great hiking trails – and for being Bruce Willis’s birthplace
We’ve had a look at what there is to do in and around town and have come up with a list of ten things that will help you plan your stay
Idar-Oberstein All that glitters is not gold
Especially once you step into Idar-Oberstein’s main attraction: a museum entirely dedicated to gemstones
All three floors of the villa are packed with crystals
diamonds and virtually every type of gemstone you can find on this planet
surmounting to a whopping 10,000 individual items on display
The vaulted cellar rooms are reserved for special exhibitions revolving around the precious crystal clusters
Idar-Oberstein Oberstein Castle is a fortress perched on a stark cliffside north of the Oberstein village
The fort served as a permanent residence for the Count Daun-Oberstein until the early 17th century and was later used as the administrative seat
Wars and fires destroyed the fort over the course of history
and its reconstruction continues to this day
You can explore the inside at your own pace for a fee of €2; guided tours need to be arranged up front
Idar-Oberstein’s most famous landmark is the so-called Felsenkirche (which translates into English as ‘church of the rock(s)’)
The chapel does not sit on or near a rock but is rather built into the rock beneath Oberstein Castle
No roads lead up to the church – to get there
you will need to walk through a tunnel and climb up a set of 230 steps up to the ledge
One of the most popular vantage points in the region is located approximately 20 kilometres outside of Idar-Oberstein
The Nahe-Skywalk was only installed three years ago and has since become a not-to-miss attraction for those visiting the area
The steel-and-glass observation deck juts out from the hilltop and over the Nahe River
which flows 70 metres below and offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley
You’ve probably seen the Crag Church from afar if not close-up
but if you turn slightly to the right and look you’ll spot another one of Idar-Oberstein’s sights – the remains of the Bosselstein Fort
the fortress started to decay after it was abandoned in 1600
other than the crumbling ruins of the castle keep and the surrounding wall
A climb up to the former fort is still worth it for the views of the Nahe valley
The round keep is all that remains of this old fortress built in 1200
Hunsrück hikes Idar-Oberstein is the perfect base if you want to explore the many hiking paths in the area. The most renowned trail is the 410-kilometre-long Saar-Hunsrück Climb, which begins just north of the town centre and leads all the way to through the Saarland state and to the Luxembourg border or to the city of Trier further north
If you’d rather just spend a couple of hours exploring the region
take on one of the circular routes or short-distance hikes instead

Jakob Bengel Industrial Museum In 1873, Jakob Bengel founded his company that initially produced pocket watch chains, but as time went on, the locksmith found himself inspired by Bauhaus and Art Deco designers and started producing jewellery and accessories
The museum takes visitors on a tour through the virtually unchanged manufacturing plant and explains the technology
processes and antique machinery involved in the production around 130 years ago
A short drive gets you to the highest peak of Rhineland-Palatinate. Erbeskopf Mountain climbs to a height of 816 metres (2,677 ft) and is worth a trip all year round. In the summer months, you can zoom down the mountain on the toboggan run, and with snowfall the mountain range transforms into a winter wonderland and popular skiing piste

