with almost nothing to split the sides in terms of possession and shots
but the difference-maker arrived in first-half stoppage time
On the second wave of attack, KuPS worked the ball out to Otto Ruoppi, whose square ball across the penalty box was helped on by Jaakko Oksanen to Agon Sadiku
The home side had the better of the late chances, as SJK could not force a late equaliser and have now taken one point from their last two games after starting the season with four wins in a row
SJK's loss leaves Inter Turku as the only other unbeaten side left this season, and they moved to within two points of the Seinajoki club with one fewer match played after a 1-1 draw with HJK
Having finally got off the mark in the Veikkausliiga last time, Teemu Pukki made it two in two midway through the first half by timing his run to perfection and lashing a finish past goalkeeper Eetu Huuhtanen
But 17 minutes from time, the Helsinki side threw away the win when a dreadful pass from goalkeeper Thijmen Nijhuis was intercepted by Loic Essomba
but have only four points and sit 10th of 12 teams
AC Oulu are still bottom of the pile, but are now just a point behind HJK after ending their five-match losing run with a 3-1 win over 10-man KTP
Armaan Wilson scored a consolation in added time for KTP
After three successive wins, it's back-to-back defeats for Ilves, who remain fourth after losing 1-0 to VPS late on
In the 93rd minute, Nicolas Fleuriau arrived at the back post to control a cross and bury a finish at the near post for VPS' second win of the campaign
Jaro picked up their first points since matchday one with a 1-0 away win over Haka
The new boys left things late as well - seconds after Haka's Nicolas Gianini Dantas was red carded in the 87th minute, Jaro capitalised when Severi Kahkonen's strike nestled in the bottom corner
Finally, Gnistan earned their second win of the season and went above opponents Mariehamn into eighth place with a lightning start in a 2-0 home win
A poacher's finish after three minutes and a low strike from the edge of the area after six minutes, both from Vertti Hanninen

aim to bring affordable Korean food to Greenville
The Phoenix Kup chicken rice bowl from Kups
The Colpop Kup is a side item that includes a snack cup of crispy chicken bites atop a cup of soda for an easy on-the-go snack
A new food truck parked near Bob Jones University is serving affordable Korean fare and has plans to grow
You could say Robin Byun and Daniel Kim’s new food venture, Kups
was one part destiny and one part DoorDash
The two friends who opened their Korean food truck two weeks ago
Kim’s late-night order from Wendy’s couldn’t be fulfilled because the store was closed
and so Byun sent a message to let him know
“I saw the name and I said ‘Kim,’ that sounds Korean,” Byun recalled with a grin
Now the two are delivering their own food in the form of Kups
which is permanently parked at 1500 Wade Hampton Blvd.
rice bowls filled with sweet potato noodles
the most popular item has been the Phoenix Kup
which comes with a spicy marinated chicken
The Oink Kup features spicy fried marinated pork and the Tuyo Kup features tuna
the Kups menu is notable for its price point
but everything else clocks in at $9.99 or less
The food truck idea evolved somewhat organically but also out of a hunger to share Korean food at a reasonable price
When Byun was in school at Bob Jones University
so he found it frustrating that dining out at many local Asian restaurants was so expensive
so it was a lot of pressure moneywise,” Byun said
I make food at home and I know it doesn’t cost that much.”
The two owners have designed their menu with a streamlined approach
putting extra effort in on the front end to source
prep and cook ingredients to keep prices low
They also save in overhead costs with the food truck and by keeping it parked
While initial thoughts were to create a mobile operation
the two quickly realized that doing so would quickly take a toll on the vehicle
Byun and Kim pay the business owner a monthly rent to park
each rooted in traditional flavors and techniques
is scratch made in the commissary kitchen Byun and Kim use for prep
Since neither came from restaurant families
they leaned on their church community to find a lot of the recipes
amassing a sizeable collection from the “Korean grandmas,” of the congregation
testing and streamlining to find the best fit in terms of balance
One recipe that is not traditional is their kimchi
“We couldn’t even ask the church ladies,” Byun said of their kimchi recipe
“We took hard time to make it vegetarian.”
Byun was born in New York but lived most his life
He landed in Greenville in 2017 to attend Bob Jones University
Kim was born in South Korea and came to the U.S
Both men studied education; Byun early childhood and Kim Christian education
He’d spent time cooking while serving his mandatory two years in the military in Korea
and he found he loved the culinary process and the way food made people happy
He lived and worked in Myrtle Beach for years before being called back to Greenville
where he was promoted to executive chef at Tsunami and then at Otto Izakaya
he’d already begun to feel the pull to do something of his own
“I think having my own business is making me happier and enjoying my job,” Kim said
the two friends and business partners are bringing their own vision to life
The goal is to evolve the concept into a brick-and-mortar space and eventually into a franchise model with locations all over
The root will always be scratch-made Korean rice bowls
but the menu may grow as the business does
the current menu also features Kolpop chicken and kolpop mando
easily transportable snacks that Byun grew up with in Korea
it is a cup of soda that comes fitted with a small cup of either bite-sized fried chicken pieces or savory fried dumplings atop
Kim and Byun hope to expand the business into doing meal service and catering for businesses
“We want to do this style of food even when we open a restaurant,” Byun said
“We want to keep it original and to have a story.”
Kups food truck is located at 1500 Wade Hampton Blvd.

