Making the relatively short journey to the capital
RB Leipzig shared a point apiece with Union Berlin at Stadion An der Alten Försterei for Saturday's Toppspiel.
With both sides carrying contrasting ambitions
Leipzig move back into the top four with a point after Stuttgart's loss against Borussia Mönchengladbach this afternoon
who travel to Leverkusen on Sunday afternoon
the endeavour and grit of the hosts left Marco Rose's Leipzig side with a lot to work on moving into the second period.
With eight shots compared to the two of Die Roten Bullen
Union certainly got the better of Leipzig in regards to the top end of the pitch throughout the opening period.
the visitors were inches away from finding the back of the net in the 40th minute
when Xavi Simons dinked the onrushing Frederik Rønnow before hitting the post
replays revealed that there would have been a tight decision to be made had the ball nestled in the back of Rønnow's net.
Antonio Nusa's arrival in the second half brought a much-needed spark in the early stages of the second half
he played a huge part as the visitors believed that they had taken the lead ten minutes into the half after exquisitely assisting Benjamin Sesko who fired home
Benedict Hollerbach had a huge chance for Union in the 67th minute after finding space in the box
Union's Achilles heel all season long has been their action in front of goal
it was proving to be a similar story for Die Eisernen
whilst playing some fantastic football in transition
Tonight's clash was almost a throwback to the Union Berlin side of two years ago.
whilst not being on their way to reaching European football
all of the grit and willingness to do the hard yards expected of the Köpenick side was present in abundance.
Without producing an opportunity of note as the encounter reached its closing stages
Leipzig suffered as the decibels in Berlin continued to rise.
the hosts came agonisingly close to snatching all three points after a self-made scramble from Leipzig's Gulacsi inside the box
neither Jordan nor Lucas Tousart were able to stab the ball home.
it was hard to argue that a draw wasn't a fair result between these two sides this evening

FC Union Berlin’s men’s team face their next crucial Bundesliga fixture as they host Kieler SV Holstein
Kick off in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei stadium is at 15:30
will travel to Köpenick in the hope of increasing their dwindling chances of Bundesliga safety
by closing the gap on the non-relegation places
the team's head coach Marcel Rapp and his players are the only team still waiting for their first three points of the second half of the season
they have only managed two draws – the 2-2s against Wolfsburg and Bochum - and four defeats
are out for redemption after last weekend's resounding 6-0 loss at Borussia Dortmund
looking to build on their strong home defence
have the third-best home record at the back behind Bayern München with nine
As the newest member in German football’s top league
the “storks” have been fighting to stay up since the start of the season
With the exception of match days two and three
Kiel have only ever seen the rest of the league from the bottom of the table
The main reason for this is their away form
with only three points taken from the last eleven games on the road
where they have the third-worst record with only ten points
A glimmer of hope lies in the fact that with 34 goals scored
Kiel have the best attack in the lower third of the table and are even on a par with many of those in the upper half
Shuto Machino and Phil Harres are largely responsible for this
Both the five-time Japanese international and the 22-year-old shooting star have already scored seven times this season
the side from the Hanseatic port have been all at sea
with goalkeepers Timon Weiner and Thomas Dähne having to pluck the ball out of the net 59 times already – the highest number in the league
Sunday will be the tenth time that the two clubs have met in a competitive game
Of the eight previous duels in the Regionalliga Nord and the 2
and was the third 2-0 win in a row between the two teams

he had appeared in 35 games for Kiel and played a major role in their promotion
scoring four goals and providing ten assists
having played a total of 16 times for Kiel in the second half of the 2018/19 season
the now 32-year-old played 229 times for various sides
Union's head coach Steffen Baumgart will not be able to call on Oluwaseun Ogbemudia
“We are playing against a team that have had similar results to us recently,” said Union head coach
during his pre-game press conference on Friday
They are a team that score a lot of goals but also concede a lot
The important thing is that we want to win at home.”
said meanwhile: “We are fully convinced that we can go to Berlin and get something out of it
the Stadion An der Alten Försterei opens two hours before kick-off
the game is sold out in both the home and away sectors
There are still extensive traffic disruptions in the public transport system
and travel via the ‘Altstadt Köpenick’ tram route is only possible with the replacement service
All fans are therefore advised to arrive early

