administrators at Yale — now facing a federal investigation for its own admissions practices — have rallied behind the use of race-based affirmative action at institutions of higher education stems from a complaint filed by Students for Fair Admissions an anti-affirmative action group representing Asian-American college applicants in an effort to maintain a “racial quota” within its student body Harvard discriminates against Asian Americans by evaluating their personal qualities using a higher standard than peers of other races the suit has the potential to not only change Harvard’s admissions policies but also affect how Harvard’s peer institutions — including Yale — consider race as a factor in their admissions policies Harvard has repeatedly denied Students for Fair Admissions’ allegations and defended the school’s consideration of race as crucial to fulfilling its educational mission The Department of Justice and the Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Education are also currently investigating Yale’s own affirmative action policies to determine whether its admissions policies improperly discriminate on the basis of race especially against Asian-American applicants University President Peter Salovey announced the investigation and defended Yale’s admissions policies “I write now to state unequivocally that Yale does not discriminate in admissions against Asian Americans or any other racial or ethnic group to share information about our undergraduate admissions practices and to affirm our unwavering commitment to diversity as a pillar of this university,” Salovey wrote in the email In the wake of the Harvard suit and Yale investigation students have rallied behind the use of race-based affirmative action in admissions to maintain a diverse student body a group of students — former photography editor for the News Robbie Short ’19 Kaori West ’21 and Stella Xu ’21 — organized a photo campaign for students to show their support for affirmative action in anticipation of the Harvard trial “We have a lot more to lose as Asian Americans if we don’t support other races It’s important to build this unified movement with communities of color,” Rita Wang said “My hope is that Yale and Harvard are allowed to continue having affirmative action or some kind of inclusion of race I don’t want us to become a UC Berkeley meritocracy.” Unlike Yale and its peer Ivy League schools California schools are prohibited from considering race as a factor in college admissions California’s state legislature passed a law banning public institutions from considering race in admissions policies Asian American Cultural Center Director Joliana Yee echoed Salovey’s remarks adding that Yale’s current racial and socioeconomic makeup “looks the way it does because of affirmative action.” Yee said she believes many observers are misinformed about the Harvard lawsuit and the AACC will be hosting events in the upcoming weeks for students to learn about affirmative action and the Harvard case among other discussions about the history of race in America Yale College Dean Marvin Chun told the News that he agreed with Salovey’s defense of the University’s admissions policies The Harvard trial began Monday with opening statements from both the defense and plaintiff The lawyer representing Students for Fair Admissions claimed that the lawsuit does not intend to threaten campus diversity at-large but rather target Harvard’s discriminatory admissions practices specifically The attorney added that the university holds Asian Americans to a higher standard than applicants of other races to maintain racial quotas which are illegal under Title XI of the Civil Rights Act Harvard’s lawyer staunchly defended the university’s holistic admissions policy which considers race as one of many factors Yale joined 15 other universities and colleges in filing an amicus brief to support Harvard in the lawsuit The brief emphasized the importance of a diverse student body to fulfill the universities’ educational missions and stated that race-blind admissions would prevent schools from achieving full diversity within their student bodies the Justice Department backed the plaintiffs in the Harvard suit reversing its stance during the Obama administration said that while she hopes the trial rules in Harvard’s favor and upholds race-conscious admissions practices she is glad the lawsuit has prompted a conversation at Yale about issues of race and Asian-American identity told the News that some East Asian–American parents and communities — including the group suing Harvard — oppose affirmative action because they believe race-conscious admissions policies hinder the chances of qualified Asian-American applicants to secure a spot at elite schools tend to be less informed about how affirmative action works adding that fear can easily cause misinformation to spread among communities of Chinese parents a member of the Asian American Students Alliance saying that she hopes the photo campaign diversifies the conversation around affirmative action by highlighting the members of the Asian-American community that anti-affirmative action policies do not benefit — low-income Southeast Asians She added that these policies often benefit established Chinese-American families but often disregard students from immigrant backgrounds representatives from the Asian American Students Alliance board said that while racism should not be tolerated at any level of college admissions they refuse to be used as “model minorities to disparage and diminish the opportunities of other people of color.” The statement noted that allowing the voice of one subset of the Asian-American community to speak for all “threatens to erase” the stories of other less advantaged groups within the Asian-American umbrella The trial is set to conclude this November This website is using a security service to protect Medicine professor holds an active license to practice medicine in Connecticut and was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1977 according to state records publicly available online according to University spokesperson Karen Peart the delay in reporting Redmond occurred because Yale was not aware Redmond held an active medical license that Redmond — a researcher who did not see patients — was not licensed to practice in Connecticut,” University spokesperson Karen Peart wrote in an email Wednesday to the News “After we learned that he did have a license Peart did not respond to additional questions asking who misinformed Yale or why University officials did not verify publicly available information such as the status of medical licensure.  