Jack Fox is having a Pro Bowl season at punter. Jake Bates is a two-time NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award winner And Hogan Hatten has excelled as a rookie long snapper Hatten talked with the Free Press for this week's five questions Last week we spoke with veteran receiver Tim Patrick about learning as a young player in the NFL Some questions and answers have been edited for clarity and brevity who spent training camp with the Seattle Seahawks) He was just such a stud in terms of whenever we played football basketball or baseball I always felt like he was a little better than me in everything it might be my brother or my mom cause my mom had the NCAA 3-point record for a while for Division I college basketball at Cal Baptist University but I'd probably still lean with my brother just cause he was all-state in football and basketball and did it pretty easily averaged more than 20 points a game and then was an All-American tight end Take me through the other athletic achievements in your familyHatten: My dad played played D-3 basketball at … the University of La Verne And then my uncle played for the Clippers for a little bit Baseball was really probably my best sport when I was younger THE FOX: Lions P Jack Fox on his dream golf foursome, sleep habits Hatten: So we always just wanted to play on different sides of the ball and I don't know why I'm going to be a quarterback and get paid $50 million you can be the receiver.' But I just wanted to play defense cause he was playing receiver so I was playing linebacker my whole college career and long snapping and he was probably the best player to ever play at Idaho in terms of what he did for the school He led us to two completely dominant seasons and he was unbelievable That's really what it came down is I didn't want to be I think in my mind I probably would've just been shadowed by him so I didn't want to be on that side of the ball of course it'd be cool to go down there and play in Mexico I think it'd probably be cooler for the Lions organization to play in Germany But I think it'd be cooler for our organization to play in Germany just I know we have so many fans over there and it's just a hotbed right now for American football even though they love their European football Either way I'd love to play in either place I think it's cool that the NFL is expanding internationally where would you most want to play a game?Hatten: My heart wants to be like we should go to Toronto for a game just cause it's closer I think there's still a lot of American football fans in Canada and they support the CFL and that's a sufficient league to where I think it'd be fun to be there But I think we'd overstep our boundary cause of the CFL I do think it would be cool to go somewhere in like Spain kind of playing in a Coliseum-type game where I'm sure that would pack out like if you decide to occupy your time playing sports So I did it for about two weeks and then said I'm going to play baseball.' So jumped over to baseball and then never had to have a job cause I always played a sport How much free food do do you get?Hatten: Oh She thinks I'm cheating on her when I go to Cane's So my buddies would call me Hogie for Hogie Bear Hatten: I've yet to develop a nickname in here I was probably like 12 when I started doing it just cause our team needed a long snapper and I was the center I can snap it longer,’ was kind of my mindset and I developed a throwing form where I just throw it with one hand because I was the center and you only throw it with one hand who wants to be the long snapper?’ I'm playing linebacker now I can still do it.’ So then I started doing it in high school and by the time I was a senior I was still doing it but I was so arrogant to the fact — probably ignorant I just didn't want coaches to know I did it cause I wanted to be recruited as a linebacker I ended up going to the University of Idaho .. I long snapped in high school.’ I didn't want them to know until there were two errant snaps in our first game against Penn State and they were like ‘Can anybody else do it?’ And that's when I put my hand up and next thing you know I ended up starting 53 straight games at long snapper We're going to have an open tryout thing.' And I went I did it in high school,' so the next thing you know I was doing it in the next game against Wyoming I wanted to convince my coach to let me redshirt and he wouldn't let me cause he said I had to snap So I was kind of upset I told him that I long snapped I could have redshirted and had been here another year and grown and developed,' and now I'm in the NFL it was the best thing that ever happened to me I'm not a special-teams guy.’ But when you get to a level that's this high it's just great to be a part of a team like this and be on a team that's so hot especially as a young guy getting exposed to real high-pressure situations That's what I want and that's hopefully what's going to help me out throughout the rest of my career Hatten: That’s a sore subject question because I've yet to have truly a bad snap in a game in my entire life I think I've always been a pretty confident dude in the terms that I've just sat and went and I believe a lot of the guys on this team can snap but nobody wants to snap when it's third-and-10 So I think getting to the point where you're confident enough in your ability to where the moment isn't shaking you or the yard line or whatever it is The moment never got too big in college?Hatten: Yeah and I look at it like such an important play But in college I intentionally let myself not care cause it would take the stress away from the situation where I'm like that mindset somehow led me into just becoming a pretty nonchalant but it's good that I'm here now with Dave Fipp who's really teaching me how to focus and kind of hone in my skills and realize how important everything is Fipp is my perfect coach in terms of in the NFL he's exactly what I needed and I know I'm getting so much better with him here and he's going to help me for the rest of my career I want you to be the best you can be.' And I know that that's what he's working for Hatten: I'm not sure if anybody's heard of fowling but we were doing a fowling thing and I couldn't hit the pin throwing it upright This was with Jack (Fox) over at the Grand Prix and I couldn't hit the pins throwing it upright something was weird so I just turned around and snapped one and then bonked a bunch of the pins Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board are pleased to announce that Timothy S of Colorado Mesa University has received a Fulbright Specialist Program award will complete a project at National Information Technology Park that aims to exchange knowledge and establish partnerships benefiting participants and overseas through a variety of educational and training activities within Business Administration citizens who share expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program each year Recipients of Fulbright Specialist awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the U.S The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S government and is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S Participating governments and host institutions and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program which operates in over 160 countries worldwide the Fulbright Program has given more than 400,000 students and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns Fulbrighters address critical global issues in all disciplines and leadership in support of the long-term interests of the United States Fulbright alumni have achieved distinction in many fields including 60 who have been awarded the Nobel Prize and 39 who have served as a head of state or government Do you have a story you would like to share with Colorado Mesa University? conservation genetic and forensic research approach She is a wildlife trade specialist working in Hong Kong on the many species that are threatened with illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade She has more than 10 years of biological research experience focusing on marine and tropical biology and human-wildlife interactions she works in the University of Hong Kong’s Conservation Forensics Laboratory (CFL) Much of her research has been related to wildlife conservation issues such as biodiversity loss human-wildlife interactions and the illegal wildlife trade Hatten’s work employs tools ranging from market trade monitoring Astrid Andersson applies scientific tools to combat wildlife crime and has been facilitating the use of microchip technology to protect animals at risk of illegal trapping in national parks Her postdoctoral research at the university leverages genomics to understand the trade routes through which Hong Kong’s urban cockatoos were introduced to the city She has spent more than 10 years working with multiple counter-trafficking nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and in the CFL which has enabled her to become familiar with Hong’s Kong’s legal and illegal wildlife trades—as well as the grey area between the two—and how to galvanize interdisciplinary collaboration to mitigate wildlife crime among academics Her work also encompasses urban ecology research and promoting human-wildlife coexistence in Asian megacities Andersson conducted their Ph.D.s on two species of critically endangered birds: the helmeted hornbill and the yellow-crested cockatoo Andersson about the current state of global wildlife trafficking ACAMS Today (AT): What drew you to the field of research on wildlife specifically the illegal trade of endangered wildlife Chloe Hatten (CH): I have always wanted to explore and understand the natural world around me and I have been driven to protect it and wanted to share this with others I was genuinely surprised by the amount of wildlife consumed the lack of environmental sustainability across the city and the knowledge gaps in understanding the wildlife trade here During my time working and then conducting my Ph.D I had some amazing opportunities to travel across Southeast Asia for wildlife forensic workshops and field work in tropical forests across places like Malaysia and Thailand and I saw an opportunity to do that with both wildlife traded through this city and those native to this city I have studied many species—from sharks and groupers to hornbills and cockatoos—using a variety of tools and methods to help answer questions about their trade But my real interest lies in bridging the gap between science and society so we’re also the solution to the same issues I love sharing knowledge on wildlife and trade issues with the public through art and through more structured means such as organizing conferences workshops and talks for both professionals and academics We’ve all got a responsibility to be aware of our personal impact and what we can do within our means Astrid Andersson (AA): When I started working on wildlife trade issues approximately 15 years ago I did so because I had this nagging feeling that the daily wildlife exploitation we participate in was not sustainable and was largely unregulated can we really be extracting such a high volume of fish out of the sea for an unlimited number of decades without it having consequences I started applying all the skills I had—communication enthusiasm—to spread awareness on illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade I can tell you definitively that my nagging feeling was right It is no exaggeration to say that the wild areas of our planet will be bereft of much charismatic megafauna—rhino pangolins—and lesser-known traded wildlife (e.g. Unless we all collectively do what we can and lend our skills to end the rampant unsustainable and illegal trade in wildlife AT: What is the most pressing issue related to illegal wildlife trafficking facing the world today CH and AA: This is not an easy question because there are so many the most pressing issue is the threat of biodiversity loss and the conservation of endangered species In the context of anti-financial crime (AFC) illegal wildlife trade is a multibillion-dollar industry It is highly lucrative and is placed within the top four global crimes alongside arms Not only does this illicit trade put immense pressure on vulnerable species but it opens a whole new arena for financial laundering through online transactions cryptocurrencies and the development of artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged with large networks of corruption and exploitation being potentially fueled by the proceeds of illegal wildlife crime Addressing illegal wildlife trafficking requires a coordinated and multifaceted approach involving governments conservation organizations and local communities Efforts to combat this issue include strengthening legislation raising public awareness and addressing the root causes of demand for illegal wildlife products AT: Why should AFC professionals be concerned with illegal wildlife trafficking CH and AA: AFC professionals actually hold the key to one of the most effective and impactful forms of counter-trafficking measures: intelligence gathering and cash flow disruption By doing your due diligence such as picking up on suspicious activity characterizing networks and identifying kingpins you are able to provide intelligence that is extremely difficult for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) or police to gather by other means can then ultimately translate into the disruption of networks freezing assets and hitting criminals where it really hurts: their wallets This is hugely significant and will save countless elephants because if the crime isn’t profitable or becomes too much of a risk then it won’t be worth it for the criminals and wildlife trafficking and poaching