The Hagen History Center is partnering with the Wilds Sonshine Factory (WSF)
the world's only sunflower distillery
to plant over 1.2 million sunflower blooms.
“We partnered with the Wilds Sonshine Factory to plant one of the largest sunflower fields in the tristate area between the Battles Yellow House and White House on Walnut Street in Girard,” said Caleb Pifer
executive director of the Hagen History Center
“Planting begins the week of May 12
the History Center has managed the Battles estate in Girard
which includes two farmhouses and 120 acres of land.
The Hagen History Center has been restoring both houses
The Yellow House has been completely refurbished and has been open for annual membership meetings
the second floor is a fully equipped AirBnB
The History Center is currently restoring the White House
The White House will be open in June during special events.
“We started planting sunflowers on our own in 2023 and held picnics and dinners among the flowers
but when we heard about the Wilds Sonshine Factory
we invested in a collaboration that will create a unique experience for tourists with a blend of agriculture
history and community-based events – all to enhance the Girard economy,” Pifer said
“Our farmer Jim Neuburger expects that 1.2 million sunflowers will bloom this summer.”
the History Center will harvest the seeds and transfer them to the WSF where they will be distilled into vodka and whiskey
which will be available for sale locally in multiple flavors

Undergraduate School and Degree: BSB Economics
Where was the last place you worked before enrolling in business school
with my final assignment as a Battalion Tactical Officer at the United States Military Academy at West Point
where I was responsible for developing and mentoring over 300 cadets in academic
and military affairs ensuring they were prepared to lead as future Army officers
Where did you intern during the summer of 2024
I worked with Direct Supply as a strategy development intern in Milwaukee
Where will you be working after graduation
I’ll be working at Avient as an operations specialist as part of their LDP in Avon Lake
Community Work and Leadership Roles in Business School:
Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school
I completed the Dances-With-Dirt Gnaw Bone 50km Ultramarathon in Brown County
The training and preparation took nearly all my spring semester
What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career
I had the privilege of serving our country in Syria as a Green Beret
I was one of two Executive Officers in theatre responsible for creating and maintaining the logistical support systems supporting A-Teams in the Battle of Raqqah and Operation INHERENT RESOLVE
Knowing that the systems I built allowed our teams to move faster
come home safely is something I carry with me every day
It reinforced my belief that behind every mission is a well-laid foundation of disciplined operations
and mutual trust which all continue to guide me today
Kelley’s Academies were one of the most unique aspects of the program that provided tremendous return on networking and exposure to the business world
I knew I needed an opportunity to absorb as much of the ‘real-world’ as possible in such a short time
and the Academies provided that opportunity
the Supply Chain and Digital Enterprises Academy allowed me to apply what I was learning in class and see it in action with companies across the country
My favorite professor has been Eric McDermott
He taught our “Predictive Analytics in Business Strategy” class
I think he did an incredible job distilling such a challenging subject as causal inference with preciseness and specificity
There are things that about correlation and causal effects from that class which I will never forget as a future business leader
I really loved “Asset Valuation” with Andrew Ellul
Beyond just learning the formulas and function of different asset pricing models
we really dove into the drivers and philosophies of capital markets at large and explored the interconnectedness of market pricing and the greater economy
What was your favorite MBA event or tradition at your business school
This has been a great year for Hoosier Football
and our MBA Tailgates were the best place to celebrate their record season
I’m a diehard Hoosier Football fan for life now
what is the one thing you’d do differently and why
I was very concerned about the outcomes of my prospective careers following graduation
But as I met leaders and mentors in the corporate world
the one lesson they imparted on me was to be concerned with what I wanted to do with my time and talents
I could have arbitrarily closed some doors to some great opportunities if all I had been chasing was the benefits
I am grateful to have had mentors and peers alike help me find the value that I brought to a team and find opportunities that aligned with those talents
What is the biggest myth about your school
I always share with prospective applicants that having your MBA does not entitle you to a great career
You can’t simply believe that getting accepted into business school is the endgame
You must show up and put in the work – academically
and personally – to get the outcome that you want
No one will care about your career as much as you do
and opportunities will not just fall into your lap because you are an MBA student
The best of my peers put in countless hours preparing and refining their stories
defining the value they bring to an organization
and building your network with meaningful connections
What did you love most about your business school’s town
There’s quite a bit of great outdoor activities just minutes from school and where I live in Bloomington
Whether it’s running the trails throughout the Brown County State Park
or even just running up & down the B-line that cuts right through Bloomington
there’s always a reason to get out of the house and classroom to get some fresh air
House of Lies) best reflects the realities of business and what did you learn from it
but I liked The Founder with Michael Keaton
The Founder is a movie that really captures the ups and downs of running a business
It shows how Ray Kroc turned McDonald’s from a small restaurant into a global giant
But it also shows how business can be a tricky thing
