Leeds United’s pre-season camp in Germany was a covert operation
Its secret nature was driven by necessity rather than preference
courtesy of some head-scratching decision made by the German authorities
Far away from fans in West Yorkshire, Daniel Farke’s squad spent the past nine days at Hotel-Residence Klosterpforte — situated in the town of Harsewinkel on the outskirts of Bielefeld in the west of the country — locked into a period of hard work as they prepare for the new Championship season
with the team’s location kept about as well under wraps as anyone can keep anything away from the detectives in the United fanbase
were made available for supporters to attend on the instructions of German police stretched too thin in the wake of Euro 2024
It seems a fair request if you skate over the fact that Coventry City, Rangers and Aston Villa will play games in front of fans in Germany this summer
as well as the fact that Leeds worked extensively to provide ways around the shut-out only to hit a brick wall
A case of one rule for some and another for Leeds
not that it will have stopped the most optimistic travellers from making the trip anyway
there was still plenty of work done by Farke’s team and much learned from the camp and the two victories against Bundesliga 2 promotion hopefuls

The hotel Leeds used as their base is an old favourite of Farke’s
who also used it while boss at Norwich City
FIFA-accredited training facilities built for the 2006 World Cup
Being back in his homeland also allowed the United manager to spend time with his family as his son watched training early in the week
There was not much time for lingering on the part of the players
with sessions in the heat having put them through their paces straight off the back of the 3-0 win over Harrogate Town
it held great promise for the new campaign with Hannover and Schalke both brushed aside in 4-1 and 2-0 wins
There was no return to the three-at-the-back system tested by Farke against Harrogate
Leeds' return to the 'smiley' badge on their new away kit: The treasure hunt and the history
could have a fringe role for the season ahead barring further recruits at the back

Farke was not shy in joining in with workouts as players took part in their gym sessions while Summerville and Willy Gnonto got into the Olympic spirit early with a bit of shadow boxing
Banter between players was not in short supply
A go-karting trip seemed just reward for some intense sessions on the pitch
After securing Bogle’s signature, the Leeds transfer team is continuing its work, having had a bid for Koln midfielder Dejan Ljubicic knocked back
At around €4million (£3.4m; $4.3m) with 12 months left on the 26-year-old’s contract
it remains to be seen if United will go back again for the Austrian international
Multiple bids were needed to bag Bogle — Farke wants at least another midfielder and another full-back for his squad
Safely back in the UK after a valuable and more settled period together than Farke was afforded in a summer of change this time last year, the focus turns to the final friendly of pre-season when Valencia visit Elland Road at the weekend
at least in person — there are plenty of videos
photos and interviews online — could yet prove to be the most important nine days of this squad’s journey together
with additions still to be made and if they can get off to a good start early doors

Arvato Supply Chain Solutions is expanding Harsewinkel
Germany into its leading healthcare location in Europe
a new multi-client-capable shuttle warehouse with picking system has now been put into operation at the North Rhine-Westphalia site
which in the future will enable the products of a total of 25 customers from the pharmaceutical and medical technology industry to be shipped even more efficiently and quickly to hospitals
Arvato is using the new shuttle solution to drive forward the automation strategy for its global sites
“The healthcare market is currently being shaped by the trend toward more and more direct deliveries from pharmaceutical and medical technology manufacturers to their customers
This makes automation useful in healthcare logistics as well,” says Dr
Managing Director Healthcare at Arvato Supply Chain Solutions
“It allows us to respond more flexibly and efficiently to changing market needs
ensure optimal patient care and grow together with our customers.”
The appropriate automation solution was determined after a detailed analysis of inventory and delivery volumes and the structure of the products
Arvato has its own Logistics Engineering department
whose experts have clustered different automation technologies independently of manufacturers according to application standards as in a modular system
the modules for each project are then put together individually on the basis of the respective requirements
since the space conditions in Harsewinkel were predefined and could not be expanded at will
we opted for a state-of-the-art shuttle system with stacked bins from our service provider KNAPP,” explains Fabian Generotzky
Vice President Operations Healthcare at Arvato in Harsewinkel
With the increased storage density in the shuttle in this way
around 4,300 sq m of additional storage space have been gained
which is now available for growth with existing and new customers
For the implementation, the Healthcare division was able to draw on the experience and expertise of other successful automations by Arvato Supply Chain Solutions
Generotzky adds: “The implementation in an existing facility during ongoing operations was nevertheless one of the most complex projects in the history of Arvato Healthcare.”