“Even teaching … I liked it but I didn’t think I was 100% dedicated to (it) like passionately into it,” Byun said
“But I think making Korean food would be something that’s fun and that represents my country too
They decided to go to Charleston and purchase a food truck

lunch is made and served by members of the congregation after services
The two approached some of the women and asked for their recipes
narrowing it down to dishes they felt would a good fit for their business
“There’s a Korean word that’s called ‘jung,’” Byun said
“There’s no word to describe it in English but Korean people give a lot of food
they’ll constantly feed you … they just want you to be happy
“So us giving a full cup of Kups is like our Korean cultural thing,” he said

For a while, another giant-killing was on the cards, as they led at half-time thanks to Gabriel Europaeus' goal after 28 minutes
which he curled into the top corner from just inside the penalty area with aplomb
with the Oulunkyla side surviving their woodwork being struck and needing a plethora of saves and goal-line clearances to stay in the game
It was perhaps inevitable that KuPS would eventually find a way through, and the equaliser came in the second minute of the second half thanks to Jaakko Oksanen
who guided the ball into the bottom corner with a clean strike from the edge of the area
13 minutes from time, Gnistan hearts were broken by Petteri Pennanen
but found its way through a crowded penalty area and into the back of the net
It's four wins in a row now for KuPS after they began the campaign with a draw
while the three points against HJK remain Gnistan's total for the season so far
SJK had the opportunity to return to the top of the table 24 hours later, but they failed to capitalise and were instead held 2-2 by Haka
They looked set for a fifth win in a row after 21 minutes, when Alenis Vargas' 30-yard strike flew into the top corner to put the home team ahead
The Seinajoki side doubled their lead 14 minutes from time thanks to Jeremiah Streng
who beat the offside trap and raced away to slot home
With 90 minutes on the clock, Haka grabbed what appeared to be no more than a consolation when a low cross was turned in at the back post by Jordan Houston
It wasn't Houston, but SJK, who had a problem six minutes into added time, as Haka completed an unlikely late comeback, courtesy of Kalle Multanen
who emerged within a crowded penalty area to bundle a corner over the line
The capitulation means SJK now trail KuPS on goal difference
while Haka now have seven points from four matches
HJK's disastrous three-match losing start to the season was ended at the weekend, as they won 3-1 to inflict successive losses on VPS
A return to winning ways was marked by the first Veikkausliiga goal for Teemu Pukki since his return to his homeland
scoring from the penalty spot after four minutes
Pyry Mentu settled the home side's nerves further with a goal in first half stoppage time, and though Alife Cicale pulled one back after the hour mark, Benji Michel wrapped things up for the record champions two minutes from time
Ilves have dropped to fourth after their perfect start was ended by Mariehamn, who move into the top half with a 3-2 home win
The Lynx's cause was not helped by a red card shown to Otso Virtanen with only four minutes on the clock, allowing Mariehamn to build a 2-0 lead at the break courtesy of Sebastian Dahlstrom and Niilo Kujasalo
But the 10 men hit back after half-time through Joona Veteli and then Matias Rale, who made it 2-2 at the hour mark. However, the Tampere side were back level for a matter of seconds, as Muhamed Olawale scored what turned out to be the winner
Also reduced to 10 men were AC Oulu, who stay bottom of the table and without a point after a 4-1 home loss to Inter Turku
Julius Paananen gave the strugglers an early lead, but goals from Mamodou Sarr and Jasse Tuominen before the break meant the match began to follow the form book
William Eskelinen's red card all but ended Oulu's hopes, before Axel Kouame and Thomas Lahdensuo completed the scoring in the final 10 minutes
A first win of the season for KTP has seen them move up to eighth, a place ahead of Jaro, who they defeated 3-2 on the road
The visitors had twice taken the lead either side of half-time, but put daylight between themselves and the league's new boys with a Tabi Manga penalty 16 minutes from the end
Kerfala Cissoko scored his fourth of the season to set up a grandstand finish
but it wasn't enough to prevent Jaro from falling to a third defeat in a row