An independent Yale-commissioned investigation released this week found that Redmond sexually assaulted five students harassed at least eight others and performed three inappropriate genital and/or rectal exams on students over a 25-year period Though School of Medicine officials first learned Redmond engaged in sexual misconduct in 1994 the report stated that the medical school failed “to implement any meaningful monitoring mechanisms to ensure ongoing oversight” of Redmond’s conduct one student said they felt “uneasy and ashamed” about receiving a rectal exam but “wondered whether he was overreacting and misjudging the situation given Redmond’s medical license.”  Prior to the release of the report this week the University said that it was only aware of one inappropriate medical exam through investigating the 2018 UWC case a partner at Barasch McGarry Salzman & Penson in New York who has represented hundreds of clergy sexual abuse survivors called Peart’s justification for the delay “mystifying.”  “It’s a little hard to believe that the School of Medicine — which employs a lot of doctors many of whom are licensed in the State of Connecticut — didn’t think that he might have a license in the State of Connecticut,” Penson said “And as for thinking he didn’t have a license: As some of the core complaints were that he was conducting improper examinations it’s mystifying and a little hard to believe that nobody knew or thought to check with the Department of Health.” Wednesday’s response from Peart was not the first time Yale fielded questions about Redmond’s medical license In the midst of the independent investigation the News asked former University spokesperson Tom Conroy in a Feb 2019 email if Yale had reported Redmond to the state medical board following the 2018 UWC case.  24 that the University could not comment because the independent investigation was still ongoing.  “We don’t have an[y] updates on the investigation for you,” Conroy wrote I don’t have any responses to the questions you shared.”  Connecticut first granted Redmond his medical license in 1987 Redmond reported to the state that he currently practices his licensed profession in Connecticut though the records also say Redmond is not actively involved in patient care “There are many people who hold a medical degree but do not treat patients,” Peart told the News Wednesday Some doctors who do not treat patients maintain a state license and some do not.” The State Department of Public Health did not return the News’ inquiry earlier this year into the status of Redmond’s medical license given his misconduct.  state records say Redmond’s medical license is still active.  However the records also note that information related to medical malpractice and Connecticut hospital discipline is currently “the subject of a dispute.”  Marisa Peryer | marisa.peryer@yale.edu Jever Mariwala |  jever.mariwala@yale.edu In the hopes of gaining official recognition as a cultural house from the University the newly-formed Middle Eastern and North African Cultural House Club will offer programming similar to that provided by established cultural centers on campus next semester which will be formally registered as a student organization in January 2019 was spearheaded by members of the Arab Students Association and other cultural groups with the support of the Yale College Council The MENA club will host social events and activities at their current space in room 110 on 305 Crown St. similar to the programming offered by the University’s four official cultural centers The group gained access to the space in October after they approached the YCC with the idea to designate a cultural space for the MENA community Arab Students Association President Shady Qubaty ’20 said that the club will establish a peer liaison program — a central component of programming offered by the established houses — that will begin operating in the fall of 2019 If the University formally recognizes the MENA cultural center the center will receive administrative funding and a bigger dedicated space YCC’s task force director and a staff columnist for the News said that the club will need to demonstrate student interest and “full functionality” as a traditional cultural house to receive administrative support Seventy-six percent of 2100 respondents to YCC’s Fall Survey said they felt “strongly positive” or “positive” about the potential establishment of a MENA cultural house “The best argument we have to Dean Chun and other administrators is to show that MENA students are operating in the capacity of one of the cultural houses without having a house,” Landino told the News “We want to show that because they’re just as successful and they have student interest they deserve a house by putting truth to power.” Chun told the News that creating a new house or cultural center is a “big endeavor” that takes time and deliberation He added that he is happy to see “community building” among the MENA students and the formation of their separate club cultural houses have only been designated after “many many years” of the organizations’ growing influence and alumni involvement Qubaty said that the organization has been reaching out to the Persian Students Association Friends of Turkey and Ward 1 Alder Hacibey Catalbasoglu ’19 to build interest in the project we need Yale to meet us halfway,” Qubaty told the News “Students leading the effort should not remain idle while waiting for the gears of Yale bureaucracy to turn.” Catalbasoglu told the News it was “imperative” to establish a MENA cultural center where students can come together especially considering the current political climate in which Middle Eastern and North African Americans are “seen as scapegoats and targets by certain groups nationally.” But despite the efforts’ focus on students with a MENA background Qubaty stressed that “students have tried to create a homely environment for the room to be open but also to anyone interested in the region.” The club held its first meeting on Wednesday and will hold its second meeting this Thursday Between meetings with fellow administrators and Yale College Council leaders and spending quality time with his Havanese dog Pablo Dean of Yale College Marvin Chun will now be taking on a new — though admittedly familiar — responsibility: teaching his beloved Introduction to Psychology course To balance his roles as dean and professor Chun has made some changes to the course after 15 years of teaching He has