six seconds left,” Hage said
I remember my dad was usually super stiff and calm at the rink
But me and my mom would look back at the video and he was jumping up and down.”
Alain Hage told his son he played a good game
That’s usually how it was — he wasn’t going to tell me everything that was going well
the compliments did not come easily,” Saba confirmed
When Hage visited the University of Michigan campus with his father
The plan to go through the OHL shifted to the USHL with the Chicago Steel
His younger brother will follow that same path; Alexander committed to the Wolverines last summer and currently plays for the Steel
“I remember when I was deciding where to go to school
he really loved it here (at Michigan),” Hage said of his father
“It would have been cool to have him watch me play here
you’ve just got to move on and continue to play like he’s watching
He had four goals and three assists in his first five collegiate games and is already a vital component of Michigan’s success
In the four games Hage went pointless and two he missed with an injury he’s been nursing most of the season
The Wolverines are 10-1-1 when Hage finds the scoresheet
but he wants the puck on his stick,” Wolverines coach Brandon Naurato said
He’s not dominating yet and that’s the next step
and what a luxury to have that opportunity and that trust
Michigan is accustomed to having high-end talent
the Wolverines had four players taken in the first and second rounds of the NHL draft
There’s a lot of pressure on him to perform
He’s an elite distributor through the middle of the ice
and he’s been through a lot as a young man.”
Hage came into this season wanting to make an impact despite the new challenging environment
“I’ve gotten comfortable very quickly to a different game because it is a lot more difficult than last year,” Hage said
“I don’t ever plan to come into one season the same player I was last year
so I feel like I got a lot better over the course of the summer
In his final game before the holiday break on Dec
Michigan was coming off three straight shutout losses
The game one night earlier against Wisconsin had been easily the most frustrating Hage had experienced at this level
With a loose puck near the side boards in the Michigan zone
Hage tried to lift a Wisconsin player’s stick and head up ice with the puck instead of engaging in a puck battle
so I just have to go out and try to make a play.”
Overtime game winner from Michael Hage! pic.twitter.com/bCsT8hYOhr
— Michigan Hockey (@umichhockey) December 15, 2024
But what was most interesting was Hage’s assessment on the tying goal
The real mistake happened long before: He shouldn’t have been on the ice at all
“I probably should have changed before that
“That’s when you make dumb mistakes like that
There’s the hockey IQ Naurato was talking about
Naurato enjoys the cerebral nature of how Hage views the game
his true observations and not just saying what he thinks Naurato wants to hear
“He’s a fun one to work with because he’s a hockey nerd
“It’s underappreciated and very rewarding for a coach to work with a young man that when you tell him something
If there’s still any doubt about just how much this family loves the Canadiens
Saba and her parents visited the Canadiens boutique at the team’s practice facility in Brossard
She picked up a couple of hooded sweatshirts
key chains and other merchandise for her sons
“It was really funny because the guy working in the store recognized us,” Saba recalled
The thought of attending Hage’s first game at the Bell Centre one day immediately puts a smile on Saba’s face
She estimates they would need roughly 60 tickets
“We would need a whole section to make it work.”
Hage doesn’t know how much time his mother has left for planning
“It’s one year at a time until I think I’m ready
I just feel like there’s not really a rush,” Hage said when asked when he believes he will turn pro
“You see so many guys rush out of juniors and college and then come to realize how hard the NHL is
and as soon as I feel ready physically and mentally to go make an impact and the team thinks I can make an impact
Hage’s friends and family at the Bell Centre will witness the ultimate triumph out of tragedy together
I’m sure he’s having a hockey party in heaven with his dad

The next competitors sat three strokes back at 18-under.

