I must admit I was less-than-enthused when my spouse asked me if I wanted to get away for the day to this “I’ve never heard of it before town,” Idstein
I realized my attitude was about to change
Idstein is roughly a ninety-minute drive from the KMC area and a half-hour drive or less than an hour public transit ride from Wiesbaden
This town is a definite must-do on the list for those into interesting architecture
Half-Timbered Buildings: In the heart of town
a majority of the buildings are intricately decorated and beautiful half-timbered houses that date back as far as the 15th century
There are hidden faces throughout the designs
and you can make it a family challenge to see who can find the most faces
Keep your eyes peeled for “Das Schiefes Haus (Crooked House).” The name says it all for this blue house with yellow window frames
Castles and Witches: While not as well-known as the ones held in the U.S.
Europe also held quite a few witch trials in the 16th and 17th centuries
Idstein found itself swept in witch-fury and between 1676 and 1677
35 women and eight men were executed for witchcraft
a plaque in their memory sits at the foot of the Hexenturm (Witch’s Tower)
By walking over to the Tourist Information Center
you can trade a deposit (such as your car key) for the key to the tower and make the climb in the tower yourself
you can simply walk around the grounds of Idstein Castle
If just reading about castle adventures is more your speed
make sure to pay a visit to the Hexenbuchladen (Witches’ Bookstore) a mere three-minute walk from the Hexenturm
Great Food: We arrived in Idstein right around “my tummy is rumbling for lunch”-thirty
so our first task was finding food and the Taunushof Restaurant and Hotel did not disappoint
I can personally recommend the French onion soup as well as the baked Camembert cheese with cranberries
My spouse highly recommends the Alfredo schnitzel
Or at least I think he does; he just kept repeating
“We need to make this at home” between bites
“Alte Feuerwache,” not only has a variety of brewed in-house beers but also some amazing food
and it was in the top three (of many) Käsespätzle dishes I have eaten during my time in Germany
They also featured a menu item that I have never seen in Germany before: Brizza
a pizza dish featuring a mustard and cream sauce
cheese and sausage on top of a pretzel (Brezel) crust
I also indulged in dessert which was a chocolate-lava cake dish served with vanilla ice cream and berries
You can also purchase beer and souvenirs to take home with you
Whether you go for Instagram pictures of architecture
tower climbing adventures or on a foodie expedition

PHOENIX -- The D-backs' season-opening trip to Sydney, Australia, last year provided media-relations guru Jim Myers a chance to make his proposal to longtime girlfriend Monica Idstein a memorable one.
Myers popped the question when the couple reached the top of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.
"I actually heard several people say that if you do one thing in Sydney, you need to go do the bridge climb," Myers said. "It's an incredible view of the harbor and something that everybody remembers. So I thought it was something that would be special for Monica and something she would remember forever. I had called a few weeks in advance and talked to my tour guide over the phone and worked the whole thing out over the phone. He was an amateur photographer so he said he would help me out."
You're not allowed to carry anything with you on the bridge climb, but the tour guide gave Myers a wristband with a string attached so he could tie it to the ring to prevent the possibility of it falling.
Idstein said yes, drawing applause from the D-backs players who were also on the climb.

woman in the kitchen – Hillsdale students often toss around these joking phrases
While generally considered more religious and conservative
many Hillsdale women would not affirm these stereotypes
saying the issue is far more nuanced than often presented by other students
One of the most recent trends to stem from the conservative internet bog is the “tradwife movement,” a collection of internet memes and mommy vlogs highlighting — or demeaning — a traditional housewife role
“I think it has a very negative connotation,” senior Sabrina Sherman said
“I joke around with my friends that I do my best to be a tradwife
It is really tailored and doesn’t include the bad aspects of it.”
plans on having a career after a few children
the division of labor mostly falls under the traditional understandings of female roles,” Sherman said
“When I think of the negative aspects of the tradwife culture
it doesn’t take into account people’s unique differences
Sherman found herself unexpectedly pregnant
which led her to redefine what it means to be a traditional wife who also works
I had such strict goals for what my future would be like
but now my timeline has kind of gotten a little tossed up,” Sherman said
“I am doing my best to strive toward goals and personal improvement
said she often feels a culture of campus judgment around dating and marriage
“A lot of people here assume that if you don’t graduate with a ring on your finger
then you didn’t really do Hillsdale College correctly,” Otting said
“I see a lot of women who have this idea of what a guy wants
but less of what a wife should be in a Christian sense.”
Otting said she hopes to get married and become a mother after graduation
“I think of the meme with the blonde girl and the blue sundress with the flowers on it,” Otting said
“I think that it’s the glorification of what men get out of a subservient wife and not in the biblical sense
It comes from a place of arrogance and selfishness.”
