In Harrislee, a suburb of Flensburg in northern Germany
Das Wahlversprechen ('The Election Promise') captures attention
Created by Bernd Maro and unveiled in 1994
this whimsical bronze ensemble features eight figures
Their exaggerated gestures and farcical expressions critique the empty promises of election campaigns
transforming the public space into a stage of theatrical mockery
untouched by the doubt and skepticism of the guffawing adults around them
highlighting the trust and innocence often eroded by political disillusionment and the harsh realities of adulthood
They serve as a silent reminder of the hope beyond the cynical world of electoral promises
Maro’s creation symbolizes the community’s critical eye and willingness to engage in dialogue
urging politicians to reconsider their commitments
This installation reminds us of the people's power and the importance of a transparent civic spirit
the piece suggests that sometimes the best way to address politics is to laugh first and ask questions later
fostering a more thoughtful and engaged society
‘Das Wahlversprechen’ is located in the market square in the Flensburg suburb of Harrislee near the Danish border
buses run frequently from the Flensburg bus terminal to Harrislee

BREAKING NEWS: Former Campus Choir director arrested Monday
After a historic multi-sport career at Walker Valley High School
Lady Flame Laney Harris is used to putting on a show in Bradley County
Harris is in her third year on the softball team at Lee
but played softball and basketball for the “Lady Mustangs” of Walker Valley High School in her prep career
She’s been around the Lee softball program from an early age — Harris remembers attending softball camps on campus
“I went to every camp that I could,” Harris told the Lee Clarion
“I wanted to stay close to home so I knew Lee would be a great fit for me.”
Lady Flames’ head coach Emily Russell remembers
This kid is gonna be really good,” Russell said
I knew about her from a really young age.”
Harris is in her junior year with the Lady Flames — in her career
her 0.280 batting average is one of the best in the conference in that time frame
but her hard work proves her actions speak louder than her words
and so I think that is why she has been so successful,” Russell said
Harris has helped out in recruiting and making the softball program more appealing to future recruits in the community
Harris knows how rare it is to play college softball in front of your own family in your hometown
“Every game I look up into the stands and see my family up there
I know not a lot of people get this opportunity to stay at home and have their family at every game
Russell points to Harris’ community connections as a way of growing the softball program
“Laney is a great ambassador for our program
She's well connected in the community and I think she's really pushed our brand forward in the community,” Russell said
Russell’s sentiments are echoed in the locker room
“[On the field,] Laney is a steady individual and never lets anything get in the way of her passion for the sport
Laney is a great friend and someone to count on.”
Harris had a career high of 31 runs scored
placing her in the top 10 in the conference
as an education major she has also been putting the work in the classroom
being named to the Gulf South Conference Honor Roll in 2021 and 2022

Foundation is partly the story of a mathematician called Hari Seldon
who has invented a science called "psychohistory" which can predict the future for large-scale human concerns (so not whether you'll meet a mysterious stranger
but definitely whether civilisation will survive the next millennium)
Sheldon sees that the Galactic Empire in which he lives is going to collapse
and that there will be a period of barbarism lasting 30,000 years
with the help of psychohistory and a planet called Foundation filled with experts in sciences and philosophy from all over the Empire
that barbaric age can be reduced to 1,000 years
was set up to hold the psychohistorians themselves in isolation
while further adventures revolve around the development of the plan
Harris will be Seldon, while Pace is playing Brother Day, the current emperor of the galaxy. David S. Goyer is currently the main showrunner for the series, after Josh Friedman left earlier this year
There's no word on when the Foundation series will premiere

