Tropical fruit and vegetables are becoming increasingly popular
JJ Global Trader Ltd has been one of the specialist providers of unusual air freight products from all over the world
we spoke to company founder and Managing Director Jasvir Singh Jeer
his wife Parminder Jeer and his daughter Sharon Jeer about the development of the Kelsterbach-based family business and the further growth potential in the exotic category
High growth potential for okra and mangoesJJ Global Trader Ltd is primarily dedicated to the procurement and marketing of exotic foods
In addition to produce flown in from India and Pakistan
the broad-based portfolio now also includes products from Kenya
we have developed into one of the main importers of okra in the Rhine-Main region and load up to 25 tonnes a week
We have noticed that this product continues to gain in importance
but also in other European countries such as Luxembourg
the Czech Republic and Poland," says Parminder Jeer
Okra is becoming increasingly popular in north-west Europe and is currently sourced from India
Demand is sometimes 30 per cent higher than last year
mangoes from Pakistan and India are also becoming increasingly popular
Jeer: "These are unusual varieties such as Sindhri
Our main customers also include wholesale customers from Belgium
who redistribute the goods in their respective delivery areas." Indian mangoes are usually in season from the end of April to August
while Pakistani produce is mainly available between the end of May and the beginning of September
Sharon Jeer is the daughter of the founding couple and has been responsible for the webshop for end consumers and private customers called JJGT for several years
Pictured: Sindhri mangoes from Pakistan are sold under the private label
Lack of space and staff Due to the company's strong growth in recent years
JJ Global Trader has now outgrown its site
"In order to further expand the wholesale business and the online shop
We would therefore like to relocate in the near future
the basic requirement is a direct connection to Frankfurt Airport
as our direct imports arrive here." Another challenge is finding sufficient staff
it is still feasible to find new employees."
Insight into JJ Global Trader's wide range of exotic products: from left to right: jackfruit
Freight charges vary greatly depending on the source country
Freight rates in East Asian countries are generally much higher compared to other sources

Lufthansa is getting out of the IT business
in a deal whereby IBM will buy the German airline's infrastructure business and takes over its in-house IT
Running IT and selling IT services is not an airline's core business
leading to the break-up of its systems integration business
Outsourcing its internal IT to IBM will save the company €70 million per year
Lufthansa’s IT infrastructure division has bout 450 customers
and provides data centers and networking for companies mostly in the global aviation industry
Lufthansa will incur a €240m one-time charge to seal the deal due to restructuring and effects from the purchase price in the financial year 2014
Lufthansa Systems will be split into three companies
and its Airline Solutions and Industry Solutions divisions will become independent companies
pending the approval of the Lufthansa Supervisory Board and the antitrust authorities
Deutsche Lufthansa AG CFO and member of the executive board and Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Systems AG Simone Menne said: “the cooperation with a global and successful IT group like IBM will strengthen the competitiveness of the Group companies and the Lufthansa Group as a whole
It will directly improve our cost base and allows access to the latest IT technologies which we will use to continue digitizing our business processes in order to increase efficiency and customer focus.”
