A core requirement in a recently enacted New York City law governing the use of AI in employment decisions promises to impact how HR leaders choose
and oversee technology vendors for years to come
The law, which took effect July 5
requires employers in New York City to conduct an annual third-party AI “bias audit” of technology platforms they use for hiring or promotion decisions and to publish the audit findings on their websites
The audits are designed to ensure AI tools used in such systems don’t discriminate on the basis of race or gender
While the new law covers only one jurisdiction
legal experts and HR technology analysts say it’s only a matter of time before other states and jurisdictions enact similar—if not more sweeping—legislation that will include stipulations to conduct AI bias audits
that future laws may require audits for potential age and disability bias
not just the more-narrow gender and race discrimination covered by Local Law 144 in New York City
The result is HR functions will need to take a proactive role in ensuring both internally developed AI tools and any AI used in vendor systems for employment decisions are regularly audited by qualified third-party auditors for bias
since HR can ultimately be held responsible if regulators find the AI tools it uses for hiring or promotion decisions are discriminatory—even if those tools are part of technology vendors’ platforms
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently provided guidance on the legal responsibility employers have when bias is found in their vendors’ AI tools
Just as 401(k) plans are regularly audited to ensure they meet IRS regulations and computer systems are audited for cybersecurity reasons
so too should HR leaders now expect that the AI they use for employment decisions will be scrutinized in similar fashion
SHRM Online went behind the scenes with two organizations that recently underwent AI audits and also interviewed experts on what to expect from a bias audit
how to choose a credible third-party auditor and what the future of AI auditing holds for HR functions
While most HR technology vendors conduct third-party AI audits in response to current or pending legislation
some also believe it’s simply good business practice and presents an opportunity—through lessons taught by auditors—to educate themselves on avoiding AI-based discrimination in the future
a talent intelligence platform in Bellevue
said his company had a third-party auditor conduct a bias audit of its AI tools for a combination of reasons
“The reality is that regulators from the New York City Council to the Federal Trade Commission have put employment AI bias directly in the crosshairs with both existing and future laws,” Shaddox said
“Performing a bias audit also is an integral part of not just our broader responsible AI program but also our approach to compliance.”
analyzed the performance of AI features in the vendor’s products with respect to various demographic groups
it assessed whether searches for various job titles in our candidate database provided results that were representative of expected demographic information,” he said
“Having an outside measurement point was helpful in both validating and furthering our commitment to minimizing bias in our product offerings.”
a research manager specializing in recruiting and talent management for Miami-based Nucleus Research
said because liability for any AI-created bias in employment decisions ultimately falls to employers and not vendors
it’s vital for HR to play a role in encouraging its vendor-partners to have their AI tools audited—whether the vendor operates in a jurisdiction where legislation requires them to do so or not
“It’s important for one to bring in an independent auditor that specializes in AI bias to show you’re trying to comply with the EEOC guidelines,” McMullen said
“The first financial penalties will likely fall on employers that fail to at least attempt to address bias in algorithms
even though specific criteria or mandates may not have been set.”
founder and auditor general of Aspen Analytics
N.J.-based HR technology advisory firm that conducts AI bias audits
said the need for AI auditing is likely here to stay
given current and pending legislation not just in the United States but around the world
“This isn’t just a New York issue or an Illinois issue
there’s a lot of pending legislation on the books in other states that will regulate the use of AI for employment decisions,” Gadomski said
“The number of technology vendors that only operate in one jurisdiction
and that only get job candidates from that same jurisdiction
Another HR technology vendor that opted to have its AI tools audited by a third party is New York City-based Pandologic
which provides programmatic recruitment and conversational AI services
vice president of marketing for Pandologic
