It was Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano who first noticed the similarities between the business of football and what Walt Disney started a century ago
sell T-shirts and instigate theme parks,” he wrote in Goal: The Ball Doesn’t Go In By Chance in 2009
“Manchester United might not have had Mickey Mouse
who used to sell a whole lot of television programmes (football matches)
and to turn Old Trafford into a lucrative theme park.”
This “Disneyfication” of football is the theory underpinning the multi-club ownership model that Soriano has implemented at City Football Group
the holding company that owns stakes in 13 clubs
But a £6million ($8m) legal case filed at London’s Commercial Court in March has revealed that John Textor
the man behind the Eagle Football group of clubs
has spotted another potential multi-club benefit: managerial recruitment
Textor’s pitch to former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Bruno Lage in July 2023 appears to have been words to the effect of ‘join our Brazilian subsidiary Botafogo for six months and
we will move you to one of our sexier posts at Crystal Palace or Lyon’
This is not an offer any owner of a single club could put forward
will hinge on whether such promises are enforceable
Lage didn’t get his move to the Premier League or Ligue 1 — and now he wants around £6m for the ‘job offer’ that never came
were top of the Serie A table in Brazil but without a head coach
as Portuguese manager Luis Castro had just joined compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi side Al Nassr
Having been sacked by Wolves in October 2022
Lage was available and looked like a decent fit at Botafogo
as Botafogo had made their best ever start to the season and were seven points clear at the top of Brazil’s Serie A
Botafogo were a very surprising league-leader and there was still a lot of football to be played
Brazil is a long way from the bright lights of European football’s biggest stages and that was where Lage really wanted to be
he needed some assurances from Eagle that this move away from Europe was not permanent
Eagle gave him a six-month contract to see out the rest of the Brazilian season and a side deal
that detailed a potential promotion to Crystal Palace or Lyon
The particulars of the claim were filed in London by Lage’s lawyer
which is a statement of facts that precedes all the legalese
Crystal Palace and OL (Olympique Lyonnais or
as Eagle owns 43 per cent of the Premier League club
It then says that Lage is to be employed by Botafogo from July 15 to December 31 but
“Eagle Holdings is desirous of engaging (Lage) as head coach of either Crystal Palace or OL” and Lage “is desirous of being engaged as head coach of Crystal Palace or OL”
“The parties have agreed that during the period January 1
Eagle Holdings must use its powers as beneficial owner of Crystal Palace and OL to offer the head coach a new position as head coach of the men’s professional football first team at either Crystal Palace or OL,” it says
includes letting Lage appoint his own assistants
net of tax and social security contributions”
as football agents have often put it to English clubs
there was a reciprocal agreement by Lage that he would pay Eagle Football the same sum “in compensation” if he took a job in the restricted period
Lage was committing to making “himself available” to Eagle during this period
and the parties “intend this retainment agreement to be legally binding”
After Roy Hodgson fell ill in February 2024, Crystal Palace replaced him with Oliver Glasner
the Austrian coach who was in demand after successful stints at LASK
Getting Glasner looked like a coup at the time for Palace and that is how it has panned out
Lage’s name was never linked with the role in any media report that The Athletic can remember
Lyon, meanwhile, had Pierre Sage in the dugout
He had initially taken the role on an interim basis in November 2023
Textor officially gave him the job until the end of the season
Sage was then given a new two-year contract that summer as a reward for getting Lyon into the Europa League
Lage was linked with this job in the media
but Sage was the man in possession and nobody thought it was odd that he ended up keeping it
Lage, however, was very much available by this point, as he and Botafogo had parted company on October 3
less than three months after taking the job
In a post-match press conference on September 3 after Botafogo had lost 2-1 at home to local rivals Flamengo
Lage said: “Regarding this thing of only looking at my career at Botafogo
“There is only one way to free them from this pressure
I have thought a lot and I am putting my position at the disposal of the director
“I have a contract with Botafogo until December
I have prizes that are practically guaranteed for going to the Libertadores
but I have no problem giving that up because I’m not greedy for money
“What I cannot allow is for the pressure that is being exerted on me to be exerted on my players
My place is at the disposal of whoever is in charge
Eagle’s interpretation can be found in the statement it released when news of Lage’s legal action emerged last month
which it says “relates to a dispute over the proper interpretation of a historical agreement” between the parties
It continues by saying that Eagle does not believe Lage has a case and it will “vigorously defend the claim”
We then get this withering assessment of Lage’s exit
“Eagle Football notes that Bruno Lage’s claim relates to an alleged failure to offer him a role at one of its clubs
if he were terminated by one of Eagle Football’s clubs
“Eagle Football finds it curious that Bruno Lage feels aggrieved at not having been made such offer
he effectively walked away from one of Eagle Football’s clubs
at a time when he was highly supported by ownership
Mr Lage announced that he should be terminated
while walking out of a live press conference after Botafogo’s game against its biggest rival
His abdication of his leadership position was a clear breach of his agreement and Eagle Football remains surprised that he would characterise his departure as a unilateral termination.”
It adds Eagle is “happy” to see Lage back in management with Benfica
and “remains open to an honest and constructive discussion with him to resolve this dispute”
nor his lawyer has responded to requests for comment
but his demands are very clearly spelt out in the legal documents
“If Eagle Holdings fails to secure that Crystal Palace or OL makes a job offer during the restricted period
then Eagle Holdings shall pay to (Lage) the sum of $3.6million net of tax and social security contributions,” the claim says
It concludes by noting that this payment was due on April 29
costs and whatever damages the court sees fit to award
but I think as we see more multi-club ownership models
things like this will become more prevalent,” Jamie Singer
a founding partner of sports specialist Onside Law
“A fundamental principle of English contract law is that an agreement to agree is unenforceable
this retainment agreement looks very like an agreement to agree
“It’s also difficult to see what consideration Lage is providing
forgoing other employment opportunities after Botafogo.”
an international sports lawyer and an associate professor at Sheffield Hallam University
is another who thinks Lage’s legal team have their work cut out and might want to exhaust football’s usual disciplinary procedures — via the English Football Association or FIFA — before going to court
“Football parties are subject to regulatory restrictions in that they must follow arbitration and avoid recourse to national courts,” Ioannidis says
“This is a strict rule that national associations tend to enforce
this is going to be tricky because we are looking at allegations of a breach of contract for a promise made regarding an employment opportunity in the future
“There may also be jurisdictional issues — say he is successful in his claim
he may find it difficult to recover monies
The claim may be dismissed before it even starts
“That’s why I advise clients to go through the usual disciplinary process — FIFA has more power to enforce decisions at a global level with harsher punishments.”

Tenor great talks touring with Julian Lage
Asante Santi Debriano and Living Colour's Will Calhoun
In a recent interview with pianist Pablo Held
eminent tenor saxophonist and multireedist Joe Lovano spoke about “living in the library of sounds and spirits of the masters.” For me Lovano is very much a part of that library
When I saw the personnel of his new Paramount Quartet (Julian Lage on guitar
Asante Santi Debriano on bass and Will Calhoun of Living Colour fame on drums)
I vividly recalled past Lovano quartets I’d seen live
Christian McBride and Lewis Nash lineup from Quartets: Live at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note
documented on Blue Note with I’m All for You (2004) and Joyous Encounter (2005)
The Paramount Quartet kicks off its European tour this week with an appearance at Cadogan Hall in London on Thursday
Audiences are in for a treat: Julian Lage has done captivating work of late with his own projects and those of Kris Davis
Panamanian-born Asante Santi Debriano’s current band is the nine-piece Arkestra Bembe
which released Ashanti (Truth Revolution) in 2022; the bassist’s raft of sideman credits include Larry Coryell
1995) as well as Debriano’s Artistic License (Savant
We caught up with Lovano via Zoom from his home in upstate New York
and we started to project into this period now
We have quite a lot of dates: eleven concerts in Europe starting this week
then in March and April another 14 in the States
After that we go back in the studio with Manfred [Eicher] and document the quartet for ECM
So Van Gelder’s that day was the first time Julian met and played with Santi and Will and the music just poured out of everyone in a natural way
Everybody played with a real sense of listening
It’s an amazing period for me these last few years with Trio Tapestry [pianist Marilyn Crispell
and also co-leading an ensemble with [guitarist] Jakob Bro [heard on the 2022 ECM release Once Around the Room: A Tribute to Paul Motian]
The approach in that band is like a little orchestra
So after we come home from this Paramount tour
one with Trio Tapestry and one with Jakob and the band
It’ll be incredible to come off this tour and step into that