A challenge that was mastered with great commitment from everyone involved
which extends over three floors in Harsewinkel
has a total capacity of 55,000 storage locations for 44,000 totes and 11,000 shipping cartons
84 shuttles move in the system in five aisles and can switch between the individual levels via six elevators
pharmaceutical and medical products are conveyed directly to six picking stations using the goods-to-person principle
Additional work areas for order picking and goods issue are connected to the system via high-performance conveyor and sorter technology
semi- and fully-automatic carton erecting machines support the dispatch processes
“The output per aisle is 400 to 650 movements per hour,” says Generotzky
the robotic vehicle both stores and retrieves goods – so there are no empty runs
so it’s ideal for processing high volumes and boosts efficiency throughout the value-added process of warehouse logistics.”
The customer structure at the site also spoke in favour of using a shuttle
so it is not possible to foresee a pronounced ABC distribution of products,” adds Generotzky
you quickly have direct access to the products and
you don’t need any lead time to get the items out of the system.”
With the new shuttle system in Harsewinkel, Arvato Supply Chain Solutions is well equipped for further growth
Generotzky concludes: “We have built generously and planned for capacity expansions in order to be able to react quickly to the increasing demand on the market

CLAAS is celebrating half a million combine harvesters built since 1936 - and is producing several anniversary machines from LEXION
EVION and DOMINATOR at three locations on three continents
field days and demonstrations in the coming weeks and months
European pioneer of combine harvester productionCLAAS has been one of the key pacesetters in combine harvester development for many decades
the Harsewinkel/Germany-based family company rationalized grain harvesting in Europe with the mowing-threshing-binder with the cross-flow principle
The great success finally came in 1946 with the SUPER series
which from 1953 could also be delivered with add-on engines and from 1958 as the SUPER AUTOMATIC with a hydraulic cutting unit drive
More than 60,000 units of the SUPER were marketed worldwide and even found buyers in Canada and Uruguay
International competence and production networkOver the decades
CLAAS has also supplied other manufacturers with combine harvesters
CLAAS combine harvesters have no longer been manufactured exclusively at the Harsewinkel headquarters
the first CLAAS CROP TIGER rolled off the assembly line in India
of which more than 10,000 units have been produced
CLAAS has also been producing LEXION hybrid combine harvesters for the North American market in its own factory in Omaha - in colored yellow and with Caterpillar branding until 2019
Assistance and data management: From the Throughput Control Device to CEMOS and CLAAS connectThe fact that threshing performance has increased since the first European combine harvester
is not only due to further developments in hardware and higher engine performance
automation has become an increasingly important part of further optimization in the areas of efficiency
With the introduction of the throughput control device in 1974
CLAAS began integrating electronic operating aids into combine harvesters
which was introduced in 2013 and has since won several awards at international trade fairs such as Agritechnica and SIMA
then proved to be a real game changer: to this day
it has been continuously expanded to include further processes in the combine harvester and on the cutting unit
enabling optimal utilization of the machine with a full focus on maximum harvesting performance - supported thanks to the unique multi-crop suitability of all CLAAS combine harvesters
More than a machine: The CLAAS PrincipleFrom the first combine harvester in 1936 until today
CLAAS has provided its customers with comprehensive support
When purchasing a combine harvester from CLAAS
customers expect maximum performance and productivity through leading technology and optimal support
groundbreaking driver assistance and close networking with the CLAAS service partner
not only is maximum campaign performance achieved
but also a unique lifetime performance of every CLAAS combine harvester
It is thanks to this future viability that CLAAS combine harvesters have always remained in use for a very long time - in some cases for more than five decades
Due to extremely low annual losses in value
all CLAAS combine harvester series and models are very popular
Customers can participate in the anniversary for the 2025 harvest season with a special sales edition
in addition to selected equipment features
is characterized by “More than a machine” stickers on the side panels
All CLAAS combine harvesters from the 2025 product year will also receive a small sticker on the cabin door
“A CLAAS combine harvester is actually much more than a machine,” continues Mohr
LEXION and DOMINATOR there is a powerful sales organization
fast and reliable spare parts supply and much more
a strong international marketing of used machines
like the technical factors of overall performance

Global machinery maker rebuilds its 70-year-old German combine factory floor
Germany — When Claas began building its first mower/thresher/binder units in the late 1930s
it would have been hard to imagine that the progeny of these machines would be constructed inside a facility that has 54 acres under a roof
