Golfers who enjoy hitting the links at Husum Hills Golf Course should get it while they can as plans to close the course as of May 1 are in motion
Owners Don and Heidi Struck say they’ve tried to sell Husum Hills as a golf course for two and a half years and are now in talks with Klickitat County about their plan to sell it as small-scale phased residential property
western Klickitat County’s premier golf course is set to close this spring
Husum Hills Golf Course located serenely off of Highway 141 was originally developed in 1964
Its nine holes on 47 acres nestled among the rolling hills and pines of western Klickitat County were purchased by Don and Heidi Struck in 1994
“It’s like losing a part of the family,” Don Struck said
The Strucks started looking into selling the golf course as a whole about two and a half years ago when they determined it wasn’t financially viable to keep it open
keeping it a golf course following their ownership was important to the Strucks
but it ended up just not being in the cards
“I had lots of people that had the same vision we did
but nobody with the money to go forward,” Don said
“That’s the reason we bought it and that’s the reason we really wanted it to stay a golf course
It’s just a tough financial business right now.”
Don has noted that Husum Hills never “carried itself financially” and that he relied heavily on the help of his family to keep things running smoothly
With three of his daughters in college next year
he knew it was time to start looking at other options
“We always felt it was so important to the community and we just did the best we could using family labor,” he said
the Strucks have three parcels for sale in the vicinity of Husum Hills that are between an acre and a half and two acres each
The Strucks are currently in talks with the Klickitat County Planning Department regarding options for a 10- or 15-year plan for small-scale
phased residential development of the 47 acres
There’s a lot of planning and research that has to happen,” said Heidi Struck
Husum Hills will remain open to the public through May 1 on the same honor system it always has
Players can still leave $10 in the lock box near the pro shop and then hit the links
but the Strucks both said members of the community can still use it after that if they want
“We won’t keep people from going out and playing if they want to play
It’s just not going to be manicured like it always has been
Once we have to start irrigating it’s overwhelming
It’s more than three people can keep up with,” Don said
“At that point it’ll just naturally run its course
the Strucks circulated a newsletter on behalf of the staff of Husum Hills in 2014 to spread the word of the course being up for sale
but that hasn’t softened the blow for a community that will soon have to say goodbye to its golf course
but over 20 years you build up a lot of really nice relationships and I think for the most part the clientele has known for years that we were basically keeping it open for the community and they all saw the writing on the wall that it’s not viable,” Don said

PANAMA CITY — Georgia officials believe a body recovered from Lake Lanier on Sunday is that of a star baseball player who disappeared after a boating accident earlier this month.
While officials believe the body is Husum, a crime lab will make the final identification.
“We expect it is his body,” Adams said. “We just have to wait to hear back from the crime lab to verify our suspicions.”
Adams said the final determination would be made in the next few days.
“Our thoughts and prayer go out to the family,” he added.
Lake Lanier, about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta, has a history of fatal accidents. The Aug. 6 incident happened south of Three Sisters Island in water that is estimated to be between 40 and 80 feet deep. Large underwater vegetation, such as trees, in the area complicated the rescue efforts for more than a week.
Some Atlanta-area media outlets reported Husum was throwing a football from one moving pontoon boat to another when he jumped to recover the ball, ended up underneath the boat and was hit by a propeller. Other reports said Husum was tossing a football to another passenger of the pontoon boat when he mistakenly fell overboard. DNR officials have yet to release an official account.
It could be weeks before the investigation in concluded and an official version of events is determined.
The driver of the boat, Kenneth Toller, of Cumming, Georgia, was arrested on charges of boating under the influence (BUI) of alcohol. He was jailed in Forsyth County, Georgia. BUI was the only charge filed at the time, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Husum played football and baseball at Bay High School, and later played baseball at Gulf Coast State College before going to James Madison University in Virginia, where he had been awarded all-conference honors for his play as center-fielder/pitcher.
Below is an earlier version of this story:
CUMMING, Ga. (AP) — Officials say a body found in Lake Lanier is believed to be that of a missing Florida man who fell out of a boat earlier this month.
Multiple news outlets report authorities say the body was discovered Sunday near Three Sisters Island, which is where 23-year-old baseball standout Kevin T. Husum, of Panama City, fell from a pontoon boat on Aug. 6 and did not resurface.
The body will be sent to the GBI crime lab for positive identification.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials say they used sonar equipment to try and find Husum, and also performed surface and shore sweeps twice daily.
Authorities say the boat's operator, Kenneth Toller of Cumming, was arrested on charges of boating under the influence. It's unclear whether he has an attorney.

