Heidenheim an der Brenz in southern Germany has not traditionally been on the list of football groundhoppers' away days
It's not that the hilly Ostalb region is unattractive -- far from it
It's more that getting to this community of 50,000 represents a bigger challenge than usual on public transport
you're well aware on the roads coming in from
Stuttgart or Ulm of being very much auf dem Lande (in the countryside)
Heidenheim's remarkable ascent to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2023 has certainly added considerable neutral interest in attending a game at the foot of Hellenstein Mountain
but good luck getting your hands on a ticket for a match at the intimate Voith-Arena with its capacity of just 15,000
If champions Bayer Leverkusen were die Unbesiegbaren (the unbeatables) last season
Heidenheim became die Unbeugsamen (the unshakables) and kitted themselves out with appropriate words on specially made T-shirts at the end of a maiden top-flight campaign that saw them defy the odds by qualifying for Europe
Gemeinsam unkaputtbar means together indestructible

In August, Heidenheim overcame Swedish club BK HĂ€cken to reach the UEFA Conference League proper. Now the adventure of a community club that has already reached unprecedented highs of emotion will hit an even loftier peak. Chelsea
there is financial support from the Voith machinery company based in the region
but not on the scale that one would associate with the kind of jaw-dropping progress Heidenheim have made
They pride themselves on two key concepts: kontinuitÀt (continuity) and beharrlichkeit (persistence.) Both qualities are best embodied by Frank Schmidt
-- and thus the longest-serving manager at any one club in the German professional game
Someday he plans to open a tapas bar with a close friend
but for now his priority continues to be serving the grateful locals with hearty
Heidenheim keep things simple by signing mostly German players with a smattering of a few Austrians from across the border
So as not to have multiple squad members who need time to adapt to their new surroundings
They also work to a tighter budget than most
and in the absence of a sophisticated international scouting system
Heidenheim now have one of the most exciting talents in German football playing for them
Wanner has excelled so far as playmaker-in-chief
Then there is the dynamic Brazilian Léo Scienza
an exception to their German/Austrian signing policy but with the important caveat that he has already spent four years in the Bundesrepublik with Schalke
Magdeburg and spectacularly last season with nearby SSV Ulm
Liga champions for whom he scored 12 times

Benedikt Gimber, beside Mainka, proved his worth in the last campaign after taking Tim Siersleben's place
It's still fair enough to wonder if Wanner, Adrian Beck and Marvin Pieringer can ultimately be to Heidenheim what Beste and Kleindienst represented in terms of attacking production
Five competitive matches played in 2024-25 and five wins is a record hard to quibble with
Undoubtedly the scale of the task gets more difficult in the Friday night flutlichtspiel (game under the lights) in Dortmund
Heidenheim fell behind 2-0 Dortmund within 15 minutes
only to stay in the game through self-belief and ingenuity
before launching a stirring second-half comeback
The 2-2 result was no fluke but rather a reflection of Heidenheim's willingness to run until the end
They are consistently at the top of the Bundesliga's distance-covered statistics
usually more than 122 kilometres per match
They grafted for 123 km in the 0-0 draw at home against BVB in February
and might have won the game had it not been for flabby finishing
It will be fascinating to see if the unlikely Bundesliga leaders can again make it difficult for last season's Champions League runners-up
It would be foolish to opine that they can't

Chelsea will continue their Europa Conference League campaign on Thursday
28 November when they travel to Germany to face Heidenheim
The Blues have made a perfect start to the competition and will be fully expecting to continue that this week given their opponents currently sit in 15th position in the Bundesliga table
While Chelsea fans have travelled to Germany on countless occasions to watch their team in European action
this will be their first visit to Heidenheim and the Voith-Arena
then here is everything you need to know about the Heidenheim away section
A large number of Chelsea fans are expected to travel to the game by car
Some users online pointed to a handy park-and-ride system in the city
An X user had the following advice: “Due to large numbers of Chelsea fans potentially travelling by car to Heidenheim
the use of the Park & Ride possibilities is highly recommended
89522 Heidenheim and Seewiesenbrücke 10
89520 Heidenheim.” It has also been noted that; “Due to the tight traffic situation in Heidenheim
it is strongly recommended that you only leave the A7 motorway at exit 117 Giengen Herbrechtingen.”
