On 29 July this year, the long-established car seat manufacturer Recaro had to file for insolvency
200 jobs at the company headquarters in Kirchheim unter Teck were to be lost
the Italian Proma Group has signed an investment agreement with Recaro Automotive GmbH in Germany to take over the business and has begun the transition phase
This means that operations throughout Europe can be resumed and continued from January 2025

With a restrained material palette and industrial inspiration
mehr* Architekten craft a local icon in Kirchheim unter Teck
By: Florian Heilmeyer
Photography: Sebastian Schels
A small new building for a start-up brewery in Southern Germany proves that good architecture and good beer have more in common than many realize
the context also “provides an industrial architectural language and inspiration.” Like a good beer
their minimalist brewery building only needs a handful of ingredients to create a self-confident
it is about “less is more,” Mies van der Rohe’s famous dictum
But the real challenge is about the precision in what you do with this “less”
It is about the precision of the position. Together with the older buildings nearby, the small new building creates an open courtyard, and towards the street, a low concrete wall makes just enough space for a small beer garden under a large old tree. Here, the building shows what is its strongest facade visually, largely closed and made of exposed concrete
It looks like a scissor-cut silhouette or a graphical icon for an industrial building on a traffic sign
a very clear form that can be understood in a second
To prevent the building from becoming just a touch too austere or hermetic
the architects cut an extra-large round window in the wall and painted the metal door
in a light pastel green that subtly connects to the mild green of the industrial glass that covers almost the entire northern facade
This generous glass surface soaks the inner space in subdued daylight while at night it also turns the building into a glowing object
almost like an oversized lantern for this underprivileged area
if the beer that’s brewed here doesn’t attract enough guests
the building itself is strong enough to find a new use without losing any of its persuasive powers

Update—Recaro and BBS America have provided the following statements to Motor1:
has filed for insolvency with the Local Court of Esslingen
The company encountered significant financial difficulties due to extreme price increases in recent crisis years and the loss of a major contract
The effects of legacy products and business operations impacted the development of new product offerings during a regional reduction in vehicle purchase spend
the court approved preliminary self-administration and appointed attorney Holger Blümle from the law firm Schultze & Braun as the preliminary custodian
The international consulting firm Baker Tilly is providing legal advice throughout the process
Insolvency payments will secure employees' wages and salaries
The employees were informed as of Tuesday morning in a townhall meeting together with the trade union
The company plans to maintain full production during the insolvency proceedings to continue fulfilling all existing orders and new customer inquiries
The shareholders have emphasized the importance of the organization in the region for the group and have pledged their support for the restructuring efforts
The insolvency proceedings are limited to Recaro Automotive GmbH and do not affect any other group companies
traditional Swabian company intends to strengthen its position both locally and globally through this process
under judicial supervision and with the support of Baker Tilly
By working together as a team with our employees
and customers through the possibility of an insolvency plan under the German Law we expect to stand on solid ground again in a timely manner
BBS America President Craig Donnelly told Motor1 the insolvency news came as a surprise but assured us that the American side
which is under different ownership from its German counterpart
"We are independent of that whole situation," he explained
"But it’s a bad situation for everyone overall
because we don’t know what's going to happen at this point."
everyone has probably sat in a Recaro seat at some point
Now Recaro Automotive has filed for bankruptcy
the famous seat company's filing came as a surprise to employees as well as IG Metall
The news surfaced July 29 in Germany through the Esslingen District Court
“What this means for the 215 employees of Recaro Automotive GmbH in Kirchheim is unclear,” said the union
“We expect all options to be exhausted in order to secure jobs and find a sustainable solution.”
The works council also expressed its disappointment
as the workforce had helped to keep the company economically stable by waiving and deferring wages
“We are disappointed and feel let down by the management,” said works council chairman Frank Bokowits
the bankruptcy filing only applies to Recaro Automotive
Recaro Automotive isn't the only auto-related brand reporting financial issues right now
Long-established wheel manufacturer BBS has also filed for insolvency proceedings at the Rottweil Local Court
The company had reportedly stopped paying wages for May and June
BBS has been in trouble several times over the last decade or so
ISH Management Services acquired BBS Automotive GmbH prior to this filing
which declared in a statement: “We will never let down the people who have walked this path with us
which for us is one of the biggest German global brands
We have a plan and we are determined to implement it.”
According to Auto Motor Sport
an agreement to transfer the brand and distribution rights was completed in June 2024
the IG Metall trade union was completely surprised and is reportedly puzzled by the management's behavior
In addition to its aftermarket offerings, BBS has supplied wheels to numerous automakers over the years including Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz

In the category Commercial and Industrial Buildings
the office mehr* architekten from Kirchheim unter Teck (D) won gold with their “Brewery Hall Kirchheim unter Teck”.
The yearly run, German-based “Best Architects Award” selected 8 projects to receive gold, including the Brewery Hall Kirchheim unter Teck project by German firm Mehr* Architekten for the brewery hall for the start-up Braurevolution
the finer details of the project are equally convincing
such as the production and storage facilities
the building echoes the features of major industrial buildings
As the founders of the firm—David Brodbeck
Jens Rössler and Florian van het Hekke founded—are most proud of their conceptual approach
which involves the meticulous analysis of culture
history and context in order to find a specific solution for the location and task; it’s not a surprise they’d take inspiration from the above-mentioned works
The three came together under one roof with the idea of merging experiences and professions into a think tank
The brewery project exemplifies their combined efforts
The simple volume of the brewery with a gable roof is given its distinctive character by an attached light band above the ridge
creating an iconic roof form on the gable walls
By raising them and changing the material to exposed concrete
between which the steel structure clad in Profilit glazing spans
which thus does justice to the traditional use of a brewery with a taproom and warehouse sales.
The architectural image of the new brewery hall is a kind of showroom

A set structure will house the cold storage and ancillary rooms
This can be dismantled in case of a possible other subsequent use

LEKI is a German brand specialising in sports equipment
the family-owned company with headquarters in Kirchheim unter Teck produces ski poles
hiking poles and trekking poles as well as gloves
clothing and accessories for outdoor sports
The majority of the products are manufactured in LEKI’s factory in Tachov

Karl and Gertrud Lenhart founded the wood turnery "Karl Lenhart
Plastik + Metall" laying the foundation for today's internationally successful outdoor brand LEKI
After previously producing wooden lettering for bakeries or butchers' shops
Karl Lehnhart soon turned his attention to ski poles - driven by his enthusiasm for winter sports and simultaneous dissatisfaction with the quality and functionality of the ski poles at that time
Drawing on his experience in aircraft construction
the founder designed the first ski pole made of aluminium
He launched his innovation on the market in 1970 under the name LEKI
which stands for the owner and the company headquarters - Lenhart in Kirchheim
After the great success of the LEKI alpine poles
the range was expanded to include cross-country ski poles in 1973
Later Karl Lehnert also turned to hiking and in 1974 developed the world's first adjustable trekking pole LEVI Makalu
these were the poles Reinhold Messner used to become the first person to climb Mount Everest
took over the management of LEKI in 1984 and led the company to worldwide success with innovations such as the patented Trigger system
LEKI brought another revolution to the outdoor market by introducing its versatile folding pole
The company is now run by the third generation of the family
LEKI partners with over 1,000 athletes in alpine skiing
who was the first Nepalese woman to climb Makalu in 2019

Installation artist Alex Chinneck likes to trick the eye. Recent works include building facades that appear to be sliding down to the ground or torn in half. For his current show at the Städtische Galerie Kornhaus in Kirchheim unter Teck
he “knotted” one of the museum’s 450-year-old pillars
“I’m glad they let us cast one of their columns
but they probably shouldn’t have,” he says
Likewise logic-bending is Onwards & Upwards
an in-process public installation of five redbrick chimneys in Sheffield and Rotherham
Each will be somehow manipulated: One will be separated nearly in half
Considering the chimneys’ 75,000 locally produced bricks, the project is no small feat. By the 2019 opening, Chinneck will have spent four years researching and fabricating as well as collaborating with the University of Sheffield’s engineering department—the sculptures must stand
“It’s 5 percent idea,” Chinneck states
> See more from the March 2018 issue of Interior Design
Chinneck’s first indoor sculpture in five years
Part of “Knots,” the architectural intervention also includes the introduction of a perfectly straight column—virtually indistinguishable from the historical ones—to create symmetry around the knotted pillar
“I like to give fluidity to typically inflexible things
transcending their material nature,” says Chinneck
who included a hard-carved wooden broom leaning against the wall
“I wanted to create the impression that the work was born through manipulation
Chinneck’s knotted works continue their journey when Onwards and Upwards, the largest public artwork ever commissioned in England’s Sheffield City Region, goes on view. Slated to open in summer 2019, the commission by the Tinsley Art Project comprises four chimneys
that riff on the region’s industrial heritage.

Is Instagram down? This was the question a handful of Instagram users began to ask in early August 2021
The social media platform primarily functions with Instagram Feed and Instagram Stories
While Instagram Stories appeared to be working properly
the feeds of a partial number of users failed to load
resulting in the error: "Couldn't Refresh Feed."
Courtesy: Instagram
The error was a different one from a previous Instagram outage that was fixed on Aug
The "couldn't refresh feed" issue was newer and remained unfixed as of Aug
Snopes.com was able to independently verify the "couldn't refresh feed" error. The issue appeared to not be able to be fixed with a password change, reinstallation of the app, or a reset of an iPhone's network settings. Further, the issue also occurred when logging in to instagram.com on a desktop computer
and was not isolated to the mobile device application
A number of Twitter users reported that the error had been occurring for at least several days
with some of them posting the hashtag #instagramdown
More tweets that reported the "couldn't refresh feed" Instagram error are available through this search
it did not appear that Instagram's support team had issued any information regarding the error
We also were unable to find any other reporting on the matter
It's not uncommon for social media platforms to have downtime. For example, we recently covered a widespread outage of TikTok that lasted several hours
Update: This story was updated to add a statement from a Facebook company spokesperson