Metsä Board
inaugurated its upgraded folding boxboard machine in Husum
representatives of Örnsköldsvik municipality
and the forest industry attended the inauguration ceremony
Metsä Board started up a new folding boxboard machine
in Husum with a capacity of 400,000 tonnes/year
An investment of EUR 230 million was completed in 2023 to increase the annual capacity of the BM1 folding boxboard machine to respond to the growing demand for sustainably produced packaging materials that support the circular economy
With an increased annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes of folding boxboard
the BM1 is Europe's largest and most modern of its kind and is run with 98% renewable energy
“With the investment in the folding boxboard capacity at Husum, Metsä Board is well positioned to meet the growing demand for fiber-based packaging materials. We are dedicated to supporting our customers with high quality and resource-efficient solutions that help replace fossil-based materials and support the circular economy,” says Mika Joukio, CEO, Metsä Board.
From left: Mika Joukio (CEO, Metsä Board), Viveka Beckeman (CEO, Skogsindustrierna) and Jussi Linnaranta (Chair of Metsäliitto Cooperative Board of Directors) cutting the ribbon at Husum.
Between 2019 and 2023 Metsä Board Husum has undergone an extensive investment program. The first phase was completed in December 2022, including a new recovery boiler and turbine at the Husum pulp mill with an investment cost of EUR 380 million. The new modern equipment and processes enables Husum mill to significantly increase bio-based energy production and energy efficiency, contributing to Metsä Board’s target of fossil free mills by the end of 2030.
The Husum mill is one of Örnsköldsvik municipality's largest employers and plays an important role for the region and in the large-scale conversion to the bioeconomy. Husum's products play an important role in providing alternatives to fossil-based materials in consumer packaging globally, the main markets being Europe and North America.
2011 1:30 a.m.00:00 / Some recreational river runners are worried the Yakama tribe might soon erect fishing platforms and scaffolding across Husum Falls
That could prevent boaters from running a waterfall that's meant big business for private and commercial rafting companies
That means salmon should be returning soon to the base of Husum Falls
upstream from where Condit recently blocked the White Salmon River
Yakama tribal fishermen are excited about fishing the falls again
But some recreational river runners are worried the tribe might soon erect fishing platforms and scaffolding across Husum Falls
That could prevent boaters from running a waterfall that's meant big business for private and commercial rafting companies
The mood was raucous at the Wet Planet rafting company in Husum
as 300 people gathered to watch a live video feed of the destruction of Condit Dam
"The explosion in this tent was just as big as what we are seeing on screen here," said Wet Planet co-owner Jaco Klinkenberg
Check out Wednesday's coverage by Northwest News Network's Tom Banse
and video and stills from americanrivers.org
Many people are excited not just because the dam came down
but because salmon are expected to return to a White Salmon River that hasn't seen its namesake fish for nearly 100 years
But the return of salmon might also mean the end of the party for rafters once fish again reach Husum Falls
located about 10 miles upstream from the mouth of the now free-flowing White Salmon River
cheers are what you hear at Husum Falls as boaters take the 15-foot plunge over the largest commercially run waterfall in the United States
they'll probably pool up at the base of Husum Falls
And fishermen from the Yakama Nation plan to be there to greet the salmon
The Yakama have their own ideas about the significance
when I think of Husum Falls area I think (of the Yakama name)
which means "this land is a part of us," said Emily Washines
the restoration coordinator for Yakama fisheries
Yakama leaders said they hope to fish at Husum as they did before Condit Dam kept salmon from moving upstream
Their fishing rights are guaranteed by a treaty signed in 1855
the Yakama used wooden platforms and large scaffolding that extended out over fishing areas near waterfalls
But any obstructions at Husum could be potentially dangerous to the thousands of rafters who like to run the falls
Washines said the tribe hasn't made any definitive plans yet
"There's a multitude of viewpoints to what Husum Falls might look like and that
it varies anywhere from 'we should fish from the rocks' to 'we should use scaffolding,'" she said
"So where we're at right now is we're presenting that in a plan
Klinkenberg said she understands the tribal importance of Husum Falls
but hopes the tribe also understand the current economic importance of the falls to rafting business today
"Husum Falls is the highlight of the trip for people that come rafting on the White Salmon River," she said
"We run thousands of people -- it might be close to 8,000 to 10,000 people a year
and Klinkenberg estimates close to 25,000 people rafting the White Salmon River each year
Washines said the tribe understands the current economic importance of Husum to rafters
but that doesn't mean the two groups meet on this issue as equals
we would be a sovereign nation that is coming together with a recreational group," Washines said
Klinkenberg said she knows that rafters are the newcomers on the water
She hopes that simple communication will result in an agreement that can keep all sides happy
the time that the Condit was built until now is just a blink in time for the tribes.' It's their river
but I kind of respect that," Klinkenberg said
"We'll make it work; we have to make it work."
Washines said the tribe is working on a fisheries plan right now
and could present a plan to the community within a few months

