lightbulb. The drug led to Heide’s own break with traditional theater and gave birth to the author of 25 Plays. “Then out on the street they were taking me home and I was going in and out, in and out. Then I stop, I look at the sky, at the stars, and I said, oh my god. There is no time. We’re just in this eternity,” he recalls. “Then I realized that all these plays were pushing time forward, distracting the audience—it isn’t what I wanted to do. I wanted to do something existential.” Heide was writing plays before he joined the Cino cohort, often receiving negative reviews from befuddled mainstream critics such as Judith Crist. His plays were some of the first ever to deal openly with homosexuality, especially West of the Moon, and it did not initially award him much fanfare. “I didn’t know this, I was just naïve. You couldn’t mention the word gay or homosexual. It wasn’t mentioned in the New York Times,” Heide tells me. “Reviews I got said: ‘Robert Heide should go home and break his typewriter over his hands.’ ‘Robert Heide will never write another play again.’ And I was devastated.” After the bad reviews, some of Heide’s close friends suggested he move to Paris. His own Left Bank, however, turned out to be waiting on Cornelia Street. “Joe [Cino] had seen West of the Moon and he said, ‘I want you to write a play just like it for two blonde Nazi men.’ That’s the expression he used—he’s Italian, so we have to forgive him. But what he meant was he wanted two sexy men. So that’s what happened.”   Out of Cino’s request came Heide’s most performed play, The Bed, filmed by Andy Warhol, who heralded it as a work of genius. Two men, presumably lovers, never leave their bed, except to withdraw money deposited by a parent or purchase another burger or slice of pizza. One of them, Jim, starts itching to escape the lifestyle, while the other, Jack, scorns him for doing so. At the end, Jim leaves to buy a cup of coffee. Jack buries his head in his hands, and the curtain drops. “I had been through such a relationship where I had been holed up with somebody, drinking and not getting out of the bed or the apartment,” Heide says, recalling the time of life in which he composed the play. “[The Bed] wasn’t waving a flag saying, ‘I’m gay.’ It was about the dissolution of a relationship. Not a happy gay sexy relationship.” “The whole idea was that [The Bed] would be microscopic,” he continues. “You’re looking at these people, and it could also be outer space. They did it at [defunct Lower East Side theater] Speedy’s with a dirty mattress and dirty sheets. I don’t mind, people can do what they want. There was a production in New Orleans recently where the two men…had the mattresses tied to their backs. Go figure that.” The Bed’s subtext is even more complex than it first appears. The books that Heide has read more than any other help to elucidate: Heidegger’s Being and Time and Sartre’s Being and Nothingness. Norman O. Brown’s psychoanalytic study of history, Life Against Death, which is currently undergoing a minor revival, also ranks with his favorites. “Death is in the room every day. We’re living and dying every day, not just living. That was the idea of the whole hippie movement, really embracing life in its fullest,” he explains. “They were against working. They had free food stores in San Francisco. There’s so much to be learned by that, but then suddenly it was over.” Despite the following decade’s reputation as a period of “sexual revolution,” Heide sees a stark contrast between the cultures of the ‘60s and ‘70s, believing the latter was plagued with a nihilism that, despite its share of darker undertones, the former had avoided through renewed interest in spirituality and world religions. Behind the new supposed privileges of liberation, Heide prophetically felt a pall looming in the wings that would soon prove him correct. “Guys would be on Christopher Street cruising, and their penises would be showing,” he says, still with a slightly incredulous tone. “The cops didn’t even care. It seemed to me, after Stonewall, nobody cared about anything. I had a feeling one night in the late ‘70s, something’s gotta give in all this, something’s going on here. I didn’t know what it was. But what it was was this medieval disease about to strike.” After AIDS decimated Downtown bars and hangouts, Heide wrote for New York Native, an AIDS information newspaper. “I’d write an article about Charles Ludlam, or maybe a book about Lana Turner or James Dean. Just to bring back the gay sensibility,” he says. Robert Heide’s 25 Plays will be released in Fall 2017 by Fast Books. For more information, visit www.fastbookspress.com. Coach Matt Painter talked about adding a physical big man to the roster. Purdue asks Paint Crew student section to halt chants about football coach Insider: What Daniel Jacobsen's season-ending injury means for Boilers "You go through struggles and you go through bad games but you have to know the work you put in and the hours you put in outside of practice time and in the weight room that everything is going to work out whether you play five minutes or you play 20," Heide said going 0-for-2 from the field and providing three rebounds and a block Coach Matt Painter's frustration with Heide wasn't in the two shots he missed but in the two open shots