The Red Devils are looking to get promoted to the Bundesliga
with three matches remaining in the season
As always expressed by ex-coach Markus Anfang
the season goal was to improve play and have a campaign without demotion fears
But with Anfang now gone and a win under new coach Torsten Lieberknecht’s belt
FC Kaiserslautern changed its season goal — promotion to the top flight of German soccer
FCK next step toward that goal is a 1:30 p.m
The Red Devils are in seventh place with 49 points
one point behind third-place Magdeburg and four behind Hamburg in second
Third place qualifies for two playoff games against the Bundesliga’s 16th place team
Second place would be direct promotion to the Bundesliga
but Kaiserslautern has the worst goal difference of the pack
A KSC win would put them in contention for promotion
Lieberknecht’s bench last week looked different
with a bunch of players substituted in that saw little or no action under Anfang
it will be interesting to see who is in the lineup Sunday
Around 3,500 supporters will be at Wildpark Stadium to cheer the Red Devils on
The final game of the season is in Cologne at 3:30 p.m
The away contingent for the match sold out in minutes
there were 100,000 requests to be part of the team’s limited contingent
That’s more than for the Red Devils’ German cup final last year
FC Kaiserslautern came back twice from behind Sunday
but the 2-2 tie in Karlsruhe did not get the Red Devils any closer to third place and a promotion to the Bundesliga
FCK coach Torsten Lieberknecht sent the same starters onto the pitch as last weekend against Schalke
And Kaiserslautern had the first good scoring chance of the game in the seventh minute when Ragnar Ache reacted quickly on a loose ball
but Karlsruhe keeper Max Weiss made the stop
Karlsruhe took the lead three minutes later when Louey Ben Farhat converted a corner kick past Julian Krahl
The Red Devils evened the score in the 31st minute
Jan Elvedi connected with Marlon Ritter’s kick with his left foot from about six yards out
Both teams had scoring chances before and after the intermission
But a lapse in the Kaiserslautern defense in the 58th minute left Sebastian Jung free to put KSC back in the lead
It only took the Red Devils six minutes to get back in the game
Daniel Hanslik headed a cross from Jannis Heuer past Weiss into the Karlsruhe net for the 2-2
The deadlock left the Red Devils in seventh place with 50 points; Karlsruhe dropped to nineth
The big winners in the race to the Bundesliga were Hamburg
returning to first place after a win in Darmstadt
FCK’s neighbor to the west climbed into third place with 52 points
which fell from third to fifth after losing at home to lowly Münster
The second division standings are still tight
Cologne is three points ahead of Elversberg
Paderborn is in fourth also with 52 points
Hannover and Karlsruhe are theoretically still in the running for third place and the relegation series against Bundesliga’s 16th place team
Next up for the Red Devils is their final home game of the season on Sunday
a must-win match against Darmstadt 98 at 1:30 p.m
The final game of the season is May 18 in Cologne
a match that could be decisive for both teams

FC Kaiserslautern beat Schalke 04 2-1 on Sunday
in their first game under new coach Torsten Lieberknecht
keeping the Red Devils in contention for a Bundesliga promotion
Following three straight losses and the firing of coach Markus Anfang on Tuesday
FCK was under pressure to get back in the win column to keep its promotion chances alive
when all their competitors for third place and playoff games against the Bundesliga’s 16th placed team tied
and on Sunday league leaders Cologne and Hamburg lost
leaving Kaiserslautern the chance to make good
Daisuke Yokota scored in the 35th minute putting the Red Devils in the lead
Schalke’s Moussa Sylla equalized the score in the 61st minute
But in the 77th minute Ragnar Ache scored his 17th goal of the season off a pass from Marlon Ritter
The victory leaves the Red Devils in seventh place but tightens the already tight second division standings
In the race for third place and the relegation games
Cologne and Hamburg’s weekend losses leave them in the direct promotion spots
but only four and three points ahead of Magdeburg
Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to Karlsruhe
which with 47 points is still in the racecontention for third place

Germany – The atmosphere around the Kaiserslautern softball team couldn’t be any rosier
the Raiders began the season with four consecutive losses before spring break
including a doubleheader sweep over Wiesbaden at Kaiserslautern High School on Saturday
The 27-12 and 19-4 wins pushed Kaiserslautern (6-4
6-4) above .500 for the first time this season
“Everybody’s hyped right now,” Kaiserslautern coach Natasha Riggins said
“We saw what our issues were at the beginning
and we worked toward those weaknesses and got stronger and got more confident and believing in ourselves and knowing we can do it.”