Here’s the interview

Santeri Hostikka scored twice early on against Ilves a week prior, but this time he notched a brace of yellow cards - the first for a poor challenge on Valentin Gasc
and the second for shoving Gasc back to the ground after he retailiated
The visitors still probed in the second half, as Teemu Pukki hit the post, but cometh the hour, cometh Kasper Paananen

but it found its way into the bottom corner nonetheless
SJK sit second in the table after two 1-0 wins
KuPS' title defence began with a draw away at Inter Turku, but they got a victory under their belt on matchday two with a 1-0 win at home to AC Oulu
The visitors put the champions under real pressure early on
hitting the bar and coming within a whisker of forcing an own goal
However, midway through the first half, a half-cleared KuPS corner was headed back into the danger area and was eventually turned home by Agon Sadiku from close range
Both sides peppered their opponents goal with chances throughout the rest of the game, and thanks to a second KuPS goal disallowed for offside, plus countless saves and clearances off the line, the score somehow stayed 1-0
Top of the early standings are Ilves, who lead SJK on goals scored following a 2-1 success at home to new boys Jaro
It looked to be a comfortable afternoon for the Tampere side, as they were two goals up after the first quarter of the match through Teemu Hytonen and Matias Rale
But Jaro, who marked their top flight return with a 2-0 win on the opening day, managed to shut up shop and set up a nervy finish, when Kerfala Cissoko found the net with nine minutes to play
meaning its the Lynx sitting atop the Finnish food chain for the time being
The biggest win of the season so far went to Inter Turku, who beat Gnistan 3-0 at home

The 17-year-old midfielder debuted for Kuopion Palloseura and established himself as a starter in the championship-winning team
and only Jaakko Oksanen had the most minutes in the team
“It was a very good season,” Siltanen said to Transfermarkt
“A wonderful first season as a professional
We had a very hungry team with a good chemistry.”
Siltanen’s contract expires on Dec. 31, 2025. According to reports, he is open to a transfer either this wither or in the coming summer. Swedish side Djurgårdens IF have made an offer of €500,000
but it is expected that it will take a seven-figure offer for his club to open negotiations
“My immediate goal is to make the next step in my career and to develop further,” Siltanen said
“My agents worry about the rest.” His market value after the November update increased to €800,000
That makes him one of the most valuable players in the Veikkausliiga
The teenager believes that his first touch and ability to read the game are his biggest strengths
Siltanen is the playmaker in the KuPS team in a similar style to Toni Kroos
but also like to win one-v-one situations and intercept passes.” These are attributes that have become important in modern football and were underlined even further when Rodri won the Ballon d’Or this season.

KuPS is playing home against IFK Mariehamn at Savon Sanomat Areena on Wed
who had also begun with consecutive losses
That expectation refused to waver in a first half which the home side dominated
but only one of their eight shots heading on target suggested a lack of cutting edge
Joakim Latonen stepped up and sent Nijhuis the wrong way to give Gnistan the lead
Teemu Pukki had a handful of attempts for HJK late on
but he nor his teammates could find an equaliser
meaning only goal difference is keeping Toni Korkeakunnas' side off the bottom of the table
while Pukki is yet to score a league goal since his return
For Gnistan, it was one of the most famous nights in their history - having already beaten HJK in the Liiga Cup this year, this win was their first ever in the Veikkausliiga against their big neighbours
A shock was on the cards early on in Seinajoki, too, before league leaders SJK turned things around to beat AC Oulu, 3-1
The visitors survived a barrage of early chances before taking the lead against the run of play in fine style. Niklas Jokelainen won the ball back high up the pitch, allowing Otto Kemppainen to curl the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area
However, SJK were not phased, and found an equaliser just four minutes later. Babacar Fati was forced out wide by goalkeeper William Eskelinen
but the full-back got to the byline and his pull back deflected off Eskelinen and into the net before he could claw it away
Two goals in 12 second-half minutes sealed the win for SJK, and Eskelinen againfailed to cover himself in glory with the first of those, spilling a Momodou Bojang shot at the feet of Kasper Paananen
Midway through the second half, Markus Arsalo tried his luck from 20 yards out
and his strike took a huge deflection to take it away from the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner
It's four wins from four now for the Kerho
while Oulu's inferior goal difference means it's they who are keeping HJK off the foot of the table
KuPS are still breathing down SJK's necks as they moved onto 10 points from four matches played with a 4-1 win at home to Mariehamn
The opening goal came in the 37th minute, when the visitors failed to clear their lines and the ball ricocheted to Otto Ruoppi
who guided the ball home with a cool finish
A second shortly before half-time looked to have put the game beyond Mariehamn. It came courtesy of Petteri Pennanen, who took aim from well outside the area and his strike flew past Matias Riikonen
But the Aland islanders found a route back into the match inside the final 20 minutes, when Muhamed Olawale met Jiri Nissinen's cross and guided a header into the bottom corner
Yet hopes of a comeback were stamped out with two goals in the final 10 minutes of the match. Joslyn Luyeye-Lutumba scored the third
as Luyeye-Lutumba laid the ball off for Ruoppi to fire from the edge of the box and make it four
with three points from their opening four matches