In 1730 the Prussian king and his eldest son had become so estranged from each other that the Crown Prince decided to flee abroad
Crown Prince Friedrich was brought before a war court in the Köpenick Palace where he
fought for their lives. The story has many sides to it: personal drama
Over the course of twelve thematic sequences
the exhibition depicts the dramatic turn of events and illustrates their historical significance
both on the individuals involved and on the nation as a whole
as well as how they have been interpreted in art and literature
The dramatic high point of the exhibition is the sentence passed by the Köpenick war court: its members voted steadfastly against the express wishes of King Friedrich Wilhelm I
who then felt bound to overrule them with his own decision as to Katte's fate and the heir to the throne. The exhibition is being held as part of a wider series of events called 'Art - King - Enlightenment'
coordinated by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in honour of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Frederick the Great on 24 January 2012

Oliver Igel moved even closer towards the Technology Park
This is due to construction work at Köpenick City Hall
which forced the district mayor of Treptow-Köpenick and his department to make a temporary move to the Allianz Campus in Adlershof
Before Igel and his staff gradually move back into the historic building
we talked to him about his current neighbourhood
Oliver Igel: We have been very well received here
Thanks to our move to Technology Park Adlershof
we have been given the unique opportunity to become part of a dynamic and future-oriented environment—in addition to the colleagues that have been based here already
The vicinity to innovative companies and leading research institutions has not only enriched the way we work but also opened up new perspectives on collaboration and knowledge exchange
We especially appreciate the vibrant community here in Adlershof
Being able to walk to many appointments is also great
I was lucky enough to visit a variety of companies
JENOPTIK Optical Systems GmbH in their new building
or the commercial and industrial courtyards along Gerhard-Sedlmayr-Strasse
or Riot Games—these and many others were real highlights
I am also happy to see that Adlershof is thinking “bigger”
be it through close cooperation with Berlin-Chemie AG or the expansion of Gleislinse area
which now extends all the way to Johannisthal S-Bahn station
A remarkable place where history and modernity meet
The square lies at the heart of Technology Park Adlershof and is lined by restaurants
and the institutes of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
I really enjoy the short way across the S-Bahn bridge into Alt-Adlershof with its historic town centre
Adlershof is celebrating its 270-year anniversary this year
the area around Dörpfeldstrasse has been included in the “Lively Centres and Quarters” funding programme
which was previously named “Active Centres”
These developments are part of a comprehensive urban development programme that aims at modernising the centre of Adlershof and enhancing its appeal
The redesign of the marketplace and Dörpfeldstrasse will improve the quality of life in Adlershof in the years to come and strengthen the local economy
There will be no future for the Marktpassagen shopping mall
It will give way to a new residential quarter
The Treptow-Köpenick district is unique and diverse
People who come here can hardly believe that they are in the middle of a major city
and culture make Treptow-Köpenick a very attractive place to live
It's important that we keep that going—that’s progress
my ideal is a district that is ecologically responsible
provides efficient transportation solutions
These are the pillars that will make Treptow-Köpenick a liveable and future-oriented place for everyone

He sold to Peter Brenske in 2010 and since 2012 he was competed by Natalia Soujon
The Waldsee based Paulina Rohr purchased the stallion at the end of September 2013
At the time she trained with German judge Dr
The pair made its national show debut in October 2013 at M-level
In 2014 they moved up to small tour and qualified for the 2014 German Young Riders Championships in Zeiskam
where they unfortunately had to withdraw after the stallion knocked himself in the warm up
They were reserve regional champion that year
Paulina Rohr and KöpenickThey did not compete in 2015 but returned to the arena in 2016 and became regional champion of Rheinland Pfalz
They mainly rode at regional shows through 2017 and rode up to Inter I level
Köpenick was retired from sport at the end 2018 at the age of 17