said the company chose to have its technology audited in advance of enactment of the NYC law or other legislation that might impact its operations
“We realized it was important even if it wasn’t necessarily required of us to be proactive as a HR technology vendor to audit our own technology,” Boyle said
“We wanted to ensure we were using our algorithms in the correct way to reduce bias and then share that information with our customers.”
Pandologic hired third-party auditor Vera to review the company’s programmatic algorithms and its conversational AI for bias
The Vera audit team began the process by gathering historical data from Pandologic for analysis
“The auditor did a series of requirements-gathering in the beginning
working with our product team to analyze the different AI models behind our programmatic technology,” Boyle said
“They wanted to understand which of those models could potentially introduce bias to the process.”
The auditors identified a few algorithms with such potential and “did a deeper dive on them,” Boyle said
recreating a number of use cases of how different customers interact with the Pandologic platform
On the programmatic recruitment side auditors analyzed Pandologic’s “job expansion” algorithm that’s designed to help customers increase the visibility of their job postings in additional Zip codes
“We wanted to look at whether targeting those expanded Zip codes was going to yield greater or lesser candidate diversity than the original Zip codes programmed into a hiring campaign,” Boyle said
Audit results came back in a favorable light
“We found the Zip code expansion algorithms were actually increasing diversity of the labor force being targeted with regard to race and gender,” Boyle said
Pandologic said such an AI audit with the auditor it used could cost anywhere from $20,000 to $75,000 depending on the complexity of the products being audited and the analysis required
Boyle said a valuable byproduct of the audit were lessons learned from the auditor during the process
“It was an eye-opening experience to us in regard to what questions the auditor asked,” she said
“There’s a lot to be gained from a third-party firm coming in to look under the hood and ask some tough questions
AI is something we intend to scale across additional aspects of our business going forward
so we believed it was important to understand where problems can arise with bias.”
Boyle said one thing the auditor recommended to Pandologic was that it start including a note in its programmatic adverting to let both job seekers and employers know that AI is being used in the process
Because AI bias auditing is a relatively new practice with few established norms
experts say it’s vital that HR leaders verify the technology vendors they partner with are using credible auditors with the proper expertise to conduct any AI bias audits
“The selection of a qualified auditor is especially important today,” said Shaddox of SeekOut
“A third-party AI bias assessment has to be conducted by a neutral third party that has expertise in AI
relevant regulations and industry frameworks.”
Gadomski said given the growing demand for AI audits more opportunistic vendors are entering the space
“There’s a lot of snake oil in AI auditing already,” he said
Experts say HR should work with internal legal teams to ensure AI auditors have no financial or fiduciary interest in a company they’re auditing and that the auditor doesn’t sell its own AI products
Auditors also need to understand a company’s risk profile and which current or pending regulations the organization being reviewed may be subject to based on jurisdictions where it operates
a HR technology vendor shouldn’t be allowed to filter its own data for an auditor,” Gadomski said in describing sound auditing practices
“An auditor that asks a technology vendor to send it a laptop without any filtering is good practice
as opposed to an auditor that says ‘send me a spreadsheet and I’ll run an audit for you.’ How does the auditor know the latter is a true representation of your data?”
chief research officer for Lighthouse Research and Advisory in Huntsville
said third-party auditors also should be chosen for their ability to educate as well as for their auditing acumen
“You should be looking for a partner that is willing to teach
because at the end of the day you as the HR leader will have to explain it [the audit findings] to your own leadership,” Eubanks said
Other experts say AI bias auditing is quickly becoming an evergreen commitment and third-party auditors should be viewed as long-term partners
And although an annual audit is required by the NYC law and considered a current norm
some experts believe more frequent audits may be a better practice
it would be wise for employers to conduct a third-party audit every time an algorithm they use is changed in any way to minimize risk,” McMullen said