That belief was evident early in the early game
which looked more like the start of the season than the winning streak
0-8) erupted at the plate in the top of the first inning
including pitcher Valerie Fisher’s two-RBI double that made it 7-0 to the away team
they amassed 19 runs – eight in the first and 11 in the second – to take a 19-9 advantage
“We just stayed positive,” Kaiserslautern senior Giada Talyor said of the early deficit
“We knew our offense was strong enough to get back up
The catcher went 4 for 5 with a pair of triples and seven runs batted in
The first three-bagger came during her second at-bat in the bottom of the first inning
she smashed an 0-2 pitch along the third-base line
Taylor got thrown out at home plate trying to stretch that triple into a home run
In her next plate appearance the following inning
Taylor launched a 1-1 pitch into left field to drive in teammates Kennedy Donahue and Ornella Taylor
Giada Tayor drove in those same two players in the fourth inning with a single into left field to cap off the big game
The senior catcher slowed up in the later game
but she made her presence known with a two-run single in the second inning
I just got up there and wanted to hit the ball,” Taylor said of her approach
especially because she suffered an injury Saturday
Yet the catcher declined to be pulled in the last inning of the afternoon contest when the Kaiserslautern coaches called a timeout
‘Do we need to put somebody else in?’ She said no,” Riggins said
‘I may be not so strong outside of the game
the Warriors outhit the Raiders 18-11 over the two games
Fisher produced two extra-base hits with a triple in the first inning of the late game to go with the double in the opening contest
Senior Kyra Cole went 3 for 3 in the first game
were struggles on both ends of the battery
Wiesbaden pitchers recorded more walks (23) and hit batters (12) than they allowed Kaiserslautern hits
And passed balls allowed the Raiders to move along the basepaths easily
“(Our girls) attacked them at the plate today,” Wiesbaden assistant coach Raquel Riley said
and that’s what we’ve been coaching them for the past couple of weeks
so it was really great to see their sticks come alive
“If we didn’t have all the passed balls at the plate
it would have been a lot more of a competition today.”
Kaiserslautern is looking to get back to the Division I title game during next month’s DODEA European tournament
Taylor said every game is about taking steps forward
and that’s what the team has done over the past three weekends
but we’re out here to win the championship,” Taylor said

In the middle of what is shaping up to be an incredibly tight promotion race in the 2
FC Kaiserslautern is also making strides to grow in the US market
just two points below the promotion playoff line
Lautern is poised to return to the Bundesliga
also help with the club’s US growth potential
the club has launched several exciting grassroots initiatives in the United States to grow the Kaiserslautern’s profile overseas
The club also hosts training sessions for American kids via Zoom almost weekly
Former Lautern greats Roger Lutz and Florian Fromlowitz participate in those sessions
and over 100 children participate in the program in Washington alone
Although Durm had his best time at Borussia Dortmund
the now 32-year-old grew up a Kaiserslautern fan and ultimately ended his career at the club
the goal is always to grow Lautern’s presence in the United States and get kids attached to German football
But the decision-makers at Lautern very much underline that this is also about sustainable growth
“The US market is very competitive,” Lautern’s head of club communication
“Many clubs are fighting for attention over there
and ultimately it isn’t just about growing our club but to push the Bundesliga overall.”

Then there is the US Air Force base in Ramstein
Located less than 20 kilometres from Kaiserslautern’s city center
the US military presence has helped make Die Roten Teufel (Red Devils) one of the more popular German teams in the United States despite not having played first division football since the 2011/12 season
The decision-makers at Kaiserslautern are very much aware of the asset the military base presents in their efforts to grow the club’s brand in the United States
“We have always tried to get Americans living here to visit the stadium,” Roßkopf said
“But lately we have certainly felt that there has been an upswing in visitors from the base.”