Strabag Group entities will start construction of the new station in spring next year
Strabag Rail has received a contract worth around €154m from DB Netz to overhaul the Köpenick rail station in south-east Berlin for regional railway operations in Germany
Serving as a crucial element of Berlin’s transport concept
the new station is part of the project to upgrade the west-east corridor from Berlin to the Polish border near Frankfurt
Along with Strabag
Strabag Rail is involved in comprehensive modernisation works of the corridor
The scope of the contract also includes the renewal of about a 3km section of track
which will mostly run parallel to the S-Bahn line
A passing loop will serve as a better connection between Berlin’s outer ring and the west-east corridor besides two new tracks for regional rail traffic
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
The project also involves building a nearly 220m long regional service platform with three new entrances
the works include the renewal and modernisation of five railway bridges
and 18,000m² of noise barriers over a length of around 4km besides upgrades to the overhead lines
the new railway line will reduce travel time between the cities of Magdeburg
and Frankfurt (Oder) by enabling trains to operate at maximum speeds of 160 km/h
Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: “The upgrade of Köpenick station is not only important for Berlin’s transport concept
but also creates an improved rail connection to Eastern Europe
further helping to lay the foundation for a modern
“We are very happy that DB Netz AG has once again placed its trust in our railway construction expertise.”

Kat Frankie beantwortete dem Maulbeerblatt einige Fragen:
I spent a lot of time writing my lyrics because I have to sing them
The most important thing for me is to be emotionally honest
There's a few recurring themes in Pocketknife
this concept of being seduced by something that is a lie (and you know it's a lie but you want to believe it anyway)
the things people hide from each other and lots of other stuff about desire and loss
That probably sounds a little depressing perhaps
but for me all of these songs are quite hopeful
Listening to a big loud angry break-up song can fill you with lots of energy
Even ‘Treading Water' which is a song about becoming old and mediocre and bitter
is more like a re-inforcement of living your life in the moment
I always feel pretty positive about my life after singing that one
At first I found it very difficult to write a song about a city
Then I thought about the personality of this town
„The Faint-hearted Ones“ is about Berlin as the seducer of youth
So many young people – including myself – fall in love with the idea of Berlin
But of course there's no work – or pressure to work - and as the only currency many of these people posess is their creativity
it can be easy to lose yourself in this town
So much time is wasted in bars and long nights and glasses of wine and cigarettes and even longer afternoons
and all of a sudden your youth is finished and it was Berlin who took it from you