will subside AT: What are some of the red flags for illegal wildlife trafficking that AFC professionals should be aware of Do not just sit and wait for cases to be referred Identify suspicious activity (as in the list below) and actively search for and identify suspicious individuals do more than just kick them out of your financial institution Build a profile and share this information Do what you can within the confines of the law to pass information on It is your duty to inform customers and companies of high-risk items/individuals involved in their operations opportunities to collaborate with the Hong Kong Police are increased now given the expanded investigative powers provided since wildlife crime became classified under the Organized and Serious Crime Ordinance Meanwhile NGOs can also be valuable partners United for Wildlife have a financial task force regional chapters and a logistics task force which are excellent chances for networking Red flags that may indicate wildlife trafficking that AFC professionals should be aware of include those listed below AT: Could you provide a couple of examples of how DNA forensics techniques are being employed to detect if animals are being traded illegally CH and AA: Genetics are being used to answer many wildlife forensic questions such as: “What is this and where did it come from?” The most commonly asked question in wildlife crime cases is: “What species is it?” Here at the University of Hong Kong we use DNA techniques to identify the species of animal and plant parts/products sold in the markets and seized at borders orange object sold in a shop is from an illegally traded Or perhaps your family wants to put shark fin sea cucumber or abalone on the wedding menu How do you know which species are legal or not or even whether they are being sold as the species they are claimed to be Laundering an illegal species as a legal one is common as is laundering a cheaper species as a more expensive species (and therefore higher-priced) Species identification can generally be uncovered through traditional DNA barcoding taking advantage of unique genetic “barcodes” that individuals scientists have been expanding into next-generation genomic methods which look at the whole genome of an organism and provide a much more in-depth analysis of an individual (although these methods tend to be more expensive and labor-intensive) whole genome analysis or single-nucleotide polymorphism panels can be used to identify the individual animal or plant from which a part or product found in a shop or in the possession of a person originated This can help inform specific cases of poacher incidents AT: Have new developments emerged recently related to illegal wildlife trading both the act of illegal wildlife trafficking and finding its solutions are ever-evolving and changing As laws are tightening and enforcement are on the lookout for illegally traded species traffickers are finding new ways to overcome this—from shifting their illegal trade from physical shops to online platforms to packaging wildlife products in inventive ways (e.g. live endangered cockatoos in plastic bottles) to avoiding well-monitored land and sea trade routes it also seems like a lot more people are talking about illegal wildlife trading Wildlife forensic capacity has been increasing globally thanks to NGOs and societies like the Society for Wildlife Forensic Science collaborations between governmental departments NGOs and researchers have enabled new tools research and capacity to be developed—with the Hong Kong Wildlife Trade Working Group leading much of this work a wealth of interdisciplinary research has emerged in recent years (including from the CFL) aimed at answering conservation and population questions related to wildlife forensics We also note that it's not just illegal trade that is the problem but there’s a lot of unsustainable legal trade occurring that is threatening species worldwide We must keep on top of any crime or unsustainable practice with traceability sustainability and regulation if we want it to diminish extra attention must be paid toward crimes involving rapidly declining species Interviewed by: seniors whose basketball careers are coming down to three regular-season games and the Big Sky Conference Tournament Kyson Rose was a productive rotation center whose senior season was interrupted by a concussion that took him off the court for more than a month and cost him seven games He also suffered an ankle injury in practice that sat him for an additional four games Jack Hatten is a seldom-used walk-on guard who has appeared in four games for 12 minutes this season He is a redshirt junior whose playing career is coming to an end as he transitions to a support role with the Vandals next season Neither has made an impact on Idaho’s program like their teammate 2024 Big Sky All-Defensive selection Julius Mims who will also be commemorated at Idaho’s Senior Day Saturday against Weber State Hatten’s and Rose’s contributions to the Vandals (12-16 overall 7-8 and in contention for third place in the Big Sky) are more subtle and what Idaho’s program has given them is priceless “I can look back with no regrets,” Rose said I have been a huge fan of Idaho my whole life.” Originally from Kamiakin High School in Kennewick Rose came to the Vandals after two years at Walla Walla Community College “Ending up playing 20 minutes a game for two years is pretty cool,” Rose said followed a pair of football-playing cousins to Idaho Hayden Hatten was an All-America wide receiver who has signed with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League Hogan Hatten just completed a rookie season as the long snapper for the Detroit Lions “I thought I was going to go to Arizona,” Hatten said I thought I was going to party and have fun “(But) I lived with my cousins for four years love waking up every morning and going to the gym.” As his time as a practice player draws to a close Rose’s season is divided between before and after the concussion he suffered against UC San Diego on Dec 15 when he dove for a loose ball and an opponent stumbled fell on him and drove his chin into the floor “I do not remember much after that until I woke up freaking and coach (Alex) Pribble was holding my hand.” and he returned in a 72-67 loss at Montana on Jan “I am praying to get back (to normal) by Boise (and the conference tournament).” Rose said he expects to play against Idaho State Thursday after missing four games with the ankle injury Hatten has no illusions of getting to play With the Vandals still battling for third place he views Gonzaga’s 74-67 loss to Saint Mary’s on its Senior Day after the Gaels opened with an 11-0 run and a 9-0 spurt against a starting lineup that included coach Mark Few’s senior son Joe “I bring value in other places,” Hatten said Hatten and Rose take pride in being good teammates I give every ounce trying