I was just very much inspired by Adam and his blog. The aesthetic of the pictures was part of it And the constant change of looks — along with the surroundings the countries — as much as the people he hung out with gave us the feeling it could be really strong visually I assume it would have looked more “naturalistic” and less exciting if we simply went with a handheld camera that followed him around So early on we made the decision to go with set framings — we called it “performance shots” — where he would look in the camera almost like highly stylized versions of a selfie Plus we tried to capture the everyday life in arranged tableaus rather than in moving closeups but also a decision to tie the visual form to what we wanted to express We tried to capture his life in a way where you cannot be totally sure how much is performance We wanted these questions to be part of the experience a construct.” This made sense for us as Adam said the same about the very idea of identity Filmmaker: While most documentarians cite time spent with their characters as crucial to building trust you had your shooting team follow Adam around the world before you’d ever even met him in person How did knowing your protagonist only through those online musings affect your own filmmaking process Hellenthal: It is true that we started to shoot straight away without the usual careful meetings to build trust We had a feeling he would not mind if the camera was on or not ”I don’t understand this concept of privacy If you behave like an ass and do not want to be public with that We read Adam’s blog every day during the time of shooting We could take out the parts that excited us the most We would read what was happening in his life and if it fit with what we were trying to express we met up and shot — even if that meant going to Mexico Sometimes Adam would also leave us little hints on the blog We actually learned how he felt about the shoot and us that way During both the shooting and the editing he would always leave little synopses of the film online — in this phase where we were still totally in the dark as to how the film would turn out (One ended up in the film quite close to the end “This is a documentary about a girl…” Also “the reason why they made a movie out of my life is that one day im shooting up in a public toilet and the next im bleaching my teeth in a jacuzzi” (2017) ”A film about a girl on a process of self abolishment The girl isn’t me cause representation is a lie Filmmaker: How did you get the financing for this globetrotting project The concept of trailing an Instagram star who wanders aimlessly around just seems like it might be a difficult sell Hellenthal: In the beginning I used my own money to shoot a first block which we edited into a sort of “teaser.” And we spent a lot of time developing a concept that sounded good It is true that in the beginning we were ridiculed by many people who were like ”Why do you care about this narcissistic internet chick?” We would not show the teaser to anyone that we did not completely trust not until we felt there was a solid written concept For us the film was very philosophical and political and we knew the written concept needed to express this [or] else the “surface” would be judged too quickly Once we had that we applied for a development fund (Gerd Ruge Stipendium) We have a very good film fund (Film und Medienstiftung NRW) in North Rhine-Westphalia They support young experimental filmmaking and later on a big chunk of production money My producers are well connected and respected in the documentary world we worked quite hard to be taken seriously in the beginning I guess what sold it in the end was the usual — the sex work the “modern touch” of the internet era Filmmaker: Adam doesn’t believe in the concept of privacy which makes him both incredibly accessible and constantly performative Did you ever worry about getting too much style and not enough substance Hellenthal: I cannot remember having this fear during the shoot because I always felt there was some big existential question behind it This idea of deconstructing identity felt universal We’d spend hours racking our brains about it But when we started to edit with our first editor — we later switched to work with Yana Höhnerbach — I was confronted with this doubt that the material would not transmit substance It turned out to be a very long and hard process We first had to get to the bottom of what we were trying to express and then to find the “practical way” of doing that — by manifesting it in the form of the editing rather than it staying an abstract thought experiment so I’m guessing the editing may have been a bit tough How did you put all the pieces of this protagonist’s scattershot life together to create a cohesive whole Hellenthal: We really racked our brains about this I think the first push in the right direction happened during a workshop at dok.incubator where I was questioned and it really helped us to unlock many things Our tutor Joelle Alexis also gave us a wonderful tip She said to treat all the elements — voiceover as we all knew there could not be a classical narrative to carry us through and we started to find this mechanism of scenes voice — all circling around topics rather than following a cohesive and chronological narrative All of the topics — from work to body to gender — connected to identity we would never just put it in as a background story We’d tie it to the topic of “work” and draw a larger narrative about it At some point we also understood that the comments were almost functioning as an antagonist as it is the gaze — the audience’s gaze — on Adam that develops throughout the film rather than Adam himself So we ultimately used this as the thread to guide us All A 35-year-old Cazadero man was killed near his home and his girlfriend badly injured when a pickup they were in rolled down a steep embankment and landed on its roof Friday night, emergency personnel said. Seth Hellenthal died not far from his family vineyard at the end of Bohan Dillon Road, where the slopes are planted in pinot noir grapes farmed by the Hellenthal family. The wreck was not discovered until around 11 a.m. Saturday just across the road from Hellenthal Vineyards, Redcom dispatcher Dave Bertrand said. Hellenthal's father called in the crash, dispatchers said. “Great expectations were missed, because he was a great kid,” Gard Hellenthal said of his son late Saturday. The CHP said Seth Hellenthal's 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 plummeted 465 feet, tumbling off the west edge of Bohan Dillon Road at a point where the dead-end lane is