—C. F. Müller, Musikalische Original-Anekdoten und Miszellen, Erfurt, 1836, p. 303.
Both Pergolesi and Duni are referred to in the libretti of their operas as ‘maestro di cappella napoletano’ (‘Neapolitan chapel master’), although neither of them was born in Naples. They both did, however, receive their musical training in that city, under the guidance of the renowned composer and teacher Francesco Durante, among others.
Do I say ‘a man’?” The lie is banal.
Do I say ‘a woman’? No, that needs no argument.
Is it any wonder that Balatri clenches his fist, thinking about what has been done to him, and exclaims, “Mondo Porco! Mondo Perverso! Mondo Canaglia!” (“Swine world, perverse world, scum world!”)?
According to Pergolesi’s first biographer, the composer is said to have retired to a monastery in Pozzuoli, just north of Naples, in early 1736, less than a year after the failure of L’Olimpiade. There he died of tuberculosis on March 16, 1736, aged 26 years, two months, and 12 days.
After a performance of La serva padrona in Paris in 1752, an extremely heated debate ensued between proponents of Italian music and supporters of French opera. The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in particular, vehemently criticised the ‘overloaded’ music of Rameau and other French composers, citing the music of ‘ce grand musicien’ Pergolesi as the prime example of expression and good taste.
German composer Ferdinand Hiller, who expressed his reservations about Pergolesi’s Stabat mater to Rossini in 1855, received an answer as characteristic as it was wise from the old Italian maestro. After telling Hiller that he was initially reluctant to publish his own Stabat mater because Pergolesi’s setting enjoyed such great renown everywhere, Rossini added:
I had it [Pergolesi’s Stabat mater] performed in Naples [in 1820], and it made a deep impression. But it requires two beautiful voices, they must recite it well and even lend a hand here and there to some somewhat outdated passages by noble expression. The original simple instrumentation must also be respected. Recently, people performed it with large choirs and in a modern orchestration. I don’t know where that was, but it is a completely misguided undertaking.
But however critical some connoisseurs sometimes were of Pergolesi’s Stabat mater, no one could ignore the work, as it moved music lovers to tears across all Europe. Spanish composer Juan Francés de Iribarren Echevarría (1699-1767) felt compelled to make all sorts of minor rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic adjustments to Pergolesi’s score. Iribarren additionally used the music of movements from Pergolesi’s Stabat mater several times as the basis for short religious motets.
Knowledge workers in the 21st century typically resign themselves to this fact and accept that they’ll lose hours each week to watching their colleagues explain business plans with trapezoids
speak from personal experience as parents themselves.)
Already time-strapped and stretched to their limits
working parents minding kids at home simply cannot afford to put up with meandering check-ins
“If you haven’t optimized your meetings,” Frei says
employers and managers need to do whatever they can to support and accommodate working moms—or risk losing them entirely
Making a few changes to the way meetings are run is a good place to start
Video calls have quickly become the norm at companies eager to find a substitute for regular face-to-face interactions
But Zoom chats put an extra layer of pressure on working parents to present a “professional” appearance
A Wall Street Journal article this summer
argued “pets and children are no longer the cute intrusions they were in the early days of the pandemic”—a decidedly un-family-friendly sentiment
but one that women may nonetheless worry about
Typical Zoom etiquette also advises that workers ensure that their backdrops look tidy and their outfits pulled-together
a tall order when there are small children running amok at all hours
there is no Zoom filter “good enough to pick up all the stuff in the background.”
