Expansion and upgrade of entire location by 2025
Siemens Healthineers will invest about €60 million through 2025 to expand and upgrade its location at Kemnath in Bavaria
The project will also create up to 50 new jobs
The investment will ensure that the strong demand for medical technology products can continue to be met with no impact on quality
Radiotherapy devices from Varian – linear accelerators – will also be manufactured at the location in the future
Siemens Healthineers will set up new production lines for that purpose and upgrade parts of the factory
In-house training at the location will be bolstered by the construction of a new workshop and the acquisition of new software and equipment
the energy systems in all buildings at the location will be upgraded
“Our traditional location in Kemnath will continue to play a key role for our business in the future,” says Michael Braunreuther
Head of the Kemnath location at Siemens Healthineers
“That’s why we’ll continue to invest in this area to support the future growth of the company and secure our leading position on the market
Our long-term plans for the future represent a clear commitment to the Kemnath location.”
The Kemnath plant in the Oberpfalz region was established in 1962
It has grown since then from a purely contract-based manufacturer to a Center of Competence for mechatronics that covers large parts of the Siemens Healthineers product range
The components developed and manufactured in Kemnath include C-arms for angiography systems in addition to tables for MRI units and components for analytical systems used in lab diagnostics
Siemens Healthineers currently employs a workforce of more than 1,200 at the location
It recently invested €13 million in a new logistics facility that began operations in January of this year
Siemens Healthineers will construct a new administration building at the location for about 130 employees
It will include the new training workshop and the new reception area
The building should be able to be operated CO2-neutrally
To enable the manufacture of radiotherapy devices from Varian at Kemnath in the future
a completely new production line will be installed in the production area
Linear accelerators of this type are used in hospitals for the targeted treatment of cancer and are among the most technically innovative accelerator systems on the market
Delivery of the first systems is expected by as early as fall 2022
In addition to acquiring new processing machines
the existing 3D printing Center of Competence will be expanded to cover more space and more devices
This will enable individual metal or plastic components needed for production to be manufactured right on-site
A total of 50 new jobs will be created at the location
many in the areas of development and manufacturing

Varian manufactures Halcyon radiotherapy systems in Germany for the first time
Production of radiotherapy systems at Siemens Healthineers site in Kemnath following successful integration of Varian
manufactures the first Halcyon radiotherapy system at its Kemnath site
Siemens Healthineers built a completely new production line at the plant and expanded its research and development team
these are once again part of the Siemens Healthineers product portfolio
European and US markets are manufactured in Kemnath
The first Halcyon from Kemnath goes to Curavid Radiotherapy and Radiology in Lübeck
Siemens Healthineers announced in February 2022 that it would invest EUR 60 million in the Kemnath production site and create 50 new jobs
The expansion of the production to include radiotherapy devices is part of this investment.
"We want to further expand the production of radiotherapy systems in Kemnath and increase the quantities
We also want to increase the vertical integration of the Halcyon system by producing more individual parts here in the plant," said Michael Braunreuther
head of the Kemnath site at Siemens Healthineers
"The expansion of our portfolio here in Kemnath is a further commitment to Germany as a location for innovation."
Radiotherapy is one of the most important methods of modern cancer therapy and is now used in more than half of all cancer treatments
are part of the product portfolio of Varian
Linear accelerators are used both in the outpatient sector and in hospitals for the targeted treatment of cancer
The Halcyon system from Varian is one of the most technically innovative accelerator systems on the market
Siemens Healthineers built another production site for these systems in Kemnath
A second production site is located in Beijing
Siemens Healthineers manufactured radiotherapy systems in Kemnath
are still available and can be used to test the new Varian systems
The production of radiotherapy systems complements the existing portfolio at the site
tables for the TrueBeam radiotherapy system will also be manufactured here.
Every manufacturing company has an impact on the increase in global greenhouse gas emissions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) calls for these emissions to be halved by 2030 in order to achieve the 1.5 degree Celsius target.[1] Countless companies are now focusing on meeting a net zero target
or achieving a state in which a company’s greenhouse gas emissions have no impact on the climate
This can be achieved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain and by offsetting the effects of the remaining emissions
However, this is an ambitious goal, since reducing emissions quickly and drastically presents a complex challenge for companies. Logistical, physical, strategic, and economic hurdles must be overcome — as is the case for employees of Siemens Healthineers working at the company’s site in Kemnath, Germany. Despite the challenges, Stefan König, EHS Manager at Kemnath
The team displays what can be accomplished
and sets a good example for both Siemens Healthineers and other companies
So let’s take a look at the five key steps Kemnath is taking toward net zero and how they are already proving effective
Science-based targets (SBTs) are scientifically based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
They specify the reductions your industry and your company must achieve in order to effectively limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius
The Paris Climate Agreement was signed by the member states of the United Nations in 2015
The agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels
All signatory states confirmed that they would submit voluntary commitments to reduce their emissions
national climate protection contributions must be updated and increased every five years as of 2025
the State of Climate Action study released in 2023 found that global efforts to limit warming are failing across the board and are insufficient to meet the 2030 targets.[2]
SBTs help companies develop their own climate-action strategies by specifying clear and measurable targets
companies commit to reducing emissions and minimizing their ecological footprint
Siemens Healthineers is already making good progress on this path
“We are proud that we’ve already been able to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 80 percent compared to 2010
by implementing measures to improve energy efficiency and lower emissions
The goal for 2030 is to cut our CO2 emissions by a further 90 percent compared to 2019
And we’ll get closer to that goal by installing heat pumps and substituting natural gas in our processes
The implementation of suitable measures is currently being evaluated.” König describes the site’s achievements so far:
Carbon emissions in Kemnath are steadily falling
although the number of employees is growing
The goal for 2030 is to reduce emissions by a further 90 percent compared to 2019 levels
will be further expanded by 2025 with an investment of €60 million
A new administrative building for around 130 employees is currently under construction
This will replace an inefficient predecessor from the 1970s that couldn’t be renovated economically
the new building will house a training area and a reception area.
