a white coat at the start of medical school it marked an important milestone in her journey “I had to work very hard and overcome many challenges in order to reach my goal and be where I am today,” says Kahla who joined the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont in the fall of 2022 “Sometimes you’re unaware of how much you are capable of.” and enrolled at Damascus University in 2010 to study pharmacy “Witnessing the brutality of the war and how it took so much from people was very sad but seeing how physicians brought hope back to their patients during the tough time changed my perspective on life and I came to realize that satisfaction and joy stem from giving rather than taking,” she says “Physicians embodied the highest humanitarian values and never wavered in their mission to help This inspired me to gain the skills I needed to become a physician.” She left her home country and Damascus University in 2012 to move to Germany before relocating to Massachusetts where her grandparents and extended family resided Kahla saw the move to the United States as the perfect opportunity to pursue a pre-med track “I changed my path and started working on my goal to become a physician,” she says Accepted into UML’s biological sciences program for the fall of 2014 Kahla initially enrolled as a part-time student so she could adapt to the changes that come with moving to a different country including adjusting to a different educational system taught in English She appreciated the tutoring and office hours offered to students “There is more attention given to each individual,” says Kahla who continuously found herself on the dean’s list “It helped me with the transition tremendously.” Kahla took advantage of UML’s Pre-Health Advising which assists students on their journey to medical school by giving them guidance on what courses to take how to write personal statements and tips for medical school interviews Even after graduating from UMass Lowell, she continued to get medical school advice from Carol Myers UML’s director of pre-health programs and a biological sciences associate teaching professor “To have that support and feel someone is by your side makes all the difference,” Kahla says “Applying to medical school is a long and stressful process and the fact that UMass Lowell offers this advising to students and alumni is very important.” she worked at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen where she interned while a college student She then moved to Vermont and became a research assistant for an AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine study taking place at UVM Kahla is excited to dive into clinical rotations to explore different career opportunities She enjoys outpatient work that allows her to develop long-term relationships with patients and currently co-leads student interest groups at UVM in family medicine and dermatology “Some people told me that getting accepted into medical school was going to be hard for someone like me who did not grow up in the United States “I kept focusing on my goal and working toward it Nothing is impossible if you put the hard work in and believe in yourself “I hope one day I will be able to inspire others who are in similar situations to reach their dreams.” Map and DirectionsContact Us UMass System Terms of Use and Privacy Policy Accessibility Statement For an optimum web experience Australian history In fact he's been around so long in fact that you might be thinking what on earth could there be left to learn about Bob Katter Australian Story has had unprecedented access inside his political office and it turns out the answer is plenty (Katter's chief of staff bursts through the door of his Parliament office) Kahla Pike: You've got a 90 second statement today we've got to do it on the new beer can too Bob Katter: I'm not doing it on a beer can Kahla Pike: You've got to read it out CHIEF OF STAFF: I'm Bob's Chief of Staff and I've been his Chief of Staff for the last 3 years Kahla Pike: Your speech is on the can itself CHIEF OF STAFF: He makes me very stressed at times Kahla Pike: you need to start preparing now because we're going to run out of time DAUGHTER: My sisters and I have all worked for dad at some point or another Elise Nucifora: That doesn't seem very healthy Bob DAUGHTER: I remember ringing up my sister and said Elise Nucifora: He's having white bread CHIEF OF STAFF: Bob just does things differently to other politicians What other people would say is acceptable socially or politically he's willing to go out there and tap dance on that line every time Bob Katter: (In parliament Question Time) I'm a Martian astronaut Mr Acting Speaker ABC RADIO BRISBANE: He's like a nudist at a bishop's conference Bob Katter: (On zipline over croc) Yeeeehaaaa Bob Katter: They see you and they say that's lunch WIFE: The children have found it difficult having the Katter surname And they were so happy to get married and change their name FORMER PRIME MINISTER: When people simply ridicule him for being you know some Queensland hick Samantha Maiden: How did you get that through parliament security ANU: It would be remarkable if it all came down to Bob Katter's vote in terms of a minority government Bob Katter: (During protest) Don't speak over me ANU: The single vote of a figure like Katter Bob Katter: Every time I've opened my mouth