once again has one of the best atmospheres in German football
While the Betze was one of the most feared stadiums for opponents in the 1990s
the stadium atmosphere also experienced a low point when the club struggled in Germany’s lower divisions in the 2010s
the atmosphere has returned to be one of the best in Germany
and Americans living in the region have taken note
How do you teach kids that Betzenberg feeling
If you never experienced Betzenberg before it’s almost impossible to understand
the force and the emotions coming from the stands
Experiencing the emotional sides of the club is the most crucial part for Schächter, who counts several German clubs among his clients. “The emotional aspects, the feeling of the stadium and the club, that’s an important part,” Schächter said. “Having people experience this is an important part of the project.”
While the growth of the club’s brand certainly is the biggest priority, it certainly feels like Kaiserslautern has found a niche to grow sustainably in the US market. “It is all about long-term goals rather than short-term gains,” Schächter concludes.

Ordnance disposal experts Tuesday morning defused and removed a World War II explosive found near the tracks at Kaiserslautern’s main train station earlier in the day.
The station and lines into Kaiserslautern were closed after the explosive was found during excavation work at around 2 a.m. Tuesday, Deutsche Bahn said in a statement.
German media reports have alternately referred to the explosive as both a mortar and a grenade. Federal police called the explosive a grenade in an X social media post.
The station has reopened but delays for regional and S-Bahn trains are expected for the rest of the day. Bus services at the station have not been affected.
The Edeka grocery store in the Pfalz Center in Kaiserslautern is slated to close Saturday, several local German news organizations reported this week.
The closure was announced suddenly, SWR reported, noting that some employees found out Monday evening after coming across an online clearance advertisement.
The store’s 70 employees were officially told Tuesday, according to SWR, attributing the closure to failed negotiations with the building’s owner on desired renovations.
Though there’s no official closure announcement on the store’s website, a flier declaring “everything must go” announced discounts ranging from 20% to 40% storewide through Saturday.
On Thursday, the Pfalz Center parking lot was nearly full around noon, and Edeka was teeming with customers filling up multiple grocery carts.
Repeated calls to the store Friday evening went unanswered.
The Night of the Witches is upon us. Prepare for pranks and mischief on Wednesday night, the eve of Germany’s May 1 Labor Day holiday.
Traditional antics include toilet papering cars, egging mailboxes and ringing doorbells in the middle of the night. In past Witches Nights, police have reported the removal of drain covers on the streets and ruckuses involving alcohol.
Witches Night is known as Walpurgis Night, when it is believed that witches came together to celebrate the arrival of spring.
The Red Devils are in Braunschweig on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game against Eintracht. It is the 30th week of the season, leaving the team five games to grab third place and the chance to qualify for a playoff to the Bundesliga.
Coming off two straight losses, 1. FC Kaiserslautern is in sixth place, with 46 points, one point behind third-place Elversberg. Between the two are Düsseldorf and Magdeburg.
Paderborn, Nuremberg, Hannover, and Karlsruhe are right behind FCK, but still in striking distance for third place. At the moment, Hamburg and Cologne lead the second division, five and four points ahead of Elversberg, respectively.
Eintracht is on the other end of the scale, in 15th place, trying to stay above the relegation line to the third division. But the team’s last two games can give them hope as they beat Paderborn and Hamburg. So, Kaiserslautern should be warned that in Bundesliga 2, position in the standings is not an indicator who will win.
One thing is clear, the Red Devils need to convert their scoring possibilities, unlike last weekend against Nuremberg, where they had 12 shots on target, but only scored on a penalty.