Idar-Oberstein sparkles on even the gloomiest of German days
its precious stones bringing the area renown dating back to the discovery of the first mineral deposits more than 400 years ago
Some of that history is on display at the German Museum of Minerals
along with colorful rocks and gems from the region and across the globe
With four floors to explore inside a cozy old building
the museum was a great place to spend a few hours on a gray autumn day
a church built into the rocky ledge of a cliff that towers above the Oberstein part of the town
The Nahe River historically divided the villages of Idar and Oberstein
which were first joined administratively in the 1930s
One account from a well-known jeweler holds that the region’s first deposits of amethyst
agate and jasper were discovered during excavations for the church in the 14th century
Mills along the river powered cutting and polishing machines
When the hills started to dry up in the 1800s
miners and craftspeople emigrated to South America in search of fortune elsewhere
They found similar materials in Brazil and began shipping them to Idar-Oberstein
which kept gem cutting and jewelry production thriving
The museum’s jewelry collection includes dazzling necklaces
delicate hairpins and brooches and one of the smallest cameos in the world
One room holds some of the largest crystals ever imported into Europe from Brazil
Another highlight was a dark room with luminescent gemstones
The lights turned off a few seconds after I entered
and the stones glowed like radioactive material under a UV light
Though most signs at the museum are in German
it was easy to figure out the samples’ country of origin and the type of mineral
sometimes with a little help from an online translation tool
pieces of natural glass formed by the impact of meteorites
One display highlighted Hildegard von Bingen
the 12th-century German Benedictine nun who believed gemstones had healing powers
A laminated chart sold for 2 euros lists 34 stones and their purported properties
green jade is said to be good for digestion
while amber reputedly helps with allergies
Each stone elicited its healing powers in different ways
She believed those with eye problems should moisten hyacinth with saliva and place it over the eyes
Hildegard also recommended hyacinth for demonic possession
Another gemstone museum on the Idar side of the town has more than 10,000 exhibits and shows stones
engravings and sculptures from 6,000 years of cutting and engraving
with the last tour of the day starting at 4 p.m.; gem digging sessions are at 10 a.m.
Food: Idar-Oberstein is known for spiessbraten
Das Spiessbratenhaus is in a half-timbered building a short walk from the mineral museum
Cost: Museum admission is 8 euros for adults
4.50 euros for students 15 and older and people with a disability
A single adult ticket for the mine is 8 euros
Free for kids under 6 if visiting as part of a family

Intergem, a jewelry trade show that’s been held annually in Idar-Oberstein
The 40th edition of Intergem was supposed to take place from April 11 to 13 at Messe Idar-Oberstein
“It has not been possible to motivate the relevant companies from the region to participate in Intergem again
new concepts for a relaunch of the fair are being discussed.”
Messe Idar-Oberstein’s managing director Mirko Arend called the cancellation “extremely regrettable.”
The fair is “a highlight for the region that should not be given up,” he said in the statement
chimed in: “We must work together to ensure that Idar-Oberstein soon becomes a shining trade fair meeting point for the industry again.”
Organizers hope two events that were planned to run in conjunction with Intergem
the “Long Night of Gemstones” and GemTec

The artist-in-residence programme (AIR) of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Idar-Oberstein offers artists the opportunity to work in the inspiring surroundings of Villa Bengel and the workshops of Trier University of Applied Sciences - Campus Idar-Oberstein
Seth Papac from the USA was a guest artist
Seth was able to familiarise themself with the tools and working methods used in stone carving in order to integrate the material stone conceptually and physically into their own creative process
Seth explored the levels of meaning of symbols in the past and present
The photos presented here show Seth in the workshops at the university and at Jakob Bengel as well as a selection of intermediate stages of the pieces worked on here
Seth says about their time in Idar-Oberstein:
I arrived at the Gemstone and Jewelery Department with the plan to complete a few new pieces for my most recent body of work
Carving acorns and a broken heart alowed me to gain comfort with the tools and equipment
and become familiar with stone as a varied and colaborative material
Working in a subtractive method to reveal form
with a hard and somewhat unforgiving material
requires intense mental and physical focus
The intimacy and solitary nature of this process
align nicely with my next research focus —the construction of gender identity
I am taking many things back to my studio: carved forms
The Jakob Bengel factory is an incredibly beautiful and intense place — saturated with history
and an almost tangible sense of the laborers who worked in the space for decades
I entered the place with my most current body of work
The work considers the meaningful agency of jewelry and how this meaning has been forgotten in the commercialization of powerful symbols into consumable jewelry
I spent hours looking through the thousands of stamp forms in hopes of finding some of these symbols
How could I use these remnants of the past as inspiration for something new
I may have found the answer in experiments I undertook using a new material
created from sheets of recycled plastic by my friend and artist Maria Phi lips
connected with the use of these stamps and forms
something new emerged from a historical tool and a new
I look forward to continuing this exploration of embossing meaning into material