invited many professors to serve as guest lecturers including professor of psychology Laurie Santos — who will teach the class in Battell Chapel on Thursday — and University President Peter Salovey — who will teach a class on love He will be running the course with the help of a course coordinator lecturer in the Department of Psychology Natalia Córdova who will assist him in logistical duties such as scheduling makeup exams “I’m super excited to get back to the classroom,” Chun told the News “After I was kind of winding up my first year as dean I felt I really enjoyed it but what was missing was interacting with students in the classroom and so when there was an opportunity to teach intro psych that’s why I jumped into it.” He told the News that he still wants to be “Professor Chun” to his psychology students — not Dean Chun — but that will require thoughtfulness when he teaches He noted that he spent much of winter break updating the curriculum and will devote his weekends to preparing for lecture because he needs a lot of time to plan out each course meeting Chun admitted that he felt nervous about teaching after several years but noted that it was the kind of nervousness you feel “before a big game.” Chun first joined Yale’s Department of Psychology and Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program as an assistant professor in the late 1990s He then taught at Vanderbilt University before returning to Yale in 2003 Chun is best known for his innovative uses of brain imaging and behavioral methods to study attention and has received several accolades for his research Chun spearheaded the effort to create the neuroscience major Chun became dean of Yale College in July 2017 He said he has a particular affinity for the introductory course because psychology is a valuable part of a liberal arts education Chun has often cited psychological research to encourage students to get enough sleep and prioritize their health While Chun has not scheduled regular office hours for the course he said he will linger after each class for 30 minutes to answer students’ questions Chun said he plans to cap the class around 500 students according to Yale Course Demand Statistics Several students interviewed by the News — all of whom are shopping the course — expressed enthusiasm about learning from Chun due to his expertise in the field “I’m looking forward to finding out what makes Chun such a magnetic presence on campus,” said Rachel Calcott ’22 “Chun is clearly brilliant at what he does and I’m excited to approach psych by learning from someone who’s at the cutting edge of cognitive research.” Calcott added that she is curious to see how deeply Chun engages with his students and the investment he’s able to make in their careers considering his status as a “celeb professor.” Ben Ihenacho ’22 told the News that Chun is a renowned researcher in his field and an inspiring professor Ihenacho said it is “wonderful” that Chun finds the time to connect to the students by teaching classes Though Michael Zhou ’22 said he is more excited about the class for the content and not necessarily because Chun is teaching it he added that he is excited to see Chun teach the class because he has “heard great things about him.” Past Yale College deans have also stepped back into the classroom during their deanships taught a course on African-American history from emancipation to the present Jever Mariwala | jever.mariwala@yale.edu The South Asian Society at Yale on Sunday hosted its annual intercollegiate South Asian dance showcase “Bulldog Dhamaal,” featuring performances by student groups from Harvard This year marked the third annual “Bulldog Dhamaal” at Yale The show opened and closed with dances by two Yale groups: Yale Rangeela and Yale Jashan Bhangra The other performance groups included Husky Bhangra Most of the acts at this year’s showcase were Bhangra groups as opposed to Bollywood fusion or classical dance groups “The cultural importance of this event is that it showcases a lot of different South Asian performing styles from dancing to singing and that’s something that people don’t get to experience regularly,” said President of the Yale South Asian Society Archeta Rajagopalan ’19 “It’s a chance to expose others on campus to a bit of South Asian culture and music and bring together a lot of different schools with the common goal of doing so.” Rajagopalan said the organization made an effort to intersperse performances by the Bhangra groups with acts by a cappella and Bollywood dance groups to offer variety to the audience They chose to open and close with Yale groups since it was a Yale-hosted showcase The South Asian Society contacted around 50 school teams about performing at Bulldog Dhamaal The organization sent out applications in December and the teams were selected based on performance videos noted that although at the start of the show Manek added that she nevertheless appreciated that performance groups from different schools came together to perform rather than compete She said she also appreciated that Bhangra served as the “major unifying factor.” “The primary audience is the Yale community I really think the showcase is for just about everybody,” Rajagopalan said my friends are super excited to sit front row and scream as loud as they can to cheer for the teams None of them prior to watching me dance experienced anything like that before so it really is a show that appeals to everyone and is accessible to everyone.” The South Asian Society’s next show will be an all-Yale performance in the fall called “Roshni.” Hip-hop artist A$AP Ferg will headline Spring Fling this year the Yale College Council announced on Wednesday at Toad’s Place Dagny and Madeon will accompany A$AP Ferg at this year’s concert Yale’s Spring Fling will feature four artists instead of three despite a $15,000 decrease in the YCC Spring Fling Committee’s budget co-chair of the YCC Spring Fling Committee “Obviously not everyone on campus is going to know every artist but we want to make sure that anyone who shows up will be able to enjoy the performance,” said Tyler Bleuel ’19 “So we want to make sure that the artist has good live energy and that the artists are able to feed off of the crowd and the crowd is able to feed off of the artist.” A New York native and member of the A$AP Mob hip-hop collective which also includes popular artist A$AP Rocky A$AP Ferg is viewed by many as a pioneer of the trap music genre Bleuel said that A$AP Ferg was the top choice on a YCC survey distributed in October His song “Plain Jane” has