4vs1Minnesota State
-- A strong rebound effort led the seventh-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team to a season-opening split after defeating Minnesota State 4-1 on Saturday evening (Oct
Freshman Cameron Korpi earned his first career start for Michigan
native took full advantage of the opportunity
turning aside 24 of 25 shots to start his tenure on a positive note
Hage continued his torrid start by netting his first collegiate goal at 11:48 with a quick shot that was in and out of the net by the time the celebrations began
The play was created in transition off the sticks of Moldenhauer and freshman defender Dakoda Rhéaume-Mullen
Hage had factored in on Michigan's first four goals of the season
both teams had put nine shots on goal while the Wolverines led at the faceoff dot winning 13 of 21 draws
The second period came and went without either team getting on the scoreboard
despite both teams each having a pair of power-play opportunities
Minnesota State halved the deficit with a goal that made it 2-1
Minnesota State pulled its goaltender with a bit over one minute left in regulation in search of a game-tying goal, but the Wolverines buried on the empty net instead to ice the game at 3-1 with 41 seconds left when Josh Eernisse notched his first goal of the year
The visitors emptied their net for a second time and before time expired, Tyler Duke sent a lob from the defensive zone that found its way into the back of the net fractions of a second before the final buzzer sounded
While the teams mobbed their goaltenders and prepared for the handshake line
the officials gathered in the penalty box to confirm the unassisted goal that made it 4-1
The Wolverines owned the faceoff dot once again (33-26)
but the Mavericks did outshoot the home team 25-18
the Wolverines hit the road for another non-conference series against Arizona State
The series opener will be streamed live on NCHC.tv
A vivid history of the American Prairie and an urgent call to understand and protect this natural wonder
which rivals the rainforest in its biological diversity and
The North American prairie is an ecological marvel
One cubic yard of prairie sod contains so many organisms that it rivals the tropical rainforest for biological diversity
it showcases nature’s prodigious talent for symbiosis
The lush carpet of grasses feeds a huge population of grazing animals and is home to some of the nation’s most iconic creatures–bison
These creatures return the favor by spreading nitrogen and seeds across the prairie in their manure
and the grazers in turn feed prairie predators
they return their store of organic matter to the living soil
When European settlers encountered the prairie nearly 200 years ago
rather than recognizing a natural wonder they saw a daunting landscape of root-tangled soil
But with the development of the steel plow
in mere decades they converted the prairie into some of the richest farmland on Earth—a transformation unprecedented in human history
American farmers fed the industrial revolution and made North America a breadbasket for the world
but their progress came at a terrible cost: the forced dislocation of indigenous peoples
as these trends build toward an environmental crisis
industrial agriculture has resumed its assault on the prairie
plowing up the remaining grasslands at the rate of one million acres a year
Farmers have an opportunity to protect this extraordinary landscape
but trying new ideas can mean ruin in a business with razor-thin margins and will require help from Washington
and from consumers who care about the land that feeds them
Veteran journalists and Midwesterners Dave Hage and Josephine Marcotty follow the history of humanity’s relationship with this incredible land
compassionate analysis of the difficult decisions as well as opportunities facing agricultural and Indigenous communities
Sea of Grass is a vivid portrait of one of the world’s most miraculous and significant ecosystems

2vs1Western Michigan
– A raucous holiday weekend home crowd helped the sixth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team knock off the seventh-ranked Western Michigan University Broncos by a score of 2-1 on Saturday evening (Nov
the Wolverines beat their NCHC opponents from Kalamazoo to the 10-win mark
Freshman Cameron Korpi started in the blue paint for the Wolverines
and the Michigander stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced from a familiar WMU lineup to earn a critical win for the Wolverines as they salvaged a non-conference split after Friday night's loss at Lawson Arena
Western Michigan appeared to strike first at 6:37 off a bang-bang play
The first power play of the night was awarded to the Broncos at 8:58 when T.J. Hughes was banished for roughing
the alternate captain exited the box and rejoined play following a successful penalty kill
Twenty-five seconds after Michigan began its first power play of the evening, Jacob Truscott was whistled for tripping to even play at 4x4
The U-M penalty killers moved to 2-for-2 on the night by denying the opportunity
Michigan carried a 1-0 lead and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal up the stairs to the dressing room
U-M also held a 9-7 lead in the faceoff dot through 20 minutes
Early in the second, Michigan doubled its lead when Michael Hage broke out a fly route to skate into a high flip from Jackson Hallum
The freshman corralled the puck before outlasting the goalie and tucking the puck into the net
Truscott collected the secondary assist for securing possession and propelling the puck toward Hallum
who had just enough space to flip the puck high into the offensive zone to send Hage on the breakaway for his ninth goal of the year
On the following shift, Philippe Lapointe was called for slashing to give WMU a third power-play chance
Michigan's penalty killers stymied the opportunity
Michigan's power play was reactivated with 2:52 remaining in the second period when Josh Eernisse drew a penalty for hooking
The unit dropped to 0-for-2 after sustaining time in Western's zone but failing to produce shots on goal
With time ticking down, Tyler Duke wheeled around U-M's net with the puck on his stick in hopes of skating out the clock until intermission
as they took a late penalty for high-sticking with 3.4 seconds left in the frame when a stick lift attempt caught a healthy piece of Duke's facemask
With one period left in the season's non-conference slate
Michigan owned a 2-0 lead as they headed into the second intermission
The Wolverines held a commanding 19-9 lead in shots on goal in addition to a 22-13 advantage in the faceoff dot
Fresh ice failed to create a goal for the Michigan power play
as the advantage came and went without incident in the opening minutes of the third period
Western later took a turn of their own on the power play at 2:42 when Eernisse was called for interference on a reverse hit in anticipation of a play along the boards
A bit over halfway into the ensuing WMU advantage
Hallum used his speed to draw a tripping penalty while shorthanded to create 49 seconds of 4x4 play before an abbreviated power play could begin
play carried on at full strength with the score still 2-0 in Michigan's favor
The Broncos emptied their net with two and a half minutes left in regulation
still searching for their first marker of the contest
Michigan quickly challenged the play in hopes that it was offside
and the teams embarked upon the final two minutes with the deficit trimmed to one goal
Strong goaltending and a stout defensive effort led Michigan to close out the one-goal victory and clinch a split in the weekend series
Michigan's 2-1 win over a strong WMU team was powered by a 30-18 advantage in shots on goal as well as a strong effort in the faceoff circle (31-27)
The penalty kill was excellent for the Wolverines
as they held Western to 0-for-4 with the extra skater to help ensure a victory
With a one-goal victory in hand following the 124th all-time rendition of the rivalry along I-94
Michigan's lead in the series now stands at 40 games (77-37-10)
This weekend also marked the culmination of non-conference action for the Wolverines this season
as they finish with a 6-3-1 record against top-tier competition
Michigan heads west next weekend to resume B1G play with a two-game series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday and Saturday (Dec
while the second contest will commence at 5:00 p.m
Friday night's game will be broadcast live on FS1
while Saturday's will be streamed live on B1G+