Fragrance on the Fly: Why Pocket Perfumes Are Perfect for Airplane TravelSponsored Article 6.05.2025
Text description provided by the architects. The medieval old town of Kirchheim near Stuttgart is substantially characterized by its small-scale edificial structure. At the heart of Kirchheim, the “Gasthof Waldhorn” — a run-down ancient inn — has now been demolished. Both the applicable building regulations with the city’s particular “Old Town Statute” as well as the city council with its designated architectural advisory board give little leeway to subsequent construction.
Based on that, the distinctive urbanistic footprint of the “Gasthof Waldhorn” was to be mimicked. At the same time, the city and its advisory board called for a contemporary new building that was to adequately approach both the aspect of timber framing and the town’s small-scale urbanistic structure.
© Sebastian SchelsFrom outside, the silhouette and the materiality of the new edifice appear similar to those of its predecessor and feature a dark tiled roof, walls finished with pale plaster as well as the visible wooden structure of the upward-stepping gable of the market-facing facade. In contrast to the historical neighbouring buildings close-by, the surface colouring may be more homogeneous.
SectionThe interior of the building is dominated by its architecture and simple materiality. The edifice sits on a massive foundation – made up of the basement with several secondary rooms and the wine cellar – that carries the ground floor – with dining area, kitchen and bar – which is again followed upwards by the wooden roof. Thanks to the visible wooden beam ceiling, this transition from heavy, massive structural elements to woodwork can already be divined in the dining area.
© Sebastian SchelsIn the attic, too, all elements of the wooden roof truss are still visible while the complexity of the crooked roof that sits on the contorted outline of the former building can only just be assumed. The function hall itself opens up to the entrance with five generous windows in the facade, offering views on the bustling Kirchheim market and providing insights into the wooden interior of the attic from outside.
© Sebastian SchelsThe building’s interior is further characterized by lasting natural materials. Among these are the large oakwood floorboards in the dining rooms, the downstairs stone floors, the plastered wall surfaces, the wooden windows and the visible elements of the timber structure.
© Sebastian SchelsEven the interior fittings follow this specific material concept
with old and new solid wood furniture completing the picture
With only one year of construction time and in a planning process that involved the constructor
the city council with its architectural advisory board as well as the interested and committed citizenry
a new urbanistic brick was layed in Kirchheim’s historical ensemble

Known for his mind-bending installation art, Alex Chinneck has moved indoors for his latest art installation
tying a 450-year-old wood column into a knot
the British sculptor has conceived another stunning piece of optical illusion art
one that sees him installing an indoor sculpture for the first time in five years
After his hovering stone building and seemingly melted building facade
Chinneck brings his unique background in architecture
and set design to the interior of a German museum
Located in the small town of Kirchheim Unter Teck
the museum's historic wooden columns served as the inspiration for Chinneck's artwork
His knotted column seems to defy logic—even when one knows it's simply an art installation
it's impossible not to feel as though it fits perfectly into place within the gallery
Chinneck's approach was purposely sensitive
teasing out the illusion while paying respect to the surroundings
“I wanted to create the impression that we had only changed what was already physically present in the museum and the work was born through the manipulation
the objective was to produce something sculpturally bold but contextually sensitive.”
work of art that blends in flawlessly with the environment
demonstrating Chinneck's ability to transition between exterior and interior spaces
the artist also added a straight column in order to give the overall installation balance and symmetry
It's this attention to detail that helps bring the illusion to life
“I like to give fluidity to typically inflexible things
The columns are the prominent feature in the 450-year-old museum and this intervention took an opportunity to defy logic and distort history.”

Intel's Chief Sales Officer Christoph Schell is leaving the company by the end of June
the 53-year-old wants to be free for a new career move: Industrial robot manufacturer Kuka from Augsburg has announced that Schell will seamlessly take over the position of CEO there on July 1
Schell has already been a member of Kuka's Supervisory Board since the beginning of 2023
where he is also Chairman of the Strategy and Technology Committee
He was born in the Swabian town of Kirchheim unter Teck
Schell's departure apparently comes as a surprise to Intel
as the company is unable to name a direct successor ad hoc
responsible for the chip giant's overall sales
will be replaced on an interim basis by Corporate Vice President Greg Ernst
More than 20 percent of the workforce could soon lose their jobs
which the new management hopes will increase profits and the company's competitiveness
Tan launched an initiative against working from home and demanded in April that every employee must return to the company four days a week
Schell will probably no longer have to implement this change