Artists Album ReviewsReview: Julian Lage’s ‘Speak to Me’ Is a Deep and Multifaceted Album from the Young MasterWhether you’ve been out of the Lage loop or you’re simply Lage-curious
this album feels like the perfect vehicle to explore his talents as a player
2023); and a masterful acoustic trio date with reeds legend Charles Lloyd and Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain (Lloyd’s Trio of Trios
Whether you’ve been out of the Lage loop or you’re simply Lage-curious, his latest album, Speak to Me
feels like the perfect vehicle to explore his seemingly boundless talents as a player
one-hour set covers an amazingly broad range of styles and different instrumental configurations
including solo acoustic; the trio with Roeder
and Lage playing either electric or acoustic (and both on one composition); and several pieces where the sound is further filled out with contributions from Levon Henry on saxophone or clarinet
The brilliant musician/producer Joe Henry (Solomon Burke
Rhiannon Giddens) helmed the sessions at Brooklyn Recording (engineered by Mark Goodall) and expertly captured every nuance of the undeniable chemistry of the different groupings
Lage wrote the entire album—the bones of the tunes—but it is the combined improvisational wizardry of the players
that makes this set so compelling and exceptional.
You never quite know where a piece is headed—the beginning rarely seems to foretell the middle or the end—or how the musicians are going to interact with each other
or who will suddenly come to the forefront and dominate
is as technically faultless as it is imaginative
moving easily from fleet-fingered flights to beautiful ballad spaces to jazzy/bluesy grooves to unpredictable discordance.
But all of the players get their chances to stand in the spotlight
and the album is also laced with subtle instrumental touches that don’t necessarily command attention but add so much color and texture—a background organ wash
the resonant rumble of a low alto clarinet
There’s a lot going on within these pieces
with many containing surprising tempo and rhythm changes and textural shifts
but they never feel cluttered; there’s always room to breathe
There are delicately etched melodies (“Hymnal,” “Serenade,” “Myself Around You”)
chugging rhythmic workouts (“Northern Shuffle,” “Speak to Me,” “76,” “Two and One”)
catchy tunes (“Omission,” “Tiburon,” “Nothing Happens Here”)
a dollop of old-fashioned folk (part of “South Mountain”)
and even one that sounds like it could have been a jazz standard in the ’40s (“As It Were”)
Lage plays acoustic guitar on nine of the tunes: his sparkling signature Collings OM1A JL on six and a wonderfully warm 1930s Gibson L-0 on three
mostly distortion-free electric lines come courtesy of a Nachocaster (guitar maker Nacho Baños’ contemporary version of a vintage Fender Telecaster) and on one
Every time I’ve listened to Speak to Me it has revealed new things and a new favorite track has emerged

The Estadi Olímpic is already donned in blaugrana for the Champions League
This afternoon it played host to the Benfica's pre-match press conference and training session
The Portuguese side arrived this morning with the aim of turning the two-legged tie around to go through to the next round
they'll have to defeat a very much in-form Barça side going for another win in the tie in order to achieve that goal
Benfica coach Bruno Lage is very aware of the situation
acknowledging that Barça are a very strong side
We have the courage and ambition to do it again"
Despite Benfica's confidence regarding getting a good result against Barça
the coach praised the blaugrana playing style
but they are also deadly in one-on-one situations"
Lage considers that the Catalans are potent in attack too
as he went on to say that "they are very strong and we can't just base our approach on defending against Lamine
Raphinha and Lewandowski play very well too and can cause us a lot of problems"
Bruno Lage gave some clues as to where they will try to do damage to the blaugranes
He thinks that the defence and goal are the key despite their talent
stating that "we see that Barça set up the defence in one way or another depending on the players
We need to understand where the spaces will be and I think we can do that very well"
Defender Tomás Araújo is available for the game and spoke to the press before his coach

Silva is expected to leave Wolves for good in the summer transfer window once his time at Las Palmas has concluded
With 10 goals in La Liga for the relegation-threatened side, Silva has been making the headlines during his loan spell
The Old Gold haven’t seen anywhere near the level expected from the forward during his time in the West Midlands following his record £35m transfer in 2020
The Portugal U21 international’s failure in England hasn’t been solely his fault, as Wolves have seen a host of managers come and go over the years, each of them unable to unlock Silva
Silva was an admirer of Nuno Espirito Santo
but only had a season to work with his countryman
Bruno Lage replaced Nuno
the coach sanctioned Silva’s first loan away from Molineux
a move to Anderlecht that the Portuguese manager had high hopes for
After Silva’s exit, Lage revealed his desire for Silva to put together a strong campaign in Belgium before returning, prompting the striker to take inspiration from Morgan Gibbs-White
“It’s about the opportunity to find the best space to continue to grow up
be happy and score goals,” Lage said of Silva in 2022
“I want to look at the end of the season and see the same as what happened with Morgan
and now he can be an important player for the team and me
Lage was left inspired by Gibbs-White’s transformation on loan at Sheffield United
a single season that had the former manager wanting the same from Silva
Wolves watched Gibbs-White go from an academy-produced fringe player to a talent ready to become a Premier League regular
The levels the midfielder showed in the Championship with the Blades paved the way for his Molineux exit, a transfer that added £42.5m to Wolves’ budget
Though Gibbs-White is not a popular figure at Wolves, the playmaker’s loan was considered a benchmark for success for others to follow, highs that Lage wanted from Silva.
The Englishman caught Nottingham Forest’s attention with his 22-goal contribution season at Brammall Lane, as he flourished in a starring role away from Molineux.
While Silva went on to excel over two loans in 2022/23, representing Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven, the striker was unable to transform as Lage had hoped, returning as a player still shy of hitting Premier League standards.
To this day, Gibbs-White’s loan at Sheffield will be considered an inspiration to those who leave Molineux in search of building an identity, being proof that time away sometimes holds the answers.
extends winning streak for five matches in a row
It meant a lot for the result, but most of all, for team solidity on the pitch: Benfica's 4-0 win against Atlético de Madrid during the Champions League second round Head coach Bruno Lage managed to get the most out of his squad

the Portuguese did not give their opponent an inch
Estádio da Luz hosted another exhibition of strength by the Encarnados
who now accumulate six points in the competition and are tied with Brest
This victory places the team in third position in the ranking
Bruno Lage insisted upon the union within the squad
"This winning streak created the fantastic atmosphere we had today," said the coach
the relationship between the players and the fans has been of extreme importance for these good performances from the team
creating an atmosphere according to Lage that boosted the execution
The coach also praised both the contributions of the starters and those of the substitutes: "Once again
it was the best version of each player," Lage stated
There's little doubt that Benfica is in a good moment
Five victories in a row had attested to the fact that the team was ready for the challenges of the Champions League
Lage remains cautious: "We've got six points
But we still have six matches and 18 points to fight for," he stated
he knows that it is a long road and demands constant focus
Bruno Lage's leadership is lauded most for the commitment of the player to preparation
The manager spoke of hours upon hours spent in learning and internalizing tactical ideas to lay the foundation for what has been happening on the pitch
"The players are spending a lot of time in a room
to better understand our ideas," Lage said
That is the level of commitment that has made a difference
especially with set pieces and quick transitions
Benfica managed to neutralize Atlético de Madrid and capitalized on created opportunities
Lage praised the players for being able to do what they had worked out in training
and that reflects the effort the team has been putting into understanding and following the instructions of the coach