It also would have been hard to imagine machines this big; the hopper doors wouldn’t have been able to open under the roof
the harvesters didn’t even have doors — or hoppers
The 110-year-old company has just updated its combine facility in Harsewinkel
much of which dated back to the early 1950s
While most of the largest Lexion machines that North American farmers are familiar with hail from the Claas of America factory in Omaha
more than 50 percent of those machine’s 15,000 or so parts are assembled there
the company produces a wide range of machines in its European headquarters in Germany
Claas began building self-propelled combines in 1952
under a roof that was less than 14 feet high in places
That would prove tight for today’s machines and even its largest four-wheel drive tractors
which are also built at the newly revamped facility
the company kept the overall footprint of the factory
the investment paid for a lot of modernization beyond the building’s shell
including in-floor guidance for semi-autonomous “alligator” robotic units that ferry combine chassis around the facility like giant metal snowballs growing larger with every foot travelled
It also allowed the company to move off dedicated assembly lines for each model-type of machine
from the all new Trion and the biggest 790 horsepower Lexion
Tiger can be assembled more efficiently than before
“We don’t build a bunch of one model and then (retool) for another one and build those
We build as the dealers and their farmers order them
It avoids delays and having inventories to manage of machines built (on speculation),” said Shoushen He of Claas in Harsewinkel
Staff are trained and certified to build every machine on the assembly line
“It is far more efficient and provides a lot of diversity for our people working on the floor,” she said
Today about 1,600 people work on the plant floor
“two to three” tractors and “eight or nine” forage harvesters
And we can open the (hopper doors) on the biggest machines now,” she said

Arvato Supply Chain Solutions continues to advance the automation of its locations
a driverless transport system (DTS) has been introduced to handle all floor-level pallet transport jobs for the healthcare sector at the Harsewinkel distribution center
The system includes six automated industrial trucks from Jungheinrich that can move around the space freely and deliver around 400 pallets a day to their destinations
Arvato uses its Harsewinkel location to deliver logistics services for customers in the pharmaceutical and medical technology industries
with 31,000 square meters available for this purpose at the site
To cope with the increasing volume of internal pallet transport tasks while also countering the shortage of skilled labor
the site has invested in six driverless transport trucks developed by the specialist Jungheinrich
around 300 reflectors were installed on the walls and shelves along the transport routes in the summer of 2019
These serve as navigation points for the vehicles and are recognized by a laser scanner on the vehicles
This enables the driverless transport vehicle (DTV) to navigate with an accuracy of up to two millimeters using triangulation
a new conveyor technology control system was installed
floor markings were applied in accordance with 5S standards
and turning stations and buffer racks were set up on the central travel track to automatically buffer pallets and map out longitudinal and transverse transport operations
The new technology is rounded off by system interfaces with the warehouse management software and the conveyor technology control system
and Internal Transport were informed about the concept and the corresponding rules of conduct at the beginning of the year
and also stop at the disposal area to empty the waste containers
Driving jobs for the DTS are generated based on the transport jobs generated by the warehouse management software
The source and destination for the automatic system are generated via the respective source and destination storage locations
The DTVs navigate independently around the warehouse
and put pallet conveyor systems into operation
the warehouse management software and the conveyor technology
each pallet movement has an integrated status upgrade
This enables us to track the current position of a pallet in real time,” explains Erich Berg
the system also transports finished shipping pallets
The warehouse management software verifies whether there is already a loading row for the carrier or opens a new loading row and submits it to the control software
“We can also provide the system with manual support at any time
we can block off certain areas or hall sections in order to keep mixing between the traffic from the automated and manual halls to a minimum,” explains Matthias Anderson from the Logistics Engineering business unit
the vehicle comes to an immediate stop and does not continue its task until the obstacle has been removed
The vehicle is also connected to the personal protection system
the fire protection doors and the fire alarm system
the driverless transport system exits the danger zone independently
“Driverless transport systems are the cornerstone of automated intralogistics
Based on tried and tested standard industrial trucks supplemented by automation components and controlled by intelligent software
they perform recurring transport tasks for high handling volumes extremely safely and efficiently
is a driverless transport vehicle based on the EKS vertical order picker
The EKS 215a can transport loads of up to 1.5 t in weight and automatically store them at lifting heights of up to 6.0 m