project partners and representatives of Örnsköldsvik municipality
The new recovery boiler and turbine of the Husum pulp mill started up at the end of 2022
Thanks to the latest technology and processes the mill’s bio-based energy production will increase and the mill integrate’s electricity self-sufficiency will amount to over 80 per cent
The total value of the investment was approximately EUR 380 million
to be decided and implemented later in the decade
the two current fibre lines would be replaced with one new line
“The renewal will strengthen the Husum mill integrate’s role as an efficient and sustainable platform for the long-term development of paperboard production and is an important step towards our target of entirely fossil free mills,” says Mika Joukio
The renewal included replacing two old recovery boilers with one and three turbines with one
"As the new recovery boiler is of a completely new generation
we have trained our staff extensively," says Olov Winblad von Walter
The project also includes a new control room and office
which will gather the operation and maintenance staff on the same floor
"This will enable us to establish new integrated ways of working between technicians
maintenance and operators," Winblad von Walter continues
An investment programme is also underway at the Husum mill to increase the annual production capacity of folding boxboard by around 200,000 tonnes
The investment is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023

PANAMA CITY — Restaurant owner George Husum
will be remembered for both his good food and his “huge heart,” friends and co-workers said Tuesday
“He was just the best,” said Bay High School Principal Billy May
Foley’s Restaurant and was a partial owner of Red Elephant Pizza
His customers admired him for his gracious tableside manners when he checked in
calling him “the epitome of a fine gentleman,” said Floyd Skinner
Husum’s employees — many of whom followed him when he left Outback Steakhouse to open the Red Elephant — looked up to him as a mentor and leader
“One of the first things he taught me is that everything will fall into place with kindness
I think he installed that into every one of his employees.”
Infinger said Husum “took a chance on him,” hiring him as a chef when he was just 24
especially students at Bay High School who needed employment
Joey Kiessig was 15 when Husum hired him as a busboy
“Our electricity and water had been shut off
and we didn’t have money for rent,” Kiessig said
“I came from a situation with a lot of bad people and a lot of abuse.”
“He stuck his neck out for me,” Kiessig said
“He probably could have gotten in trouble for hiring a 15-year-old
George was willing to make an exception for me
gave him a sense of self-worth and guaranteed him a job while he was in school
Kiessig became the first person in his family to graduate high school and then the first person to graduate college
He now works as an analyst at an investing firm in Chicago
“I owe a tremendous debt to George Husum,” said Kiessig
and nieces and nephews would have been far worse
I probably would have ended up selling drugs
and I likely would have been in and out of jail my entire life.”
Kiessig said he’s sure there are others like him that Husum helped
“He gave many young Bay High students a job
but he mostly taught them the value of doing a good job and respecting the value of work,” said Assistant Principal Kris Palfrey
Husum was active in Bay High School’s athletics programs
but “he supported every player on the football and baseball field,” May said
helped hire coaches and could be relied upon when the school needed something
“I don’t know what we are going to do without him,” May said
“We will carry on in his honor,” said Candy Shaw