narrow and unpaved. The road winds past farms, vineyards and wineries on one side, and “just a sheer drop, like hundreds of feet” on the other, CHP Officer Will Brown said. It was unclear what caused the vehicle to leave the road. It was rainy and foggy out when the crash occurred, about 9:30 p.m., according to the CHP. Brown said there were no obvious signs that the driver was impaired. The passenger, Kate Wilmore, 29, also of Cazadero, suffered a compound leg fracture, but somehow managed to crawl out of the vehicle and climb up the embankment, dispatchers said. “She laid down in the road way and waited for help to come, which didn't come until 11 this morning,” Brown said. Investigators had yet to interview her, he said. Gard Hellenthal said she was in surgery Saturday night, but he thought she would be all right. “She was in pretty rough shape when we first saw her,” he said. Timber Cove and Fort Ross firefighters responded to the crash. Wilmore was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by the Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter, dispatchers said. to 10 years in prison after entering Alford pleas to involuntary manslaughter and a handgun charge in a 2014 case that left one man dead and another paralyzed in a botched drug robbery in Hagerstown and you take your chances," Circuit Judge M incident that occurred in a small community parking lot off the 200 block of Frederick Street In addition to receiving five years for involuntary manslaughter Diaz also must serve five years without parole for possession of a handgun in a drug-related crime An Alford plea is not an admission of guilt but an acknowledgment by a defendant that the prosecution has sufficient evidence to get a conviction criticized the state's "upside-down" prosecution of the case telling the judge that prosecutors wanted the longest sentence for the person least culpable of all those involved Hagerstown police were called to Frederick Street for a report of shots fired shortly after 8 p.m of Frederick dying of two gunshots wounds to the torso and a third to the chin according to Assistant State's Attorney Gina Cirincion paralyzed from a bullet wound to the spine Diaz later was driven to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown with gunshot wounds to his chest and wrist Diaz told police he had agreed to buy 3 pounds of Canadian marijuana from a friend named "Frodo," later determined to be 26-year-old Robert Ludwig Hellenthal Diaz drove to Hagerstown with $7,500 for the drugs and a $500 "finder's fee" for Hellenthal Hellenthal is listed in court documents as being from Keymar Diaz was pushed back and grabbed around the throat by one person and pistol-whipped while another entered from the passenger's side and tried to push the barrel of a handgun into his mouth Diaz initially told police that he grabbed a handgun from the waistband of one of his assailants but later admitted to investigators that he had borrowed the .38-caliber handgun from another person before driving to Hagerstown The prosecutor said that the order in which the shots were fired was never determined but that the "wad-cutter" bullets that killed Lee were consistent with the ammunition in the .38-caliber revolver The bullet in Wolkill's spine could not be removed for analysis Diaz told investigators that one of his assailants was crawling away when he fired at him Diaz was shot with a 9 mm handgun like the one police found at the scene Diaz removed the $8,000 from the trunk of his car and was driven to the hospital by Hellenthal she noted that earlier in the day Diaz had made two $4,500 deposits into bank accounts registered to another person Salvatore asked Long to impose a shorter sentence noting that Wolfkill got eight years in prison after entering guilty pleas to attempted robbery and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon whom Salvatore said conspired with Wolfkill to commit the robbery got a "sweetheart plea deal" of five years with all but about four months of time served suspended after he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter The shooting of Lee and Wolfkill was an act of self-defense by Diaz who was set up for the robbery by the other people involved "He had a right to defend himself," Salvatore said But Long noted that Diaz also brought a gun to the expected drug transaction She pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing or hindering police and received a suspended sentence She had attempted to hide Wolfkill's handgun from police By Alyssa Botelho Major episodes in history like the rise and fall of the Mongol empire have left indelible marks on our genes A new genetic study of people alive today shows how our ancestors interbred over the past 4000 years and links these events to the appearance of empires Garrett Hellenthal of University College London and colleagues have pinpointed the impacts of historical migrations and invasions on our DNA As well as identifying the imprint of well-known mixing episodes like the Arab slave trade they have found clues to unknown mixing events including people who may be the descendants of Alexander the Great’s army Some of the Kalash people of Pakistan claim descent from the soldiers of Alexander the Great If history records that groups of people once met and interbred geneticists can use the DNA of modern peoples to work out when it most likely happened or which populations are descended from that event because they rely on historical records that are often incomplete Now Hellenthal has developed a genetic technique that independently identifies the date of interbreeding and the groups involved “We’ve tried to develop an objective means of reading DNA without having any sort of historical preconceptions,” Hellenthal says Hellenthal combed the DNA sequences of 1490 people from 95 groups living in different parts of the world He then identified how much DNA the people of any one group had in common with members of any other group The more chunks of DNA two populations shared the more closely related they are – while the longer those shared chunks were the more recently the ancestors of those populations had interbred The genetics confirms claims by other researchers that the raping and pillaging committed by Genghis Khan and his Mongol army had a genetic impact across Asia Bits of Mongolian DNA are shared by six populations from north-east Asia to as far west as Turkey They acquired these genes between 1250 and 1300 when the Mongol empire had conquered most of Asia and was encroaching on Europe also left a signature in the genes of 17 groups living in north Africa All carry genes