he didn't even attempt You're a 40% 3-point shooter," Painter said you normally give us a pretty good chance to rebound those long rebounds I am not upset at all for him getting two good shots and missing it." What also limited Heide's playing time in that game was the fact another role player was capitalizing on his minutes Myles Colvin sank four first half 3s and the Boilermakers were going to run with the hot hand Colvin knows the drill as much as Heide does "I am just trying to be as efficient as I can offensively and defensively no matter how many minutes I play," Colvin said "I am just looking for my opportunities and being aggressive Coaches want me to shoot the ball and I’ve put in a lot of time to be able to do the things I’m doing so it’s just a matter of trusting my work." Last Friday, Heide played 16 minutes and scored a pair of free throws late in a win over Northern Kentucky and Colvin Heide has lineup flexibility and, especially now with the loss of Daniel Jacobsen to a fractured tibia could see more minutes playing as a stretch big Colvin and Heide also shared the floor some during the second half against Northern Kentucky But their games are similar and how much playing time is available on a given day will depend on the impact they quickly make after coming off the bench Both are 3-and-D players who also have no shortage of highlight-reel worthy dunks Painter's philosophy is to not go into a game with preconceived notions of minutes disparity it's the same situation both found themselves in last season "Our roles can change any day," Heide said "With our athleticism and ability to shoot the ball we can both kind of have a similar role and kind of go wherever coach Painter needs us to." Colvin and Heide will be taking their talents to the ACC and SEC The transfer portal giveth and the transfer portal taketh Purdue has learned it will lose two high-flying wings in Myles Colvin and Camden Heide It was first announced that Myles Colvin entered the transfer portal on Monday 3 days following Purdue’s loss to Houston in the Sweet Sixteen NEWS: Purdue guard Myles Colvin has entered the transfer portal, per @247Sports source.Former four-star recruit that averaged 5.4 points, 2.6 rebounds this season.https://t.co/UvVafMVONK pic.twitter.com/d9keOMCoCb was stuck in a bench role in Purdue’s offensive scheme where he was mostly utilized as a spot up shooter on offense Myles was 7th in the Purdue rotation by minutes per game (17.8) and he averaged 5.4 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 31.3% from 3 on 131 attempts Where Myles really developed well was the defensive side of the ball His ability to stay in front of someone with the ball with his athletic ability was a nice development his hard work showed in an increase of minutes as he averaged 22.3 minutes in Purdue’s 3 NCAA Tournament contests Myles would average 6.3 points and 3 rebounds for those 3 games while putting up one of the best dunks of the tournament The angles are NASTY ‍ #MarchMadness @BoilerBall https://t.co/njAJ1crbeJ pic.twitter.com/nFpRngNnck Today it was announced that Myles will be exchanging his old gold and black uniform for another gold and black as he will transfer to Wake Forest This will give Myles a fresh start in North Carolina and the chance to apply his entire skillset Purdue transfer guard Myles Colvin (@mylesjcolvin) has committed to Wake Forest. The former Four-Star averaged 5.4 PPG and 2.6 RPG this past season.https://t.co/Z5bYN42ddP pic.twitter.com/8DTaAPBNLF 3 days following Myles’ entering the transfer portal Camden Heide also announced he was entering on April 2nd NEWS: Purdue forward Camden Heide is entering the transfer portal per his agent Paolo Zamorano of Prodigy Sports group.https://t.co/C2ITdarOXe pic.twitter.com/1tVJBY0Wcf was limited in his offensive role and was primarily utilized as a spot up shooter with excellent hops hitting 10 of 16 from deep across 5 games in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments including a game tying 3 with under a minute left against Houston Cam’s other major impact on the floor was rebounding the basketball respectively) directly helped the Boilermakers win games Cam was actually 4th in the Purdue rotation in terms of minutes per game at 19.7 and often was the first alternate for Caleb Furst Cam averaged 4.7 points and 3.6 assists on the year while shooting 39.2% from deep on 79 attempts you may also remember Cam’s epic dunk from last year’s National Championship game CAM HEIDE PUTBACK DUNK WOW. #MarchMadness @BoilerBall pic.twitter.com/hngzzLYih2 With the scope of Purdue’s roster next season It took two days for him to find a new home as he will transfer to Texas We will certainly miss Myles and Cam and wish them nothing but the best in their new spots here are the dunks both guys made about 3 and a half minutes apart back in January Filthy. : BTN pic.twitter.com/lydks5Uv7P Two in the same game? Wild. pic.twitter.com/sCEjui753p Former Purdue basketball player Camden Heide's next stop will take him to an SEC program in transition On3 reported Friday Heide plans to transfer to Texas. He became the fourth Boilermaker to enter the transfer portal last Wednesday but is the first to announce a destination Heide joins former Xavier coach Sean Miller, who took over the Longhorns