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By John Corrigan | jcorrigan@al.comHUNTSVILLE, Alabama--As the daughter of Harris Lee Parcus
nicknamed the "Godfather of North Alabama," Tonia Parcus Rhude lived and breathed hustle
and civic service up to her final breath on Aug
Her daughter Telia Norg recalls her mother
juggling three jobs because she "refused to live off the system." She worked in the food stamp office during the day
and tended bar at night at The River Club--her father's joint in Triana
"He was the biggest moonshiner in the area," Norg said
Parcus struggled to make money so he opened a little store called Triana Grocery where he could sell alcohol
His business soon blossomed into a high stakes gambling and bootlegging empire with "10,000 gallons of moonshine a month" infiltrating dry counties throughout North Alabama and even McNairy County
Tennessee during Sheriff Buford Pusser's administration
but my grandfather still delivered to his county," Norg said
"One of the guys involved in Pusser's shooting hid out at my grandfather's house until my grandfather found out what he had done and made him leave."
Norg said all of these experiences were supposed to be included in her mother's book
"The Moonshiner's Daughter." However
her 11-year battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
which makes breathing increasingly difficult over time
your oxygen is in the 90s and CO2 is in the 30s," Norg explained
"Hers reversed as her oxygen dropped to the 40s and her CO2 rose as high as 190
She should have been medically dead years ago."
And judging by the nearly 300 mourners at her funeral
the people of Madison and Triana loved her for it
Rhude grew up in Madison until she was 6 when her mother remarried
this time with a man who worked for Boeing in California
She returned to Madison every summer at the very piece of property Norg's family lives now
"He wrecked his sixth car so my grandfather sent him with his grandmother
So my grandmother decided to move back to Madison," Norg said
Rhude went to a party on the now-closed Mather Air Force Base in Rancho-Cordova
She was a candy striper on the base so she had access and met a 21-year-old soldier
I'm sure it was great," Norg said
"So she got mad and hooked up with the man who would become my father
And it was weird because it was my mom's first time."
When Rhude and her family returned to Madison
Her father thought she had married the soldier because she didn't want to tell him the truth
she was told her grandmother had it annulled
Only eight years ago did she finally meet her father through WhitePages.com
"He answered all my questions and then asked what my dad's name was," Norg recalled
and doing everything on two feet,'" Norg laughed
Norg visited with her father several times before he and Rhude would meet again
"My mother was so nervous," Norg said
he's already seen you naked.'"
While her father served time in federal prison for conspiracy
An 18-year-old named Charles Ray Nix was kicked out one week
he shot at a crowd consisting of her brother and cousin
Her brother pushed his cousin out of the way and a bullet caught him in the back
was only 27 and left behind two 4-year-old daughters
"My mother would go to the pardon hearing every year," Norg said
She even went on The Mark Walberg Show in the mid-90s to fight against Nix's pleas for a pardon
"Every time Nix would say his felony charge prevented him from making a living
my mother would say her brother can't make a living because you killed him."
Rhude poured drinks at the Hickory House and Lisa's Lounge in Huntsville
She owned the Nashville Lounge and Tonia's Place in Leighton
She worked for an insurance agency for 15 years in Atlanta
She proudly served as a court applied juvenile advocate
striving to reunite foster children with their parents
And she finally retired as a magistrate from the Town of Triana in 2003
"My mother knew everything going on in that town," Norg said
they had a white cop and he was kind of racist
So he was pulling people over left and right
"She butted heads with the mayor and chief of police a lot," Norg added
"She did her own thing and would give you the shirt off her back."
She was so hyped up from her daily cocktail of B-12 shots
that she would get on her electric scooter at 6 a.m.
cruising up and down the driveway while talking on the phone with no pants
"I don't know how the bath lady did it
But she would make my mom her last visit of the day because she loved spending as much time with her as possible."
Rhude's house used to be a nightclub run by her father
"She wrote her own obituary," Norg said
"It starts off with 'Tonia Parcus Rhude left this world at her home in Madison' because she was determined to die in her house and not at the hospital."
When Norg told her she'll probably tear down the foundation and start over after her mother passed