Former Pitt receiver Devin Street is on the move
The good news for him is that he didn't last long before signing with the New York Jets this week
Street was added by the team after they placed receiver Quinton Patton on injured reserve
How long his stay is in New York, however, isn't clear. As SB Nation's Jets site Gang Green Nation points out
Patton himself was going to have difficulty in sticking with the roster as the team has quite a few young receivers with potential
But he will be entering his fourth NFL season and with four teams having taken a chance on him
The Jets did part ways with Brandon Marshall
who led the team in both catches and targets
have both had more NFL success than Street and are younger
Compounding the problem for Street is that the team drafted receivers in the 3rd and 4th rounds of the NFL Draft earlier this year
Those guys will obviously get more priority than a guy like Street
this looks like a move to simply bolster the offseason/camp roster

Their iconic Learjet invented the notion of business aviation
while its Global 7500 expanded how fast and how far the industry could go
Bombardier is at the forefront of innovation in sustainability and emission reduction
2020 marked the beginning of a new chapter—one that would focus the business and see it evolve from a manufacturing stalwart to an innovative
It’s a shift that has served their business well
leadership realized the Bombardier needed to evolve to reflect the breadth of how they serve customers: designing
and servicing the world’s most exceptional aircraft
bigger than the sum of its award-winning products
Bombardier authentically shared DNA with the customers they served: the world’s most discerning and impactful leaders
That led us to a powerful brand idea — At Your Altitude —evocative of Bombardier’s connection and empathy for customers
and an unmatched ability to operate at their level
It’s reminiscent of the experience Bombardier creates for its customers—one where every moment is thoughtfully curated and second to none
advertising image of woman standing next to plane seat with bombardier tagline
who bring the best of themselves to work every day to deliver that elevated experience
We further encapsulated that idea in a new employee value proposition
weaving the deep passion and expertise of Bombardier’s employees into the fabric of the new brand
7500 written out in bombardier brand colors
it needed to be stewarded by a powerful brand expression system that positioned them as a focused aviation business
The evolved visual expression is built around the new logo: the Bombardier Mach
It features the silhouette of an aircraft breaking the sound barrier—an ode to the ambition and innovative spirit of its people—while the strokes of wind over an aircraft reference Bombardier’s heritage LearJet brand
including more eye-level voice and messaging
connect to bring a curated focus on customers and define what an elevated experience can be
The surrounding system is fluid and organic
showcasing both the brand’s precision to craft and its commitment to creating a warm
bombardier plane flying over mountain range
We expanded the visual expression to the livery: a striking engineered pattern of the Mach symbol creates a sense of precision and wind flow motion over the aircraft
A bold Mach symbol on the vertical stabilizer creates a clear statement and recognizability
Subtle details highlight the brand’s best-in-class engineering
like the black winglets with the Mach symbol
The pattern stretched from portside to starboard creates an immersive feeling
since Bombardier’s existing brand equity was largely in its products
we crafted a brand architecture system that helps drive an emotional connection to the new Bombardier
We translated the idea of at your altitude into an advertising campaign anchored in the line: Your reflection in the sky
The campaign pays homage to the fact that Bombardier’s aircraft are crafted in the image of those who need them
Whether it’s a business executive or a seasoned pilot
a Bombardier aircraft is a mirror to their quiet confidence and attention to detail
To drive excitement internally and empower employees to become advocates of the brand
we created engaging global training materials to help leaders and employees understand the new Bombardier
and what it means to foster a heart meets mastery culture
The new Bombardier was revealed to the world on April 24

Measurement and sensor solutions from SIKO are not only found in established industrial applications
SIKO GmbH is also currently supporting an agricultural research and development project with two rotary encoders from its range for mobile machines
“AurOrA” (Autonomous Orchard Assistant Altes Land) is a small autonomous vehicle
which in future will move independently around fruit orchards and detect full fruit boxes
pick them up and take them to a defined unloading point
The robot eases the burden on harvest workers and allows them to concentrate on more challenging tasks
The idea for the project comes from practice
Fruit farmer Johann Schröder from Jork in the “Altes Land” region south-west of Hamburg asked hochschule 21 in Buxtehude for help in developing an autonomously operating vehicle
It is currently in the last third of the planning stage
having achieved its second milestone: the robot can already operate largely autonomously in an orchard
Work is still being carried out on avoiding collisions and detecting the ground conditions
to avoid getting the wheels stuck in muddy ground
Milestone number three will then be to pick up a box and transport it
A development project of this sort always poses challenges
starting with coordination of the interests of various fruit farms
which often have very different harvesting processes
such as a stable cell phone standard so that the robot can receive GPS data and communicate with the operator
to practical difficulties in day-to-day outdoor operation
Sensors that carry out various measuring tasks are needed for a vehicle that operates autonomously
Measurement and sensor specialist SIKO was called in to work on the steering angle detection and positioning of the box holders
With many years of experience in mobile machines and agricultural machine technology
SIKO was able to contribute its expertise to the planning phase and ultimately came up with two suitable rotary encoder types that support these important functions
appreciates the work of the SIKO experts: “We were pleasantly surprised by the willingness of SIKO to support future-oriented projects and how committed they were in offering their advice
we were not even sure what requirements we actually had of the sensors
We worked all this out and defined it together.”
potential sensors must be extremely robust and resilient in the face of tough outdoor conditions (mud
Components in the PURE.MOBILE range of sensor modules from SIKO are particularly suitable for use in mobile machines under harsh environmental conditions
A double wheel is fitted to the back of the vehicle
which can rotate and thus control the steering
and sent to the controller by the WV5800M magnetic rotary encoder
This is a multiturn rotary encoder by means of which even multiple rotations can be detected absolutely
because the batteries are flat for example
the steering angle previously set is still present
this would incorrectly be set as the zero degrees angle when the vehicle is started up again
The magnetic measurement principle meets the requirements of robustness and resilience
The high precision and reliability of the rotary encoder also impressed the team
meaning that the vehicle always adjusts its steering angle so that it keeps to its defined path — without failures or unacceptable deviation from tolerances
In order to increase safety in interaction with the people working in the orchard still further
the WV58MR safety variant of the rotary encoder with redundant position detection will be used for future vehicles to reliably prevent failures
the focus was initially on technical feasibility
so that the rotary encoder without the safety standard was adequate
The plus point of the SIKO models: the two rotary encoders are identical in design
so that no mechanical adjustments need to be made to the application when swapping them
It is a single turn rotary encoder which monitors the position of the box holders
The filled fruit box is picked up at four points by one flipper for each
When the robot moves over the box and the spring-loaded holders touch it
then open automatically and are then located under the four corners of the box for pick-up
In order to be able to transport the box safely
the position of each flipper must be known: Has it really swiveled back or has it jammed
Are all four flippers under the box to ensure that it is picked up correctly
so a miniature rotary encoder was required which could be used directly without a special holder

