Note from LeftEast editors: This interview was originally published on Meduza.mk on September 27, 2024. The text has been lightly edited. After re-reading The Partisan Counter-Archives at the start of the summer
I concluded that Kirn’s critical insights on historical revisionism
and politics of memory are acutely relevant
his theory and study seem to me time-tested by the ongoing racial and colonial hypocrisy in Western academia and the humanities in the context of the wars and crises that shake the world today
as exposed through the prevailing deafness and epistemological injustice towards the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza
our conversation moved along those contemporary coordinates
Remembering the Partisans and the Ideas Behind the People’s Liberation Struggle
Ivana Hadjievska: You start the book with a reflection on Francis Fukuyama’s thesis about the “end of history.” On the one hand
global capitalism needs less and less liberal democracy and more of an empty ritualized form of democracy
ideologies have never been more alive and their symptoms in the culture and in people’s lives have never been more obscene
Is the “counter archive” a concept and/оr form of practice that can stand as an antidote to the historical policies of liberal democracy—a winner
Gal Kirn: Fukuyama’s words came at the peak of the triumph of capitalist democracy
he revised his position and even called for a reform-oriented social democratic future
One thing that has persisted is the notion that there is only one political solution—the liberal democracy
accompanied by enlightened technocracy that “will lead us in the future,” i.e.
The message is: forget about other experiments of utopian thinking
you basically annul the thinking about the past
so what you get is this outdated legacy of Western Enlightenment
wrapped in a religious teleological version of historical development
It works as an appeasement of all conflicts or rather erasure of asymmetries and antagonisms
If we zoom into the Yugoslav context in the 1980–1990s
obviously there was also democratic invention
in the sense that a lot of people were politicized
Tomaž Mastnak spoke of a “socialist” civil society
In the retrospective representation of the events from the 1980s
most of the mobilized people were presented as nationalist subjects
those who fell prey to nationalist propaganda
It is often forgotten that many working people demanded democratic socialism
or that there is more socialism not less (especially in terms of social protection and better wages)
Let’s have a look at another example from the same period—Poland: although often presented as a strictly conservative and catholic society
it was the birthplace of the Solidarność movement
Organized workers demanded a return towards communism
they organized illegal strikes and had their own printing press
People in disintegrating socialist states in the 1990s were surely not as anti-socialist as presented after the demise of socialism
if we already think along the lines of the “end of history,” I would prefer to speak in more precise terms
There were a couple of “deaths of history”: one happened in the 1980s with the death of socialism and the advancement of financialization of the state and banks
leading to an increasing dependency on the global market
we witnessed the death of Yugoslavia as such: the idea of emancipation and equality between nations and nationalities was overthrown by the idea of ethnic identity and supremacy
A state that was created in the name of the oppressed and by the oppressed was withering away
The first thing that died was socialism with the principle of social justice and solidarity among everyone
and then the idea of federal Yugoslavia and brotherhood followed down the drain
What was then born was not an act of political emancipation
rather it was a mere formal right to succeed from the former state (Yugoslavia)
This gave birth to Slovenian and Croatian independence… The act of independence itself carried no serious emancipation for working people
and different social groups and minorities
all those who became more vulnerable and more oppressed in the following years
The wars in the 1990s weren’t liberation wars
while the political elites aligned with foreign opinion leaders were trying to convince us that the wars were just a part of our local culture of eternal ethnic animosity; meaning that without a strong dictator (Tito)
There was a wave of privatizations and destruction of social infrastructure that took place
It is in that sense that I define the process of “primitive accumulation of revisionist memory”: massive levels of violence
and memorial revisionism were needed in order for socialism and Yugoslavia to die
This is why we cannot speak only of an economic transformation
but of a major ideological and political transformation
I.H.: Talking about “national reconciliation” in the aftermath of the Yugoslav state
transfers the entire weight of the partisan movement to the building of national sovereignty of each Yugoslav people separately
it suppresses the (memory of) communist ideology that was the foundation of the People’s Liberation Struggle
it’s not uncommon to hear someone brag about their partisan grandparents one minute
only to applaud colonial policies the next
Is there a possible solution for this perverted co-opting
we can observe different memorial strategies across the post-Yugoslav space
the attitude towards People’s Liberation Struggle (NOB) legacies is iconoclast: it’s about eradicating the antifascist partisan past
especially parts of Croatia that have been successfully cleansed of that past
Then there is a typical example of “wild” reconciliation
Let’s take the example of the Kozara monument in Republika Srpska
where partisans and chetniks are being commemorated together; or in Slovenia
sophisticated process of “national reconciliation,” which was presented as a beacon of “civilized ways of commemoration.” Through this subtle ideology evoked in the name of humanism
the ruling elites decided that the fascists and the partisans should be put on the same footing
It wasn’t important that during the Second World War
these were antagonist forces that could not be and cannot be reconciled
One symptomatic monument in the centre of Ljubljana dedicated to “all the victims of violence in the 20th century” [The Memorial of all victims of war] was erected in 2014
Monuments like this decontextualize the struggle and aim to nationalize all the victims
and could thus be seen as members of the space of national sovereignty established with the independence in the 1990s
The “minor” detail that local collaborationists fought in the name of racial and ethnic purity does not enter into the discussion
a lot of space for therapeutic methods emerged
deriving from individual practices dealing with personal trauma
which were now implemented on the nation as a whole
If the Slovenian nation wants a free entrance into the future
it needs to reconcile with its tormenting past
what also arose in the (post-)Yugoslav context was the weaponization of victimhood: diverse historians
and political leaders started competing over which nation had more victims in the 20th century
and these victims were portrayed through an ethno-religious lens
In her essay “Rethinking holocaust memory after October 7,” she writes how the holocaust memory and its exceptionality were being abused in partial ways to construct a protective shield
exculpating Israel’s war crimes throughout its state history
This just goes to show how the academic theoretical field can also play a role in the rehabilitation of fascist practices or similar strategies in new contexts
This is something we have to take into account when we are dealing with memory studies
I.H: It seems that memory transitions (1980s–1990s) were more important than the economic transition in the region
How are those related to the material basis of the society
K.: In order to have a deep transformation of the society
the elites needed to execute a transition in the socio-political apparatus
and being different from others in the Balkans—all this was emphasized in the process
I’m coming from an Althusserian tradition that is based on structural thinking about ideological and state apparatuses
This aspect can help us understand how counter-revolutionary forces work in a society and how social changes take their historical course
For example: the League of Communists was not a simple monolith where all were some die-hard communists: The League of Communists became full of diverse cadres that represented nationalist and liberal ideologies and were interested in sustaining or expanding their power