an ex-convict shoemaker—caught in a legal no-man’s land where he can neither obtain work without a residence permit
nor earn a permit without work—purchases pieces of a Prussian Captain’s uniform to expedite his needs
the shoemaker commandeers a group of soldiers and seizes the city hall of Koepenick
He arrests the town mayor and the town treasurer on fabricated fraud charges
and mysteriously disappears after ordering the soldiers to bring the town officials to the police station
Though it might take more than a thrift store captain’s bars to detain a local mayor
military leaders have long held a Prussian-like prestige in the United States
With the United States mired in two lengthy conflicts
American politicians feel a need to constantly reiterate their support for "the troops" and their respect for the generals who run our wars
especially media-savvy commanders like Gen
Criticizing the military would invite others to question one's patriotism and therefore is out of bounds
This trend is not healthy because civilians who are overly deferential to the military are unlikely to question military advice
even when it might be bad for the troops as well as the country
But generals are as fallible as the rest of us and should not receive a free pass from their civilian counterparts
Walt’s statement would sound familiar to a feuilleton reader in a Berlin café in 1906
where German intellectuals debated the ‘malaise’ of militarism and “Prussianism” of German society
Might the United States be suffering from a Koepenick syndrome where military leaders are above question?
The status of military leaders and public suspicion of standing armies date to before the American Revolution
but has only recently received increased attention
outlines these concerns in his recent book American Path to Permanent War
in the December/January 2011 issue of Foreign Affairs
in an article entitled “The Dangers of U.S
Militarism: Manufacturing Insecurity”
The United States' millenarian notions of a national destiny and the militarism that has infected American society have been responsible for a series of wars from which Washington has gained little or nothing and suffered a great deal
while contributing enormously to the misfortune of others…
one might say of the United States today what once was said of Prussia—that it is a state owned by its army
While the comparison of the democratic and liberal United States with 18th and 19th century autocratic Prussia seems ludicrous in one respect
In few other Western countries are members of the armed services accorded more respect and taken as shining examples of professionalism and leadership
In a compelling article in the Atlantic Monthly on why officers are leaving the armed forces
“Why does the American military produce the most innovative and entrepreneurial leaders in the country
then waste that talent in a risk-averse bureaucracy?”
this question could not have been posed in Germany or any other Western country
“Innovative” and “entrepreneurial” are the last words expected to describe military leaders
The credibility of policy pundits and advisors in Washington expands with the magnitude of military service; whereas on continental Europe
one is viewed with suspicion when possessing any record of military affiliation
soldiers are bought drinks by strangers and thanked for their service to the American people
These same expressions of gratitude would not occur in Europe
A German army doctor who recently returned from Afghanistan told the New York Times: “This sense of appreciation
people are going to be proud of you.”Part of this difference in response is naturally the result of the difference between a war and peacetime army
but even this does not explain the whole story
Obviously this reverence has not continuously been the case
the US Armed Forces were held in very low esteem
soon realized the travesty experienced by the soldiers coming home from the war
Ronald Reagan's massive rearmament programs had restored pride to the profession
The confetti parade of the Desert Storm forces marking the Allied victory in the first Gulf War in 1991 symbolically re-established the public's esteem of the United States Armed Forces – an admiration that continues to this day
In few other democratic countries in the world have more generals found places in administrations or indeed have become heads of states (one notable exception is Israel)
Almost every four-star general in the United States is sooner or later presumed to have presidential aspirations
it is the presidents who were former generals (George Washington
Eisenhower) who usually display the least confidence in the performance of the armed service
The military influence can be seen in foreign policy
A report by the Advisory Committee on Transformational Diplomacy states:
DoD’s regional combatant commanders have come to be perceived by states and other actors as the most influential US government regional representative
It is argued that the resources that combatant commanders control
their presence and frequent travel throughout the region
and even the symbolic impact of their aircraft and accompanying service members
all combine to place them in perceived position of preeminence
This assertion is supported by a study of The Project on National Security Reform
the most comprehensive effort to date to analyze the US national security system and propose recommendations to alleviate many of its bureaucratic problems
Its conclusion emphasizes that an inequality of resources leads to an inequality in policy—i.e.
This militarization can be seen even in the most trivial exchanges
as illustrated by a recent article in Rolling Stone Magazine in which General David Petraeus
was recorded as referring to Holbrooke as his “wingman”
"Since when did the diplomat become the general's wingman?" Holbrooke allegedly replied
"It's supposed to be the other way around!" One symptom of the Koepenick syndrome
is a disproportionally large military influence on policy making
Another symptom is the tendency to look to the military for innovation and leadership skills that can inspire and be emulated by the civilian private sector
The preponderance of resources and the military strength of the United States
are detrimental to the very spirit it seeks to create
Most recent US victories were not fuelled by brilliant feats of arms or innovation
and professionals talk about logistics.” Indeed
this has been the United States’ strength since the U.S
While logistics are often referred to as eighty percent of the battle
they are more the outgrowth of the old industrial notion of efficient organization
rather than the result of the armed forces’ innovative spirit.
One way for the United States to escape from the Koepenick syndrome is to cut its defense budget
Such economizing can liberate a new spirit of innovation
impoverished by the Wars of Frederick the Great and humiliated by Napoleon
still managed to field one of the best led and most innovative armies in the Wars of Liberation and the Waterloo campaign
it was the internal mechanics of the reconstituted Prussian General Staff—one of the major points of Prussian Army reform—that was partially responsible for the defeat of Napoleon in the Waterloo Campaign
Reducing the defense budget would not threaten the United States’ security nor would it lead to a decline in international standing
In a recent article entitled “A Leaner and Meaner Defense: How to Cut the Pentagon’s Budget while Improving its Performance,” Gordon Adams and Matthew Leatherman argue:
military force would still be superior to any other in technology and capability
It would be the only force capable of patrolling the world’s oceans
deploying hundreds of thousands of ground forces anywhere on the planet
and managing intelligence and logistics worldwide
These reductions would result not only in a more focused and more efficient U.S
military capability but also in a defense budget that
would help solve the United States’ fiscal problems
the two attributes of the US Armed Forces most sought after in the business community and admired by the general public
are not promoted in a culture of military dominance and abundance of resources
Prussia’s reverence for its military stemmed from the campaigns of 1812 and 1814
and from the Franco-Prussian War in which Prussia had to achieve maximum results with minimum resources
The subsequent military build-up and the notion that the soldier is the first man in the state undermined Prussia’s weak political institutions and set it on a self-destructive course
January 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of Dwight D
he warned the American people of the growing influence of the “military industrial complex”. An outgrowth of this “total influence”
is the United States’ reverence for its armed services and the men commanding them
While it is unlikely the United States will ever take the path of Prussia
the dangers of the Koepenick syndrome are real— a disproportionately high admiration for the leadership and innovation of uniformed men and women
and a minimized civilian influence over tough policy decisions

