The Miami University RedHawks women’s basketball team began the 2024-25 season strong
Through the first four games of the season
The Mid-American Conference (MAC) preseason poll had the RedHawks projected to finish eighth in the conference
Miami sits at third behind the Ball State University Cardinals and the University of Buffalo Bulls
This start is especially important when considering where the team stood at the end of the 2023-24 season
Last year’s 9-20 overall record and last place finish in the MAC prompted head coach Glenn Box and his coaching staff to add new talent to a strong group of returning players
An important addition to the RedHawks’ roster is first-year forward Ilse de Vries
who began her collegiate career with her first game against the Appalachian State University Mountaineers
De Vries finished third on the team in scoring with 10 points and six rebounds
De Vries holds a unique journey that has led her to this point in her life
she started playing basketball when she was 10 years old
“I just started in a neighborhood where my parents lived,” De Vries said
De Vries played for the National Team Under 15 before getting scouted to play for the Orange Lines Academy in Amsterdam
She said the opportunity to play for the capital city of the Netherlands was a huge stepping stone for her
While she said she was grateful for her opportunities
she wanted more and knew what the United States had to offer her
She said her inspiration to come to the U.S
began after Box watched her at the European Championship
De Vries was the first player he spoke to shortly after getting the job with the RedHawks
De Vries said she knew she had to take the opportunity
“I really wanted to come to the United States because basketball is so much bigger than in my country,” De Vries said
“When I got the opportunity to go I knew I should do it because it was such a big opportunity for me.”
including four free throws on six attempts
Her 13 rebounds is tied for second-most on the team
Box feels De Vries has improved by leaps and bounds compared to when she first arrived in Oxford
“She’s a freshman [who was] kind of thrown into the fire,” Box said
she works extremely hard and she’s adapted to our culture here.”
said she is grateful for not only the talent De Vries brings to the team but also her great energy for her teammates
“She’s a great teammate to have because while she does a lot for the team basketball-wise
she’s also someone that will always make us laugh and cheer us up in the locker room,” Tretter said
Acclimating to a new team and school is tough enough
Five RedHawks arrived in Oxford from outside the U.S
Rather than adapting specific measures for international players
the Redhawks’ coaches and players said they feel it is important for it to be a complete team effort
“I think one thing that we try to do is just invite them to everything,” Tretter said
“We do everything together as a team and try to give them more experiences that they might not have at home.”
understanding the coaches at practice and getting used to Oxford was difficult at first
she said she appreciates the team’s efforts to help her
“My teammates are helping me really well,” De Vries said
especially since there’s sometimes a language barrier
Sometimes I struggle with understanding what the coach means
so my teammates are always helping me understand better.”
Miami’s offseason has paid off with a 3-1 start
De Vries continues to get involved with 69 total minutes
The RedHawks have six more games until conference play begins
They are hoping to overshadow last year’s performance
and De Vries may prove to be a factor in Miami’s success this winter
“Anytime you include somebody in your program that has her character traits
[and] she has the potential to be a dynamic rim protector

They received the award for their outstanding academic performance and research internships
Brechtje: ‘It’s recognition from the programme and the pharmaceutical field for my efforts and achievements during my studies.’ Ilse was surprised when Kirsten Schimmel
Director of the Pharmacy Master’s Programme
During her master’s in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences
completing two internships and a literature review
For her first internship at the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research
she investigated why some medicines cause liver damage despite being approved
She found that these drugs disrupted mitochondrial function in liver cells
she worked with the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience
examining changes in lipids in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease
She discovered that some of these changes also occur in people who have the disease in their bodies but do not show symptoms
Her research offers insights into the disease and potential future treatments
Ilse’s research shows that patients with obesity remain stable on lanreotide
a medication used to treat neuroendocrine tumours
This means their disease stays under control for longer without worsening
but there was a need for real-world data on its effectiveness
Ilse gathered information from electronic patient records and discovered this notable trend
Both Brechtje and Ilse won 1,000 euros as part of the KNMP Studentenprijs
Ilse isn’t sure yet how she will spend the money but plans to set aside some for scuba diving
‘I’ve just started a PhD at the UMCG in Groningen and moved there
I’ll use the prize money to help me settle in quickly in Groningen!’