Bruno Lage’s smart tactics lead Benfica to a dominant win
The transfer window may have shut last week but the future of several stars at Molineux is already being discussed
Wolves are in talks to terminate Craig Dawson’s contract, with Vitor Pereira leaving him out of his Premier League squad alongside Sasa Kalajdzic
Pereira could also see several players depart on a free transfer, with Pablo Sarabia likely to leave Wolves alongside right-back Nelson Semedo
Semedo sees his contract expire in June 2025
and there have been suggestions the Portuguese international won’t sign fresh terms
One of those has come from expert Liam Keen, who claims Semedo could leave Wolves this summer after almost five years at the club
The 31-year-old was only named as captain in December but his high wages and age mean it could be difficult to hold onto him
Now, it has emerged that former Wolves manager Bruno Lage
who worked with the ex-Barcelona man at Molineux
could poach the right-back on a free transfer
According to SIC commentator Luis Aguilar
there is a ‘possibility’ Semedo will return to his former club Benfica in the summer market
with Lage reportedly in the market for a new right-back
Semedo was the ninth most-used player during Lage’s 15-month stint at Wolves from July 2021 to October 2022
and it meant he faced at least a month on the sidelines
The ex-Benfica star was an integral player under Lage at this point and he praised the Portugal international
“Nelson is going to be out for at least one month. Let’s see how he goes, but we have that news for now – one month out,” Lage said via Birmingham Live
Considering how highly he’s rated by the manager
it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Semedo return to his home country and link back up with Lage this summer
Lauded as one of the finest guitarists alive today
Julian Lage performed at the Grammys at 12 years old before graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 2008
Learning from elder jazz innovators like Jim Hall and Gary Burton further placed Lage in a renowned musical pedigree
His 2024 project Speak to Me brings an avant-garde twist to blues and Americana
never relegating itself to a particular niche
No doubt his formative experiences with some of the greats have put him in good stead to push the genre forward with every new project
It is left to him and an acoustic guitar to put this on full display tonight
Lage might be forgiven a level of exhaustion
he performs with a generous amount of vigour and playfulness
Lage opens with a lengthy section that flits over classical stylings with a tinge of the blues
Other anachronistic pairings are presented before settling into Gardens from 2015’s World’s Fair
Typical of Lage is his ability to expand indulgently on the fly
leading us down an apparently bottomless rabbit hole before returning to the main theme
A cover of Spike Hughes’s Nocturne from 1933 follows
This reference point is useful to hear how Lage takes core ideas as a jumping-off point to launch his improvised musings
It is done with the utmost respect to the source material
carefully returning to the original melody to avoid altering it beyond recognition
Blue Dove is based on Jim Hall’s reworking of a Mexican folk song
The arrangement fits very well on the acoustic guitar – Lage uses the full range of his instrument to pluck sharp twangs that smooth out into lighter passages that flutter along the guitar’s neck
Northern Shuffle appears on the album Speak to Me as a driving
bluesy number played on distorted electric guitar
Without a steady drum beat pounding along in the background
Lage wilfully plays with the audience’s expectations
only to launch back into the pulse he has been tapping on his foot the entire time
but the joy that Lage emits in these moments gives the sense that we’re being included in his own private jam session – who are we to judge
Perhaps it is expected of a generational talent that they can wield a single instrument with such variety and detail
The standing ovation he receives indicates that Lage can account even for that daunting reputation

Rivalries are the best and worst thing about football
the eternal dilemma of “how do we get back on top?” knowing failure means years in the wilderness
One such club who finds themselves in this unenviable position right now in Benfica
A European heavyweight with a rich history
Benfica are the most successful side in Portugal
They’ve won the Primeira Liga an astonishing 38 times
8 more than northern rivals Porto and almost double Lisbon rivals Sporting (20)
Jan-Niklas Beste: Benfica’s New German Wideman
the Reds have begun to suffer from an identity crisis
High player turnover has meant the club have struggled to cement an identity since 2019
they’ve had more managers since 2019 (4) than the previous ten years (2) and this has started impacting performances
The club has failed to win the league more than once over that period (poor by their standards)
Crosstown rivals Sporting became a powerhouse
he led the team to their first division title in 19 years during his first season in charge before dominating the league last season
promising side led by a talismanic striker in Viktor Gyökeres
Sporting are showing serious signs of entering a golden era
Understandably it’s set alarm bells ringing on the other side of the IP7
António Silva: The Lowdown on Benfica’s Prodigious Center Back
Lage started working at Benfica as a youth coach in 2004
He stayed at the club for 8 years before deciding to try his luck abroad
moving to UAE before following Carlos Carvalhal to England
he simply couldn’t stay away and by July 2018 he was back in Lisbon
In January of 2019 Benfica were struggling
stuck in 4th place and with no hope of winning the league
To try and fix the problem they fired Rui Vitoria and turned to Lage to fix the problem
designed to maximise wonder kid Joao Felix
As well as winning the league he won 94% of his matches and equalled the clubs record for goals scored in a season (103)
The following season was one of the clubs worst
Spells in England and Brazil were no better
Tactical Analysis: Roger Schmidt’s Benfica
After a lackluster 2023/24 season and an unconvincing start to this season Benfica decided they needed a new manager
determined to prove that his first season as the rule
Benfica’s problems over the last few years are best summed up by a word familiar to all Portuguese clubs
Player trading is a fact of life in Portugal
but Benfica have turned it into an art form
making an estimated 750m in transfer profit in the last decade
Anatoliy Trubin: Benfica’s New Goalkeeper
is likely to be happy with the defenders he’s inherited
are returning and the club have spent big to replace departing left/centre back Morato
bringing in Alvaro Carreras and Jan Niklas-Beste
Between the sticks should be a safe area too
young goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin led the Primeira in clean sheet percentage last season (46.4%)
Benfica’s midfield last season was special
defensive midfielder Florentino Luís was a wall
star boy Joao Neves ranked 4th in passes into the final third and Orkun Kökçü was 6th in progressive passes
Rafa Silva and Angel Di María were clinical
Orkun Kökçü: Analyzing Benfica’s New Signing in Midfield
The club has lost one of its most creative forces
the club hasn’t been idle to fix the issue
They’ve signed 3 new wingers and 3 central midfielders
only one (Kerem Aktürkoğlu) appears to have hit the ground running
For a team reliant on direct play from its wingers
the club has replaced expert passer Neves with box to box midfielder Leandro Barreiro (genuinely the first player I’ve come across from Luxembourg)
While Barreiro has plenty of talent his lack of skills in possession make the team’s ability to progress the ball through midfield very difficult
It’s easy to see why this is likely to be a big area of focus
Florentino Luis: Benfica’s Midfield Anchor
While it only needs some minor tweaks (unlike the midfield) Benfica’s front line looks very different to last season
Only one striker that scored 4 or more goals last season is still there
the club have signed Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis
There’s a lot riding on Pavlidis adapting quickly to life in Portugal
goals usually take the pressure off a new manager
Perhaps Lage’s biggest strength is his pragmatism
He’s more than willing to alter his formation depending on his players strengths
Lage favoured a 4-4-1-1 that allowed him to maximise the skill set of emerging wonderkid Joao Felix
At Wolves he used no less than seven different formations
With that being the case his formation might change
but the key principles will remain the same
Ángel Di María: The Quintessential Big Game Player
Lage’s other biggest strength is that he’s a defensively solid coach
When Lage’s team don’t have the ball in the attacking third
they adopt starting positions that force the opposition to go long
When this happens and the ball advances into the middle third
and players focus on blocking passing lanes and pressuring opposition players
forcing them to make mistakes that Lage’s team can then aggressively exploit
If the opposition are then able to advance the ball into the defensive third
Lage’s team will adopt a low block and the formation becomes a narrow
compact 5-4-1 with wide players adopting deep positions and any forwards other than the central striker dropping into midfield
combined with a hybrid man/zonal marking policy ensures that players can swarm to the ball
generating a high number of defensive pressures and tackles making opposition shots on target very hard
It’s an extremely effective system that gets results
Benfica conceded the 2nd least goals in the division (31) while in his first season at Wolves they conceded the 4th fewest goals in the Premier League (43)
Benjamin Rollheriser: From the Heart of La Plata to the Coast of Portugal
While he’s rightly praised for his defensive solidity
Lage’s attacking record isn’t the best… Lage’s attacking record is
Are we going to get the record-breaking Benfica that scored 103 goals or the stale and boring Wolves side that ranked 17th and 20th for goals scored
I actually think it’ll be closer to his first spell at Benfica
Player Profile: Gianluca Prestianni
when the team was in possession it turned into a 2-2-5-1
Blessed with a perfect combination of deep lying playmaker (Gabriel) and defensive destroyer (Andreas Samaris) in the heart of his midfield
Lage’s build up play involved getting the ball to his deep-lying central midfielders who would then take up positions in front of the back four
This new defensive screen allowed Benfica’s full backs
Álex Grimaldo and André Almeida to push into more advanced roles while the two wingers moved into the half spaces on their side of the field
Gabriel could then choose either to distribute the ball out wide
creating an overload vs the opposition full back and generating crossing opportunities
or give the ball to Joao Felix centrally and watch the magic happen
It was devastatingly effective and saw 5 players score at least 15 goals while another 4 generated double digit assists
Lage is very likely to adopt some form of his old system during his 2nd spell
likely switching between his traditional 4-4-1-1 and a 4-2-3-1 and praying it works a 2nd time
I think the formation’s going to be what Lage has used already
Trubin and Silva’s places are guaranteed short of injury while Otamendi gets the nod despite his advancing years
Kaboré’s pace and Beste’s passing skills should allow them to get into advanced positions and open up crossing opportunities into Pavlidis
Florentino is the perfect defensive screen while Kokcu’s creativity will allow him to dictate play from deep
Aktürkoğlu will be expected to drift inside and create goal scoring opportunities from inside with Rollheiser
or his replacement if he isn’t clinical enough
while Di Maria’s crossing ability will generate further overloads on the right hand side
Vangelis Pavlidis: AZ’s Greek Forward
Pavlidis’s attributes as a target man mean he’s perfect to put away the masses of crosses this formation should generate while his ability to make runs in behind will allow the team to generate chances off of long balls
I think that Lage will keep Benfica competitive
He’s at a team he knows well and in a league his methods work well in so I think they’ll challenge for 2nd place
Amorim’s style and the quality of his players are simply too strong
and I think trying to beat Sporting using a method that’s worked before will ultimately fail

