FC Kaiserslautern came back twice from behind Sunday
but the 2-2 tie in Karlsruhe did not get the Red Devils any closer to third place and a promotion to the Bundesliga
FCK coach Torsten Lieberknecht sent the same starters onto the pitch as last weekend against Schalke
And Kaiserslautern had the first good scoring chance of the game in the seventh minute when Ragnar Ache reacted quickly on a loose ball
but Karlsruhe keeper Max Weiss made the stop
Karlsruhe took the lead three minutes later when Louey Ben Farhat converted a corner kick past Julian Krahl
The Red Devils evened the score in the 31st minute
Jan Elvedi connected with Marlon Ritter’s kick with his left foot from about six yards out
Both teams had scoring chances before and after the intermission
But a lapse in the Kaiserslautern defense in the 58th minute left Sebastian Jung free to put KSC back in the lead
It only took the Red Devils six minutes to get back in the game
Daniel Hanslik headed a cross from Jannis Heuer past Weiss into the Karlsruhe net for the 2-2
The deadlock left the Red Devils in seventh place with 50 points; Karlsruhe dropped to nineth
The big winners in the race to the Bundesliga were Hamburg
returning to first place after a win in Darmstadt
FCK’s neighbor to the west climbed into third place with 52 points
which fell from third to fifth after losing at home to lowly Münster
The second division standings are still tight
Cologne is three points ahead of Elversberg
Paderborn is in fourth also with 52 points
Hannover and Karlsruhe are theoretically still in the running for third place and the relegation series against Bundesliga’s 16th place team
Next up for the Red Devils is their final home game of the season on Sunday
a must-win match against Darmstadt 98 at 1:30 p.m
The final game of the season is May 18 in Cologne
a match that could be decisive for both teams

FC Kaiserslautern look ahead to derby clash in Karlsruhe
reflect on historic victory over Köln | OneFootballGet German Football News
The surprise gamble of 2. Bundesliga side FC Kaiserslautern to change coaches with only four matchdays remaining has produced an early success
Former Lautern player Torsten Lieberknecht’s team defeated FC Schalke 04 at home last weekend
The result stemmed from a three-match losing streak that spelled the end of head coach Markus Anfang’s tenure
but are only one point below the promotion-relegation playoff spot contested by a tight field
The road ahead nevertheless remains anything but easy
Lieberknecht’s Pfälzer must now travel to regional rivals Karlsruher SC this weekend
Lautern haven’t won away at the Wildpark Stadion at this level in over 11 years
After a home fixture against Lieberknecht’s former club SV Darmstadt 98, Lautern must travel to the RheinEnergieStadion to face current 2. Bundesliga league leaders FC Köln
Lieberknecht commented on the forthcoming match in Baden at his Friday press conference
the coach drew some interesting historical parallels
and then let loose,” Lieberknecht said of the forthcoming fixture
“Everyone has performed so well this week that I am spoiled for choice when it comes to selecting the squad for the match
it’s good to know that we have all the guys on board
“It’ll be a heated atmosphere at the Wildpark,” Lieberknecht continued
Reflecting upon the road ahead last weekend, Lieberknecht couldn’t help but bring up an interesting piece of history. Back in 1991, Lautern secured their third league title on the season’s final matchday with a 2-6 away win at Köln. Lieberknecht would make his professional debut for FCK one year later
“Kôln has already seen something truly magnificent for FC Kaiserslautern,” Lieberknecht said
“Why shouldn’t we talk about it and remember it?”