the vehicle can reach maximum speeds of up to 2.5 m/s
the vehicle travels at a speed of 1.7 m/s and the lifting height is 2.5 m.The elimination of the driver’s platform makes the EKS 215a particularly maneuverable
The self-supporting forks of the EKS 215a enable it to transport special load carriers and closed pallets
as well handling stations that we can’t drive vehicles under,” says Dr
“The implementation of the Driverless Transport System provides optimum support for our employees,” said Fabian Generotzky
Director of Operations at Arvato Supply Chain Solutions
“They can devote themselves to more value-creating activities and put their energy into tasks such as stocking the reserve warehouses so that goods can be retrieved more quickly
this also increases the level of quality in the warehouse
Damage to pallets is minimized because the system works with millimeter precision
Alongside VVA in Gütersloh and the Arvato logistics center in Landsberg
the Harsewinkel facility is one of the pioneers in this field
“Given the great depth of integration into the processes and the associated complexity
I am sure that this project can be used as a prime example for the further expansion of automation at Arvato,” Project Manager Berg says

the pioneer behind Claas agricultural machinery
he was exposed to farm machinery at an early age because his parents managed a small agricultural machinery firm with about 100 employees
“After studying agriculture in Paris
he took over the planning and establishment of a Claas distributor in France
He joined his parents’ firm in Harsewinkel in 1958,” said a company news release announcing his death
Claas became managing director of the firm in 1962
a partner when the company restructured in 1978 and then chair of the board and shareholders in 1996 after the firm became a joint stock company
company develops a trait that it says provides genetic resistance to sclerotinia
“His special focus was always on developing pioneering products and mass-producing them economically
following the success of the Dominator combine harvester
came the completely new development of the Lexion,” the news release
“The Jaguar forage harvester and the large tractor Xerion were also developed under Helmut Claas.”
Claas took over the tractor business from France-based Renault Agriculture in 2003 and expanded production sites in Russia
The machinery pioneer had honorary doctorates from four universities and was made a knight of the French Legion of Honour
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of American Equipment Manufacturers in 2013
such as honorary citizenship of his hometown of Harsewinkel
the Medal of Merit of the German state of Baden-Württemberg
as well as the Order of Merit of the French agriculture minister
round off his life’s work,” the company said
Claas owned and ran a farm in East Anglia in Great Britain and was an avid hunter
now manages the development of the Claas group of companies

Germany — One of the world’s largest combines slowly made its way from a narrow
European country road into a field of well-aged corn
Traffic patiently waited for the big machine to clear the road and put up with it tossing a little chaff onto vehicles as it cut its way into the tightly planted field
Harsewinkel is known by that name across Europe because it is home to Claas
is home to John Deere’s tractors and Hesston
These are towns where legendary farm machinery dominates the economy and presides over the history of mechanized agriculture
Despite financially harder times for most of the large farm equipment companies
or “turn over” as it is expressed in European terms
should remain relatively steady to down slightly
the company is avoiding making many cuts to its production staff
The Claas family business is the world’s fifth largest farm equipment manufacturer and has had $5 billion in annual sales the past couple years
It employs 3,300 of its 11,400 staff in the small community of Harsewinkel
so what happens in global machinery sales matters a great deal here
Despite tight times in farm machinery sales
Claas officials expect to see nearly $5 billion in annual sales again this year
Wolfram Eberhardt of Claas doesn’t have to worry about market regulators’ sanctions or angry shareholders when he speculates about the 101-year-old company’s year-end sales before the last quarter closes
it’s a family business; just a big one,” he said during Agritechnica
“(Financially) it has been more of a challenge (this year)
one has to expect slowing at some point in agricultural businesses,” he said at the 100 acre Harsewinkel factory complex
The company continues to invest heavily in expansion
limiting its profit margins to four to nine percent
A few weeks ago it opened a nine-fold expansion of its Russian combine factory in Krasnodar
Many farm equipment companies have built assembly plants in Russia to meet that country’s 19 percent tariff on imported farm equipment
but few have chosen to set up full fledged factories built from scratch
It means that Claas is competing in the one area of machinery production that Russia is known best for: Rostelmash (Versatile) combines
Eberhardt said Claas will continue to supply engines and transmissions for Rostelmash’s combines
despite now being true domestic competitors
“We are thinking there is market for all of us
Russia is our next (door) neighbour here,” he said
“It was a challenge to get the staff we needed
but we have recruited the best people from across Russia to work in the new factory.”