Bob Katter: What a lot of journalists think is my peculiarities abnormalities are actually pretty desperate effort to get my message across AUSTRALIAN STORY PRODUCER: Will you ever quit ABC NATIONAL POLITICAL LEAD: I think both sides of politics are very aware that all the polls are suggesting we are headed for a hung parliament and that means members of the crossbench have enormous power in their hands to decide who is going to form government Peter Dutton would need Bob Katter to form a minority government Anthony Albanese would very much like to have Bob Katter to form a minority government That means Bob Katter is going to be in a pivotal position (Anthony Albanese announcing portrait of Bob Katter) Anthony Albanese: Bob Katter has been there for a long period of time And we've actually made a decision to give him a portrait in Parliament House (Looking at portraits hanging in Parliament House) Bob Katter: (Point to Bob Hawke portrait) A larrikin His nose is a bit red because he drank a bit ABC NATIONAL POLITICAL LEAD: When you look around this building They tend to all be former prime ministers I can't recall seeing too many portraits of long serving MPs Kahla Pike: (To Bob Katter) So what are people going to say when they see your portrait do you think Bob Katter: Oh a few of them might spit at it ABC NATIONAL POLITICAL LEAD: So this does look a little unique a Prime Minister who might be cosying up to a potential kingmaker if we're in a hung Parliament situation AUSTRALIAN STORY PRODUCER: Why does he deserve a portrait PRIME MINISTER: Because anyone who survives 50 years The average time in the House of Representatives was around about 5.6 years Bob Katter: (To man in pub) Bobby Katter mate CHIEF OF STAFF: Bob's electorate is two and a half times the size of Victoria I tallied up all of the distance he travelled just in Kennedy alone and it was enough to circumnavigate the globe twice Bob Katter: (To man at outdoor event) Bobby Katter mate ABC RADIO BRISBANE: People in North Queensland vote for Bob Katter because despite all his flaws he will actually do what he says he'll do You know fixing quite basic services because the natural environment is very harsh Bob Katter: (Walking along tracks with tradesmen) It's going to take another ten years and 60 million INDEPENDENT MP: He has just become bulletproof in his electorate because he fights for those people Bob Katter: (In pub) one's good for us INDEPENDENT MP: He comes from the days of the Country Party in Queensland He's lived through that whole era through to the modern time and so he is a true political fighter but also a true political survivor SISTER: The family story is that my grandfather Jidhi came from Lebanon when he was in his early teens He was Khalil Ignatious Mubarak Khattar Kairouz JOURNALIST & BIOGRAPHER: There's a lot of Labor blood in Katter's early upbringing Bob went to the meetings when he was a boy BOB KATTER: We organised and worked like dogs for the labour movement And later on got elected to Federal Parliament (Snippet of Bob's father on TV in 1984) Bob Katter Snr: What will be very costly reparation work will need Federal government assistance BOB KATTER: There were times when I had great hostility with my father very ill for the last 7 or 8 years of her life and there was no way she could be a wife or companion to my father who had one of the biggest electorates in Australia (Artist David Darcy drives past a Katter poster on the road to Katter's home.) ARTIST: I'm heading across to Charters Towers I've been commissioned by the Australian government to paint a portrait of Bob Katter I'm excited to see this larger-than-life character David Darcy: (Pointing to billboard) There he is (David arriving at Bob Katter's house) BOB KATTER: I just can't begin to tell you how uncomfortable Bob Katter: (Picking up a white Akubra) That's the hat I probably like wearing most Bob Katter: You put someone up on a pedestal that everyone's got to tear him down I felt like he had a thousand things going on in his head and I took him into the town and it was like he was in his element David Darcy: I felt a sense of relief because I went David: It's a silly movie about models Bob left the bush and went to the Big Smoke in Brisbane to Queensland University and started a law degree He just absorbed the uni larrikin student role and became famous when he and others egged The Beatles when they were mobbed by all the girls BOB KATTER: A bloke called Gary Williams kicked the door open and said BOB KATTER: So anyway we went and threw eggs at The Beatles And of course we were international news and I took it upon myself to do the interviews I said it was sort of a intellectual reaction against Beatlemania someone had to stand up." (Laughs) It sounded pretty good JOHN LENNON: I'd prefer to find out why they actually did it he was prominent in everything at university Susie you know she was pretty much the centre of the earth of Brisbane society at the time I would have been every mother's nightmare he will stray away from anything that makes him emotional SON: I know nothing about his mother because he can't talk about it without getting upset He can't do a speech or mention without getting upset So she obviously had a profound influence on his life BOB KATTER: Every single thing that I have done in my life could quite rightly be attributable to