The split-up of Lufthansa Systems and formal launch of the new companies are due to take place in Q1 2015 and the completion of the infrastructure sale is planned for March 31
It has not been disclosed how much the deal is worth

Fruit via air freight is increasingly being criticised these days
which is why some food retail chains stop having fruit flown in
and the like continue to enjoy unbroken high demand from quality-conscious European consumers
exotic fruit importer and Managing Director of HLB Tropical Food GmbH
To mark the 35th anniversary of the family business
FreshPlaza travelled to Kelsterbach to talk about the opportunities and challenges of importing exotics
The father of the current Managing Director started out by importing tree-ripened tropical fruits
the growing company moved into a new location including cold storage space in Kelsterbach
in the immediate vicinity of Frankfurt Airport
so that the goods arriving by air could be picked and distributed as quickly as possible
we haven't been working with Golden Papayas
The latter variety is characterised by its firm
This eating quality was also particularly important to us
We want to offer the consumer a great experience to incentivise repeat purchases
So it's a matter close to my heart to bring something exciting here," says Hartmann de Barros
Lorenz Hartmann de Barros has been at the helm of HLB Tropical Food GmbH as Managing Director for five years now and is the second generation to run the company
The company supplies the European markets (including Germany
and the Netherlands) either directly by 'dropship' or from the warehouse in Kelsterbach
the ability to deliver all year round is almost a basic requirement today
we have the advantage that we can source them from Brazil 12 months a year
and procure our exotic fruits from different countries depending on the time of year
We are very critical of our producers and regularly visit them to enquire about important issues such as quality management and residue analysis
This is the only way we can guarantee continuous
HLB has set new standards on the exotic fruit shelf
The flavoursome fruit is sourced exclusively from selected
Freight rates have recently normalised again and are now close to pre-corona levels
High demand for fruit exoticsAs part of the increasing awareness of sustainability
several leading retail chains are already trying to reduce the proportion of airfreight
this has already led to a situation where there are hardly any ripe exotics
we are constantly receiving enquiries from consumers who would like to buy our tree-ripened papayas
This means that there is still a demand for air exotics
Air freight does not necessarily have a larger carbon footprint compared to sea transport: In practice
these are passenger flights that are topped up with fruit
So we fill the flight so that it doesn't fly empty
which unfortunately is often not taken into account
we now only use cardboard boxes without lids so that we can save on packaging material and make optimum use of the available storage space
the reduction in purchasing power due to inflation is often cited as an inhibiting factor for the exotic market
"True to the motto 'Trust is our currency'
it is extremely important to offer exciting goods with good flavour
Only when we show customers that we have a personal passion for the product and stand behind our fruit can we create a certain level of trust
we also approach customers proactively by advising them on the organisation of promotions and informing them at the end how the campaign has gone
people have been travelling via their palates
which continues to benefit sales of exotic products
Papaya as a promotional productWith the start of school and autumn
it is again a good time to run promotions and offer the goods at affordable prices
"There are currently similar promotions for other exotic fruits
We are also noticing that producers are particularly willing to export
They are reluctant to sit on their produce
as it is difficult to sell the entire volume on the local market and the prices are much more attractive when exporting
the price level remains almost constant throughout the year
which is ultimately in the interests of all those involved," he concludes
Lorenz Hartmann de Barros at this year's Fruit Logistica
where the company exhibited together with its American colleagues from HLB Specialties LLC
the wide-ranging portfolio includes rambutan

If the political backdrop were not so deadly serious
But Erdoğan’s rude push to take partisan campaigning in Turkey’s fraught 16 April referendum on expanded presidential powers to the doorsteps of western Europe’s four-million-strong Turkish diaspora is no laughing matter
It has sparked an all-out crisis in Turkey-Europe relations that had been threatening to erupt for years
When the Dutch banned unsanctioned ministerial rallies and cracked down on Turkish demonstrators, Erdoğan denounced them as modern-day Nazis. When Germany, where 1.4 million ethnic Turks have a vote in Erdoğan’s referendum, took a similar stance, he accused Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, of Islamophobia and harbouring terrorists
which also have sizeable Turkish minorities
This jagged, ugly confrontation should come as no surprise. It has long been simmering, in particular since elections in 2015 when Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) unexpectedly lost its parliamentary majority
The pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic party (HDP) made historic gains
winning seats for the first time – a result enthusiastically welcomed by EU countries
It is cynically perpetuated by Erdoğan to bolster his claim that only he and the AKP can save Turkey from “terrorists” and foreign co-conspirators
But he also lambasted Europe for being too slow to support him and too quick to criticise post-coup repression
Trump-like “for us or against us” tactics in the run-up to the referendum
denouncing the HDP and other opposition parties as terrorist sympathisers
arresting their leaders and detaining and persecuting independent civil servants
Europe and the EU have become his preferred whipping boy
Turkey and the Netherlands clash over campaign access GuardianErdoğan taunted “Christian Europe” again last Thursday while campaigning in Sakarya
condemning the European Court of Justice’s ruling that allows companies to ban staff wearing “visible religious symbols” such as head scarves
“Where is the liberty of religion?” he demanded
“They have commenced a struggle between the cross and crescent … I am saying this clearly: Europe is heading towards the days just before the second world war.”