to do it,” Rose said After being invited to walk on by former Idaho coach Zac Claus “I started off trying to find a role for myself,” Hatten said “But I realized my role was going to be a glue guy I want to be the best practice guy I can be A good day at practice has to suffice for him “I have had days when I let it rip,” Hatten said “I have had days when I hit 3s back-to-back-to-back image and likeness endorsements among all the Vandals He has sponsorships from Moscow’s Corner Club for which he stars on a billboard and in a commercial I am at the Corner Club talking to boosters,” Hatten said and I don’t think I deserve it,” he said of NIL opportunities he will turn his skill finding NIL opportunities to finding them for other Vandals players next year Hatten said he is in no hurry to leave Moscow He hopes to play professionally in Japan or Europe next year and has reached out to Idaho Hall of Famer Orlando Lightfoot who had a lengthy career playing professionally about finding an agent and getting onto a roster “He has given me some great advice,” Rose said Rose wants to get into wealth management after growing up watching his mother have to stretch dollars “I want to help people make money,” Rose said Coaching high school basketball and teaching is also intriguing Although it did not result in playing time coming to Idaho gave Hatten an opportunity of a lifetime The frustration of losing so much time to injury as a senior has not colored Rose’s reflection of his career He says of being a Vandal “you come here because you love this place Give directly to The The Pioneers face one of the easiest and hardest questions of the NCHC teams The question is easy: Can Denver repeat as national champions Minnesota Duluth won back-to-back national titles in 2018-19 and Denver won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 but has a good recruiting class coming in and there are some top notch returners Sophomore Zeev Buium was the NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year the NCHC Rookie of the Year and a AHCA First Team All-America West pick last season when he led the nation's defensemen in assists (39) and points (50) He was taken by the Minnesota Wild with the 12th overall pick in the NHL draft Senior goalie Matt Davis was the MVP of the Frozen Four last season he was 8-0 with a 1.13 goals-against average and .956 save percentage Senior forward Jack Devine was a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award last season when he finished fourth in the nation in goals (27) and seventh in points (56) the Pioneers had nine players from last season's team depart he has led Denver to three Frozen Fours (2019 the RedHawks could actually finish lower than it did last season which was eighth in what was the last season of the eight-team NCHC But the bet here is that Miami is going to move up after going 7-26-3 overall in what turned out to be Chris Bergeron's last season as head coach who went 236-126-24-18 in seven seasons as the USHL's Tri-City Storm head coach He led the Storm to seven straight playoff appearances and Tri-City had the league's best record twice (2018-19 and 2021-22) in his tenure Teams that change head coaches typically show improvement the next season Miami had 10 players either sign pro contracts or leave via the transfer portal after last season There are six freshmen and three transfers on this season's roster but one of the big questions will be in goal Logan Neaton graduated after playing in 23 of the team's 36 games last season Sophomore Bruno Bruveris was 1-12-1 with a 4.15 goals-against average and .866 save percentage in 15 games last season The other options are graduate student Bret Miller who made 13 appearances over the last four seasons at RPI who played for the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers last season The big question for the Bulldogs is can head coach Scott Sandelin find a similar magic formula to what he put together when UMD won the 2018 national title with a young roster The Bulldogs are coming off a tough season in which they battled a lot of injuries finished seventh in the NCHC and 12-20-5 overall UMD was not helped when their leading goal scorer signed a pro contract after his sophomore season Steeves accounted for 23.3% of the team's goals (24 of 103) and 46.4% of the team's power-play goals (13 of 28) finished his eligibility and Blake Biondi (8 goals) transferred to Notre Dame So where the offense is going to come from is the first question The good news for the Bulldogs is that there are three NHL draft pick forwards among the freshman class in Max Plante (second round Tampa Bay Lightning) and Zam Plante (fifth round Freshman defenseman Adam Kleber (second round Buffalo Sabres) was second among USHL defenseman last season for shots on goal The next question is who is going to play in goal Matthew Thiessen and Zach Stejskal split time in goal last season The Bulldogs have brought in two freshman goalies in Adam Gajan and Klayton Knapp Gajan was the 35th overall pick in the NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks after finishing fourth in the USHL in wins with 23 for Green Bay last season There are a couple of obvious holes that need to be filled with leading scorer and Hobey Hat Trick finalist Jackson Blake signing an NHL contract (Carolina Hurricanes) and starting goalie Ludvig Persson signing a pro contract with Brynas IF in Sweden Blake tied for fourth in the nation in both assists (38) and points (60) Persson tied for ninth in the nation in wins (21) and tied for second in shutouts (5) The Fighting Hawks were eighth in the nation in scoring (3.8 goals-per-game) He had 21 points more than Owen McLaughlin who was second on the team with 39 as a sophomore Cameron Berg had a big season after transferring in from Nebraska Omaha with career-bests of 20 goals UND has another talented group of freshmen coming in highlighted by defenseman EJ Emery (first round defenseman Andrew Strathmann (fourth round Calgary Flames) and forward Mac Swanson (seventh round Sophomore Hobie Hedquist played in seven games for the Fighting Hawks last season and he will battle T.J Semptimphelter spent the last two seasons as the starter at Arizona State With all of the NHL draft picks and talent on the North Dakota roster the Fighting Hawks will go into the season as one of the favorites to win the NCHC after winning the regular-season title last season The bigger question is how will UND fare in the postseason North Dakota was one of the top-ranked teams in the nation last season but ended up losing in the semifinals of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff to Nebraska Omaha and then lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Michigan North Dakota has the advantages of being one of the blue bloods in college hockey having the best facility in the country and leading the nation in attendance missed