last month The 6-foot-7 Heide became a mid-season starter for an eight-game stretch as coach Matt Painter leaned into a small-ball lineup He remained a rotation mainstay all season 3.6 rebounds and 0.4 assists over 19.7 minutes Purdue portal tracker: Who's in, out for Matt Painter's Boilermakers Late in the second he became a more productive rebounder He also made 10 of 16 from 3-point range (63.5%) in postseason games pushing his season average to just short of 40% Texas fired coach Rodney Terry after two-plus seasons when the Longhorns lost in the NCAA tournament's First Four Editor's note: Camden Heide has committed to Texas. Read full story here WEST LAFAYETTE — Camden Heide became instrumental for Purdue basketball in the postseason who started eight games this season as a redshirt sophomore including 4.7 to go with 3.6 rebounds in 36 games this season Insider: Camden Heide's instincts took over in torrid finish to Purdue basketball season The Boilermakers also added center Oscar Cluff from South Dakota State INDIANAPOLIS — In Purdue basketball’s moment of utmost urgency Thursday night, Camden Heide responded with clarity they needed his two 3-pointers — and really could have used the one he didn’t shoot — to counter the Trojans’ 11-0 run they needed each of his nine rebounds — his second such lockdown performance on the boards after halftime in the past couple of weeks Purdue’s best chance at a deep run this week — and in the weeks to follow — depends on a team beginning to touch the promise everyone believes it can attain a year from now It depends on role players rising to the occasion and single plays which thwart the line between gut-wrenching upset and survive-and-advance practicality Purdue player ratings: How much would Kaufman-Renn score without foul trouble? on a night when the Boilermakers came dangerously close to unraveling and limping home early Heide turned in a similar performance — with similar stakes — two weeks earlier against UCLA already reeling from a four-game losing streak took a beating on the defensive boards in that first half Heide grabbed nine second-half rebounds and helped flip the second-chance equation in a crucial victory poised performance — one the Boilermakers expect more regularly now from those players with the battle scars of a first-round exit a Final Four run and this season’s ongoing evolution Making shots and asserting himself on the boards are more connected than one might assume Purdue coach Matt Painter did not see it early Thursday from Heide or from a large portion of his roster and obviously we want him to shoot the basketball," Painter said "He had a couple chances right as he got in the game to get 50-50 balls "That was kind of the energy of our team at that time USC needed two overtimes on Wednesday night to beat Rutgers in the opening round The energy and stamina advantages would presumably be in Purdue’s favor the Boilermakers turned the ball over seven times in the first 12 minutes USC built a 28-18 lead with 7:14 to play in the first half The one element which worked was Kaufman-Renn's interior presence — when he was not on the bench with foul trouble He had already scored eight points when USC sagged in- to deny him opening Heide for a 3-pointer to end that 11-0 run He had another open look less than a minute later — and in a reversion to early season form As the Purdue-heavy crowd admonished him for the choice the play devolved into a shot-clock violation players -- I think my dad was probably yelling at me too Heide did not pass up the next opportunity hitting another 3 to close the deficit to two Kaufman-Renn scored on the next trip to tie the game 28-28 A potentially massive pothole had been avoided Money matters: Where does Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter rank among highest-paid coaches? Pretty high It could not consistently limit Desmond Claude as the Xavier transfer juked and weaved his way to 14 points after halftime An upset loss — and its potential damage to the Boilermakers’ NCAA tournament seeding — hinged on the defensive grit absent from multiple late-season losses After Kaufman-Renn's bucket tied the game 67-67 with 5:14 to play Heide grabbed the defensive rebound at the other end Smith’s driving layup with 3:42 left put the Boilers up by two USC then gave itself three looks at the game-tying basket by grabbing a pair of offensive rebounds Heide’s rebound finally flipped the possession Kaufman-Renn put back his own miss at the other end for a 71-67 lead Claude responded with baskets on consecutive possessions to tie it the Trojans put the ball back in their star’s hands Painter said after the game Purdue was "lucky" Claude missed a pullup jumper in the lane Heide secured the rebound and Kaufman-Renn sealed the win at the free throw line Heide had one career game with more than six rebounds "As you get older and you've been around the block a time or two you know how -- especially at this time of the year -- it gets tougher and even more difficult," senior Caleb Furst aid "Other teams are more keen into their scouting report We've got to be more keen into our couting report It's definitely something that comes with age and experience." Getting veteran minutes from players like Heide will almost always transslate into getting productive