Benfica manager Bruno Lage addressed the media ahead of his team’s crucial UEFA Champions League round of 16 second-leg match against Barcelona
emphasising that if Benfica can create as many chances as they did in previous encounters
they have a realistic chance of securing a victory against the Catalan side
Benfica have suffered two defeats against Barcelona
but Lage believes that his team still has opportunities to turn the tie around
He acknowledged that Barcelona thrive on maintaining possession
“The approach is similar to that of the two previous games against Barça
perhaps with some different nuances in the strategy
the key would be to generate scoring opportunities while ensuring they have the necessary quality to convert them into goals
A comeback victory would be a significant achievement for the club
the most important thing is to create opportunities
but we must have the quality to take advantage of them
Coming back would give us a lot of prestige,” he noted
Lage reflected on the past performances against Barcelona and stated that his team had the sensation that they could have won both previous encounters
“We have the feeling that we could have won the two previous games because we created many chances and we believe that we can do it now,” he said
He remained focused on maintaining the strengths displayed in those past matches while recognising the challenge posed by Barcelona
a team filled with top-tier talent and still undefeated in 2025
we want to continue those two previous games against a Barça that is a great team
it is the only team that has not lost in 2025.”
Instead of singling out individual players
Lage preferred to analyse Barcelona as a collective unit
he did acknowledge that he was familiar with Raphinha from his time at Sporting CP and Leeds
praising the Brazilian’s impressive performances in Barcelona’s squad
“I knew Raphinha from Sporting de Portugal and Leeds
who knows if he could win the Ballon d’Or.”
He also mentioned that Lamine Yamal is among the best players in the world
though Benfica’s strategy would not revolve around stopping a single player
He also recognised the threats posed by Robert Lewandowski
who played a key role in the first-leg victory
but our strategy is not to focus on one player
Szczesny who was the best in the first leg,” he added
Lage also highlighted how Benfica carefully analyse their opponents
particularly in the absence of Pau Cubarsi
He explained that his team carefully studies opposition centre-backs
assessing their preferred passing angles and decision-making when building play from the back
“We prepare the strategy well to put pressure on the centre-backs
we look at which foot they use to come out from behind
the passing lines they usually use,” he explained

While Santana was touring the US with Jeff Beck
Lage turned up unannounced to meet his hero – and was invited onstage for a jam
Julian Lage is one of the world’s finest electric guitar players
so it will come as absolutely no surprise to learn he was already being tipped for greatness before he was even 10 years old
In a new episode of the Broken Records podcast
the jazz virtuoso reflects on his early guitar-playing years
and looks back on the time he shared the stage in front of 20,000 with a bona fide guitar legend… when he was just nine years old
The guitar legend in question was Carlos Santana
who at the time was touring the US with Jeff Beck
a chance encounter between his father and a friend of Santana’s put the aspiring guitarist on a path to the guitar gig of a lifetime
Lage recalls: “My father worked at Fog City diner in San Francisco and someone came in who he was friends with and he said
‘I know Santana and I heard your son's playing guitar.’ My dad said
Santana's playing at [a San Francisco venue] in two weeks
So we got in the car and we drove there and showed up at 2pm
This would have been when I was seven”
it was clear Santana had been expecting the Lage entourage: “We go backstage
‘Where's Carlos?’ ‘He's in that room.’ ‘Okay.’ So my parents and I
and that night it was Jeff Beck and him doing this tour
‘Do you want to play tonight?’”
Playing in front of 20,000 clearly wasn’t what Lage had planned for the evening and so – as you’d probably expect from a seven-year-old aspiring guitarist – he politely declined Santana’s offer
the offer was extended for another 12 months
I didn't come to play in front of 20,000 people
That's the point,’” Lage continues
you should just come again and bring your guitar.’
Lage’s long-awaited cameo – which saw the youngster solo through a cover of Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain – was captured on the night
and can be seen via grainy fan footage online
“It was surreal,” Lage says of the experience
I don't think I was in an environment that hyped anything up
And I've known people who have that figure in their life who says
kid.’ There was none of that good cop

An extraordinary artiste needs an extraordinary presentation for his life-story
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia has no equal in the field of flute virtuosos and it is not for nothing that he has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan all of 25 years ago
had directed a documentary named Bansuri Guru in 2013
his life is presented with a magical look at his music and persona
for besides his stature as a classical musician
who took the simple flute towards global acclaim
he was also a popular player in cinema (and many live shows)
a non-film classical composer and in movies (earlier in Oriyan cinema alone)
a part of an illustrious music duo that enriched Hindi cinema with outstanding musicals like Silsila
Lamhe and Sahibaan between 1981 and 1993: Shiv-Hari
have conceptualized the most exciting and ingenious tribute—a two-hour musical presentation titled Bansuri Jab Gaane Lage (When the flute begins to sing) on Panditji’s life
His friendship with the late Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and their emotional relationship is given due attention and importance
as is his heartwarming bond with Lata Mangeshkar
There are various different and refreshingly outre and original strokes used to narrate this succinct but scintillating saga
Five women played key parts in this wunderkind’s life: his mother
a neighboring aunt who gave him motherly affection and was also the wife of his first music guru
his loving and ever-supportive wife Anuradha
and finally the guru he approached when he was already successful on radio and in movies—Annapurna Devi
to learn classical music as a beginner (at 25-plus!)
all these roles are essayed expertly by Reshma Shetty
who also plays an additional role of a dancer (which she is in real life too) for whose performance Pt
Hariprasad also played the flute when he was young
The most ingenious aspect here is the use of a brilliant actor
playing—not the flute maestro—but his instrument
The bansuri thus takes on the mantle of the candid narrator and his story of how he was first discovered (through a wandering flautist) and even stolen by the legend makes for great listening indeed
Vikas also comes in as Raj Kapoor (who had once called Anuradha Chaurasia) and imitates the voice of Yash Chopra as well as Amitabh Bachchan in the song Rang barse from Shiv-Hari’s debut film
erroneously mentioned in the play as 1982)
Hariprasad’s life took many twists and turns
Born in a wrestler’s family (his father was very strict and wanted his son to follow suit)
he first secretly learnt music and his instrument and soon
his life took him to Cuttack’s All-India Radio
From there to Mumbai’s All-India Radio and thereon to become one of the most unavoidable musicians for all top composers in Mumbai and remain so for decades is a story that must be experienced rather than narrated in this review with all its triumphs and humor
The third stroke that scores high is the use of 20 popular film songs with apt-for-his-life lyrics
presented live by singers Pritha Mazumdar (of Mohabbatein fame) and Srikant Narayan (the popular voice of Rafi et al in stage shows) with great skill
These songs ably help demonstrate the highs and lows of Panditji’s life
that nine of the 20 tracks here are written by Anand Bakshi
who wrote lyrics for five of the composer’s eight films and was to do a film that never took off—B.R
The outstanding melodies presented included Phir wohi shaam
the Madan Mohan-composed classic from Jahan Ara (1964)
to lovelies like Jo waada kiya woh nibhana padega (Taj Mahal)
here Panditji played under the batons of all the top composers

Another one is a lovely tidbit of Sanjeev Kumar’s admiration for Panditji
is the surreal presentation of Panditji’s mother near the climax
speaking with pride as she watches (from above) her son’s progress and evolution
The emotional voltage of this imaginative sequence is massive
and proves the high-point of the absolutely masterful script (Suhail Abbasi with Pushpanjali Chaurasia