the NCAA tournament three times and gone 1-5 in NCHC semifinals games played at neutral sites since all three rounds of the single elimination NCHC playoffs were held in Grand Forks due to the pandemic and UND went 3-0 Nebraska Omaha had not made it out of the first round of the NCHC playoffs until last season when the Mavericks advanced to the Frozen Faceoff championship game which was its best record since going 24-15-3 in 2000-01 and made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2021 The good news for the Mavericks is that their top two players in points — forward Tanner Ludtke (11-17-28) and defenseman Griffin Ludtke (4-23-27) — both return who has been the team's starter for the last 1 1/2 seasons The tough news is that the three of the next four players in points (Ty Mueller Matt Miller and Nolan Sullivan) are gone and so is forward Nolan Sullivan who was the team's captain the last two seasons who was the captain the last two seasons at Alaska should help after picking up 20 goals last season Perhaps the biggest question will be on defense Joaquim Lemay transferred to Northeastern after his sophomore season and Kirby Proctor graduated Graduate student defenseman Aidan Gallacher was the captain at Northern Michigan last season and Dylan Gratton transferred in after two seasons at Penn State The Huskies narrowly missed making the NCAA tournament last season after tying for third in the NCHC during the regular season and reaching the Frozen Faceoff semifinals What kept SCSU out of the national tournament was the Huskies going 4-9-3 in the regular season after Christmas SCSU gave up four or more goals in 10 of those games after the holiday break That was supposed to be one of the team's strengths going into the season with goalie Dominic Basse and five of their top defensemen returning With Jack Peart signing with the Minnesota Wild and Dylan Anhorn graduating SCSU's top two defensemen in minutes played are gone an All-CCHA Second Team pick last season at Northern Michigan Sophomore Isak Posch finished last season as the team's starting goalie The hope is that he will stay healthy after showing lots of potential before an upper body injury kept him out of the lineup for about a month last season Redshirt sophomore James Gray played in his first game for SCSU last season and he and Gavin Enright Perhaps the biggest question is who are these guys There are 16 new players on Western Michigan's roster this fall The Broncos have made a school record three straight NCAA tournament appearances and have been one of the top scoring teams in the nation each season Replacing their top line has become an annual tradition for WMU and the Broncos are replacing their top three scorers from last season in Luke Grainger (14-34-48) Dylan Wendt (23-21-44) and Sam Colangelo (24-19-43) one of the top freshman in the country last season had nine goals and 19 points in his last 15 games Cameron Rowe is back in goal for his fifth season of eligibility after playing in 76 games over the last two seasons for the Broncos a fourth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings Among the top new players are freshmen forwards Zach Nehring and Ty Henricks and freshman defenseman Joona Vaisanen Nehring is a third-round draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets Henricks is a sixth-round pick of the New York Rangers and Vaisanen is a sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins Chattanooga Christian School freshman Momo Moore is making a habit of making difficult things look easy on the basketball court Last year's Division II-AA Miss Basketball finalist notched her third straight game with 30 or more points in helping lead the way to a 60-50 home victory over with seven kills “Made some adjustments and got better throughout the match,” Moscow coach Lisa Davis said Idaho – Fresh from helping his Detroit Lions beat the Seattle Seahawks on Monday long snapper Hogan Hatten headed to Moscow While many of his newly minted Idaho alum colleagues are probably getting their careers started in various ways is one of 32 people in the world entrusted with delivering a football on target and with velocity to the holders and punters of the multibillion-dollar National Football League Hatten performed the same service for the Vandals and played linebacker from 2019 to 2023 When he learned about three weeks ago that the Lions’ bye week dovetailed with Idaho’s homecoming “There was a 100% chance that I would be back in Moscow,” Hatten said bouncing between visiting former teammates and old haunts as the familiar figure he was as recently as four months ago while offering insights on how to reach bigger goals “I have been driving through the city absorbing the energy of being around town again,” Hatten said “There are things here I will remember forever “I overwhelmingly appreciate these coaches and give these young guys a sense of how amazing this place is I really want to get around and see some important faces that need to be told While reconnecting with old teammates at practice Wednesday “I think they can look at me as something they can be He carries the perspective of a college football player and a pro “The crazy part is it is not that much different,” he said Making this team is these guys’ Super Bowl it was playing in my first preseason game.” But there is an understood imperative among NFL players you are getting out of the league,” Hatten said there is a heady rush of playing in the NFL that cannot be duplicated “If you could bottle the emotion of walking out of an NFL tunnel and sell that “You feel like you are on the best team in the world.” That’s easier to feel with the highly regarded Lions (3-1) “We might actually be the best team in the world.” Detroit is enjoying a renaissance as a city reimagining itself after emerging from decades of decline in assembly line auto manufacturing and with the formerly woeful Lions This makes it a great place to represent as an athlete “The city is very proud of what they have built “I think the city sees the football team as part of their work.” In Monday night’s 42-29 win over the Seahawks Hatten recorded his first NFL tackle against punt returner Dee Williams he brought a jersey worn in that game to Marc Trivelpiece which in addition to its reputation as the center of the social world for generations of UI students is also home to a trove of Vandals athletics memorabilia Hatten negotiated with Trivelpiece to have his framed jersey displayed next to a plaque honoring the pass receiving records of his brother Someone pointed out that the framed jersey is larger than the plaque “The guy is a legend here,” he said of his All-America brother “He can slap me around in Idaho any time he wants.” Hatten plans to make the most of the homecoming experience He expects to be at the traditional bonfire Friday When Idaho plays Saturday against Northern Arizona a team Hatten