minutes from them It's why Purdue wakes up Friday with another late-night game to play Sign up for BoilerUpdate to receive the latest Purdue news Per reports from On3's Joe Tipton, Purdue Boilermakers transfer forward Camden Heide has committed to Texas after spending the past two seasons under head coach Matt Painter He entered the portal on Wednesday and didn't take long to make his decision There was no reported buzz surrounding Heide and Texas as his commitment came from out of nowhere he joins Xavier wing Dailyn Swain as the first two players to transfer to Texas in the Miller era averaged 4.7 points and 3.6 rebounds this past season while starting eight of 36 games he hit a pair of clutch triples in the final five minutes that nearly sent the game to overtime including one that tied the game with 35 seconds left Miller said during his introductory press conference that the team intends to play fast Having a shooter like Heide there to space the floor while also offering solid size is clearly something Miller sees benefiting the offense "Certainly recognize there's a number of programs in the SEC that are playing a style that is unique using the three point shot more than ever before playing at a pace that maybe the great teams of the past didn't necessarily play as fast but that's what I believe in," Miller said there's no way you can do it by scoring and out scoring people in college basketball the defense is so much a part of the talent that you have when you think of basketball people think of talent on the offensive end that right there impacts the defensive side of the ball perhaps even more here you have to be great at both." The Longhorns will need to keep stacking commits over the coming weeks in order to put together a competitive roster for next season ZACH DIMMITT The sophomore wing had an up and down season but finished shooting 60% from behind the arc the final eleven games of the season Purdue Boilermakers wing Camden Heide has entered the portal with an intention to transfer according Paolo Zamorano of Prodigy Sports group that represents Heide That is a big loss for the Boilers who saw Heide finish the season as one of the hottest shooters in the country shooting 60% (15/25) over the final 11 games of the season He also grew into one of the program’s better rebounders as he averaged 4 rebounds per game over that same stretch A highly athletic wing capable of guarding multiple positions Heide flashed as a super-athletic player with a massive upside because of his shooting ability Best known for his highlight reel dunk in last year’s national championship game Heide grew into a more complete player as a sophomore this year Heide averaged 4.7 points and 3.6 rebounds while playing an average of 19.6 minutes per game With the addition of transfer frontcourt player Oscar Cluff and a return of Daniel Jacobsen from injury it was likely that Heide would not be able to work his way into the starting lineup and may actually see a potential decrease in minutes TKR is likely going to see his minutes stay consistent around 30mpg while the addition of Cluff and Jacobsen means most of the minutes will come at the power forward position that Heide has played Heide will be a highly valued target for other programs but there is no indication of any schools reaching out for contact at this time It should be noted that Heide’s family recently moved to Alabama from Minnesota but there is no indication that would be a deciding factor on where he may eventually decide to go Miles Heide’s play the last two games helped propel the Aztecs to wins over USD and CA Baptist every individual feels that they can bring something to the table They believe in themselves and want to play Waiting your turn can be a struggle for most it’s hard not to notice players that perform well after not making an impact earlier in the season The “Next Man Up” mentality is what makes sports compelling This term isn’t always reserved for injuries a player gets his moment to shine by practicing hard Miles Heide is showing signs of progression because he remained patient Heide understands San Diego State’s culture as one of the few returning players. The sophomore is a key contributor in rebounding and that is an important part of Aztec Basketball Heide only played nine minutes in the season opener and did not score He then scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds against Division III Occidental and played only 39 combined minutes across five games but Heide never gave up the hope that he would be needed to play crucial minutes for the team Heide’s rebounding was a big part of the Aztecs pulling away and winning He even played late in both games over Magoon Gwath and Jared Coleman-Jones because Heide grabbed rebounds in bunches Against USD, the sophomore grabbed nine rebounds with eight points on 4/5 shooting in 18 minutes (the most all season). Against the Lancers this past Wednesday, Heide scored 10 points on 5-5 shooting and had five rebounds (four offensive) The forward even recorded his first steal of the year the confidence wasn’t there,” Heide admitted postgame against CA Baptist and I’m willing to go out there and play my role for the team and do whatever I can to help us win.” Head coach Brian Dutcher expressed that in his opening statement