After the stage adaptation of Mughal-E-Azam

And apart from the entire team on stage and behind
the single soul responsible for this triumph is the titan being celebrated—Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia himself

Liam Keen reported last month that Semedo was likely to leave Wolves in the summer
with the club looking to get their wage bill down
It was then claimed that Semedo had interest from Benfica
Wolves have lost their captain in each of the last three summers and some are fearful of that happening again
Today, Bruno Lage was asked about Semedo ahead of Benfica’s Champions League match with Barcelona tomorrow night – and gave an interesting response
knows Semedo’s qualities well having spent 15 months as the head coach at Molineux
As has been the case ever since he arrived at Wolves
Today, following reports Benfica are ‘eager’ to sign Semedo in the summer
The former Wolves boss would not really be drawn on the speculation
He is quoted by A Bola as saying: “About Nelson
I believe that at this moment he will support Wolverhampton and about the possibility of him being a reinforcement or not
“And at the moment my focus is on what we can do tomorrow and understand very well what we will do until the end of the season
We are currently in the round of 16 of the Champions League
we depend on us to win the League and we have already won a title and our focus is on trying to win more titles by the end of this season.”
Semedo has been a great signing for Wolves and him leaving this summer would be a blow
He struggled in his first season, but has improved in every one since, with Semedo admitting 2023/24 was his best campaign for Wolves
The fact he was named Players’ Player of the Season last term would further suggest that
He does sometimes have poor outings and can be at fault positionally
Young Pedro Lima looks like a great prospect and someone who could potentially replace Semedo long-term
But losing the Portugal international could really sting

CRYSTAL PALACE co-owner John Textor is being sued for £6million by former Wolves boss Bruno Lage
The extraordinary lawsuit reported by The Telegraph sees Lage
suing Textor following the appointment of Oliver Glasner
He accuses the American businessman of signing a contract stating he would use his power as the largest shareholder at Selhurst Park and French giants Lyon to offer him the head coach role to at one of those teams
The alleged contract covers the period between January 1 to April 15 last year and was signed after Lage became manager of Textor's Brazilian side Botafogo
Lage, now in his second spell managing Portuguese side Benfica
was sacked less than three months into a six-month deal in July 2023 in what was his first job after being axed by Wolves in October 2022 following a 16-month spell in charge
The Portuguese was never publicly linked with the Palace job and the South London club ultimately appointed Glasner in February 2024 when Roy Hodgson stepped down after he was taken ill during training days before
Lyon made Pierre Sage their new boss in July after appointing him as an interim manager the previous November
Lage remained out of work during the alleged "restricted period" before taking the Benfica job
Documents seen by The Telegraph claim a "retainment agreement" signed by Textor would offer Lage a minimum of a two-year fixed-term contract with a salary of £3.6million for him and his staff
The "legally binding" contract also states Eagle Football Holdings would pay Lage that amount by April 29 last year if he failed to make such an offer during the agreed period.
costs and "further or other relief as the court deems fit," to a total amount of £5.9m
The lawsuit also claims the deal included a clause which would see Lage pay Textor £2.75m if he took a managerial role other than with one of Palace or Lyon during the same period
A statement from Eagle Football Holdings on the matter said: "Eagle Football is aware of a court claim filed against it on behalf of Bruno Silva Do Nascimento (known as ‘Bruno Lage’)
"The claim relates to a dispute over the proper interpretation of a historical agreement between Eagle and Mr Lage
Eagle’s view is that Mr Lage is not contractually entitled to the sums being claimed on his behalf
Eagle will vigorously defend the claim and seek to recover its costs of doing so from Mr Lage
"Eagle Football notes that Bruno Lage’s claim relates to an alleged failure to offer him a role at one of its clubs
"Eagle Football finds it curious that Bruno Lage feels aggrieved by this given that
he effectively walked away from one of Eagle Football’s clubs Botafogo
"Eagle Football remains open to a constructive discussion with Bruno Lage or his representatives with a view to resolving the dispute and settling the litigation which will ultimately serve neither party.”
Textor, 59, announced in May he was trying to sell his 45 per cent stake in Palace after declaring interest in buying fellow Premier League side Everton
The bid ultimately ended in failure due to the bid resting on Eagle Football Holdings losing its stake in a rival team
Crystal Palace currently sit 11th in the Premier League, four points behind rivals Brighton in ninth, and are in the FA Cup semi-finals against Aston Villa later this month
They face Manchester City away tomorrow morning but have not lost a football game since February 15

The jazz virtuoso has a close bond with the Telecaster
and one of his earliest experiences with the model involved some drastic relic'ing methods
Julian Lage has reflected on his relationship with the Fender Telecaster
prompting him to recall an especially radical relic’ing experiment he and his father once conducted on a pristine Tele
considering Lage is one of the most tasteful and expressive guitar players currently around
Lage has once again taken the Tele for a spin on Guitar Center’s YouTube channel in a video that also explores the influential jazz virtuoso’s history with the single-cut
The Telecaster’s influence can be traced all the way back to Lage’s earliest days as an aspiring guitar player
when his father made a plywood model of Bruce Springsteen’s famed ‘The Mutt’ model that Lage would carry around and pretend to play
He later upgraded to a proper functioning Stratocaster
but his father owned a Tele that they both decided to radically age using some DIY methods
being a brilliant artist and having an aesthetic background – this was before relic’ing was really a thing – and he said
‘I think we should make it look older.’
“We’d take the Tele out and hit it against curbs
And it was immaculate – by today’s standards it would be considered perfection
his own passion for the guitar – and the Telecaster specifically – stems from his childhood and these experiences he shared with his father
“His love of the instrument on a whole informed every thing I ever do as a guitar player
That’s something we bonded over.”
which involves completely removing the neck

“I remember there was a video of Gary Moore and he played Red House on this Fiesta Red Strat, and I thought it was just the most incredible thing”: Is Toby Lee Britain’s next blues-rock superstar?