played four times as a Vandal “There is not a school in the world I want to beat more,” the Arizona native said “They looked my brother and I in the face and said we were not good enough to play there.” during his weeklong break from that world Hatten seems to be getting the hang of the alumni thing “This will be my first bonfire as a fan,” he said By Ryan Clarke, The Detroit (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)AP Carlos OsorioDETROIT — Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes Jake Bates made a 35-yard field goal as time expired on a snap from Idaho graduate Hogan Hatten and the Detroit Lions clinched a playoff spot with a 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night “This will be one of those you’ll never forget,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said The NFC-best Lions (12-1) broke a franchise record with their 11th straight win — including two over the Packers (9-4) — to stay ahead of Minnesota (10-2) in the highly competitive NFC North Campbell went for it on fourth down five times including with 1 yard to go at the Green Bay 21 with 43 seconds left barely getting a handoff from Goff after the quarterback got his feet tangled up and was falling toward the turf “I just got tripped up there a little bit,” Goff said “It’s a bad feeling when you’re a quarterback.” That ensured the Lions could try a field goal without giving the Packers the ball back and Bates hit his third-game winning kick this season “I just felt like we needed to end it on offense,” Campbell said “I did not want to give the ball back and I believed we could convert Goff threw two touchdown passes on fourth-and-goal He also threw an interception in the third quarter to set up one of Josh Jacobs’ career-high matching three TD runs Goff found Jahymr Gibbs open in the end zone for a 2-yard pass on a fourth down with 11 seconds left in the first half to put Detroit ahead 17-7 Goff later connected with Patrick on a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter Green Bay took advantage of the only time Campbell’s aggressiveness didn’t pan out denying Gibbs on a fourth-down run late in the third quarter from the Detroit 31 Jacobs scored for a third time on a 3-yard run on the ensuing drive Brandon McManus made a 32-yard field goal with 3:38 left to pull the Packers into a 31-all tie in a game that had four lead changes earlier in the second half “That’s exactly the kind of game we expected,” Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said There were just a couple plays that didn’t go our way.” The Lions’ final drive began with Goff’s 19-yard pass to Jameson Williams Brown for 16 yards on the decisive possession Goff finished 32-of-41 passing for 283 yards and six Lions players had at least five receptions Jordan Love was 12-of-20 for 206 yards with a touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft early in the third quarter DE Lukas Van Ness (thumb) were hurt during the game Lions: DL Alim McNeill left with a head injury after he was evaluated for a concussion and returned to play briefly Packers: At NFC West-leading Seattle in a Sunday night game on Dec Lions: Host AFC East-leading Buffalo on Dec Hogan Hatten never really identified himself as a football long snapper until last year. Now he's part of the Detroit Lions' 53-man roster A long shot to make an NFL roster at linebacker he's been long snapping for football teams since his youth football coach searching for someone to hike the ball back to the quarterback and punter Hatten has been a long snapper since he was 12 He was the ultimate Swiss Army knife during his days at both Phoenix Pinnacle and Scottsdale Saguaro high schools where he stood out with his twin brother Hayden Hayden got most of the headlines because he scored most of the touchdowns on the receiving end of many Spencer Rattler touchdown passes where they helped the Sabercats win a state championship as seniors While starting his college career at Idaho encouraged Hogan to let the coaches know he could long snap to be part of the traveling team "They had a kid who was a fulltime long snapper who was on scholarship," Matt Hatten said "But you could be a backup long snapper and a linebacker then it's going to help you travel as a freshman "I said it's going to be hard to travel as a backup linebacker He traveled on the first game to Penn State Our starting long snapper had two snaps that were bad In the second game of the year against Wyoming he went down the field and made the tackle He was the long snapper for the next 52 games." But it wasn't until last year that he began to really explore long snapping going to camps and getting expert training 'I think you can long snap in the NFL,' " his dad said He started snapping 150 to 200 balls a day ranking him third out of 179 long snappers since 1979 to score that high The Lions told Hatten before the NFL draft that they wanted to sign him as a free agent after the draft to compete for the long-snapper job Lions coach Dan Campbell put Hatten in as a linebacker for a part of a game just to see how he moved Hogan was a three-sport athlete who also played basketball and baseball growing up His brother Hayden became an All-American receiver at Idaho and signed with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent Hogan never minded being in his brother's shadow "People don't notice him as much as somebody who scores touchdowns Just like the quarterback gets paid more today because he's the quarterback." Matt Hatten said his son was excited about it "But it was kind of like the culmination of I committed myself to be as good as I can be he also got to check a milestone off his bucket list by snapping the game-winning kick into the hands of Jack Fox who held it for Jake Bates to boot it through against the Minnesota Vikings His long snapper position is also the center of recent debates about legal methods for teams looking to gain leverage while trying to block field goals There has been some controversy as far as the clarity of the rule but teams pulling the long snapper down is a trend that has gained momentum in the NFL "It’s a weird thing to me because I don’t really agree with being able to drive a guy down into the ground and jump over the top of him and I’ve expressed that to the League before because whether you call it a hold or a pull-and-shoot you’re pushing the guy down and shooting the gap over the top of him and restricting him from being able to do his job," said special teams coordinator Dave Fipp It would be kind of like if you’re snatching a guy on whatever defensive – your pass rush and you’re snatching an offensive lineman or pulling him out of the way so a guy can run through a gap." It is interesting if the league wants to legislate leverage but still allows long snappers to be pinned down during field goal attempts the play will be reviewed in the offseason to determine