Concerns raised over radicalisation of anti-lockdown movement as man held over fatal shooting
Politicians in Germany have expressed concern over the radicalisation of those who disagree with Covid restrictions
after a 49-year-old German citizen was arrested on suspicion of shooting dead a petrol station worker who refused to serve him while he was not wearing a mask
Authorities in the western town of Trier said the suspect told officers he acted “out of anger” after the 20-year-old cashier at a petrol station in the town of Idar-Oberstein
“He further stated during interrogation that he rejected the measures against coronavirus,” police said
the man said he had felt “pushed into a corner” and had held the victim “responsible for the situation as a whole because he had enforced the rules”
The suspect had entered the Aral petrol station at around 7.45pm on Saturday and picked up a six-pack of beer
CCTV footage shows a mask tucked into the back of the man’s trousers
After the cashier had twice alerted him that it was mandatory to wear a mask inside the petrol station
the man had put down the beers after a brief exchange of words and left
this time wearing a mask that he pulled under his chin as he stood at the counter
“Eventually he pulled a revolver from his pocket and fired a fatal shot at the 20-year-old student from Idar-Oberstein,” police said
The suspect fled on foot but turned himself in at a police station in town the following morning
“I am shocked by the terrible murder of a young man
who had only asked others to follow the prevalent rules
to be considerate and show solidarity,” Annalena Baerbock
“I am greatly concerned about the radicalisation of the Querdenker [Germany’s movement of pandemic sceptics]”
“We all need to stand up to growing hatred.”
Police said the suspect had not been in legal possession of the weapon used in the attack
and he had not previously been on the authorities’ radar
There was no suggestion that the victim and the gunman had known each other before the incident
expressed his shock and dismay over the crime
terrible act that has happened here in Idar-Oberstein,” he said
It will take time to come to terms with it.”

The city is filled with both actual gems and figurative ones such as castles
there are five monuments you should keep an eye out for including fountains
Make it a family game to see who spots all five first
Whether it is too cold to venture outside or unseasonably warm
there is something for everyone to spend a day in Idar-Oberstein
Idar-Oberstein is a pleasant if rather sleepy town nestled in a wooded western corner of the Rhineland-Palatinate within the Hunsrück range of low-lying mountains
A first-time visitor could hardly pass through without noticing its most famous landmark—the Felsenkirche—a church built directly into the crag of a cliff towering high above the part of town known as Oberstein
But it’s what lies beneath that gives Idar-Oberstein its unique niche amongst German tourist destinations
in the geological period known as the Permian
lava flowed from the inner earth and rose to the surface
bubbles that were filled with the gases were destined to become amethyst
The history of the mining of such stones locally dates back to the 14th century
and the first mill to grind and polish them was established here around 1520
prompting miners and those who worked the stones to seek their fortunes elsewhere
New life was breathed into the local industry at the start of the 19th century
when agate rock formations mined in Brazil were shipped back to Idar-Oberstein to be worked into costume jewelry and other decorative items
Idar-Oberstein remains a leading manufacturer of gemstone products
and its designers work for some of the world’s most renowned jewelers
Today’s tour of Idar-Oberstein concentrates solely on the sights connected to its mining heritage—of course
there’s much more to see in this gem of a town
The German Mineral Museum displays precious stones mined locally and worldwide
Of note is its collection of locally crafted art-deco style jewelry
a cabinet with fluorescent lighting which sets off the minerals to spectacular effect
healing stones such as those used by local mystic St
and 400-million-year-old fossils of sea life recovered in Hunsrück slate
The museum’s latest exhibit is a collection of some 50 sculptures made of rare minerals and metals
At Europe’s only gemstone mine open to the public
visitors must don hardhats before walking through an illuminated tunnel filled with rock crystals
They also hold a gemstone camp with minerals stocked from elsewhere
at which treasure hunters can search for semi-precious gems of their own
Register for the prospecting experience in advance
This grinding mill is representative of the 183 facilities that once stood alongside the Nahe River and other local waterways
It remained in operation until 1945; nowadays
expert guides demonstrate processing methods of bygone days on massive sandstone grinding wheels
the name of the town is full of promise: Idar-Oberstein
It has been famous as a centre for precious stones and jewellery for centuries
the town's streets are lined with jewellery makers and retailers
It stretches out along the valley of the Idar and Nahe rivers
under the tree-covered slopes at the southern edge of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park
Beautiful finds are made into jewellery in Idar-Oberstein
and some of the precious stones adorning kings and rulers have passed through the hands of the experts here
The valuable stones have ever symbolised richness and power
which is why kings and kaisers used them to decorate their crowns and insignia
These precious gems started out in the hot lava flows deep underground
When they force their way to the surface in a volcanic area such as the Nahe region
minerals are formed in the hollow chambers as they cool
and they started a tradition in Idar-Oberstein which now spans more than 500 years
They were found here as long ago as the 14th century, initially above ground, but later on gem hunters had to dig down in tunnels to find them. You can see how deep they had to go in the Steinkaulenberg Gemstone Mine
Visitors here can immerse themselves in the labyrinth produced in the hunt for precious stones
as the mineral mine at Steinkaulenberg is the only one in Germany open to visitors
A crown with gemstones in the German Gemstone Museum in Idar-Oberstein
and how impressive the results could be despite the primitive polishing equipment
cutters and engravers helped preserve the tradition and maintain Idar-Oberstein’s position as a leading centre for precious stones until today
even though the sources in the mountains around were exhausted and sealed at the end of the 19th century
many people moved away from Idar-Oberstein
with some of them making it to South America
where they discovered massive agate deposits
They sent the stones home because they knew the people there were experts who could cut them to perfection
A man making jewels in the historic "Weiherschleife" in Idar-Oberstein
The place became home not only to precious stone dealers and craftsmen, but also to many jewellery makers. Many of the valuable pieces sold by luxury brands in cities all over the world were made in this little town on the Nahe. Visitors to the German Gemstone Museum can also get a glimpse of what these companies do
There are samples of the work done by local gemstone polishers
There are sparkling gems and glistening jewels everywhere
including the imperial crown and beautiful cameos
which are reliefs engraved onto discs of agate or other precious stones
The experts in Idar-Oberstein even created beautiful figures for Peter Carl Fabergé
the famous court jeweller for the tsars in St Petersburg