The Red Devils are looking to get promoted to the Bundesliga
with three matches remaining in the season
As always expressed by ex-coach Markus Anfang
the season goal was to improve play and have a campaign without demotion fears
But with Anfang now gone and a win under new coach Torsten Lieberknecht’s belt
FC Kaiserslautern changed its season goal — promotion to the top flight of German soccer
FCK next step toward that goal is a 1:30 p.m
The Red Devils are in seventh place with 49 points
one point behind third-place Magdeburg and four behind Hamburg in second
Third place qualifies for two playoff games against the Bundesliga’s 16th place team
Second place would be direct promotion to the Bundesliga
but Kaiserslautern has the worst goal difference of the pack
A KSC win would put them in contention for promotion
Lieberknecht’s bench last week looked different
with a bunch of players substituted in that saw little or no action under Anfang
it will be interesting to see who is in the lineup Sunday
Around 3,500 supporters will be at Wildpark Stadium to cheer the Red Devils on
The final game of the season is in Cologne at 3:30 p.m
The away contingent for the match sold out in minutes
there were 100,000 requests to be part of the team’s limited contingent
That’s more than for the Red Devils’ German cup final last year
Metrics details
Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of urban heat islands and stormwater flooding
In order to mitigate these threats cities are turning toward green infrastructure to restore the hydrologic cycle in a way that increases the ecosystem services provided by trees
Strategically designed green infrastructure can mitigate runoff volume by rainfall interception through tree canopies and redirect impervious runoff into bioswales that promote infiltration
urban greens mitigate extreme heat via evapotranspiration and shading
Here we applied the i-Tree HydroPlus model to the German city of Karlsruhe and its twenty-seven districts with varying initial conditions of tree cover to analyze the potential for both runoff and heat mitigation during dry and wet periods throughout a 5-year period
After analyzing initial tree cover and drainage conditions
we used the model to simulate a green infrastructure scenario for each district with restored hydrology and tree cover at 30%
Regarding trade-offs between runoff and heat mitigation
the results confirm that dry soils before storm events lead to greater runoff reduction by 10%
and wet soils prior to heatwaves resulted in a greater evaporative cooling
the green infrastructure scenarios resulted in decreasing the number of extreme heat hours (Heat Index > 31 °C) per year on average by 64.5%
and to reduce runoff in average by 58% across all city districts
our simulation results show that investing into a greener infrastructure
has positive impacts on microclimate and hydrology
we discuss synergies and trade-offs of the investigated management options as well as the transferability of results to other cities
sensible to investigate the impact of urban greening on both ecosystem services together
but knowledge about quantitative cause-effect relationships and eventual trade-offs is still missing
depicting possible synergies or trade-offs that may affect the degree of ecosystem service benefit with different management options is highly relevant
Our hypotheses are that (1) dry conditions will decrease the heat mitigation effect provided by trees during very warm periods but improve flood protection due to enhanced infiltration
and (2) increasing tree canopy and pervious cover decreases the incidences of extreme heat and stormwater runoff
To test these hypotheses and explore the extreme heat and stormwater runoff changes associated with land cover
we applied a numerical simulation model i-Tree HydroPlus under current climate conditions using either the current vegetation cover or one based on an urban greening scenario
The workflow comprises several steps that outline the adopted methodology
illustrated in S3 and detailed in the following paragraphs
two coupled hydro-climatology models (Models) were implemented to support water and energy balances under different scenarios
spatial land cover and meteorological data were processed as inputs (Inputs) to support the scenarios
Then model outputs were compared with observed mobile air temperature data for validation (Evaluation with observed data)
two extreme events—characterized by very hot and dry conditions
and heavy rainfall with wet conditions—were analyzed to test the hypothesis (Extreme events analysis)
the reduction of apparent temperature and avoided runoff
were assessed under different tree cover scenarios (Tree cover scenarios)
i-Tree HydroPlus includes process-based environmental models that share common algorithms to track the water and energy balance during simulations of land cover changes
specifically considering vegetation processes
Model outputs include raster maps or time series of estimated air temperature
as well as many storages and fluxes of water and energy such as soil moisture and latent heat
The i-Tree Hydro model19
which is a statistically distributed urban water balance routine with various options for land cover characterization and runoff properties
specifically calculates sub-hourly to annual patterns in stormwater runoff throughout multiple years
The model covers the entire watershed considering general urban structure as well as orographic boundary conditions (such as slope)
each containing areas with hydrologically similar behavior
the energy balance solves for latent and sensible heat fluxes based on shortwave and longwave radiation
Since runtime is inversely related to raster pixel resolution
we used a differentiated approach with three spatial resolutions for practical reasons: a single lumped area resolution with the i-Tree Hydro model representing 30 statistically indexed topographic indices (derived from 30 m resolution topography)
and with the i-Tree Cool Air model a 30 m (for climate-specific event simulations)
and a 300 m (for long-term simulations) horizontal raster resolution
The 300 m resolution raster was used for simulations with a duration of years when results would be spatially aggregated into the 27 district polygons
while the 30 m resolution raster was used for simulations with day to hour duration when results required more spatial detail
each of these terms is influencing how precipitation is partitioned into stormwater runoff or into infiltration and soil moisture reserves
albedo and emissivity of land cover type and available liquid water determines how shortwave and longwave radiation were partitioned into the fluxes of ground heat
we established a green infrastructure case with sustainable urban drainage to bioswales where depression storage depths were increased to represent intentional efforts to pond water for infiltration
Here we set the surface storage at pervious areas with tree cover to 15 mm and pervious area with short vegetation to 12.5 mm
the total impervious area was approximately 31% of the total area
which yielded a DCIA fraction of 0.55 (or 17% of total area) for the base case and 0.31 (or 9.6% of total area) for the green infrastructure case
Runoff from disconnected impervious areas was sent to pervious areas
Different parameter values were obtained for the 30 m and 300 m resolution topographic data
Enforcing no change in groundwater depth is a standard hydrological assumption to simplify unknowns in annual or longer water balance analyses while allowing for variation in depth at each time step during the simulation
Runoff partitioning is influenced by soil moisture through variable groundwater depth
and infiltration rates that decrease with soil moisture
Instantaneous runoff occurs either due to saturation excess
when rainfall surpasses infiltration capacity
The soil rooting depth was set to 0.5 m for tree cover and 0.25 m for short vegetation
and for soils without vegetation evapotranspiration was effective to a soil depth of 0.2 m
Land cover data products of tree cover, impervious cover, and land cover class (e.g., urban, agriculture) were obtained from the European Space Agency Copernicus land cover data (CLMS) (https://land.copernicus.eu/)
While other sources of such data were available
the CLMS were considered the best option for quality assurance and replication
widespread use among terrestrial scientists
and spatial continuity across all German cities
and the spatial information was harmonized and resampled to a resolution of 30 m
District maps and statistics about the population were obtained from the department of the City of Karlsruhe (https://web6.karlsruhe.de/Stadtentwicklung/statistik/atlas/)
Climatology record for the study area of Karlsruhe
Germany with Top: monthly average air temperatures (2017–2021) with standard deviation lines
and Bottom: Monthly total precipitation (2017–2021)
A 100-m buffer around the single measurement point was considered to assess the relative density of tree cover using the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) QGIS and data were grouped into four groups according to the time of day
The mean air temperature for each time group was then calculated and sorted for the relative class of tree cover density
Hourly model simulations were executed for the reference days increasing tree cover in classes of 10%
and considering 60% of average imperviousness and developed land cover class (e.g.
NLCD LC = 24) to account for vehicle path on street patches
The results were then averaged and grouped over the four time periods and sorted by tree canopy density for comparison with measurements
These observed extremes were then simulated using actual and modified initial settings to evaluate the sensitivity of heat and runoff mitigation to changes in soil moisture and precipitation intensity
the actual dry soil conditions were contrasted with a high soil moisture (0.24 cm3/cm3)
In simulations for the extreme precipitation event of June 24th 2021
the actual prior wet conditions (soil moisture = 0.29 cm3/cm3) were contrasted with a dry soil condition (soil moisture = 0.22 cm3/cm3)
It is important to note that we only represented the residential area in each district
and excluded land areas denoted as forest or agricultural land cover
The space for additional tree canopy coverage was taken from impervious surfaces within the district that were not occupied with any green infrastructure
In order to account for tree coverage expanding from pervious to impervious surfaces
only 0.67% of impervious area was converted to pervious surface (i.e.
and 0.33% was maintained as impervious surface but covered by tree canopy
and we accordingly defined extreme temperatures as Tapp > 31 °C