if there is an unfair advantage Lions OnSI caught up with Hatten after Wednesday's practice to discuss the winning moment his development and the new field goal block trend developing across the NFL Interview questions and answers are edited for length and clarity What was the process leading up to the game-winning field goal like and how did it feel to see the kick go through Hatten: “Kind of like Jake said, it’s always good having an offense where you feel like they’re capable of getting you in position to win the game. Then when we get down there, it’s really just do our job and realize that’s what we’re here to do. I’m here to snap, Fox is here to punt and hold and Jake’s here to kick It’s great to really have confidence in a unit being so young and realizing that we all play off each other and we all feed off each other But the emotions and the feeling are just unmatched It’s really one of the coolest things ever in my life and I continue to hope (for) getting that feeling so I don’t have to snap the game-winning kick.”  What did you think about Jake's flexing celebration after making the kick Hatten: “I thought it was awesome when Jake got to show a little bit of emotion He’s not really a super emotional guy and it was fun to see him celebrate and really kind of give himself some credit He’s very tough on himself and it’s just fun to see a guy like that succeed because his story is incredible.”  Jake Bates Earns NFC Special Teams Player of the Week What has your development looked like since making the active roster but it really comes from coach Fipp and his work ethic is that how you remain calm when it's time to snap for the big kicks Hatten: “Yeah I think practice and repetition. But in all, every time I’m out here with coach Campbell and coach Fipp watching me, I feel like I’m snapping the Super Bowl snap just because they put that much pressure on you. I promise you Bates feels it too and Fox will even feel it holding just because our coaches are so intense and they demand we look like a great team and we look like a team that is coming together and melding well I know we’re all kind of new to each other like we’re great friends outside of the facility we go out and have an occasional beer after a good win It’s really important to just kind of find those friendships but really find people you trust I feel like Jake and Jack trust me just like I trust them.” Teams across the league are utilizing a new strategy for field goal blocks where they pull the long-snapper down Did that happen to you against Minnesota and what's your view on that strategy Hatten: “It did happen on that play and I don’t necessarily know the rule on whether you can push me down or pull me I got pulled on that play and I don’t necessarily know That’s just one of the hazy parts of the game If somebody is on the line and they jump over you from there you’re usually enough in the way to where they can’t get to the kick It’ll be interesting to see what the NFL does with that rule We've got @DanMillerFox2 on the 🎙 for Jake Bates' game-winner ✨ pic.twitter.com/xndvsPmpAA Was that a similar way that you've seen defenses approach your snaps in recent games Hatten: “For the last couple games, they’re shooting A gaps or come hard off the edge. But for some reason, they went with the pin the long-snapper move and I, for my first time in the NFL, it’s the first time it’s every happened to me. College, high school, anything, I’ve never had that happen. It was pretty foreign.”  READ MOREConvicted felon accused of attempted murder in downtown West Palm Beach shootingby Sophie Pendrill (CBS12) — A convicted felon has been accused of attempted murder after firing shots at a man walking in Downtown West Palm Beach The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) stated that on Wednesday at around 10:05 p.m. they had responded to 610 5th Street in Downtown West Palm Beach regarding a Shotspotter Activation which alerted them that four rounds of gunfire detectives stated that they were stopped by the victim on the corner of 4th Street and North Sapodilla Avenue The probable cause affidavit notes that moments later later identified as 61-year-old Timothy Hatten WPBPD stated that they then attempted to stop Hatten to which he fled on foot on North Sapodilla Avenue; the officer eventually caught up to Hatten to which he complied with being apprehended Another WPBPD officer took over while the other went back to check on the victim The affidavit notes that the other officer ran a background check on Hatten in which he was cleared and released due to no outstanding warrants The victim told an officer that he was walking to his girlfriend's house located on 5th Street and saw Hatten walking on the other side of the street The victim continued to tell WBPD that Hatten had a gun in his hands and cocked the slide to the rear See also:Deputies find five bodies in one day in Indian River County The victim noted this made him fear for his life the victim stated that Hatten began firing at him with his gun While the officer was interviewing the victim and the victim identified him again as the shooter Hatten was detained for a second time and placed in a patrol car where he denied his involvement in the shooting after being read his Miranda rights He confessed to the officers that he is a convicted felon and acknowledged that he knew he was not allowed to possess a firearm A K-9 officer from WPBPD responded to the shooting scene and discovered a handgun which had been reported stolen in a separate case WPBPD also reported finding four shell casings at the scene Hatten has been accused of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon Find more ways to stay up to date with your latest local news. So, he runs pretty good, and he kind of has an awareness on the football, and he’s played some defensive snaps for us — a couple," Campbell told the Detroit Free Press "We needed him in there with where we were at at linebacker to finish a game out well can you’ — and what we know about Daly Daly has been able to snap consistently and under pressure He has to be able to prove that he can do that with a rush on him." Roundtable: Lions Player Likely to Get Claimed by Other NFL Team officially ushering in the first season under new coach Mike Macdonald In preparation for the new incoming season we'll be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks and predicting what to expect from each player entering the 2024 campaign Coming off an illustrious career in the Big Sky conference will Hayden Hatten be a contender to unseat one of Seattle's veteran receivers in a loaded position group Following a standout prep career at Saguaro High School in Arizona Hatten committed to Idaho and began his career seeing action as an undersized tight end catching 10 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns as a true freshman Breaking out as one of the