been on Spotify’s Top 50 for several months such as “Shabba” and “What Do You Do,” also have tens of millions of Spotify listens Bleuel said that Cupcakke’s music employs wordplay and social commentary that students will appreciate He added that she is “super energetic,” noting that the committee’s goal this year was to bring energy to Old Campus Cupcakke’s albums were on Rolling Stones’ list of the 40 best rap albums in 2016 and 2017 and she has received positive reviews for her recently released album “Ephorize.” Cupcakke is also known for her use of edgy profane lyrics — her most popular song is titled “Deep Throat.” I hope she does ‘Deep Throat,’” said Aakshi Aggarwal ’21 who noted that the watched videos of each artist in concert as they decided which artists to approach said he was excited to see all of this year’s acts “Dagny will likely be a new name for many students but she’s an amazing performer,” Bleuel said It’s impossible not to bop along to her music.” The YCC Spring Fling Committee distributed its annual survey in early October asking students to rank both their genre and artist preferences as well as their opinions on the order of the performances The organizers said that most students indicated they wanted the closing act to be EDM even though EDM is not a popular genre in general “Madeon is super exciting to have performing for us this year as one of the most sought after producers in the business,” said Griffin Solot-Kehl ’19 “Coming out of the overwhelmingly popular shelter tour and in the process of making a new project this year students will be thrilled to see somebody of the caliber of Madeon not only DJ but [also] give them a performance to remember.” Villalobas said the committee was able to successfully recruit four acts for this year’s concert because it started the process of finding artists earlier than in previous years after working with the YCC to set a baseline figure for the committee’s budget the committee also uses a variety of other methods to try to understand the genres and artists that currently interest students Committee members look at Spotify and Billboard charts attend different parties and go to Woad’s to “see what Yalies are singing the loudest to,” he explained Bleuel said the Spring Fling committee is constrained in its choices because Yale has a small budget for the event compared to other schools “We also have a tighter budget because of the vision that it’s the biggest party on campus and we want everyone to feel invited so we choose to keep it free for all students whereas other schools might sell tickets,” Bleuel said “We don’t want someone to have to think twice about going to this amazing event we’ve consistently had a pretty solid lineup.” the crowd of dancers reacted enthusiastically to the news that A$AP Ferg will headline Spring Fling despite technical problems with the YCC’s announcement video which featured Psychology and the Good Life professor Laurie Santos “It was disappointing that the video didn’t work but I’m just looking forward to Ferg,” said Simon Ghebreyesus ’21 Other students said they shared his excitement about A$AP Ferg’s performance but the others sounded fine,” Harry Westbrook ’21 said “The rap and EDM sounded like a good mix.” This year’s Spring Fling will take place on April 28 I ask them to put bacon on it — sometimes extra,” said Zulfiqar Mannan before an audience of nearly 100 at Muslim Monologues have sex out of wedlock and regularly put golden glitter or eyeshadow on my face I remember hiding in a little courtyard and asking Allah to make it hurt just a little the Yale Muslim Students Association hosted the its Muslim Monologues an event where students of Islamic backgrounds share their personal experiences as members of the faith through individual performances The performance was organized by Sana Mojarradi ’19 and Aaminah B’hat ’18 members of the Muslim Students Association It was the third in a series of events held in honor of Islam Awareness Week attracted a diverse religious and cultural audience The speakers told stories and performed spoken-word poetry to describe how they reconcile their personal identity and religion “We live in a country where the only Muslim known is sensational,” performer Ziad Ahmed ’21 told the audience “Headlines don’t sell when they portray us as we are Ahmed added that Muslims do not need to act as “stewards of their faith,” but they do have a responsibility to champion humanitarianism but all focused on similar themes: the generational divides in the pursuit of faith public perceptions of Islamic faith and surpassing heteronormative expectations imposed by society a member of the Yale Muslim Students Association who helped organize the event said no performer claimed to be a spokesperson for Islam but that the thread of Islam ties their experiences together Performers addressed the differences between their Muslim experiences in their hometowns and at university in a question-and-answer session after all of the performances had concluded “In school I always had to explain my religion is not that different from your religion,” said Lina Goelzer ’19 conversations are more about why I believe in a religion Performer Ahmed Syed ’18 said that his experiences in college have led him to realize how large the Muslim community at Yale really is Several members of the audience were moved to tears by the performances “As a Muslim it was really unique for me to hear different perspectives from Muslims on campus,” said Omair Khan ’19 “I liked hearing how they grappled with the religions themselves It was humbling because it helped me understand and appreciate how diverse our religion is I’m walking away with a renewed understanding of what it means to be Muslim.” Miho Carey ’21 said she enjoyed seeing the performers saying what they wanted to say about their faith in their own way it was beautiful to see the Yale Muslim community come together to showcase its members’ individual identities and stories we often forget that Islam is the religion of roughly 25 percent of the world population — it is by no means a monolith,” Syed told News “So I hope that one big takeaway for the audience from an event that highlights the beautiful diverse experiences of Muslims is that we shouldn’t buy in to generalized statements about people Both Harvard and Princeton universities have previously held Muslim Monologues an alternative a cappella group from Stanford University performed at Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall last Friday in a joint concert with Pitches & Tones