Beautifully situated on the banks of the river Dahme, the Baroque palace of Köpenick houses treasures from the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts), complementing the museum’s main exhibition space at the Kulturforum
is located on a manmade island on the outskirts of the old town centre of Köpenick
The main building was constructed between 1677 and 1690 on the site of an earlier hunting palace of the Brandenburg electors to designs by architects Rutger van Langervelt and Johann Arnold Nering
It was commissioned by the Hohenzollern prince-elector Friedrich (later Friedrich III Elector of Brandenburg and Friedrich I King of Prussia)
The ensemble includes a historical gateway
a chapel and an old utilities building that today houses storage rooms
Schloss Köpenick (Köpenick Palace) has been used as an exhibition space by the Kunstgewerbemuseum since 1963
artworks located in the east of Berlin were put on display here
The buildings on the island were later fully renovated and since 2004 have housed the permanent exhibition "RoomArt"
focussing on the decorative arts of the Renaissance
the museum presents outstanding masterworks in interior design from the 16th to 18th centuries
A further noteworthy feature of the palace is that the original Baroque plasterwork has survived intact in almost all of its rooms
an exhibition of archaeological findings documents the history of settlement and building on the island of Schloss Köpenick

There is still a lot missing in terms of culture and sports

I know that the area is very attractive for highly skilled workers
but you still have a lot of nature and lakes in the vicinity
I think it still needs better access to the infrastructure

But maybe I’m the only one: Most people here in the streets have children
and people sit on their balconies and terraces

At its exhibition space in Schloss Köpenick
the Kunstgewerbemuseum is showing a selection of some 100 electroformed sculptures from the museum’s holdings
The objects in question are 19th-century replicas of important pieces in the history of goldwork
which have undergone technical analysis and careful restoration over the past few years
electroforming was as innovative as 3D printing is today
three-dimensional gold objects were able to be reproduced
creating nearly identical metal copies in an electrolytic bath
The direct comparison between original and copy brings to light both the commonalities and the differences between them
Carl Haas rose to prominence through his work at the electroforming studio of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry
it was the silverware manufacturer Vollgold & Sohn that was particularly active in this field for the Berlin Kunstgewerbemuseum
This era also saw new developments in electroforming techniques
began producing electro-chemically gilded tableware in 1836
the Parisian company Christofle began to work with the technique
With his commissions of monumental centrepieces for his table settings
Napoleon III sent a clear message that France had joined the ranks of the industrialised nations and could now compete with the likes of England
This exhibition looks at technical aspects
but also at aspects related to cultural history: the electroformed sculptures are a prime example of the enthusiasm for technology and the historical consciousness of the Industrial Age
and they also played a central role in the educational models of Berlin’s Kunstgewerbemuseum at its founding in 1867
The objective of founding the museum was to drive innovation in artistic production through the collection of historical artefacts of outstanding quality (and reproductions of the same)
there are still numerous electroformed replicas in the museum’s collection that were fabricated during the museum’s early years
This exhibition is a collaborative conservational and art-historical project
The exhibition will be accompanied by a symposium on Thursday
A special exhibition by the Kunstgewerbemuseum – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Visitors to 'Clay Worlds' - this year's summer exhibition at Schloss Köpenick - will encounter a multifaceted visual world spanning several centuries
and couples appear alongside putti and graceful young girls
while religious and mythological motifs are alternated with quotidian subjects
The exhibition is focused on figurative ceramics from six centuries
Many of the objects on view are from the Kunstgewerbemuseum's extensive holdings and have not been shown for sometime
Floor tiles and wall reliefs will be on display
as well as furnace tiles and ceramic moulds from fired clay
The fusion of container and figure reached its high point in Art Nouveau
Small ceramic sculptures occupy a special place in the exhibition
and increasingly during the Baroque period
artists used the plastic material of clay for their first rough draft of their sculptures
These 'bozzetti' (from the Italian 'bozza' for 'draft
sketch') are contrasted withclay models from the 18th century
which served as detailed prototypes for works later executed in porcelain or bronze
The delightful ambiance of Schloss Köpenick provides the setting for the exhibition
A small summer celebration will take place at the Schloss on 5 July
during which visitors can take a tour through the 'Clay Worlds'

