the team back to the Bundesliga which is second in Germany’s second division fired Gerhard Struber as coach on Monday and appointed the 71-year-old Funkel for the last two games of the season It’s Funkel’s third stint in charge at Cologne and his first job since leading Kaiserslautern to the German Cup final last season Funkel has led six teams to Bundesliga promotion – more than any other Cologne was leading the second division with four matches remaining, then lost at Hannover before drawing at home with relegated Jahn Regensburg, which allowed Hamburger SV move top on Saturday The top two are promoted to the Bundesliga Cologne has a three-point lead over third-place Elversberg before it plays Nuremberg and Kaiserslautern for its final two games “Given the big remaining chance of a direct return we have to do everything to take this chance,” Cologne president Werner Wolf said Funkel was relegated from the Bundesliga with Cologne in 2003 during his first stint then clinched survival in 2021 during his second His third will be his 14th coaching appointment after jobs at Neuss, Uerdingen, Duisburg, Rostock, Cologne, Eintracht Frankfurt As we left the event on Sunday afternoon I turned to my fiancé and said “This has probably been the greatest Star Wars event I’ve been too and maybe one of my favourite days as a Star Wars fan.” The event is held in an industrial area of the city and the space is a decent sized venue that covers four or so halls never once did it feel overcrowded or too much To go to this event had been a Christmas gift from Kristina and I’ve always wanted to attend but like some things in life – it just hadn’t panned out it was decked out in stunning style everywhere you looked plenty of space to sit and relax and I’m probably forgetting some things The organizers had spared no expense with the venue props and flags adorned the walls to look like the Empire There are plenty of traders to satisfy your Star Wars collecting needs and I picked up some truly wonderful and unique items including things I didn’t event know existed The prices were all incredibly fair and if I hadn’t had been flying with Ryanair and their infamous bag policy then a good suitcase was needed The line-up was incredible and included Anthony Daniels As always with these events there’s no rush at all and we spoke with Barry for a good five minutes about The Mandalorian He was brilliant to talk too and gave all the fans the time they needed and after a minute of talking to him it felt like we were fast friends The panels here run like a well-oiled machine and give all Star Wars fans an intimate chance to hear from their heroes about a galaxy far Never once to you feel rushed in anyway and any queues or booths are run down to a fine art form it doesn’t feel enough to convey just how much fun I had at this event Everywhere you look there are fans experiencing joy If there’s any concerns about Star Wars surviving in the future then it’s not to be found here in Germany as there are younglings everywhere having the time of their lives Little Lukes and Vaders were battling it out everywhere you looked There’s a fantastic video game area where you can play all sorts of Star Wars games There was event a stall discussing Star Wars and mental health and it was fantastic to see so many people interacting Socialising played a big part in this weekend and it seemed friends old and new had come to hang out have a drink with fellow fans and enjoy themselves was attending Roger Christian’s panel and being in the company of the very first lightsaber ever built From Barry Lowin we learned that no one on the small set learned that Mark Hamill was returning to Star Wars until the day of filming thanks to endless ‘dummy’ scripts and from Grant Feely’s panel we learned that he wasn’t a huge Star Wars fan when he got the job and Deborah Chow asked him to not dive in too deep for research Luke was so disconnected to the main story during the events of Obi-Wan Kenobi that she wanted Grant to remain the same The star of the show here was Anthony Daniels you could see him interacting with fans for his autographs and Kristina commented on just what a gentleman he was being and he was so gracious with fans I’ve met Anthony a couple of times over the decades but I wanted a professional photo with the stalwart of Star Wars and it came out brilliantly loved this event and took in everything one last time I picked up a few bargains to end the day with and it was time to head back to the city for the train to the airport I needed one last run to the loo and who should I bump into for a chit chat at the toilets Only at an event like this would it happen A banner showed that next year’s event is running 16th – 17th May 2026 and I fell in love with this show that much that I’ve already cleared the diary You will not be disappointed with this event Well done to all involved on a triumphant weekend where passion our mission is to deliver everyday cologne for men We recently tested Nautica Voyage and were immediately struck by its refreshing aquatic scent The opening notes of green apple and green leaves create a crisp first impression that feels clean without being overpowering This makes it perfect for office settings or casual outings where you want to smell good without announcing your arrival The