A combined analysis integrating sustainable urban drainage
given the efficiency of mitigating extreme runoff and heat depends on filling and draining soil moisture within a mixed landscape of impervious and tree cover
This comes with the disadvantage of a campaign-based evaluation being reduced to single points in time
Given that these stormwater measures would also be beneficial to reduce extreme heat damages
this supports the need to synergistically look into water as well as energy management of a city since they are interlinked
this study shows that not considering both together might underestimate the overall impact considerably
This study has demonstrated that extreme heat and runoff mitigation significantly improve for cities with an increase in green infrastructure that integrates tree cover and sustainable urban drainage
This is particularly relevant given climate change and predictions of extreme temperature and precipitation in many cities
it has been shown that the efficiency of extreme heat mitigation is closely tied to water availability
which represents an essential prerequisite for evapotranspiration processes
stormwater runoff mitigation is (slightly) enhanced under dry initial conditions
our study has confirmed that green infrastructure strategies can be strategically designed starting from the analysis of land use
tree cover and impervious cover in city districts to reduce extreme weather events harmful for human health
An integrated approach to prioritize city districts for green infrastructure projects that enhance ecosystem services will also consider where the population is most vulnerable and will benefit most
The study also shows that synergies or trade-offs of management options regarding urban greening can be assessed using sophisticated decision support tools such as a water and energy model able to consider various scenarios
and population statistics were indicated in the 'Model inputs of map data and weather’ section of the Methodology

while Malaika Mihambo became the first woman this year to surpass seven metres in the long jump at the fifth World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold event of the year on Friday (7)
world indoor champion Mitton broke the North American indoor record and equalled her own outright Canadian record by launching the shot 20.68m in the final round
The results showed her in second place up until that point
behind USA’s two-time world champion Chase Jackson who had earlier become the first athlete of the year to surpass 20 metres by throwing 20.06m in the opening round
But it actually ended up being Dutch record-holder Jessica Schilder she needed to beat
as a big fourth-round throw that was originally judged a foul was reinstated after the competition
it put Schilder – who had started the competition as the world leader – into second place behind Mitton
It is the first time since the 1991 World Indoor Championships in Seville that three women have thrown beyond 20 metres in a single indoor competition
Mitton had responded to Jackson's strong opening throw with 19.76m in the third round and 19.94m in the fourth
While Jackson again threatened the 20-metre mark with 19.90m in the fifth round
Returning to the circle for the penultimate throw of the competition
she let out a roar as she launched the implement and saw it fly well beyond the 20-metre tape
Jackson was the last to throw and managed 19.31m
eventually finishing third once Schilder's 20.09m was confirmed
two-time world gold medallist and world leader
the competition featured the Olympic champion
you know it's a really good one,” said Mitton
whose winning mark was the farthest indoor throw since the 20.98m put achieved by Valerie Adams in Zurich in August 2013
“I immediately knew it was going to be over 20
You can no longer just come out and throw 19.50m and expect to win
there's always somebody at your heels.”
home favourite Mihambo soared 7.07m to secure victory in style
Matching the indoor PB she set in 2020 with the equal sixth-farthest winning mark of her career
the Tokyo Olympic gold medallist broke the 31-year-old meeting record and clapped in celebration as she stepped out of the sand
After fouling her first attempt and jumping 6.08m in the second round
Germany’s Mihambo only took one more jump – that 7.07m coming in the fourth round
She won by 28cm ahead of her compatriot Mikaelle Assani (6.79m)
while Bulgaria’s Plamena Mitkova was third with a 6.69m leap
“I’m very happy,” said Mihambo
“I hadn't expected to set my personal best here and jump a world lead.”
Explaining her decision to not take all six opportunities to jump
I'm jumping in my next competition on Sunday
I'm a jumper who puts everything into speed
I'm in a very good mood and am happy that I'm fit.”
Great Britain’s world indoor champion Molly Caudery achieved a clutch win on her season opener
clearing 4.75m on her third and final attempt
she decided to pass at 4.70m and Slovenia’s Tina Sutej took the lead at that point when she soared over the height on her first try
But Sutej was unable to make it over 4.75m and victory was Caudery’s when she managed it on her last attempt.
Fresh off setting a Swedish indoor mile record at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Ostrava
Samuel Pihlstrom was a controlled winner of the men’s 1500m in Karlsruhe
Kicking on after pacemaker Collins Kipruto stepped aside
Pihlstrom had a 10-metre lead with one lap to go and while Federico Riva led the chase group and finished fast
he ran out of track and could only watch as Pihlstrom strode over the finish line to win in 3:35.62
while Romain Mornet of France was third in 3:37.03
Stefan Nillessen also judged his race to perfection in the men’s 3000m
surging away in the closing stages to win in a Dutch indoor record of 7:37.10

He had been up against the discipline’s two most recent Dutch record-holders – Mike Foppen
who improved the record to 7:40.99 in January
But this time it was Nillessen’s turn
as he beat them both among some other strong opposition
finishing clear ahead of Kenya’s Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang (7:38.00 PB)
Foppen also ran a PB to finish inside the previous Dutch record
South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso looked understandably delighted with her 800m run
Racing only the second indoor 800m of her career after making her debut in at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Belgrade last week
the Olympic finalist dipped under two minutes
missing the world lead by just 0.01 with a national indoor record of 1:59.88
After following the pacemaker and Ethiopia’s four-time world indoor finalist Habitam Alemu through half way in 57.20
Sekgodiso kicked and eased past a tiring Alemu as they ran down the back straight for the final time
Sekgodiso carried that momentum through to the finish to clinch a clear win
with Germany’s Majtie Kolberg also passing Alemu to claim the runner-up spot – 2:00.84 to 2:01.34.
Another long-standing meeting record fell in the men’s 400m
as US indoor champion Brian Faust won the first of the two finals in 46.03
Italy’s Luca Sito was second in 46.27
while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene won the second final in 46.58
Alice Mangione stormed to an Italian indoor record to win the first of the two women’s 400m finals
improving her previous PB of 52.60 with a run of 51.75 to hold off Egypt’s Bassant Hemida (52.17)
Great Britain’s Lina Nielsen won the second final in 51.93 ahead of Martina Weil
who improved the Chilean indoor record to 52.40
France’s world finalist Wilhem Belocian won the men’s 60m hurdles
Luxembourg’s Patrizia van der Weken continued her unbeaten season in the 60m
clocking 7.13 in the final after winning her heat in 7.17
while Ethiopia’s Olympic steeplechase finalist Lomi Muleta won a tactical women’s 3000m in 8:57.52.