after the win against California Baptist “It was our rebounding that betrayed us,” Dutcher said postgame and we have to have better rebounders on the floor—one of the two We have to find a way to turn really good defense into possessions for us We got young bigs that have to get better every day The only negative of the game was rebounding.” “Yeah (Heide) was really good on the offensive glass,” Dutcher said when asked about his sophomore’s performance “I thought at the end he was in there a lot when we couldn’t get the ball either He has to do a better job on the defensive glass SDSU played a very good rebounding team when they defeated No 6 Houston in Las Vegas for the Players Era Festival Houston only had a 40-38 rebounding advantage There will be games down the road where rebounding will be needed to win the game late If Heide can show that he can rebound when others can’t then he will continue to earn minutes in crunch time Chris is a graduate of the University of San Diego He is the former Sports Editor for the USDVista newspaper and now covers San Diego State Men’s Basketball He also contributes regularly about the Padres Chris is an athlete and is a huge fan of San Diego sports — The confidence issues that Camden Heide talked about earlier this season seem to have faded into the distance The sophomore wing played a pivotal role in Purdue's 75-63 win over High Point in the first round of the NCAA Tournament recording the first double-double of his career Heide ended Thursday's first round game with 11 points and 10 rebounds He iced away the game by throwing down a wide-open dunk with 44 seconds remaining That slam secured the sophomore's double-double as well as a victory for Purdue It was a big moment for Heide — a player who has gone through plenty of ups and downs over the course of the 2024-25 season he produced the best performance of his career honestly," Heide said following Thursday's game "I think it goes for a lot of people in this room everybody can go through ups and downs with life and on the basketball court "You can never be too high or too low — anything can happen at any moment It's about looking forward to what's next there's always another opportunity to play That's what we're here to do." To understand the significance of Heide's performance on Thursday the sophomore had scored just two total points and collected only five rebounds six-rebound effort in a 92-84 victory over Yale It may not have looked like much on the stat sheet but those buckets came at pivotal times in the game he revealed that he had battled confidence issues to begin the year At the time, he said he was relying heavily on his teammates for support and encouragement It's been no different for Heide over the course of the season Perhaps the greatest motivator for him has been Braden Smith who has been barking at the sophomore to start taking more shots when he gets the opportunities "Braden has been on my ass a lot for me not shooting the ball Why would I not want someone pushing me?" Heide said "I think he's the best player in the country The opportunities for Heide aren't as frequent as they are for Smith the sophomore has taken full advantage of the chances he has gotten Heide was four-of-six from the floor in Thursday's win over High Point He's now connected on 14 of his last 20 shot attempts from the floor He's also crashing the glass at a high rate grabbing 10 in Thursday's win and 11 in last week's victory over USC in the Big Ten Tournament Heide is playing with a lot more confidence than he did at the beginning of the season It's not just the success on the court that is providing that extra jolt it's the work he's put in since Purdue started practicing in June everybody puts the work in," Heide said 500 shots per day in the middle of the season it comes from everybody on our team wanting to be ready PURDUE GAME STORY: No. 4-seed Purdue grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, and all those extra possessions helped the Boilermakers knock off High Point 75-63 in their first-round NCAA Tournament game Thursday in Providence, R.I. Former Purdue forward Camden Heide has committed to the Horns via the transfer portal Heide initially entered the transfer portal on April 2 The 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore averaged 4.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 49.1% from the floor and 39.2% from three-point range this season Heide had a good game in Purdue’s season-ending loss to Houston in the Sweet Sixteen scoring nine points and grabbing five rebounds His season high came in December against Maryland when he went for 15-points Heide played high school basketball at Wayzata (MN), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 130 overall player and No. 33 small forward in the 2022 recruiting cycle in the On3 Industry Ranking Heide is the fourth Purdue player to enter the transfer portal this offseason Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire WEST LAFAYETTE — To conclude a Purdue basketball week dominated by talk of accountability Camden Heide took a proverbial halftime look in the mirror Heide heard a week's worth of his coaches' emphasis on fighting downhill and playing physical ringing in his ears Friday night He called his first half “soft." Matt Painter did