a bus often runs from platform 3 of the Heidenheim Central bus station
While the club's origins stretch all the way back to 1847
the current version of the club was only officially formed in 2007 after separating from Heidenheimer Sportbund – a large multi-sports club
This is the first time that the club have ever played in Europe and they qualified after finishing eighth in the Bundesliga last season
this was the club's first-ever season in the German top flight
which made their story something of a fairytale
If it wasn't for Bayer Leverkusen winning the league without losing any games
then Heidenheim would have gained more media attention for their remarkable feat
The club's stadium only has a modest allocation of 15,000 which makes it one of the smallest stadiums in UEFA competition this season but that doesn't mean their fans aren't capable of generating a noisy and intimidating atmosphere
The Heidenhiem away section is in the south-west corner of the stadium
E2 and D2 with the entire section wrapping around the corner
This means some fans will be to the right of the goal while others will be on the side facing the goal
The Heidenheim away section is brilliant in many ways as the club are unable to push away fans far away from the pitch like many other clubs in Europe do
As the entire stadium is just a single tier
fans in the away section are close to the pitch making the view largely very good
The one downside is that the stadium isn't a bowl so there is a gap between the fans in sections E1 and E2 and those in D2
This not only makes it more difficult for the away fans to generate an atmosphere in unison but it also leaves those in D2 with an awkward view of the playing action
The noisiest Heidenheim fans are located behind the opposite goal so fans in the away section generally get a brilliant view of any tifos and displays that their ultras unveil
This club have gone from the 5th tier of German football to a 100% record in the UEFA Conference League…

Heidenheim is a small town in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg in Southern Germany
It is near to Bavaria and has plenty to offer in the form of pubs
Chelsea have been given an allocation of 1,521 which means they will take up roughly 10% of the stadium
this allocation sold out very quickly with fans keen to tick off one of the rarer European away days
Those lucky enough to have obtained Heidenheim vs Chelsea tickets have been informed that there will be a ticket collection policy in place on the day of the match to ensure those who bought the tickets are the ones who are going to use them

In the final Bundesliga match of the weekend
Heidenheim and Hoffenheim played out a 0-0 draw at the Voith-Arena
The first half was devoid of any real chances as both teams were well organized and kept each other at bay
the game opened up and Hoffenheim created the first real chance of the evening when Hoffenheim striker Marius BĂŒlter's shot towards the bottom left corner was kept out by Kevin MĂŒller in the 51st minute
it was Heidenheim who looked the most threatening
with Leo Scienza going close just before the hour mark
taking a couple of nice touches in the box before firing just wide
Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt brought on Maximilian Breunig
who wasted a golden opportunity shortly after coming on
The striker's close-range shot was sensationally saved by Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann
and Paul Wanner blasted the rebound over the crossbar
Baumann's fine reflexes were called into action again a few minutes later when his fingertips kept out a dangerous Scienza shot for a corner
Heidenheim's Sirlord Conteh found himself through on goal
but was denied after taking too long to shoot
not least thanks to Baumann's late heroics
the game ended in a tie that Hoffenheim will probably be happier with than Heidenheim
The draw means that Heidenheim are 10th in the Bundesliga table

FC Union Berlin lost their opening game of Steffen Baumgartâs new reign as head coach
Frans KrÀtzig opened the scoring before Tom Rothe was sent off during the 37th minute
Adrian Beck wrapped things up for the hosts with just over five minutes left to play
In his first competitive game in charge of Union
made four changes to the side which had started the last game before the winter break in Bremen
Alexander Schwolow remained between the sticks in place of the injured Frederik Rönnow
with Leopold Querfeld dropping onto the bench
Aljoscha Kemlein and Janik Haberer were in central midfield â in place of the suspended Rani Khedira and Andras SchĂ€fer respectively
flanked by Wooyeong Jeong on the left-hand side and Robert Skov on the right
This left Benedict Hollerbach and Jordan Siebatcheu â the former in for Tim Skarke