heart of this fragrance really shines after about 30 minutes on skin Cedar and marine notes blend together to create that signature “ocean breeze” feeling that Nautica is known for It reminded us of a summer day by the coast – fresh and invigorating The bottle fits comfortably in hand and dispenses just the right amount with each spray Longevity surprised us for a cologne at this price point We got about 5-6 hours of decent performance The scent does stay closer to the skin after the first few hours so you might want to carry a small travel bottle for touch-ups if you’re heading out after work Nautica Voyage delivers excellent value and a universally appealing scent that works across seasons long-lasting fragrance that combines fresh and sweet notes perfect for men who want to make a bold statement We recently got our hands on the Versace Eros cologne and were immediately struck by its eye-catching blue bottle The design feels substantial and luxurious in hand exactly what you’d expect from the Versace brand The scent itself opens with a bright minty freshness that quickly gives way to sweet apple notes we noticed the vanilla and tonka bean base notes becoming more prominent This evolution makes Eros interesting throughout the day but this one maintained its presence even after 8 hours of wear RASASI Hawas delivers an exceptional aquatic fragrance with impressive longevity at a price that makes it a smart addition to any man’s cologne collection We recently got our hands on RASASI Hawas and were immediately impressed by its captivating blend of fresh and sweet notes The opening hits with crisp apple and citrus that quickly settles into a more complex mix featuring orange blossom and cardamom the scent evolution is noticeable and sophisticated The staying power of this fragrance truly stands out We applied just two sprays in the morning and could still detect the scent well into the evening This impressive longevity makes it an excellent value proposition compared to many designer brands costing twice as much The sillage (scent trail) is moderate but present drawing compliments without overwhelming others in the room The bottle design adds a touch of luxury with its python-textured stopper and elegant gray glass While primarily marketed as an aquatic scent we found it versatile enough for year-round use It performs exceptionally well in warmer weather but doesn’t disappear in cooler conditions For men seeking a signature scent that works across multiple settings – from office to date night – RASASI Hawas delivers remarkable performance at a surprisingly accessible price point Armani Acqua di Giò is a timeless cologne that offers a perfect balance of fresh aquatic scents and deeper woody notes that make it suitable for nearly any occasion We’ve been fans of Acqua di Giò for years and it’s easy to see why this fragrance has remained so popular the initial burst of bergamot and citrus notes was immediately refreshing The scent settled nicely into subtle jasmine and marine notes that aren’t too overpowering The cologne has impressive staying power for a fresh fragrance We noticed it lasted through most of our workday without becoming too faint The 100ml bottle is well-designed with clean lines that look sophisticated on any bathroom counter Its aquatic profile makes it perfect for spring and summer months What truly sets this cologne apart is its versatility We wore it during important meetings and casual outings and cedarwood creates a masculine depth that evolves beautifully throughout the day While it’s certainly an investment piece we believe the classic appeal and quality formulation make Acqua di Giò worth considering for any man’s fragrance collection This refreshing cologne offers a perfect balance of citrus and woody notes that makes it ideal for everyday wear or special occasions We recently tested Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue Pour Homme and were impressed by its crisp The 2.5-ounce bottle packs a punch with its blend of Sicilian mandarin These top notes create an immediate fresh sensation that isn’t overwhelming The middle and base notes reveal themselves gradually throughout the day and musk become more prominent after a few hours of wear but Light Blue maintained its presence well into the evening without requiring reapplication What makes this cologne stand out is its versatility. We’ve worn it during business meetings and casual outings, receiving compliments in both settings. The portable size makes it convenient for travel or keeping in a gym bag While the price is higher than some alternatives the quality and longevity of the scent make it worth the investment for men seeking a signature everyday fragrance This affordable cologne delivers a sophisticated blend of spices and black vanilla that rivals much pricier options We recently tested the Cremo Spice & Black Vanilla cologne and were genuinely impressed by its performance The initial spray releases vibrant spice notes that grab attention without overwhelming the senses woody heart that feels sophisticated and masculine The most surprising aspect was how the black vanilla base notes emerged several hours into wear This three-stage scent evolution isn’t something we typically find in colognes at this price point We applied it before a full workday and could