Germany — The Ramstein and Kaiserslautern soccer teams could have let the off-the-field drama affect them
Yet when they stepped onto the field Thursday afternoon at Kaiserslautern High School
all four teams shut out the noise a mere 21 hours after DODEA-Europe announced a pause in all student extracurricular activities
DODEA administrators since have walked back that declaration somewhat to allow some sporting events on the scheduled opening weekend of the spring season
The Royals and Raiders got a sense of normalcy with their season openers
Ramstein swept both matches with the boys winning 3-0 and the girls squeaking out a 1-0 victory
“We just focused on this game,” Ramstein boys senior striker Joseph Yost said
“We ignored what’s happening after that because we can’t change that
The matches were the culmination of two weeks of practice
And the players and coaches were happy to show off their work Thursday
and we’re just ready to play,” Ramstein girls left winger Kayla Groat said
Groat received a ball that teammate Claire Boynton dribbled from the right wing to the top left side of the box
Groat saw she had a shot and decided to take a whack at it
I wanted to help my team win and I just wanted to get it in the goal,” Groat said
“I could kind of tell it was going in (when I hit it).”
The sophomore’s goal that flew over Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Jada Hollis proved to be the difference
as nobody else found the back of the net Thursday
it seemed as though the match was destined for a goalless draw
scoring opportunities were scarce with just one shot on goal from either team
Ramstein and Kaiserslautern got into dangerous situations
like when Raider captain Georgia Rawcliffe found herself behind the Royal defense in the 52nd minute
Ramstein freshman midfielder Reese Monson ended up with the ball deep in the box after it had pinballed off a corner
just for the shot to hit the post and bounce out for a goal kick
Those were just some of the few heart-stopping moments late in the contest
“It was a pretty intense game,” Ramstein senior Kyndra Brown said
“I’m really proud of the way the team played
I’m excited to see how much better we’ll be by Euros.”
Brown kept her team in the match during one of the better chances in the 66th minute
whom Kaiserslautern coach Maggie Phillips called one of the best her team has seen in some time
left the net wide open when she tried to beat a Raider to a through ball
It eventually ended up with Rawcliffe who lobbed a shot from distance on goal
Brown recovered and cleared the ball off the line
Phillips said if Rawcliffe had fired just a second sooner
her shot would have found the back of the net
she said she cannot complain about her team’s performance
The Raiders held their own against the Division I champions
which validated their title aspirations in their coach’s eyes
“I plan on this being the championship match and it going the other way around,” Phillips said
Ramstein had early control of its match against Kaiserslautern but nothing to show for it
Keiran Goodall launched a free kick from the right wing into the box
who thumped the ball for the season’s first goal
Coach Dominik Ludes couldn’t have been more thrilled with the start and not just because it sparked a comfortable win for the Royals
“We’ve been practicing set plays the last couple practices,” he said
“It’s something really nice when you work on that in training and it actually happens in the game.”
The victory started Ramstein’s title defense on the right note
but Yost declared his belief that the team will be near the top of Division I come late May
“We feel our team is stronger this year than it was last year,” Yost said
“We challenge any team to bring a fight to us
The Royals doubled their lead 16 minutes later through Nathan Rachamim
The former Kaiserslautern player picked up the ball outside the box
juked a defender to create space and fired a shot that despite hitting Raider goalkeeper Finn Derby’s gloves bounced over the line
Goodall then sealed the victory with a goal in the 49th minute
Rachamim said he found it interesting being on the opposite side of one of DODEA-Europe’s fiercest rivalries
but I’m always down to embrace challenge,” he said
Although the visitors eventually broke through
they struggled against Kaiserslautern’s high defensive line for much of the match
The Royals were whistled for offside nine times
Ludes didn’t seem concerned about his players not being able to hold off their runs on through balls
“Timing on those plays is critical,” he said
it’s absolutely normal that the timing isn’t there
The Raiders eventually grew into the match and started to get more possession over the final 25 minutes
but he also said his team can produce more offensively
and I think this game was a learning experience for what we need to do better for the upcoming games.”