Design Lab #11 is taking place in cooperation with the Idar-Oberstein Campus of Trier University of Applied Sciences
As one of the most important centres for gemstones in Europe
Idar-Oberstein represents a central hub in a worldwide network of hardstone trading and working
Students from across the world come together here to work creatively and artistically with the material
they have been invited to explore the complex ambivalence of gemstones extending beyond their use in jewellery design
Precious and semi-precious stone collections
and jewels made of gems fascinate people and rouse desires
sometimes leading to greed and criminal acts
Their mining destroys landscapes and has led to bloody conflicts
the trade and processing of these stones have united people from the world’s most remote regions for thousands of years and led to interaction and innovation
A social community’s identity can be anchored in very special individual stones
with them being considered sacred or integrated into objects that play an important role in identity-constituting rituals
While gemstones used to be accessible to only a select few
they have now become easily obtainable to consumers on the mass market
the sensory perception of the stones’ characteristics – their patterning
and hardness – allows a symbolic approach to the material and to a world of ideas and imagination that often evokes a deep emotional bond
Decorative arts museums are intrinsically also material archives
because their collections have been structured and presented according to the materials and origins of their holdings since their foundation in the 19th century
with some museums still following this model
the collection presentations have rarely offered us much information about the political dimension
The focus is instead on artisan virtuosity and artistic design
noble and – from a Western perspective – exotic and unknown materials served to represent social status and political influence
were also regarded as magical objects and used in religious worship
as evidenced above all by examples of medieval church art
During the Renaissance and Baroque periods
when the art of hardstone cutting reached its zenith
the artist was considered to be a master of nature and shaped the stones contrary to their physical properties
Artistically worked stones from different epochs and with very different forms and functions can be found in the Kunstgewerbemuseum’s (Museum of Decorative Arts) collection as objects or as jewellery
Idar-Oberstein is the name of a unique town in Germany that has semi-precious and precious stones as a material inscribed in its DNA
One of the world’s most important hardstone centres
it constitutes a central hub in the global network of hardstone trading and processing
the stone has shaped the region and its people for centuries
specialists in cutting and engraving precious stones have established themselves in Idar-Oberstein and transformed the place into a vast workshop for specialised artisan cultural techniques – a knowledge that is unfortunately increasingly lost
The Idar-Oberstiein campus of Trier University of Applied Sciences has set itself a goal that is nothing short of reactivating the cultural techniques and knowledge interwoven with the history and traditions of Idar-Oberstein
while drawing on a contemporary appreciation of art and expertise to guide the town into the globalised present.
A publication (Reading sample online as PDF, 5,5, MB) by Arnoldsche Verlag accompanies the exhibition