still detect subtle notes by evening though it does stay closer to the skin after about 5-6 hours For men seeking an everyday signature scent without breaking the bank this Cremo offering delivers exceptional value The fragrance feels appropriate for both office settings and casual outings While it doesn’t have the projection or complexity of high-end designer colognes costing four times as much it performs remarkably well for its price category and receives compliments consistently This elegant Italian fragrance offers a unique blend of floral and herbal notes that stands out from typical men’s colognes We recently tried Versace The Dreamer and were immediately impressed by its distinctive character The 3.4 oz bottle delivers a captivating mix of fresh and slightly sweet notes that evolve nicely throughout the day It’s not your typical men’s cologne offering something more refined and sophisticated The fragrance opens with bright notes that feel clean and fresh We found it versatile enough for office settings but also perfect for evening occasions Several people around us commented positively on the scent which speaks to its ability to make an impression without overwhelming What makes The Dreamer stand out is how it balances masculine energy with a touch of sweetness. The Italian craftsmanship shows in the quality and longevity of the scent this one maintains its presence throughout the day For men looking to distinguish themselves with something beyond the ordinary this Versace offering deserves serious consideration This Versace sampler set offers great value for men who want to explore different high-end fragrances before committing to a full bottle We recently tested this Versace cologne sampler set and were impressed by the variety of scents packed into these mini bottles and Eau Fraiche – giving you a tour of Versace’s most popular men’s fragrances which is enough to get a real feel for how the cologne performs on your skin The compact size makes these perfect for travel or keeping in your gym bag a little goes a long way with these concentrated formulas The scents themselves are authentic and potent delivering the same luxury experience as their full-sized counterparts Eros stands out with its bold vanilla and mint notes while Dylan Blue offers a more sophisticated woody aroma One slight drawback is that only one bottle features a spray applicator – the rest require dabbing While some might find the price a bit steep for samples we believe it’s worthwhile for anyone serious about finding their signature Versace scent before investing in a full bottle These mini colognes let you experiment with different fragrances for different occasions from casual daytime wear to evening events This luxurious men’s cologne offers a perfect balance of spicy and sweet notes that make it worth every penny for special occasions. We recently got our hands on the Azzaro Most Wanted Parfum, and it immediately stood out from other colognes in our collection. The black bottle isn’t just for show – it houses a truly memorable fragrance that combines spicy fougère with warm vanilla and incandescent woods. This cologne quickly became our go-to for date nights and special events. The first spray reveals a bold mix of red ginger that gradually settles into a more complex scent. We noticed that a little goes a long way with this parfum. Just two sprays lasted throughout an entire evening, which helps justify the price tag. The French craftsmanship really shows in how the scent layers and develops over time. During colder months, this fragrance truly shines. The bourbon vanilla notes provide a sweet undertone that balances perfectly with the spicier elements. While it might be too heavy for summer wear, we found it perfect for fall and winter occasions when you want to make a statement. The compliments we received while wearing it confirmed what we already knew – Azzaro has created something special with this parfum. We recommend Versace Eros for men seeking a bold, long-lasting fragrance that stands out in any setting. When we first tried Versace Eros, we were immediately struck by its powerful opening notes. The fragrance has a distinctive mint and apple combination that feels both refreshing and masculine. Many colognes fade quickly, but this one maintains its presence for 7-8 hours. The bottle design reflects the premium Versace brand with its bright turquoise color and Medusa logo. It fits comfortably in hand and the spray mechanism distributes just the right amount of cologne. Though smaller than some options at 1.7 ounces, the concentrated formula means you need fewer sprays. We’ve worn this to both office settings and evening events with great success. The scent evolves nicely throughout the day, starting with those fresh top notes before settling into a warmer vanilla base. Men of all ages seem to appreciate this fragrance, making it a safe gift choice too. The compliments received when wearing Eros confirm its reputation as a crowd-pleaser. Choosing the right cologne can be tricky. We’ve created this guide to help you find the perfect scent for your needs. Fragrances fall into several main categories. Knowing these can help you narrow down your preferences. The concentration affects how long a scent lasts and how much you should apply. Never purchase without