the German Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe questioned the conditions under which the European Central Bank (ECB) had adopted a Public Sector Purchase Programme (PSPP)
thus contradicting the position taken by the Court of Justice of the European Union in the same case
This judgment had great resonance in the press and in business circles
as it could be seen as a challenge to the quantitative easing policies pursued by the European Central Bank
particularly at a time when it had to deal with the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic
the German Constitutional Court decided not to comply with a decision from the Court of Justice of the European Union
it is to be feared that the uniformity of the European Law is cast doubt on and that Member States opposed to the EU on topics relating to the respect of human rights will use that decision in their interest
The Franco-German initiative to establish a European Economic Recovery Fund
2020 and on the basis of which the European Council reached an agreement on July 21
Such a plan will allow the Member States to regain the upper hand in supporting the economy and the ECB to focus on more direct monetary objectives
according to the spirit of the EU's founding treaties

senior decision-makers and representatives of civil society from both countries
Cerfa develops the Franco-German debate and stimulates political proposals
It regularly publishes studies through two collections: Cerfa notes and studies as well as Franco-German visions
Cerfa maintains close relations with the network of German foundations and think tanks
In addition to its research and debate activities
Cerfa promotes the emergence of a new Franco-German generation through original cooperation programs
Cerfa led a program on multilateralism with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Paris
This program is aimed at young professionals from both countries interested in the issues of multilateralism in the context of their activities
It covered a wide range of themes relating to multilateralism

One thing has been clear since Donald Trump's return to the White House: the very existence of the European unification project is threatened
Unless it develops a sovereign defense policy to counter the war in Ukraine and the weakening of American security guarantees
the European Union will continue to see its internal cohesion and external attractiveness wane
almost 60 million voters were called upon to elect a new Bundestag

Germany recorded its highest participation since 1987—an increase of 6.1 percentage points compared to 2021
the high turnout particularly benefited the Alternative for Germany (AfD)
which was able to mobilize many former non-voters
Many voters sought to punish the outgoing government with their ballots
as its approval rating had dropped to just 14% before the coalition broke apart in November 2024
Germany is now very likely heading toward a grand coalition between the CDU/CSU and the SPD
with exploratory talks having begun on February 28
Three global champions will clash in a shot put showdown at the INIT Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe
this season’s fifth World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold fixture
At a meeting that features multiple major medallists
the women’s shot put is set to be among the highlights as it brings together Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye
world indoor champion Sarah Mitton and two-time world champion Chase Jackson as they all meet indoors for the first time since last year’s World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
the Canadian throwing 20.22m for a mark that remains her indoor best
while Ogunleye set a PB of 20.19m to secure silver ahead of Jackson
Ogunleye went on to become the Olympic champion in Paris
while Mitton won the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels in September ahead of Jackson and Ogunleye
which was the last time they all went head-to-head
USA’s Jackson opened her season with a win at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Astana and then was third in Val-de-Reuil
one place behind Mitton in a competition won by Dutch record-holder Jessica Schilder
Schilder is also among the entries for Karlsruhe and she starts as the world leader thanks to her 19.85m put in Val-de-Reuil
Ogunleye sits second on the top list so far this season with her throw of 19.77m in Nordhausen last month and will look to build on that when she returns to action in front of another home crowd
Joining them in the line-up are Schilder’s compatriot Jorinde van Klinken and Sweden’s Fanny Roos
Another home star features in the women’s long jump
Two-time world champion Malaika Mihambo opened her season with a 6.79m leap in Dortmund last month and in Karlsruhe she will go up against her compatriot Mikaelle Assani
who placed fourth at the World Indoor Championships last year
plus Sweden’s Khaddi Sagnia and Serbia’s Milica Gardasevic
Great Britain’s world indoor champion Molly Caudery will open her season in a clash against Canada’s Olympic bronze medallist Alysha Newman and Slovenia’s 2022 world indoor bronze medallist Tina Sutej
"I’m excited to be here and I’m really happy to be in Karlsruhe
because any time I hear 'Karlsruhe' I remember that competition," said Newman
and it was a three way tie – I’ve never seen that in the history of women’s pole vault
"Tomorrow I’m excited to just be out there and jump
I’m excited to be among some of the best athletes in the world to push me."
World 1500m bronze medallist Narve Gilje Nordas is also among those making his indoor season debut in Karlsruhe
although the Norwegian began his year with a 27:33 10km in Valencia last month
when he will go up against home athletes Mohamed Abdilaahi
Ethiopia’s four-time world indoor finalist Habitam Alemu leads the entries for the women’s 800m
The 27-year-old ran her indoor PB of 1:57.86 when winning at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Torun last year and now she opens her season in Karlsruhe
where she will race a field featuring her compatriot Worknesh Mesele
Slovenia’s Anita Horvat and South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso
who contests the second indoor 800m of her career after making her debut in Belgrade last week
The women’s 3000m includes Ethiopia’s Olympic steeplechase finalist Lomi Muleta
plus Portugal’s Mariana Machado and Italy’s Federica Del Buono
who last clashed in the World Cross Country Tour Gold meeting in Albufeira on Sunday
who won the overall World Indoor Tour title in the 800m in 2020
races the third 1500m of his career and his first ever indoors
He’ll be challenged by Samuel Pihlstrom
who ran a Swedish indoor mile record of 3:54.78 in Ostrava
plus Italy’s Federico Riva and Spain’s Ignacio Fontes
Three Olympic bronze medallists – 4x100m teammates Gina Luckenkemper
Alexandra Burghardt and Lisa Mayer – star in the 60m in front of a home crowd
The trio combined with Rebekka Haase to finish third in the relay in Paris and now they will challenge themselves in an event that also features The Gambia’s African 100m champion Gina Mariam Bass Bittaye
They will face tough opposition from Luxembourg’s Patrizia van der Weken
who pipped Poland’s world indoor silver medallist Ewa Swoboda to victory in Ostrava
missing her recently set PB by just 0.01 with 7.08
The men’s 60m hurdles should also be highly competitive
as it features Spain’s 2022 world 110m hurdles bronze medallist Asier Martinez
2019 European indoor champion Milan Trajkovic of Cyprus and USA’s Jamal Britt
who was fourth at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Boston on Sunday
Great Britain’s Lina Nielsen will take on Belgium’s Naomi Van Den Broeck
while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene and US indoor champion Brian Faust are among the entries in the men's race
FC Kaiserslautern is back on the Betzenberg on Saturday for a 1 p.m
match against long-time rival Karlsruher FC
The Red Devils come into the game sitting in third place with 23 points after going undefeated in their last six games
showing just how tight the second division table is going into the 15th week of the season
While Paderborn is four points up on the competition
only three points separate second place from 11th
While FCK’s place in the standings is good news
the bad news is the team’s top striker Ragnar Ache will probably be out until the winter break after suffering a calf injury in last week’s 3-0 win against Schalke
Expect Fritz Walter Stadium to be sold out Saturday in the rivalry that goes back decades
lost 16 and 26 times the games ended in a tie
In their last meeting on the Betzenberg in February
Next week FCK travels to Darmstadt before ending the first half of the season at Fritz Walter Stadium in another big match on Dec