I wasn’t even sure I was in the right place
ducked around scaffolding and stepped into what looked like a retro deli
no signs — just a few tables and the hum of a kitchen
The lunch and dinner experiences are different at Vicino
says the long-time Kaiserslautern resident and colleague who directed me here
calling it the best Italian food for miles — and it isn’t close
I’ll offer you two different points of view on Vicino
I’m the first-timer who doesn’t normally seek out anything upscale
I’ll also share what a colleague who has eaten his way through Italy and says things like “amuse-bouche” without irony had to say through five visits
The front room of Vicino is tiny — the tables are tucked in near shelves of limoncello and wine
Around the corner is a larger dinner dining area
which combines modern accents with the industrial chic of the old butcher shop
Vicino felt more like a tucked-away neighborhood café than a full-service restaurant
I sat down to a basket of bread with a dollop of whipped ricotta
It was topped with a delicate parmesan crisp and a sprinkle of fresh chives — a small bite
When that artfully plated dish landed in front of me
I began to wonder if I was out of my depth
But what I’d find throughout the meal were familiar dishes with unexpected yet accessible flavor
Instagram-worthy plating with a touch of theater
I had come with the intention of trying the restaurant’s handmade pasta
but the creatively conceived menu convinced me to veer off course
“You should have tried the pasta,” he said
“There are a few places here that make good-enough pasta
but this was the first and only place where I had one bite and thought
The pasta varieties and accompaniments change often and may include wild boar sausage
scallops or even a less adventurous but well-executed meat sauce
I opted for a starter and one of the daily specials
a gift from the kitchen was placed in front of me
something between panna cotta and fresh cheese
topped with three delicate dots of homemade mayonnaise and crisped potato bits
A server appeared with an iron teapot and poured in a red beet broth that circled the disk like watercolor
And I’d ordered another soup as my actual starter
The next dish was served the same way: the core plated first and the broth poured tableside
A smooth puree surrounding a crisped piece of white fish topped with three more piped dots of sauce
This soup was darker and deeper than the first
and the dots of sauce had the faintest touch of wasabi
but just enough for me to pause and consider what exactly I was tasting
Each dish arrived with edible garnishes shaped like little leaves or twigs
My silverware was swapped out between courses without a word or even a noticeable gesture
cooked medium and topped with shaved truffles
It was garnished with a creamy white sauce and a brown jus
finished with three spears of asparagus and served alongside a potato mille-feuille — crisp on the outside
layered with cheese and more truffle on top
but a steak done exactly as you want it is easy to recognize
Skip says this matched up with his impressions of lunchtime
which in some ways he preferred over dinner
“Fewer tables means better service,” he said
Skip added that the wine offerings by the glass are better than most restaurants and that the staff knows how to pair them to what you’re eating
you may really want to eat al fresco if too many flies from the street come through the open door
Skip added that one of his dinners had friendly but very slow service
The Italian expectation of multiple courses and lots of conversation doesn’t always hold in Germany
The food struck a balance between creativity and comfort
You don’t need a refined palate to enjoy it — just an open mind and a healthy appetite
Monday through Friday and 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m
6-9 p.m.; reservations strongly recommended
Prices: Lunch entrees between 15-22 euros per person

| Screenshot/YouTube/Now The End BeginsFans of a German soccer club known for their “Red Devils” mascot shocked spectators with a choreographed display invoking Satan
featuring Latin banners and a giant devil-like figure
has long embraced its “Red Devils” nickname
a nod to the team’s fierce playing style and red-and-white colors
The nickname’s origins trace back to the club’s early years
reflecting the region’s industrial grit and the team’s competitive spirit in German football
During a March 29 match against Fortuna Düsseldorf at the Fritz Walter Stadium in the German city of Kaiserslautern
supporters unveiled a massive red pentagram formed in the crowd
Sume Animas Nostras,” translating to “Hear us
rise from the abyss and accept our souls.”
a towering devilish figure emerged from the pentagram
seemingly an extension of the club’s devil-themed identity
Surge ex Flammis et Appare,” meaning “Draw us to the light
The team defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-1. Kaiserslautern coach Markus Anfang was quoted by the Catholic News Agency as calling the display a “goosebump moment,” adding
“It was simply fun to be here in this stadium today.”