not use that term but after the game enumerated three different instances where his third-year wing let possessions slip away Over the previous two weeks, the Boilermakers could not make the connection from identifying a problem to correcting it. That deficiency, and the four-game losing streak which accompanied it, ended with a 76-66 victory over UCLA Purdue player ratings: Trey Kaufman-Renn backs up talk, losing skid ends How’s this for an individual response: Heide grabbed nine rebounds in 12 minutes With that game-changing effort supporting typically prolific paint production from Trey Kaufman-Renn and Braden Smith’s clutch second half Purdue confronted another skittish second half and conquered it Purdue’s Big Ten championship hopes vanished during that losing skid remain more crucial than ever as the calendar flips into March “I think it kind of affected everybody," Heide said of a week of reflection which included a players-only meeting called by Kaufman-Renn There's certain things like going to hit your guy and going to get the ball There's so many small details that we emphasize every week in practice Especially at halftime — I had to be better I had to take accountability for stuff and do the best that I can to help the team.” Purdue's two-week tumble from Big Ten front-runner to fading fast posed a chicken-before-the-egg question Does a team need poise and confidence in order to execute or does execution bring a team poise and confidence They are the final steps below “competitive success” — only achievable after other factors such as “self-control,” “cooperation” and “skill” have been achieved The funk which smothered the team the past two weeks rolled in again Friday Purdue built a double-digit lead in the first half UCLA made a familiar surge in the final minutes of the first half then built off that momentum into the second Throwback threads: Family bond preserved only known John Wooden Purdue basketball jersey to exist the Boilermakers summoned a finishing move A recently reeling squad galvanized itself by making more winning plays than its defensively fierce “It’s what you’re supposed to do,” Painter said “You’re supposed to get into tight games right there and enjoy it Looking like their old selvesPurdue's two biggest stars returned to form Kaufman-Renn scored 29 points on 15 field goal attempts and backed up his public ownership of the recent slide Smith scored 23 on a night headlined by his ascent to Purdue's career assists lead Yet his two biggest plays came elsewhere on the box score Insider: From lightly recruited Mr. Basketball, Braden Smith became Purdue's most prolific passer Purdue led by three again with under six minutes to play when Heide missed a late shock-clock 3 With UCLA potentially able to tie the game going the other way Smith swooped in from the other side of the lane to grab the offensive rebound The extended possession led to a Kaufman-Renn basket for his sixth straight points UCLA posted up second-leading scorer Eric Dailey Jr Before the Bruins’ field goal percentage leader could make his move Smith swooped in from behind for his fourth steal Fletcher Loyer added another a minute later and the Boilermakers reclaimed something they’d so sorely missed in recent closing stretches: command Purdue led at halftime in three of the four straight losses It trailed at Michigan State by two in the other mostly because UCLA kept undercutting the Boilers’ defensive stops by dominating the glass The Bruins grabbed 10 offensive rebounds in the same first half in which Purdue managed seven total rebounds They built a 9-0 advantage on second-chance points A continuation of that trend quite likely would extend the growing existential crisis of the losing streak Heide took it upon himself to turn the tables He started running down long caroms or using his jumping ability to clean the glass Purdue began capitalizing on almost every second-chance opportunity — going 6 for 6 from the field off its six offensive boards (and one deadball rebound) They included an and-one and a pair of 3-pointers The Boilermakers won second-chance points 16-0 in the second half What nearly broke them in the first 20 minutes carried them in the final 20 Painter called it a "great win" he hopes will boost his team's confidence with season-defining challenges ahead this team appeared to have all the confidence it needed the Wayzata native will be looking for a new home Heide was a dominant force at Wayzata High School, where he led the Trojans to the AAAA state title in 2021 as a junior. He transferred to Wasatch Academy in Utah for his senior season of high school basketball. He was a four-star prospect in the class of 2022 and chose Purdue over top offers from Minnesota, Marquette and Wisconsin. He struggled to find a specific role with Purdue, but it was clear that the talent was there. He began to put it together in the NCAA Tournament with his first career double-double against High Point in the first round with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but he averaged only 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game for the season. The competition will likely be fierce for Heide in the transfer portal market. He's a versatile forward who shot 80.6% from the free throw line and 39.2% from three last season. The