Good as Antony Sher is in the current revival
there is something disproportionately vast about both Adrian Noble's production and Anthony Ward's design: a picaresque fairytale has been turned into a gargantuan spectacle
It is, admittedly, a fairytale based on reality. Drawing on the true story of Wilhelm Voigt, which occurred 25 years before Zuckmayer wrote his play in 1931, the plot concerns a habitual criminal discharged from prison without the requisite papers
Described as "an administrative oddity"
Zuckmayer's Voigt lacks the proofs of existence that would enable him to get a residence permit or a job
Voigt acquires one by donning a captain's uniform discovered in a Berlin fancy-dress shop
Instantly he is transformed from drifting dosser into respectable somebody and
he loots the safe and exposes civic corruption
In Ron Hutchinson's new version, there are loud echoes of Gogol's The Government Inspector and Pinter's The Caretaker
where Davies dreams of getting to Sidcup to find the papers that will confirm his identity
satire on bureaucracy and respect for uniform is here transformed into a huge theatrical mural depicting the Kaiser's Germany: we get marching bands
even occasional nods to the hectic chases of silent movies
And it's a sign of the pervasive exaggeration that we are not allowed to deduce for ourselves where the slavish worship of uniform was to lead; instead
the show climaxes in what the stage directions call a "hysterical Dance of Death"
he establishes the essential decency of an "honest thief" who pinches a posh funeral bouquet in order to honour a dead female servant
Sher assumes a hilarious jauntiness as he sways and sashays in time to the seductive rhythms of a military band
well supported by Adrian Schiller as a revolutionary tailor
Nick Sampson as a suave minister and Olivia Poulet as a mayoral wife crazy for uniform