where ambition can get in the way of doing what’s right
I learned that while it’s important to be successful and grow
it’s just as important to be honest and do what’s right in the long run
What is one way that your business school has integrated AI into your programming
it’s been encouraging to see AI help explain more clearly certain challenging concepts
and the instructors at Kelley go above and beyond to help students better understand ideas and concepts
our creativity comes to an end and it’s difficult to imagine an example where a particular example can be applied and practice
I think to my time understanding the cause and effects of asset and equity pricing
Being presented through AI with a different perspective on the idea helped me internalize the mathematics and really comprehend the intuition
but what I appreciate most is how he can communicate any idea and make it easily understandable
where he shared such a unique perspective and insight that helped me challenge how I looked at problems and potential solutions
He’s an incredibly considerate individual and I’m glad to have shared time with him while at Kelley
What are the top two items on your professional bucket list
I hope to sit on the board of a non-profit that supports transitioning veterans and helps families develop their network and professional skills to succeed
The other thing I’d like to do is publish a research paper on analytics and predictive modeling
exploring how data-driven insights can drive better decision-making in business and operations
I want to bridge theory with real-world applications
I’d like to contribute meaningful insights that not only advance thought but also impact the industry
What made Nick Hagen such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2025
“As president of the Kelley MBA Veterans Club
fostering a strong sense of community and support among his fellow veterans
His dedication and ability to bring people together ensured that veterans felt both welcomed and empowered throughout their academic journeys
Nick has sought out additional opportunities to support prospective student veterans
often taking time to speak with them one on one or being sure they are connected to others
In addition to his role with the Veterans Club
Nick also served as co-chair of the Hoosier Host student ambassadors
playing a key part in representing the program to prospective students
facilitating both on-campus and virtual events
Despite balancing the demands of a rigorous MBA program and family life with his wife and two children
Nick consistently demonstrated an impressive level of commitment
His ability to manage multiple responsibilities with grace and determination speaks volumes about his character and work ethic
and has undoubtedly been an asset to the Kelley School of Business.”

I'm back by popular request. My "Bouillabaisse" report seems to be a success
one with a futility I prefer to compare to Sabrina Carpenter's pop hit 'Espresso' - a fun song that is clubbed to death on the radio and in five years time few will play it ever again
Funnily readers often prefer to find out what I eat and which wine I drink over my grand views on how to save dressage sport for the future
I'll try to do these "blog reports" a bit more often
You'll get my impressions on the competition in a diary style article
It all depends on my motivation and energy level
Whippet trying to catch a bee by his noseAfter I wrapped up last night's "blog report" on my first day of competition at the 2025 CDI Hagen round 1h45 AM
I went to bed and still played on my phone until at least 2h45
I had to do the mandatory Eurodressage social media posts and like a true face-hugger phone addict required a hit of at least 30 minutes of senseless Reels-doom-scrolling before I reached realisation point that I wasted another half an hour of my life polluting my brain with SoMe nonsense
I always do a little test: "which reel did you see in the last three hours that is worth remembering
I'm usually able to name just one out of the 250 I've seen: a person saving an abadoned puppy from the street gutter
Or a delivery guy caught on Ring cam running away from an aggressive dog
As soon as I closed my phone I fell asleep after having been awake for 22 hours
Ringside laughter: Michael and Rebecca Klimke sharing a laugh with Ulf MöllerWhen I checked into my hotel Thursday evening the hotelier kindly mentioned that there was no breakfast available this weekend
I'm not a big breakfast person as I require two cappuccinos not to feel hungry until lunch time
I normally have to bridge a gap of three hours with no food before lunch as I start the work day at 9 AM instead of when the rooster cock-a-doodle-doos at 7 AM or earlier
At horse shows life is different and wake-up time is usually either 6 and 7 AM
My Iphone alarm clock is always a surprise: it can either be a soothing symphonic wake-up tune or a brain crushing beep-beep-beep
This morning I woke up to violin strings but quickly realised I didn't have enough sleep for my age
but totally dry so there was no complaining from my part
I wondered how muddy the parking field would be
but it was tolerable and I parked my car at exactly the same spot as yesterday
so I could slide my way out of there again
I briskly walked to the dressage area where I got my first essential cappuccino of the day in the tent: a caffeine kick required to be full focus on the Grand Prix for Special 4* competition which started at 9 AM
Future generations come to watchThere were only 11 pairs in the Grand Prix for Special 4*
a historic low for Horses and Dreams that usually serves as a magnet to bring out Germany's best and attract a bunch of European riders dying to compete at the glorious Hof Kasselmann
We are living in strange times with shows begging for entries
Some are packed with 40 combinations per class
other CDI's can't even field 40 entries in total from pony level to Grand Prix
In the USA some CDI's are thrilled they have even 15 pairs showing up
The FEI removed its "date clash" clause during COVID and never re-instated it
So now too many shows take place on the same date
An additional factor that needs to be considered is that a bunch of riders avoid competing internationally due to the current animal welfare debate