Ruth Elsasser had been missing since May 24
Ruth Elsasser was the subject of a 2013 profile in Hood River News
WHITE SALMON — A search and rescue team last week recovered a body
which is believed to be a Husum woman missing since May 24
had been missing since the morning of Monday
after it was believed she had gone on a hike
or a walk on one of the trails around her house
County prosecuting attorney and coroner David Quesnel confirmed to Columbia Gorge News that the county recovered a body last week
and that there are "reasons to believe it is the missing person out of the west side of the county," citing identifiers consistent with information provided to investigators
such as articles of clothing and a ring that belonged to Elsasser
the family had been informed of the discovery
shared the news of her loss on Facebook: “I am shattered
I am finding the most comfort by immersing myself deeply with those who were closest to Ruth,” Elsasser Morel L’Horset said
The nursing program Elsasser worked with as an instructor
also shared the news of Elsasser’s passing
We give our utmost condolences to her loved ones,” Frontier Nursing University said in a statement
for being an irreplaceable part of the FNU community; you’ll always be in our hearts.”
said she is "missing my beautiful friend and grieving today."
She had been close to the events following Elsasser's disappearance
Search and rescue (SAR) teams led by the sheriff’s office had been out searching for Elsasser at least three times since her May 24 disappearance
They later returned that afternoon and Wednesday
After several hours and nothing to show for it
telling people close to Elsasser that “at this point there is really nothing they can do,” she recalled
Still that did not stop the community from continuing their efforts — on Sunday
she joined friends and neighbors in a line search with around 20 people through her property and adjoining areas
Unofficial reports of a discovery were initially shared on Facebook last week
but Randall-Thornton said she removed the early posts “so that Ruth’s boys hopefully wouldn’t find the information online.”
“Certain community members were going by their own interests and posted information that was preliminary and at the time
untrue — and that family hadn’t even heard," she said
adding that she felt "deeply wounded and that the family was disgraced" by the postings
A Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office press release
detailed search efforts by sheriff's deputies and SAR volunteers
the press release said Deputy Mitch Kegley responded to investigate the call
Volunteers with the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue were called in and assisted with searching the area
Several Search and Rescue dog teams were used to assist in searching for the missing person
The area around the residence was steep and difficult to navigate
Attempts were made to “ping” or locate the missing person based on her cell phone’s location
and Deputy Erik Beasley responded back to the residence
Deputy Erik Beasley deployed a Sheriff’s Office drone to search the harder to reach areas
Additional searchers and dog teams returned to the scene to continue searching for the missing person
Additional attempts were made to “ping” or locate the missing person based on her cell phone’s location
searchers returned to the area to continue the search for the missing person
Detective Jason Ritoch and Detective Robert Bianchi were assigned to investigate the case and spent the next several days speaking to family and friends
a neighbor of the missing person located a body at the bottom of a steep cliff
a short distance from the missing person’s residence
but was unable to reach the body due to the steep terrain
Detective Jason Ritoch arranged with the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue volunteers
for a rope rescue team to respond the next morning to assist with recovering the body
Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Posse volunteers were called in to maintain security of the scene
until Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue volunteers could return the next morning
volunteers with the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue
returned to the scene and used a high angle rope rescue team to recover the body
Once the person had been identified as the missing person
Detective Jason Ritoch is continuing to investigate the case
Sheriff Songer would like to thank the many volunteers including volunteers with the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue
Department of Emergency Management Director and Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Coordinator Jeff King
and the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Posse
for their countless hours spent trying to locate the missing person in this case
Randall-Thornton had known Elsasser for approximately the last nine years
She was Elsasser’s medical assistant at NorthShore Medical Group after Elsasser
moved to the area with her now ex-husband Stephan Coffman
all over the Gorge and beyond,” she said of Elsasser
The story describes how she became a marathon runner
Elsasser was diagnosed with Gaucher’s disease at age 4
painful condition that forced numerous hospitalizations throughout her life.” With the help of cutting-edge gene therapy and the addition of a world-class expert on Gaucher's
the disease faced "formidable opponents" in her care team
“My father was a college football coach,” Elsasser had told Hood River News
“The discipline and mental toughness paid off; her growing endurance and speed would often leave the team in the dust,” Hood River News wrote
“finding solace and strength in her five weekly runs and daily exercise and nutrition regime.”
she was later diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease
a diagnosis that put her “in total despair,” Elsasser told Hood River News
a fellow long-distance runner who was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s — leading her
about 20 minutes before the first bomb went off
She had supporters all along the way — “Friends and family joined her in Boston and groups of friends formed prayer circles at home
Coffman had 37 text messages awaiting her in her hotel room
She felt ‘completely surrounded’ by love.”
Some parting thoughts Elsasser left in the article: “The route of the marathon
were lined with thousands of people cheering each other along; great runners
There wasn’t one step of the way that I didn’t feel connected to everyone there
The other story was the connections — the little kids
people everywhere — all there to share in the incredible experience."

