On the night of Feb. 13, 2023, friends Jonah Kalawa and Jonathan Hanania were in the MSU Union together. Before the shooting started, however, Hanania left for a fraternity chapter meeting.
Though apart, the two both hid for hours that night after a gunman opened fire on campus, with one of two sites of the shooting being the MSU Union.
Their experiences that night — Kalawa hiding in the Union and Hanania hiding in his fraternity house — shook them. Now, two years later, they say while it’s not something they can forget about, they have made progress toward healing.
Kalawa, a junior in human biology, said he’s doing better than in past years when it comes to handling his emotions as the anniversary approaches.
“Obviously, there's still something there in my heart about it, but everything's getting good on my end,” Kalawa said. “Obviously I’m still feeling for everyone else that was affected that day, but I'm very grateful for where I am right now. My heart goes out to all the families and people who were impacted.”
That night, Kalawa was studying on the second floor of the MSU Union with his AirPods in. He recalled the floor being mostly empty except for a couple of students in different rooms. All of a sudden, he could not hear anything.
He looked up and saw a woman who was crying. She yelled “Oh my God, active shooter downstairs, everyone run, hide and take cover.”
Kalawa then started to register what was happening.
He recalled freezing up, not knowing what to do. Kalawa and other students ran to find a Union employee and took shelter in a room, locking the door behind them. They hid in the room for the rest of the night.
Hanania, a supply chain junior, was at the fraternity house when he and his brothers first heard about the shooting, initially through social media and then through a university-wide email alerting students about an active shooter. The email advised students to "run, hide, fight."
“We all went upstairs, hiding on the third floor, just everyone in rooms,” Hanania said. “We had like 15, 20 guys in each room, just with the doors locked, kind of being quiet, all the lights turned off, just kind of getting updates, listening to the cop radio the whole entire time. We were there for the rest of the night.”
Hanania, Kalawa and other students would stay sheltered in place for more than five hours. During that time, Kalawa and Hanania were in constant communication, with Kalawa sharing updates from the Union. Shortly after midnight, they received the all-clear.
The morning following the shooting, Kalawa was left in a state of “pure shock,” struggling to register what had happened.
“You hear about school shootings all around the nation and you never expected to happen to your school,” Kalawa said. “I was just in shock, even after five hours, I couldn't process it at all because I was just so shocked, and I didn't know what to think. A lot of people went home. I kind of just went back to my dorm, sat there for like an hour, just like, ‘holy s—, that's insane.’”
For Hanania, the terror of the night before didn’t feel real. His uncle lived in the area and was able to pick up Hanania and his sister from campus. During the car ride home, Hanania, left in disbelief, was asking himself if what just happened was a dream.
Kalawa spent the day with his family, who he said was worried for his safety and praying — one of the things that was part of his coping process.
A girl Kalawa had been hiding with the night before found his mom on Facebook and got in contact with him, he said, which led to them finding more.
“We ended up finding all those people that were in the room with us on social media,” he said. “We were kind of texting with them all day, praying for everybody, and just talking about everything that happened and checking in on them.”
Hanania’s coping process also started when he returned home and was greeted by worried family members. The next morning when he awoke, nearly his whole family was there. It was nice to see that his family was there for him and his sister, he said.
Kalawa and Hanania saw each other again for the first time a week after the shooting.
"It was great and sentimental and nice to see (Hanania) because it’s been so long after an event like that," Kalawa said. "I gave him a big hug."

Kalawa acknowledged that while his grief has lessened over the past two years, it will always stay with him.
“I would say for such a traumatic event like that, that’ll never leave your heart,” Kalawa said. “You'll always have some kind of grief for that, especially with everyone that was affected, that's always going to be moving in your heart.”
Hanania said even though he’s in a similar place, the memories from that night will never leave him. What he experienced will rush back to him on the anniversary, he said.
“Some memories and what happened, I'll never forget that and how I felt, and it’ll never leave me,” Hanania said. “But I’m starting to kind of get to the point where on a daily basis I'm OK, but when the day comes, all those memories will come back and how I felt, I will obviously remember what happened. For the most part, the grief has been gone.”
Offering advice to those who will also be experiencing memories this Feb. 13, Kalawa encouraged students to say a prayer, which is still part of his coping process.
“Pray for those who were severely affected. Pray for all of those that were on the campus, for the families,” Kalawa said. “I think having faith and always keeping Christ in your heart, I feel like that could get you through almost anything.”
Hanania encouraged students to talk to others who are feeling the same emotions on the two-year anniversary.
“I feel like, if you talk and open up about how you feel, that's the best way to get how you’re feeling off your chest,” Hanania said. “Once you get it off your chest, you'll relieve a lot of pressure, and you'll feel a lot better.”