The Yale Alley Cats and Proof of the Pudding Pitches & Tones organized the concert and invited the Stanford Harmonics to make New Haven the final stop in the group’s tour of the east coast The concert was meant to allow the Stanford and Yale groups to experience each other’s music “The actual songs performed at the concert and the way that the Yale groups performed were consistent with all of our other performances,” Hu explained “The main thing that made this concert special was that we were able to do it with the Stanford Harmonics The Harmonics’ lineup began with “Believer,” followed by “Brand New Day,” “Dream,” “Crossfire” and a mashup of three songs by Fall Out Boy snapping and clapping for the Stanford and Yale groups Members of Yale’s a cappella groups were excited by the turnout and the crowd’s energy “The turnout was wonderful for a Thursday night “The audience response seemed to be really positive and super excited about being able to see the Harmonics perform It definitely made planning the entire concert well worth it.” Hu emphasized that her favorite aspect of the concert was experiencing a cappella through the eyes of a different campus and community Annie Ng of the Stanford Harmonics said the turnout was “pretty fair,” but that she was less interested in who came to see the performance than in the performance itself “We don’t really pay too much attention to [the] amount of people in the audience and things like that,” said Annie Ng “We just love doing what we do and having fun on stage and we hope that translates no matter what size the audience.” This performance was The Alley Cats’ first joint concert with an a cappella group from Stanford The Alley Cats chose songs that catered to college students such as “Chandelier” and “If I Ain’t Got You,” said Mohit Sani “The audience and the performers fed off one another’s energy The Stanford Harmonics have released nine full-length albums Israeli singer-songwriter and global sensation Idan Raichel performed his English and Hebrew singles at Sudler Hall on Tuesday night Raichel is known for his global-fusion sound He has also previously collaborated with American pop stars like Alicia Keys The show began with a performance by Yale’s Jewish and continued with Raichel’s hour-long performance “I recently started performing outside of Israel since performing arts centers started inviting me to display world music,” Raichel told the News “I’m very lucky to be able to spread the word as a world music artist I want to spread the music and the messages of the song It’s the natural way of prosperity and expanding yourself.” Raichel’s Hebrew songs were often interspersed with English lyrics He told the News that he spoke only Hebrew until he was 24 at which point he began speaking English since he knew he would have to conduct interviews in the language He added that one of the main challenges he has faced is capturing “the ears and hearts” of his audience with English lyrics “I feel that world music artists are always writing the soundtrack of the places they are coming from,” Raichel said It’s important for world music artists to sing in their native tongue or the language they grew up speaking Raichel frequently conversed with his audience emphasizing his love for a “living room vibe.” He said he often invites people to sit in his living room while he plays his music and wishes to recreate that atmosphere during his concerts Raichel said he focuses on fostering an intimate environment Raichel also stressed the importance of taking time out of his busy schedule to spend time with his family “I went on this tour after nine months of being off the road,” Raichel told the audience “I decided to take the time off when I was on tour for three months and my daughter called me and said ‘Then why are you not coming home?’ I then realized it’s too much for them Then I thought I should take this time off.” a member of the New Haven community who attended the event said she was interested in the event because she was unfamiliar with Raichel’s solo material and had listened only to music from the Idan Raichel Project — a collection of songs recorded by Raichel in collaboration with a variety of artists Wilshinsky said she saw many familiar faces from New Haven’s Jewish and Israeli community at the concert said Raichel appeared to be multi-talented She added she was surprised to see him use a looper pedal a musical device that allows a single player to record snippets of music within a given space of time to be played back with the tap of a foot “I liked the emphasis that this is a sort of living room atmosphere,” attendee Miriam Ross ’21 said using a xylophone in a performance because it’s something his daughter likes to play with Raichel plans to release new singles in 2018 Students can now change their registered gender in the University Student Information System University Registrar Emily Shandley announced in an email to the Yale community Wednesday The policy change arrived two months after the Trans Rights Coalition at Yale — a newly formed group of Yale-affiliated organizations — launched a petition calling on University President Peter Salovey to uphold protect and reinforce trans rights at Yale students may change their gender online at any time If students wish to update their personal data on Yale’s Student Information System they will have three gender options: M for male Students have the option to fill in any additional information regarding their gender in a text box This change in the university system comes just months after The New York Times reported a leaked memo from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services that defined gender as an immutable biological trait under Title IX law “Recognizing the importance for students to be able to identify their gender beyond the standard binary options for legal sex in University records worked together to draft a policy for gender identity at Yale and to build the technology infrastructure to support a self-service option for student to change their gender at any time,” Shandler wrote in an email to the News Dean of Yale College Marvin Chun said that this addition helps University technology “catch up with current understanding and practice of gender.” Students have requested a simple way to update gender identity in University records for years Associate Director of the Office of LGBTQ Resources Andrew Dowe told the News Dowe added that the new system streamlines students’ ability to update their University records and will save time and energy for the many students