This article is part of the Research TopicFrom an Ethic of Sufficiency to its Policy and Practice in Late CapitalismView all 10 articles
Sufficiency is an indispensable strategy for sustainable development that is gaining growing attention in both the scientific and the political sphere
the question of how sufficiency-oriented social change can be shaped by different actors remains unclear
There are many different concepts of sufficiency and all of them entail certain notions of social change
these notions of social change remain mostly implicit
By conducting a semi-systematic literature review on sufficiency and transformation
this article makes explicit notions of social change in various concepts of sufficiency
these notions are structured and discussed concerning their possible contribution to a broader socio-ecological transformation to advance the debate about sufficiency-oriented strategies
The literature was sampled by a systematic search in the databases of Web of Science and the ENOUGH-Network
a European network of sufficiency researchers
and complemented by texts known to the author
The sufficiency concepts were analyzed regarding two dimensions: the goal of and the approach toward social change
Various ecological and sometimes social goals that different concepts of sufficiency pursue were identified
Some scholars operationalize the social and ecological goals in a sufficiency-specific way as consumption corridors or a pathway toward a post-growth economy
three different approaches to sufficiency-oriented social change were identified: a bottom-up-approach
a policy-making-approach and a social-movement-approach
Specific contributions and limitations of these approaches were identified
The three approaches differ regarding the role of conflicts and the conceptualization of behavior and social practices
By interpreting the results utilizing the Multi-Level-Perspective of Sustainability Transition Research and Erik O
synergies for sufficiency-oriented social change were identified
The review founds a theoretical basis for further empirical and theoretical research on shaping sufficiency-oriented social change
By these two dimensions, sufficiency can be distinguished from the sustainability strategies of efficiency and consistency
Efficiency and consistency strategies are used to reduce the environmental damage per unit of products or services consumed and produced
do not describe absolute limits to consumption and production
efficiency and consistency strategies rely on (socio-)technical innovations
the sustainability goal were to reduce CO2-emissions for space heating in the residential sector
a possible sufficiency measure would not be to install better insulation in buildings (efficiency)
none of them have analyzed the notions of social change in different conceptualisations of sufficiency
Given the urgency of socio-ecological crisis
the growing recognition of the necessity of the sufficiency strategy and the difficulties to implement it
a reflection on the different notions of how to create and shape social change within the different concepts of sufficiency could help to advance the debate about sufficiency-oriented strategies
sufficiency-oriented social change is confronted with specific difficulties and requires separate consideration
a reflection on the implicit concepts of social change enables the identification of specific potentials and limits of the respective concepts of sufficiency
such a reflection enables the discussion of contradictions and synergies between the different concepts of sufficiency
Such a reflection on the concepts of social change present within concepts of sufficiency provides a basis for an elaborate discussion on the question of how and by whom social change toward sufficiency can be shaped
the notions of social change that are often implicit in the concepts of sufficiency need to be explicated and structured
this paper addresses the following research questions:
A Which sustainability goals and notions of social change do concepts of sufficiency imply
B What are the specific limitations and contributions of the different concepts of sufficiency concerning their notion of social change
C What are the contradictions and possible synergies among the different concepts of sufficiency
sufficiency policies and practices can be regarded a real utopia in a growth oriented economy and society
Wright's theory seems to be very applicable for reflecting on the different notions of social change in different sufficiency concepts
A semi-systematic review methodology was used to develop narratives and synthesize a broad inter-disciplinary strand of literature (Wong et al., 2013; Snyder, 2019). As Snyder (2019) points out
a semi-systematic review can be useful for detecting themes and theoretical perspectives and thus aids the development of a theoretical model
Snyder indicates that a semi-systematic approach can combine different methods of sampling (systematic or non-systematic) and analysis and evaluation (qualitative or quantitative)
not only peer-reviewed papers were included but also books and book chapters
which ensures a broader perspective on the sufficiency debate
The abstracts of the selected literature were screened for relevance to the research topic
which left a sample of 78 research articles
The second set of literature derives from the International Network for Sufficiency Research and Policy (ENOUGH) database. This database is nurtured by dozens of researchers working on sufficiency (see Toulouse et al., 2019)
This database is structured by different keywords
so that all texts with the keyword ‘definition' were screened (n = 60)
This screening added 34 articles to the sample
By combining the keyword-based search in Web of Science with a screening of the ENOUGH-Database
which are relevant to scholars in the field of sufficiency but that are not part of the Web of Science database or do not include the used key-words are still considered in the analysis
The third set of literature contains publications which were already known to the author (n = 21)
the first two sets encompassed only English literature
this third step added some German publications as well
This sample was supplemented with publications on adjacent topics
increasing the total number of publications in this article to 184
The data analysis was guided by research question A and aimed at identifying the pursued sustainability goals and a development of a typology of sufficiency concepts concerning their notions of social change
The three sets of literature were analyzed in an iterative process of induction and deduction
First insights obtained from the material were theorized in the form of a typology
which was then tested and further developed by analyzing more literature
several feedback loops with different groups of sufficiency experts were conducted to strengthen the robustness of the results
In order to operationalize the main research question and to differentiate notions of social change within the sufficiency concepts
the analysis was guided by three sub-questions
Since sufficiency is a strategy to achieve sustainability goals
an analysis of the goals of the intended social change and their specific operationalisation is one dimension to differentiate sufficiency concepts
A What are the sustainability goals that the sufficiency concept is aiming to achieve
This question is answered in the first subsection of the results
In order to analyse the process of implementing sufficiency measures and shaping social change toward sufficiency
two questions focus on the leverage points and the actors of social change:
who are seen as the central actors of change
These two questions are answered in the second subsection of the results by developing a typology of different concepts of sufficiency concerning their notions of social change
Based on the results of this analysis the research question B (specific limitations and contributions of the different concepts) is addressed at the end of each identified type of sufficiency concept
The research question C (contradictions and possible synergies among the different concepts) is tackled separately in the discussion section of this paper
To pursue social and ecological goals is not specific for sufficiency but applies for all sustainability strategies
there exist sufficiency-specific operationalisations of these goals: sufficiency as consumption corridors and sufficiency as a way into a post-growth economy
it is important to note that compliance with social foundations or ecological limits is the goal of any sustainability strategy
Sufficiency-specific goals are limits to the consumption and production of services or products
such as limits to the living space per person or the speed limit for cars
who views the economy as a subsystem of the ecological sphere and argues for a steady-state economy as a prerequisite for avoiding ecological collapse
Since sufficiency is a strategy used to attain sustainability goals, some authors argue that sufficiency is not an end in itself, but an indispensable element of effective sustainable development (Spangenberg, 2018)
limits to consumption and the creation of a post-growth economy are strategies to pursue broader sustainability goals and no end in itself
vision or a way of life also as descriptions of ends in themselves
If these limits and visions are interpreted as means or ends depends on the point of view
they can be interpreted as means to achieve sustainability goals
from a narrow perspective they can illustrate a desirable state and function as ends to guide individual or political decisions to achieve quantitative reductions in consumption and production
rebound effects of efficiency measures may be reduced and renewable energies need only provide the amount of energy
services and resources that are necessary for a decent
The following three types of concepts of sufficiency are analytically differentiated due to their (implicit) approaches to social change
The first type describes a bottom-up approach
focusing on changes in individual lifestyles
Different reasons are given for the individualization of reductions in consumption. Firstly, some authors argue for the voluntariness and individualization of sufficiency with freedom of choice (Alcott, 2008, 2010; Heindl and Kanschik, 2016)
In order not to restrict individual consumption liberties
each individual should be able to decide whether they want to choose a sufficiency-oriented or non-sufficiency-oriented lifestyle
the decision between sufficiency-oriented and a non-sufficiency-oriented consumption is left to the individuals
If one assumes that non-sufficiency decisions contribute to environmental degradation to a greater extent and thus limit the life chances of future generations
it can be argued that those individualistic sufficiency conceptions (unintentionally) place individual (consumption) freedom above questions of intergenerational justice
he recognizes that there are structural obstacles to such individual responsibility
That is why he limits the individual's moral obligation to reducing consumption to a responsible level appropriate to the circumstances and considers lobbying for political measures as the primary task of individuals rather than reducing consumption
Sufficiency concepts for businesses follow as well a radical bottom-up approach
which includes changes in individual consumer behavior
development of alternatives in societal niches and the diffusion of such practices
transformation is conceptualized as an incremental change that results primarily from a tendency to voluntarily change consumption practices
This makes transformation seem relatively free of conflicts
sufficiency research has for a long time underestimated the inertial forces of routine behavior and the scope of the social embedding of social practices
and has overestimated individuals' willingness to change behavior and the chances for a sufficiency-oriented cultural change
the orientation toward public policy measures aiming to achieve sufficiency plays a central role in the concepts summarized here
The debate about a general speed limit on German motorways
illustrates how contested sufficiency policies can be
thus raises questions of intergenerational justice above or at least to the same level as questions of individual (consumption) liberties
which clearly distinguishes these sufficiency conceptions from conceptions of the first type
research aims to provide knowledge for decision-makers and thus influence discourses
This relies primarily on the realization of the problem by decision-makers
In contrast to the first type of sufficiency concepts
those of the second type do not allocate the responsibility for change to individuals or businesses but emphasize the necessity for political change
This perspective builds on insights from social practice theory that emphasizes the embeddedness of social practices in framework conditions such as infrastructures or other institutions
unsustainable infrastructures or institutions are politicized rather than unsustainable behavior
sufficiency policy measures with a high symbolic value (such as a ban on plastic bags) or with a potential to generate economic growth (such as the support of local food production) are likely to be implemented
but not those leading to a broader reduction in consumption
This suggests that in a growth-oriented world it might be easier to add more options to choose from than to limit choices
a remaining question is how this political change could come into practice
the big question of how sufficiency policies can be implemented and which role different actors play remains for further research
Taking up the argument that it seems to be difficult to reduce consumption in a growth-oriented and capitalist society
the focus of the third type of sufficiency concepts is on the structural constitution of current capitalist consumer societies