The primary reason for tying a Kalawa on someone’s wrist is to provide protection
This power comes from the mantra the priest says during the tying of the Kalawa
The mantra gives the thread its sacred power that passes to the wearer
The sacred thread can go by different names
The name varies with the parts of India where it originates and the local cultural traditions
yellow and orange and is tied around the wrist three times
the wearer receives the protection of the thread
Photos of Trudeau wearing the red thread around his wrist date back to early July
He was seen wearing the thread at political events over the summer and fall in Sault St
such as a visit to the Canadian set for the Handmaid’s Tale TV series in Toronto and his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
There is a slight difference between a Kalawa and Raksha Sutra
A Kalawa is generally connected with religious rituals and might be tied on a person’s wrist by a priest during a visit to a Hindu temple
This is how the prime minister received his
it is tied by sisters on the wrists of their brothers during the festival
The act of tying the thread symbolizes love
the brothers promise to protect their sisters
She was renowned for her beauty and courage
Lord Krishna assured Draupadi that he will forever protect her and that she will never be short of clothes
Having a Kalawa tied on your wrist “is totally voluntary,” says Guruji
the Kalawa is a reminder of the wearer’s faith
Hindu priests tie the threads on the wrists of men and women during ritual ceremonies
it goes on the right wrist of a man and the left wrist of a woman
but that is “not a hard and fast rule,” he says
it might be placed on the wrist of the person’s dominant hand
The effectiveness of the thread’s protection is said to wane after 21 days
it is recommended that the wearer put it somewhere safe because it has taken on the energies of that person
“Put it into the ground.” This act symbolizes a return of sacred elements to nature
Trudeau has been seen more recently to be wearing another thread
It seems to have appeared on his wrist around the time of the ASEAN conference in early October and is seen again when he testified before the Foreign Interference Commission
Will they bring Trudeau “good luck” as he suggests in his video

Rethinking traditional farming methods is central to the agricultural landscape restoration process worldwide
a universal challenge with no single solution
available resources and a whole range of variables compound the difficulties farmers face to produce plentiful harvests
Smallholder farmers with few resources living in dryland areas in East Africa require rigorous interventions to shore up production and reduce the risk of food insecurity while contributing to international development and landscape restoration targets
Women in particular face challenges related to food security because they tend to be the main food providers in families
Worldwide, more than 800 million people are undernourished. Strengthening the food-producing capacity of family farmers and addressing land degradation are crucial components of building resilience against hunger
Under the “Zero Hunger” U.N
achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
assesses the height of a mango tree on her farm with the help of Eric Mulei
To support their efforts and learn more about the challenges they cope with day-to-day, researchers with World Agroforestry (ICRAF) developed a major collaborative project involving over 2,500 farming households in eastern Kenya
The backbone of the project involved innovative approaches to expand farmer-centered restoration options
including introducing new farming techniques in Kitui
scientists initiated in-depth engagement with over 500 farming households to learn how new restoration methods introduced by scientists affect livelihoods
They also wanted to understand more about the division of labor between men and women
“Women already have a disproportionately heavy workload and we wanted to see how land restoration efforts affected their daily schedules
access to and control of resources and benefits
compared to men,” said Ana Maria Paez-Valencia
“Learning more about these aspects of their lives allow us to better support the uptake of these options and find opportunities to advance gender equality at the same time.”
Women juggle labor in the field with childcare and the demands of often onerous household chores
which can involve long treks to gather water and fuel wood
Field work is traditionally divided into gender-defined roles
Men are usually in charge of the plowing to prepare the fields for planting and women typically do the bulk of the weeding
men leave the family farm for periods of time to seek employment and income-generating opportunities
and women are left to manage both home and field work
ICRAF researchers introduced an agroforestry system involving tree planting and the digging out of square or rectangular “soil basins” for planting crops using a preconceived comparison approach
Similar to water conserving “zai pits” in West Africa where the technique is common
the basins are around half a meter deep and the sides vary in length from half a meter to almost 2 meters
“Basins are advantageous because they increase the water-holding capacity of the soil and reduce the potential for erosion,” said Leigh Winowiecki
“By introducing trees to the farms and offering training in manure and compost application to improve soil health
The region is plagued with erratic and unpredictable rainfall
and is under pressure from a growing population
Planting basins allow farmers to prepare the land during the dry season before the rains – on which their crops are totally reliant for water – begin
“Farmers do not have to wait for the use of a plow
and spread their labor over an extended period of time,” Winowiecki added
Although basin preparation takes more time than traditional plowing methods
crop planting conditions and maize crop yields improved
leading farmers to say the extra time investment is worthwhile
Men got more involved in management of the trees
which included such fruit trees as mango and papaya
timber species such as melia (Melia volkensii)
and multi-purpose species such as moringa (Moringa oleifera) and neem (Azadirachta indica)
Their interest was most likely related to their ability to sell the fruit
Although the project provided farmers with seedlings
a resource that men are more likely to control
The project increased tree survival on farmer’s fields from 30 percent in 2016 to over 80 percent in 2019
adding that tree-planting can help increase the ability of soil to absorb water and reduce erosion
The challenge to increased tree cover in arid climates was low seedling survival
however this project has overcome these challenges.”
Men reported they had less time for leisure and community activities
and women said they had less time for housework
Women also said they spent more time on land preparation than they had previously
many of whom have now formed collective farming groups to dig basins in groups
reporting increased morale and motivation and continued sharing of lessons learned and innovations on their farms
“While men are expected to look for off-farm income, women are often responsible for growing food for the family to eat, so the boost in yields ultimately benefits women, reducing their workload overall,” said Mary Crossland, a Ph.D. student at Britain’s Bangor University in Wales
farmers produce maize to sell and for household consumption
A major benefit of basins is that when the rains are poor they produce a maize yield
while their traditional farming practices fail completely
“As farmers have gained confidence in the basins
they have started to experiment with growing fruit and vegetables within them
indicating that the technology could be used with higher-value crops
and help increase incomes,” Crossland said
“We’ve seen that the number of basins the average farmer has on their farm has increased from an average of 35 basins in 2018 to over 80 basins in 2020
although several farmers have dug hundreds and even thousands of basins,” she said
adding that the scientists observed yield increases of two to six times the usual amount
the scientists learned that the best approach is to offer multi-faceted options