who will use it While the University is federally required to maintain information about students’ legal sex in admissions records access to gender identity information in the University’s student records will be limited to individuals that have “a legitimate business or educational need for this information,” according to the University website But these individuals will still need to request access to gender identity information through the University registrar While some students interviewed praised the change Casey Odesser ’20 objected to the fact that Yale neglected to remove any reference to the gender binary Odesser said that forcing those who identify as gender nonbinary or nonconforming to disclose their identity could be dangerous especially in light of recent attempts by the Trump administration to legally fix the gender binary “as an objective truth from birth.” “I wonder for who’s benefit this new feature serves the students or the university,” Odesser wrote to the News “If Yale cared to support gnb/gnc students they might consider materially divesting from the gender binary rather than providing an additional category to an already essentialized construction.” Odesser added that gender identity is “relational and situated fluid and unstable” and that Yale’s new initiative reflects “a deep lack of understanding of the realities of gender subjectivity.” “The University’s recent addition of a system within which students can easily change their own gender identities to best reflect their own understandings of themselves is a shockingly powerful and even revolutionary change relative to how simple the solution itself is,” Abigail Clayton ’19 Clayton said that the small change will go a long way to alleviate the additional burdens that noncisgender students carry as they move through their Yale careers Clayton added that the creation of this new system represents the university “taking an active step” to advocate for students and that they are “thrilled” to see this kind of a policy change commended the University’s steps to make students’ gender choices viewable only on a “need-to-know” basis They added that this precaution “hopefully won’t lead to unnecessary outing.” “This is a great step towards making records systems that can often be very complex and restrictive to navigate that bit more validating for trans Yalies,” Carney told the News “It’s great that it’s easily accessible and requires no legal documentation.” Transgender Day of Remembrance was commemorated on Nov the invitation of guest lecturer Deanna Havas — a contemporary artist who has expressed “alt-right” statements on social media — to a School of Art class prompted protests from Yale School of Art students In an email to their professor of photography 8 prior to the lecture that day at 11 a.m. a group of students in the class wrote that they felt that the School of Art should not give a platform to Havas given her controversial social media presence The email contained a link to artist Luke Turner’s compilation of some of Havas’ Twitter posts — including a photo of a text message stating “If u kiss another girl I’ll come do a school shooting at your college,” and a Tweet stating “I’m dangerous bc u know ima pull a hitler if i don’t make it in art.” Havas is of Jewish descent Leifheit said he invited Havas to his graduate seminar on artists working in numerous media titled “How to Do Everything.” According to Leifheit poet and critic whose practice he thought “would bring educational value” to his course “I am deeply disturbed that the invited speaker at the center of the current debate achieved a platform within the School,” wrote Yale School of Art Dean Marta Kuzma in an email sent to the School of Art community on Oct Much of the controversy surrounding Havas’ social media presence is centered upon her liking a meme on Twitter that displays Pepe the Frog — a common trope in memes often appropriated by white nationalist groups — holding up a piece of stolen artwork as he runs from helicopters According to Turner’s Twitter response to Havas’ post the meme depicts and celebrates a recent incident in which the Traditionalist Worker Party — a neo-Nazi group — stole Turner’s artwork bearing the unifying message “HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US” from an art exhibit Kuzma wrote in her email that the University’s freedom of expression policies are integral to the growth of the community While she noted that her role is not to censor pedagogical decisions made by faculty members there is a difference between controversial artistic practices and an artist with a social media presence that expresses “hate and support of physical violence towards others.” She added that such a social media presence is “not necessarily controversial rather it is an expression of pure intolerance.” Kuzma did not respond to request for comment and School of Art Assistant Dean for Communications and Digital Media Sarah Stevens-Morling said that Kuzma did not have anything to add at the time beyond her communitywide email Kuzma held two town-hall meetings to engage in an open dialogue with students who wished to share their thoughts and concerns regarding Havas’ invitation to Yale Kuzma said these meetings were “productive and generative,” and that she is “heartened” to see the community coming together in a broader discussion about expression and the weaponizing of that freedom Leifheit told the News that he did not intend to cause controversy or pain by inviting Havas to campus He noted that Turner’s website took some of the social media content in question out of context Havas is “an ironist” and most likely did not mean for her offensive comments to be taken literally Leifheit added that “Havas’ politics are not mine but to suggest that her method of political critique is hate speech is a misunderstanding.” Leifheit told the News that he sent an email informing students that Havas’ presence on campus could be “potentially controversial.” But Kuzma stated in her email that “there could and should have been advance preparation for students attending and a heightened level of transparency about the speaker.” “I don’t think Deanna Havas deserves any more attention,” said Simone Cutrì ART ’19 “I don’t know if you know her ‘work,’ but I don’t think she deserves anything more from this institution [To] keep talking about her would just increase her ego I don’t agree on what she is standing for.” Cutrì requested that the News not cover the story about Havas asserting that Havas is waiting to receive negative critique