Rhetoric and schadenfreude aside, the causes of Turkish anger are deep-seated and not wholly unjustified. Erdoğan has repeatedly complained that Turkey’s longstanding EU membership bid, now widely viewed as dead in the water, was, in effect, humiliatingly blocked by France and Germany a decade ago
He now says Turkey does not need the EU anyway
Erdoğan is incensed that visa-free travel for Turks in Europe has not materialised
despite promises made in a deal with Merkel in 2015 on halting Syrian refugee flows
Turkey’s interior minister rejected a more limited readmission arrangement and challenged the EU to face the consequences of scrapping the refugee pact
we’ll send the 15,000 refugees to you that we don’t send each month and blow your mind,” Süleyman Soylu said
Erdoğan’s grievances include European criticism of human rights abuses
including the detention of a journalist working for the German newspaper
with next month’s referendum result expected to be close
Erdoğan is reaching indiscriminately for any ammunition he can find to boost his hardline nationalist-chauvinist-conspiracy narrative
The view from the other side of the Europe-Turkey confrontation is unedifying
weakened by eurozone crises and alarmed by neo-populist forces that threaten the centrist establishment in coming elections in France and Germany
the European commission and principal EU members are poorly placed to resist the challenges presented by a tough
the Europeans condescended to or ignored Ankara in the complacent belief that Turkey
a developing country and Nato member with a secular
needed the EU more than the other way around
Erdoğan is closer to Vladimir Putin than he is to Merkel (or Trump)
Erdoğan is allied with the Russians and Iran and at odds with the US over its backing for Syria’s Kurds
his race and religion-based messages invite a response in kind from Europe’s hard-right extremists and demagogues
for whom such divisions are grist to the mill
Responding to Erdoğan and his ministers last week, Merkel and François Hollande, the French president, said their insults were unacceptable and must cease
Given their neediness over refugees and counter-terrorism
they have few options by way of retaliation
Europe has lost the initiative and the upper hand it took for granted for so long
foreign minister Çavuşoğlu crowed last week
for one simple reason: “It is Turkey that commands.” Such claims overstate the case
But there is no denying the forces of xenophobic
are once again at the gates of Europe – and
nobody has yet produced a convincing riposte
Erdoğan, right, has staked everything on winning the referendum. His supporters say that, when Turkey is at increased risk of terrorist attacks, the new system will streamline decision-making and give greater stability. Opponents fear it will usher in an era of authoritarian one-man rule when judicial independence and press freedom have already been curtailed.

Kelsterbach, May 14, 2014 – Lufthansa Systems today announced that US-based Trans States Holdings has opted for its Integrated Operations Control Center (IOCC) Platform. This will enable the holding company to optimize its airlines’ operations while achieving significant cost savings at the same time. The IOCC Platform is the first integrated, modular IT platform for monitoring and controlling all of an airline’s operating processes across departmental boundaries.
Trans States Holdings owns and operates three regional airlines – GoJet, Compass Airlines and Trans States Airlines – with a regional jet fleet of 120 short- and medium-haul aircraft. The three airlines provide domestic feeder flights for Delta Air Lines, US Airways and United.
The 10-year contract covers the use of the IOCC Platform with the Lido/Flight, NetLine/OPS++ and NetLine/Crew components. Trans States Holdings’ airlines will be the first American passenger airlines to use these IOCC components. Lufthansa Systems will operate the system in its data centers as an Application Service Providing (ASP) model.
Stefan Auerbach, Executive Vice President Airline Solutions at Lufthansa Systems, said, “We are delighted that Trans States Holdings is the first group of American passenger airlines to have opted for the IOCC Platform. Our concept of modular components that can be added as needed has proven itself once again. With the IOCC, Trans States Holdings will be able to expand its market leadership in the US and maximize its revenues.”