A rash of recent suspicious drone activity has been observed near German military sites
which are currently training Ukrainian soldiers in the use of NATO weapons and equipment
several drones repeatedly flew over the Bundeswehr property and the adjacent Wildflecken military training area,” a spokesman for German Joint Support and Enabling Service Headquarters (DEU JSES HQ) told The Debrief
A German Ministry of Defense spokesman further clarified that the recent suspicious drone activity near the Wildflecken military site occurred on consecutive nights on September 30 and October 1
there have been other commercial drone incursions at other German NATO bases in recent months
located in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate
is said to have been one of the other sites to experience suspicious drone activity in recent weeks
Idar-Oberstein is Part of the Baumholder Military Community
and NATO military facilities and home to the largest concentration of American combat soldiers outside the United States
Suspicious drone activity has also been recorded over U.S
located roughly 20 miles from the border of Czechia
Aside from being German or NATO military facilities
each of these locations with recent suspicious drone activity are sites involved in training Ukrainian soldiers on NATO weapon systems being provided by allies to help defend against Russia’s ongoing invasion
Since at least as recently as July, the Panzerhaubitze 2000 has been extensively used in Ukraine. Several systems already require repair after being used to fire over 100 shells a day in artillery duels with Russia
The Pentagon has likewise confirmed that since at least May
Ukrainian troops have been training on Western armor and artillery systems with the 7th U.S
The Department of Defense describes the Grafenwoehr Training Area as “the U.S
Army’s largest and most sophisticated permanent training area in Europe.” The base includes multiple live-fire and maneuver ranges capable of supporting small arms
the German Ministry of Defense confirmed that Ukrainian soldiers are currently training in Germany
“We can confirm that Ukrainian soldiers are being trained in Germany
and as maintenance soldiers for the all-protection transport vehicle Dingo (ATF-Dingo),” said a spokesman for German Joint Support and Enabling Service Headquarters
The “All-Protection Transport Vehicle” or “ATF Dingo” is a German-made heavily armored infantry personnel carrier designed to withstand land mines
and nuclear-biological-chemical (NBC) threats
The Dingo can be armed with the 7.62×51 mm MG3 machine gun
Modified variants of the ATF Dingo can also be used as ground surveillance radar
Classified as a “mine-resistant ambush protected” (MRAP) vehicle, Germany’s defense department says
“Probably no other Bundeswehr vehicle has saved as many lives as the Dingo.”
In mid-September, Germany announced they would provide 50 ATF Dingo to Ukrainian forces
representatives with Bundeswehr declined to confirm that the training of Ukrainian troops on the ATF Dingo was being performed at the Wildflecken military training area
the site of recent suspicious drone activity
“Please understand that we are not allowed to provide any further information due to the ongoing police investigation and regarding the details and locations of the training
as well as relocations and other individual measures for reasons of operational security,” a spokesman for German Joint Support and Enabling Service Headquarters told The Debrief
Located nearly 100 miles northeast of Frankfurt and encompassing more than 18,00 acres
Wildflecken was initially established in the mid-1930s as a training facility for the Wehrmacht’s IX Corps
the site served as a training hub for several Waffen SS foreign-legion divisions
including the 5th SS Panzer “Viking” Division and 33rd SS Infantry “Charlemagne” Division
Wildflecken became part of the 7th Army Training Command
the base was returned to the German government
Wildflecken is home to the German Army Tactical Combat Simulation Center and hosts training for the German military and NATO allies
Dubbed “The Top of the Rock” by American troops, Wildflecken has been described as one of the most feared and disliked NATO training sites in Europe due to its high altitude and extreme weather
Wildflecken is also one of the few military sites the German government allows to use CS gas in training
the harsh atmosphere of Wildflecken would make it an ideal location for training Ukrainian troops destined for the rigors of war
German officials declined to speculate on who is likely responsible for the rash of suspicious drone activity over German military sites