an extraordinary event in Germany captured the imagination of the general public
and made the perpetrator something of a folk hero
The event was captured by Carl Zuckmayer in a play entitled 'The Captain of Köpenick: A German Fairy Tale in Three Acts' which was first performed in Berlin in 1931
This English revival of Zuckmayer's work is by Ron Hutchinson and directed by Adrian Noble
Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt was already in prison for stealing by the time he was 14
and in total spent around 30 years on the wrong side of prison bars
But in 1906 he gained his freedom once more only to fall foul of the authorities for a different reason
He had no 'papers' to prove who he was
Since he had been in prison most of his adult life
he had no passport or anything which could confirm his existence
Voigt wanted to live in Berlin with his sister
but the police refused him leave to remain in the city because of his criminal record
Voigt took to wearing an old military uniform as a kind of disguise
One day when out and about in the streets of the city
marched them to the railway station (commandeering a few more soldiers along the way) and then headed for the town hall at Köpenick
he helped himself to the money kept in the safe and left the soldiers to guard the building while he made off with the loot
he was later pardoned and made money touring Europe as 'The Captain of Köpenick'
Zuckmayer's story follows Voigt's exploits but also provides some of the social background
we find a population which seems devoted to militarism and busily engaged in preparations for war
hell-bent on order and voluminous quantities of paperwork
his release from prison looks unlikely because he has no papers to stamp - he is 'an administrative oddity'
we see more bureaucracy at work in the police station and the town hall where visitors are required to stand on line to talk to a policeman
we see that not all German citizens are enamoured with the German way of doing things - revolutionaries make inflammatory speeches and riots duly follow
"The first half of this play feels like a long slog through familiar subject matter, though the piece does finally come alive in the second half, when it feels it feels like too little, too late...Sher gives a terrific high-definition performance "Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph
"When the satire bites, it bites pretty hard, but the truly enjoyable scenes are a long time coming."Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Köpenick, a historic town south-east of Berlin, is most well-known for the famous imposter Wilhelm Voigt, alias the “Captain of Köpenick”.
Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt was born to a shoemaker’s family in 1850. Between 1864-1891, he was sentenced to prison for a total of 25 years for thefts and forgery. After being released in 1906, he settled near Berlin, living with his sister, where he worked as a shoemaker until police expelled him as an undesirable person in August because of his convict past. He remained in Berlin as an unregistered resident.
That year Voigt embarked on his next adventure, the one won him fame on October 16, 1906. He resigned from the shoe-making factory and purchased parts of used captain’s uniforms from different shops.
He put on a uniform, went to the local army barracks, stopped four grenadiers and a sergeant on their way back to the barracks and told them to join him. Indoctrinated to obey officers without question, they followed. He dismissed the commanding sergeant to report to his superiors and later commandeered six more soldiers from a shooting range.
He took the train to Köpenick, occupied the local city hall with his soldiers and told them to guard all exits. He told the local police to “care for the law and order” and to “prevent calls to Berlin for one hour” at the local post office.
Voigt proceeded arrested the treasurer, von Wiltberg, and mayor Georg Langerhans, supposedly on suspicion of crooked bookkeeping, and confiscated 4,002 marks and 37 pfennigs, of course with a receipt that he signed in the name of his former jail director.
Then, he commandeered two carriages and told the grenadiers to take the arrested men to the Neue Wache, the former guardhouse on the “Unter den Linden” street in Berlin, for interrogation. He told the remaining guards to stand in their places for half an hour and then left for the railway station. He later changed into civilian clothes and disappeared.
During the following days the German press speculated on what had really happened. At the same time the army launched their own investigation.
Voigt was arrested 10 days later, and was sentenced to four years in prison for forgery, impersonating an officer and wrongful imprisonment. However, much of the public opinion was on his side, amused by the daring of the culprit. German Emperor William II pardoned him on August 16, 1908, allegedly because he, too, was entertained by the incident.
In 1910 the Captain of Köpenick moved to Luxembourg and worked as a waiter and shoemaker. He received a life pension from a rich Berlin dowager. Two years later he bought a house in Rue du Fort Neipperg and retired but, inflation following the Great War ruined his wealth. Voigt died in Luxembourg in 1922 and was buried in Limpertsberg cemetery.
German author Carl Zuckmayer wrote a play about the imposter in 1931, and several films were produced on the story.
In Germany Voigt is not considered a criminal; on the contrary, he is a folk hero and a victim of official prejudice, who was caught in the paradox of not being able to get work without a passport, while not being able to have a passport without work. His story is taught in German schools as an example of courageous resistance to unjust government.
A statue of Wilhelm Voigt as the “Captain of Köpenick” stands in front of the city hall of the small town, where aa plaque on the wall describes what happened there a century ago.