Claire was born to Frank and Eva (Wald) Boehm in Karlsruhe
As an adult she often marveled at the strength of her parents and took pride in being one of the seven “Boehm Girls”
Claire’s mother instilled the virtues of faithfulness
patience and the value of hard work both in the home and in the fields
while her father gifted her a love of learning
all of which she would carry through her entire life
Attending “Sister’s school” through eighth grade in the strongly German-Russian community
Claire learned to speak English for the first time
Claire graduated Valedictorian from Karlsruhe High School in 1943 and after a brief time teaching in a one room schoolhouse
together they built a successful farm/ranch operation including a strong herd of registered angus cattle
Both Al and Claire were committed to hard work
Claire spent many years sharing her time and talent teaching CCD (religion classes)
serving almost countless funeral and wedding meals with the Christian Mothers
volunteering at numerous school activities and working election polling sites alongside Al
When God delayed Claire and Al the gift of children of their own
Claire spent nearly two decades as a second mother and providing a second home many of her nieces and nephews
and talent for filling bellies with the best homecooked meals
Claire’s vegetable gardens were legendary
a testament to her love of spending her days drenched in the sunshine and being serenaded by the birds living in the shelterbelt protecting her garden and home
Many families of friends and relatives were nourished with bounty of her loving work
and from the thousands of chickens she raised over the years
She not only provided marvelous farm grown chicken
she also taught many of her extended family respect for God’s gifts by giving them the opportunity participate in the preparation of those gifts from coop to table
As her loved ones grew up and had families of their own many looked forward Al’s annual cattle round up and Claire’s unparalleled chicken and rice
mountains of German potato salad and fresh tomato and cucumber salad
You truly understood the taste of love if you were ever lucky enough to be served her kase knoephla made with homemade cottage cheese or her rivela soup
along with hamburgers featuring Al’s ground beef and her homemade buns
You always knew rivela soup was coming when sumptuous creamed chicken appeared for Saturday night supper
Although Claire would claim to be no artist
and attention to detail were on full display in dozens of afghans
and baby blankets she produced over the years
including an intricately crocheted Baptismal gown worn by her grandsons
as well as some of her great grandchildren.
Claire moved to Bismarck in 2004 to be closer to her son Patrick
daughter-in-law Vicky and her cherished grandsons
she was delighted to blessed with the opportunity to attend daily Mass and her sweet
kind demeaner and infectious smile gained her many loyal friends both from 8am Mass and Serra Club
She treasured the fact that her Cathedral district apartment allowed her to walk to Mass
but mostly that it allowed her home to be an after-school haven for her precious grandsons
She was a fixture at all their music and sporting events at Cathedral Elementary and St Mary’s Central High School
she was able to fully immerse herself in her love of reading
Declaring she had “retired from nearly 70 years of cooking”
she delighted in taking her family out for brunch after Sunday Mass
It was also interesting how often food delivery drivers would claim to recognize her face or address
Claire looked forward their weekly visits at Marillac Manner and St Vincent’s for rummikub and jigsaw puzzles until Rose’s passing in 2012
Claire’s final years were spent learning to receive and be cared for after a lifetime of giving and caring
which ended up being gifts of grace for both her and her son.
She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings
Frank (Marion) Boehm and an infant brother Michael.

the carefree city of Karlsruhe brims with eye-catching architecture
soak up the sun in one of Germany’s warmest cities
With around 140 days of sunshine each year
Karlsruhe is one of Germany’s most sun-soaked cities
making it perfect for a summer weekend break

Karlsruhe in southwest Germany is somewhat young by European standards
this neo-classical city is set amid the Vosges Mountains
the Palatinate Forest and the Black Forest in the state of Baden-Württemberg
and the seat of German law — the German Federal Court of Justice
Arts and outdoor living dominate daily life in the city
while the natural playground of Baden-Württemberg is just a stone’s throw away
Here's how to explore the city at its best this summer
or for the best view of Karlsruhe’s neo-classical design
where colourful buildings vie for attention alongside the baroque-era Church of the Holy Ghost
which was built over the tomb of the city’s founder
their fragrance filling the square and lingering over the terraces of nearby cafes and restaurants
where waiters pair the best German wines with Mediterranean-influenced dishes
but is most impressive when viewed from the outside in its garden setting