He grabbed the opening goal of the league season after four minutes with a cushioned volley as the home side failed to deal with a long throw into their box
Hostikka was afforded too much space on the left wing before cutting inside and firing into the top corner
Ilves were back in the game in the 38th minute when Lauri Ala-Myllymaki's 20-yard drive went in off the post
But the match turned when 16-year-old Otto Tiitinen came on with a quarter of the match to play for his Veikkausliiga debut
he Maradona-turned his way into the box and saw his shot deflect off two HJK players before nestling in the back of the net
with Hostikka getting the final touch and going from hero to villain for the visitors
Less than 10 minutes later, Tiitinen carved out another shooting chance and this time did not need the help of deflections to win the game 3-2 on the biggest day of his young career
Liiga Cup winners Inter Turku continued their fine form this spring with a 1-1 draw at home to reigning champions KuPS
After a goalless first half, the team from Kuopio broke the deadlock through Samuli Miettinen, but inside the final 15 minutes, Inter found a way through and equalised courtesy of Axel Kouame
That goal meant the home side are now seven without defeat in competitive games since beginning their Liiga Cup campaign with a loss to HJK
The surprise early pacesetters, however, are Jaro, who won 2-0 away at Mariehamn on their return to top-flight football after almost a decade away
Jaro took little time adapting to the higher level, scoring in just the sixth minute when Kerfala Cissoko bundled the ball home
Ten minutes into the second half, the Guinean was at it again with another close-range finish to double the advantage, with both goals set up by Albin Bjorkskog
Top of the scoring charts is Mads Borchers, who scored a second-half hat-trick in VPS' dramatic 4-3 win over AC Oulu
Niklas Jokelainen put Oulu in control with two goals in the first half, but a penalty from Borchers and a goal for Maissa Fall - assisted by Borchers - levelled the score with 20 minutes to play
Borchers then put VPS in front, only for Oulu to hit back in the 90th minute through new man Marokhy Ndione
But Borchers was not done there - a minute later
he was in the right place at the right time to force the ball home at full stretch and finally seal the win for the Vaasa side
There were plenty of goals in Valkeakoski, too, where the home side Haka beat Gnistan 3-2
There could have been more had both sides not missed penalties, but crucially for Haka, Simon Lindholm made amends and put them 2-1 up in the second half
having missed the chance to put them 2-0 up from the spot inside half an hour
Then, when Tim Vayrynen missed a 90th-minute penalty to level the scores at 2-2, Haka went straight down the other end, and Jean-Pierre Da Sylva made it 3-1 to settle the tie before Gnistan added a late consolation
Finally, there was disappointment for the other newly-promoted side, KTP, as they lost 1-0 at home on their return, conceding a 73rd-minute goal to Momodou Bojang of SJK