sufficiency is conceived as a critique of capitalism and domination and as an emancipatory strategy against a society focused on acceleration
Many arguments in this type of sufficiency concepts are derived from eco-feminist and postcolonial perspectives
the restructuring of the mode of production is focused on shaping a fairer
additional core principle of liberal societies that “addresses the frame for policy making rather than the policy making itself” (p
struggles and conflicts are described as a central driver of social change
and social movements are named as central actors
Since social movements not only resist or demand but sometimes work directly on the development of alternative practices
a link to the grassroots initiatives of type one can be observed
the role of social movements in processes of implementing sufficiency policies has been seldom examined so far
One major point of critique of sufficiency concepts of the social-movement approach is that the implementation of sufficiency in this conceptualization seems quite unlikely und unclear
sufficiency approaches of any kind are still far away from being a part of mainstream political discourse on sustainability
and the overcoming of capitalist power and domination relationships and a growth logic seems even further away
it is more difficult to translate the sufficiency concepts of the social-movement approach into concrete measures and instruments
which makes direct applicability in the form of concrete political demands and decisions more difficult
This means that the scope of application for policy practice is reduced compared to concepts of the policy-making approach
One major contribution may be to offer a perspective for critical reflection on current patterns of unsustainability and planned measures
Table 1 summarizes the three different notions of social change within sufficiency concepts in an idealized and simplified way
In a nutshell: Different approaches to social change in sufficiency concepts
The literature of this study was reviewed concerning two dimensions of social change, namely the goal of and the approach to social change (Figure 2). As part of the goals of sufficiency-oriented social change, some scholars describe sufficiency itself as an end, which was also described by Jungell-Michelsson and Heikkurinen (2022)
the sustainability goals and the notions of social change were differentiated by the development of different narratives
the nexus of these two dimensions can be discussed as one part of the relationship of different sufficiency concepts to each other (research question C)
The underlying question is whether certain notions of social change are linked in the sufficiency concepts to certain sustainability goals
One can recognize that all types of notions of social change are conceptualized to attain different sustainability goals
it is not possible to link directly one notion of social change to a special characteristic of sustainability goals
the sufficiency concepts that emphasize a growth-critique are not allocated to one type of notions of social change
Nevertheless, some differentiations can be made that highlight some dominant narratives in an idealized way (Table 2)
In all types some sufficiency concepts can be found that follow social sustainability goals
but these goals are most dominant in sufficiency concepts of the social-movement approach
concepts exist that describe sufficiency as a strategy to attain ecological goals only
since sufficiency is conceptualized as a strategy to reduce externalization and discrimination
In sufficiency concepts of the bottom-up approach social aspects and a critique of an ever-growing consumption are merely addressed in the context of individual wellbeing
In concepts of the policy-making approach social limits to consumption are discussed as a (political) question of distribution
Sustainability goals and notions of social change of sufficiency concepts
The upper and lower limits to consumption as a sufficiency-specific operationalisation of social and ecological goals are mostly present in the second and the third type
Especially in the second type the goal of sufficiency policies is described as to create framework conditions that enable a descent life within the consumption corridors
questions of sufficient consumption are linked with questions of externalization and discrimination
In some concepts of the bottom-up approach
the development of generalizable individual lifestyles is pursued by an orientation of individual lifestyles toward ecological upper limits
Concerning the question of economic growth
in both the first and the second type some concepts exist that describe no conflict of sufficiency measures with economic growth and some that emphasize the necessity of an independence of societal development from economic growth
Concepts of the third type describe sufficiency as a new logic of societal and economic organization
which has significant overlaps to sufficiency
they found the call for overall governance as being dominant in the literature on the housing sector whereas behavioral change was emphasized in the literature on food and consumption (p
The question whether the concepts of the bottom-up approach or the policy-making approach dominate cannot be answered here
but the hypothesis is formulated that the discourse is moving from the first type to the second
The third type might gain attention since global social movements
put climate justice in the center of their actions and are able to influence the sustainability and sufficiency discourse on the local and the global level
The separation into three different types of approaches to social change is an analytical one
which implies that the different types overlap and are to some extent heterogeneous and contradictive in themselves
this analytical separation enables the identification of contradictions and possible synergies among the different concepts of sufficiency
Two contradictions are highlighted below: (1) different approaches to behavioral change and changes of social practices and (2) the role of conflicts in social change
First, in sufficiency concepts of the first type social theories of behavior dominate, whereas concepts of the second and the third type are linked to theories of practice. As Shove (2010) points out, these two types of social theories are based on contrasting paradigms. Whereas, theories of behavior, such as the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1985, 1991)
describe people as autonomous agents of choice and change
the theory of practice emphasizes the embeddedness of individuals and their decisions in social contexts
the focus lies on understanding and influencing attitudes that shape individual behavior
Institutional or infrastructural framework conditions that enable or hinder behavioral change are conceptualized as external to behavior
The aim of policymaking is to adjust these external factors
individuals are carriers of practices and institutions and infrastructures are not external factors but configure and structure the practices
political interventions are one part of creating new social practices
They are not limited to influencing individual behavior but may question and redesign all institutions and infrastructures
This social practices approach is dominant in the second and the third type of sufficiency concepts
which indicates that they are contradictory to the first type
The examples of different approaches to changes in behavior/practices and the role of conflicts in social change indicate that the different types of sufficiency concepts are not just different but to some extent contradictive
This implies that the choice of sufficiency concept is highly significant for the analytical perspective on social change and the practical implications for political actions
sufficiency concepts of the first type encompass a political dimension and do not merely individualize the responsibility of social change by focusing on individual lifestyles
He describes the combination of interstitial (bottom-up) and symbiotic (policy making) transformation as a “sustained metamorphosis” (p
it is possible to develop synergies among the different concepts of sufficiency and it seems plausible that no notion of social change alone is sufficient; a combination of (elements of) all three notions is necessary for sufficiency-oriented social change
To put it in an idealized and simplified way
if new sufficiency-oriented social practices are developed in societal niches by grassroots movements
infrastructures and institutions are changed by using state institutions
and social movements fight for shifting public discourse and other power relations and thereby render a deep shift toward sufficiency possible
a profound theory of how to develop a sufficiency-oriented societal change does not exist
the identification of the third type of notions of social change underlines the importance of such a broad search strategy
but not exclusively present in books or book chapters
which might have significant overlaps to concepts of sufficiency but do not or only seldom use the term “sufficiency,” might contribute valuable insights into this topic
Further research could explicitly focus on links from adjacent concepts to sufficiency–especially those from countries of the Global South–and thereby enrich the sufficiency debate
Several concepts of sufficiency problematize the role of endless economic growth
The necessary macroeconomic preconditions for and consequences of comprehensive and deep sufficiency policies have been not sufficiently investigated
different notions of social change within concepts of sufficiency were identified
In the discussion some contradictions and possible synergies were provided
the question of how to develop a sufficiency-oriented social change could benefit from a further in-depth analysis from the perspectives of transformation and social theories
a theory for sufficiency oriented social change could be developed
more empirical studies on the implementation of sufficiency policies and the way in which they enable deeper sufficiency-oriented social change is needed
More attention could be paid to the role of conflicts
since sufficiency is at odds with dominant structures of the economic system (e.g.
economic growth) and conflicts have so far played a minor role in many sufficiency concepts
sufficiency literature was reviewed concerning notions of social change
which are inherent in concepts of sufficiency
Since sufficiency is a strategy to influence social change toward sustainability
namely the goal of and the approach toward social change within sufficiency concepts
Sufficiency is thought to pursue ecological and sometimes social goals
Sufficiency as consumption corridors or sufficiency as a way to post growth economy can be described as sufficiency-specific operationalisations of social and ecological goals and are part of some of the concepts
three different types of approaches to social change were identified: the bottom-up approach
In sufficiency concepts of the bottom-up approach a reduction in consumption by changing consumer behavior
new business models and grassroots-movements is central
One major limitation to this approach lies in the individualization of responsibility for sufficiency-oriented behavior because infrastructures and institutions do not support or even hinder such behavioral change
the social embeddedness of social practices is emphasized and reductions in consumption are pursued by changes in political framework conditions
One remaining question in concepts of this approach is how these changes in political framework conditions come into place
It seems that in many concepts the decision for sufficiency policy relies more or less on the realization of the necessity to act by decision makers
This limits the potential of this approach and points to the necessity of further research
In sufficiency concepts of the social-movement approach sufficiency is conceptualized as a critical perspective on the nexus of unsustainability
and discrimination and is described as a new organizing principle for society
These concepts shed light on structures of power and domination and describe social movements as relevant subjects for transformation
as their role might be to increase counter-hegemonic power
The conceptualization of sufficiency in the social-movement approach is very broad and comparably radical
That is why an operationalization in the form of policies seems to be difficult
some possible synergies among these different approaches were identified utilizing the Multi-Level-Perspective of Sustainability Transition Research and Erik O
grassroots movements may develop new sufficiency-oriented social practices
mainstreamed and further developed by political decisions on changing infrastructures and institutions
and social movements may fight for shifting public discourse and other power relations and thereby render a deep shift toward sufficiency possible
Reflecting on possible synergies indicates how important a fruitful combination of these different approaches might be for shaping sufficiency-oriented social change
the article hopefully contributes to an elaborated debate on how sufficiency-oriented social change can be implemented
Building on the possible synergies identified above
further theoretical and empirical research on the implementation of far-reaching sufficiency policies and the role of different actors is needed
the analysis of the role of conflicts and the combination with related concepts from the Global South could be explored in further detail
A major obstacle to the implementation of far-reaching sufficiency policies might be that sufficiency is a rather radical concept
thought to aim for a major restructuring of the modes of production and consumption
such a radical approach might be necessary considering the urgency of current socio-ecological crises
and an investigation of transformation paths toward sufficiency is indispensable