The display has sparked widespread controversy and fueled debates about whether the display was a provocative nod to the club’s mascot or an inappropriate invocation of satanic themes in a sports setting
The performance drew sharp criticism on the Taylor Marshall podcast
where the former Episcopal church priest expressed exhaustion with covering satanic incidents
seems like you got Luciferian satanic stuff happening every single day
Marshall called the display a “satanic liturgy” and highlighted its Latin inscriptions
Satan’s kind of cool.’ This is calling out
invoking Lucifer from the abyss and saying
‘Take our souls.’ This is really sinful.” He tied the display to the team’s mascot
let’s actually bring out the red devil Lucifer.’”
Marshall also remarked on the cultural context
… Satan is mocking Catholicism.” He questioned Germany’s role in such displays
… If you ever caught the devil by his ankle and turned it over

home to more than 50,000 American service members
It likely would have shocked the American platoon sergeant who led troops into the city
Byron Hoover told Stars and Stripes in March 1945
reflecting the desire to push further into Germany
“Who wants to be mayor of Kaiserslautern?”
troops entered the city as part of Operation Undertone
an assault to clear the Saar-Palatinate region and establish bridgeheads over the Rhine River between Mainz and Mannheim
Capturing Kaiserslautern was an early objective for Allied forces
Hitler’s men were ordered to hold on to it at all costs
forces of the Ludendorff Bridge in Remagen
allowed a rapid advance into central Germany
The success of Operation Undertone reduced Kaiserslautern’s strategic value
German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring had already ordered a general retreat to the Rhine
The Allies on the city’s doorstep found a remnant of German soldiers low on morale
head of the Palatine history department at the Kaiserslautern-based Institute for Palatine History and Ethnology
the last resort of the regime was young boys and old men
American soldiers are said to have raced down the autobahn in their military vehicles to see who could arrive in Kaiserslautern first
Soldiers with the 10th Armored Division carried on in their M4 Sherman tanks toward the Rhine
while about 10,000 soldiers from the 80th Infantry Division occupied the city
The Americans kept about 100 German soldiers as prisoners of war in the city’s Fruchthalle
several hundred women and children huddled together and wept noisily
But among the sadness and fear of the unknown
adding that the surrender prevented more death and destruction
Bombing campaigns the previous year destroyed about 60% of the city
There were reports that some 200 bombers were on standby in Metz
to bomb Kaiserslautern if there was resistance
forces remained in the city until July 1945
when they handed it over to their French counterparts
Residents had reportedly resorted to eating horses that had died from starvation
The arrival of the French was an extra burden as they had few resources of their own and Kaiserslautern’s population had to feed the occupiers
The winter of 1946-47 was particularly harsh
with even milk for small children strictly rationed
Kaiserslautern’s fortunes changed for the better
the Soviet Union attempted to cut off access to West Berlin in what became known as the Berlin Blockade
to take over more than two dozen military bases in Kaiserslautern and the surrounding area
“The return of the Americans was received positively,” local historian Jürgen Keddigkeit said
Construction boomed to house the influx of troops and others who moved to the area for economic opportunities
including Ramstein Air Base — which began construction in 1952 — were built or refurbished
“It was incredible how many dollars were invested into this region during the early 1950s,” said Michael Geib
a historian and former director of the Docu Center Ramstein
and the German community was very much impressed.”
A common expression among Germans in the area at the time was
“Are we keeping a pig or an American?” Geib said
highlighting the choice people had between having livestock or earning money from housing an American on their property
military was the third-largest employer in the area
Another reason for the swift shift in sentiment was the promotion of American culture and values
The Amerikahaus in downtown Kaiserslautern offered books
films and sessions where jazz and rock ‘n’ roll records were played
The center also had a bus that traveled through rural areas
the younger generation visited American service member clubs
where “they drank cocktails and whiskey and smoked Lucky Strikes,” enhancing trust and camaraderie
policies also occurred near Ramstein over the years
historians note that there were never major calls by area residents for the U.S
West German President Richard von Weizsäcker said the day Germany surrendered and ended World War II in Europe should be seen as a “day of liberation” for Germany
Despite the camaraderie that has grown over the years
the day the Americans entered Kaiserslautern is rarely portrayed that way
The city will not hold any commemorations to mark the anniversary this year
troops stationed there marched through Baumholder’s streets with its mayor to celebrate 80 years since the Americans arrived
Residents watched from their windows and waved American and German flags as the soldiers passed by
“This is another example of how close the relations are here,” Bernd Mai
The Nazi regime built the barracks at Baumholder ahead of World War II
and the military and civilian communities are closely integrated
I could never think of this space being without Americans,” Mai said of Baumholder’s Smith Barracks
recent comments from Washington have led to questions about the future of the U.S
including in the Kaiserslautern Military Community
which sometimes includes Baumholder depending on who is defining it
Baumholder is in the middle of a $500 million expansion to host Special Forces and support units in the coming years
commander of the Army’s 16th Sustainment Brigade
spoke at a ceremony following Tuesday’s parade
“What is as clear as the weather today is that the U.S
the relationship we have with the people,” Alexander said on a rare sunny March morning
“There is always a little fear that the U.S
“Not only because of the economic factor but because of the friendship with the U.S
and we want to keep them as long as we can.”