avian history was made while simultaneously changing the significance of the red carpet look forever
The garment in question was designed by Marjan Pejoski
and came from Björk's inspiration to send a message in the briefest and most effective way possible
"I was very aware when I went to the Academy Awards that it would probably be my first and last time
So I thought my input should really be about fertility
When she mentions eggs, that is not just a metaphor. At the awards ceremony, Björk literally had an egg underneath her gown, squatted to the ground and then proceeded to "lay it" in front of the masses.
Predictably, this dress caused quite the stir. Fashion commentators like the late Joan Rivers noted, "the girl should be put into an asylum," while others said that she was simply there to provide the "kook factor," whatever that actually means
Björk's decision to wear this gown to one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies out there indicates that there was more to this look than being just
as we find ourselves fondly reminiscing two decades later while our society is largely still on pause
one can't help but wonder: Can we return to a time where there's another swan dress moment
But even then, part of the excitement around King's gown centered on her senior dog, 15-year-old Cornbread, who appeared in the background as she modeled her sequined Louis Vuitton dress
There's a level of humanity to these remote ceremonies that's heartwarming
and yet removes some of the performance aspect of wearing such elaborate attire
This humanity can also be taken to extremes. An exhausted-looking Jason Sudeikis was a topic of discussion that same night for wearing a now sold-out tie-dye hoodie for his unexpected acceptance speech for best actor in Apple TV's comedy series "Ted Lasso."
Some other highlights of these more laid-back looks include Jodie Foster's pajama set to accept her award for best supporting actress, as well as Chloe Zhao's green long-sleeve shirt and braids for best director of a motion picture
While these people have every right to simply be comfortable at home
this gravitation towards a casual awards ceremony could mean trouble for the future of the very shows themselves
Without the promise of celebrities looking their best in designer duds
fans of all kinds or even just fashion enthusiasts may not tune in
Adweek reports that viewership for the Golden Globes has taken a sharp decrease with about 6.9 million viewers in 2021
and the lowest turnout the ceremony has faced in about 26 years
The trend is not isolated to just the Globes: The Emmys
and the American Music Awards also saw significant decline in their numbers
This could be attributed to a number of factors
like a global pandemic still raging that would likely distract some from the navel-gazey nature of watching rich people talk about each other for an entire evening
But it could partially be due to the fact that the excitement involved with keeping up with your favorite celebrities' outfits is for the most part
it's much less satisfying to try and parse the entire thing via a grainy Zoom display
It's difficult to say whether or not these kinds of moments will have a place in future award ceremonies or red carpets
Perhaps people have lost interest in the usually long
drawn-out shows and their stale writing that caters to an impossibly small niche of the human population
But if there is a renewed interest in the costuming spectacle that we witnessed in meat dresses past, then maybe we'll get a comeback post-COVID. And leading the flock will always be a small Icelandic woman in a white feathered get-up.