Lido/Flight is a leading IT solution for flight path planning. It enables airlines to optimize their route planning in terms of flying time, costs and fuel consumption. By choosing the ideal routes, Trans States Holding can lower fuel consumption by up to five percent. Especially in case of disruptions due to bad weather or congested airspace, Lido/Flight quickly enables dispatchers to get an overview of the entire situation.
The NetLine/Ops++ component is a powerful system that monitors daily flight activities, automatically identifies and analyzes schedule deviations and gives controllers enough time to make adjustments. The software keeps the costs for the holding company’s airlines and the effects on passengers associated with these disruptions as low as possible by minimizing the number of positioning flights or hotel stays, for example.
Trans States Holdings Inc. is the parent company of three regional airlines, Trans States Airlines, GoJet Airlines and Compass Airlines. With an overall jet fleet of 120 short- and medium-haul aircraft, the airlines of Trans States Holdings operate as Delta Connection, US Airways Express and United Express. The company is headquartered in Bridgeton, Missouri.

Master’s student in clinical neuropsychology Kine Dawit (24) came to the Netherlands at the age of 19 from her home country of Germany
where she grew up in a warm family environment with her Ethiopian relatives
Her bachelor’s degree was a disappointment
I thought: how can I ever get to know this country if I don’t form a connection with the Dutch themselves?’
In the windowsill of a narrow student room in the Korvel district
tea lights flicker in the bleak winter light
Master’s student in clinical neuropsychology Kine Dawit places steaming mugs of tea on the table
as Dawit is in the final phase of her studies
She recently completed her master’s thesis in clinical neuropsychology
investigating the possible link between neural dedifferentiation and the memory and attention problems experienced by people with ADHD
neurons—nerve cells in the brain—develop in such a way that they can perform increasingly specialized tasks,’ she explains
and the function of those nerve cells becomes increasingly general
This process usually occurs at an older age
experience memory problems or have difficulty maintaining their attention
I was curious whether this process also occurs in people with ADHD
why those nerve cells develop in this way.’
Brazilian: internationals from all corners of the world have been moving to the Netherlands for a long time
Science crosses national borders and Dutch universities want to score well on the world academic stage
But a lot of internationals came this way: lecture halls and student houses are overcrowded and many courses are only taught in English
Dawit wrote her thesis in the university library
‘The university library is my second home,’ she says
and it has an open atmosphere.’ That warmth has sometimes been lacking in Tilburg
attracted by the strong job market in the industrial city
She does not want to elaborate on her parents’ relationship issues
‘I found it difficult that my father was no longer around
that we have been such a small part of each other’s lives.’
Even though her father lived on the other side of the world
‘There was always someone at home to play with or help me with something.’ Her mother worked long hours
‘She had her own cleaning business and her own jewelry shop
which is remarkable considering she came to Germany from Ethiopia with nothing and built everything herself.’
Dawit and her family moved from home to home
‘Sometimes because the house was being demolished
other times because we didn’t have enough space or because the rent was too high
At night I had nightmares and would crawl back into bed with my aunt
‘A collective upbringing means that everyone has something to say about your life—or at least they think they do
which sometimes makes me unsure of what I truly want
I had to learn to filter out the useful advice and ignore the rest.’
but not because I’m being pressured into it.’
‘I burn one every day to feel calmer.’ On the mirror above the sink
a Bible verse is written in white marker: ‘The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.’ She has needed this encouraging verse over the past year
‘I felt I wasn’t performing well enough in my studies
and I was in a relationship with someone who made me feel like I wasn’t good enough
I think it was mainly because I was far away from my family and loved ones
Ethiopian food is so strongly tied to a sense of community for me that if I eat it alone
rummages through one of the full bags hanging from hooks on the wall
I spread the academic year over two years because I didn’t want to rush through it; I wanted to truly delve into the research.’
you can only do that if you score straight A’s
I chose it out of convenience; it wasn’t that I specifically wanted to go to Tilburg.’