Unionâs strong start cancelled out by KrĂ€tzigâs goal and Rotheâs red card
scored twice during Unionâs 3-1 friendly win over Hallescher FC
The striker was well on his way to claiming his second âUnioner of the Yearâ trophy
Tom Rothe and Aljoscha Kemlein were not yet born; a lot of water has passed under the bridges of the WĂŒhle since then
if his first appearance was under the freezing blue skies of Heidenheim an der Brenz
his start at the helm of Union was not exactly the stuff of fairytales
Diogo Leite summed it up succinctly when he called it an âunlucky defeat⊠We started the game well
found our feet in the new system and showed from the outset that we wanted to impose our game on Heidenheim
Baumgartâs talk of attacking intent in the build up to this game was seriously intended and it was displayed early by Christopher Trimmelâs long pass
The striker was certainly not to hunger for the ball and it took an outstanding stop from Kevin MĂŒller to tip his fierce strike
having held his man off the ball with ease as he turned
particularly the new look four-man defence
Diogo Leite made two crucial interventions early on â the first on Heidenheimâs recently purchased striker
the second on Leonardo Scienza - before Hollerbach fired his first shot on goal
a 25-yard drive that skidded off the turf into the clutches of MĂŒller
it took a barged intervention from Scienza in the box to stop him from getting his head onto the next ball which was fizzed into the box
Union appeared as though they were enjoying themselves
despite the grimace on the face of Janik Haberer following a stamp on his right-foot belying the impression
Leite was a millimetre away from connecting with Jeongâs in-swinging corner on the 15th minute mark
Scienza broke away down the right-hand side
He glanced up as the ground disappeared beneath his gallop
and pulled the ball back to where the debutant
He shot first-time with his left foot from the penalty spot
Alexander Schwolow had no chance as he dived to his right-hand side
Schwolow did at least get his hands onto the next effort to come his way
as Patrick Mainka wrapped his foot around a near-post corner to send it the keeperâs way
but proceedings were now running the way of the hosts
They next tested Union with a free-kick from the edge of the box on the 23rd minute
Unionâs next attacking move came after half-an-hour when once again
Jordan was involved with his back to goal â this time with the ball firmly on the ground
as he flicked it with the outside of his boot to the overlapping Hollerbach
who was ultimately bundled off the ball as he bore down on goal
Jeong then blazed his shot over the bar with his left-foot a couple of minutes later
and the ball sprang out of his control to where the early substitute
despite taking a bit of the ball in the process
wasted no time in showing the youngster a red card
knowing that he could not stop the inevitable
Baumgart was careful not to blame his right-back when he spoke after the final whistle
He said it was something âthat can always happen to a young player: it was a matter of millimetres as to whether Tom would hit the ball or not.â
Heidenheim upped the pressure before the break
though they would make no further breakthrough
Schwolow made two further solid saves â the second
displaying his reflexes by diving smartly to his left-hand side as the first of four added minutes was played out
Baumgart brought former Heidenheim youth player
turning away from the thought of shoring up at the back
it was there that the new man received his first touch
robbing Omar Traore almost from his own goal-line as Heidenheim pushed forward
Traore was now heavily exploiting the space which Rotheâs absence provided â he would shank a shot wide of goal only five minutes later
surely better contact to the ball could have had Union in even more trouble
The guests were all hands-on-deck in the early moments of the second half
the ball flying from head-to-head; they would scrape it away â anywhere
as they did following Kemleinâs delinquent ball out
it took a wonderful stop from MĂŒller to deny Skarke
as he cut inside and let fly to the keeperâs right-hand side
put his header an inch wide of Schwolowâs back post
There were certainly more goals in this yet
Baumgart made his next substitutions after Skov had taken the free-kick that Jordan won by the opposition byline
battling away with every ounce of his strength
It was the American internationalâs last effort however
as Andre Ilic took his place making his Bundesliga debut
He was joined by Kevin Vogt and Lucas Tousart
on for Haberer and Hollerbach respectively
as Union returned to three at the back for the final half-an-hour
As they began to feel the miles within their legs