testing the cologne on your skin first. Fragrances react differently with each person’s body chemistry. Try a small amount on your wrist and give it time to develop. The scent will change over several hours. Different scents work better in different weather. Lighter, fresher scents suit summer, while warmer, spicier notes are better for winter. Quality colognes range widely in price. Consider cost per wear – an expensive fragrance you love and wear often may be a better value than a cheaper one you rarely use. Finding the perfect cologne can be challenging with so many options available. We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions men ask when searching for their ideal scent. The top-rated men’s colognes in 2025 include Dior Sauvage, Bleu de Chanel, and Tom Ford Ombré Leather. Creed Aventus continues to receive excellent reviews for its pineapple and smoky notes. Versace Eros and YSL Y Eau de Parfum round out the list with their modern appeal. These fragrances consistently earn high marks from both critics and consumers for their quality and appeal. Parfums de Marly Layton and Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille are known for lasting 8+ hours on skin. Dior Sauvage Elixir and Creed Aventus also provide excellent staying power throughout the day. For strong projection, consider Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male or Versace Eros. These colognes leave a noticeable scent trail without becoming overwhelming. Middle Eastern-inspired fragrances like Initio Oud for Greatness and Amouage Interlude Man often offer exceptional performance in both categories. Creed stands out with its handcrafted approach and prestigious heritage. Tom Ford offers sophisticated luxury fragrances that blend boldness with refinement. Parfums de Marly and Maison Francis Kurkdjian represent modern luxury with their innovative compositions. Roja Dove and Amouage create opulent scents with rare ingredients for the discerning gentleman. These brands justify their higher price points with quality ingredients, craftsmanship, and distinctive character. Versace Eros and Prada Luna Rossa Carbon appeal to younger men with their fresh, energetic profiles. Armani Code Absolu offers a sweet, date-night friendly option that’s popular among 18-25 year olds. Montblanc Explorer provides a versatile, affordable alternative to more expensive scents. Calvin Klein CK One remains a minimalist classic for those entering the fragrance world. Young adults often appreciate these colognes for their modern appeal and versatility across different settings. Dior Eau Sauvage (1966) remains a benchmark for citrus aromatic fragrances even after decades. Chanel Pour Monsieur (1955) exemplifies timeless French elegance with its refined chypre structure. Guerlain Habit Rouge (1965) pioneered the oriental fragrance category for men. Old Spice (1937), though more accessible, maintains its place as an iconic masculine scent. These classics have influenced countless modern fragrances and continue to be worn by men of all ages. Bleu de Chanel works excellently as a signature scent due to its versatility and mass appeal. Dior Homme Intense offers a sophisticated iris-based alternative that stands out subtly. For something uniquely recognizable, Terre d’Hermès combines earthy and citrus notes in a distinctive way. Tom Ford Grey Vetiver provides a clean, professional profile perfect for daily wear. We recommend testing potential signature scents in different settings before committing, as a true signature should feel comfortable in most situations. Will & Emery The Chairman of the General Works Council of Ford in Germany has warned of the insolvency of Ford’s German subsidiary and is thus preparing the workforce for the gradual closure of the main plant in Cologne The background to the warning by Gruschka and the IG Metall union is the cancellation of an agreement with the US parent company that had been in place since 2006 to compensate for losses incurred by its subsidiary in Europe the company headquarters has announced a final financial support for Ford Europe totalling €4.4 billion explained that Ford would use the “new capital” to promote the transformation of its business in Europe and strengthen its “competitiveness with a new product range.” However but rather new attacks: “To be successful in Europe in the long term we must continue to simplify our structures he called on the European Union and the German government to do more to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and reduce costs in order to compete with Chinese rivals The works council and IG Metall will support the “tough decisions,” as they did with the closure of the Ford plant in Saarlouis and enforce them against the workforce The works council is currently negotiating with the company on the conclusion of a so-called “social collective agreement,” i.e Ford plans to cut 4,000 jobs in Europe by 2027 with 2,900 of them at the Cologne plant alone According to broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk the model for this social collective agreement “is likely to be the plant closure in Saarlouis where the last car will roll off the production line at the end of the year and it was possible to negotiate high severance payments for some of the employees.” The Ford workforce