Being a stay-at-home mom should be done for the children
“I don’t care if my husband wants a home-cooked meal every time he comes home,” Otting said
“I care that my children are raised in a home where a parent is present when needed.”
“You are not going to get respect if you don’t demand some form of it,” Otting said
“I think that women on this campus don’t demand enough respect as far as what they can do
either within a career field or in the home
I think one way campus culture could change is to understand that being a subservient housewife does not mean what the internet
and even what some faculty thinks that it means.”
Otting argued the true definition of a good wife can be learned from the Virgin Mary
“I think what you have to model yourself after is that deep care and respect for God
That floods out into how you interact with your husband
“I always joke about the Industrial Revolution and its consequences,” Sherman said
“We have all these different labor-saving devices
so now for the first time women have the opportunity to get their traditional roles done quickly and then have other things to work on.”
She said the sexual revolution came about as a response to these opportunities
“Now we can have more nuances,” Sherman said
“I think the reason why the tradwife trend is becoming so popular is because society is cyclical
Maybe there was a reason why this was the way that things were pretty much always done.”
While senior Emma De Nooy Miller got married this past summer
she said she doesn’t see herself as a tradwife
She explained the difference between being viewed as a tradwife versus identifying as one
“I think a lot of people think I’m a tradwife merely because I got married when I was 20,” De Nooy Miller said
she’s not really a tradwife because she’s very feminist in some of the ways she thinks
she took both her and her husband’s last names.’”
had never even heard of tradwives until they got to campus
“I had absolutely not heard of the term until coming to Hillsdale,” Idstein said
“I think of a woman in the ’50s in an apron cooking dinner
the husband and wife are not on equal levels
I feel like it’s more of a derogatory term.”
Idstein is studying history with the goal of being a museum curator on the East Coast or abroad
She is in a long-term relationship of four-and-a-half years with her boyfriend and does not plan on getting married until a few years after college
“I’m definitely not a tradwife,” Idstein said
“I’m not planning on having kids until about 30
I kind of throw around the term ‘irreligious’ sometimes.”
While Idstein said gender roles exist for a reason
she said they can sometimes become stifling and cited the “Barbie” movie as a cultural example
“I was really excited for the ‘Barbie’ movie because it was an example of women embracing their femininity
but I walked out of that theater just feeling so awful about women — how it feels to be one,” Idstein said
I think that by victimizing us so much in the media
Idstein emphasized the importance of men and women recognizing their shared experiences in order to combat gender inequality
“I think we’re on a path to getting better,” Idstein said
“I do like seeing women embracing their femininity again
I see a lot of that just on social media and in movies
I think that we’re still kind of in that phase where we’re bringing men down when we shouldn’t be.”
De Nooy Miller said she has a self-proclaimed hatred for gender roles
“I really hate gender roles,” De Nooy Miller said
that there’s that aspect of me that has to finally admit
which tends to be more of a male attribute.”
De Nooy Miller said she was more worried about adhering to gender roles
“I stupidly thought that I had to never ask a guy to dance
my husband thought it was really attractive that I am a girl that knows what she wants
A large portion of roles comes down to preference and God-given talent within a marriage
She said her own goal is to have an active career as a dance instructor after raising young children
‘What are the gifts God has endowed me with?’ I think God gives us gifts in order for us to glorify him best,” she said
“I don’t think that he gives men and women gifts based solely on gender.”
Senior Shannon Golden got married last summer and plans to work in healthcare after graduation
She says she partly identifies with the term tradwife
She hadn’t heard much about the term except through conservative-leaning news outlets
“I believe Jack’s the head of our household
but he’s also supposed to love and give himself up for me,” Golden said
“I wouldn’t say we follow it when it comes to division of labor
because right now we’re both full-time students so it’s not physically possible for me to do all of the housework.”
Golden said the most important takeaway for marriage is not about gender roles but rather sacrifice
“Love is a choice that you have to make every single day as you choose to sacrifice yourself to the other person,” Golden said
“I think if you think of love as something you solely feel
then your marriage or your relationship is going to be lacking because you’re waiting for an emotional response that is never going to be there 100% of the time.”

The Wall Street Journal did not include Hillsdale College in its new Best Colleges rankings
following a years-long practice of ignoring the school because it does not accept federal funding
“It doesn’t matter one bit because nobody is going to choose or not choose Hillsdale College based on what the Wall Street Journal rankings say,” said Buddy Moorehouse
adjunct instructor of documentary filmmaking
“The school’s reputation transcends that.”