desire to come back home and play for the Gophers might not be as strong for Heide as some recruits, as he and his family have bounced around since his time at Wayzata. New Gophers head coach Niko Medved has historically favored smaller lineups, and a player with Heide's skillset would fit perfectly in the frontcourt. He was recruited by a different Minnesota staff out of high school, but the stylistic fit is too strong to overlook. The Gophers would have a long list of competition, but Heide is a player worth monitoring. Sela Heide needs tickets for Saturday’s game against San Diego but for family members and friends who will be attending Oregon State’s regular season home finale against San Diego Heide is one of five seniors who will be honored in the traditional senior day ceremony “I think I’m going to need to figure out how to get 18 (tickets),” Heide said “The beautiful part about our family is that we all play basketball But the hard part about that is my little brother will also have district playoffs on the same day.” is a sophomore at Mount Si High in Snoqualmie If his team loses in the state playoffs he will be able to attend Heide wants to be prepared as her family celebrates her time as an Oregon State basketball player That is an experience she shares with both of her parents Sissel (Pierce) Heide played at Oregon State from 1997-2000 Oregon State senior Sela Heide is joined by sister Scarlet there’s people I see at Sela’s game that were there when I played,” Sissel Heide said Beaver Nation that just showed up for us.” If that shared family experience seems inevitable now Sissel Heide would never have attended Oregon State She had originally committed to play for coach Judy Spoelstra at Montana State But when Spoelstra left that job to follow Aki Hill at Oregon State Oregon State was a dream school for me because that’s where my grandfather went,” Sissel Heide said Sela Heide’s recruiting process had its own changes in direction She suffered a knee injury in the spring of her junior year and wasn’t able to play the club circuit that summer “The offers she did have on the table kind of went away,” Sissel Heide said Sela Heide bounced back with a strong senior year averaging 17 points and 11 rebounds per game But Oregon State wasn’t really an option at the time as coach Scott Rueck already had a crowded frontcourt So she chose to attend California and play for the Golden Bears It was a decision her parents understood completely “They were just supportive about whatever I wanted to do and wherever I saw the best fit for myself,” Sela Heide said which was helpful because I definitely had other people outside my family who were like but had to sit out almost all of her second year due to injury While the on-court experience was frustrating at times she took full advantage of her academic opportunity earning a degree in media studies with a focus in law and policy in just three years she was ready to look for a different basketball opportunity and this time around Rueck had a star player in the post — Raegan Beers — but the team lacked depth at that position brought great size as well as experience to that role This wasn’t the first time Rueck had signed a player with deep ties to Oregon State Rueck thinks that shared family history can provide extra motivation and he thinks Heide’s experience is “as cool as it gets.” “I think it’s really special to be a legacy It just means a lot for her to get to play on the court and walk the same halls that her parents played in and walked,” Rueck said “I always think there’s just a little added incentive to succeed and protect the culture and the place if it’s truly a part of you.” Sela Heide said she sometimes can’t believe she’s actually at Oregon State “It’s still kind of crazy to me that things ended up working out the way that they did But it’s just such a blessing to get to experience similar things that they did And to get to be a part of a program that I know my mom helped build at some point is really cool,” Sela Heide said When she was younger she took for granted the kind of fan support Oregon State women’s basketball has enjoyed over the years Growing up she mostly went to college games at Oregon State or at Washington That was during the Kelsey Plum era with the Huskies and that team also drew a big crowd Sela Heide has been a consistent part of the Beavers' rotation this season and has become an efficient scorer and one of the top shot blockers in the West Coast Conference But during her time at California she saw that level of support wasn’t always present “Being on the road and being in gyms that aren’t as full as Gill it’s definitely a good reminder … to just appreciate the community that we have There’s only maybe a couple college towns in the U.S Heide’s goal was to have an impact on the team But she didn’t know whether that impact would be on or off the court Through the first four years of her collegiate career her highest scoring game was 12 points in a Beavers’ win over Arizona State It quickly became clear this season was going to be different She scored 26 points in the second game of the year A few games later she scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds in a nonconference win over Grambling Heide has continued to be a key part of the rotation in