With both sides probing in the first twenty minutes
the first big chance however came in the 24th minute through Augsburg's Claude-Maurice who had his shot blocked for a corner
Karlsruhe got a penalty due to a foul on Schleusener.
This penalty was taken by KSC captain Marvin Wanitzek who was only able to watch as Augsburg keeper Dahmen saved the centrally placed shot
Augsburg opened the score with an Essende header into the corner of the net
Karlsruhe pressed more and put more resources into finding an equalizer.
KSC's Schleusener netted thanks to a deflected cross which fell into his path
Marvin Wanitzek shot from his free kick but was unable to trouble Dahmen
The last few minutes of normal time belonged to Karlsruhe as they applied a lot of pressure in hope of getting a winner
KSC's Burnic nearly managed to score with an acrobatic effort but failed.
Karlsruhe finally got the lead as they left Augsburg's defence in disarray thanks to an error they made
It was Budu Zivzivadze who fought to keep the ball in play and passed it onto Marvin Wanitzek who finally got his goal
the game was not over as late on Karlsruhe failed to clear and Ruben Vargas was left free to tap the ball in from a free kick in the 124th minute
all of the penalty takers from both sides scored until Karlsruhe's fifth penalty taker Heußer had his shot saved by Dahmen
Bauer made on mistake in sending Augsburg to the quarter-finals.
In Germany Fanprojekte play a crucial social-work role with football fans but a court case in Karlsruhe is threatening their existence
this winter’s festivities are in full swing
crackling December day and Karlsruhe’s ultras have set up their version of a Christmas market
Warm glühwein may be the best bet in conditions such as these but one of their number has also brought a portable outpost of the brewery that he runs
Further along, children are served pancakes; anyone needing to augment their colours before the match against second-tier promotion rivals Hamburg can buy scarves or hats
The game is important but the proceeds from these stalls
which will go to local organisations supporting refugees
“I never accepted that this could happen,” she says. Gerschel is a leader of Karlsruhe’s Fanprojekt, a body that has few parallels elsewhere in Europe
essentially aimed at helping younger fans deal with problems that may arise around football stadiums or in broader life
On the ground Fanprojekte assist supporters in avoiding conflict or misunderstanding with police and
They tend to be funded by a mixture of local government and German football’s ruling powers
Their work is regarded as both educational and preventative: helping steer people away from hooliganism
extremism or drugs while empowering individuals to carve their own path
In late October Gerschel and two colleagues were fined
by Karlsruhe district court in a case that has turned heads beyond football
They had refused to give evidence to an investigation into supporters from the “Rheinfire Karlsruhe” group who set off pyrotechnics at a home game with St Pauli in November 2022
It was not a matter of seeking to protect wrongdoers; it was about safeguarding their own work
and the trust it requires between social workers and individuals

we need to talk and find a solution.’ We can do this but the police and the club cannot
It needs social work to connect and interpret.”
The defence team in Gerschel’s case pointed out that the police already had the names of potential perpetrators
and that nobody knew for sure who the ringleaders were because they were masked
No relevant information was being withheld
The Karlsruhe Fanprojekt was backed afterwards by the club and Germany’s football association
It shows this was not an example of apologising for criminals
At stake is a core element of German football’s social contract
Gerschel’s equivalent at the Hamburg Fanprojekt
sits at a table with her in an office next to the stadium
A distant cheer is audible from inside; Hamburg have taken the lead through Jean-Luc Dompé and the vibrant home crowd
Schmieder will not end up watching any of the match because he and his colleagues must arrange emergency blankets for visiting fans making the nine-hour journey home on a special train service
The heating in one of the carriages has broken and temperatures will near freezing point inside
“They have taken a bullet for all Fanprojekte,” Schmieder says of Gerschel and the Karlsruhe setup
it would probably have ended relations between us and the ultras in Hamburg
They’ve taken all these risks in their personal lives
He explains some of the practical issues the precedent set by Karlsruhe’s court
“People would still talk to us superficially but
they would ask us to not be on the same train today,” he says
think we will win or lose?’ But they would never come and talk about the kind of issue that would make a difference to them
Even if they knew I didn’t want to betray them
This is already being felt by Gerschel and the fans who hold her in such high esteem
the Karlsruhe Fanprojekt has stopped travelling on buses to away games with the ultras
“When you are driving nine or 10 hours to Rostock and back there is a lot of time to talk
to listen to what is happening in their lives
to see can we help or if they want help,” she says

It was echoed by banners and chants across Germany’s stadiums in early November
“Social workers are not criminals,” read a standard in Bochum; the Hamburg fans unfurled another reading: “Solidarity with the Karlsruhe Fanprojekt!” The support is not unnoticed
“But we have to do it and we don’t do it alone.”

The Karlsruhe version has existed since 1989
the head of the national Fanprojekt coordination office (KOS)
says he has detected worrying wider ramifications
“The case shows a weak point in legislation and it’s becoming very obvious,” he says
“It seems the police and state attorney do not care enough about social work
we realised it is an opportunity to bring this issue to the public and discuss the legislation
We’ve had colleagues leave their positions because they don’t want to get in this kind of situation
more people are asking what support we can provide for their safety.”
KOS is among the bodies to have applied long-term pressure for a rethink of the law
or at least if Gerschel and company do not win their appeal in Karlsruhe
Hamburg’s fans depart merrily with a 3-1 win
Gerschel makes another appearance at the pop-up market
Even if the nature of their relationship has been put under question
the admiration of Karlsruhe’s ultras has only grown since the Fanprojekt stood its ground
“We will have to wait months to go to the courts again,” she says