I have spoken to plenty of international dressage riders
but choose not to pay at least 2000 euro for a weekend of CDI competition to get another 65% score and run the risk of getting videoed by an animal welfarist who will stigmatise him/her as an abuser on social media because the mouth was open
This year in Hagen there were 25 combinations in the CDI 4* and 24 in the 3* (49 in total)
Last year in the 2024 Olympic year (which always does better so maybe it's not the right comparison)
there were 27 in the 3* and 39 in the 4* (total 66)
Rothenberger and Fendi never made it onto the German team as the young Grand Prix pair was not resilient to the pressure at the German team selection trial at the 2023 CDIO Aachen and in 2024 it was from the frying pan into the fire with scores dropping
Although once hailed as the most talented Grand Prix horse in Germany
the past year Fendi could not live up to the expectations and the whisper was "Fendi has lost it" (meaning the ability to score high)
In each test mistakes crept in and the piaffe and passage no longer looked as promising and impressive as they once did in 2022
would have been at least a 74.826% a year ago ;) As third last to go in the class
the pair lacked polish and could easily have scored more
but only did four rein back steps instead of five (score 6.5)
The second trot extension barely had overtrack and the first piaffe was laboured
The extended walk needed more stretch over the back
even though one to two hooves overstep were achieved
the passage was gorgeous but not always even
and the piaffe at X was the best one of the three
and Hans-Christian Matthiesen were not entirely in unison as they scored the pair between 70.435% and 74.891%
Susan Pape on GiulilantaThe most effortless ride with the best bridle contact came from British born German based Susan Pape (née Draper) aboard Harmony sporthorses' 14-year old KWPN mare Giulilanta (by Jazz x Flemmingh)
The pair came fresh off a season competing in Wellington
and showed their best form in months on European soil in Hagen
Although the trot extensions were a bit hurried and lacking in ground cover
all the other Grand Prix work looked so solid and smooth
The mare has really gelled with its rider over the years and today they looked at ease with each other
They scored a well earned 71.217% for second place
Ingrid Klimke and the 14-year old Westfalian gelding Vayron (by Vitalis x Gloster) were the penultimate pair to go and looked like they were cruising to victory until mistakes started to happen
easy trot extensions and there was much ground cover in the half passes but the hindquarters almost led to the forehand
the first piaffe was carefully ridden but on the forehand and narrow behind
The extended walk had good relaxation and marching
There was a break in the rhythm in the second piaffe and in the strike-off to canter the croup came high
the passage work had improved considerably with more straightness in the body
Vayron did an unscripted flying change in the extended canter and there was some loss of balance in the zig zag
the pirouettes almost felt like slow motion
Nuno Palma e Santos on Fortunity SOne of the horses that showed the most improvement overall was the 10-year old Hanoverian gelding Fortunity S (by Franziskus x Weltmeyer) under Portuguese Nuno Palma e Santos
The chestnut is a mega Grand prix horse with fabulous piaffe-passage
I was immediately thinking this horse needs more relaxation exercises
there is only one rider left in the world riding in beige breeches and that's Nuno (after Sven Rothenberger hung up his tails in 2005)
After the Grand Prix class I meandered across the show grounds
first watching Jessica von Bredow-Werndl school Times Kismet
I landed near the show jumping arena where I had a small piece of lasagne while watching - to my surprise - American Young Rider Kat Fuqua compete in show jumping on a rather heavy duty course with a super grey jumper
Klöker and Fairmont won the Amateur PSG KurThree hours followed of killing time
Instead of keeping momentum by scheduling the Louisdor Cup qualifier right after the Grand Prix 4* there was a major lull in the programme with an amateur Prix St Georges kur to music right after noon
but I felt my inspiration and drive vaporizing as the overcast sky made way for a few rays of sunshine
scouted for nice ring-side portraits and had a brief sit down at the No Concept clothes store
which after many years of no longer having a booth a dressage shows
but Maike Schlummer and her friend Michel Wantia were there with all their flair
A brief respite from boredom came when the Oldenburg breed society and KWPN had their live presentation of the foal collection of the elite foal auction that was going to take place in the jumper stadium in the evening
It was fun to see the babies of dressage strut their stuff in the arena and immediately took a liking to the colt Valentino AVE (by Sarai L) and filly Etoile Princiere (by Extreme US)
It was no so surprise they later became the price highlights of the auction
One of the most anticipated classes of the weekend was the Louisdor Cup qualifier
which is also less than last year (28 in 2024) but more than in the years before (15 in 2023 - 19 in 2022)
There were plenty of ringing names on the entry list
and it was no surprise that the ringside seats got filled and droves of people stood in between the warm-up and the competition ring
The sun now came out to cast some special light onto the Louisdor horses
no less than four were directly sired by the Swedish Olympic team stallion: the winner of the class (Dante's Pearl)
the third placed horse (Deltana) as well as Danestos (Manuel Springhetti) and Dantiamo (Lisa Müller)
And let's not forget Patrik Kittel's Dante's Herzchen that competed in the 3* tour
and Malgorzata Pawlowska and it felt like they slightly fell back into old habits being favourable to "famous riders" who were more leniently judged that the majority
Also watching the tack inspection after the test was more than fascinating
As the Louisdor Cup is a national class it falls under German Equestrian federation regulations and to my observation the tack check seemed more a formality than a serious matter
I saw the steward check the tightness of noseband by barely even touching the noseband