that might bolster her social media presence and allow her to gain more followers The other 28 graduate students contacted by the News all declined to comment Director of Undergraduate Studies in the art department Lisa Kereszi addressed the undergraduate community in an email on Oct saying that she was as “shocked and confused” as many students were Kereszi added that “the administration” is working to move forward productively Havas’ Twitter account is currently deleted Lindsay Daugherty | lindsay.daugherty@yale.edu Already a member? on human trafficking and the rich abusing people at their will The movie invites the audience on a ride and refuses to change its gears Boyle establishes a wonderful premise but struggles to keep the audience awake by the time the film reaches its climax Mel Dale takes a ferry to the island of Fang Key to identify the body of her sister She senses something is off when the body is only recognizable by her tattoo Mel stays in the same hostel her sister stayed in act very kind and friendly with Mel while she investigates Georgia’s death Detective Alex Hurley isn’t too keen on helping and constantly advises Mel to return home with the body Despite being a property lawyer by profession Mel goes to great lengths to find her lost sister and she’s almost an amateur detective by the end She visited Fang Key to relax a little while before her trip to South America Mel is told that Georgia died while tombstoning off a cliff Mel doesn’t believe that Georgia would take part in such an activity Paula suggests that she might’ve been involved with the dark side of Fang Key Georgia’s death is even more suspicious because the police didn’t find her phone and passport insists that Georgia was wearing a bathing suit when she was found Nothing made sense about Georgia’s death Georgia’s body had a new tattoo when Mel went to the morgue; she noticed a triple infinity loop tattoo on her thigh Mel notices the same logo on a flyer at Paula’s fundraiser party The cops in Fang Key don’t seem to care about anything more than shutting down the case she’s told that it’s a financial opportunity for people and further details will only be given if the user uploads a selfie.  so she ran into a local bar to save herself and Mel and Jever bond over their liking for her and Paula describes him as a lowlife who wished to be Georgia’s friend Paula also mentions how Jever has a “side hustle,” and it’s best to keep her distance from him and he tells Mel that the last time he saw Georgia Mel decides to go ahead and upload a selfie Emily is ecstatic that she’s got a fancy job at a resort with better pay and a yacht is coming in a day to pick her up Georgia tells her that she’s at sea and asks about “Charlie” but Mel knows that Charlie is a keyword from their childhood The sisters would use this to communicate if they were in danger A video is posted from Georgia’s account; she says she’s doing a digital detox Mel is attacked by a stranger in her sleep until Jever receives a call from Alice saying that Mel hasn’t been taking her calls Mel followed Emily to the yacht and got on it to find out the truth A girl named Edith was talking them through it and Mel noticed her having the same tattoo she saw on the corpse Edith dismisses it and chalks it up to an impulsive decision on a wild night from her teenage years Edith also takes their phone from them; the “digital detox” isn’t complete without it.  Mel and Emily reach the island; they’re taken to a mansion immediately It turns out it’s Paula and Keaton who own this place Keaton offers the girls to either stay as guests or join their team Mel searches for her sister around the mansion and she overhears a conversation between Keaton and Paula not knowing she has a social media following and a family who’d look for her The search for Georgia finally ends when Mel finds her in a room with her legs tied up They sneak their way out of the mansion into the woods but the securities become an obstacle in their path The sisters are brought back to Keaton and Paula Alice calls Jever to find out where Mel is The island is not present on the official maps and Jever tells Alice the coordinates before getting captured by the security.  By now Mel has figured out the whole deal between Paula and Keaton Paula used to find girls without much money in their banks and those who would not be missed by their friends and families Her hostel was the perfect place to recruit such girls before she could manipulate them into taking the job on the island It was on that island Keaton ran his whole operation of turning such girls into playdates for his clientele and all sorts of people with influence and money He’s certain that his clientele demands a unique experience from his service and he won’t be taken down by anyone Mel asks Paula what kind of woman she has to be to help Keaton exploit innocent women It’s now that Paula experiences a change of heart and shoots Keaton before he causes further damage Jever takes Mel and Georgia back to Fang Key where Alice waits for her lost daughters.  Danger on Party Island squanders a perfectly set premise due to its predictable climax Paula and Keaton’s true faces could be seen way before they’re revealed The characters never get time for any development; everyone is either treated as a suspect or a victim Shabby editing and the movie’s lacklustre treatment of the settings make the watching experience a lot worse than it should’ve been Boyle’s “Danger on Party Island” is surely going to be one of the worst watches of this weekend because I have never seen such a horrifying climax to a thriller in a long The film follows the suspected murder of Georgia Dale There is not even a singular plot twist that will captivate you by any means you can skip this one whenever it pops up on your eyesight The film starts with Mel arriving on the island and visiting the morgue where she finds her sister Georgia’s dead body She learns that Georgia has put a new tattoo on her thigh She learns that Georgia’s body was found in the place where people often go for cliff-jumping Mel is reminded that Georgia is afraid of heights So why would she go there in the first place Later we see Mel visiting Paula and Keaton’s hotel where Georgia was staying Paula receives her warmly and comforts her in this difficult time Mel discusses with her that if Georgina really went cliff-jumping Paula responds that she has been trying to help so many lost souls in her own ways She has been the kindest woman Paula has ever known This chatter somehow helps Mel to get over her