it was not the site of the economy that was the most important in thinking historical course; rather
and their major companies were losing big time
Even if one of the warring parties was winning with territories or had fewer human losses
spending on social infrastructure and becoming more dependent on the West
The social infrastructure that had been built over decades was destroyed
Economically speaking this was a catastrophe
That’s why the transition to capitalist democracy cannot be observed from the economic aspect only
Ideology critique and critical memory studies
as well as other disciplines that tackle the past
need to offer interdisciplinary connections between ideological
(Women’s) Emancipation from a Historical Perspective
Renata Jabrešić Kirin defines similar phenomena in the post-Yugoslav space as the “crisis of the women’s archive.” The care for the AFZ legacy from the 2000s onwards has been taken up by women’s organizations
and cultural workers—forming “communities of memory.” How to reconcile this position: by re-conquering the institutional space or by further strengthening the communities of memory
K.: When it comes to the historical legacies of AFŽ
examples of people working with AFŽ archives: in Slovenia
there is the research work of Liljana Burcar
and the documentation of AFZ/women’s choirs
kongresa AFŽ]—the birthplace of Slovenian AFZ
those women’s collectives were communist and antifascist
and almost impossible to commemorate their history
The new elites didn’t know whether and how to narrate their complex story
one such symbolic erasure took place with the removal of the monument commemorating women’s protest from the occupied Ljubljana in 1943
The event commemorated masses of women who protested against the fascist prison system
in August even a mass of around 10,000 people was mobilized
when an antifascist activist could be arrested and deported to a concentration camp
women with their resilience and courage become the backbone of the resistance
These protests became major sites of women’s political subjectivities
were relegated to the sphere of NGOs and artists across the post-Yugoslav context
One beautiful example is the work of the organisation CRVENA
which digitalised the Archive of Antifascist Struggle of Women of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Yugoslavia
The care of archives as a testament to the emancipatory legacy was again taken by women but mostly relegated to individual enthusiasm and NGO initiatives
there are museums and relevant institutions that do a good job of taking care of the legacy
But the care shouldn’t stay in fenced gardens
a partisan forest should be made by alliances built between different forces: researchers
curators—that would know how to bring these counter-histories in a narration
in something that would not end as a “project.” Different subjects should not give up working on this on the ground level
this “cultural work” was reported under “cultural-educational and propaganda activities” in the institutional (archives) yearly reports
K.: The kind of socializing of the archival material mentioned in the example is an interesting concept
but it should be looked at in the context of the social and economic relationships in the 1950s when social ownership and socialization were juxtaposed with nationalization
let’s say in France—when they speak about the Archive
they have always emphasized a capital “A,” an institution that organizes and interprets state sovereignty
an archive can well be an integral part of state reason
when you have a process of socialization of archives
sometimes that could mean going against state reasoning because it opens an opportunity for a more critical engagement
is to curate archival material in a way that communicates across time
and see how the documents speak to us in different contexts
and how those counter-archives can be seen by the communities as their archives
I have done a lot of research on riots in history
and in many respects community archives after riots became really important for the research and work in those communities
They show that there was not only violence
that those who were invested in the riots were not simply violent subjects to be policed
but rather that these people who belonged to oppressed and segregated communities were always culturally and politically very creative and innovative
That they were and are part of a longer history
This aspect must be taken into consideration when we talk about the socialization of the archives
I.H.: In the Macedonian context, the first public scholarly conference on the Roma Holocaust was held in 2019. The presence of Roma people in public history is strictly controlled by entrenched racism, practices of discrimination, and feelings of shame
The historical experiences and memories of the Roma victims of the Holocaust exist and are kept in “communities of memory”—i.e.
It seems that there are “hierarchies of grief and anger” among the nations
where some lives are valued and hurt less than others
Can we explain how this othering operates through memory and how hierarchies like these are built
one of the issues of memory politics was the prioritization of victory; victims that had ethnic signifiers were all under “victims of fascism,” only after that main designation
Maybe a useful example for an alternative can be taken from the Black Lives Matter movement—their strong anti-colonial push developed mechanisms in order to bring stronger awareness towards the group’s victimhood
But I don’t think that with “a little bit better education
everything will be fixed.” If we are serious enough about the decolonial push
the discussion would lead to a change in the material condition of the community in question
which again comes back to organization and economy
the question would be—how can we connect the struggles and not make them more separate
this does not speak against attempts that want to rightfully highlight and tackle the long-excluded Roma memories and histories
The Legacy of NOB in the 21st Century: Against Centers of Power
I.H.: In the local partisan lore from my city, there is the example of Mite Bogoevski (1919–1942)
he became a member of SKOJ in the late 1930s
and then part of the partisan movement when the Second World War began
As a student he had clashes with the school administration
but stayed vocal about his communist ideas through his poetry
His story reminds me of a reflection from your book
to Hannah Arendt’s important philosophical contribution to human morality
about the “banality of evil.” You suggest a solution: what if we subverted the gaze
and took a look at examples from partisan movements across history
in the prevailing loneliness and sorrow (“springtime of fascism”)
help us in the current struggles for universal emancipation
G.K.: It’s not only about how you interpret and curate the archival material
as you never know how it is going to be used or abused afterwards
A message that is important for all of us who are included
is that not everything is lost and over yet
Let’s reflect on the first question again – about the end of history: if
we are already living in the end times—with the upcoming ecological catastrophe
how can we still think of the future in a utopian way
it won’t manifest in some “big event.” Now let’s resort to history: if we take the fascist occupation during the Second World War
but there was the feeling of an open horizon; and truly
relative prosperity and political autonomy unfolded
The ongoing crisis today is a moment of historical change—one that occurs once or twice in our lifetime
we should not forget the importance of micro-politics
There has always been resistance—on an individual and collective level
That is the lesson that one should always have in mind
Although the ideological-commercial apparatus that we live in today may be more subtle
even stronger than that faced by our predecessors from a century ago
people are relatively freer than in the period of fascist occupation
Being a partisan meant not to wait in despair
To be a partisan today doesn’t mean to just be against something—against eco-catastrophe
It means to participate in a utopian imagination
to ask questions like: what is the world that we want to have
who is this “we,” how should we organize… These are the questions that partisans or neo-partisans have to ask
The answers can be found in small micro-gestures
We should continue our quest towards that which provides optimism and articulation of hope