One in 10 Claas employees are Chinese now that the company has bought combine maker Jinyee of Shangdong
Eberhard Weller of Claas’s international marketing division said 77 percent of Claas’s business is done outside of Germany
The company’s largest Lexion combines are made in Nebraska and
have a 40 percent share of the North American market
Weller said the company tries to build and engineer many of its machines where it has the best market for them and has followed that pattern since the 1960s
“The largest Lexion is built in North America
The (forage equipment is built) in northern France
The (small Indian made combine) Tiger is built where they use it,” he said

Virtually no other combine harvester has made its mark on the world of grain harvesting like the DOMINATOR from CLAAS
2021 sees the 50th anniversary of the market launch of the model series
the DOMINATOR has been on sale for longer than any other harvesting machine in the world
a new key player appeared on the combine harvester scene
followed a year later by the DOMINATOR 100
CLAAS moved into the 5- and 6-walker classes and in so doing set new standards for the industry
As well as opening up a new dimension of performance with threshing drum widths of 1,320 and 1,580 mm respectively
these models represented a major step towards the most advanced combine harvester technology with the hydrostatic ground drive
which was available as an option for the DOMINATOR 80
The plant in Harsewinkel was also thoroughly modernised for the DOMINATOR and organised to support the new modular design
the various DOMINATOR model series established themselves as the best-selling combine harvesters in Europe
This was the result of a programme of continuous combine harvester development – notable stages being the 5-series of 1975 as well as the 6- and 8-series in 1979 and 1982 respectively
the DOMINATOR 85 and DOMINATOR 105 saw the introduction of electronic throughput monitoring
CLAAS presented a world first in the form of the Cylinder System
This boosted throughput once again by using eight tangential separation cylinders for residual grain separation instead of straw walkers
with the series rounded out at the lower end with the DOMINATOR 115 CS
DOMINATOR 114 CS and DOMINATOR 112 CS models
the CS range was renamed as the COMMANDOR CS series
Market leader thanks to DOMINATORMoving into the 1990s
the DOMINATOR continued to be the driving force for sales and revenue in the combine harvester sector at CLAAS
delivering impressive performance not only in level terrain
but also on slopes as a result of the 3D cleaning system
It is thanks to this model series more than any other that CLAAS became the European market leader in combine harvesters and maintained its position in the top slot
the rugged seed green combine harvesters quickly became established in the grain growing regions of eastern Germany
CLAAS responded to the demand for higher threshing performance with new top models
An upstream accelerator drum in the MEGA threshing unit increased throughput by up to 30 percent
Shortly after the introduction of the new threshing and separation system
the high-performance DOMINATOR combine harvesters equipped with it were renamed MEGA
The smaller DOMINATOR models remained in the product range for several more years as a cost-effective alternative for farms with their own machinery and for export markets
Synonymous with performance and durabilityOutside Europe
the DOMINATOR quickly made a name for itself
the term DOMINATOR has even become established as a synonym for "combine harvester" – regardless of the colour of the machine
The seed green combine harvesters were popular not only because of their performance
because of their durability and their simple
straightforward design with excellent accessibility for maintenance tasks
DOMINATOR models were always in demand not only as new machines
their robust technology was complemented with innovations such as the CONTOUR cutterbar guidance or the 3D cleaning system mentioned above
Although DOMINATOR production in Harsewinkel ended in the landmark anniversary year 2021
CLAAS is continuing to produce the DOMINATOR 40 TERRA TRAC in India for sale in that region
and the DOMINATOR 370 has been manufactured at the Chinese CLAAS combine harvester plant in Gaomi since 2019 in the form of a hybrid combine harvester for both the local market and export
"It's important to us to maintain the name "DOMINATOR" in our production range as the embodiment of reliable
easy-to-operate combine harvester technology"
the CLAAS executive board member with responsibility for self-propelled harvesting technology
"By developing new DOMINATOR models and opening up new markets for these combine harvesters
we are also securing the long-term future of this world-famous product name.”