sister’s loss for the time being Mel starts roaming on the island and later meets with Jever They were close friends and seldom met in the bar Mel wants to know if Kaya knows anything about how Georgia died Kaya seems to be so much within herself or perhaps since she has lost her close friend Kaya says Georgia was wearing a swimsuit when her body was found Since no one really dies during cliff-jumping Kaya’s suggestion is that Georgia killed herself and there is nothing really that Mel can do about it Kaya also mentions that local people say that the beach is haunted Paula invites her to the fundraiser event later in the evening knowing that not only Georgia but there are other girls who went missing from the island are trying their best to put more security so that the safety measures increase Mel finds a flyer that has the same triple infinity loop drawn When Mel asks about the structure to Paula But the route seems to be confusing for Mel She looks at the map and finds no clue about where she is going She also tries to contact the number given in the flyer so that she can find out more about the triple infinity loop the place is not directly in front of the hotel Mel starts investigating every bits and pieces from wherever possible She learns from Jever that the law enforcement on the island does not act honestly she meets with Kaya again and learns about another missing girl named Faye she hears back from the phone number she found in the flyer knowing that Georgia had been friends with Faye too and Faye had the same tattoo as her an unknown voice message drops on her phone which tells that Georgia was seen in the forest performing some hippie thing with music Mel follows the route that the voice text shows and ends up inside the forest she listens to some music and follows the sound She comes to realize that this whole thing was a setup and goes back to her room Mel’s mother suddenly calls her and tells Georgia that she has uploaded a video saying that she is alive Mel checks it out and then goes straight to the detective in charge of the case She tells him that this video proves nothing because if she is really on holiday why would she leave her passport and everything important behind The detective seems to be angry when Mel starts questioning a lot Sarah tells her that an opportunity has come up and she is leaving the work in the hotel for that and they celebrate Georgia’s return with a glass of wine Georgia calls Keaton’s phone and shares a code word with Mel Mel finds herself in an uncomfortable position as her head starts to swing It is definite that there was something in the wine and Mel goes straight to her room She later meets with him in his boat and learns that some masked men attacked him in the bar leaving him with no option but to close it Mel leaves Jever’s boat in order to pick up her mother that she has not seen Mel since she arrived here as she has mentioned Sarah’s situation earlier as we see Mel accompanying Sarah to the boat that was sent by the people who promised her a better job When Mel and Sarah arrive at a different island they are received by a car and end up in front of a huge castle-like house Mel learns that Paula and Keaton run this place where women are used to giving pleasure to some of the top businessmen and politicians around the world Mel even finds the detective who was in charge of Georgia’s case inside the house Paula is shocked to see Mel inside the house she threatens Mel mildly that if she tries to do anything Mel overhears Keaton talking to Paula about finishing both the sisters Mel searches door to door inside the huge house and finally finds Georgia being tied up in one of the rooms Mel learns that the body that was found earlier was Faye’s Since both she and Faye looked almost the same it was Paula and Keaton’s plan to say Georgia’s name instead of Faye’s Alice has called the county police as Jever tries to enter the property to help Mel Keaton is shot by Paula when he tries to shoot Georgia Paula has had enough of Keaton’s continuous bullying and torture When Mel tells her that she has picked the wrong side as a woman this perhaps triggers her conscience even more than ever Paula helps Mel escape along with Georgia and Jever and Georgia express their gratitude to Jever Shovan Roy is an avid filmmaker enthusiast dedicated to unraveling the magic of the cinematic world Passionate about Halls is absolutely the new trend nowadays In the recent years ski halls became especially popular in the regions situated far from the mountains and with people who want to ski and snowboard even in summer Ski halls are also popular with people for whom it is also not always possible to make a journey to the Alpine regions Ski halls are also the rescue for the ski with the stigma of “distant Birth” – the regions situated away from the snow mountains Manmade snow covers the sloping floors of the closed Ski Halls Skiing and snowboarding are here all year round The German ski halls are distributed across the country They are particularly successful and situated close to the big cities The famous German ski halls are situated in Neuss (all year round winter world Wittenburg (Snow Funpark Wittenburg) and Bispingen (Sno Fun Park Bispingen) The remaining space can be German indoor ski but refrain – the Swiss and the Austrians have enough opportunities for skiing to your mountains particularly the halls of the Benelux countries should be mentioned it seems it is here there are many ski admirers But in Spain also they can ski in summer far away from the mountains the largest ski hall in Spain is situated in Xanadu Shopping Centre It is rather exotic to see the ski halls in the desert. There is a ski hall (Dubai Skiing) right in the centre of Dubai In Abu Dhabi one can also ski during hot summer months (Snow World Abu Dhabi situated in the Marina Mall) China is also in the range of modern Ski Halls in big cities: skiing is possible in Chinese Shanghai and the Olympic city Beijing So far the longest indoor ski run in the world is 640 meters and it is situated in Bottrop The first indoor ski slope “The Red Slope” with the gradient of 31% is currently situated in the Wittenberg Snow Fun Park There is also a halfpipe for snowboard competitions here The indoor halfpipe is even suitable for the International Ski Federation competitions (Federation Internationale de Ski the first International German championships were held in this halfpipe in October 2007 Skiurlaub-infos.com presents some of the big ski halls skiurlaub-infos.com (c) 2007-2019in network Holiday Homes