“At no time was the population endangered
[However] please understand that we are not allowed to provide any further information due to the ongoing police investigation and for reasons of operational security,” said a spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense
a NATO counterintelligence officer familiar with the incidents stated that Russian intelligence services were most likely responsible for the recent drone events
“Russia is actively in a war with Ukraine
and you’ve got small commercial drones flying over multiple sites used by allies to train Ukrainian forces
I wouldn’t exactly call this a major case of ‘who done it,” said the counterintelligence officer under a condition of anonymity
As Europe’s largest democratic economy
Germany has long been on the frontlines of Moscow’s shadow war against the West and a target for Russian espionage
In late August, it was revealed that two senior officials with Germany’s Ministry of Economic Affairs were by Germany’s domestic intelligence service (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz or BfV) of being Kremlin spies
Earlier this year, an employee at the Materials Research Institute in Augsburg received a suspended sentence and fine after spending nearly 8 months in jail for passing along aerospace secrets to a Russian intelligence agent
the individual is only identified as Ilunur N.
who received a relatively light punishment because prosecutors characterized him as being a “useful idiot” for the Kremlin
With Germany now serving as a significant center for NATO assistance and training of Ukrainian troops
it only becomes an even more important target for the Kremlin’s intelligence services and Russian spies
a coalition of 40 countries that the Defense Department created after the Russian invasion to address Ukraine’s needs and requests
Ramstein also serves as headquarters for U.S
and as part of the Kaiserslautern Military Community
Further south, in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart and Patch Barracks has become the logistics nerve center for coordinating international military aid to Ukraine
According to a recent report by the New York Times
the Pentagon is in the process of standing up a new European command dedicated to providing security assistance to Ukraine
the new command could include upwards of 300 personnel and be housed at U.S
located on the Rhine River roughly 25 miles west of Frankfurt
In addition to suspicious drone activity, an August report by Germany’s military counterintelligence service (MAD) noted that several suspicious vehicles had been observed near military bases in Idar-Oberstein and Grafenwoehr
MAD warned that Russian intelligence services were likely using cell-site simulators
also referred to as a “dirt box,” to clandestinely gain access to Ukrainian soldiers’ mobile photo data
Director of Germany’s military counterintelligence service
issued a stark warning of Russian espionage activities at Bundeswehr sites
“Particularly due to the training of Ukrainian armed forces here in Germany
but also due to the arms deliveries to Ukraine
interest in Germany as a hub and as a logistical hub has
“When a drone flies over an ammunition depot or over a training facility
in which Ukrainian forces would be trained
possibilities of espionage and sabotage must be carefully examined.”
A police investigation into the recent rash of suspicious drone activity near Wildflecken is currently underway
“The police were informed immediately and started the investigation
These investigations are ongoing,” a spokesman for the German Defense Ministry told The Debrief
Local law enforcement officials confirmed that officers had responded to the recent reports of suspicious drone activity near Wildflecken and an investigation into the incidents is underway
“Whether the sighted objects were actually drones cannot be confirmed with conclusive certainty at the moment,” said a police spokesperson in Würzburg
Air Force’s 86th Airlift Wing declined to answer specifics about any recent reports of drone incursions at Ramstein Air Force Base and headquarters of NATO Allied Air Command
“Ramstein Air Base takes small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) very seriously and has systems to counter drone incursions within Ramstein AB’s airspace,” an Air Force public affairs official told The Debrief
we do not discuss security measures publicly.”
Officials said that if someone spots a drone operating near Ramstein Air Base
they should immediately contact the 86th Security Forces Squadron Base Defense Operations Center at +49 06731-47-2050