in most cases by putting the tip of the finger against it
From my viewpoint there was no pressure applied to see if the noseband could even be lifted off the side of the face
I saw that in a millisecond the tightness was "looked" upon
not even touched (not the flank of the horse)
different standard for different circumstances
I also saw two horses very irregular in the rhythm in the trot extensions (one in the 4*
one in the Louisdor) but they were not rung out
Schurmann on Dante's Pearl"The world is your oyster" Shakespeare's expression goes and in the Louisdor cup warm-up round the winner was Dante's Pearl
a 10-year old Oldenburg mare by Dante Weltino x San Amour which Hof Kasselmann sold as a youngster to former Swiss youth rider Caroline Marie Scheufele
After having briefly ridden the mare herself
Scheufele returned her to Germany for Charlott-Maria Schürmann to produce her up the levels
This black beauty finished 6th in the 2024 Nurnberger Burgpokal Finals for developing PSG horses and now made the leap into the developing Grand Prix horse class
but was clearly more elastic in the half passes to the right than to the left
but she only showed very few steps of piaffe
In the extended walk she appeared short-long in front and the rhythm was mediocre (6.8 score)
The medium canter with flying change at X was lovely and the mare showcased good ability to sit in the pirouettes
the passage on the final centerline could have been slightly more collected
She scored a whopping 75.237% for the victory although the spread between the judges was rather big: 72.500% as low score and 76.579% as high score
The chestnut is very well trained by Gräf and Werndl immediately reaped the fruits of that work
As first pair to go in the class they held the lead for a long time until Dante's Pearl's ride
The horse was very submissive and willing to do the work
the piaffes were slightly on the forehand and he could drop more in the hindquarters
There were nice uphill strides in the extended canter
the extended walk had a two hooves overtrack and a clear V-moment in the rhythm
There was a miscommunication in the left pirouette
The contact was soft and elastic at all times
Frederic Wandres on DeltanaGerman Olympic team gold medal winner Frederic Wandres rode two horses in the Louisdor class and placed third aboard Elizabeth Morrell's 10-year old Hanoverian mare Deltana (by Dante Weltino x Charon)
The muscled black mare is a talented horse but still quite green in the Grand Prix work
Today the hindlegs were too far out in the passage and in the piaffe she needed quite a bit of motivation from the rider to pick up her legs
In the pirouettes she showed good ability to sit and the two tempi changes were very ground covering and impressive
Deltana relied heavily on the piloting and experience of her rider and it all could and should look lighter and more fluent
They scored 72.605% for a third place; riding on home turf seemed to have played to their advantage
The judges had marks between 70.658% and 74.079%
A wonderful ride was produced by Juliane Brunkhorst and the 9-year old Diamante Negro (by DeLorean x Furst Romancier)
The pair won last year's Nurnberger Burgpokal qualifier in Hagen and now proved readiness in the Louisdor Cup qualifier
Although in general the horse looked more convexed on the left and concave on the right
the horse produced very nice piaffe and passage work
He could have marched more in the extended walk and was hesitant in the right pirouette
but he swayed a bit in the hindquarters in the passage on the final centerline
He scored 72.421% for fourth place with marks between 69.737% and 74.737%
Juliane Brunkhorst on Diamante NegroLeonie Richter and the 9-year old licensed Rhinelander breeding stallion Lord Europe (by Lord Leatherdale x Boston) completed the top five
Lord Europe has only been lightly competed over the years
In Germany he debuted in 2022 under Julian Fetzer and has been in Richter's career since the spring of 2023
He already sold to Dicso last year but the sale was kept quiet and Richter retained the ride
The black stallion is impressive to look at: handsome
tall and he has plenty of scope in his gaits
but he has a right hind leg rotating outwards in his movement mechanism The right trot half passes were more elastic than the left ones and in passage and piaffe the hindlegs stayed too far out at this point in his training
He ground his teeth and curled himself in the extended walk instead of marching over the back into the contact
There was a lovely flying change at X in the medium canter
The ones were much straighter than the twos
The downward transition to trot went via walk and there was a break in the final trot extension
The pair was last to go and that played to their benefit as their 71.026% score was more than generous
Jessica von Bredow-Werndl premiered the 10-year old Danish warmblood Got It BB (by Grand Galaxy Win x Don Schufro) at his first major premier league competition after having done some small shows in south Germany and Austria. Owned by Beatrice Burchler-Keller the bay stallion was bought at Andreas Helgstrand's in Denmark five years ago
the canter work was soft-footed with nice pirouettes and good two tempi changes
In the piaffe he leaned too much on the shoulders and the first passage lacked collection but improved throughout the test
There was a mistake in the ones and in the extended walk he got slow and a bit peacocky
As soon as the Louisdor prize giving ceremony was finished I hurried back to the car to make my way to the hotel
I did wonder why I didn't stick around and socialized more with people
but I came to Hagen alone and my social safety-net colleagues hadn't come along to hang out with
So I felt more comfortable relying on my routine of going to the hotel and work
This one came back with a vengeanceIn my hotel room I first posted the scores of the CDI's in Ypaja
Gossendorf and Golega before going downstairs to fully master eating a big hamburger and sweet potato fries
wrote this article and wondered why I just can't be concise and to the point
it turns out to be a long winded excursion with too many details and too much information
and I haven't even begun organizing and preparing the photos for this piece
I'm going to be burning the midnight oil once again..