The interior of Kumami restaurant embodies meditative calm, creativity, and a high degree of aesthetics. The old rooms are so captivatingly enchanting, your eyes can’t get enough of them; the grandiose menu is so modestly and discreetly brought out, the service already has a wondrous touch.
Japanese architect, designer, and of course chef Kuma Kenta’s philosophy is that of the Japanese food culture "Washoku", which respects the original flavour of the ingredients, preparing them in a simple way. By applying that to European dishes, he’s created something wonderfully unique.
The "Wildfang prawn carpaccio" on the current five-course menu, for example, comes with local asparagus, radishes, and wild garlic, akin to Japanese wakame. The incredibly tender “Pink Duck Breast” comes with smoked quail egg, black root, yuzumiso, and a decadent sake sauce.
Kuma Kenta, working alone in the kitchen and dining room, serves all five courses of the daily menu, cooked to perfection and with a deliberateness as if each hand movement is part of a meditation. Nothing is hurried. Everything is tranquil. Respect. And joy. Accompanied by an incredibly high-quality selection of wines, sake, and rare Japanese whiskeys.

All of the seats and tables at Union supporter bars have remained empty for a long time due to the pandemic
Where there is normally a great deal of fun and exuberance
It's not only the Stadion An der Alten Försterei which has sat empty for many months
it's a question of preserving the traditional matchday rituals
Fan group Szene Köpenick and the first-team squad are leading the campaign "Shoulder to Shoulder" to support the Union supporter bar community. Anyone can show their support by buying the t-shirts and beer mats which are available online at the Union-Zeughaus. Both the t-shirts and beer mats are designed to show the solidarity between the supporters
For every t-shirt 5 euros and for every beer mat pack of 10 2,50 euros will go to support the Union supporter bars
Supporters who support the campaign with the items on sale can also co-determine which supporter bars should be on the list
you can select from a list of pubs which were nominated on Facebook
The number of bars that can be selected depends in the end on the overall proceeds of the campaign
The vote will decide in which order the pubs will be considered and those will receive the same amount of support in the end
Given their special importance as venues to the fan groups
the CBC Bowling Centre and the Casino Eiche will be supported in any case
Köpenick is still undoubtedly the greenest corner of Berlin
But the green spaces are increasingly under threat
especially with the warm and dry summers of recent years
but also littering and damage are impacting the three population in the southeast of the capital
FC Union Berlin is launching the Waldmeister project together with Berlin's Forestry and is dedicating the 2021/22 season third kit to the green spaces
From every jersey sold until the end of the year
FC Union Berlin will donate 5 EUR to the cause of planting more trees in Köpenick
The white shirt will be combined with green trims on the sleeves
main sponsor Aroundtown and sleeve partner WeFox are present on the alternative kit for the 21/22 season
Sustainability is an integral part of the corporate philosophy of Adidas and they have supplied the kit from 100% recycled materials
This label identifies products that contain recycled materials
They avoid waste and conserve natural resources
while offering functionality and durability in sports
“Union will be drawing a lot of attention to a very important issue with this unfamiliar colour combination for the club
a better urban environment for diverse living
development and preservation are extremely costly – particularly against the backdrop of the climate crisis
we are all the more delighted that Union is using its profile to make Berliners more aware of the importance of the forest for the capital,” explained Gunnar Heyne
our third kits have involved various surprising colour combinations
we decided to focus even more on sustainability
our home district of Köpenick provides plenty of oxygen and drinking water for the whole city
we are talking up the cause and are already looking forward to our first joint project,” added Thomas Stäpke
Managing Director for Finance and Sales at 1
The Waldmeister kit is now available at Union’s shops at Bahnhofstaße, Ring-Center and the Waldseite at the Alte Försterei, as well as, online
The team will wear the shirt for the first time next Saturday at the first match of the season against Czech side Dukla Prague
Sunday was the final day of the winter training camp in Spain before Urs Fischer's first-team squad made the return journey to Berlin-Köpenick
The supporter's night at the camp went down well and the players were given an extra hour to catch up on sleep
Breakfast was exquisitely served as normal and some of the squad went out to do some activities on the tennis courts
The group met again at 12:30 for the last lunch and gave a warm thanks to the staff and supporters who have followed the team for the past eight days
The squad left for the airport at 1pm and caught the flight back to Berlin at 3pm
A free day has been thrown in for the squad to get in the right shape ahead of Tuesday's first training session back in Köpenick

plant „Aktion Tier“ bereits weitere Eichhörnchenbrücken in Berlin