It is a legitimate question: While renewable diesel comes with clear benefits with regards to GHG emissions when all the emissions over the fuel’s life cycle are compared to fossil diesel
it also has slightly different chemical characteristics
when it comes to energy density or cetane number
While it has been used in other countries for several years already
a consortium of three parties – car manufacturer Porsche
renewable diesel producer Neste and researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – made it their task to provide a definitive and detailed answer
Further project members were Müller – Die lila Logistik
So in 2020, the parties put on their detective hats to take a closer look at the issue. The following is a summary of a more comprehensive article published in Automotive and Engine Technology in 20241:
Image: Neste MY Renewable Diesel burns cleaner than fossil diesel
But does that affect its operational efficiency
An endurance run featuring up to 12 trucks running on 100% Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ (HVO100) was kicked off
with each truck having a twin truck running on conventional fossil diesel
The goal was to look at real-life conditions with existing traffic and infrastructure use instead of the comforting warmth of a laboratory
For the mix of new and used Scania and MAN 40t lowliner trucks
three different routes in the supply chains of Porsche’s site in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen were picked – manufacturing site for Porsche’s sports cars and the electric Porsche Taycan:
An overland journey of 85km with no highway sections at all
A short-haul city route of 10km through urban traffic
overland route and short-term haul city route
To supply the trucks running on renewable diesel
Neste’s distribution partners EDi Hohenlohe and TOOL-FUEL provided a mobile 5,000 liter filling station
which was located at the site of Müller – Die lila Logistik in Ottmarsheim
The twin trucks not running on renewable diesel were fueled with conventional B7 diesel
One expectation was a higher consumption of the trucks running on renewable diesel due to the lower energy density of the fuel
The project team was in for a surprise though: In fact
the trucks running on renewable diesel ended up with a slightly lower fuel consumption than those running on B7 diesel – meaning that the expected additional volumetric consumption of fuel is too small to be measured
The fact that the exact opposite happened – lower consumption for the renewable diesel powered trucks – was attributed to a change in the behavior of the drivers who knew that they were driving on a more sustainable fuel and may thus have driven more consciously
Graphic: Monthly consumption of a test pair of trucks named “Alfons” and “Anna”
with “Alfons” powered by renewable diesel and “Anna” by B7 diesel
Analyses also focused on the oil of the trucks as a permanent sensor of changes in combustion
The oil analysis showed no indication of fuel-related differences
No increase in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions below measurement limit
the endurance test confirmed that using renewable diesel is a tool for significant greenhouse gas emissions without negative effects on other parameters
which may also be the reason why the largest manufacturers of heavy commercial vehicles
DAF and MAN have already approved renewable diesel in neat form for use

Olympic shot put champion Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany will take on two-time world champion Chase Jackson and world indoor champion Sarah Mitton at the INIT Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe – a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold fixture – on 7 February.
The last time the three women met indoors was at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow. Mitton emerged victorious on that occasion while Yemisi threw a PB of 20.19m to take a surprise silver ahead of Jackson.
Ogunleye went on to spring another surprise at the Olympic Games in Paris, taking gold with an outdoor PB of 20.00m. Jackson missed out on making the final while Mitton placed 12th, but both women rebounded after, Jackson throwing a season’s best of 20.64m in Lausanne and Mitton winning the Diamond League Final.
Two-time world champion Malaika Mihambo is also set to compete in Karlsruhe. The 2021 Olympic champion will take on compatriot Mikaelle Assani, who placed fourth at the World Indoor Championships last year.
In the pole vault, European champion Angelica Moser will take on two-time European indoor silver medallist Tina Sutej and Olympic finalist Elisa Molinarolo of Italy.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 60m hurdles 2022 European champion Asier Martinez will clash with France’s 2021 European indoor champion Wilhem Belocian and two-time German champion Manuel Mordi.

1. FC Kaiserslautern beat southwest Germany rival Karlsruher SC 3-1 Saturday afternoon, for its third win in a row.
The Red Devils got on the board in the 13th minute on a penalty by Boris Tomiak after Luca Sirch was fouled by Karlsruhe’s Enis Zengin.
The two teams traded chances to score in front of 48,567 spectators at Fritz Walter Stadium, with KSC getting a goal called back for offsides.
Karlsruhe had the first scoring opportunity in the 57th minute but Marcel Franke couldn’t net a cross.
Both coaches substituted a number of players midway through the half, with Kaiserslautern’s Markus Anfang having the luckier hand.
Three minutes after coming on the field, Kenny Prince Redondo put the Red Devils up 2-0 when he converted a Sirch pass in the 73 minute.
FCK scored again three minutes later when another substitute, Jannis Heuer knocked a Florian Kleinhansl free kick into the net.
Karlsruhe scored in the 88th minute on a beautiful free kick by Marvin Wanitzek, but the Red Devils sent their fans home happy with the 3-1 win.
The victory moves FCK back up to second place in the second division table, with 26 points. KSC dropped to sixth with 23 points.
In the Sunday games, only Hamburg, who plays Darmstadt, can pass the Red Devils in the standings.
Next week Kaiserslautern travels to Darmstadt for the Saturday night game at 8:30 p.m.
The Red Devils close out the first half of the season at Fritz Walter Stadium on Dec. 22 against Cologne.

“Communication is key when it comes to accessing anything,” says Anwer Dheyaa Mhmood at the start of the online event
When he decided a few years ago that he would like to go to Germany to obtain his master's degree in civil engineering
it was clear for him right from the start that he would need very good language skills to be able to communicate in his new home
This was why he started to study German on his own in 2020, alongside his full-time job as a project manager. He mostly used free learning materials for this, such as the app
as I learned not only the language but got an insight into German culture
The participants were very impressed that he reached language skills at B2 level within eleven months
thanks to hard and disciplined work and a talent for language learning
where he obtained a bachelor’s degree at Diyala University before working for an Iraqi partner company of Siemens in Baghdad for three years
It was by coincidence that he came across the Horizonte programme
a project of the Goethe Institute that is dedicated to establishing contact between German companies and experienced academics from Iraq
the civil engineer was able to take part in a number of online courses on topics such as “telecommuting”
“intercultural training” and “time and self-management”
He also took classes in to broaden his language skills to include the professional context
“Taking part in this programme helped me immensely to get closer to my goal to settle down in Germany,” the 28-year-old explains
It also contributed to his decision to postpone his master's degree and get a job right away
When asked why he chose Germany in particular
he says: “Germany is leading in the construction sector
and many interesting large-scale projects are realised there.”
we offer you a wide range of free language learning opportunities to help you improve your skills effectively
lively conversation lessons and other offers to improve your German language skills
Anwer Dheyaa Mhmood soon came across various job openings
it was on a German Facebook group for civil engineers that he ultimately found the most important information
He quickly engaged in lively discussion with others who suggested some available jobs
He was even able to publish the link to his research report that he had prepared based on his bachelor’s thesis
“This was how I was invited to three job interviews,” he says
but he soon realised that he would not be able to use his expertise on BIM that he had gained during his studies at this engineering firm
BIM is short for Building Information Modelling and is used in large-scale construction projects to optimise planning
This was why he moved on to Deutsche Bahn in Karlsruhe after seven months
His friend who was already an employee there had recommended him for the job
Anwer Dheyaa Mhmood prepared for this interview very diligently
He sought detailed information about his potential employer’s projects and thought about answers to questions he might be asked
Soon after the interview he was offered the job
and he is glad that he took this step: “I am able to gain worthwhile experience and I have good career prospects,” he says
Discover numerous current job advertisements and vacancies that are of particular interest to international Germany alumni in our community job board
Anwer Dheyaa Mhmood is very happy with his new life in Germany: he was able to quickly establish himself professionally
In February 2025 he will get his permanent residence permit that will open up a wide range of perspectives for living in Germany for an unlimited time
He currently lives in a studio apartment that he found through the online platform WG-gesucht
he would also like to have some German friends
His master’s studies that had been his original reason for coming to Germany
and that he would still like to take up soon alongside his job
could be an opportunity for meeting new people
it is also important for Anwer Dheyaa Mhmood to stay in touch with people in his home country Iraq
He travels back home twice a year and uses all of his annual leave for these visits