all-the-while keeping the deficit down to one
before trying to pile some pressure onto Heidenheim during the remaining twenty minutes
As Baumgart skipped up and down the length of his technical area
Skarke won a corner out on the left-hand side
Skov drove a shot towards the back post from 25 yards out
Captain Trimmel was keen to dwell on these moments
âI saw a lot of positive things out on that field
In the short time we've spent with the new coach
there were a few things that were very good
as Marnon Busch drilled a shot from the edge of the box
the ball somehow bounced out of the Union stopperâs grasp
and spun wickedly like a cue-ball in snooker
Schwolowâs relief as he grabbed the ball was easily inferred
Yorbe Vertessen had meanwhile come on for Kemlein
and immediately made a nuisance of himself
as he looked to trick past him and on towards goal as he drifted in from the right-hand side
went two goals to the good up with only eight minutes remaining when Zivzivadze found himself free in front of Schwolow
Unionâs keeper did superbly to parry the shot
however it dropped only as far as the onrushing Adrian Beck â he got to his feet
Baumgart remained optimistic following the final whistle
âHeidenheim scored with a counterattack to make it 1-0
still have possession and still have our shots on goal,â he said
ââŠAll this shows that the boys still have the willpower.â
If it was hardly the romantic start that many may have imagined after over twenty years away
he will be forgiven for thinking that his return to the Alte Försterei on Wednesday evening could provide a night of a very different kind
Heidenheim host Premier League giants Chelsea in the Uefa Conference League on Thursday
the latest milestone in the German club's rapid rise from fifth division to European football
few Germans would have known much about the club from the 50 000-strong town of Heidenheim an der Brenz
located in southern Germany between Munich and Stuttgart
Two-time Champions League winners Chelsea are a symbol not only of Premier League largesse
Chelsea's American owners are estimated to have spent more than one billion euros on transfers alone
The magnitude of the unlikely journey is not lost on Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt, who has been with the club all the way from the non-professional ranks.
In an interview with AFP, he said the idea of welcoming Chelsea to Heidenheim's 15 000-seat Voith Arena on Thursday would have been "unthinkable" just a few months ago.
"But in the end, that is now the case," he said. "We've earned this through our strong debut season in the Bundesliga."
"It will be a special evening that our club and our fans deserve."
Schmidt's story is so intertwined with that of Heidenheim, it is inseparable.
With Heidenheim in the fifth division of German football, Schmidt became coach just after retiring from the club as a player in 2007, agreeing to do so for a two-week period only.
Since then, he has driven the club up the German football pyramid until a first-ever promotion to the top flight before the 2023-24 season.
In the time Schmidt has been in charge at Heidenheim, German giants Bayern Munich have gone through 12 different coaches, while winning 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.
In September 2023, on his 16th anniversary at the club, he became the longest serving coach in Bundesliga history and celebrated with a 4-2 win over Werder Bremen, Heidenheim's debut top-flight victory.
Upon their arrival in the Bundesliga, they were widely tipped for a swift relegation. Schmidt not only kept them up but piloted them to eighth spot and a Europa Conference League placing.
One of the many highlights of their first top-flight season was coming from two goals down to beat Bayern 3-2 at home in April.
With plenty taking notice of Heidenheim's sharp rise, the club's next challenge was to rebuild after several key players were picked off in the summer.
Winger Jan-Niklas Beste, who last season became the club's first player called up for Germany, moved to Benfica.
Tim Kleindienst, who has since made his Germany debut and has two goals in four games, left for Borussia Moenchengladbach.
"It was clear we could not replace these players one-on-one, because they were key players for us. You can see that with Tim Kleindienst, who is now a German international and has played for Germany from the start in the past few games."
Without the money to bring in big name stars, Heidenheim brought in a mix of experienced lower division players and young talents.
One such talent is Bayern loanee Paul Wanner, who has five goals and two assists in all competitions this season.
Still just 18, Wanner has shown so much promise he is already subject to a tug-of-war between Germany and Austria.