MORGANTOWN — Steve Sabins emphasizes two words in describing pitcher Griffin Kirn: ultimate trust
as the Mountaineers (3-0) began the college baseball season with a three-game sweep over Jacksonville
He pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit and one run in a 4-2 win that gave Kirn his first Division I victory in his first game

saying there is so much riding on his first season as WVU’s head coach with the Mountaineers facing possibly its highest expectations for a season than ever before
His first ever starting pitcher was not going to be just some guy
“He had everybody on the team believing in him,” Sabins said
there’s zero chance he’s got the ball in that scenario.”
Sabins’ first starting pitcher was pitching at the Division II level last season
was on very few recruiting radars last summer coming out of private liberal arts college Quincy (Ill.) University
It was just last season when WVU found pitcher Derek Clark from the Division II level and he developed into the Mountaineers’ top pitcher and a ninth-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Angels
Sabins isn’t quite ready to put Kirn into that same type of projection
“There’s a hell of a lot more to prove,” Sabins said
“He’s got five innings under his belt against a team that’s not even in our conference
There’s so much more to prove and he has to continue to get better.”
What Sabins has proven in his time previously as WVU’s recruiting coordinator
is there is literally no area of baseball that won’t be researched in trying to find players to bring to Morgantown
the easy route would be to scout the future stars on the U.S.A
the players every college coach is scouting
It’s not that Sabins is scared off from that type of recruiting competition
but there is a sense of reality that goes along with it
“If we pretend that West Virginia is the same institution as everybody else trying to compete for national titles
we will finish second more times than not,” he said
whether that means finding a player like Sam White from Canada or diving into the transfer portal for Division II pitchers like Clark and Kirn
You have to find markets that aren’t tapped and go to places others aren’t willing to go
who joins outfielder Kyle West as WVU players on this season’s roster who began their career at the Division II level
He was 22-8 over his career with the Hawks
“That’s been our philosophy over the last decade
“We have to work harder to find players in different ways
We’re making sure we don’t miss any hidden gems at West Virginia.”

