The Alabama Department of Commerce has opened a business development office in Stuttgart
to enhance the state’s strategic efforts to attract European companies considering job-creating investments in the U.S.
an experienced German businessman who spent seven years in charge of an industrial operation in Alabama
serves as the director of the state’s new European office
Dörr’s job will be to build on Alabama’s long-standing economic development activities in Europe
European companies announced projects in Alabama involving nearly $1.5 billion in new capital investment and 1,500 jobs
according to data from the Alabama Department of Commerce
“Communities across Alabama have seen real benefits from the state’s economic ties to Europe
thanks to robust levels of two-way trade and significant investment that has created thousands of jobs,” Governor Ivey said
“Establishing a European business development office to strengthen this relationship and spark even more economic activity just makes sense for Alabama.”
Dörr traveled to Montgomery last Friday for meetings with Governor Ivey and Alabama Department of Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield
the assistant director of Commerce’s business development team who directs European strategy
director of Commerce’s International Trade Office
“As we see investment from Europe on the rise
it has become more apparent to us that having representation on the ground in Europe will help provide new connections
not only with companies within those sectors but also to help us advance our trade opportunities,” Secretary Canfield said
Smith said Dörr has solid contacts in industrial fields such as engineering
machining and additive manufacturing in Germany and other areas on the continent
With more than 20 years of management experience
Dörr has developed an extensive network of business connections in the region
“Christoph can generate business development leads and open doors for Alabama’s team as we seek to build relationships with decision-makers in Germany and other European countries that can translate into jobs here at home,” Smith said
Dörr today serves as CEO of Innoteque Solutions in Kornwestheim
a major industrial center that is home to global automaker Mercedes-Benz
Dörr was president and CEO of Aluminumtechnologie Schmid GmbH
a high-precision CNC machining and die-casting company
Between 2005 and 2012, Dörr was responsible for the launch and operation of the Aluminum Technology Schmid North America production plant in Auburn that acted as a Tier 1 and Tier 2 auto supplier. The plant today operates under the ownership of Italy-based 2A S.p.A
I developed a deep knowledge of Alabama’s culture
customs and business advantages,” Dörr said
“I personally experienced the benefits of investing in Alabama
and I can share that with prospective companies
not just theoretical information about a business location in the state.”
Alabama’s economic ties with Europe – in particular, Germany — trace back for decades. Germany has become Alabama’s No. 1 source of foreign direct investment
according to Alabama Department of Commerce estimates
the state has also attracted a significant number of smaller European businesses
A total of 82 German companies have operations in Alabama
according to Alabama Department of Commerce data
Other European countries with a significant business presence in Alabama are France (51 companies)
the United Kingdom (26 companies) and Sweden (11 companies)

the logistics branch of the German railway company
the threat of massive job cuts has led to a systematic increase in work pressure
This has considerable consequences for the health of railroad workers and results in life-threatening situations
A report by a railroad worker at the last meeting of the German Rail Action Committee on an incident in Mannheim once more provides a drastic demonstration of exactly this
the Ministry of Transport being cut by €380 million
The victims are first and foremost railroad workers
a dangerous accident occurred at the marshalling yard in Mannheim
which has not yet appeared in any press reports
as rail workers have reported to the Rail Action Committee
an engine driver was supposed to move several wagons off of a track during the night shift
He positioned his locomotive in front of the empty wagons and got out to prepare the locomotive for the operation
that other wagons were being “pushed” onto the same track at the same time
wagons are pushed in the correct order by another locomotive over the “hump” onto the predetermined track—i.e
the driver was not made aware that additional cars were rolling toward his train
They collided with the empty wagons on the track
injuring him so badly that he was taken to the hospital
His colleagues reported him breaking several ribs and bruising his lungs—dangerous and extremely painful injuries
demonstrates yet again that working under unrelenting high pressure without sufficient precautions to protect workers’ lives can indeed have life-threatening consequences
A worker from the same marshalling yard told the Rail Action Committee: “There is a lot of pressure here at the Mannheim yard at the moment
Because the dispatchers have to meet their targets
their colleagues at the station are under a lot of pressure to work faster and faster
They try not to attract negative attention and do their best to get their work done as quickly as possible
We should really be making sure that we work safely
Another worker reported: “There are fewer and fewer staff
Our site manager claims that there are too many of us
but the staffing levels are already so low that six or seven of us from [the German city of] Saarbrücken have been brought to the Mannheim marshalling yard to help us out.”
