He sought political asylum in Britain after Russian authorities accused him of embezzlement
a charge he denies and says is politically motivated
"Going after Putin isn't easy," he told Reuters
"With others you can look at offshore companies and accounts
Putin is careful."Ashurkov shared a Zoom dinner with Navalny and his wife a few weeks after Navalny regained consciousness
and he noticed a hardening of his friend's resolve."As he became more and more convinced of the involvement of Putin in his poisoning
he became more and more focused on trying to expose" Putin's actions
Ashurkov said. This shift in mood was noticed by Christo Grozev
lead investigator of British open-source news project Bellingcat
Grozev interacted with Navalny on another investigation
around the same time as the Putin palace expose
that identified Navalny's alleged poisoners as agents of Russia's FSB intelligence
The Kremlin has dismissed the report."He had a strong hypothesis that nobody in Russia would have access to Novichok," the chemical used to poison him
"without the consent of the Kremlin."Navalny shot and produced much of his video investigation about Putin at Black Forest Studios in the small town of Kirchzarten. One of the studio's owners
told the local "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" newspaper that she had no idea who had hired the space until Navalny showed up
unwinding at the end of the day in the studio bar
the studio declined to comment further.Navalny filmed segments elsewhere too
Notably in Dresden outside the apartment where Putin used to live when he worked for the KGB in the 1980s and in Berlin where Navalny visited the archives of the Stasi secret police to see Putin's identity card.In mid-December
Navalny declared his poisoning case solved."I know who wanted to kill me
I have their photos," Navalny said in a video
summarizing the findings of the Bellingcat investigation
"This is a story about a secret group of murderers from the FSB that includes doctors and chemists."A few days later
he announced he had phoned up one of his would-be killers and tricked him into disclosing details of the murder plot
including that poison had been placed in Navalny's underpants
Reuters couldn't independently confirm his assertions.Russian authorities dropped unambiguous hints that he would be jailed if he returned
These included a move by state investigators to open a new fraud case against Navalny
a charge he denies.MOSCOW IS MY CITYSome of Navalny's supporters hoped he would stay out of Russia
for his safety but they soon realized he was determined to return home as soon as possible.Ashurkov
said he wanted to plant the idea that Navalny "has options
that he can engineer a life outside Russia for a while
that he would at least consider it.""But when I looked at him and talked to him and started reading what he was writing
I understood that returning to Russia was his sole aim and there was no talking to him about this."Zimin
who paid for Navalny's emergency flight from Siberia to Berlin
believes Navalny "understood that he had a path to remain in Germany and live a normal life
But he wouldn't have the same influence
It seems to me he made his choice before he even began to think about what might happen
He acted according to his principles and values
which prevailed over everyday concerns."A German official confirmed to Reuters that Navalny made no request to stay
"We didn't receive an asylum request
He is a free man and he returned out of his own free will."Navalny used Instagram to announce his planned return to Russia."It was never a question of whether to return or not
I ended up in Germany after arriving in an intensive care box for one reason: they tried to kill me," Navalny wrote
Moscow is my city and I miss it."Having made his flight details public
Navalny was accompanied by a gaggle of journalists on the flight
his plane was diverted to another of the city's airports to thwart his supporters who were waiting to greet him.His arrest was swift
Four masked police officers intercepted him at passport control
Navalny's allies released their Putin palace video. At least nine of Navalny's allies inside Russia were then detained one by one for what the authorities said were illegal calls for protests amid a pandemic
cutting them off from the internet and their mobile phones
Others fled the country.A couple of weeks later
a Moscow court jailed Navalny for nearly three years for parole violations
ignoring a Western outcry over his treatment and nationwide protests that had attracted tens of thousands in the middle of winter. Some supporters wondered if he should have waited longer before returning
perhaps closer to parliamentary elections that are due in September
when the weather for protests would be better
the London-based ally who helped pay for Navalny's treatment
said he counselled caution when he visited Navalny in the Black Forest."I advised him to wait because it was dangerous
It was useless," he told Reuters.Aleksashenko
said it was debatable whether the timing of Navalny's return could have been any better
six months from now "the Kremlin – and Kremlin media – would have said: Your team is in prison and you are hiding over there."Leonid Volkov
said the timing of Navalny's return was never in doubt."It was always clear that as soon as the doctors said it was possible for him to return
There was no strategizing," Volkov told Reuters. In recent weeks
Russian state media have sought to remind Russians of Navalny's past flirtation with far right groups
Navalny likened militants in Chechnya to cockroaches and espoused deporting migrants
"We have the right to be Russian in Russia and we will defend that right." In 2008
when a short war broke out between Russia and Georgia
Navalny has moved away from such rhetoric in the last decade
Allies say these early comments were an attempt to form a broad-based anti-Kremlin alliance
which meant engaging with hardcore nationalists too.In the latest legal jousting
20 a Moscow court found Navalny guilty of slandering a World War Two veteran
Navalny has said authorities are attempting to tarnish his reputation.Funding for Navalny and his allies has surged
much of it in hard-to-trace bitcoin donations
Bitcoin donations worth nearly $300,000 at current prices were received from Jan
At least two financial backers confirmed to Reuters that they have increased their regular donations.Navalny's supporters don't expect any rapid change in Russia