I chose psychology to better understand myself and my family
I’ve always been curious about how people influence each other and the role culture plays in that because I’ve always felt like I lived in two worlds
at home we spoke Amharic and I was raised with Ethiopian values
which were very different from what I saw among my friends and classmates
Taking care of each other is deeply ingrained; the idea of splitting small costs via payment requests doesn’t exist in Ethiopia
I find it fascinating that people living in the same environment can think so differently
I wondered: why is it such a huge issue for my family if I come home late
while my friends’ parents don’t care at all
I didn’t even realize this was an issue until I left for Tilburg and my family asked
‘Why are you going so far away?’ I thought: huh
I’m just doing what all my friends are doing
I wasn’t aware of cultural differences until I crossed that boundary.’
I wanted to do my own thing without having to constantly justify myself.’ Dawit smiles
‘But now that I’ve been here for a few years
I actually miss having people around who care about what I do
Everything I wanted to distance myself from
whereas my family expects me to move back in with my mother after I finish my studies
but it wasn’t available until a month after my studies had already started.’ Dawit bursts out laughing
‘I remember my mother taking me to the Central Station
where she started approaching every Ethiopian she saw
can my daughter stay with you for a month?” So embarrassing
we met an Ethiopian girl in her early twenties who let me stay with her temporarily
‘When we Ethiopians meet each other on the street
“Salaam!” When I had just started studying here
screaming with excitement because she was so happy to see another Ethiopian
because their generation is so different from ours
yet there are so many things we can’t share with them
and she told me: “I could never tell my parents
‘Many staff members offered to help me find my way around the university
But I didn’t feel very welcome among Dutch students
My Dutch classmates had this attitude of: we have enough friends already
they wouldn’t stay to chat or grab a coffee
they just weren’t interested in socializing
‘We gave up a lot to come to the Netherlands from all over the world
I had two close friends who happened to also be from Germany
It felt like I was still in Germany because we always spoke German among ourselves
‘I haven’t seen much of the Netherlands because international students don’t get a free public transport card
I thought: don’t you want me to explore the country
Am I supposed to just walk in circles around my front door
I thought: how can I ever get to know this country if I don’t connect with the Dutch people
Kine stands up and makes fresh tea in the kitchen she shares with two Turkish students
She has only lived here for a month but already feels more at home than in her previous three student houses
‘We do groceries together and go out together
We share food and do the dishes for each other
Some landlords would just walk in without knocking or take advantage of the fact that I didn’t know my rights very well
I sometimes paid too much rent or got evicted before my contract ended
The attitude was: be grateful you even have a place to stay
I kept seeing the words ‘Dutch only’ in listings
I understand that a house full of Dutch students might prefer to add another Dutch person
Tilburg is nothing more than a stop on the way to something better
I find Dutch people much friendlier and more open than Germans
The Dutch customer service is also very good
I was welcomed warmly at the police station
victim support called me: “We heard there was a break-in at your place
‘The African Student Association organizes parties and events where everyone brings food
They try to support African students who are struggling
But we have to fight for our space at the university
Other student associations have it easier because they’ve been here for a long time and speak the language
That makes it harder to keep our group going
even though we need the support the most.’
It’s nice to have that community and to share food and music with people who understand your culture
I’m expected to help raise family members and think about how I can improve their lives
I can’t share that with my Dutch friends because they are only responsible for themselves
They don’t mind asking their parents for money
I wouldn’t do that so easily because my family already struggles enough.’
you’re expected to go straight home after school instead of hanging out with friends
I don’t even hold my boyfriend’s hand at home.’
‘I see it as a form of respect to hold myself back around family
but I find it difficult that I cannot date in public because it’s expected that I wait for sex until marriage
and that I have only one partner for my entire life
But a great partner doesn’t just fall out of the sky
‘Most Ethiopian women only tell their families they have a boyfriend when they’re sure they want to marry him
Everyone secretly tries out different relationships
but as soon as that doesn’t work out I can say: sorry
My best friends were Iranian and Chinese; there are many Turkish people in Germany
I remember a classmate in kindergarten once said I couldn’t play with him and his friends because I was Black—even though he himself was Turkish
I became more aware of the way others looked at me
I sometimes worked in my mother’s jewelry store
Often they would exclaim in surprise: ‘Your German is so good!’ When I explained that I had gone to school in Germany
so you can also read and write German?’ Uh
yes—the vast majority of German schools offer language classes
I usually just joked by saying: ‘Your German is excellent in its own way.’