The Museum’s new special exhibit features carvings of animals
The German carvings have been in the collection for decades
all the Museum’s dioramas feature animals carved in Idar-Oberstein
The exhibit reflects the style of Fabergé design that goes back to the late nineteenth century and gem cutting traditions that continue today
In the early 1960s the Museum’s founder visited Idar-Oberstein

The artistry involved in processing the precious stones remains fascinating to this day
This applies not only to polished stones on rings
There are also stones of a different kind – those that ensure that the grapes grown along the Nahe ripen into fine wines
A quirk of nature gifted the Nahe region with different soil structures ranging from slate to sandstone and basalt within just a small area

A neighbor of the man who shot a gas station cashier for demanding that he wear a face mask described him as "fairly normal," someone you could talk to

Such descriptions are making it possible to gradually draw a more accurate picture of the man responsible for a murder that shocked Germany just days before Sunday's general election
The slaying is believed to be the first in the country by a coronavirus pandemic denier

Criminal psychologists warn that the motives behind such an insane act are complex
But there is growing evidence that Mario N
right-wing ideologues and conspiracy theory peddlers in the Querdenker scene
This is also apparent in the digital trail the shooter left behind on social networks
German Health Minister Jens Spahn of the center-right Christian Democratic Union party spoke of a "cold-blooded murder" and called on citizens to strictly reject any form of "pandemic extremism." Olaf Scholz
the front runner in the campaign for chancellor with the center-left Social Democratic Party
said that the "Querdenker" were partly to blame for having "fomented a climate in which this act became possible in this man’s head."
what experts have been warning about for months appears to have materialized: The danger emanating from the corona-denier scene has clearly increased

The number of participants taking part in Querdenker protests has decreased recently

the Interior Ministry in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is observing a "delegitimization of the state
open calls for violence and the justification of an overthrow of the state." Authorities in Germany also aren’t ruling out the possibility of domestic terrorism on the part of the Querdenker
Signs of the growing potential for violence were on displays as early as last autumn
when arsonists threw incendiary devices at a building of the Robert Koch Institute

Germany’s security authorities are also receiving tips from intelligence agencies in other countries
were tipped off by the FBI in the United States that radical corona deniers in Germany and Poland were exchanging ideas on Facebook about building explosive devices – possibly for attacks on vaccination centers
Links to gun shops can also be found in some of the chats on the scene
One Querdenker follower even wrote that people who are not in possession of a gun license should resort to other means
"Buying a crossbow is legal," the person writes

At the summer party of the Design Campus in Trier
the students from Idar-Oberstein wore jewellery as a 'living exhibition'
On display were graduation pieces from the permanent loan collection from the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery as well as current works by the students
The faculty of Campus Idar-Oberstein also informed the visitors about the Gemstones and Jewellery study programmes and provided them with a barbecue from the famous Idar-Oberstein Schwenkgrill
The Department of Gemstones and Jewellery welcomed numerous visitors to the open day at its new location in Idar-Oberstein
More than 200 visitors came to the Open Day at the new location of the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery in Idar-Oberstein in bright sunshine
After the building in Vollmersbachstraße burned down in July 2022
the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery has found a new temporary home after a difficult few months
The team and the students invited the citizens of Idar-Oberstein
as well as alumni and colleagues from the other university locations in Trier and at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld to visit the new premises in the former Zerfass leather goods factory
seminar rooms and offices were open to visitors from 11:00 to 16:00
The students presented their current work and pictures of final theses
of the fire and of the renovation measures at Zerfass were shown
The professors and staff gave insights into their respective fields and workshops
The students had prepared a large sales table with numerous items of jewellery and many visitors left the university freshly decorated
The university thanked the Idar-Oberstein volunteer fire brigade for their quick help in rescuing the main part of the machines and tools from the old building with a barbecue dinner in the evening
They made it possible that the renovation measures necessary for the move-in could be carried out in record time
since the start of the semester in April this year
normal study activities at the Gemstone and Jewellery Campus can now take place again to the greatest possible extent
Special thanks also go to the various regional companies that supported the university and the students during the difficult months without a functioning infrastructure
on the one hand by donating money and goods and on the other hand by offering students the use of workshops and machines for their final theses
Representatives of the city of Idar-Oberstein and the university presidium were also present.