the clocks going forward indicates the start of the business end of the domestic season
it means it’s time to get down to business
as the Veikkausliiga season gets underway. Will it be business as usual in a league which has only seen two different winners in the last eight seasons
or is now the time for a new name to rise to the top
2024 champions KuPS ended four years of HJK dominance
but the team from the capital have made the headline signing of the summer in a bid to regain their top dog status
The first test of the Helsinki side’s credentials will be the season curtain-raiser on Saturday in a tough away fixture at Ilves
here is everything you need to know ahead of the 2025 Veikkausliiga season
Having won the title by two points last year
KuPS are out to achieve a first for the club in 2025
Despite winning seven top-flight titles in their history
the club from Kuopio has never retained the Veikkausliiga trophy
The winter has seen a reasonable amount of upheaval at Vare Areena, with promising youngster Matias Siltanen leaving for Djurgarden for €1.2 million among a handful of departures, while 10 new players have come in, including Finland under-21 international Doni Arifi from Ilves
Manager Jarkko Wiss will be hoping his team is following the tried and tested model of improving while on top, but sneaking through the Liiga Cup quarter-finals against AC Oulu before a 3-1 loss to HJK in the semi-finals suggests some time for the squad to bed in is needed
By far the highest profile arrival ahead of the 2025 Veikkausliiga is the return of Teemu Pukki
who has joined HJK 14 years after his last stint in the country with the same club
At 35, Pukki averaged around one goal every three games in the MLS with Minnesota United
and is likely to provide a significant threat in a league where he holds the highest market value
HJK have promoted plenty of youth players to the first team for 2025, and having also brought in another 30-plus Finnish international, Alexander Ring
Toni Korkeakunnas’ side are attempting to blend youth and experience in their bid to win a 34th league title after a disappointing third place in 2024
HJK’s fall to third last time out was down to Ilves pipping them to second late on in the campaign. It was a significant improvement on 10th in 2023 for the team from Tampere, and though the loss of Arifi will be felt, the signings of Matias Rale and Sauli Vaisanen should improve what was already a mean defence
Consistency has been key for SJK, who have finished in the Championship Round places every year since it was introduced in 2021. Another similar season is on the cards, but they will have to do it without last season’s Veikkausliiga joint-top scorer, Jaime Moreno
as the Nicaraguan international has returned to his country of birth
As a replacement, the team from Seinäjoki have looked to a similar neck of the woods, bringing in Honduran Alenis Vargas from Sporting Kansas City
The challenge for VPS and Haka is to finish in the top six once again after fifth and sixth-place finishes last time
but Haka have not helped themselves by losing Maissa Fall to the Vaasa club after he contributed 11 goal involvements in 2024
One Liiga Cup win in five for Haka suggests the Senegalese’s absence is already being felt
The fresh faces for the 2025 Veikkausliiga are KTP, who are back in the top flight after just a year away, and Jaro
who finished as Ykkosliiga runners-up to return after a nine-year absence
Having some of their best talent pinched by other Veikkausliiga clubs has not helped KTP
while Jaro have added some much-needed attacking options
at least one of which will have to hit the ground running to give them a chance of staying up
The 12 goals of Englishman Ashley Coffey played a huge part in Oulu’s survival last season, but his move to China leaves question marks surrounding the Navy Blues in 2025. New arrival Marokhy Ndione scored three times in the Liiga Cup and if he can provide a similar output in the league
Unlike many others, Gnistan have managed to keep hold of their main attacking outlet, Joakim Latonen
They were well clear of the drop zone in 2024
but if the threat of Latonen can be stifled
second-season syndrome could be a real danger for Helsinki’s 'other' club
The 12 teams face each other home and away between Saturday’s first round and the 22nd and final round at the end of August
the division splits into two - the top six head to the Championship Round and the bottom six play the Relegation Round
which both consist of another five matches
Points from the regular season are carried over
the 11th-placed side plays a Playoff against the runners-up from the Ykkosliiga and the teams finishing fourth to eighth overall battle it out for the final European place
when HJK will have the first chance to get one over Ilves in the curtain-raiser
while the champions start out against the Liiga Cup champions
Here are the opening day fixtures in full (17:00 Finnish time unless stated):
Ilves vs HJK (15:00)
Inter Turku vs KuPS
KTP vs SJK
Mariehamn vs Jaro
VPS vs AC Oulu

Saoirse Noonan's hat-trick inspired Celtic as they came from behind to beat KuPS of Finland after extra-time and reach their mini-tournament final at the first stage of Women's Champions League qualifying.
Roosa Ariyo fired the Kansallinen Liiga champions ahead after 18 minutes in Lithuania, but substitute forward Noonan headed the equaliser after the break before slotting two more in added time.
Celtic will face either hosts Gintra or Anenii Noi of Moldova, who play later on Wednesday at Siauliai Central Stadium, in Saturday's final.
As first-time Scottish champions, 74th-placed Celtic headed to Lithuania as the lowest-ranked of the four sides - 20 adrift of Gintra, 10 places below KuPS and two behind Anenii Noi.

Are Celtic and Rangers ready for Champions League?
They had also been held to a surprise goalless draw at home by Hibernian on Friday as they fell two points behind Rangers five games into the new Scottish Women's Premier League season.
KuPS, who lie second behind HJK Helsinki midway through their own domestic season, started the sharper side and Finland-born Nigerian striker Ariyo pounced after a slack pass in midfield to fire low past goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty after 18 minutes for her sixth goal in five games.
Celtic's Hana Kerner fired wide just before the break, but Daugherty had to produce two fine saves before the Scottish champions got back into the game.
Goalkeeper Ellan Arpiainen saved superbly from Caitlin Hayes but soon after failed to hold the defender's cross and it fell kindly for Noonan to nod in from close range just after the hour mark.
Celtic were by now the side in the ascendency, but the Finns resisted doggedly until Kit Loferski held off a challenge and laid it into the path of summer signing Noonan to slot the Scots into the lead.
The Republic of Ireland forward then pounced on a wayward pass at the edge of the area to poke home her sixth goal of the campaign as KuPS suffered their first defeat - other than three at the hands of HJK - in 22 outings this season.
Now only Gintra or Anenii Noi stand between Celtic and a two-legged round-two tie to decide who reaches the 16-team group stage.

