Words:  Adam Whittaker The sustainable project is already creating waves with professional surfers WhiteWater, a leading waterpark manufacturer is celebrating the groundbreaking of its latest Endless Surf Pool project representatives were present at the project site to share ideas and discuss the plans Since the project was officially revealed to the public last year it has received media attention as Europe’s largest surf pool now accompanied by visualisations from Munich architects Maisch Wolf Architekten SURFTOWN MUC CEO Chris Boehm says: “We are thrilled and proud to get closer each day to our dream of surfing near Munich. My sincere thanks go to the municipality of Hallbergmoos, which has accepted the challenges of our forward-thinking project with remarkable pioneering spirit.”  marks the major milestone by adding: “For the municipality SURFTOWN MUC is a historic opportunity that everyone can benefit from we have done our best to ensure that this extraordinary project can be realised in our town Once again we are proving that Hallbergmoos is capable of courageous and forward-thinking steps.” The organically shaped surf lagoon is powered by Endless Surf technology with this installation being 180 meters long The model is designed to be flexible in terms of operating configurations and customisable wave production producing a ‘peeling wave’ along its length resulting in a 20-second ride for surfers.  Chief Surfing Officer Michi Mohr says: “At the core of all our planning is the unique surfing experience which should provide visitors – from absolute novices to Olympians – a safe environment for everything that makes this sport such a passion And that includes an innovative surf school and coaching concept for beginners in addition to a relaxed and cool ambience and additional outdoor sports facilities.” The surrounding buildings continue the water theme with a design reflective of a breaking wave. SURFTOWN MUC will provide a facility where professionals, as well as the public, can look forward to a visit with vast recreational value. With a flexible wave height design from 30cm to 2.5 meters SURFTOWN MUC is even suitable for International Championships WhiteWater and Endless Surf president Paul Chutter says: “Bringing customisable waves to an already vibrant surf community surrounding the Eisbach River will surely solidify Munich as a surfing hub for Germany and beyond “We are incredibly honoured to contribute to this rich surf culture alongside the dynamic team behind SURFTOWN MUC This moment marks a huge milestone for us all and we can’t wait to start rolling out Endless Surf waves in Munich.” A self-imposed objective to use climate-neutral and sustainable concepts has ensured that the development used time-consuming approaches to respond with innovative answers The surfing facility is largely self-sufficient with 90 per cent of its energy sourced from on-property and adjacent photovoltaic systems The remaining 10 per cent will be generated by local grid green electricity The facility’s water supply will not use valuable potable (drinking) water instead using local groundwater which will come from Hallbergmoos’ swampy topography A dedicated filter and circulating water system will be engaged to further minimise unnecessary consumption Visitors will be encouraged to use public transport e-scooters and bicycles as much as possible incentivised by a bonus scheme and electronic charging in parking spaces WhiteWater has recently announced a new look for another of its surfing brands, FlowRider, which has undergone a fresh rebrand in time for the summer season Get the latest attractions industry The construction of SURFTOWN MUC was announced to the public last year as Europe’s largest surf pool the developers have consistently forged the project ahead finding solutions for the structural and technical requirements in close cooperation with the responsible authorities the self-imposed goal to realize climate-neutral and sustainable concepts required time-consuming approaches and innovative answers celebrates their official groundbreaking with representatives present from the political Situated close to the Munich Airport at Lilienthalstrasse 12 in Hallbergmoos the world-class surf park facility is slated to test operations in late 2023 and officially open to the public in the spring of 2024 “We are thrilled and proud to get closer each day to our dream of surfing near Munich” “My sincere thanks go to the municipality of Hallbergmoos which has accepted the challenges of our forward-thinking project with remarkable pioneering spirit we have done our best to ensure that this extraordinary project can be realized in our town for the first time the team from SURFTOWN® MUC showcases the concrete visualizations of the project designed by Munich’s architects “Maisch Wolf Architekten” The organically shaped surf lagoon by Endless Surf technology is 180 meters long and is incredibly flexible when it comes to operating configurations and customizable wave production Endless Surf can produce a “peeling wave” along its entire length The design of the surrounding buildings picks up the water theme with a reminiscent of the shape of a breaking wave The overall result is a facility where athletes as well as the general public can look forward to a visit with high recreational value: an outdoor fitness area a children’s playground and the beach area with many facilities to lay down and relax In combination with a contemporary gastronomic concept the complex is intended to convey the special surfing lifestyle that is so attractive for many people The idea of the developers of SURFTOWN MUC is also to create a meeting place for the region: from onlookers to employees on their lunch break from young surfing talents to families and children who want to spend an extraordinary day outdoors Even International Championships can take place at SURFTOWN MUC thanks to the flexible wave design with heights from 30cm to 2.5 meters “At the core of all our planning is the unique surfing experience which should provide visitors – from absolute novices to Olympians – a safe environment for everything that makes this sport such a passion,” says Chief Surfing Officer Michi Mohr “And that includes an innovative surf school and coaching concept for beginners In order to serve the various dimensions of sustainability and social factors were considered for the conception of SURFTOWN MUC The overall goal is to make the facility climate-neutral and to focus on renewable energy and water-saving measures: Innovative technologies also characterize the wave generator that will be used in SURFTOWN MUC and forms the heart of the surf park The artificial waves by Endless Surf are created by a pneumatic chamber system that converts pressure into wave energy This technologically sophisticated system is provided by attractions industry leading Canadian company WhiteWater for the first time in the world at SURFTOWN MUC It can roll out fully customizable peeling waves up to more than two meters in height with a time interval of about ten seconds along the entire length of the pool “Bringing customizable waves to an already vibrant surf community surrounding the Eisbach River will surely solidify Munich as a surfing hub for Germany and beyond We’re incredibly honored to contribute to this rich surf culture alongside the dynamic team behind SURFTOWN MUC all and we can’t wait to start rolling out Endless Surf waves in Munich” said Paul Chutter President of WhiteWater’s European Region team located in Munich speaks highly of the project in saying “The vision for SURFTOWN MUC is revolutionary This is undoubtedly a world-class surf park in the making and we are thrilled to bring it to life and add to Munich’s growing reputation of being a European powerhouse for action sports with our European regional team local to Munich we’ve got quite a bit of hometown pride for this one.” the project developer Rock Capital Group is building the HYBRID ONE lifestyle quarter retail as well as ultra-modern and flexible office and laboratory space The goal: to redefine leisure and work on 30,000 square meters This portion of the development is scheduled for a 2025 completion while waves at SURFTOWN MUC will already be pumping Sign up to be alerted when the latest Amusement Today issue is published via our Digital Edition and progress but OCCAR must focus on the prototype while avoiding pressure to revert back to design Representatives from participating nations in the manufacture of the future ‘Eurodrone’ gathered in Hallbergmoos Bavaria in late February for their first board meeting since the project launched two years ago Hosted by the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (abbreviated ‘OCCAR’ in French) the project manager overseeing platform development stipulated the latest acheivements and progress in the development process Italian and Spanish (and Japan as an observer state) consortium will engage with sovereign industry partners to deliver a uniquely European Medium Altitude Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (MALE RPAS) the programme was followed by various design reviews including a Definition Study that defined common requirements between France The subsequent two years were fully devoted to negotiating a global contract with Airbus Defence and Space GmbH as prime contractor Leonardo and Dassault Aviation as major subcontractors production and initial in-service support for 20 systems the partners completed successful preliminary and critical design reviews we can expect the manufacture of the first prototype to commence this year Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis OCCAR also stipulates that the Eurodrone will serve as an uncrewed collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) system within the trilateral Future Combat Air System (FCAS) This alternative programme will see France Germany and Spain build a ‘system of systems’ with a sixth-generation fighter jet at the centre of a network-centric and enter service for the first time in 2028 Eurodrone partners will contribute to a user ecosystem in which all participants pool resources for availability and sustainment purposes This timeline was set before the Covid-19 pandemic and remains unchanged since the contract validation in 2020 it may be hard to differentiate between Covid knock-down production delays and other reasons such as poor co-ordination explained that Eurodrone comprises “a dual engine MALE which makes it very different from the US Reaper and Predator models “The two-engine design seems to have been very controversial during the development because it increases unit weight and costs Germany is responsible for that design demand due to their plan to use it for urban missions and the failure of a single engine would lead to a crash in a highly populated area is planning for missions in Saharan Africa where low population density means this was not a concern “More engines will mean more weight but more powerful thrust and will likely mean the Eurodrone can carry more and heavier weapons since the maiden flight is now scheduled for 2025 In January 2023, a smaller German subcontractor, Hensoldt, gained a €15m ($16.2m) contract from the German Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment Information Technology and In-Service Support to develop sensor technology that can be integrated into a pod demonstrator to provide singal intelligence for the German Eurodrone configuration which can be used for reconnaissance of radio and radar signals is based on several of the latest technologies electronic beam steering and metallic 3D printing This constitutes a highly specific configuration change that will diverge from other user systems This instance of divergence may not be the last As Europe’s infamously efficient programme manager OCCAR will need to prevent national specification changes amid the manufacturing phase Even though the programme has already met its critical design specifications several years ago and is now due to begin building the prototype participating member states may have new ideas for their systems in the past two years since the contract was formalised “This is the first time in history we are seeing large scale drone use in conflict by peer nations.” Jones agreed that OCCAR will need to withstand pressure of design alterations: “I’d say almost certainly although I would say the Ukraine conflict would be the more pertinent reason “This is the first time in history we are seeing large scale drone use in conflict by peer nations The US drone campaign [in Afghanistan] was in circumstances of total air supremacy Ukraine and Russia are both losing hundreds of drones of various types.” participating members will doubtless have learned their own lessons from the war in Eastern Europe “But I would guess something to ensure survivability Some kind of countermeasures to keep the Eurodrone flying if someone is trying to take it down Give your business an edge with our leading industry insights View all newsletters from across the GlobalData Media