West Coast Conference play Sometimes she comes off the bench in place of Rees but the duo also spends a lot of minutes on the court together taking advantage of their size in a high-post Marotte has had a front-row seat to Heide’s development over the past two seasons “I think her confidence has just really elevated this year,” Marotte said a couple games where she hasn’t missed a shot It’s super fun to see her confidence grow and see her be a bully down there.” Heide has been very efficient on offense for the Beavers she went 8 for 9 from the field and scored 16 points 1 she was 7 for 7 from the field on her way to 14 points That is by far the best shooting percentage in the WCC but she doesn’t have enough attempts to be eligible for the official list Heide is part of a long line of Oregon State post players and she credits Rueck for having a great vision for that position and being able to help players reach their potential “I think it’s apparent to everyone that I’ve improved significantly I’ve also just grown so much more confident in myself and my game which has been a really big factor in playing at a higher level,” Heide said “Just getting to expand my game a little bit I did not shoot a lot of 15-foot high-post jumpers until I got here and now that’s kind of become a big part of my game this past season which has been awesome to just contribute in different ways.” Both of Sela Heide’s brothers are basketball players is a sophomore who plays at San Diego State whom Sela Heide describes as “the center of our world” also plays It doesn’t take much imagination to see that in a few years she might have her own decision to make about where she wants to play Sissel Heide said for each of the children just because you play doesn’t mean that your kids should play.’ I totally agree with that the qualities you gain from being an athlete are so important to carry on through life,” Sissel Heide said Her family’s experience also gives her an interesting perspective on the remarkable burst of interest in women’s basketball over the past couple of years Caitlin Clark has become the face of the sport but a lot of women played a role in this growth over the years “Back when I was my daughter’s age and younger “Seeing women’s basketball take off like it has has been incredible.” After her playing days were over at Oregon State But she said the pay was so low at the time it just didn’t make financial sense So she is happy to see salaries and sponsorship opportunities grow for players in the WNBA And she is thrilled the league is adding three new teams Sela Heide is proud to be part of a family and an Oregon State basketball program that has played a part in the history of the sport “My sister’s a decade younger than me so the game is going to be completely different from what we know now when she’s at this level,” she said “It’ll be cool to see how it progresses and how it just gets better and more competitive.” to tie the game Camden Heide flew in to collect the critical rebound Purdue was able to ice away the game at the free throw line and defeated USC 76-71 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament That play that Heide made — one of the most important of the game — was a microcosm of his performance in Indianapolis Thursday night Let's call it like it is: Purdue's energy in the first half was lacking A night after USC had played Rutgers in a double-overtime game it was the Boilermakers — not the Trojans — that lacked fire Heide knocked down a three-pointer to cut into that deficit he hit another shot from behind the arc to close the gap to just two points Heide's third basket didn't come until the 11:28 mark of the second half — cutting a 56-52 USC lead down to just one point It would be the last time he'd score in the game but he wasn't done making an impact He closed out the night with nine points and 11 rebounds Every single one of those points and boards mattered and he was a big part of that," coach Matt Painter said of Heide's play Thursday and he kept it alive and had a wide open shot and we end up missing it Heide has endured a roller coaster year of sorts this season the shots weren't falling and he seemed to struggle with his confidence the sophomore has provided a big spark off the bench for Purdue Heide has found ways to become a major contributor for the Boilermakers regardless of if the shots are going through the basket or not "Anytime with my kind of role when you can get involved in the game obviously we have two of the best players in the country and they normally score a majority of the points "For someone like me to be able to make a play like a rebound something that a few people might view as a simple play but it kind of helps me get engaged in the game especially a few trips up and down the floor." The plays from Heide were anything but simple and they went a long way in helping the Boilermakers advance to the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament PAINTER TALKS DEFENSE: Purdue has struggled on the defensive end of the court over the last seven games. Coach Matt Painter explained how his team can fix some of those issues. CLICK HERE PURDUE HAS 'JUST WIN' MENTALITY IN B1G TOURNEY: Purdue is heading to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Tournament with a winning mindset.
