UPM Communication Papers has finalised negotiations with employee representatives on the announced closure of the Hürth paper mill and the capacity reduction at Nordland Papier
The company announced that its Hürth newsprint mill will be closed on 31 August 2024
the PM 3 fine paper machine at Nordland Papier will cease production by the end of this year at the latest
A total of 338 employees will be affected by the implementation of the plans
UPM will thus reduce its production capacity by 330,000 tpy of newsprint and 280,000 tpy of uncoated fine paper
In May, UPM announced plans to further cut graphic paper capacity
This measure is in response to the accelerated decline in demand for printing and writing paper
which threatens to exacerbate the existing oversupply in Europe
The announcement to shut down the Hürth plant came as a surprise as UPM only just started up a new biomass plant in Hürth in Q1 2024