The January transfer window is in full swing, but Hibs have only confirmed a number of outgoing deals as the clock ticks down to deadline day
Jake Doyle-Hayes saw his contract terminated while Noah Kenneh was sent out on loan to Ross County for a second spell
There’s also been movement with some of the younger stars at Easter Road – but fans are desperate for the club’s first incoming
David Gray has continually promised both ins and outs and has recently stressed there is no panic in trying to get business over the line
Could Hibs’ first addition of the January window be a Finland U19 midfielder who plies his trade with KuPS
It is being reported by Swedish outlet FotbollDirekt that Hibs have made a bid for KuPS teenage sensation Matias Siltanen
It was initially claimed that Premier League club Bournemouth made the transfer offer for the 17-year-old
but FotbollDirekt are clarifying that it has actually came from Easter Road
Bournemouth and Hibs share a strategic partnership with each other through Bill Foley’s Black Knight Football Group and work together on areas such as recruitment
Hibs have reportedly offered 10 million Swedish Krona for Siltanen
That is said to be the same amount lodged by Swedish outfit Djurgårdens IF
who are in fact said to be leading the chase for the youngster
Matias Siltanen is a central midfielder and has already played 43 times for the KuPS senior side despite being just 17
He graduated from the Finnish club’s academy in 2023 and has been a regular starter ever since
He helped KuPS to the 2024 Veikkausliiga title and his performances have attracted interest
The 2025 league season for Finland does not start until April but Siltanen did feature in four Europa Conference League qualifying matches in the summer
the Guardian named Siltanen in their list of world football’s top 60 most exciting young talents – just the third time for a Finnish player
He won the Veikkausliiga Rookie of the Year award in 2024 so there is no wonder Hibs are reportedly trying to sign the kid this month
Hundreds of children in the community have learned to dance under the instruction of Kimi Kups-Benson during the last 30 years
pirouette and leap while instilling confidence and giving kids a safe space to be themselves
Kups-Benson never imagined the studio would become what it is today
“It’s pretty amazing what has happened,” she said
Kups-Benson began dancing at 3 years old and has not stopped
She moved with her family to Marshalltown in 1979 and began taking dance classes from Lyn Neuhaus
When the opportunity came to open a studio through the Y in 1990
she was uncertain but decided to go for it
Kups-Benson was just 18 years old when she began teaching around 60 students in Marshalltown and 40 in Eldora
racquetball courts and many other nooks and crannies before getting the studio space she has now
Kups-Benson said she did not have all the knowledge but was able to succeed because of her gumption
She has continued to educate herself in order to be the best dance teacher she can be
“I started as a one-woman show literally and now I have a staff of nine teachers and assistants,” Kups-Benson said
She said she always wanted to include other teachers and offer them that artistic expression
The Dance Konnection has grown to around 340 dancers and is the oldest and biggest studio in Marshalltown
Some of the traditions Kups-Benson created have been affected by the pandemic
Instead of performing at the Marshalltown High School Community Auditorium
dancers performed outside on a rented stage July 10-12
Staff wore masks when interacting with kids
dancers came in shifts and they limited the number of attendees
Choreography was changed to prevent touching between dancers
“It will definitely be a recital they remember,” Kups-Benson said
She said it was a lot of work on her staff’s part and lost sleep for her
the shows went smoothly and the dancers had a great time
The kids deserved to have the recital after all the hard work they put in
“We’ve got to put a period at the end of the sentence for these kids,” she said
The changes will continue in the fall when they will take dancers’ temperatures and sanitize surfaces including floors and mats
Kups-Benson’s biggest priority is to not let the changes take away the great experience for kids
“A dance studio is a safe place for kids to be who they want to be,” she said
Kups-Benson will make sure the kids are still able to move around
“We’re still dancing,” she said

You can expect to see this massive trend continue to grow and evolve. Texas chefs are integrating birria into grilled cheese sandwiches, putting it on pizza, wrapping it in griddled costra tacos, and even stuffing it in wontons
but you still can’t go wrong with a classic birria taco
Below are three of my favorites from across the state
but it soon expanded the menu to include tacos
Its birria de res tacos (above) are filled with shredded beef (res) cushioned by a melted quesillo-cheddar combo and are then crisped up on the flattop griddle
which is served with a vermilion consommé of birria broth
Save room for an order of wontons also stuffed with the birria mixture
but when he switched to a luscious chile guajillo and brisket birria a month later
Birria de res is now the focus of his menu
Order the quesotaco (one of several names for a birria taco with cheese)
which features juicy chopped beef inside a griddled-cheese shell atop a corn tortilla
making it sturdy enough to handle a good soak in the consommé
Though newer taco operations have gone all in on birria de res
birria was originally made with goat or lamb in the Mexican state of Jalisco
The Aguiñaga family has been serving classic birria de borrego (lamb) since 2006
first at the original Birrieria Aguiñaga restaurant
these tacos are Texas’s gold standard for the traditional style and protein