The article was ready but not the photos and I got too tired
Two hours into my sleep the reckoning came
My body punished me for eating greasy crap food two days in a row and woke me up
I fell back asleep in seconds and felt much better
aware that I missed the first group of the Intermediaire I
but decided that rounding up this article had priority

Southpaw Spring Breakout: White Sox future on display with Schultz
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- If all goes as planned for the White Sox, left-handers Hagen Smith and Noah Schultz won’t spend much time following each other to the mound in a single game
much like they were doing in two Cactus League appearances while in big league camp
working two hitless innings and striking out one
while Schultz went hitless through the third and fourth with two strikeouts
It was Schultz who took the mound first in those Cactus League contests
who threw 17 of his 30 pitches for strikes
“It’s cool to pitch on the same day as him.”
who fired 16 of his 22 pitches in the zone
Smith topped out at 96 mph and recorded four swings and misses
Schultz hit 95.7 mph while incorporating six pitches
generating four swings and misses among his work
This pairing of the game’s top two left-handed pitching prospects, per Pipeline, might not end in Spring Training, as Schultz, Smith and right-hander Grant Taylor, the White Sox No. 7 prospect who did not pitch Sunday
could be part of the same rotation in Double-A Birmingham to open the 2025 season
It’s their next collective step toward the Majors
“Today was a good start for us,” Schultz said of the White Sox system as a whole
“It’s just great the bonds we have together on and off the field
Meet the MontgomerysThey aren't related despite sharing the same last name, but shortstop Colson Montgomery (MLB's No. 39 overall prospect) and center fielder Braden Montgomery (No. 54 overall) showed off similar top-notch glove work Sunday
Colson took a hit away from Adael Amador to open the fourth by ranging into the hole between third base and shortstop
then throwing across his body on the jump to make a perfect throw to first baseman Tim Elko
Braden saved a big inning in the fifth by making a diving catch on Bryant Betancourt’s line drive
“I actually thought I was kind of late jumping to it,” Colson said of his play
“I had a good angle to the ball and I knew he was a pretty decent runner
so kind of just threw it over in the general direction

Basepath massWith two outs in the fifth inning
Elko was hit on the hand by a Jack Mahoney pitch
but then quickly made his way to third on George Wolkow’s single to center
It’s the White Sox version of the jumbo package on the basepaths
Wolkow flew out to left fielder Sterlin Thompson at the wall to end the third inning
and his single registered a 114.8 mph exit velocity
“Both of them are extremely large males,” said a smiling Colson
who he played with for the first time on Sunday
Bullish on BergollaWho is William Bergolla
For openers, he’s the Minor League infielder acquired from the Phillies in exchange for left-handed reliever Tanner Banks at the 2024 Trade Deadline
He’s also one of the slightly under-the-radar White Sox prospects to watch
according to director of player development Paul Janish
“I don’t know if this is a total sleeper,” Janish said of Chicago's No. 16 prospect
“But he’s got a really unique defensive ability and skillset in a premium position.”
making a slick fielding play and then flipping the ball to first base with his glove to nail Drew Romo
while showing seemingly effortless cool while applying the tag on stolen-base attempts at second
He’s already one of the better defensive infielders in the system
To understand how the string quartet became such a core genre of classical music
it helps to go back to its country of origin
and the composer who launched it on its brilliant career
The Salzburg-based Hagen Quartet served a generous helping of Haydn at the 92nd St
along with a young upstart named Robert Schumann
in what was billed as their last New York appearance
(The Hagens have announced the quartet will retire after next season.)
which was formed 43 years ago by four Salzburger siblings and continues as three siblings and a friend
is advantaged in this repertoire by both genetics and geography
and it showed in the polish and insight of their playing
The publication of three quartets as Haydn’s Op
54 in 1788 found the composer at about the midpoint of his development of the genre
as the first violin’s leading role was giving ground to the independent voices of its three partners.