Even in his first inning of work for his new team
the Quincy University transfer showed signs of greatness
It did not take long at all for West Virginia baseball newcomer Griffin Kirn to impress fans
The left-handed pitcher did not waste any time when making his first impression with Mountaineers fans
Kirn was blowing the fastball by hitters in the first inning of the game
WVU (1-0) would secure a 4-2 win over Jacksonville (0-1) and it was Kirn who set the tone for the season in his first appearance with the Mountaineers
After just the first couple of hitters stepped up to bat for the Dolphins
an ESPN+ broadcaster made a comment about Kirn’s fastball -- with no radar gun being available for the broadcast in Jacksonville
the commentator got creative to describe the speed of the pitch
"His fastballs have some life to it,” said the commentator
"You can just tell his fastball has some extra life to it”
only needing seven pitches to set the side down in order while picking up his first strikeout in a WVU uniform
The only blemish in the box score for Kirn was a sacrifice fly he surrendered in the bottom of the fifth
Kirn finished the night with 5.2 innings pitched with 1 H
and 3 BBs -- he threw 73 pitches on Friday night
The senior starter had an impressive three innings where he retired all three hitters to come to the plate in each inning
Kirn had some help from outfielder Armani Guzman in the bottom of the third
Guzman made a terrific diving play in shallow right field to prevent a base runner from reaching base in Kirn’s third inning of work
Kirn was aided by some help from WVU relief pitchers -- first out of the bullpen for WVU was sophomore right-handed pitcher Chase Meyer
Meyer did his job and prevented any runners from scoring in the sixth
Meyer showcased a swoping 12-6 curveball and was heavily reliant on his breaking pitches to be effective Friday night
Next up for WVU was reliever Jack Kartsonas
The Kent State graduate transfer did his fair share of flaunting his skills on the mound
The right-hander went four-up-and-four-down to begin his campaign for WVU

senior Reese Bassinger picked up a double play to end the game using just one pitch
Sam White followed with a base hit of his own
and Sauve ended up at third with some good base running
Kyle West drove in the first run of the game with a RBI ground out
and Michael Perazza followed West with a sacrifice fly for the second run
The defense also looked very good for the opening game of the 2025 season
in addition to the above-mentioned diving play in the third inning
also made a nice catch at the wall in the eighth
Kirn also helped his own cause by getting off the mound quickly and throwing out a runner at first on a bunt play in the sixth
Grant Hussey made a good defensive play at first in the ninth before Bassinger got the double pay to end the game
Steve Sabins got his first win as head coach of WVU on Friday night
After taking over for long-time head coach Randy Mazey
Sabins looks to continue this good run for Mountaineer baseball
Game two of the series is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m