Joining his 11th club in 11 years, Freddy Adu has signed with Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) of the Finnish Veikkausliiga
The deal is for one year and will begin as soon as Adu completes his medical
They finished 7th in the league last season.
Adu will not be the only American on the KuPS squad. Also signed is former New England Revolution defender Stephen McCarthy, as well as Canadian midfielder Charlie Trafford, who was named KuPS Player of the Year in 2014. Trafford spent some time in the Vancouver Whitecaps academy.
Adu, 25, originally turned professional when he was 14, signing with D.C. United. He has since played for Real Salt Lake and the Philadelphia Union in MLS, as well as having stints in Portugal, France, Greece, Turkey, and Brazil. He was with Serbian Superliga club FK Jagodina in 2014, but did not make a league appearance; he did feature in a cup match for the Blues.
The Finnish league begins play on April 12, when KuPS travel to Ilves.

Saoirse Noonan scored a hat-trick for Celtic in their Champions League win over KuPS
The Scottish side were trailing after Rosa Ariyo scored in the 18th minute and the Douglas native equalised at the start of the second half by heading in from close range
It was 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra-time started with Noonan finishing off a neat little passage of play involving Katherine Loferski
The Republic of Ireland international completed her hat-trick by pressing high
The result gives Celtic just their second ever win in the Women's Champions League
and it means they are close to competing in the group stage for the first time
Celtic have to play one more game in their qualifying window
and that will be followed by the play-off round
Noonan has been a sensation since she arrived in Parkhead
and it started with the striker scoring a brace during a 9-0 victory over Dundee United on the opening day of the Scottish Women's Premier League
The Douglas native hit the back of the net in the 22nd minute by turning in a corner
and the striker got her second by hitting the ball off the underside of the crossbar at the start of the second half
Noonan has joined Celtic during one of their most successful times in their whole history
The Hoops won the Scottish Women's Premier League last year for the first time
and that followed a number of victories in domestic cup competitions
That started with a cup double during the 2021-22 season
and the Hoops defended their Scottish Cup title in 2023
Celtic plan on kicking on and becoming a dominant side in Scottish women's football
a tag almost exclusively held by Glasgow City
Their cross town rivals are the only team from Scotland to win ten league titles in a row and they famously reached the quarter finals of the Women's Champions League
where they lost to eventual runners up Wolfsburg

