SHELBY — Once among North Carolina’s most feared pass rushers
Jack Hollifield may soon be doing his part to keep Virginia Tech quarterbacks clean
Days from reporting to his first summer camp with the Hokies
Hollifield was on the Shelby High practice field Monday preparing for an anticipated move to center
“It’s coming along well,” the Virginia Tech freshman football player said
become more consistent with my snapping and just moving more like a lineman
That’s something I’m not really used to.”
Hollifield helped Shelby to a pair of state titles as a star defensive lineman and linebacker
he finished with 369 career tackles to go with 18 sacks
three fumble recoveries and an interception return for a touchdown.
While Hollifield was recruited to Virginia Tech as a tight end
Hokies football coach Justin Fuente said the move to offensive line allows the team to better utilize Hollifield’s athleticism
“We think he has some natural instincts
but he’s gained weight and moves well,” Fuente said
“He went from being one of the least athletic guys we had at tight end and linebacker
to one of our more athletic guys on the offensive line
We couldn’t be more pleased about his prospects down the road.”

Hollifield agrees, believing his versatility is what made him a prime candidate for a position change.
“They made the choice because I am versatile, playing first on the defensive line and then at linebacker,” he said. “I played a little tight end too. They know I can make the transition and get the job done. I also have the body type. I’m built more like a lineman anyway, I’m a bigger kid. So once I put on the added weight, I think everything will be fine.
“There aren’t many linemen who I think would be as athletic as me. I don’t think many linemen grew up running hurdle events like me, playing linebacker or tight end. It will kind of give me an advantage when I do get my opportunity.”
Hollifield also credits current Virginia Tech offensive lineman and Statesville native Brock Hoffman with his development thus far. “He’s really taken me under his wing a bit and taught me some things that will help in the long run,” the former Shelby standout added.
Holding the belief projecting playing time this far from Week 1 to be unfair, Fuente said “you just never know.”
“We haven’t actually seen him play the position, but love the direction he is headed,” the Virginia Tech head man said. “You just never know, especially after last year. If it’s anything like last season, people can be pushed into playing time.”
He hopes to leave a similar impression on the program currently being left by older brother and former Shelby High standout Dax Hollifield. A junior linebacker, Dax Hollifield has 182 career tackles, 5.5 sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery during his time in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Sergey Sologub's new exhibition at Hay Hill Gallery promises to be a surreal fusion of ordinary landscapes and still-life, seen through a filter of science fiction. At first glance, these compositions appear meticulous with their technical skill and careful symmetry; on closer inspection, paradoxical angles emerge to disorient and unsettle the viewer.
The artist clearly has a love of steam-shrouded locomotives and floating Venetian islands- disguising a mischievous spirit within an atmosphere of hushed reverence, as though he were a mystic. All may seem perfectly normal- until you realise that there is a giant paper aeroplane settled in the desert landscape; or that houses are blooming from the dusty patterns of an elaborate Persian rug. His recurring themes are futuristic and ancient all at once.
Like Marco Polo returning to Kublai Khan with tall tales of unknown lands, Sologub unfurls his fantastical stories in exaggerated detail and clever sleight of hand. With the flawless technique of an old master- and a child’s uninhibited imagination- Island hints at the magical realism of those would-be-worlds.
Jack Hollifield is a Linebacker from Shelby, NC.