While acknowledging the ebbs and flows that come with playing while still a teenager, Schmidt recognises Wanner's quality.
"If his development continues like this and he stays injury free, he can go all the way to the top."
Heidenheim started the Bundesliga season on fire and were top of the table after two rounds, before falling back to earth and now sit 15th.
In the Conference League however, they are one of six teams, including Chelsea, to have won three from three.
"Chelsea are the absolute favourites and anything other than winning the Conference League would be a huge surprise. They have incredible individual quality and potential (and are) third in the Premier League."
Despite being "clear underdogs", Schmidt said his team can pull off a huge surprise of their own.
"We have to fight back with a strong mentality to have a chance."

the subject of heated debate â a historical enigma once praised by Winston Churchill himself as âa very daring and skillful opponent.â
Born in the town of Heidenheim an der Brenz in 1891
young Erwin Rommel came from a middle-class family
was the daughter of a local city councilor
His proficiency in strategy no doubt stemmed from his analytical and mathematical mind
Despite his desire to become an aeronautical engineer
Rommelâs father urged his son to go into military service
Rommel would become the first in his family to remain in the military long term
Though he was initially rejected by the engineering and artillery divisions of the army
in 1910 the 18-year-old Rommel was accepted as a cadet in the German infantry
He was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1912
and in 1914 he joined the 124th WĂŒrttemberg Infantry Regiment
This would be the beginning of his highly successful and decorated military career
during which Rommel became known for both his bravery and cunning
His efforts during the WWI earned him an Iron Cross and the Pour le Mérite
while Rommel was posted as battalion commander
Hitlerâs charisma and promises to reestablish Germany as a world power after the crippling results of World War I inspired Rommel to become a fervent supporter of the Nazi Party
The two men had several encounters following this
and Rommel rose through the ranks on Hitlerâs personal recommendation
But it was ultimately Hitlerâs liking for Rommelâs book Infantry Attacks that led to his becoming the commander of Hitlerâs personal guards during his tour of the Sudetenland
Hitler and Rommelâs relationship was an interesting and somewhat fickle one
Rommel flouted direct orders from the Fuhrer
Hitler sent Rommel to command the German Afrika Korps and help the Italian army against the British troops in North Africa
Rommel turned the situation around for the Axis Powers
which is how he earned the name âDesert Fox.â He was also promoted from Major General to Field Marshal
When the Afrika Korps went up against the Free French forces at Bir Hakeim
Hitler insisted that the French were renegades guilty of treason and were not to be captured but executed
Rommel never passed this command on to his men
the British finally overwhelmed Rommel and his troops near El Alamein in Egypt
Hitler demanded that Rommel and his men âshow them no other road than that to victory or death.â
he elected to spare his men from being massacred
The Allies respected his battle tactics and the fact that he led from the front
His men viewed him as a moral and humane leader
The âRommel Mythâ was further perpetuated by the British press
which sought to portray the British troops as fighting in North Africa against a noble foe â largely because they couldnât defeat him for some time
When Rommel was implicated in a plot to kill Hitler
though many historians refute this heroism entirely
Personal accounts from officers stationed in North Africa with Rommel have suggested that he was not entirely pro-Nazi
Rudolf Schneider was a young Afrika Korps soldier who served under Rommel during the North Africa campaign
said: âWhen the propaganda photographs were taken of our unit
they would drape Swastika flags over the vehicles
Rommel would order the Swastikas to be taken away
âHe didnât like Nazi insignia and took it off
Just how much did he know about Hitlerâs âFinal Solutionâ
One can speculate that as one of Hitlerâs most senior officers
surely he would have been privy to that kind of information
There is also the burning question of Rommelâs knowledge of Einsatzgruppe
an SS death squad that was on standby to be deployed with the sole purpose of killing Jews in Palestine en masse
They were intended to be attached to the Afrika Korps
but Rommel was defeated at El Alamein before they could join his troops
Only Rommel himself could enlighten us as to what his real motivation was