Residents are being directed to a shelter at Goetheschule
where the German Red Cross will be providing assistance
Deutsche Bahn railways is suspending rail traffic in the area starting at 10 p.m

Kaiserslautern is home to the largest overseas U.S
military installations including Pulaski Barracks
Kapaun Air Station and Rhine Ordnance Barracks are near the site of the find
This marks the second such discovery in the Pfaff district in recent memory
a similar WWII bomb was found at the site of the former Opel factory during construction of an electric vehicle battery plant
The Red Devils will be out for a little revenge Friday evening when they host SV Elversberg at Fritz Walter Stadium
Elversberg beat Kaiserslautern 1-0 in their first meeting this season and are only three points behind the Betzenberg boys in the standings
The teams’ stadiums are only about 35 miles apart
but a big rivalry has yet to grow between the clubs
seeing this is only the second year in Bundesliga 2 for the team from the Saarland
Elversberg has won two of the three games they have played
FC Kaiserslautern goes into the game in second place
tied on points with league leader Hamburger SV
Paderborn and Cologne are one point behind the duo
FCK keeper Julian Krahl is probably out with hip problems
newcomer Simon Simoni will get his first start for the Red Devils
There are also question marks behind Daisuke Yokota and Jan Gymerah
Yokota is hampered by a foot laceration and Gymerah has back and thigh problems
This is the fourth time this season that the Red Devils had a chance to jump to the top of the standings
They did not make it on their first three tries
But Kaiserslautern will have all the fan support they need
The Red Devils have two tough games coming up
they travel to Paderborn for a March 15 match and then host Düsseldorf on March 29 at Fritz Walter Stadium
The woman is charged with bodily harm resulting in death after a June 29
altercation in which she stabbed a 64-year-old man who grabbed her buttocks
The incident was captured on security cameras
who was born in Germany and is an American citizen
The case is being heard in Kaiserslautern Regional Court
the accused stabbed a 64-year-old man during an altercation resulting from the man grabbing the woman’s buttocks
the 20-year-old pulled out a folding knife and pursued the victim as he backed away
she freed herself and she stabbed the man once
The prosecutor’s office agrees with the woman’s claim that she didn’t intentionally aim for the victim’s heart
“The charge of bodily harm resulting in death requires intent only with regard to the bodily harm and (only) negligence with regard to the death,” according to Monday’s statement

Kaiserslautern is asking residents and business owners to weigh in on a potential tax targeting single-use food packaging
The proposed tax would apply to items like takeaway coffee cups and burger wrappers
Businesses would be responsible for the cost
which could lead to higher prices for customers
Leaving room for dessert is often easier said than done in and around Kaiserslautern
where schnitzels are the size of dinner plates and single servings of käsespätzle can feed a small family
some desserts at area restaurants are worth saving space for — or even skipping straight to
Here are five standout offerings I discovered that should satisfy your sweet tooth
Last month marked six years since Restaurant 11A opened in the upscale Saks Urban Design Hotel in Kaiserslautern’s Stiftsplatz
The restaurant’s Cafe Gourmand is a selection of several small desserts served together with an espresso
It pairs well with the vanilla sauce that decorates the plate
with a mild sweetness accentuated by an even sweeter strawberry topping
Each spoonful nearly dissolves in the mouth
The egg white cream with passion fruit is fresh and light
while the simple combination of mandarin orange and mint serves as a palate cleanser
The Cafe Gourmand is a good choice for those who can’t decide on one dessert
or just like to indulge in a bit of everything
Warm crepe with vanilla ice cream and plum at Julien
Julien is Kaiserslautern’s best-known French restaurant
but the staff recommended the chocolate mousse