my mother and her influence She said we were supposed to look after poor people and she said we had to be good to other people SISTER: Mother had rheumatic fever as a child which there was no treatment for in those days BOB KATTER: She was told that she could never have children I said that she would never have been happy unless she was a mother DAUGHTER: She passed away when he was in his early 20s JOURNALIST AND BIOGRAPHER: He was worried that he disappointed his mother And his mother didn't live long enough to see Bob when he'd reinvented himself I don't think Bob Katter showed any inclination to jump into politics For a period he worked in the mines as an unskilled labourer and that's where he got involved with the unions BOB KATTER: I believe strongly that the working man needs strong representation but Whitlam got elected and my life changed immediately I don't really know why I hated him so much JOURNALIST AND BIOGRAPHER: Well then he did decide to run for the Queensland Parliament in the mid 70s He wanted to be in the conservative form of government that Joh Bjelke Petersen was running at the time JOH BJELKE PETERSEN: This again disgusts me very greatly from time to time FORMER PRIME MINISTER: My first observation of Bob was what I describe as Bob in full Joh mode He was a complete Bjelke Petersen loyalist Bob Katter (talking to the media in the 1970s): Every Australian should be offered a job Now if there's no jobs available in the particular town in which he's in then a job should be created by the government then I most certainly believe and I make no apologies for stating the fact that Bob Katter: I was one of the leadership contenders if you were looking to replace Joh So there was a lot of suspicion about me and um Bjelke Petersen put me into Aboriginal affairs and there was an attitude that was a good way to get rid of him (Archive news footage of Bob Katter from 1984) Bob Katter: I've spent two to three months of my life along with other people finding out what the Aboriginal people want and what they need FORMER PRIME MINISTER: Bob has always been very attentive to the rights and opportunities of Aboriginal Australians in a way which you never often found on the conservative side of politics; old fashioned Catholic Labor values BOB KATTER: I was a bit of a recalcitrant voice I wasn't going to toe the party line and just ARTIST: It's probably two and half months since I first met Bob I've shot about a thousand pictures and I got approval yesterday so today is the day that I start the big painting ARTIST: So I'm just putting up some frosting because I'm not allowed to let the public see this portrait until it's unveiled at Parliament House I've got about 8 weeks until the deadline (Archive Bob Katter's first day in Federal Parliament) National Party Leader: For the benefit of the media JOURNALIST AND BIOGRAPHER: Bob went into Federal Parliament mainly to take the fight down to Canberra where he could get more exposure on his perception that what a poor deal northern Australia and northern Queensland was getting from the feds (Bob Katter giving maiden speech in Federal Parliament) Bob Katter: Please ask yourself a question when was the last time you sat down and listened to a mob of blokes in a packing shed where you sat there for an hour and shut your mouth and listened JOURNALIST AND BIOGRAPHER: He became disillusioned with his own party Bob Katter: Obviously when I walk inside that parliament house JOURNALIST AND BIOGRAPHER: When the conservatives embraced globalisation He believed that They were betraying the interests of dairy farmers and cane farmers and other exporters Bob Katter: I've tendered my resignation from the parliamentary Federal National Party JOURNALIST AND BIOGRAPHER: That's when he made the decision to stand as an independent BOB KATTER: It felt like I'd grown wings I just hadn't realised what a burden I'd been carrying until I got out you're just about to go into the House Elise Nucifora: You're going to talk about housing Bob Katter: (Scanning notes) I'm just going to quote Robert Kennedy "some see the world as it is and say why" …um "we're removing all regulatory impositions because…" I've worked with him off and on for 15 years and and I say working for Bob was great training Elise Nucifora: It's a 90 second statement Bob Katter: You don't think I've got time to… PARLIAMENTARY CHIEF OF STAFF: It's completely and utterly exhausting Elise Nucifora: Don't go on about caveat emptor PARLIAMENTARY CHIEF OF STAFF: There's four of us and and we just can't keep up with him PARLIAMENTARY CHIEF OF STAFF: He just has got so much to achieve (Elise watches Bob on TV from the House of Reps) Bob Katter: …No regulatory impositions whatsoever at a cost of 150 or 200 thousand dollars to… Speaker of the House: Order… I'm hoping for a Christmas miracle HOUSE SPEAKER: In Question Time when Bob rises to his feet my heart starts racing because I'm equally terrified and excited about what he's going to say why don't you become a Federal government cut the Gordian knot and wreak Cannae-like destruction on power-drunk state and local government regulators HOUSE SPEAKER: And then I've got to decipher what was the question And luckily his staff speak Katter as well Bob Katter: Didn't pagan rituals sacrifice children to the tree and crocodile gods ABC RADIO BRISBANE: I would defy anyone