For many obsessive fans who grew up in the pre-Internet era
a passion for music was sparked in the dingy basements and dark booths of college radio stations
Despite sound boards that are decades out of date and rapidly-changing tastes
The best college stations remain dedicated to delivering music that falls outside the purview of Billboard-charting mainstream radio
the shifting climate has caused student station managers and music directors to work harder at keeping their stations relevant
And with good reason: at the radio station
they found comrades with whom they could trade mixtapes and stay up late into the night raving about life-changing B-sides
Bandcamp speaks from personal experience: even if our first shows were at 4am on Tuesday nights
they were the best two hours of our entire week
In this feature called Better Know a College Radio Station
music directors and general managers who make sure the “On-Air” light never burns out
In our first installment, we spotlight 90.1 FM KUPS
“The Sound,” which broadcasts from the University of Puget Sound in beautiful Tacoma
We caught up with that station’s General Manager Will Winston during their last month of college
I will have graduated and passed the position onto Drew Abelson for next year
I’ve gone by a lot of different DJ names—my first and most popular moniker was DJ Chilly Willy
I’ve gone by DJ Empathy and have lately been enjoying performing as DJ Demigirl
KUPS had a very limited AM broadcast in 1968
Our five genre block system of free-form radio programming was established around 1999
We won the mtvU Woodie Award for Best College Radio Station in the country in 2009
which was also the year we added Serato Scratch to our DJ equipment
Serato uses time-coded vinyl and a virtual DJ interface to help DJs become familiar with how old-school mixing works
This was the beginning of a culture at KUPS that teaches DJs how to creatively transition between songs
which is something that I think is unique about the station
I facilitated the purchase of two CDJ-900 (CD USB turntables) to ensure that KUPS had complete access to industry-standard DJ equipment and keep this culture going
What is your station’s online presence like
We used to use Tumblr a lot but have strayed from that platform in the past few years
The way Facebook has evolved in terms of content visibility
there is definitely room for expansion in our creative presence on the web
DJs and campus members sometimes submit write-ups for our website
but most of our online reading content is produced by staff members
One of my favorite recurring pieces that we do on our website are the “DJ of the Week” interviews
where the Digital Media director interviews a DJ in a different genre every week about their interests
where we accept art from the campus community based on a certain theme (the last one was “spooky/halloween”) to print a limited run of stickers
We upload each submission to our Instagram and the one that gets the most likes within a designated time period is selected
A lot of these interactions happen between Music Directors and their community of DJs
organize listening or mixing parties off-campus
MDs spend a lot of time in the office sorting through the piles of mail that we get
and piles become shelves as they organize the releases
MDs often invite their genre DJs to shows in Tacoma and Seattle
The rest of our staff is involved with this
but the structural focus in this area is on the relationship that the MD has with their genre DJs
I remember the Electronic MD during my first year as a KUPS DJ quite fondly
and he really helped foster a space for me to grow and connect musically and as a selector
Mark Marder did a radio show this year called “Death World Wide” that featured loud rock from a different country each week
Arda Bulak’s show is called “Vinyl Selections” where he showcases a variety of Jazz
or do members of the community participate as well
but our Operations Advisor is a community member
and are not closed off to the community in this sense
But virtually all of our applicants are students
There are a good number of talk shows and music-based shows that bring in community members to speak
We also host in-studio performances that sometimes feature community music groups
We have human DJs every day until 3 or 4 AM
our infamous infinite playlist—which we’ve named Zarvox—plays music
we have been experimenting with ‘open programming’ which fills these in-between slots
but this system needs work and a few fresh ideas
It’s really hard to say what the most popular genre on our station is
Alternative and Specialty occupy the most hours of programming
and there is a lot of awesome music in those slots
Hip-hop and electronic spots are more limited
Loud Rock attracts a smaller crowd but still gets filled up and showcases a great diversity of heavier music
People get really psyched up about funk and jazz shows
but others are also excited about talk shows
What are some local Tacoma/Seattle bands in heavy rotation at the moment
What will you miss most about working at the radio station after you graduate
There are so many resources available to you if you work at the station
Even though you get to hold on to some of those resources after leaving the station
I will never experience them in the same way again
How about bands that you’re really excited about right now
And she’s got a massive collection of varying
Vektroid is still making music today that is slightly more polished but still funky
Nightspace is a Seattle-based artist that make what they describe as ‘darkwave.’ Their live performance is extremely engaging—but I’m not going to describe it because I don’t feel I could do it justice
strangely elegant synthpop to be found here
They just have a demo on Bandcamp but released an EP titled Untrue last year

We all know the Birmingham metro has no shortage of great local coffee shops. However, if you’re a north-of-Birmingham resident that prefers not to head all the way downtown for a quality cup of joe, we’ve got NEWS. FOR. YOU.
Kind Kups Coffee is set to open March 2020 in Cleveland, AL.

Owners April and Kevin Browning shared a dream of opening a coffee shop that encourages and speaks life into everyone who walks through the doors
After spending a few months meeting with the owners of local coffee shops like Innova Coffee and Nonfiction Coffee Co., they purchased land in Blount County where Kind Kups would be built.
“Kind Kups exists to serve good coffee, teas and smoothies, to offer a warm environment for community and fellowship and to spread kindness one cup at a time.”

Kind Kups Coffee will be serving up all kinds of amazing beverages. Classic coffee drinkers will be a fan of their delicious brews, as will drinkers of sweeter caffeinated treats like macchiatos, frappuccinos, lattes, etc.
Coffee fan or not, you’re sure to find something that will hit the spot. From fresh fruit smoothies and refreshers to unique treats like the Black Panther made with steamed coconut milk, activated charcoal coconut shells, vanilla syrup and whipped topping—there’s something here for everyone.

Ok, sure. Most coffee shops have some sort of pastry/baked good collection available for sale. But do most coffee shops have a Nutella & Fruit Waffle Taco? I think not.
While Kind Kups’ full menu hasn’t been released yet, if this preview is any indication, we are pumped.

Saoirse Noonan scored a hat-trick as the Hoops fought back from a goal down in their first qualifier.
The game was played at a neutral venue in Lithuania on Wednesday morning.
Elena Sadiku’s side went a goal behind following an early strike by Roosa Ariyo on the 18th minute.
Noonan equalised for the Scottish champions just after the hour-mark to make it 1-1 and take the game to extra-time.
After the restart the Irish forward hit a quick fire double to give the Hoops a 3-1 lead, which they held onto for the remaining 15 minutes to book a place in the next round.
They will now play the winner of Gintra and Anenii Noi for a place in the playoff stage.