featuring a dash of chocolate and fruit garnishes
I tasted the mousse first and immediately understood the recommendation
even more pronounced than the mousse at Restaurant 11A
The two boules of chocolate mousse sat in a sweet mango jus
The dish was excellent and I’d order it again
But if I had to choose between the mousse and the crepe
The slightly tangy plum filling gave the crepe a sophisticated touch
with a light crunch from a sprinkling of almond pieces
Thin slices of apple and a cloud-like whipped cream complemented the flavor and texture; and the scoop of vanilla ice cream completed it all
which opened last summer across from the Fruchthalle and specializes in vegan cakes and coffee
The restaurant’s most popular dessert is the Lotus cake
and it’s easy to see why it routinely sells out
It’s made with the Lotus Biscoff brand of speculoos
cloves and ginger that is popular in Germany
airy sponge cake and a rich spread made of Lotus cookie bits
but because the Lotus cake isn’t overpoweringly sweet
New cakes are baked fresh daily and slices that are more than a day old are sold at discounted prices
Warm chili chocolate cake at Restaurant 21
Located on the 21st floor of Kaiserslautern City Hall
Restaurant 21 bills itself as a fusion restaurant
The warm chili chocolate cake contains peppers
but a subtle aftertaste lingered afterward
The cake is topped with a runny chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries
paired with vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel
while kiwi and blueberries provide an occasional tangy contrast
the combination of chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream is the best part
Warm apple strudel with vanilla sauce and cream at Spinnrädl
housed in Kaiserslautern’s oldest surviving half-timbered building
is a great place to indulge in apple strudel
a beloved staple of German dessert culture despite its Austrian origins
flaky crust giving way to a soft center filled with tender
A generous serving of rich vanilla sauce pools around the strudel
Spinnrädl’s strudel is both comforting and indulgent
Look no further for what to do this coming weekend

The Red Devils are heading to the German capital this weekend for the second division’s Saturday night game against Hertha BSC Berlin
About 6,000 fans are headed in the same direction to support their team at the match that kicks off at 8:30 p.m
There was a flurry of transaction last weekend before the winter transfer window closed
FC Kaiserslautern picked up Tim Breithaupt on loan for the rest of the season from first division FC Augsburg and sent both Richmond Tachie to Braunschweig and Dickson Abiama to 1860 Munich on loan to the end of the season
comes to FCK as a veteran of 18 Bundesliga and 57 Bundesliga 2 games
Hertha comes into Saturday’s match in 12th place
FC Cologne leads the second division with 37 points
The Red Devils lost to Berlin in their first meeting of the season
4-3 in a wild match at Fritz Walter Stadium
Kaiserslautern will be missing coach Markus Anfang on the bench in Berlin
after he was handed a one-game suspension for his red card following last week’s game
The Red Devils return to Fritz Walter Stadium on Feb

“Art brings us together” is the slogan of a new German-American student art exhibit at Kaiserslautern’s city hall
which opened Tuesday with music from a string ensemble from Ramstein High School
paintings and sculptures from German and American students in the Rhineland-Palatinate region
DODEA students from Vogelweh Elementary School
Kaiserslautern High School and Ramstein High School are participating in the show
“It’s about us all feeling at home in the Kaiserslautern region,” Lord Mayor Beate Kimmel said at the opening
according the a press release from the city
A 6-year-old in the city who attends day care was diagnosed at Westpfalz clinic and is being treated at the hospital for mild symptoms
A teenager in secondary school was also diagnosed this week
The department’s investigation of those two cases includes contact tracing
the Kaiserslautern district administration said
The three cases were diagnosed independently of one each other