PANAMA CITY — Mentors and friends lamented the loss of Kevin Husum on Monday while wondering how much tragedy his family could withstand
a former standout athlete at Bay High School and Gulf Coast State College went missing on Saturday after a boating accident on Lake Lanier outside of Atlanta
Authorities continued to search for Husum’s body on Monday afternoon
A recent graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg
Husum was about to embark on a career as a professional baseball scout according to a friend
He either fell or jumped from a pontoon boat on Saturday afternoon and did not resurface
was a Bay County businessman who died suddenly of natural causes in December 2015
Hugh Higgins was best friends with Kevin Husum for 10 years
He never rubbed anybody the wrong way,” Higgins said
Higgins reserved further comment until meeting with the Husum family
Miles Godwin said he was a closer friend with Husum’s older brother
but was the starting center on the Bay football team when Kevin Husum was the fullback
Kevin moved to starting quarterback as a senior
“Just an easy-going nonjudgmental personality,” Godwin said
“He always hung around with us older guys.”

Kalamazoo County District Court Judge Carol Husum will retire in February and her seat will not be filled because of a new state law
who has served as judge for nearly 20 years
said Chief District Judge Paul Bridenstine
The latest Husum could have held the judgeship was 2017
when she would be ineligible to run for re-election because she will be over 70 years old at that time
When contacted by the MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette on Friday morning
The county will now have six district judges, due to a law passed earlier this year that eliminates 13 judgeships across the state.
"We will do our best to accommodate the needs of the community," Bridenstine said
each judge will share in the increased caseload
Clarke III — and the latest one of those positions will be eliminated is in 11 years when Hentchel would be ineligible to run due to age
Husum was appointed district judge in 1994 by then-Gov
she was a Kalamazoo assistant city attorney

PANAMA CITY — A promising Bay County baseball player has yet to be found following what authorities believe was a fatal boating accident in Georgia
Authorities continued their search Monday for 23-year-old Kevin Theodore Husum
EDT after he fell from a pontoon boat near the Three Sisters Island area of Lake Lanier outside of Atlanta and did not resurface
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is leading the investigation
but their efforts have yet to result in the recovery of Husum
“Witnesses saw him go down and not come back up,” McKinnon said
“It happened in an area where there is no land nearby — much further than someone could swim
Search crews were using side-scan sonar devices
The incident happened south of Three Sisters Island in water that is estimated to be between 40 and 80 feet deep
in the area has complicated rescue efforts
An official order of events has yet to be released
DNR’s critical incident reconstruction team has only confirmed the boat on which Husum was aboard was in motion at the time he went overboard
Some Atlanta-area media outlets reported Husum was throwing a football from one moving pontoon boat to another when he jumped to recover the ball
ended up underneath the boat and was hit by a propeller
Other reports said Husum was tossing a football to another passenger of the pontoon boat when he mistakenly fell overboard
McKinnon said he has heard a version of those stories
but an official account has not been determined
went under and never emerged,” McKinnon said
has been arrested on charges of boating under the influence (BUI) of alcohol
McKinnon said BUI is the only charge at the moment
is arguably the busiest lake east of the Mississippi River because of its location
authorities see numerous alcohol-related boating incidents on weekends and holidays around the summer
“We try our best to inform the public about the dangers of boating and alcohol
people still do it despite those warnings.”
a former player at Bay High School and Gulf Coast State College
was a center fielder/pitcher for James Madison University in Virginia and had been awarded all-conference honors for his play
His family has been hit by tragedy in recent months
McKinnon said recovery crews are continually investigating findings on the sonar
“We’re hoping to find him soon to give the family some closure,” McKinnon said