4vs2Notre Dame
-- Looking to extend a recent run of success over their rivals to the southwest
the seventh-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team scored in the first minute and never looked back as they defeated 20th-ranked Notre Dame 4-2 on Saturday evening (Nov
Michael Hage opened the scoring just 41 seconds into the game with a laser of a shot from the top of the left circle that found twine to give Michigan an early lead. Both of his linemates, Evan Werner and Nick Moldenhauer
assisted on the freshman's fifth goal of the year that set the tone for the Saturday sweep opportunity
Werner doubled the lead at 2:08 when his shot from near the goal line deflected off of a UND defender on the far side of the crease and trickled across the goal line. Moldenhauer notched his second assist of the period after receiving a breakout pass from freshman blueliner Will Felicio
whose secondary assist went down as his first collegiate point
Michigan carried the play for much of the period
leading 16-5 in shots on goal until UND halved the deficit with a goal at 16:44 that made it a 2-1 game
Michigan's checking line reclaimed the team's two-goal lead and made it 3-1 at the six-minute mark of the second period off a marker from Thomas Daskas
The veteran forward participated in cycling the puck around the Irish zone before finding an opportunity to shoot the puck and ultimately notch his first goal as a Wolverine when the puck deflected off the webbing of the goaltender's glove
Notre Dame struck back with a goal in transition to make it 3-2
The first half of the final period was clunky at times as each side searched for the all-important next goal with each earning a man-advantage opportunity
With an empty cage with 1:36 left in regulation, Notre Dame searched for a game-tying goal. After taking their timeout with 39 seconds left, UND failed to regain possession in the Michigan zone. Ultimately, Philippe Lapointe was able to chip the puck down the ice toward the empty net following a battle in the neutral zone
With the shot losing momentum as it slid through the UND end
Hallum beat the Irish in a race to the puck before depositing it into the net to put the finishing touches on a 4-2 win for Michigan
U-M locked up a two-game sweep over Notre Dame to kick off Big Ten play
Michigan's win was backed by a 34-29 advantage in shots on goal
with Korpi turning aside 27 shots in his third win
Michigan's victory bumped their lead in the series to 92-70-6
Michigan's active win streak over the Irish has now ballooned to seven games -- the longest in the series since U-M won eight straight over the Fighting Irish from 2004 to 2005 during the CCHA days
The Wolverines will have a bye next weekend before hitting the road for a series at Penn State
start with Saturday's start time to be determined

he'll need another season with us (Michigan)
He still has to learn how to play against players who are his size