first fiddler Lukas Hagen often sparkled with rapid scales and filigree and a silvery cantabile
but the other three—second violinist Rainer Schmidt
violist Veronika Hagen and cellist Clemens Hagen—also had plenty to say about it
in the zesty Allegro con brio that opens the Quartet Op
Lukas’s lively theme was driven by a drumbeat of repeated notes in Clemens’s cello
and the development featured an explosion of fast passages for all four players
the hesitant progress of the ensuing Allegretto had all four players seemingly breathing together as they shaped the brief phrases
the Menuetto could hardly have been more different in character
as the first violin dropped out and the other three players continued on in a gentler mood
The entire ensemble displayed virtuosity in the Presto finale’s fast scales and wittily toyed with its two-note upbeat
Bowing together in impeccably tuned chords at the beginning of the Quartet in E major
the Hagens revealed the rich yet transparent sonority that helped make the quartet the king of chamber genres
the swirling tendrils of sixteenth notes sprouted easily from the movement’s long lines
The Largo cantabile stepped along in a slow four-to-a-bar under the first violin’s ornate soprano solo; the ensemble subtly maintained the feeling of a steady pulse through the movement’s many pauses
The vigorous Menuetto was driven by Scotch-snap rhythms and emphatic unison passages
only slightly softened in the minor-key trio
Haydn the tease returned in the Presto finale
and the most brilliant violin writing of the night
The smooth Salzburgers carried it off without a hair out of place
he assigned himself a rigorous course of study in the fugues of Bach and the quartets of Haydn and Mozart
The three quartets from that summer blended his new skills in counterpoint with a Romantic sensibility that loved jokes and a fine tune
3 opened with a Haydn-style hesitant introduction
but soon the first violin was spinning out a graceful melody over a throbbing
A sighing two-note motive echoed throughout the texture
A version of that motive also headed the theme of the ensuing Assai agitato
The Adagio molto brought back the song composer
now imaginatively using the quartet medium in smooth tutti phrases
and singing sweetly over pizzicato accompaniment
The Rondo finale danced in a dotted rhythm and hit folk-style offbeat accents in a way that seemed to anticipate Dvořák
The group smartly articulated a scampering episode and kept the dotted beat going through whimsical excursions by the first violin
until a flurry of triplets brought the movement to a brisk close
to which the group responded with an encore
then full-throated performance of the Andante cantabile from Mozart’s Quartet in G major

Smith and Taylor starting season in Double-A ballMarch 26th
CHICAGO -- There have been the Three Amigos
the longtime famous Three Stooges and now .
the three top White Sox pitching prospects working together at Double-A Birmingham
Taylor, who was equally as impressive as Schultz and Smith during their first Major League camps, is the No. 7 White Sox prospect.
“We can all agree that we're excited about the prospect of those guys
obviously continuing their development at the Minor League level
getting used to pitching every fifth day,” said Janish during an afternoon Zoom
“But really ultimately looking forward to being able to tell the story about how those guys were all in the same Double-A rotation in a couple of years when hopefully they're Major League All-Stars.”
Infielders Colson Montgomery, the No. 39 prospect overall, and Chase Meidroth, the No. 8 White Sox prospect
who made it to the final week roster cuts of Spring Training
will be part of Triple-A Charlotte’s infield
Montgomery will get the bulk of work at shortstop
“He's going to be able to be a little bit of everything
But he'll pretty much stay ready for anything that may happen.”
“We've talked about this a lot,” said Janish of Teel and Quero
“The catching position is very demanding at the Major League level
but they're both really close to being ready to perform hopefully
who's catching and the other one's DH-ing in a lot of cases
Not to say that they're going to DH every game they don't catch
They're likely to split the catching three and three [per week] assuming health and get a good amount of the DH time as well.”
Quite a few interesting prospects exist across the White Sox sixth-ranked system
it’s tough to top the three big-time young pitchers
“Hopefully just them deciding that they want to be better than the other one
right?” said Janish of his expectations for Schultz and Smith
We're going to work really hard to help them stay healthy
The rapport that they develop during the next period of time when they're playing together as teammates in Double-A is going to pay itself forward down the road
hopefully at the Major League level as well
“Just to highlight the type of people that they are
they're the type of guys that we need to do our job to give them the best chance for success currently but also getting to the big leagues and have success
They're the types of guys that we feel can really have impact off the mound as well
with the next round of pitchers that are going to come and being able to be good examples of how we do it
South Siders unveil their vaunted southpawsSchultz
Smith each pitch a scoreless inning in Cactus League debutFebruary 27th
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith walked together from Camelback Ranch’s stadium field to the White Sox facilities in the eighth inning of a 3-1 loss to the Padres on Wednesday afternoon
Schultz, ranked by MLB Pipeline as baseball’s No. 16 prospect overall, threw a scoreless fifth inning and needed just eight pitches, of which six were strikes. Smith, the No. 34 prospect
followed with a scoreless sixth and struck out three to strand a runner who reached third base with no outs
They have thrown their sides and live batting practice sessions on the same days during camp
They talked in the bullpen Wednesday about their respective Cactus League debuts
Has the theme of “together” been hammered home enough at this point for the game’s top two left-handed pitching prospects
so close in age and everything,” said the 21-year-old Schulz
“I don’t have a brother; I have two sisters
It’s nice to be able to do everything and have a little buddy with me
I got to see a little of it; I was in the bullpen
grandmother and grandfather were in attendance
Schultz also mentioned his travel ball coach for many years with the Cangelosi Sparks
lives in the area and came to see him take the mound
After going through his warmups in the fifth inning
He was quickly erased when Niko Goodrum grounded into a double play
with a great start from shortstop Jacob Amaya
Mason McCoy flied out on a 2-1 pitch to end the brief appearance
Schultz topped out at 98.4 mph on his sinker
and averaged 97.3 on the four sinkers he threw
The important thing is to put up a zero and help contribute to the team,” Schultz said
“I feel like there’s stuff to work on every time you step out on the mound
but there’s always something to improve on for the next time
Said bench coach Walker McKinven: “Watching Noah Schultz go about his business is an awesome thing to see
‘Oh my gosh this is a very very impressive young player.’ Really
McKinven heaped the same praise upon Smith
who has comported himself as a total pro in his first professional Spring Training
Smith fell behind at 2-0 against Forrest Wall to open his inning before giving up a single
A throwing error from left fielder Wilfred Veras sent Wall to second
with Wall swiping third on the 0-2 offering
Connor Joe then struck out to end the scoring threat
yelling into his glove as he approached the dugout
Starting 2-0 on Wall and not making the proper play on the stolen base bothered him the most
“That was just dumb,” Smith said of the stolen base
after throwing 13 of his 23 pitches for strikes and topping out at 98.2 mph on his four-searmer
but I have to get out there next time and do better.”