The newspaper collects the bulk of its data from Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and other federal reporting systems as a methodology for scoring institutions
Hillsdale’s director of institutional research
One of the requirements to be part of the ranking is to be Title IV eligible
such as an accredited university that accepts federal financial aid
“Depending on the WSJ’s definition of ‘eligible’ in ‘Title IV eligible,’ it is very likely that Hillsdale is not considered as satisfying this criteria,” Trojniak said
Moorehouse helped his spring 2023 documentary filmmaking class produce a feature-length documentary telling the story of how Hillsdale College became free from federal aid in the 1980s
another requirement for schools to be included in the newspaper’s ranking is that the government data for the factors used to compile its ranking is collected and publicly reported
Trojniak said because the college does not accept government funds
there are significant measures for which there is no data for the school
“There are several measures related to graduate income and social mobility that are derived from data on Pell Grant recipients,” he said
“Since there are no Pell Grant recipients at Hillsdale
Trojniak said even though the newspaper provides a basic overview of its methodology for scoring institutions
it is difficult to ascertain precisely why a particular score is given
or why one school is included but another is not,” he said
Junior Abby Idstein said she thinks it would help Hillsdale to be part of the rankings
but the school is still very successful without it
“What makes a college great is its ability to teach the future generation of America,” she said

interfaith marriages and new migration driving trend
As Minnesota Jews celebrate their new year at sundown Friday
a new study shows the number of folks likely to participate in Rosh Hashana traditions has increased significantly
The Twin Cities Jewish community has grown by 23% since 2004
according to a study released by Brandeis University this month
The growth is fueled by Jews moving here from other states
growing numbers of interfaith marriages and general population growth of the area
There are now 34,500 households with at least one Jewish adult
Those households are likely to include adults of other faiths: Nearly 60% of married Jews under age 50 have a spouse or partner who is not Jewish
"This is a very high growth rate," said Janet Krasner Aronson
associate director of the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis
"And the majority of the community is engaged in Jewish life."
The results of the 2019 Twin Cities Jewish Population Study, the first such study in 15 years, were an eye opener even for some community leaders.
"A lot of us were surprised at that kind of growth,'' said Ted Flaum, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater St. Paul, which sponsored the study along with the Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Harry Kay Charitable Foundation.
"Eleven percent [of the Jewish population] have moved here in the past five years,'' he said. "We don't know who all the new Jews are. That will be a challenge to us, to reach out in new ways."
The report, which provided a detailed look at Jewish households, has drawn widespread interest from organizations serving the Jewish community. While Jews account for only 1% of Minnesota's population, they have long been active in civic and community affairs.
The report is based on a random sample survey of more than 3,300 respondents in the seven-county metro area.
It found just 31% of Jewish households have one member who belongs to a synagogue — part of a national downward trend that started decades ago, said Aronson. However, two-thirds of respondents say they attended at least one service in the past year.
That the Jewish population is up but synagogue membership is flat or declining concerns religious leaders such as Rabbi Adam Stock Spilker of Mount Zion Temple in St. Paul.
"It means we need to do a better job communicating the relevance of Judaism's message of wholeness, justice and compassion," said Stock Spilker. "This is an opportunity and a challenge."
Researchers found that participation in Jewish life is more likely to be personal or community-based. About half of the adults said they participated in a Jewish-sponsored event, 63% said they donated to a Jewish organization and 70% said they connected to an event online.
Nearly half of the Twin Cities' nearly 20,000 Jewish children are being raised by parents of differing faiths, the report found. However 80% of Jewish children "are being raised Jewish in some way,'' it said. That could include participating in Jewish traditions at home or attending Jewish summer camps.
How to better connect these children to the Jewish community, as well as their parents, was a question raised during a webinar unveiling the study this week. Should there be a greater focus on Jewish preschools, schools and education?
Rabbi Joshua Borenstein, executive director of the Torah Academy in St. Louis Park, is a firm believer in this route. Not only do Jewish schools provide a stable foundation in Jewish values and practices, but they also provide a community of mentors, teachers and friends to support both the student and parent.
"Judaism is a way of life," said Borenstein. "When the values are instilled at those ages, they become part of your essence."
The survey described an overall financially secure community, with some weaknesses. Sixty-two percent of households reported living comfortably, and another 27% said they could cover living expenses with a little left over. But nearly one in 10 households reported being able to meet only basic needs.
And that survey was taken last fall and winter before COVID-19, said Flaum, noting that the financial situation of those lower-income households may have deteriorated further. Jewish social-service groups have been seeing a growing demand for food shelf and other supports to families in need, he said.
With or without wealth, thousands of Jews will be lighting candles and saying traditional blessings over dinner at their homes this weekend. It is the beginning of the high holidays for Jews, 10 days culminating in Yom Kippur on Sept. 28. It's a time of introspection and atonement.
Jewish leaders hope that in the months following, the report can guide programs and services for the Twin Cities community.
"This cannot sit on shelves,'' said Flaum. "This is a gift we're giving to the community. I think this will help us shape the footprint for the next 10 years for the Jewish community.''