you have to put on pants that don’t have elastic,” Morriss adds
Instead, they advise that companies make phone calls the default for all one-on-one meetings. Many employers have a long history of putting too much value on face time
“The big problem for working parents is their day just never
“It is just relentless.” One of the most common problems they face are morning meetings scheduled before school or childcare start times
which put working parents in the position of having to do two jobs at once
All managers have to do is ask their teams about what times are tricky for them
“Any time you can make it discussable that people have whole lives and those lives include children and that children sometimes get sick
and their day is not a typical adult human’s working day
it makes a huge psychic difference,” Morriss says
Most Zoom meetings are twice as long as they need to be
One way to make conversations both more productive and shorter is to abide by the principle
“Whenever one person speaks in a meeting and they’re going to give a point of view
the next person is likely to give a similar point of view
until you fill the allotted time,” Frei says
it can pave the way to bad decisions because people don’t feel comfortable breaking with the group
she recommends that meeting facilitators step in after the first person gives their perspective
“Can someone articulate a different point of view?” After the next person speaks
see if anyone is able to offer yet another distinct point of view
“meetings will go faster and be of higher quality.”
“It’s really good practice in the beginning of the meeting to say
Sometimes this caveat can also be included in the meeting agenda
so people know they don’t have to show up ahead of time
One way to help working parents is to minimize the time they spend on what Frei calls “non-value-added activities”—such as “anything that is being produced for internal consumers but doesn’t ever see the light of day” in public
“If someone on Zoom does a long PowerPoint
it’s a tragedy around the world,” Frei says
Company leaders should emphasize that the important thing in an internal meeting is conveying information
Freeing up a bit of time that was previously blocked off can be a small gift from the heavens
If all of these ideas sound like they’d benefit people without children as much as they would working moms
“is that if you make the organization better for working moms

A transmitter from German technology company Rohde & Schwarz successfully went into operation at the Wendelstein transmitter site of Bavarian public broadcaster BR on December 4
2018 as part of the 5G Today research project
fellow project partner Kathrein completed an antenna test operation at BR’s transmitter site in Ismaning near Munich
The introduction of 5G will open up a worldwide market with millions of smartphones and tablets acting as potential TV receivers able to combine live TV, catch-up and on-demand services, social networks and other media application, according to the project partners
very efficient distribution method is currently being created to provide stationary and
mobile users with high-quality linear and hybrid channels and services,” said Helwin Lesch
head of BR’s distribution and controlling department
“BR is particularly interested in the possibility of broadcasting radio and TV channels via 5G
The 5G-HTHP technology allows widescale distribution of content in the existing broadcast frequency range
No additional frequency spectrum is required for this.”
LTE Broadcast, also known as FeMBMS (Further evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service), was specified in 3GPP Release 14 in June 2017
It defines new options for broadcasting to LTE-enabled mobile user equipment such as smartphones and tablets
the upgraded standard allows high-power high-tower (HPHT) applications in downlink only mode while utilising the full signal bandwidth for multicast/broadcast applications
3GPP Release 14 defines an extended cyclic prefix (guard interval) and modes to enable operation without SIM cards
which is necessary for broadcast applications
The broadcast services are provided by BR and transferred to the R&S BSCC via an R&S AVHE100 headend
The transmitters in Ismaning and on the Wendelstein mountain form a Single Frequency Network (SFN)
which is to enable mobile and portable reception in the greater Munich area as well as on the main traffic routes between Munich and Salzburg
Kathrein developed a special antenna for the transmission of diversity signals for the transmitter station in Ismaning
12 UHF antenna fields were installed at a height of 200 meters
The project also included the installation of a 370-metre long
Another Rohde & Schwarz high-power transmitter with 7 kW output power for 100 kW ERP is to be connected to the antenna at the end of January 2019
The test broadcasting network will then be prepared for the measurements
The 5G field trial is established in Germany as part of the Bavarian research project 5G Today
The project is funded by the Bavarian Research Foundation
Under the leadership of the Institute for Broadcast Technology (IRT)
project partners Kathrein and Rohde & Schwarz are investigating large-scale TV broadcasts in the FeMBMS mode over 5G broadcast networks
The project is supported by Telefónica Germany and ARD’s Bavarian affiliate BR
who is providing two HPHT sites near Munich for this field trial