Company says the move is part of its plans for vertical integration.
The Faroese fishing company Christian i Grotinum bought Larsen Danish Seafood out of administration, the company told IntraFish.
"We signed the contract with the insolvency administrator last night," Jan Petersen, CFO of Christian i Grotinum, said.
Petersen said the company has been looking for a way to add value to its raw material for some time.
"We have been looking to find some was of creating more value out of the quota that we have," Petersen said. "And we have tried to find the solution through canning or somehow creating more value."

newspaper 'The Telegraph' is being widely mocked after claiming Kamala Harris prepped for Tuesday's presidential debate with legendary acting coach Lee Strasberg—except that Strasberg died in 1982
Alan is a writer and editor who lives in New York City
His work has been featured in such publications as Salon
newspaper The Telegraph was called out after claiming Vice President Kamala Harris prepped for last night's presidential debate with legendary acting coach Lee Strasberg—except that Strasberg died in 1982
According to The Washington Post, Harris spent four days immersed in an intensive “debate camp” at Pittsburgh’s Omni William Penn Hotel
enlisted an experienced Trump stand-in to deliver harsh attacks and inflammatory remarks
and subjected the Vice President to hours of rehearsed questions
None of that could have possibly involved Strasberg
actor and acting teacher who is considered "the father of method acting in America," an at times controversial acting technique employed most famously by actor Marlon Brando and later taken up by performers as varied as Al Pacino and Daniel Day-Lewis
in a piece that mentioned the GOP's hopes that Trump could evoke Ronald Reagan's 1980 debate performance
The reference to Strasberg has been removed from the article
which highlighted Trump’s complaints about Harris’s ties to a prominent executive at ABC
Joshua Benton, founder of Harvard’s Nieman Lab, pointed out that the reporter probably sourced the name from a New York Times piece describing “an adviser in full Lee Strasberg method-acting mode
While we certainly can't ask Strasberg—best known to moviegoers for his performance as Hyman Roth in The Godfather Part II—for his thoughts about the matter
if he did manage to rise from the dead to do what The Telegraph claimed
it'd be the greatest method acting performance of all time
Critics called out the Trump administration for running its own propaganda network after the White House publicized "White House Wire," its own news website that features news articles from conservative news outlets like the Daily Caller and Fox News
The White House Wire (WHWIRE) primarily features positive coverage of the president and administration
with stories mainly sourced from conservative outlets and contributions from government staffers
"100 Days Of Hoaxes: Cutting Through The Fake News," was notable but did not include a direct link to a story
The website resembles the Drudge Report
a well-known political site that functions as a bulletin board for links
While the Drudge Report was initially a conservative-friendly platform
famous for breaking the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal in the 1990s
it has become critical of Trump in recent years
Nonetheless, the administration bragged that the White House "has its own wire now" in a post via its official X account
When questioned about the website, a White House official explained that there's a method behind the administration's madness:
But others have called out the White House for launching what they say amounts to little more than a propaganda arm
The development follows a press briefing held by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt
who addressed what she referred to as the “new media,” stating that she was honoring a commitment made at the start of the Trump administration to engage with “all media outlets.”
However, as she acknowledged at the beginning of Monday’s briefing—which she referred to as the "influencer briefing"—these sessions largely serve to allow softball questions and applause lines from MAGA loyalists eager to play reporter in the White House
True to her approach with the “new media” seat in standard White House briefings
which has been filled predominantly by right-wing figures
Leavitt filled the influencer room with Trump-friendly provocateurs and YouTubers

My thumbs up behind his back immediately became a thumbs down
but then I learned he didn’t understand it
He would just fill in random numbers and 'try to make it work.' When I tried to explain the rules
he said it was too complicated and he preferred his own way of playing."