The Cactus League debuts are out of the way
featuring a number of memories and even a few jitters
But there should be a number of more important accomplishments arriving soon for these talented lefties
and they both have electric stuff,” catcher Kyle Teel said
I don’t know what it’s going to be like to hit this guy.’ I haven’t faced him in lives
but I can’t imagine it’s a comfortable at-bat
in addition to being these crazy talented players
So I’ve had a great time getting to know these guys and just observing them.”

The White Sox are pinning high hopes on their latest first round draft pick, southpaw Hagen Smith. Selected fifth overall in the 2024 MLB draft
the lefty comes to the organization with quite an impressive baseball pedigree
Smith quickly became one of the top arms in the system (MLB’s No
3) and is recognized as the second-best lefthander in the minors by MLB Pipeline (overall No
The 21-year-old spent three years pitching for the University of Arkansas, where he quickly established himself as one of the best pitchers in the SEC, arguably the most dominant conference in college baseball
His career there was marked by an exceptional ability to generate strikeouts
so much so that Smith left the program as their all-time career strikeout leader (360)
He earned various accolades during his last year as a Razorback
including the 2024 National Pitcher of the Year and the SEC Pitcher of the Year
Smith features a funky delivery of a four-seam fastball that sits around 94-97 mph
his best pitch is a devastating 83-87 mph slider that paralyzes lefties with its horizontal and vertical action
He compliments both of those 65-grade pitches with an average splitter
which he’s still working on controlling consistently
Smith started his professional career at High-A Winston-Salem
he went 0-1 in three starts with a 3.52 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with two walks and seven strikeouts over 7 2⁄3 innings
Chicago invited the lefty to Spring Training this year
and he was impressive in his first two appearances: Three innings of shutout ball
surrendering only one hit while walking three and striking out four
but he demonstrated grit on the mound with the ability to pitch out of a few jams

The road to the big leagues is never guaranteed
but Smith seems to have all the tools and the temperament to succeed
As he progresses through the White Sox minor league system
the focus should be on his development and not a rush to the South Side
have handled fellow lefthander Noah Schultz
they will have the same approach with Smith
Word out of camp is that Smith will likely start with Double-A Birmingham
but don’t rule out a late-season call-up to Chicago

Smith wow in first live bullpenFebruary 16th
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It was just the first live bullpen session for southpaws Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith, the top two left-handed pitching prospects in the game according to MLB Pipeline
taking place Sunday afternoon on the back fields of the White Sox Camelback Ranch facilities
Tim Elko and Oscar Colás in a controlled environment
But there’s a reason so many White Sox front office people and coaches left smiling after they were done: This tandem is just that talented
they are certainly a little ways removed from the Major Leagues
but watching them in action provides some sense of a more hopeful future
It was a good day,” White Sox manager Will Venable said
And of course Hagen and Noah looked great as well
I think that was my fourth time throwing live,” Smith said
“I’ve been working the curveball a lot,” Smith said
“A slower breaking ball so if people are hunting slider I can throw something slower and get them off-balance a little bit
I’m ready to get back out there for a full year.”
Schultz, the No. 16 prospect overall
and on one pitch from the 6-foot-9 21-year-old
It’s an exclamation following Schultz throughout two impressive years in the Minors and probably will be heard again when he makes his Cactus League debut on Feb
the focus for all our guys in Spring Training is building the foundation and the routine that’s going to carry them throughout the season,” Venable said
“And the things we need to do in the training room
Those things are going to be important for all of us and those guys especially as they are continuing to develop.”

After a successful professional soccer career
Sarah Hagen has returned as the head coach of the Appleton North girls' soccer team

Wiser’s Wramblings-Wrambling about Wramblings
who allowed two runs over three innings before Schultz and Smith tossed for the White Sox
Which young pitcher was Pérez talking about
upped the ante to two scoreless innings each against Milwaukee after they each hurled a scoreless inning on Feb
26 against the Padres in their Cactus League debuts
as Schultz threw 16 of his 32 pitches for strikes
An Eric Haase double play grounder came in between two walks for Schultz in the fourth
while Smith was aided by a sixth-inning line drive double play off the bat of Manuel Margot
"[Catcher Edgar Quero] called that," said a smiling Smith
"I was flying a little open but corrected it between innings
who threw nine of his first 12 pitches out of the zone
"I'm confident in myself every time I go out on the mound."