The Hauschildt family fruit farm has been in Jork since 1570
Patrick Hauschildt took over the heritage of the traditional farm
"The old packing plant will be abandoned in favour of a new operation
although the fruit farm in Wisch will continue to exist
we will now have an area of 4,500 sqm at our disposal," Hauschildt informs us
just under 800 square metres will be used as refrigerated space directly adjacent to several loading ramps
there are several refrigerated warehouses in which more than 3,500 large crates
the company is able to handle up to 50 per cent more goods per day thanks to the newly available automated complete solution
both apples and pears are packed on nine lines
a lot of goods from other farms in the Alte Land are also bundled with us."
In addition to classic foodtainers in units of four and six
the company offers a wide range of different packaging formats as well as bags and nets
the trend is increasingly towards solid cardboard packaging
About half of the packaging that is marketed is cardboard."

A claim by Russian military forces on Tuesday to have captured New York might have drawn more than a few double takes
Moscow was referring to a town in eastern Ukraine previously known as Novgorodskoye
“One of the largest settlements in the Toretsk agglomeration and the strategically important logistics hub of Novgorodskoye of the Donetsk People’s Republic was liberated,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Telegram
a suburb of Toretsk in the Donetsk region with a pre-war population of 10,000
would be the latest area to fall under Russian control during a series of advances in eastern Ukraine
but prior to the Cold War was also known as “Нью-Йорк,” rendered variously as Neu Jork or Niu York
Ukrainian armed forces confirmed on Tuesday that Russia had attacked settlements in the area
but did not acknowledge the capture of the village
Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda reported that Kyiv’s forces were still holding the line in the northern part of the village
and that fierce battles were taking place nearby

The New York Jets rushing attack was very unimpressive in week 1 and rookie running back Braelon Allen didn’t even get a chance to make a difference
Will the Jets allow Allen to be an asset in week 2
the New York Jets cannot afford another lack luster offensive performance from Hall
transferring some of Hall’s touches to Allen makes sense for various reasons:
The Jets do in fact need Hall in the screen passing game and on those quick outside zone runs
the Jets' should give Allen some carries to help maintain the attrition of the offense

the current stock in the Altes Land is below average
"It was clear to us from the outset that the harvest volume would be lower this season
We have taken precautions so that we can continue to supply our customers with produce from the Altes Land
the current situation is not alarming," reports Jürgen Schliecker from the fruit wholesale business of the same name in Jork
we may not be able to make a seamless transition to the new harvest
has not made an appearance so far and is particularly predestined for the last phase of the marketing season."
Aerial view of the modern company location in Jork
and there is a correspondingly high sorting rate
attempts are being made to control the outflow of quantities through higher prices
we are seeing that the lower price segment and extensive promotions are mainly being served by imported goods
mainly from South Tyrol and occasionally also from Poland
There are also promotions with Altes Land apples
but not to the same extent as in other years
The main focus is on continuity: it is particularly important to us that we can supply the trade with regional apples all year round." Overall
the producer prices for domestic storage apples are around 12% higher than last year
"It's difficult to raise prices currently because the difference to imported goods will eventually become too great
we are optimistic that we will be able to achieve good prices for our producers when marketing the Jonagold group this summer."
KG Fruchthandels KG also offers overseas goods that it imports itself
the first programs with Royal Gala from overseas will start in German food retail
Italian Royal Gala should be almost cleared by then
Due to the increased self-sufficiency in Great Britain
one of the most important markets for Italian Braeburn has almost disappeared
they are trying to increase the frequency in Germany
which is also an important sales market for Braeburn
The first overseas Braeburns will then follow from around mid-May
In addition to the main business with food retailers
the Schliecker company also has a stall at the Bremen wholesale market
Allergy-friendly apple and pear cultivationMeanwhile
the carousel of varieties in the apple sector continues to turn
"The Wellant is a good example of a variety that no longer has the status of a club apple
but which has firmly established itself on the market due to its excellent taste
its share of the total cultivation has risen sharply in recent years
you always have to be careful not to overdo it and increase cultivation capacities too quickly
especially since the shelf space is still limited in relation to the large number of club varieties."
Schliecker is also working closely with the Züchtungsinitiative Niederelbe (ZIN) and other local partners on the market launch of the so-called ECARF varieties
grown exclusively in the Altes Land region
which we want to use to appeal to people with apple allergies in particular
The first quantities will be ready for marketing in the coming season
The official brand name of the varieties will be announced in an accompanying advertising campaign."