The works council and the German railroad workers’ union EVG are on the side of the DB Cargo Management Board
which has decreed its own “transformation” in order to trim unprofitable parts of the company and the associated jobs
it is terrible that nobody is standing up for their colleagues
so they are speaking out: “The works council approves everything
It stands behind the site manager.” Employees are being told from all quarters “that we railroaders can’t defend ourselves against increasing work stress
Many of us already want to stop working and don’t want to come on shift.”
who is a member of the Rail Action Committee
called upon his colleagues: “It can’t go on like this
Get organized and join the Rail Action Committee
Safety affects us all; it can happen to us at any time
Don’t let yourselves be intimidated any longer
we are the ones lining the bosses’ pockets and we are the ones who can stop this.”
which was founded during the EVG strike a year ago
has expressed its distrust of the EVG and the GDL train drivers’ union apparatus
It strives for the international unification of all railroad workers and declares that the rights and needs of employees are more important than the profit interests of investors
We call on all railroad workers and all those who want to take part in setting up independent Action Committees to send us reports on the conditions in their area and to contact us: Get in touch via Whatsapp on +49-163-337 8340, register using the form below or send your report to the World Socialist Web Site

Germany — An Army construction brigade was reactivated Thursday in Europe after a 31-year absence
marking another example of the service’s renewed presence on the Continent
The 7th Engineering Brigade was stood up at the Army’s Bavarian post in Ansbach under the command of Col
The unit was founded in 1944 as the 5202nd Engineer Construction Brigade and formerly based in Kornwestheim
After moving to multiple locations in Europe
The unit is the Army’s only forward-stationed engineering brigade and will fall under the supervision of the Kaiserslautern-based 21st Theater Sustainment Command
Army in Europe and Africa as well as NATO-driven missions
“We’ve been wanting to come to Europe my entire career,” Moulton said about himself and his family
The brigade is tasked with bridge construction
“Engineers make the difference; that’s why you are here,” said Brig
“You enable the freedom of movement for every soldier in this theater.”
The growing brigade currently hosts about 150 soldiers and family members in and around Ansbach
There is still construction work to be done on the brigade’s infrastructure and facilities
The unit plans to grow to about 300 soldiers and family members by next year
The reactivation is the product of five years of planning
had been drawing down its forces in Europe following the Cold War but began bolstering its presence after Russia took the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in 2014
has rotated thousands more troops into Europe as part of a mission to reassure NATO allies

Wiesbauer GmbH & Co has erected a tower crane using its new Terex AC 700 all-terrain crane
Crane rental company Wiesbauer used its new Terex AC 700 all terrain crane to erect a tower crane at a work site in Kornwestheim
The Bietigheim-Bissingen-based crane service provider carried out the project on behalf of the Mörfelden-Walldorf branch office of construction company Trinac
which is building a new office building for the Wüstenrot bank in Kornwestheim
The decision to use this crane was not only based on the AC 700 crane’s technical characteristics but also on logistical considerations
who runs the company with his brother Jochen
“We had the crane stationed at our headquarters in Bietigheim-Bissingen precisely at the right time
and Bietigheim-Bissingen is only an hour away from the work site in Kornwestheim,”
This meant that travelling to the site with the AC 700 crane was relatively easy
requiring only the appropriate travel permit and what in Germany is referred to as a ‘BF-3 third-generation escort vehicle’
The unit was accompanied by an assist crane and four trucks
Setting up the AC 700 at the work site by the seven-person Wiesbauer team
this unit was clearly designed with ease of assembly in mind
which is crucial to our ability to deliver when it comes to short assembly and disassembly times
this ease of assembly also plays an important role in the outstanding cost effectiveness of the model
To reach the lifting height of up to 70 metres required to erect the tower crane
the Wiesbauer assembly technicians configured the Terex AC 700 crane with an LF main boom extension measuring 26.40 m
Components included relatively lightweight and compact mast sections as well as more unwieldy elements such as the slewing unit
“When lifting loads with these types of dimensions
it’s not enough to just rely on the crane operator’s expert touch
You also need a crane with extraordinary precision.”

wants to cut a further 1,800 jobs at its subsidiary DB Cargo to get out of the red
What this means in practice is already evident to railroad workers
Staff shortages and exploitation have reached drastic proportions
Work accidents or near-accidents are occurring more and more frequently and considering the dangers of this hard work
One worker who experiences these conditions firsthand is M.M.
a member of the Rail Rank-and-File Committee (Aktionskomitee Bahn)
He is a foreman and switch yard supervisor at one of the largest European marshalling yards
where he is in the process of setting up an independent rank-and-file committee together with colleagues
told the World Socialist Web Site: “Downsizing has long started at our company; it is already in full swing.” He reports that at night at the switch yard
where normally at least eight people should be on duty
there are currently sometimes only two colleagues left working: “Just recently it happened again: There I was all alone
and another colleague was doing work in another group
If someone had asked me afterwards how I was feeling physically
I could only have said: I feel like a 90-year-old man with all my bones broken.”
