Danish contemporary artist Thyra Hilden challenges traditional artistic representations of femininity in her latest exhibition
‘Ride the Tiger,’ opening March 28 at Gallery MAXUS101 in Copenhagen
The exhibition features a series of monumental works that transform canvas into dynamic
three-dimensional objects exploring feminine power and agency
Hilden’s artistic approach deconstructs the traditional canvas
and reshaping it into provocative vulva-shaped forms that are neither pure painting nor sculpture
These works are not passive representations but vital expressions of feminine strength that insist on self-definition
Gallery owner Anthon Maxus contextualized Hilden’s work within a significant artistic tradition
drawing comparisons to influential artists like Hannah Wilke
Her approach follows these predecessors while simultaneously charting a new artistic direction
Known previously for her international ‘City on Fire’ projects that virtually set cultural monuments ablaze
Hilden has now channeled her fascination with dialectical forces into a more intimate and materialized form
The exhibition includes both large-scale pieces and smaller wall objects that demonstrate her versatility across different scales and materials
‘Ride the Tiger,’ references the Hindu goddess Durga
a powerful female deity who symbolizes creative and protective energy
This mythological connection underscores the exhibition’s exploration of feminine power as a force capable of challenging and transforming oppressive systems
Hilden creates works that are both aesthetically compelling and conceptually rich
almost flesh-like forms and employing materials like gold
she imbues her art with layers of symbolic meaning about creation
‘Ride the Tiger’ represents a significant phase in Hilden’s artistic development
offering viewers a nuanced and powerful examination of feminine creative energy
The exhibition runs from March 28 to May 11

thanks to money raised by National Lottery players
we’re proud to support Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council as it embarks on the preservation and repurposing of one of the few surviving mill schools in Northern Ireland.

Olaf College alumni and married couple Autumn Berggren Hilden ’99 and Justin Hilden ’01 are currently working in Los Angeles
Autumn is a freelance writer and editor whose clients include Disney Publishing Worldwide and The Jim Henson Company
Justin is Creative Director at Makefully Studios
As part of the Career Conversations series, which highlights the paths Oles take after college, Autumn and Justin sat down for a conversation with Piper Center for Vocation and Career Associate Director of Alumni Career Services Jenele Grassle
Justin: Definitely the first time I saw Autumn
my favorite memory is working on my senior film in the old art barn
when it was located outside of Flaten Hall
Justin: In January, I started as Creative Director of Makefully Studios
My daily work consists of drawing and animation
and overall I am helping develop both original shows and content for clients
Justin: I grew up knowing I wanted to work in animation
After years of animating in my parents’ basement and watching behind-the-scenes content on VHS tapes
I got my first job in animation by moving to Chicago and turning a tour of a studio there into a de facto interview
From there I moved to LA and started by working at a See’s Candy store
By luck the Chicago studio also later relocated to LA
I was there for many years and then stepped back from production
I wanted to stay in entertainment and continue to use my art skills
Makefully Studios reached out right when I was looking to take a new risk
Justin: One positive change I have noticed is a trend toward a diversity of creators
it has been white and male for so long (me included)
it’s such a powerful force of female voices and perspectives from people of color
That richness is something that has been missing from the industry and is finally coming into play
and color theory are the things I use most often
Olaf art professor] Wendell Arneson in my head when I choose colors
it’s not necessarily “knowing more.” It’s just spending more time honing my drawing skills
I see some of the art that has come out of Disney animation in their Renaissance era
and it is staggeringly beautiful and full of life
I would love to get to that point of communicating intense emotion while using the simple lines that characterize my personal style
Autumn: You hang out in that neighborhood already
your drawing has taken on a really emotional bent
but then what ends up happening is forty books about vampires
Justin: The homogenization of animated films really frustrates me
It’s really invigorating to see those embers of hope and to stoke them
Like pour a whole gallon of gasoline on them
We need that spark of fresh voices and new perspectives
I’m encouraged that young people are still excited about good drawing and thoughtful design
Justin: The most difficult thing for me is time management
so it’s become especially important for me to keep a firm and effective schedule
I also try to let myself be finished as soon as I’m satisfied with my work
Autumn: I remember how much we freaked out when that series aired
People still find you online and ask about it
My favorite work is some travel writing I did
It was an unexpected chapter but a great fit
as I am obsessed with Disney parks and had an opportunity to put my passion to use with a few weekly columns I did over a couple of years
I’m always really proud of how voice-y they are
I have a little network of writers whom I met through a writing group I started
I basically put up a notice on a writing website
inviting total strangers to my house to read and write together and give feedback
It’s really a couple people from that group that I trust for feedback on my writing now
Any suggestions for other Oles?Justin: Just keep in mind you are more than what you do
even if your work is a personal extension of yourself
which is the way it tends to be for creative people
Autumn: I’d add on a practical level that we tend to have a quitting time
Not that we don’t sometimes stay up late working on something if we’re really in the zone
we made a pact never to work while the other person is sleeping
I think that has probably preserved and added to our relationship
and most people will sideline themselves out of psychological fatigue
you’ll find yourself where you want to be
To be balanced with the quitting time advice from above
we definitely should have got this going a little bit sooner
One thing I would not wait for is to try fiction writing
and at that point I didn’t want to try things unless I knew I’d be the best at them
It turns out that fiction and non-fiction both bring me a lot of joy

The Liverpool-based developer has submitted a planning application to turn the vacant Hilden House office building into 100 one-bed apartments
Savills is advising on planning and heritage
with architect Falconer Chester Hall and structural engineer Clancy also key to the project
Hilden House enjoys a prime position opposite Warrington’s Georgian town hall and the 17-acre Bank Park
Caro Developments’ proposals would come under permitted development rights
with Caro managing director Neil Carlyle committing to begin work immediately
“This is a superb location that will allow us to provide high-specification homes that contribute towards the council’s strategy of boosting the number of town centre residents
“We will set a new benchmark for quality and for rental levels and will begin work promptly on receipt of consent.”
The 52,400 sq ft building rises to five storeys
with an exposed white concrete frame and dark brick cladding
Its position within the Town Hall Conservation Area means any façade modifications will have to be sympathetic to the surrounding area
associate director at architect FCH said: “The building offers us a pleasing urban aesthetic with scope to use updated fenestration to give it a very contemporary feel amidst the redbrick palette of the surrounding streets
“It’s a very sustainable location and by utilising adaptive reuse we’ll reduce the environmental impact of the project through the generation of less waste and reduced demand for energy.”
The development would offer 58 car parking spaces and cycle and bin storage to the rear
Hilden House was previously used by the Department for Work and Pensions
The building was acquired from Elite UK Real Estate Investment Trust in November 2024 for £3.3m
Other Caro projects include a 250-flat student accommodation scheme in Liverpool’s Fabric District with TJ Morris, approved last summer
and a previously stalled project off Vauxhall Road
The housebuilder has acquired a site in Hollins Green
where it secured detailed consent for 110 homes in February
The deal could pave the way for 4,200 homes south-east of the town and brings the agency’s land holdings in the area to 617 acres in total
