Pastorin Ursula Sieg informed me that she arranged for me to preach in a church whose pastor in those days was a Nazi and a murderer
who arranged every detail of our 10-week visit to Germany
but it is also the site of a former concentration camp where prisoners endured brutal
Wealthy neighbors nearby lived their lives in comfort
I couldn’t I drive through the region without being flooded by images of Nazi soldiers hunting after me with snarling Rottweilers
16th-century structure that was once the pulpit of Ernst Szymanowski (who Germanized his Polish name to Biberstein)
Biberstein was an ardent Hitler supporter who left the church to become a lieutenant colonel in the SS
supervising at least two mass murders that claimed at least 2000 lives
He was tried at Nuremberg for his crimes and sentenced to death by hanging
but the sentence was commuted to life in prison
Through pressure exerted by the Lutheran Church
Biberstein was released from prison in 1958 and lived out his life in comfort until he died at age 85
Pastorin Martina Dittkrist warmly introduced me as the first rabbi ever to preach in that church. My visit, she said, was part of the church’s ongoing process of atonement for the sins of its past. The text for that Sunday was the Exodus passage (Chapter 34) in which God commanded Moses to carve out two tablets of stone to replace those he smashed and
I referenced the Midrashic teaching that our ancestors not only carried the new tablets of the Covenant in the ark
The lesson is that we learn as much or even more from our failures as we do from our successes
I also emphasized the difference between the anger of God
and the love and mercy of God that extends to the thousandth
you must always carry the broken stones that Biberstein represents with you
but you can go forward confident that your atonement is accepted and that your generation does not bear direct responsibility for the sins of the past
And then I addressed the ghost of Biberstein: “Despite your sins
and we must always carry its lessons with us
We do so not to wallow in pity but to shape a better a future.”
The symbol of Michaeliskirchen in Kaltenkirchen will always be the haunting painting of “The Broken Cross” by Hannelore Golberg
which hangs in its reception room as an acknowledgment of the sad chapter in the church’s history
answering questions of a standing-room crowd about our visit and my sermon
the soldiers and Rottweilers were no longer looking for me
may the lessons of both crosses lead the congregation forward on its journey of atonement
reconciliation and faithful service to God
Min in Biblical Interpretation from Vanderbilt Divinity School
named him its “Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.”

Refrigerated transport Joachim Jacobs GmbH & Co
has always been a recognized service provider in the fresh transport sector in the north of Germany
moved to a new site on the Kaltenkirchen industrial site last year and is now ready for the future with an expanded capacity of around 8,000 m2
Joachim Jacobs will retire at the age of 70
to hand over management to Max-Wilhelm Saara
the successor sees the future as positive for his company: "At our current location we have enough opportunities to expand our activities
We already have additional services such as a handling hall for TC products and a truck washing system
which we still use for 90 percent of our own vehicles," says Mr
Jacobs Transport GmbH has been IFS certified for several years
Organic transport as a development areaAs a traditional company
Jacobs has been active in the fresh transport sector for many years: Due to its proximity to the fresh markets in Bremen
fruit and vegetables also make up a substantial part of the turnover.A long-term partner since 2000 is Naturkost Grell
one of the larger organic suppliers in Northern Germany
"Although we are not alone in the transport of organic goods on the market
there is no real abundance of providers in this area
we are also getting more and more inquiries from organic suppliers
we see this customer base as an interesting development area for our company," says Saara
Traffic congestion and toll paymentsBut Joachim Jacobs GmbH & Co
certainly sees inevitable challenges in and around the transport sector
primarily on the A7 and in Hamburg city traffic: "Whenever possible
around Hamburg we start rolling at 4:00 clock
it is becoming increasingly difficult to do this
since many customers want to present fresh goods and therefore only want to be supplied between 6:00 and 7:00
toll regulations are becoming more and more complicated for us as well as for the customers
Of course we are interested in renewable energies for our vehicles so that we can drive toll-free
Driver shortagesA final but worrying problem is the continued driver shortage
mainly from Eastern Europe and third countries
"We communicate on an equal footing with our staff and try to have them appropriately insuranced
This is something that is clearly appreciated."