and the RedHawks went 11-13 from there to take their victory 84-53
Miami held a lead through every minute of play
head coach Glenn Box expressed how important the opening quarter was for the RedHawks’ success
“I thought our kids did a tremendous job getting [us] off to a good start,” Box said
The first year contributed three points against Appalachian State but didn’t play against Xavier
“Emily has got a lot of firepower,” Box said
“I regret not playing her at Xavier … She’s a talent

She’s been in the music business for 20 years. And to celebrate that milestone Eurovision 2014 star Ilse De Lange recently appeared on Dutch TV Show ‘Pauw’
Broadcast shortly after her former duet partner Waylon came 18th at Eurovision 2018
the show’s hosts pressed her for her opinion of the song and performance
In trying to avoid the question she made her thoughts very clear…
“But I’m not going to say what I think of it
I get that question a lot: what do you think of the act
then I will read my words everywhere tomorrow and I’m not up for that
but I’ll keep that to my friends and family
Ilse De Lange and Waylon are still the most successful Eurovision participants for the Netherlands in recent times
the duo decided to go their separate ways and have been developing their careers apart from each other ever since
In March Ilse released the song ‘OK’
Russia’s national broadcaster Karusel just released the songs that will compete at the Russian final for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018
https://soundcloud.com/esc2013/sets/junior-eurovision-2018-russian-national-selection-final
but I remember William saying he has great American accent
Waylon is nothing but an insufferable prima donna alongside Salvador
Other types of music are allowed to exist and people are allowed to like them
ok..and he has the right to say what is his opinion…
but he is the one shutting down the diversity that Eurovision is meant to foster by saying Netta ‘should win if Eurovision is a circus.’ Saying that the public and juries are wrong after they have both had their say is a bit childish tbh
And by the way I still think that the songe sucks
he has a right to be an a**hole and others have the right to call him an a**hole
I never understood those freedom of speech/he has a right comments
You’ve made several logical leaps in your argument so I’ll pretty much leave it here
not just ‘sugary bubble gum’ entires; not quite sure where you managed to draw these conclusions from tbh
if the juries know so much about music and Wail-on’s track was so good
Artists know the very real risk of bombing at Eurovision
if they are so protective of their music then maybe they should think twice before entering
Althouh I still would like her to really say what she thinks as I’m sure it would be interesting
I’m hoping for good new music from her and to also try for a second time at Eurovision
Nashville is a little to late for anyone to shine
but it’s good they cancelled it the way it has progressed
The live performance video was pretty good
The ‘official’ video was far cliched
The live performance was just cringe-inducing
far more than the ‘official’ video even
She is just saying that she hates Waylon’s performance in a smart way
That’s a great attitude to have towards her public opinion
as it would most likely start some controversy and hate on either side and the world is better without more hate
You seam to think that juries from the eastern part of Europe are not important
You know the meaning of the word “literally”

Fresh off her 1000m SA record, Caster Semenya will be chasing the women’s 1500m South African record at the Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl on Thursday at the third and final Athletix Grand Prix Series Meeting
Semenya broke the 35-year-old record of Ilse de Kock Wicksell on March 8 at the second Grand Prix Meeting at Tuks
She will face USA-based Dominique Scott in the 1500m at the third and meeting in Paarl
Semenya has already come close to the SA record of 4:01.81
set as far back as 1984 by Zola Budd-Pieterse when she clocked 4:01.99 in Durban on in June 2016 at the Africa Championships
The World Championship bronze medalist over 1500m has already raced the metric mile once in 2018
Not much should be read into this performance though
especially after her blistering 2:35.43 SA 1000m record
Scott has raced the 1500m twice this season on the indoor circuit where she first ran a national record of 4:05.25 (Boston
She will need to go through the 300m mark in around 46 to 48 seconds
the 400m in roughly 62 to 64 with 2:08 targeted for 800m if she hopes to break the record
“At SA’s it is all about the title,” says Semenya who recently graduated in Sports Management
“So the race is more likely to be tactical
I am really looking forward to chasing Zola’s record
I have the 800m and the 1000m record so it will be good to get the 1500m record too.”
while Scott seems to get better as the race progresses
Semenya will be seeking an 800m/1500m double at the National Championships