Social media was abuzz with the claim that the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has discriminated against a Hindu student on religious grounds
The allegation is that the university has discriminated against a Hindu student in the process of admission for the Master of Law (LLM) course
who was not allowed to sit for the LLM entrance examination
accused the university of religious prejudice
Prashant Patel Umrao, who has been caught spreading fake news in the past
tweeted that the student was not allowed to sit for the exam because he was wearing a ‘kalawa’ or the sacred thread
Umrao’s tweet has been retweeted over 3200 times already
A Hindu LL.M. student from AMU is denied from examination because he was wearing Kalawa on his hand. Till last year Hindu students in AMU were denied from food in day time during #Ramazan when I raised it

— Anil Tiwari (@Interceptors) June 22, 2018
Alt News contacted the law department of AMU which strongly refuted the allegation and said that the student was disallowed from appearing for the examination as he failed to fulfill the eligibility criteria. According to university rules
only those candidates who have secured 55% and above in the LLB will be eligible for admission to the LLM course
“The allegation is completely baseless
We disallowed the student from appearing because he did not fulfill the eligibility criteria for the course
A minimum of 55% in LLB is required for the LLM course
The accusation that we discriminated him because he is Hindu is completely false
AMU does not discriminate among students on the basis of religion.”
Alt News was able to access the application form of the candidate which revealed that the candidate’s score at the undergraduate level did not meet the eligibility criteria
To protect the privacy of the said candidate
we have not reproduced a copy of his application form here
The university had put up a list of candidates on its website who were deemed ineligible for the entrance exam
out of which some candidates are Hindu and the other are Muslim
Alt News contacted the candidate in question who stuck to his version of events
“I checked online and saw that my admit card is not there
I called the toll free number and was told to collect it from the law department
I was asked my name and then they asked me to leave
and they kept staring at the ‘kalawa’ (sacred thread) on my hand
If I was ineligible for the exam as they say
why was my application accepted and my fees submitted
They could have put up a list in college if my form had been rejected
nor am I associated with a political party or movement”
Apart from the controversy surrounding the portrait of Mohammad Ali Jinnah
Aligarh Muslim University has repeatedly been in the eye of the storm in recent times
Originally founded in 1875 by Syed Ahmed Khan as the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College
AMU due to its perceived Muslim character continues to be at the centre of controversies

Kalawa ward is arguably one of the driest parts of Makueni county
residents have to trek a considerable distance to fetch water from points that the county government has continued to develop across the expansive ward
A partnership between the county government and World Vision is however projected to change the above scenario and make the ward one of the water secure wards in the county
The two institutions are co-funding a project dubbed Athi-Kalawa Sanitation Project meant to distribute water to 80 % of the ward area
The project involves pumping water from Athi River to Wii hills
construction of a 500 cubic meters reservoir and three distribution lines (Kalawa
Miangeni and Syotuvali) for communal water circulation
World Vision national director Lilian Dodzo who paid a courtesy call to governor Kivutha Kibwana on Tuesday
said the project purposes to cut the distance to the nearest water point from households to a maximum of 500 meters
According to County Executive Committee member for Water and Sanitation Rosemary Maundu
the project is 30 percent done and phase 1 must be complete before end of the year 2020
65 households from Katangini Location in Kalawa Ward will access water for household consumption and enhance agricultural production
once Katangani borehole project is completed
The borehole with an estimated capacity of 25- cubic –meter of fresh water is a project of the county government through Small-scale Irrigation Value Addition Project (SIVAP) and will supply water for domestic use and irrigation
Agriculture Executive Joyce Mutua inspected the progress of the borehole drilling to ensure its timely completion
a total of 10 boreholes are scheduled to be drilled
These boreholes include Nduumoni in Nzakika
Katangini location in Kalawa ward (ongoing) Linga in Kako waia
Utangwa in Kithungo Kitundu ward and Kalaanzoni borehole in Kalaanzoni ward
The boreholes will be equipped with solar-powered pumping system
Mutua also inspected ongoing construction works for the Kanini Kaseo micro-irrigation project
Mutua was accompanied by the Agriculture Chief Officer Dr
Victoria Kyallo and County Director for Agriculture Mary Muteti
This move also aims to enhance food security by providing water for irrigation