Many historians suggest that he was simply an ambitious soldier who chose to overlook Nazi atrocities in the interest of advancing his career
a manhunt was launched for the perpetrators
Thousands of potential suspects were arrested and brutally interrogated
Several confessions â more than likely delivered under extreme duress â implicated Rommel
Some claimed that he was simply aware of the plot but didnât act
while others claimed he was directly involved
Hitler received word of all the âevidenceâ that pointed to Rommel
At the time Rommel was recovering from serious head injuries
the result of a car crash due to a Spitfire attack
Hitler was aware of Rommelâs almost universal popularity and status as a hero
and decided to handle the matter quietly for diplomatic purposes
His envoys gave Rommel the âoptionâ of committing suicide to save his family from torture or death
Rommel bid farewell to his wife and children
He was driven away from his home by his military escorts
the majority of historians believe that Rommel had absolutely no knowledge of the plot to kill Hitler
then at least to the institution of the German military â until his death
From 1961 to 2013 in the German town of Heidenheim an der Brenz
a memorial to Field Marshal Erwin Rommel stood unashamedly up on a hill
an imposing stony presence in an otherwise unobtrusive town
The words inscribed on the monument called Rommel âUpright
chivalrous and brave until his death as a victim of tyranny.â
It was only in 2011 that protests over a memorial erected to a Nazi officer led to it being defaced
historians and even representatives of the Afrika Korps
The inscription on the stone reads: âAt this place
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was forced to commit suicide
He took the poison cup and sacrificed himself to save his familyâs life from Hitlerâs Nazi henchmen.â
A noble epitaph for an enigmatic and ambiguous historical figure
The historical picture of the Desert Fox is a patchy tapestry of contradictory accounts and myth
Read another story from us:Â Loss at FaĂŻd Pass: I Watched Tank After Tank Blown to Bits or Burst into Flames
His heirs and many Rommel enthusiasts would have us believe that he was a mighty and just Desert Fox
while author and historian Wolfgang Proske
claims he was a dedicated anti-Semite and even used Jewish slave labor
There is often a double standard in historical accounts that chooses to forget faults in favor of creating lasting legends or tales to tell
Could it be that this is the case with Field Marshal Erwin Rommel

As evidenced by a massive choreo display organized by fans paying tribute to their head-coach of 17 years, Heidenheim's home Conference League fixture against Chelsea FC was more of an "event" than a result.
As it so happens, a spirited performance by the team left both the fans and the coach in a good mood. Schmidt's post-match comments stood in stark contrast to the manner in which he chastised his team after their last defeat.
Chelsea goal-scorers [Christopher Nkunku and Mykhailo Mudryk] cost âŹ100 million and âŹ80 million," Schmidt remarked with a tone of resignation when speaking to German broadcaster RTL
"He was a machine that sucked the balls in," Schmidt said of Chelsea keeper Filip Jörgensen's performance
"We still left our hearts on the pitch and were close to scoring an equalizer," Schmidt was quick to add
"It says a lot that Chelsea had to come here and play us until the end."
"My team played really well," Schmidt concluded
we'll pick up points before the winter break
I can accept defeats like this."

Excitement is building ahead of Heidenheim's maiden European campaign after the Bundesliga club beat BK HĂ€cken 5-3 on aggregate to qualify for the UEFA Conference League
a remarkable achievement for a club that was in the fifth tier of German football in 2008
After an impressive eighth-place finish in the Bundesliga last season
Heidenheim have lost three of their key players in Jan-Niklas Beste
Frank Schmidt's men have made an impressive start to the new campaign and are sixth in the table after bouncing back from two defeats in a row with a 2-0 win over Mainz at the weekend
Slovenian capital side NK Olimpija Ljubjana
have every reason to be confident as they're on a 21-match unbeaten run in all competitions heading into Germany
They made it through three qualifying rounds to the Conference League
Heidenheim will be hoping that Leo Scienza and Mathias Honsak have recovered from injuries that kept them out of the win over Mainz
Niklas Dorsch is available despite seeing red in that win
while Julian Niehues is the only certain absentee for the Germans
The Slovenian visitors appear to have no injury concerns