met with the politicians significantly involved in the preservation and reconstruction of the university location
Member of the State Parliament Hans Jürgen Noss (SPD) and Mayor Friedrich Marx (SPD)
It was agreed to soon hold further joint talks on the further development of the university location in order to strengthen the presence of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Idar-Oberstein in the medium term
"Idar-Oberstein adorned" is a series of exhibitions on contemporary jewellery organised by the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery in cooperation with the Jakob Bengel Foundation and the city of Idar-Oberstein
The exhibition rooms are located on the ground floor of the beautiful Art Nouveau villa of the Jakob Bengel Foundation at Wilhelmstraße 44 in Idar-Oberstein
21 April to 21 June 2023 Exhibition opening: 20 April 2023
Detlef Thomas is showing works from 1980 to 2023
the ephemera related to his jewellery will also be on display in this exhibition
The ephemera intervene at one point or another in the "legibility" of the jewellery and are an interesting subtext to his works
An important group of works in this exhibition are the enamels
a selection of which is being shown here for the first time and which are relevant to the artist because he has used them over the years to develop his own technical approach within a technique that is thousands of years old
His works are characterised by a close look at form
material and function and not infrequently transgress the set boundaries in order to be able to view the works quasi from the outside and thus more comprehensively
which here and there enables a completely new view of things
Detlef Thomas only appears sporadically in public and thus his works are very rarely shown so extensively in an exhibition

26 JANUARY - 16 APRIL 2023 IN THE BENGEL FOUNDATION
has now been a synonym for the presentation of works by students of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Idar-Oberstein over the past 20 years
It is a connecting link for highly diverse works
because we particularly value supporting individuality and personal handwriting in as wide a range of styles as possible
So it is not surprising that the primary goal of the Gemstone and Jewellery Department is to guide students on their way to becoming free-acting but critical individuals and
independent artists with a unique identity
This exhibition shows the work of students from the last 15 years and thus also provides an insight into the development of the department
the Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degree programme is not only about free artistic work
but also - and often above all - about precious stones
They do not have to be present in every work
but an attitude towards the material should be developed
Studying in a gemstone centre presupposes this engagement
This exhibition takes place as part of the exhibition programme "Idar-Oberstein adorned"
a cooperation of the Jakob Bengel Foundation
the city of Idar-Oberstein and the Trier University of Applied Sciences

Peter Piller is a contemporary German artist
In addition to his own drawings and photographs
whose pictures he assembles in thematic series
is particularly characteristic of his artistic work
German language and literature and art education before enrolling at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts in 1993 for the subject "Free Art"
In 2005 Peter Piller had a guest professorship at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts
From 2006 to 2018 he was professor of photography in the field of contemporary art at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig
Since October 2018 he has been head of the Free Art class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy
Peter Piller creates photo archives and sorts them according to design elements and content-related similarities
His archive is based on a collection of about 6000 newspaper photos
In 2002 he received 12,000 photographs from an aerial photo archive
They were produced by a company in the 1970s to be sold at the front door to the owners of the residential properties pictured
The collections are supplemented by historical postcards
He also undertakes migrations from cities such as Hamburg
Several thematic compilations were created from the archives
concise titles such as "Sleeping Houses" or "Shooting Girls"
The series were exhibited several times and subsequently published in illustrated books
Peter Piller is currently working on stone-age cave drawings
which have been documented and archived in numerous scientific publications
By reproducing and enlarging the historical pictorial documentation
on the so-called "indeterminate lines" of these drawings
which are removed from their cultural context and thus from an unambiguous readability
An open system of signs becomes visible without being able to decipher it
A visual space is created in which the ambiguous creates an echo in the viewer
Piller also combines photos of cave paintings with finds from other scientific disciplines
"in dealing with photographic finds of all kinds
i have trained myself to be as patient as possible
it is essential to distrust the first glance
it is sufficient to have a vague feeling of the kind of "there could be something there"
that's worth much more than a stack of pictures after the first sighting or even an idea for a way of dealing with it
just as every word is surrounded by thousands of associated words
and if possible always as another one." peter piller

She worked in Kinjo studio for Jewellery Design after graduation
and has experience with wood and other materials for tableware and furniture design
She has invented a research approach to TEXT as a subject and discovered a phenomenon on the street from human habits and daily life
she decided to study for her Master of Fine Arts in Gemstone and Jewellery at University of Applied Sciences Trier
The artist says about her pieces: "There is always a lot to explain about the text
and its meaning is also repeated to be elaborate by me on any occasion
I was like the experimenter in the text project
The language of these cities and the objects to which they refer
the relationship being meaningful or its purpose capable of being understood."