in the House of Representatives to tell me clearly one question that Bob has actually asked TREASURER JIM CHALMERS: Thank you Mr Speaker and I thank my fellow Queenslander for the characteristically colourful question ABC RADIO BRISBANE: He doesn't actually ask a question like normal people He takes you on a journey of Bob's inner monologue Bob Katter: I risked my life flying in a harness only feet above a snapping four and a half metre crocodile WIFE: He's always been like that (laughing) honestly sometimes I could get the knife and stab him Reporter: (Speaking to Bob Katter) Today's same sex marriage result was a resounding yes across the country CHIEF OF STAFF: There are some issues like the same sex plebiscite that Bob was uncomfortable with people are entitled to the sexual proclivities let there be 1000 blossoms bloom as far as I'm concerned But I ain't spending any time on it because in the meantime every three months a person is torn to pieces by a crocodile in North Queensland I mean there's such a huge amount of information that I want to get across and sometimes it stumbles all over itself and comes out garbled AUSTRALIAN STORY PRODUCER: Might there be a medical explanation for that it would not surprise me at all if someone diagnosed him with something he can be singularly focused on that bridge or that road or this dam built or whatever it is he can be very difficult to live with in those periods because that's it I want half a kilo of it because it's it keeps him going (Tik Tok video of woman singing a song that sends up Bob's 'thousand blossoms bloom' speech)   I mean you know people are entitled to their sexual proclivities CHIEF OF STAFF: One of the things we've noticed is that he's got this new support out there with the early 20-year-olds and all the university students "Every 3 months a person is torn to pieces by a crocodile in North Queensland" CHIEF OF STAFF: It's predominantly TikTok and Instagram that have just exploded and given us a platform to be able to take his brand and propel it into this stratosphere (Bob surrounded by young people taking selfies at Parliament House)  Young Man 1: (Wearing Katter's hat) Oh my God Bob Katter: You blokes have all got big heads INDEPENDENT MP: He's not just a hit on TikTok INDEPENDENT MP: We went out to dinner once or twice SISTER: I can't understand why young people even bother following Bob on social media because I can only think that they would absolutely disagree with so much of what he says (Katter's production and design If a factory pollutes while making the product and it comes in a variety of sizes and colors Read her design Q&A to learn more about what makes a product truly sustainable – and how LK: According to the environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe we in Germany use 320,000 disposable mugs every hour Everyone is walking around with these mugs they are carried all across New York City and they appear in ads trying to sell a hip The disposable mug has become an icon of the modern life – but it creates a huge pile of rubbish we wanted to develop a porcelain to-go mug which motivates people to act in a sustainable and mindful way LK: Not only is the porcelain cup manufactured in Thuringia it is also tested for harmful substances and does not contain bone ash which makes it “vegan porcelain.” At KAHLA we use electricity generated by our own photovoltaic roof system and we conserve water by using our own well and water treatment system innovative technologies in the production process reduce carbon dioxide emissions The cupit lid is also locally produced in Thuringia transport distances to the points of sale are short which helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions cupit is designed for long-term use.  LK: We recycle the waste that is produced during the manufacturing of the porcelain cup and add it back into the production process Porcelain is very durable and therefore suited for a life-long use I omitted a groove or protrusion at the cup rim meant to hold the lid in place because the cup had to work also without a lid The cylindrical shapes of cups and lids ensure a tight fit of both materials The challenge now is the high precision of the cup which keeps our quality management team and the production team busy.  LK: When I was searching for materials in the beginning of the design process I thought about using bioplastics or biodegradable plastic materials As I researched this topic on the internet such as the environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe who provided me with valuable detailed information In the end I learned that there is a lot of “greenwashing” in this area With the waste management systems we have today biodegradable plastic materials don’t make sense and the production of bioplastics in some cases supports monocultures that are harmful for the environment My tip is to seek advice from institutions The response and outpouring from not only Bison Nation but the college athletics family has been extremely impressive.  In less than a week though cancer treatment often incurs costs in excess of $150,000 While many would expect current Bison coaches and friends of the family to provide assistance notes of generosity have flowed in from all over Bison Nation as well as the college athletics community as a whole.  NFL-ers Cody Mauch and Hunter Luepke made donations and Craig Bohl.  