It was the first game of the season series between WVU and Utah but also the first ever game in the all-time history of these two schools. The Utes made the weekend trip to Morgantown and would throw one of the league’s best pitchers, Colter McAnelly, against the Mountaineers.
Griffin Kirn took the mound to start the series for WVU and after both teams were scoreless in the first, Kirn would be taken deep by Drake Digiornio in the second inning to give Utah a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Kirn would retire the side on his way to an impressive 14 strikeouts on the night.
The Mountaineers would go without a hit until the third inning when their first two hits came from back-to-back home runs from Kyle West and Jace Rinehart that gave the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, West Virginia was still holding a 2-1 lead in a pitchers dual. That was until Logan Suave hit his third home run of the season and WVU’s third home run of the game to give the Mountaineers a 3-1 advantage more than halfway through the game.
The defensive battle would continue into the sixth inning when Kirn continued his dominate day striking out the side in order. West Virginia would fail to grow their lead after a couple of pop-outs.
Kirn would allow a single and a double before picking up his 14th and final strikeout of his outing. He would then pulled by head coach Steve Sabins. He finished his day going 6.2 innings while striking out 14 and allowing six hits while walking only one.
Chase Meyer would inherit runners on second and third to replace Kirn and would load up the bases immediately by hitting a batter. That was quickly followed up by a two-RBI single by Austin Roellig to tie the game at 3-3 midway through the seventh inning. Roelligg would finish the game 3-5 at the plate. The runs were added to Kirn’s line, finishing his outing allowing three earned runs.
Meyer would get out of the inning with his first strikeout and the Mountaineers would fail to break to tie before turning it over to the eighth.
Only three batters would come to the plate for Utah in the eighth after a strikeout by Myer, another hit by pitch, and then a double play which ended any rally chance for the Utes.
It was the bottom on the eighth inning that decided the game for the Mountaineers where they would chase McAnelly out of the game after throwing 124 total pitches in 7.1 innings while allowing five hits, four earned runs, and striking out nine.
Meyers was able to close out the ninth inning but not before putting two men on base. Ultimately, it was Meyers’ third strikeout in his 2.1 inning close to secure the win for WVU.
The victory over Utah to start the series improves West Virginia to 25-4 on the season and 5-3 in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers finished the game tallying seven hits to match Utah but had two less errors than the Utes’ three.
Due to expected in climate weather, Sunday’s game in the series has been moved to a double-header on Saturday with the first pitch in the first game set for 1:00 p.m. ET. The second game and series closer will be played immediately after. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+

The transfer southpaw came to WVU this season from the Division 2 level, but is already making waves.

Kirn has looked dominant in his appearances this season
the D2 transfer from Quincy University was able to outdo his first performance
which left many Mountaineer fans very impressed
Kirn’s final line included eight innings pitched
An important takeaway from Kirn’s performance that might not get the attention it deserves-- zero walks
That is something that first-year head coach Sabins must be thrilled to see
After their win on Wednesday over the Ohio Bobcats, walks were appearing to be a moderate issue for the WVU pitching staff
How did Kirn go about correcting that issue
He did it by simply not walking anyone through his eight amazing innings of work Friday
Queens took a 1-0 lead going into the top of second
The one run that Queens was able to plate was unearned
and Kirn shut the door on the Royals offense for the rest of the night
Queens was able to get a runner to third after a failed pick-off attempt led to an error when the ball got away from Grant Hussey on an errant throw from Kirn

Kirn retired 14 consecutive batters stretching from the first inning to the sixth inning before a single ended the stretch of consecutive batters retired

Hussey also got recognition for his defensive efforts in the bottom of the seventh
When a slightly off-line throw from third base pulled Hussey off the bag
the Parkersburg native was able to maneuver off the first base bag
and then apply the tag to the Royals baserunner in time to record the out
ESPN+ commentators quoted Sabins stating that “Hussey was the best defensive first baseman he has coached”
A few baserunning blunders were the lone dark spot for WVU on Friday night
The first inning saw Kresser picked off at second base when dancing to a lead
West was caught stealing after the catcher dropped a strike call
Guzman was thrown out at the plate in the top of the third on a base hit by Kresser

A Floridian surfer was bitten by a shark in Deerfield Beach Monday afternoon and was taken to a hospital with severe wounds to his foot
was surfing north of the Deerfield Beach fishing pier
when a five-foot Spinner shark bit his foot and started to leap from the water
“[Kirn] said he felt the bite and then saw the shark jumping and spinning,” said Mike Jachles, a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman in an interview with The Sun Sentinel Newspaper
“He knew he had to get out of the water.”
Kirn paddled back to shore and was able to reach a lifeguard tower
where he found assistance in slowing the bleeding to his foot
“I saw him walking out of the ocean. Well, not really walking; somebody grabbed him,” said witness Victor Godinho in an interview with Miami's Channel Seven News. “He was bleeding pretty badly
He couldn't walk out; they had to carry him away.”
Medical personnel who tended to Kirn says the surfer was “conscious and alert.”
Kirn was taken to Broward Health North and received 20 stitches to his foot. He is reported to be in “good condition.” The incident occurs after a weekend in which a shark attack in Hawaii sent its victim to the hospital with severe injuries.