pear cultivation in the Altes Land is also continuing to gain in importance
which is reflected in a steady increase in acreage
"Regionally produced pears have always been an integral part of our portfolio
there was an almost seamless transition this year
with the last batches in storage being cleared just in time for the start of the overseas season at the beginning of March," he concludes

Using the latest techniques in forensic archaeology
the University of Reading has revealed a new image of multi-cultural Roman Britain
New research demonstrates that 4th century AD York had individuals of North African descent moving in the highest social circles
The research conducted by the University of Reading's Department of Archaeology used modern forensic ancestry assessment and isotope (oxygen and strontium) analysis of Romano-British skeletal remains such as the 'Ivory Bangle Lady'
in conjunction with evidence from grave goods buried with her
The ancestry assessment suggests a mixture of 'black' and 'white' ancestral traits and the isotope signature indicates that she may have come from somewhere slightly warmer than the UK
Taken together with the evidence of an unusual burial rite and grave goods
the evidence all points to the Bangle Lady's high status in Roman York
It seems likely that she is of North African descent
and may have migrated to York from somewhere warmer
Senior Lecturer at the University of Reading
said: "Multi-cultural Britain is not just a phenomenon of more modern times
contradicts common popular assumptions about the makeup of Roman-British populations as well as the view that African immigrants in Roman Britain were of low status
The research helps paint a picture of a Roman York - or Eboracum as it was known - that was hugely diverse and which included among its population
women and children of high status from Romanised North Africa and elsewhere in the Mediterranean
Eboracum was both an imperial fortress (it was the last base of the famous Ninth Legion) and civilian settlement
and ultimately became the capital of Britannia Inferior
the North-African-born Emperor Septimius Severus
and later Constantius I (both of whom died in York)
All these factors provide potential circumstances for immigration to York
and for the foundation of a multicultural and diverse community
we have had to rely on evidence of such foreigners in Roman Britain from inscriptions
by analysing the facial features of the Ivory Bangle Lady and measuring her skull compared to reference populations
analysing the chemical signature of the food and drink she consumed
as well as evaluating the evidence from the burial site
we are now able to establish a clear profile of her ancestry and social status," adds Dr Eckardt
The Bangle Lady was a high status young woman who was buried in Sycamore Terrace
Dated to the second half of the fourth century
her grave contains jet and elephant ivory bracelets
The most famous object from this burial is a rectangular openwork mount of bone
The research was funded by the AHRC and conducted by the University of Reading's Department of Archaeology
working with the Yorkshire Museum's collections
The museum will open in August 2010 following a major £2 million refurbishment
The skeleton and grave goods will be part of the museum's exhibition entitled Roman York: Meet the People of the Empire