Donations also came in from players from years past like Chad Stark Gebhart is blown away by the level of support for his friends "I think the community of NDSU is one that is special to an extent that can’t be fully understood until you’re away from it Fargo will leave a special place in your heart whether you’re there for 1 year or 10 and even beyond have stepped up in this time of adversity…it just goes to show how powerful the Strength of The Herd really is." it would certainly appear that South Dakota State Head Coach Jimmy Rogers donated to the cause as well (though there certainly could be another Jimmy Rogers out there) If folks are looking to help out by booking a meal or donating directly, you can click this link here.  Anyone looking for CaringBridge updates can follow the link here. he will follow you anywhere and just wants attention San Remo and I have such a strong bond because I’ve spent a lot of time working with him not just in the ring We have a mutual trust and respect for each other.” In addition to her competitive achievements Kahla is increasingly in demand as a coach and trainer – a role she finds as gratifying as competing herself She enjoys working with a wide range of horses and riders and sharing the knowledge she’s gained over the years and seeing that moment when something clicks,” she says “I also like the challenge of tailoring the same basic training methods to suit each horse/rider combination Everyone learns differently and has a different style of riding it’s my job to ensure that they’re understanding what I’m teaching “I’ve been lucky enough to learn from some of the best from the very beginning When my mom was training with Willi Schultheis and Siegfried ‘Bimbo’ Peilicke in Germany watching her ride and listening to her lessons I travelled with my parents when they did clinics and watched them train their internationally-competitive horses.” “Everything I teach stems from the German classical system: systematic gymnastic training and the six steps of the training pyramid My overall goal is to ensure that both horse and rider understand the mechanics behind whatever it is that we are working on “I promote cross-training to my students and definitely follow my own advice It’s so important that riders go to the gym to not only improve their own fitness and that conditioning is extremely important but rather develop through a consistent training program I have high expectations and want to push people beyond what they think they are capable of “I’ve had students who just want to learn how to do ‘tricks.’ What I try to educate them about is that a canter pirouette uses the same aids as a properly-ridden twenty-metre circle just at a much higher level of strength and balance.” While Kahla’s training philosophy certainly comes from her legendary parents it’s not the only gift they have given her “I think one of the most important things that my mom has passed on to me is her work ethic One of her favourite sayings is ‘If you want the ribbons you need to put in the work.’ She pushes me outside of my comfort zone and emphasizes that you need to be passionate about what you do He was quick to greet people with a loud ‘hello’ and a firm He had an unmatched ability to teach piaffe and passage and always had fun doing it I think that’s what he taught me; to have fun with my riding but make sure that I have fun on the journey.” An average day sees Kahla riding at 6:30 a.m before spending the day at her job with the Ministry of the Attorney General After work she hits the gym to work on fitness and strength and then it’s back to the barn to teach her clients in the evenings “I’m extremely lucky that my husband is so supportive so he understands long hours and late nights,” she explains “We are still working on finding a balance but we support each other in our respective goals I’m also grateful to have wonderful students who understand when I have to push back lessons because I got stuck at work It really does take a village to make everything work!” With so much on her plate and a last name that’s akin to dressage royalty in Canada it’s fair to wonder whether Kahla feels added pressure to succeed I think that it’s both external and internal pressure I don’t want to disappoint my mom or myself She has high expectations and is a perfectionist Those are the qualities that got her to where she is today and qualities that she has passed on to me When I come out of the competition ring she is always supportive and positive but is quick to point out what needs to be improved I always want to know what I can do better She always knows how far to push me to be a better rider and competitor Sometimes it’s not always what I want to hear “My dad used to say that when it came to competing People would either say ‘Of course she’s doing well; look who her parents are’ or ‘Why isn’t she doing well Look who her parents are.’ I think that at the end of the day For over 50 years Horse Sport has been the voice of equestrian competition in Canada and breeders who are highly involved in the equine marketplace Developed by The Web Developer LLC AMARA - The 180 megawatt Al-Kahla power station in southern Missan province is running on associated gas for the first time, due to the completion of an associated gas capture and pipeline project at the Halfaya oil field.