it will feature a carbon-neutral energy system
with a heating and air conditioning system that uses air/water heat pumps
Rooftop photovoltaic panels is being prepared and can be used to cover as much as ten percent of the building’s electricity needs
The remainder will be purchased from green sources
The building’s insulation and optimally sized windows will help ensure very low energy requirements
It will also have fully LED lighting and demand-based regulation of heating and air conditioning
The building’s surroundings will be attractive and climate-friendly: The outdoor spaces will be greened with native plants
natural shading will provide coolness on hot days
and all sealed surfaces will be light so that they reflect heat and reduce interior temperatures
says everything will be done “just like at home.” In other words
and weighing up the need for every electrical system and component
The building is another area where “many little ideas contribute to the big picture and everyone is aware of what’s needed,” says Höller
adding that everyone in Kemnath is “very proactive.”
There are several intermediate goals on the path to net zero
One important milestone is switching from natural gas to green electricity for manufacturing
A major change like this requires considerable advance planning
including developing and installing the appropriate infrastructure
The Green Team is continually refining the measures needed to make this transition a success
Eco-efficiency in production means using as few resources as possible to manufacture a product
But how can you gain transparent information about the resource use and climate impact of highly complex medtech products
One concept that can help here is the “CO2 equivalent,” a measure that is quantified by multiplying the greenhouse gas emissions by their Global Warming Potential (GWP)
A CO2 equivalent (CO2e) is a unit used to standardize the climate impact of different greenhouse gases
To make the effects of all gases comparable
IPCC experts developed the Global Warming Potential (GWP)
This index expresses the warming effect of a specific amount of a greenhouse gas compared to CO2
As the most relevant greenhouse gas for humans
carbon dioxide is the basis for the standardization
The GWP makes it possible to compare the effects of all greenhouse gases with the effect of CO2
which is why all comparative values are called CO2 equivalents
Head of Technology Catalyst and Sustainability at Technology Center Mechatronic Products Kemnath
explains an important principle for production in the climate-change era: “Eco-efficiency means manufacturing products either in a carbon-neutral way or with fewer CO2 emissions
The product itself becomes eco-effective when we recycle it at the end of its lifecycle.” This cradle-to-cradle (C2C) principle was developed by Professor Michael Braungart
who is collaborating with Siemens Healthineers in Kemnath
Braungart warns of dilemmas that could arise when improving processes: “We do the wrong things perfectly
and thus only perfectly wrong.”[3] As a way out of this dilemma
he describes his approach for achieving a consistent circular economy:
“Effectiveness means doing things in such a way that I can close the cycles in term of ecology
And efficiency means that I simply do things with fewer resources,” explains Ott
you can combine both — by establishing closed loops with a minimal use of resources
Ott notes that “being efficient can mean I simply produce less waste
That means it's important to be both efficient and effective.” As part of the company’s cooperation with Braungart
selected products from the portfolio are analyzed in Kemnath to identify materials and bonding technologies that are not conform to the C2C principle
New C2C-compliant solutions are then developed collaboratively
One example can be found in the 3D-printing center: Here
individual metal or plastic components can now be manufactured onsite for use in production
This is an important step toward applying the C2C principle; it will also make Kemnath less dependent on suppliers and enable the company to retain full control over the resources and materials it uses
König explains that “the reference point for further reducing CO2 emissions is already very low
due to the reduction measures we’ve already implemented
Our goal now is to install heat pumps to replace the natural gas we are currently using to generate heat and to power our processes.”
If the team succeeds in making Kemnath carbon-neutral by 2030
the natural gas still required for surface technology today will be replaced by green electricity
ideally produced in part by photovoltaic panels on the hall roofs
The team is also aiming to achieve optimal handling of recyclable materials
Kemnath sends no plastic waste away from the site; it is thermally used onsite.
materials are to be recycled wherever possible
possible investments in the double-digit million range are being assessed right now
Siemens Healthineers has pledged to be proactive in its environmental efforts
a more decarbonized and more circular value chain will be created every year
The Kemnath site is serving as a role model in this endeavor.
Germany was founded in 1962 and has evolved from a pure contract manufacturer into a center of excellence for mechatronics
The components developed and manufactured in Kemnath include C-arms for angiography systems
Varian also manufactures its linear accelerators for radiotherapy treatments here.