in Cologne should be alarmed The start of negotiations on a social collective agreement in Saarlouis signalled the final end for the plant The broadcaster says that there are no signs of hope that production will continue in Cologne “Only marginal numbers of the current expensive and large electric cars are being sold So what exactly is the works council in Cologne currently negotiating head of the shop stewards’ committee at the Ford plant in Niehl called the cancellation of the letter of intent a “very dirty trick.” The plan was to “put pressure on the works council in the worst possible way to get them to agree to the planned change in operations.” There is much to suggest that the IG Metall and its works council reps are already negotiating the closure or at least partial closure of the Cologne plant The works council will claim that the operational change concerns the 2,900 jobs that will be cut in Cologne But is this the “operational change” that Lüdke is talking about Industrial relations law describes various measures that count as a change in operations: the “reduction and closure [or relocation] of the entire operation or significant parts of the operation,” the “merger with other operations or the splitting of operations,” “fundamental changes to the organisation of the operation the purpose of the operation or the operating facilities” and the “introduction of fundamentally new working methods and production processes.” In any case—as can be seen from the statements made by the union representatives—Ford wants to end the exclusion of compulsory redundancies the company would now expose the Cologne site to an acute risk of insolvency according to the union,” says Westdeutscher Rundfunk The exclusion of “compulsory redundancies” is being used by IG Metall to push through the biggest attacks the union used this argument to agree the destruction of 35,000 jobs—more than one in four—and a reduction in real wages of up to 20 percent Gruschka also hints at similar and even greater attacks In an interview with industry weekly Automobilwoche he says that the withdrawal of the letter of intent means that “the Ford Motor Company is withdrawing the insolvency protection of its German subsidiary from the parent company.” He told the press that in view of the low sales figures for electric cars produced in Cologne the question was on the table as to how bills would be paid in future if the US parent company did not guarantee them insolvency and the loss of more than ten thousand jobs would be imminent The works council planned to inform the workforce at a factory meeting Wednesday and has called for a protest meeting outside the Ford premises on Saturday The works council is just as unwilling to defend jobs in Cologne as it is in Saarlouis It sees its role as implementing the attacks demanded by the company The IG Metall representatives around Gruschka are already positioning themselves to prevent effective resistance which can only be successful if conducted internationally The closure of the plant in Saarlouis was achieved not least by pitting workers there against those in Almussafes (Valencia) in Spain 9,000 jobs at Ford and its suppliers have been destroyed; in Almussafes fewer than 3,000 jobs remain out of more than 9,300 we wrote: “While the IG Metall was organising the closure of the Ford plant in Saarlouis it kept the workforce in Cologne quiet with the promise that the investment of two billion euros in the Cologne plant and the switch to pure e-car production would secure their future Now that the plant in Saarlouis has largely been shut down This is why the head of the General Works Council is now trying to divide Ford employees in Germany from the European workforce It is a disadvantage for the German Ford-Werke GmbH that the weak sales of all Ford passenger cars in Europe are booked via its balance sheet while the profitable commercial vehicle business—Ford has been the market leader in Europe here for years—is handled via the books of Ford’s British subsidiary likens the German Ford plants in this constellation to a “bad bank.” The “end of the comprehensive guarantee for the German Ford organisation could lead to a concentration of Ford’s loss-making activities in Europe in German Ford Werke GmbH.” This would be similar to the concept of a bad bank in which all the risky and poorly performing business units are bundled together in one company in order to protect the entire group from the insolvency risk of a subsidiary Romanian or Turkish workers against each other Ford hopes to be able to impose the consequences of trade war on the workforce The all-out economic war that President Donald Trump is escalating is leading to huge attacks on workers all over the world, including Europe and in the US itself. It is being fought on the backs of workers. Trade war will inevitably lead to a shooting war if the international working class does not intervene. That is why the next German government is preparing an armaments programme costing billions IG Metall and its works council reps are lining up behind “their” government as well as “their” corporations on this issue War and massive job destruction are directly linked it is necessary to organise independently—from IG Metall and its works councils as well as from all capitalist parties and