2019 1 p.m.As 4-year-old Vivian Rose Weaver battles a rare terminal brain cancer
her family cherishes their time together while searching for a brighter future for children with DIPG.The sound of toes prancing and the sight of tutus fluttering filled the studio on a frigid February afternoon at Columbia Gorge Dance Academy in Hood River
Dancers in little pink ballet shoes lined up one after another as teacher Nancy Clement began her Tuesday class for 4-year-olds
The blonde haired and blue-eyed girl put up a fit when her parents tried to get her dressed before class
Vivian has difficulty walking and it had worsened within the last couple of months
Clement modifies the class to accommodate Vivian’s needs
including grabbing her hand as the class speeds up
Vivian is one of the 200-400 children between the ages of 4-11 with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma
DIPG is a tumor located on a portion of the brainstem called the pons
Its location makes it impossible to remove with surgery
Most children with DIPG are given 9-12 months to live on average
The causes of DIPG remain unknown and treatment options are limited
Vivian continues to fight after more than a year with DIPG
Doctors and researchers are hopeful additional research and clinical trials will turn up more options for children like her
learned of their daughter’s diagnosis after she presented symptoms in January of last year
Vivian was riding her child-sized electric four-wheeler outside their Husum
Vivian complained of a headache that seemed to pass within minutes
Vivian had been experiencing headaches for some time
one of Vivian’s eyes began to deviate inward
A pediatric ophthalmologist examined her eyes and diagnosed strabismus
the most common eye deviation in children that most outgrow
The headaches coupled with the eye deviation and a facial nerve palsy prompted the Weavers to schedule a rushed MRI for Vivian
appeared uniformly bright and larger than usual on her MRI
“We wake up every morning and it's like this nightmare that never ends,” Katie said
Knowing that we will try and try and try to help save Vivian
but the likelihood of that happening is more than narrow.”
Katie and Simon were told to “go home and make as good of memories” as they could
Less than 10% of children with DIPG survive two years following diagnosis
Radiation therapy is the only known treatment to have any effect on the disease
Temporary shrinkage of the tumor often relieves pressure on functions of the brainstem
which have little to no data to support their effectiveness
One reason for this is insufficient funding for pediatric cancer research generally and for DIPG research specifically
Just 4% of federal funding for cancer research goes toward pediatric cancers
none of the more than 250 clinical trials for DIPG have shown improvements in chances of survival
while a nurse prepares to draw blood on Jan
have researched a myriad of options to save their daughter’s life
They’ve even tried some alternative therapies in hopes of contributing to the greater understanding of DIPG and its possible treatments
Princess costumes hang high on the wall outside Katie and Simon’s bedroom
an experimental headgear device that Vivian wears
Vivian is the first patient with DIPG — and the first pediatric patient in the world — to use the Voyager
The headband-like device emits ultra-low frequency waves
The electric impulses mimic chemotherapeutic actions without the invasive nature of side effects
but the device’s effectiveness for managing DIPG is yet unproven
“We continue to employ a number of different approaches
all of which are experimental,” said Simon
“with the hope that it does something and with the hope that the knowledge we gain from trying those things might help other kids.”
Vivian’s routine had become a slew of appointments and waiting rooms in the year since her diagnosis
Vivian unsteadily roamed the halls of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland entirely decked out in pink
Simon had noticed a change in Vivian’s speech patterns as her words began to slur together
“And on that day it became very clear that the tumor was growing again,” said Dr
Vivian’s pediatric neuro-oncologist at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital
The news that Vivian’s tumor had grown since December wasn’t a huge surprise to Katie
who knew that Vivian’s worsened balance likely signified progression
“It's certainly a really heavy weight to carry and to bring to a family and to put on their shoulders,” Nazemi continued
Vivian Rose Weaver continues to sit still after technicians made her radiation mask at OHSU on Feb
The next move for Vivian was to undergo a second course of radiation to control her symptoms
This is a new development in DIPG treatment from the past couple of years
Doctors are now willing to go beyond the previous maximum amount of radiation in dire situations such as DIPG progression
“Getting that much radiation in one place in your body is not good,” Simon said
“It will cause cancers if you lived long enough and the daunting acknowledgment is that none of these kids are going to live long enough to see the cancers develop from that amount of radiation.”
A big trampoline sits beneath a towering ring of trees outside of the Weaver home
What once embodied endless entertainment gradually became a sight of fear for Vivian
Her left leg isn't strong enough to support herself anymore
robbing Vivian from her favorite outdoor activities
her interests may reflect only what she is physically capable of doing
Despite impairments brought on by tumor progression
Vivian has made significant physical improvements with the help of Annette Broddie
Broddie is an occupational therapist and owner of KidSense Pediatric Therapy Center in Hood River and aims to help children overcome obstacles to daily functionality
“I have treated children with cancer before
Broddie works with Vivian on motor skills to improve her gait
“Her roles right now are to play and learn.”
Whether it’s stringing beads on a pipe cleaner to strengthen ocular motor skills or stepping on stones through a low-level obstacle course to get to Unicorn Island
Broddie believes having game-like activities will engage and motivate kids in their challenge
Vivian’s diagnosis uprooted the Weavers’ daily regimen
They travel across the map for doctor’s appointments in Portland
Simon has taken Vivian to Young Life’s Father Daughter Dance in Hood River
Katie helped Vivian put on her pink dress and pulled her hair back into a tight ballerina bun topped with a tiara
Some strands of hair hadn’t yet grown back and hung loose on the back of her neck
Katie and Simon cherish the time they spend with Vivian and her younger sister
“I’m perfectly content just spending my days looking after my kids and making sure they feel loved,” Katie said
as she draws at her art table in their home on March 20
Vivian’s diagnosis has shifted priorities for the Weaver family
“When your immediate family and your loved ones are suddenly threatened
you circle the wagons and everything that might have been an interest or a passing fancy or a passion prior to that ceases to hold importance,” Simon said
Katie and Simon started a chapter of the Defeat DIPG Foundation in their daughter's honor in an effort to raise money and awareness for this rare disease
Researchers continue to investigate and better understand the nature of DIPG
Kellie Nazemi at OHSU said research into how doctors deliver medicine shows promise
perhaps increasing the chances of discovering effective treatment for DIPG
“I'm daring to dream that the long-term outcome for DIPG is that we will find a way to control this disease,” Nazemi said
Simon continues to talk about the future with his daughter
telling her that she will be the best mom and best wife there has ever been
Katie Weaver adds a change to a piece of art work hung in the laundry room of their home in Husum
Balloons and string lights decorated the dance floor at the Elks Lodge in Hood River for the Father Daughter Dance
Vivian and her father sat near the dessert table eating cookies
Vivian and her friend walked to the dance floor and their fathers followed
Simon scooped up Vivian and swung her around to the beat of the pumping pop music playing on the stereo
Though tired from dancing after a couple of songs
Vivian pushed past the physical limitations brought on by progression and merely enjoyed spending time with her father