‘I’m lucky that my mother always made it clear that she doesn’t see herself as a stranger who doesn’t belong
But many African friends my age feel excluded in Germany because they are seen as ‘the other.’ I never really had that problem; at the grammar school in Mainz
it was even cool to be Black—even if that is a bit dubious
When people were curious about my hair or my culture
Dawit went back home and continued her studies online
‘It was a scary time; I wanted to be close to my family.’ After finishing her bachelor’s
she took a gap year and spent six months living with her grandmother in Ethiopia
where she had spent a year when she was seven
but in Germany I felt a bit cut off from my roots
Sometimes I felt alienated in my own family
I heard all the information secondhand and couldn’t reflect on it on the same level
‘Spending some time with my grandmother made me feel more deeply connected to my heritage
I discovered that it isn’t about your skin color
Identity isn’t a single thing—it’s the sum of your experiences
‘I noticed that in Ethiopia I was more relaxed
It feels like I can be more of a human being there and be accepted for who I am
whereas in the Netherlands and Germany I’m always conscious of how I present myself.’
‘I have the impression that in Germany and the Netherlands
because I essentially represent more than just myself
It’s as if one wrong step on my part immediately affects the entire Black community
Germany has become increasingly multicultural since the 1990s
I was often the only Black girl in many places—people paid extra attention to me
so I made sure not to stand out any further
‘I sometimes feel jealous when I see immigrants of color who behave loudly and casually
I’m slowly trying to allow that freer side of myself and be more true to who I am
without worrying about what others think.’
‘I wanted to study clinical psychology in Frankfurt or Cologne
I had become interested in positive psychology—a new field at the time that was only taught in the United Kingdom and in Tilburg
and in Tilburg the admission process was much easier for alumni
‘Classical psychology focuses on what goes wrong in life
and how to make someone with an unhealthy mind healthy
Positive psychology looks at what goes right and how that can be stimulated
What does someone need to lead a good life
Both on a personal level and within a community
but you can also help companies create a healthy work environment or advise schools on setting up a good learning space.’
Enthusiastically: ‘My master’s changed my view of the Netherlands and Tilburg
especially through my positive psychology internship
The company where I interned works with children and students from vulnerable neighborhoods
They wanted to know what their approach did for the wellbeing of that group
‘I had a great exchange with the owners of the company—I shared my scientific knowledge with them
and they introduced me to the cultural life in Tilburg
I went into the city more often and discovered how lively Tilburg is
even though the city gives off an introverted vibe at first
I got to know more Dutch people and practiced having simple conversations
I switched to clinical neuropsychology because you need a clinical master’s degree to be allowed to treat people as a psychologist.’
I want to see if I can integrate my artistic side into psychology
‘It also seems interesting to me to work as a psychotherapist for Ethiopians in Germany
Many Ethiopians move to Europe for job opportunities
but that comes with all sorts of problems and disappointments
Many people miss their country and their family
My uncles and aunts moved to Germany after their studies
only to find out that their diploma wasn’t recognized
forcing them to take a job that doesn’t bring them satisfaction
I find it sad to see how many people have had to say goodbye to their dreams
you aren’t taken seriously if you don’t speak good German
It’s difficult to express yourself well in a language you don’t fully master
Because I’m multicultural and multilingual
I understand that not everything is as it seems
think Ethiopians are rude because they don’t look you straight in the eye during a conversation
a sign of respect when you don’t know someone well
we don’t quickly share personal matters with strangers
White people—whether they’re Germans or Dutch—are often seen by Africans as meddlesome
even though they often ask questions out of genuine interest
But an African might think: what are you getting involved in
many Germans and Dutch assume that Africans don’t want to talk to you or prefer to be left alone—they just need some time
and don’t be so quick to label someone’s behavior from another culture.’