Some of these stories are just an ad for celibate living
President Donald Trump was criticized for his response to concerns about empty store shelves due to his tariffs
suggesting that children will just have to settle for "two dolls instead of 30," and that those dolls might cost more than they used to
U.S. businesses are already canceling orders from China and delaying expansion plans as they brace for the fallout from Trump’s trade policies
Trump has disrupted the global economy by imposing steep import taxes—often announcing them abruptly
then modifying or suspending them just as suddenly
China has been hit with a staggering 145% rate
despite being one of America's largest trading partners
with nearly $439 billion in goods imported from China in 2024
The new tariffs are expected to trigger major shortages for both businesses and consumers
Online retailers like Temu have already responded with price increases and now show “import charges” at checkout
highlighting the tariff impact—sometimes doubling the original cost of an item
This means many will have to go without—not that that bothers Trump
You can hear what he said in the video below
The sharp drop in goods coming from China—one of America’s largest trading partners—hasn’t hit most U.S. consumers yet, but that’s expected to change soon
thousands of businesses will need to restock
and major retailers like Walmart and Target have warned Trump that customers could soon face empty shelves and rising prices
could face “COVID-like” shortages and widespread layoffs across sectors such as trucking
Although Trump has recently signaled some flexibility on tariffs
experts say it may be too late to prevent a supply shock that could ripple through the economy into the holiday season
Even if tensions ease, restarting transpacific trade carries its own risks: the freight industry has downsized to reflect lower demand, so a sudden surge in orders could overwhelm shipping networks, leading to costly delays—much like the chaos seen during the pandemic when container prices soared and ports were clogged with cargo ships

Republicans vow to not cut Social Security and Medicaid benefits
they try to cut Social Security and Medicaid
supporters of the GOP are shocked every time it happens
Endeavoring to once again educate the electorate, New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez( AOC) pointed out Republicans' penchant for breaking promises during a meeting to discuss the budget by the House Energy and Commerce Committee
Republicans are making empty promises that Medicaid won't be touched —then turning around and trying to cut $880B from Medicaid recipients across the country
They're saying "take our word." I say show us the bill
I introduced an amendment to expose the devastating impact these “non-cuts” would have
Highlighting Republican promises already broken
AOC—as she's come to be called since being elected to Congress in 2019—addressed her committee colleagues and members of the gallery over the GOP's refusal to add an amendment to their budget proposal which includes $880 billion in cuts to the Medicaid budget
They claim their funding cuts are all going to involve the undefined, undisclosed "waste" identified by Elon Musk's Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
But AOC declared she's heard that song before
She then referred to comments made by Musk and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr
Republicans pointed to prior oversight plans
People agreed with her distrust of Republican promises
Democrats asked Republicans to put their promise in writing and add an amendment establishing none of those cuts will be to benefits
After President Donald Trump declared that former President Joe Biden is to blame for for current stock market performance—saying "this is Biden's stock market
not Trump's" in a rant on Truth Social—people quickly fact-checked him for previously taking credit for the stock market when Biden was in office
economy contracted by 0.3% in the first quarter of Trump’s second term
a sharp contrast to the 2.4% GDP growth recorded during Joe Biden’s final quarter in office
Economists warn the decline could signal a looming recession
especially as Trump presses forward with aggressive tariffs that risk driving up prices
Despite the downturn occurring under his leadership
Trump declined to accept even "one tiny
itsy-bitsy" bit of responsibility in a post on Truth Social ahead of the market’s open
But compare those words to what Trump wrote in January 2024
Trump was defensive when questioned by a reporter about not taking credit for the stock market now that it is "not doing so well":
When Biden was in office, Trump infamously said he hoped the stock market would crash "in the next 12 months" because he doesn't want "to be Herbert Hoover," aiming to distance himself from the responsibility of managing a troubled economy:
Trump stands as the sole modern president who
jobs compared to the start of his presidency
The global COVID-19 pandemic
which Trump belatedly acknowledged and frequently downplayed or denied during its progression
The robust job market he anticipated to secure him a second term was obliterated
In January 2021, just before the conclusion of Trump's term, the Labor Department disclosed that total U.S