their appendages that in one way or another support the insane policy of rearmament and war From the outset, the Ford Action Committee, which was formed against the “bidding war“ between Saarlouis and Almussafes on the initiative of the WSWS has opposed the conspiracy of the works council It has insisted that a new political orientation is needed to resist the blackmail of management and the works council a perspective based on the common interests of all workers opposed to the logic of the capitalist profit system that union officials defend tooth and nail Send a Whatsapp message to the following number: +491633378340 and fill in the form below to take action now What on earth is that man doing with his tie Statement jackets and the latest sneakers are always going to be top of men's lust lists A foundation on which flashier styles are built Most people say it's your footwear that is the first thing people fix their eyes on - but we'd argue,.. budget but each operates in service of the same fundamental goal: helping you smell really good Cologne formulations differ substantially from one scent to the next but what unites the greatest of the genre is their ability to smartly punctuate your personality—and enhance everyone else’s experience while they’re at it too (if you’ve ever been stuck in the elevator with a colleague doused in Axe you know exactly what we mean) so it’s especially important to choose wisely and the guy at your local bodega associate with you Regardless of what you’re looking for in a cologne—an everyday go-to, a gloomy-day pick-me-up, a special-occasion statement-maker—there’s a superlative, compliment-eliciting option here with your name on it, each one sprayed, tested, and ultimately loved by us. Vibe: Sophisticated architect | Key Notes: Citrus, fig, woods Vibe: Worldly polo player | Key Notes: Pine, patchouli, leather, tobacco Why we love it: There’s a reason the original Polo continues to hold strong nearly half a century into its existence: It manages to be both sexy and professional, a versatile woody-aromatic scent that works in almost every context. Better yet, because there are so many remixes of the OG, wearing the version that started it all still feels as refreshing as the latest launch. Vibe: Self-aware creative director | Key Notes: Patchouli, lavender, tonka bean, balsam Vibe: Happy-go-lucky teenage heartthrob | Key Notes: Citrus Vibe: That mid-shower moment of mental clarity (but the shower overlooks an ocean) | Key Notes: Citrus, neroli, ginger, black tea Why we love it: I legitimately get goosebumps every time I smell Louis Vuitton's flagship EDP, a tingle in my scalp that sends serotonin surging through my veins. Before I encountered it, I never thought a scent could make me feel like the gravity had left my body. To put it in less poetic terms: If I had to choose one scent to wear for the rest of my life, it'd probably be this. Vibe: The coolest account manager at the fanciest marketing agency | Key Notes: Lavender Why we love it: Every time I wear Tom Ford's Beau de Jour, I feel like I'm cosplaying as a genteel man-about-town. (Joke's on you: I hate the opera.) More realistically, though, I feel like a writer who hits all of his deadlines with zero notes from my editors, who are all very proud of me. That's exactly what it's supposed to do: turn you into the best version of yourself. Vibe: Dude who swears he “isn’t wearing anything!” | Key Note: Iso E Super Why we love it: This scent might be the most famous “no-fragrance fragrance” on the market; its Iso E Super molecule expresses itself differently on each wearer. You can layer it with another fragrance or let it mix with your skin's natural chemistry for an oh-so-subtle effect. Some folks won’t notice a thing, others will instantly demand to know what you're wearing. Vibe: A Saturday at home with your boo | Key Notes: Green tea, musk, lemon, jasmine Why we love it: By any metric, this is the unisex cologne. It’s great for couples who share scents, especially when both parties prefer wearing something down the middle. I think of CK One as the perfect weekend warrior, too—when all I want to throw on is a beefy hoodie and shades, it's mine to enjoy. Vibe: Hot tennis instructor | Key Notes: Vetiver Vibe: Showering at a 5-star hotel | Key Notes: Mint, geranium, patchouli Why we love it: No scent is fresher than this. Wearing it is like stepping out of the best shower of your life, wrapping yourself in the plushest robe on the planet, and ordering room service on the company tab. It might be a pinch too buoyant for some fellas, but it’s catnip for anyone who might be in the suite (or, heck, the shower) with you when that room service arrives. Vibe: Math professor who’s kind of a babe | Key Notes: Rose, sandalwood, vetiver, shiso Why we love it: Whenever I wear Rōzu, I swear that some of my high school AP Calculus knowledge comes back into focus. It sounds corny, but it really does make me feel, well, smarter. Maybe I should give the debate team another go after all. Vibe: The movie producer everyone’s talking about at Cannes | Key Notes: Licorice, lavender, nutmeg Why we love it: Of all the Sauvage expressions out there, Elixir excites me the most. I find it perfect for the colder months of the year, the darker half of the day, and any date nights throughout. It has a nice bite, too—a signature licorice-tinged zing that makes it memorable. Memorable on date night…that’s a decent sell, no? Vibe: DILF at a PTA meeting | Key Notes: Leather, sandalwood, incense Why we love it: Malin+Goetz has conjured an approachable—dare we say…polite?