It is mid-December when I speak with Dawit again
Even her grandmother has permanently moved from Ethiopia
‘We live together with three generations!’ Dawit writes excitedly
she will officially complete her master’s in Tilburg
and afterwards she plans to look for a job in Germany
‘It wasn’t a spontaneous decision,’ she explains
‘but the conclusion of a long process of thought
but I realized that my life would have to start from scratch again—learning a new language
I’d only be putting up barriers for myself
I want to be closer to my family and my boyfriend
and I think I have a better chance of finding work in Germany
So I’m taking the plunge and going to see if a better life awaits me in Germany.’
‘I’m glad I came back and discovered a new side of Tilburg
I would recommend studying here to everyone
but the atmosphere here is more open than in Germany
and the academic advisors and educational coordinators are always there to support and advise you
My thesis supervisor was very kind—I could always count on her for help
All these staff members radiate the message: everyone is different; let’s see what works for you
You can feel that the university truly wants you to succeed.’
I met my best friends here and had my first relationship.’ With a laugh: ‘But I also discovered that there are many things I can do alone that I’d rather not do by myself

We are kind of far away in Germany," admits His Royal Highness Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse, cousin of the Windsors in England and half the royal families in Europe. Indeed, much of his family's extensive property lies in rural areas outside Frankfurt. But Landgrave Moritz recently made the Hesses' extensive collection of art and objects—widely considered the largest and most important in Germany—a little more accessible.
"I wanted to make our museum collections more known to the general public," says the landgrave, who is head of the Hesse family as well as the Hessian House Foundation, an organization that oversees the castle museums, two hotels, the successful Prinz von Hessen winery and several commercial farms. "We want Americans to come and see our palaces, all fully furnished with original paintings, tapestries and our antiques, porcelain and silver," he adds.
The great surprise in this rural setting is the elegance of the interiors, which are filled with a mixture of 18th-century German, English and Russian elements. In the grand salon, for example, the walls are lined with antique German embossed leather, German faience heating stoves and several family portraits, including a fine one by Antoine Pesne, a French-born painter active in Prussia in the first half of the 18th century.
Landgrave Moritz arranged the décor throughout with the help of his friend Federico Forquet, a noted Italian couturier in the 1960s. The seating areas boast early-18th-century German and Dutch furniture, Bohemian chandeliers, Chinese export porcelain and several tall gilded-silver pineapple cups, official gifts to the Hesse family that the Nuremberg City Council commissioned from the goldsmith Hans Petzolt in the early 1600s.
Several rooms have a prettiness reminiscent of an English country house. The grand dining room is lined with gilt-leather walls and Brussels tapestries; the small salon retains its original (and typically German) gold-framed oak paneling; the cozy bedrooms are festooned with chintz, antiques of various periods and dozens of paintings and portraits.
Other spaces are exceptional. One sitting room, for example, is decorated with a suite of Empire furniture designed by Jacob-Desmalter and adorned with ormolu mounts by Thomire. "When Napoleon conquered the left side of the Rhine River, he furnished a castle in Mainz with Jacob-Desmalter furniture," says Markus Miller, the Hesses' private art curator. "After he left, his furniture came to the Hesse family."
Two wood-paneled rooms in the manor house explicitly pay tribute to Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, an arts lover who lived from 1868 to 1937. Ernst Ludwig gave the house new life: He redesigned the park, installing a Japanese garden and a teahouse, and was a great patron of all decorative arts. Described by an English writer as "good looking, excitable, wayward and high spirited," Ernst Ludwig became a proponent of the new Jugendstil, or "youth style," in Germany.
World War I brought to an end most activities at the artists' colony and, ultimately, to German monarchies. Nonetheless, the Hesse family has preserved the work of its ancestors by opening so many of its splendid castles to the public—all filled with the kinds of treasures seen at the Portland museum and the landgrave's private estate.