The Tigard resident was in a raft heading toward the edge of Husum Falls, a 10-foot vertical drop on the White Salmon River known for flipping boats like dirty socks in a washing machine
Bailey was on a commercial rafting trip — and the group had been doing drills on how to run the Class V falls throughout the journey — but the prospect of being tossed into a swirling vortex of water still made her apprehensive
"I knew about all the worst-case scenarios, about being flipped under the raft and twirled around," said Bailey, whose group was guided by Zoller's Outdoors Odysseyslast week
"But our guide did a great job of preparing us."

The middle sectionis the most popular trip
The outfitters only offer the waterfall when conditions are safe — and even then
running the falls is optional for guests — but that possibility of danger brings a certain allure to trips that typically cost around $50 to $60

The rapids begin immediately from the put-in
jet-black walls and green forest mixing together in a mosaic of color and movement
The White Salmon was created from a collapsed lava tube
leaving behind a river that seems to drop through a dark tunnel
The run continues downstream to Husum Falls
lining your boat through or running the waterfall all are options
The middle section isn't the only option on the White Salmon. The removal of Condit Dam opened up a brand new stretch of river through the old damsite, through extremely narrow passageways with Class IV rapids
Zollar's Outdoors Odysseys has added a trip that includes this lower stretch of the river
and expects to begin taking people down soon once a log is removed from the river (see story on A1 for more)
Make sure to contact an outfitter before attempting this run since hazards may exist
In the upper White Salmon, the whitewater is even larger. The Green Truss section — from Green Truss Bridge to BZ Corners — is a classic five miles of narrow canyons and Class V waterfalls only intended for experts
However, Wet Planet Rafting does offer a guided Class IV-V trip during spring months when conditions are favorable
Called "The Farmlands," the upstream trip brings clients through tight mossy canyons and difficult rapids with names such as Drop Zone
The White Salmon River is a place home to scenery and whitewater
and whether you're an experienced boater or a first-timer on a commercial trip
black canyons and forest are not to be missed