from enslaved populations from sub-Saharan Africa the Mediterranean groups share more DNA with people from west Africa while the Persian Gulf groups share more with people from the east This matches what historians suspect were the main routes used by the slave trade Some genetic mixing events were more mysterious. The researchers found a genetic signal in the Tu people of modern China that seems to have begun around 1200 and to have come from a European population similar to modern Greeks. That could have been the result of Western merchants travelling the Silk Road The oldest mixing event the team found came from the Kalash, who live in the mountains of north-west Pakistan. Around 200 BC, they seem to have mixed with an as-yet unknown population, which was most similar to people from north-west Europe and west Asia. That gives a little credence to the Kalash’s long-cherished belief that they are descendants of Alexander the Great’s army “The DNA signal and date would not refute the idea though there are of course other possibilities,” Hellenthal says Journal reference: Science, DOI: 10.1126/science.1243518 Quantum mechanical tunneling enables Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy to image and manipulate features down to the single atom scale Using the apparatus in a different way – extracting information from a distance/voltage trace instead of the conventionally used current/voltage trace – high quality measurements results were obtained ‘While performing experiments during this thesis project I was surprised on finding tunneling phenomena in liquid environments,’ says Chris Hellenthal The front cover of his thesis - titled “Material characterisation by means of alternative scanning tunnelling spectroscopy tools” - is a 3D representation of a copper sample depicting the rectangular shapes Chris Hellenthal was searching for ‘I am very fond of these beautiful pictures I worked on for quite some time though they are not central in my thesis work,’ he says ‘The specific step structure arises because of a chemical process only possible by using electrochemical STM averagely sized a few hundreds of nanometers by several tens of nanometers I remember measuring these images as one of the key moments of my PhD.’ Another memorable moment was positioned some months before the very end of his work as a PhD Chris worked on alternative STS methods allowing him to perform experiments in electrochemical environments unhindered by strict vacuum conditions or special hardware interventions ‘While performing experiments in water and alcohol based liquid environments and very glad being able to characterize the exponential features corroborating the tunneling effect was actually there.’ Here again the preparations for the experiments were the main part of the huge scientific efforts Chris had to undertake the actual measurements only took two afternoons Chris: ‘In order to analyze the data properly and come up with a coherent story for the last chapter I was allowed to work on that in some extra time.’ Chris published his findings in leading journals such as: Physical Review Letters B His first publication was a paper based on results obtained during his master’s assignment working for the Physics of Interfaces and Nanomaterials (PIN) group already at that moment Chris: ‘During the PhD period my work shifted towards performing measurements using scanning tunneling methods as an independent researcher I was able to explore the physical boundaries and extended my knowledge towards electrochemical layers and samples adding complexity as compared to performing experiments under vacuum conditions The collaboration with the Mesoscale Chemical Systems group also contributed to further widen my horizon.’ Thinking about his future career Chris prefers a promising research environment in industry to a tough tenure track position in academics ‘It would be a pity to be distracted too much from actual research by fringe activities such as writing research proposals and teaching obligations At this moment I prefer to go and work for a medium or small sized spin-off company has developed various exciting expertise products that appeal to me In Eindhoven I also found some interesting companies I would be happy to apply.’ Michelle Renee DeHaan and Eric Matthew Daniels exchanged marriage vows on April 4 at North Holland Reformed Church in Holland Joshua Van Leeuwen and music was provided by Terri Drooger and Allison Brower Julie Hellenthal was the maid of honor and bridesmaids were Erin Smith The best man was Dan Opp and groomsmen were Jeremy Smith Kellcey and Emma DeHaan were the flower girls The ceremony was followed by a reception at Trestle Stop in Hamilton with Brian and Renee Bekius and Brandon and Kristy Bekius serving as attendants The couple took their wedding trip to Canada Their parents are Jon and Barbara DeHaan of Holland The bride is a graduate of West Ottawa High School and Davenport University She is employed by the City of Zeeland Police Department The groom is a graduate of Santa Fe Trail High School in Kansas and Davenport University He is employed by Americal Medical Response and Grand Haven Township Fire Department IL – A Yorkville man was arrested this week in connection with an alleged murder-for-hire plot to kill his former wife after being charged with Solicitation of Murder following an investigation by the Yorkville Police Department Authorities were alerted to the plot on April 9th when Hellenthal reportedly attempted to hire an individual to kill his ex-wife The suspect provided the individual with specific details about the victim’s residence and access points Yorkville Police acted quickly to ensure the victim’s safety during the investigation an undercover officer posing as a hitman contacted Hellenthal Hellenthal allegedly offered cash and jewelry as payment for the murder with the assistance of the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team (CPAT) located Hellenthal at his workplace in Downers Grove Hellenthal was transported to the Kendall County Jail and remains in custody awaiting a detention hearing scheduled for April 11th Hellenthal is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law The burden of proof rests with the prosecution to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt Be sure to follow us on Instagram & like us on Facebook to stay up-to-date on more relevant news stories and SUPPORT LOCAL INDEPENDENT NEWS Have something you’d like to let us know about Message us on our social channels and let us know about it Log in to leave a comment This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.