M.M.’s worksite is the so-called gravity marshalling yard (Ablaufberg)
where workers have the job titles shunting engineer (Bergzuglokführer) or hump operator (Bergmeister)
The yard is composed of an elevated bit of terrain with a track where the wagons are separated from each other
Then the locomotive pushes them over the hump
where gravity causes them to roll downhill to connect to new trains
“Our job as shunting engineers is to separate the incoming trains,” explained M.M
“This involves using a shunting rod to push the railcars apart while the train is moving
Then the push-off locomotive pushes the cars over the hill
the signalman sets the switches according to his program.”
A team dismantling trains at this yard not long ago consisted of three men
Just a few months back one of the positions was eliminated
The reason given was that DB Cargo currently had fewer customers and therefore fewer trains
the trains have definitely been longer since then,” said M.M
“And in the meantime it has become the rule that we work as only two-man teams.”
so one man has to do all the work alone.” He described what it consists of: “Often we have to deal with 600 or 700 m long trains
which we have to walk down twice: first when we dismantle them and then
that results in a walk of up to 15 km per shift: a walk over gravel with constant bending
“and you’ll be sick for two weeks afterwards
I did it in the summer on the afternoon shift in the worst of the heat
the dispatchers have [been] constantly pressuring us lately
we’re supposed to maintain productivity and even increase it.”
“I’ve already looked death in the eye myself,” M.M
“and only quick reactions saved me from being pulled under a rail car
My wife says goodbye to me every day like it could be the last.”
The topic of occupational safety and accidents has been the focus of the Rail Rank-and-File Committee for several weeks
ever since a member of the committee had a serious work accident at DB Network Overhead Line Maintenance (Netz Instandhaltung Oberleitung)
In fact there have already been ten fatal work accidents at Deutsche Bahn this year alone
Both the railroad board and the railroad workers’ union EVG are doing everything they can to cover up the deadly dangers
the staff shortage is also resulting in increasingly dangerous situations
“You get the impression they’re taking death in stride,” said M.M
“The newspapers only carry the stories the government and business want
and nobody talks about how we’re doing and how dangerous our work is
we have to work at night when everyone is overtired and there is not enough light
He reported a recent dangerous situation in the marshalling yard when the bushes along the tracks had not been cut back
We couldn’t get through everywhere and got caught in it with the shunting rod
Eventually it got so bad that we all refused to go unhook the trains anymore because it was just too dangerous.”
also addressed the meager pay for this strenuous
“If I had at least a big chunk of money at the end of the month doing this
then maybe the whole thing would be halfway bearable
We workers don’t want to become millionaires at all,” he added
to be able to buy my children shoes and warm winter clothes when needed
and always have enough money so that we can eat and live reasonably
But that’s not a given based on my wage alone.”
His basic wage is 2,100 euro per month after taxes
“I can’t support a family with two children on that
That’s why I can never take a four-week vacation
because then I don’t have the night shift bonuses
It already happens all the time that I have to fall back on reserves that I saved up at my previous job
The salary is simply too little for the dangerous work
A dog gets more empathy than we get at DB Cargo.”
These conditions are the reason why the railroad workers were so dissatisfied with the outcome of the latest round of collective bargaining and are furious with the EVG
The EVG stifled the collective bargaining struggle and forced massive real wage cuts and further attacks on its members
EVG prevented the strike despite overwhelming willingness among workers to fight
The subsequent announcements of job cuts show even more clearly that the EVG leadership is playing for the other team
on the side of the railroads and the government
The EVG knew early on about the plan to cut thousands of jobs at DB Cargo
It was in an internal “white paper for freight transport,” according to the press
which DB Cargo boss Sigrid Nikutta wanted to present to the supervisory board before the end of October
She has developed these plans in cooperation with the management consultancy Roland Berger
is collecting around 8 million euro for the work
casting their votes against the conciliation offer and in favor of a strike
a kind of subcontractor for DB,” he said at the time
DB Cargo can mercilessly implement job cuts
At the meeting of the Rail Rank-and-File Committee last Tuesday
A postman from Frankfurt Airport noted how similar the attacks on workers were in both areas
He said: “There is always money for war and for military aid for Ukraine
But that infrastructure in Germany is crumbling is the other side of the coin.”
The Rank-and-File Committee aims to unite workers independently of the EVG and the GLD train drivers’ unions
It established two principles at its founding
the interests and needs of workers take precedence over the profits of corporations; and second
the allies of railroad workers are not to be found in boardrooms and union offices
rather they are the other railroad workers and laborers of Europe and around the world
“What this committee has set out to do is exactly what I have been trying to do for a long time as a lone wolf,” said M.M
His report shows that great potential exists for the formation of independent rank-and-file committees in workplaces
“When we refused to continue working because the bushes were so overgrown
“And these conditions exist in pretty much every part of DB.”