the Augustin company celebrated 33 years of organic cultivation on its own fruit farm in the heart of the Alte Land region
as well as the 25th anniversary of the marketing company Bio-Obst Augustin & Co
the new premises including sorting and packing station for organic pome fruit in Jork's industrial park 'Ostfeld' were also inaugurated
Co-managing director Hinrich Quast gave us a tour of the brand new hall together with Matthias Kinzel
project supervisor at machine supplier Palm Systems
With the move to the modern headquarters (total area: 3,500 m²)
the Augustin company was able to realize a considerable increase in capacity
The heart of the new premises is the highly automated sorting and packaging area covering a total of a good 1,500 m²
The other premises accommodate empties areas (400 m²) as well as cold storage and ULO areas (850 and 140 m² respectively) for stored goods
The ULO warehouse is divided into four rooms
The new location is completed with a total of 400 m² of office and staff space
Side by side: Matthias Kinzel (l) from neighboring company Palm Systems was on hand to provide Hinrich Quast with advice and support right from the start
"About 80 percent of our machine portfolio is used at this location," says Kinzel
His neighbor agrees: "Our Demeter apple expertise and Palm's technical know-how form the basis of this unique project."
The numbers and performance capacities of the new sorting and packaging equipment are all impressive
"We can sort up to twelve tons of apples per hour at peak times
as well as up to 2.5 tons of pears per hour
we have been able to increase our capacity to three to four tons per hour
We also have a separate packaging line for foodtainers with an integrated Sikafruit sealing machine from Silcoplan with a cycle rate of around 40 to 50 trays/minute," Quast calculates
Automation 2.0: From automatic crate emptying to state-of-the-art sorting and packaging technology
not only the appearance of the organic apple but also its inner values are checked several times
Sorted apples in the storage channels of the sorting machine
exclusively markets produce from a total of ten farms
The majority of the volumes will go directly to the German natural food trade
a small part is also exported to the Benelux countries and Scandinavia
"We were able to bring in a huge apple yield in the past growing year
we will normally succeed in catching up with the new crop," says Quast
Elstar and Topaz are expected to be sold out by the end of the month
will be available until the end of the season
The first half of the season in the fall was extremely slow from a marketing perspective
although prices should still be somewhat better in view of the considerable cost increases
We have had to accept about a doubling of storage costs
due to the increase in electricity prices and the expanded cooling capacities at the new location
which is cushioned to some extent by the photovoltaic system
We are observing that the classic organic buyer group is reorienting itself
which in turn is to the detriment of the natural food specialist trade."
The packaging area with three packaging lines
Separation area of the Elisam sorting machine with Ellips sorting software
Although the core competence of Augustin is still the preparation and marketing of organic apples
pears are also prepared for the natural food trade on a secondary basis
Deichperle and Xenia: the pome fruit of tomorrow? In the past decade
the variety of offerings has also increased rapidly in the organic apple sector
"The organic Deichperle variety has interesting growth potential
the total marketing volume is around 150 tons
The harvest volume of the scab-resistant variety Freya is around 150 to 200 tons
while Natyra is also gaining importance with around 250 tons."
with a total handling volume of 9,000 to 10,000 tons
have more of a supplementary character at Bio-Obst Augustin
we are aiming to increase our volume to 400 to 500 tons over the next five years
with a continued focus on Conference and Xenia
Xenia joins Conference's marketing window because of its good storability
making it particularly well suited for the second half of the season."

Sustainable and safe packaging solutions are currently a sensitive issue in the fruit and vegetable industry
including in the top fruit and citrus sectors
based in Jork - in the heart of the Altes Land growing region - has set itself the goal of providing the apple industry with a simple and robust packaging solution
Schematic representation of a banding machine as part of a complete packaging line
the modern technology of the banding systems of ATS-Tanner Banding AG was combined with the wing shells of A + P Service made of cardboard
whereby the apples are securely and firmly held together
The combined packaging solution with the sustainable bowls and banderols is already being used throughout Germany for various products
Banding 2.0The advantages of the banding machine are numerous: Among these is the ease of use and great performance
"This performance is particularly evident in the fully automated line
which has a capacity of up to 40 beats per minute
depending on the product and product feed A + P Service combines this banding machine with a cup dispenser designed for A + P wing shells and with a bowl filler for automatically filling the trays."
alignment and control of the filled punnets takes place before a feed belt transports them further for automatic tucking in of the banding machine
"The automatic infeed ensures continuous feeding of the banding machine
and when the punnet arrives at the banding machine
the band is first printed with the desired data
then placed around the filled wing shell and ultrasonically cold-welded." Subsequently
the removal takes place to a turntable or removal conveyor
With the integrated thermal transfer printer
data and layouts can be flexibly printed on the sleeve
such as Daily changing lot numbers and EAN codes or even your own logos
The systems can process both unprinted and printed PE banderols (layout controlled) and banderols made of kraft paper
The PE share of kraft paper band is less than 5%