FCS division's best receivers in 2022 he surpassed 1,000 yards receiving for the Vandals while averaging 14.6 yards per reception and scoring 16 touchdowns Though he didn't find the end zone quite as much as a senior in 2023 he set a new career-high with 93 receptions for 1,235 yards and still scored nine touchdowns dropping a total of one pass in his final two years on campus The two-time FCS All-American went undrafted and signed with the Seahawks as a priority free agent A dangerous possession receiver with soft hands who did damage both as an outside receiver and in the slot Hatten logged 28.4 percent of his career snaps at Idaho playing inside most of his production came lined up as an X or Z receiver but he has enough route running savvy to play any of the receiver positions for Seattle which should help him earn more opportunities in the offseason program and training camp USA; Idaho Vandals wide receiver Hayden Hatten (80) catches a pass for a touchdown above Indiana Hoosiers defensive back Reese Taylor (2) during the second half at Memorial Stadium Mandatory Credit: Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports / Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY SportsBest Case ScenarioTurning into this year's Jake Bobo Hatten dazzles throughout OTAs and training camp high pointing footballs and doing damage over the middle of the field offsetting perceived athletic limitations with his route running acumen to surpass Dareke Young and Dee Eskridge on the depth chart and earn a spot on Seattle's opening day roster Unable to compensate for his lack of burst and quickness Hatten struggles to create separation in camp and the preseason and his inability to contribute much on special teams prevents him from standing out in a crowded depth chart as the Seahawks release him in mid-August while he isn't playing an ideal position given the star power Seattle has at receiver Hatten shouldn't be underestimated as a dark horse to push Eskridge Fantastic at winning contested catches both downfield and across the middle with sticky hands and smooth route running skills he already made several nice grabs in the first open OTA session suggesting he plans to make his presence known as Bobo did last spring Due to the congestion at the top of the depth chart and his lack of experience on special teams it may be tough sledding for Hatten to do enough to make the Seahawks especially since he isn't much of an after the catch threat his polished skill set as a receiver should make him a good bet to return on the practice squad at minimum and if he can light it up in exhibition games snagging passes from Sam Howell and/or a third string quarterback he has the talent to force his way onto the roster later this summer The Detroit Lions have made a decision on their long snapper for the 2024 season The Detroit Lions will have a new long snapper in 2024. According to Dave Birkett, the Lions are cutting incumbent snapper Scott Daly and going with undrafted rookie long snapper Hogan Hatten. Daly has been the Lions’ snapper for the last three seasons unseating Lions legend Don Muhlbach in 2021 Muhlbach has since retired as a player and become the Lions’ special assistant of football operations While Daly has held the long snapper position for three seasons the Lions constantly gave him competition in training camp Although McQuaide took back over midway through the season after Daly suffered a season-ending injury The potential of Hatten was apparently too much for Daly this year Hatten moved from linebacker to long snapper for the University of Idaho His most intriguing quality is his outstanding athleticism Hogan Hatten is a LS prospect in the 2024 draft class. He scored a 9.89 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 3 out of 179 LS from 1987 to 2024.Our top long snapper, yes we track those as well, ended up out of Idaho's pro day.https://t.co/ayJL7FCxoF pic.twitter.com/J1mDO5YqZY That athleticism certainly showed up during the Lions’ preseason games. Several times over the past month, he was one of the first defenders down the field for Detroit’s punt coverage team. In fact, he produced two tackles as well—playing part-time at linebacker in Detroit’s opening preseason game against the New York Giants so hopefully the Lions have their long snapper for the next decade or two With Hatten making the 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie a UDFA has now made the Lions’ initial roster for 15 years in a row To catch up on all of the Lions roster cuts, be sure to head to our 2024 Detroit Lions roster tracker. It is fairly uncommon for a freshman to come in and take over as the No Goalies like Colorado College's Kaidan Mbereko are the exception Mbereko played in 30 of the Tigers' 38 games and was 9-16-2 with a 2.30 goals-against average He was fifth in the nation in save percentage and he tied for 10th in shutouts on his way to being named to the All-NCHC Second Team Minnesota Duluth could go with a freshman in goal this fall Junior Zach Sandy has played in one game over his first two seasons With Matthew Thiessen and Zach Stejskal both finishing their eligibility the Bulldogs will be looking for either a new No 1 goalie or could go with another tandem in net with the additions of freshmen Adam Gajan and Klayton Knapp played last season for the NAHL's Bismarck Bobcats Knapp played in 30 games and was 13th in the NAHL in goals-against average (2.32) and save percentage (.921) and went 17-8-3 Most goalies begin their freshman season as a backup and then There were four goalies on NCHC teams who saw significant time last season as freshmen and it will be interesting to watch what happens in their sophomore seasons Posch may have played more during the season but he suffered an upper body injury in a game against Denver on Jan 13 and it was almost a month before he played in his next game He ended up playing in 14 games and was 5-6-2 with a 2.93 goals-against average Halyk began the season as a backup to Matt Davis but took over the starting spot for a stretch when Davis was out injured in November and December he was 1-2 and gave up 14 goals and did not play in a game after Dec Dying Scene Punk group the Bastard Suns have added a new bassist in the form of Mikey Hatten We at The Bastard Suns are proud to announce we have found our new bass player Levon White left some pretty big shoes to fill and after auditioning many talented musicians we are proud to welcome Mikey Hatten to the band Mikey is also the bassist for our buddys Groove Stain The best part about this is now we can start working on a new album We are shooting for a summer time release which will include a summer tour in support of the new album So ignore any rumors saying we are done because we are far from over The Bastard Suns recently completed their “Band For All Seasons” project, where they released a five-song EP for each season.