—way to wear leather, while still announcing to the world that you are, in fact, just as confident as you are sexy. I love that this expression offers so many notes besides just raw, dripping leather. Despite that sex appeal, though, nobody will call you out for wearing it to the hardware store (or in the middle of May). Vibe: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine on a Tinder date in Calgary | Key Notes: Musk, vanilla, amber, sandalwood Why we love it: Musc Ravageur is aptly named, in that it evokes exactly what it advertises: musk-infused sex appeal—but in a playful enough manner that won't overwhelm your date. I wouldn’t wear it to the office, but I would wear it if I wanted to suggest—politely, of course—to someone special that I have the place to myself that evening. It’s a nice way to broadcast your complexity without coming on too strong, if you catch my musky drift. YSL's latest fragrance also happens to be one of its best. This woody-floral number is an excellent everyday fragrance that's bright and warming, able to easily transition from day to night. If you fear that a vanilla-forward scent might make you smell like a box of Betty Crocker, then you'll be pleasantly surprised by Guerlain's Spiritueuse Double Vanille. It's vanilla-forward for sure, but it's been expertly balanced to smell more like bourbon than pound cake thanks to a hefty dose of amber and cedar. For most who are getting into colognes, Creed is their entryway into the luxury scent game. It's overtly citrus on the front, but it's balanced out by lavender and geranium—two amazing floral notes—before the lasting impression is of cedarwood and oakmoss. This musky number from Diptyque is just the right amount of flowery to justify its name. It's also fruity and sweet, but not so much where it feels like you've been running through a valley of roses. Woody and citrus notes come together to create a scent that's like a refreshing dip in the lake during the spring and this one is exceptionally well designed to be appealing for all noses “Fragrances are not only part of our lives: they’re as individual as a favorite song or pair of jeans.” Here's how to zero in on the best signature scent for you Familiarizing yourself with scent families and key olfactive notes is a great starting point—as is understanding which ones work best as “everyday” scents which work across most occasions and tend to be less polarizing the same notes can manifest differently depending on how they're employed—so it’s also important to understand a scent's ever-elusive vibe Is it designed to transport you to the sun-dappled beaches of a private island Or conjure memories of a rainy day spent indoors If you're looking for an everyday scent steer clear of any vibes that immediately read as overly powerful or expressive This one's simple: If you like how someone smells You don't need to jack their signature scent wholesale but compliments have a way of loosening people's lips—and they might put you onto a fragrance that feels more distinctly you.Use the web if you want few options in the starting lineup once you land on a star player Ever wondered about the difference between an “EDT” and an “EDP” It's not actually all that complicated The primary differentiator comes down to the percentage of perfumed oils used in the product which dictates how brands classify their scents we tend to treat “cologne” as a catchall term for any men’s fragrance the term is just one of many you should know about Very few fragrances are true eau fraiches these days; those that are classified as such will last for just an hour or two We tend to refer to the broader category of men’s scents as “colognes," even when they don’t fall in this range Shop in this range or higher if you want a scent to perform past lunchtime the translation from French is literally “toilet water” We promise you'll still smell great.) This wide range of concentrations makes EDPs the hardest category to predict in terms of longevity and performance an EDP should be noticeably stronger than an EDT Parfums tend to be in the 15-30% perfume concentration range but they can climb up to 40% before a brand switches to “pure parfum oil” Some extraits and parfums are described as “eternal”—but remember that’s not necessarily what you should be looking for The classifications above aren't an exact science but the concentration levels they allude to are a solid indicator of where to set your expectations oud smells exactly like you think it would: woodsy It's a commonly beloved fragrance note for men but when paired with something sweeter or more floral it helps to add a depth that's great for all people What's bitter in taste is actually quite sweet and delicious on the nose Bergamot offers a fine citrus note that's fresh on the nose and when it's paired with something like oud there's a wonderful dissonance that makes you think about your fragrance all day long vetiver has a distinct smoky aroma to it that's often compared to incense or cigar smoke The same reason that “leather” is a positive attribute when describing wine Think more vintage sofa than ratty old handbag though and that's what you'll get when you douse yourself in this intoxicating scent which was once harvested from the glands of the musk deer and it's often described as earthy and sweet neroli offers more of a “green” tinge than bergamot so it smells like freshly cut grass that might've seen an accident of spilled orange juice patchouli is often associated with bad smells patchouli-forward scents are a complex blend of wood One of the more floral fragrance notes there is orris has a sweet flower-like aroma that can be balanced out by some darker heavier notes to cancel out any reminders of grandma's old perfume you'll get something that leans more vanilla Testing colognes is one of the best parts of this gig Writing for GQ affords me access to new scents as soon as—and sometimes well before—they hit the market; at any given point in time my personal collection includes dozens of gleaming Testing all of them is a full-time job in and of itself so I keep on ongoing tally of which formulas feel best for which occasions (You'd be surprised by how many of them don't pass the simplest sniff test regardless of where I'd wear 'em.) I kept a particularly close eye on context and budget; not every guy wears cologne the same way or for the same reasons and the breadth and depth of this list is designed to reflect those differences I evaluated each winning pick on the basis of its universal appeal factoring in a mix of opinions from my sources in the fragrance community to ensure that every scent included here will leave its wearer looking—and feeling—like the absolute best version of himself to solicit her insights on signature scents and fragrance wardrobes the best men’s cologne for year-round wear is Le Labo Thé Matcha 26 which imbues a smart and sophisticated formula with a welcome dose of subtle sex appeal We consider it the platonic signature scent for its four-season versatility too—it's ideally suited for professional and personal settings Fragrance notes evaporate over time and aromas can change so if you're trying a new cologne for the first time “It’s important to let the fragrance dry-down on skin [before making a final decision],” says Zagwolsky “Wait a few hours and smell your skin again If you can imagine yourself wearing this fragrance for a certain occasion or [a specific] mood What is one underrated fragrance family that men should consider Zagwolsky recommends trying gourmand fragrances, like vanilla colognes, which are often perceived as cold-weather-oriented. Many vanilla scents, Zagwolsky says, can be worn year-round, too. Look for notes that that make you drool, like vanilla, chocolate, almond, honey, and caramel. Lamar Jackson’s Night Lights cologne permeated the locker room and the media room and probably the meeting rooms as well after players and media members tested the star quarterback’s unisex scent at the request of The Baltimore Banner. On the field Jackson has earned an impressive salary, but he’s got a variety of business interests, as well. He’s made an effort to market himself more, with Gatorade ads that greet drivers heading to M&T Bank Stadium to complement various projects with Complex Sports and GQ that have gone viral on social media.  In one of the latest videos, published by GQ Jackson took viewers through his 10 essential things He also included items he has produced in his own business ventures The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one. Jackson explains why he created his own scent like something real soft,” Jackson said in the video “So that’s what made me want to create something unisex Jackson explained that he was brought a few combinations by Crafting Beauty which manufactured the scent for Era 8 Apparel Spoiler alert: The cologne includes notes of neroli Jackson sprays the scent and cherry blossoms appear in the background while birds chirp The Banner was curious if Night Lights is, in fact, wonderful. So we bought a bottle (it’s $90 on the Era 8 Apparel website). The original idea was to test the cologne with reporters, but when some of Jackson’s teammates caught wind of it, they wanted in, too. So on New Year’s Eve, while the team practiced, the reporters — men and women alike; it’s unisex, after all — got the chance to test Night Lights and walked into the media availability smelling like Lamar Jackson. In the locker room, safety Kyle Hamilton was first up, but he was reluctant to spray it on himself. Then wide receivers Rashod Bateman and Nelson Agholor got involved and talked it up, prompting Hamilton to change his tune.  Soon players from every corner of the locker room were testing the scent players and even the volunteer firemen and equipment managers were stopping by for a spritz All agreed he did a good job of making it unisex their opinions were all from the male side There are not yet females on any NFL rosters to confirm it but the three female reporters provided a small sample guessed it would be floral if it was feminine This reporter guessed it would have some spice to it “He did pretty good with the unisex part.” Giana Han giana.han@thebaltimorebanner.com Giana Han is a Ravens beat reporter from Howard County Welcome to The Banner's subscriber-only commenting community.