Butler Hospitality is a new service in the New York hotel industry. Its founder is Premtim Gjonbaliç, a 27-year-old with Albanian parents.
His business, founded three years ago, is gaining fame for the innovation it has brought. Through several major restaurants in various locations in New York, the new service brings high-quality in-room dining to hotel guests and stands out for its efficiency and ease of communication.
Meet the young Premtim Gjonbaliç, or Tim as he is called. The business he founded allows hotels to improve customer care by easing the burden of in-room dining.
"I like hospitality. Considering the land we come from, we haven't had much to give to others, but we have had hospitality. The problem is how to transform this into a larger scale, and this encouraged me to think a lot", said Timi.
The Promise Company allows hotel guests throughout New York to order in-room dining with one click. It's something customers love. It's something new in the New York hotel industry.
Mine has set up offices in New York's Little Italy neighborhood:
"Here is the heart of immigration, so to speak. It's a sentimental part of the city for me. This is where my father got his first job and spent 15 years of his life," he added.
He proudly shows us his new car, a super expensive BMW that attracts the attention of passers-by.
Timi says he has big plans for the future.
"I am the sole founder of the company and I think I will stay where I am for at least a decade. In fact, we have a lot of work to do because our plans are not limited only within the United States, but also in other countries", said Timi.
Usually, successful firms are acquired by other larger companies of the same profile. Acquisitions are lucrative for founders of innovative firms, but Tim says his plan is to see his idea through.
"This is a passion for me, it's not something for a quick sale," he says.
His father's name is Elio Ahmetaj and he is from Vuthaj i Plavë-Gucia. We met him at his restaurant Allora on 47th Street.
"I have been in this business for 30 years. We work every day, seven days a week. It takes work", explained Timi.
"Like many other Albanian immigrants, my father came to America and did his best to give us the best education and upbringing. At first I helped him in some of the restaurants he had opened and after that we entered the hotel business. My father is quite good at this business. I helped him increase his customer base", Gjonbaliç added.
"He is a very disciplined, very wise boy. Surely all fathers think so. I believe that in the future there will be even more success", he emphasized.
Tim says he always wanted to be a doctor. When you are the son of immigrants, being a doctor is a big deal.
"When I started working with my father and we started building small businesses, I realized that I had started to really love this job. I was good at school, but not that I really liked it. I loved creating something new. So I made plans to study medicine. But I realized that my heart was not there," said the 27-year-old.
"If you take New York City, you will see that there are Albanians or Albanian businesses everywhere, and this shows that we have it in our blood to work hard, in every field, in construction, management, maintenance, restaurants. There is no field where we are not found", said Timi.
"I am extremely patriotic. I love my homeland and the culture we inherited and of course the people," he added.
"I was in Albania recently, we walked the entire coast and we really liked it; this has made us feel patriotism and connection with our people", he concluded./Zeriiamerica

Choeun Bunchork, better known as Admin Jing Jork, is a football commentator who also entertains sports fans with his talking talent. To become a football commentator, he says one must be good in English, be well aware of football rules and happenings, and have a talent for talking.

Rechica, Madjari Solidarnost and Nju Jork have won promotion after celebrating in the play-off and next season will take part in the group North of the Macedonian third league.
photo by Filip Zdraveski: moment of the last play-off Cementarnica 55 – Nju Jork
Since four teams were fighting for three places the format of the play-offs saw two play-off rounds. The winners of the first round would get immediately promoted, while the two losers would face each other for the last remaining spot.
The most entertaining was the first match played between Cementarnica 55 and Rechica. The Concrete Boys twice had the lead but the Serbs always managed to equalize with the last goal being scored four minutes from time after Cementarnica was left with 10 men. In the penalty-shoot-out Rechica keeper Nikola Strojanovikj managed to catch two shots and was the hero as his team won a third league promotion after eight long years.

Outsiders Nju Jork had a surprising lone goal lead on half-time over Madjari Solidarnost. However, after the break the Masons score three times turning the result around and claiming the promotion spot. Madjari gets back in the third level after only one season. They actually never got relegated, but due to interim disagreement they had to start over by preregistering the club after taking over the spot of their reserve team.
The three play-off winners will take over the spots of relegated teams Marino, Tekstilec and Gorno Lisiche.

An Australian TV viewer has sparked an investigation after they made an official complaint about a handful of PointsBet commercials featuring basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal and Australian comedic group The Inspired Unemployed.
The complainant to the the Ad Standards community panel said the advertisements discriminated and vilified Australians and portrayed them as stupid yobbos.
“I think it’s obvious that it’s a parody,” Jessie Weatherly, brand expert from Jork Consulting, said on 3AW Drive.
Press PLAY below to hear how the complaint may end in a ‘win’ for the gambling company