Denmark and Prussia couldn’t agree on where to draw their border
Both countries were hungry to control the southern Jutland Peninsula
today part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish county of South Jutland
and both sides refused to concede any ground
In 1848, the countries went to war, with Denmark winning claim to the land. More than a decade later, the land was up for grabs again as the Second Schleswig War erupted
Prussian authorities moved in and over the next few decades instituted a slew of new laws suppressing anything remotely Danish
the Danish farmers caught on the wrong side of the border dispute were none too pleased—and they were especially upset by the new rule forbidding them from raising their home country’s flag
Danish farmers tried to create a new breed of pig that faintly resembled their beloved home's flag
The banner of Denmark is relatively simple—a flat red background covered by a long
white Nordic cross—so all the pig needed was a coat of red fur and one or two prominent white belts
there are fewer than approximately 60 flag-striped breeding animals still alive today
these cake-covered tables are a tradition on the peninsula

In 1848, the countries went to war, with Denmark winning claim to the land. More than a decade later, the land was up for grabs again as the Second Schleswig War erupted
operating profit and net income continued to be higher than the year-ago quarter
One reason for this decline was a disruption in pulp production at the Husum mill in November
which also led to lower cartonboard and kraftliner output
there was a significant weakness in the Chinese pulp market
with the result that prices there in the fourth quarter were significantly lower than in the same quarter of the previous year

PCS Power Converter Solutions GmbH in Berlin is further expanding its portfolio for generating electricity using wind turbines
The new Green Line Grid Stability product line supplements the existing product range to ensure the low voltage ride through capability (LVRT) of wind turbines
PCS will present examples from the Green Line Family of full power converters as well as a grid stability solution from September 18 – 22
at the HUSUM WindEnergy trade fair in Hall 3 at Booth 3A11
innovative and interesting approaches to wind energy are not only a result of the upcoming HUSUM WindEnergy trade fair – the necessity for innovation in the field of wind energy is growing of its own accord as wind energy becomes increasingly established in the worldwide energy mix and the number of installed systems rises
The industry must remain innovative in all areas in order to continue this pattern of growth – from the political framework and legal regulations
all the way to technical solutions and the resulting product design
these are the requirements that are placed on the wind turbines of the future
This also demands new levels of performance from the development departments in the supply industry
In order to be able to ensure power supply using wind energy while meeting the requirements for optimum grid compatibility and a high level of energy output
wind turbines need reliable and efficient frequency converters
The PCS Green Line family of power converters offers a wide range of applications and systems to meet this need
Full power converters for total yield and optimal grid integration
Full power converters for synchronous generators are currently the fastest-growing technology on the wind market
Synchronous drives offer an extremely high energy output and can better fulfil the grid requirements in connection with the full power converter
PCS will be demonstrating all aspects of their full power converter solution: from its monitoring and control functions to its modularity and flexibility all the way to its partial load capability
The PCS Green Line full power converters rely on liquid-cooled IGBT-based 4-quadrant converters
Each power module offers an output of up to 500 kW (620 kVA)
The inductor-type parallel circuits make the converters scalable in 500 kW increments
PCS is also currently developing an innovative integrated overall solution for converting wind energy to electricity
The PCS Green Line System complete solution is a sophisticated integrated power generation system comprised of power converters
transformers as well as control units for the entire system
The basis for the successful establishment of PCS Green Line Systems on the market is PCS’ intensive cooperation with partners who can offer many years of experience in the industry and are deeply committed to the continued development of wind energy
New dimensions of grid stability for new systems and for retrofitting
wind turbines may no longer disconnect from the grid in the case of a grid breakdown
This means that primarily old systems and specific generator concepts are technically overwhelmed
PCS will be presenting their current product solution for grid stability at HUSUM WindEnergy
The established Green Line 1000 reactive current converter has been supplemented to create a complete solution for low voltage ride through (LVRT) – the Green Line 3000
This solution does not disconnect from the grid during a grid breakdown (LVRT)
thus fulfilling all of the international grid code requirements for wind turbines
the Green Line 3000 reduces the strain on mechanical components and ensures a stable energy output
As both a solution for retrofitting or for installation in new systems
the product can easily be integrated into any system
The Green Line 3000 LVRT solution is available for various performance classes
Since it is only used for brief periods of time
Together with the Green Line 1000 reactive current converter
PCS offers a complete solution that allows systems to reliably stay operational during drops in voltage and continuously produce energy
This technology has been tested under the most difficult climate conditions – including in the largest test center for wind turbines in China
This makes PCS an even greater expert in the area of wind turbine grid integration