Schultz topped out at 95.2 mph on his sinker
which was down a bit from his 98.4 mph high mark in that first outing
But Schultz pointed out Wednesday's velocity was where he worked so effectively for most of the 2024 season with High-A Winston Salem and Double-A Birmingham
Smith's highest velocity was 96.2 mph while recording two of his three swings and misses on the slider
He wasn't satisfied with that first outing
in part because he fell behind in the count on a couple of occasions
and that level of perfectionism bothered him again on Wednesday
I was trying to go with more fastball command
I was kind of frustrated with that last time
Manager Will Venable has yet to name the White Sox Opening Day starter among Jonathan Cannon
Davis Martin and Pérez for the game against the Angels on March 27 at Rate Field
But Pérez wasn't campaigning for the honor after his outing
"I'm not here for a competition with my teammates or something like that
Whoever gets that chance for the first game
I will be happy for them and support them."
College Baseball, MLB Draft, Prospects – Baseball America
No one should predict the White Sox will be a competitive MLB team in 2025. And it’s fair to wonder if 2026 will be bleak as well considering the depths to which they fell last year
the team’s future was on full display
and for the first time in a while it looks quite promising
It’s hard not to notice the difference between Chicago’s 2025 Spring Breakout roster and last year’s version
The 2024 roster never got a chance to take the field because a rainstorm washed out their game
The best of the 2024 White Sox breakout roster was largely either years away from Chicago
or close to the majors but ticketed as likely role players in best-case scenarios
Chicago’s Spring Breakout game was played on a 70-degree sunny day
and it was well worth paying attention to the roster
the White Sox starting lineup was peppered with prospects who project as potential big league regulars
This year’s lineup isn’t the best of the Breakout rosters (the Red Sox and Rays can battle for that distinction)
but the difference from one year ago is notable
Shortstop Colson Montgomery struggled at Triple-A last year
but the 23-year-old remains a safe bet to start somewhere in Chicago’s infield in the next year or so
whether it’s shortstop or second or third base
Center fielder Braden Montgomery is the team’s best outfield prospect in years, and should get to Chicago by 2026. Left fielder George Wolkow is the epitome of risky
And on the bench were intriguing prospects worth paying attention to like shortstop Caleb Bonemer, outfielder Samuel Zavala and infielder Jeral Perez
“We’ve got a bunch of guys that I think are going to have an opportunity to play in the big leagues
We’re trying to make sure that when they get there
they’re ready to be there,” farm director Paul Janish said
“From an ability standpoint there are some options that we’re excited about.”
And then there’s the pitching. Starting pitcher and 2024 first-rounder Hagen Smith is one of the best pitching prospects in the game. He was followed by an even better prospect in 6-foot-10 lefty Noah Schultz
as he grew another inch during the offseason
The fact that Schultz is young enough to still be growing is a reminder of just how unique he is
Here’s a massive 21-year-old with an unusual arm slot
massive extension and the kind of control rarely seen in a youngster with limbs this long
to be able to control the baseball and throw as many strikes as he does is unique,” Janish said
He was never allowed to work into the fifth inning and never topped 75 pitches. The White Sox will continue to be careful
the plan is to let him prepare for a big league starter’s workload
“Hopefully he can just be a normal pitcher this year,” Janish said
“That’s the goal for this year is for him to pitch every fifth day
Obviously we’re going to pay close attention to workload
but at the end of the day he’s a normal pitcher
Go out there and pitch without the governor on there.”
The duo combined for four scoreless innings in Sunday’s game
The White Sox are still a long way from turning around a club that not only had one of the worst records in MLB history last year
but did so with a roster that largely won’t be around the next time they’re flirting with a .500 record
it’s reasonable to think that the worst is behind them

It should have been a day for the White Sox big pitching stars of the future (we had hoped) to strut their stuff against two weak-hitting teams
Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith could barely get their pitches somewhere between first and third base
though they did get those Spring Training reappearances
Smith went 2 1⁄3 innings thanks to the second chance
walking five and giving up three hits and six runs
since a half-dozen relievers took his cue and walked another seven and even added a hit batsman
Seattle (with the worst record in the Cactus League) chalked up 14 runs
The White Sox actually tied the game at one in the second on a Lenyn Sosa single
but then left the bases loaded and didn’t bother to score again
against lowly Colorado (which is having a good spring)
Schultz matched Smith’s five walks in just 1 1⁄3 innings in two stints
though he only allowed one hit and was tagged for only three runs
It took seven relievers to add another six walks in that one
which they accomplished even though the Rockies didn’t have to bat in the ninth
They included a wild pitch run on their tab
the Sox actually got the score to just down 3-2 on a Bobby Dalbec double in the fourth
The other run came on an Andre Lipcius single
a gift score since Bryan Ramos had been wild-pitched around to third
Rubber Ducky (a reference for you Convoy fans)
it should be pointed out they did have one 1-2-3 inning in each game
There’s usually a break in the report verbiage at some point to show highlights
but to provide alleged highlight videos of these debacles would invite a lightning strike
Add those debacles to the confirmation Drew Thorpe will have TJS and Brandon Drury has a broken thumb
and predicting 121 losses won’t be topped this year seems a case of cock-eyed optimism (a reference for you South Pacific fans)
The White Sox are now 10-18-1 for the spring (plus 0-1 in the Breakout game) with two exhibitions to go before it all goes on their permanent record beginning Thursday