who helped pay for Navalny's treatment
believes only further mass protests can pose a real challenge to the Kremlin.Leber

For the most part, fire trucks are slow
and not all that good in difficult terrain
In the town of Kirchzarten in southwestern Germany, the volunteer fire brigade uses a custom Unimog U 5023, optimized as the perfect tool to battle fires in the dense Black Forest
The fire truck has an incredible 17.7-inches (45 cm) of ground clearance
rolls on a set of huge off-road wheels and tires
and features an advanced four-wheel drive system
Although the front of the truck and most of the cabin remains typical for a Unimog
the rest of the vehicle has been transformed for its fire-fighting duties
there is a huge water tank in the rear that can hold 1,056 gallons (4,000 liters) of water and 132 gallons (500 liters) of foam
A powerful Ziegler pump allows it to fire out up to 793 gallons (3000 liters) of water per minute
Powering the capable fire truck is a four-cylinder BlueTec 6 diesel engine pumping out 231 hp and 663 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque
That monumental torque figure ensures the Unimog can conquer the most difficult terrain without breaking a sweat
All things considered, the Unimog fire truck is simply the coolest
Retired Stanger surprises herself with women's victory
he took the overall race by just one second ahead of Belgian champion Kevin van Hoovels and marathon world champion Alban Lakata
Surprisingly the victory in women's category went to Gabi Stanger
who finished in front of Estonian Maaris Meier and Holland's Anne Terpstra
The men's peloton was a strong one and the climbs in the middle mountains of the Zollernalb
were not long enough to make a big difference among the top riders
took 13 men together into the final straight
It was Swiss marathon champion Andreas Kugler who profited from the work of teammates Hannes Genze and Jochen Käss by winning the sprint in Balingen
while overall contender Karl Platt lost all chances by puncturing in the very first 20 kilometers
The second stage was expected to make the difference
made it together toward the finish in Albstadt
Karl Platt took the lead by pushing very hard
"I thought that the last kilometer was two to go
and I gave Hannes the chance to pass," said Platt
That was the wrong decision because after Genze took the lead
and there was no way for Platt to overtake Genze again
who took the yellow jersey by three seconds over René Tann who passed the finish line in third position
Alban Lakata was at four seconds and van Hoovels was at six seconds
The tight situation opened up an exciting final stage between Albstadt and Hechingen
and René Tann crashed and lost his chance to win
Kevin van Hoovels and Czech Kristian Hynek got a small gap of about 10 seconds to Hannes Genze
"We saw the chance and went full gas," said Lakata
Hannes Genze put everything he had left on the line but it wasn't enough to catch the lead trio on the final climb
Lakata lost two seconds and Hynek came into third with three seconds
Genze passed the finish line in fourth position with five seconds to van Hoovels
That secured him the yellow jersey on his shoulders
"I think today there were a lot of riders able to win
I'm happy that I was able to fight back and get that second," said Genze
Van Hoovels and Lakata finished with the same time but with Lakata set into third place for the overall
"Hannes got his Pitbull look and was fighting really hard," said Lakata
The women's category didn't draw as many big names
Gabi Stanger surprised many and was able to grab the overall
The 42-year-old retired two years ago and took a licence this year again only to ride sometimes for fun
but not in a way I did when I was competing seriously in a team," said Stanger
Stanger took stage 1 and stage 2 and the overall ahead of Maaris Meier
The junior European bronze medalist of 2009 handled the constant up and downs better than Stanger
but she was too far away in the overall to endanger Stanger's standing as leader
sozusagen."

Shimano has purchased Pearl Izumi from Nautilus
Pearl Izumi becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Shimano’s U.S
and will continue to operate from its facilities in Broomfield
Purchase price was reportedly US$69.5 million
including $65.3 million in cash and the assumption of $4.2 million in long-term debt along with any net working capital adjustments
Pending regulatory approval and closing conditions
the deal is expected to be completed by March 31
“The acquisition brings together two companies started by Japanese families who share a passion for cycling,” said Pfeiffer
“Both have strong research and development backgrounds
and share an obsession with quality and performance
We’ll continue to build the respective brands and remain dedicated to the healthy independent dealer networks we’ve both enjoyed.”
Pfeiffer also noted that Pearl Izumi would be maintained as a stand-alone company with its own management team
“Pearl Izumi is a leader in the performance sports apparel and footwear market
and we plan to keep them in that position,” Pfeiffer said
“Pearl Izumi’s design expertise creates products for the avid cycling and running enthusiasts and we’ll provide Juergen Eckmann (Pearl Izumi’s president) and his team with all of Shimano’s support and resources needed to continue that tradition.”
Eckmann said the acquisition is a great fit for both companies
“The entire team at Pearl Izumi USA and Europe are excited about opportunities and benefits we gain in becoming part of Shimano,” said Eckmann
“Shimano provides knowledge and expertise which will make our brand stronger and we in turn have a great deal of experience in performance apparel
fabric technologies and run footwear that Shimano did not previously possess.”
Pfeiffer said that Shimano will continue to offers its branded apparel and cycling footwear along with the Pearl Izumi apparel and cycling footwear in all markets
Shimano’s acquisition includes Pearl Izumi’s facility in Kirchzarten
and the rights to Pearl Izumi sales and distribution throughout North and South America
Pfeiffer notes the purchase does not include sales and distribution rights of Pearl Izumi branded products in Japan and most of Asia
Shimano American Corporation is the U.S.-based subsidiary of Shimano
a multi-national manufacturer of bicycle components and fishing tackle