CLAAS (www.claas-group.com) is a family business founded in 1913 and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of agricultural engineering equipment
with corporate headquarters in Harsewinkel in Germany's Westphalia region
CLAAS is also a top performer in world-wide agricultural engineering with tractors
agricultural balers and green harvesting machinery
CLAAS employs more than 11,400 workers worldwide and posted sales of 4.04 billion euros in the 2020 financial year
Having entered full production at the end of 2018 after its 2017 Agritechnica preview
Claas has now manufactured its 100th Terra Trac (TT) Jaguar forager
The unit in question rolled off the production line on 4 February at the Harsewinkel plant in Germany
The TT option remains only available on the firm’s Jaguar 960 (625hp) and flagship 990 (925hp) models
over 90% of models sold are the flagship 925hp 990 variant
with some two-thirds destined for eastern dairy farms
which is longer than that of its wheeled counterpart
leaves the TT unmatched for comfort and ride quality
especially when crossing centre-pivot ruts and flood irrigation ridges
according to senior vice-president of the Claas forage harvester division Dominik Grothe
The Jaguar Terra Trac crawler units are only available for the 960 (625hp) and flagship 990 (925hp) models
leaving the Jaguar TT with an external width of less than 2.99m
is said to be initially used for technical training during the Jaguar expert camp scheduled for April

a 2287-hectare mixed-farming property at Bundella
She will add Tuwinga to her Tamalie Farms holding at nearby Blackville
which are planted with about 1400 hectares of sorghum and managed by local farmer Andrew Mitchell
Tuwinga was publicly offered for sale for the first time since being settled by the Traill family in the mid-1800s
The vendor was Angus and wagyu beef producer Mooney Pastoral Co
While there were four parties interested in Tuwinga
Elders agents Chris Malone and Ben Green said representatives of Ms Claas-Muehlhaeuser were the only bidders for the property
which was auctioned in the town of Willow Tree
“We negotiated while the auction was live.” Mr Malone told The Australian Financial Review
Tuwinga has 8.2-kilometre frontage to Tamalie Creek and a carrying capacity of up to 13,000 livestock
Mooney Pastoral Co operated it as a cattle-breeding and trading operation alongside a summer and winter crop rotation
Mr Malone said it was expected the new owners would develop the property further
Ms Claas-Muehlhaeuser took over from her late father Helmut Claas as chairwoman of Claas Group in 2020 (Mr Claas passed away in January 2021
The company was founded by Ms Claas-Muehlhaeuser’s grandfather August Claas
Her father Helmut took over as managing director in 1962 and was chairman from 1996 until he handed the reins to his daughter
Claas Group is owned by the family of Helmut Claas and the families of his late brothers Gunther and Reinhold
Claas Group sold €6.14 billion of tractors
It employs 12,000 people and has a large presence in Australia
has emerged as the $88 million buyer of a large cotton and cropping portfolio on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River near Whitton in the NSW Riverina
who earlier this year paid $23 million for venture capitalist Shayne Smyth and his wife Leonie’s waterfront Pyrmont penthouse (a record for the suburb) acquired the 2807-hectare Commins Portfolio – according to local valuers – through a company called Marina Nine Holdings
Spread across four properties within 18 km of each other
the portfolio was offered for sale by local cotton pioneers Tim and Roger Commins
LAWD agents Danny Thomas and Erica Semmens handled the sale of the portfolio
Mr Cheung will add the portfolio to his vast agricultural
Property searches show Sichuan-born Mr Cheung has spent hundreds of millions of dollars acquiring blue-chip property since migrating to Australia from Hong Kong in 2019
Apart from the $23 million penthouse at Sydney Wharf
owns a Bunnings warehouse at Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne’s west that he paid $79 million for in 2022
he paid $32 million for a 601-ha cotton farm at Carrathool in the western NSW Riverina (about an hour west of the Commins Portfolio) while in 2021 he paid $12.5 million for a 1300-ha farm at Timor in the NSW Upper Hunter
His residential portfolio includes a $15 million mansion at Castle Cove