CLUSTER international university network recently gathered at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
which is celebrating its 200th anniversary
the delegation from Politecnico di Torino - currently chairing the network - coordinated the meetings of the governing bodies and working groups
confirming Politecnico's long-stanting proactive role in defining the network's future strategies
One of the most significant recent developments was the revamping of the Sino-European Engineering Education Platform (SEEEP)
an initiative launched by CLUSTER 15 years ago
This platform involves a group of some of the top Chinese technical universities
including four that are ranked in the top 50 and one that is in the top 10 according to the QS ranking
a new communication strategy has been launched
which includes updating the website and enhancing social media channels to strengthen CLUSTER's visibility and international impact
The highlight of the plenary session was the workshop “CLUSTER: a network to coordinate international opportunities,” during which Secretary General Roberto Zanino chaired a round table discussion with representatives of the six European University Alliances involved in the network
The discussion highlighted the potential of CLUSTER as a platform for dialogue and exchange between the Alliances
and co-designing common tools and initiatives
such as the cooperation with sub-Saharan Africa
introduced by INP Grenoble's Vice President for International Relations
and the prospects for collaboration with China
“The event at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology provided the CLUSTER network with an opportunity to discuss a critical issue: its added value compared to the European University Alliances
particularly the 7 that are part of Unite!
The lively debate among participants highlighted that the trust built among CLUSTER partners over more than 30 years serves as a fundamental asset
it was emphasized that CLUSTER serves as an excellent platform for sharing experiences among partners in their respective Alliances and
for developing collaborative projects among these Alliances
This has already been demonstrated through initiatives like the AupaEU project
CLUSTER is focused on internationalization efforts beyond the borders of the EU
specifically targeting sub-Saharan Africa and China—regions identified as priorities by the Politecnico's presidency—with a continued emphasis on Science and Technology”
the next upcoming meeting of the Steering Committee and the working groups was also announced
to be held at the end of October 2025 at Trinity College Dublin

Sodium-ion batteries have several advantages over conventional batteries
They contain no critical raw materials such as lithium or cobalt - and could make stationary energy storage and electromobility much more cost-effective
There is still a lack of the necessary energy storage materials for production
The young company Litona wants to change that
The start-up founded at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) now wants to produce the batteries on an industrial scale
The so-called Prussian white (a chemical relative of the colour Prussian blue) is essentially based on sodium
"It can be used as an energy storage material at the cathode
the positive pole of a sodium-ion battery," says Sebastian Büchele from the Institute for Applied Materials at KIT and founder of Litona
Such batteries are more cost-effective and all the raw materials they contain are widely available
"I am convinced that we will soon be able to use them en masse in electric vehicles and grid storage systems," says Büchele
The European industry is facing a major problem here
"It is currently difficult even for research institutions to procure sufficient quantities of Prussian white," says the scientist
This is extremely slowing down research and transfer of the pioneering sodium-ion technology
See also: Getting sodium-ion batteries using sustainable raw materials to market
As Büchele also wanted to research sodium-ion technology
he decided to synthesise Prussian white himself
This work not only produced a high-quality cathode material at KIT
but also an innovative process for its production
This is why he founded the start-up Litona together with chemist Tom Bötticher
"Competitors were having problems scaling up the production of Prussian white analogues," says Büchele
He is optimistic that the company has solved this
Litona used the KIT infrastructure to validate the scaling steps and optimise the material for use in next-generation batteries
the two founders are already working on setting up their own state-of-the-art production facility
"We deliberately chose Germany as a location," emphasises co-founder Bötticher
The founders believe in the potential of European battery production
Sodium-ion technology is now a huge opportunity for a new start in Europe
"We don't just want to sit back and watch." (nhp/mfo)

Ethel Smyth's The Wreckers has a fascinatingly international history, the work was written to a French libretto by a France-based American, premiered in German translation in Leipzig. For more background see my 2016 article celebrating The Wreckers at 110, and my 2023 article
More recently, the opera has been catching attention, most notably in productions at Glyndebourne in 2022 [see my review
the premiere of the original French version] and Houston Grand Opera
The Wreckers seems to be returning to Germany and there are three different productions during the seasons
each one uses a slightly different version of the opera
There are performances of The Wreckers in Karlsruhe through November and December, and Keith Warner's production looks worth catching, see the theatre's website for details
This premiere would be fascinating enough, and Karlsruhe has a history with rediscovering works, their production of Meyerbeer's Le Prophète in 2015, directed by Tobias Kratzer, was notable [see the review in Forum Opera]
But what is even more fascinating is that this season
there are two further productions of Smyth's opera in Germany
but both using different versions of the opera
On 7 February 2025, the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater in Schwerin will be performing Smyth's Strandrecht in German in a production directed by Daniela Kerck and conducted by Mark Rohde. This seems to be a performance of the 1909 version of the opera. There are performances of Strandrecht in Schwerin through to May 2025, see the theatre's website for details.