guitarist Julian Lage credits his parents for his innovative approach to music
Lage spoke to WBGO's Lee Mergner during a Blue Note at Sea cruise
Wolves started promisingly under Bruno Lage
Fans had been rocked by the news that Nuno Espirito Santo was to leave Molineux after a successful four-year spell at the club
which saw Wolves gain promotion to the Premier League
finish seventh twice in the Premier League
play Europa League football and reach the semi-final of the FA Cup
The little-known Bruno Lage came in and after some initial struggles
the Portuguese managed to string some good results together
By January, Wolves were looking good and actually in competition for European football
Wolves lost five of their last seven games of the 2021/22 season
Lage would then only last until the start of October in 2022/23
But after only a couple of months in charge
he was sacked after an eight-match winless run
but the 48-year-old is now about to return to management
It is being widely reported that Lage is now set to become the new manager of Benfica
which is the club he made his name in management
Roger Schmidt was sacked as Eagles boss last week after a 1-1 draw at Moreirense
Benfica had looked a shadow of the side that won the 2022/23 Primeira Liga in Schmidt’s first season in charge
Last season Benfica finished 10 points behind champions Sporting CP and also got knocked out of the Taça de Portugal by them in the semi-finals
And they only came third in their Champions League group
Benfica reportedly consider Leonardo Jardim to be their next head coach
But Lage is now set to be unveiled for his second stint
and he will hope to be as successful as he was the first time around
Lage won the 2018/19 league title with Benfica
getting the best out of the likes of Joao Felix
Record report that Benfica’s announcement of Lage should arrive soon
So Lage will get another crack at management with Benfica and this is a good chance for him to restore his reputation
which has taken a hit after his stints with Wolves and Benfica
Things went pretty badly for Lage at Wolves towards the end
He did pull off some really good results during his time at Molineux
His brilliant 1-0 tactical victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in January 2022 was a result to remember
with the club having not won there for 40 years
But Lage struggled for a couple of reasons at Wolves. Reportedly, he was not the warmest character and when things got difficult at the end, some players were said to have checked out and did not like his methods
Lage had also said several times that he needed reinforcements
which has been a running theme for Wolves managers under Fosun
There was potential there with him but it just didn’t work out in the end
But he now has the chance to do good things at a huge club and many Wolves fans will wish him well
Benfica boss Bruno Lage is expecting another “great game” with Barcelona
with the two teams set to meet in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday
Barca beat Benfica 5-4 in the group stages and Lage told his pre-match press conference another classic could be on the cards
“I can’t predict how many goals will be scored in the match
but I can predict a great game of football because there are two teams that have their sights set on attacking,” he told reporters
Lage also said he was planning a similar approach to the previous game and is expecting his team to create chances
the strategy we will implement is the one we feel will be the best,” he added
but we also look at the positive things we did against this opponent
the number of times we were in front of the goalkeeper
“We looked at our opponents and tried to find the spaces they offered us
As much as I would like to talk to you and go into more detail about your issue
“Maybe at the end of the game we can talk a little
But we have to know how to take advantage of the spaces that Barcelona will give us
but before we can answer it here we have to answer it on the pitch.”
The winners of the last 16 tie between the two sides will go on to play either Dortmund or Lille in the quarter-finals of the competition
Benfica manager Bruno Lage has shared his thoughts on Tuesday’s Champions League tie as he prepares to come up against Barcelona once more in the competition
Barcelona head into the match in the driving seat after securing a 1-0 win in Portugal last week but have seen their preparations for the match overshadowed by the tragic death of team doctor Dr Carles Minarro Garcia on Saturday
Lage is well aware that the sad circumstances mean it’s going to be a tough evening for his opponents at Montjuic
“I’m so sorry about the death of the Barcelona doctor
I think they want to dedicate a victory to someone so close to them
but we also have important things to do,” he told a pre-match press conference
“We have a 37-year-old player who stayed at home and still has a record to beat in the Champions League
We have an important competition for its prestige
We have our reasons to be motivated and confident.”
Lage also praised Hansi Flick for the job he’s done since arriving in the summer but is still optimistic his team can get a result
“We have to understand that Barcelona are a great team
although the one who stood out in the last game was the goalkeeper,” he added
in 2025 they are the only team in Europe that has not lost yet
We always created many goal-scoring opportunities and we feel that the results could have been different
When the moment comes and when the game comes
we have to understand very well how we can continue the two games we played.”
The winners of the tie will progress to a quarter-final clash with either Dortmund or Lille
That tie is locked at 1-1 after the first leg in Germany
Wolves were in a world of trouble at the back end of 2024
Gary O’Neil had just been sacked for overseeing a terrible run of results
and there was a real disciplinary issue within a frustrated and emotional squad
It was by no means an easy job to walk into
and has been a revelation – totally transforming the picture
Pereira has overseen a win of six straight wins in the Premier League
The last time Wolves went on such a run in the top-flight was 1970
It was an amazing April to say the least and now
Pereira stands a golden chance to do something that’s quite rare for a Wolves manager
Wolves won all five of their games in April
It started with a 1-0 win over West Ham United at Molineux
edged Manchester United and then disposed of Leicester City
No Wolves fan would have foreseen this kind of form a few months ago
But Pereira is doing something special at Molineux
and excitement is growing regarding the future under this manager
And as a result of Pereira’s brilliance in recent weeks
he surely now stands a golden chance of being named the Premier League Manager of the Month for April
Bruno Lage was the last Wolves manager to win the award
He won three out of three games that month against Brentford
and that win over United was Wolves’ first victory at Old Trafford since 1980
it’d be just the fifth Premier League award presented to a Wolves manager
It would be an absolute shock if Pereira did not win the Premier League Manager of the Month award for April after winning five out of five
Wolves have been the best team in the league and he will hopefully be acknowledged with the award
And that would only strengthen Pereira’s hand further at Wolves
It’s very possible he could use that as leverage to get himself a new and improved contract. Pereira has already admitted he’d be open to signing a new contract
It would be ideal, because it puts pressure on Fosun to ensure that Pereira is backed
And backing this manager feels like it could help the club bring back the good times
The virtuoso guitarist explains his approach to music theory and the wider scope a little knowledge can bring
“I find great support in knowing that I'm far from the only person doing this
“I [ultimately] wanted to be part of a creative project
and in order to do that and feel comfortable
I needed to deal with a lot of things that are really no one else's business
that's theory and that's understanding guitar.”
Lage, whose recent twelfth album Speak to Me was met with wide acclaim from critics
went into greater detail on how his abilities developed from amateur player to virtuoso
“[It comes down to] even knowing where the pitches are on the instrument - I've always felt like that's massively overlooked,” Julian said
is there are so many hurdles as guitar players we get into (I was there for a long time) that are attributed to [only] knowing 30% of the neck
That's a very simple example of kind of doing your homework
Julian, who once played on-stage with Carlos Santana at age 9
then went on to underline a method for dealing with progressively harder elements of learning guitar theory
thinking ‘despite all the things I know that I don't know - what is something I can do that I just feel I could do in my sleep
A really good example would be probably playing a C Major chord
The reason I say that is because I probably learned it really early on
That's a metric for what it's like to have a mastery over a little domain on the instrument.”
Lage explained that he’d progress to trying something a little less comfortable
and try to get into a zone where he felt more relaxed playing complicated parts
“I’d immediately ask ‘what has left me?’ - I can’t really breathe when I’m doing [this]
I would keep going back to the reset (that safe C Major chord)
and I would keep going back to that touchstone
you can get those difficult things to feel good in a way I had faith in
It’s very hard to have faith that you’re good at something if you’re not used to that ‘good’ feeling.”
Lage credited his father with teaching him this relaxed way in to learning theory
“I think that's how my father looked at teaching me guitar
"There’s plenty for us guitarists to learn – and ‘less is more’ is the overriding lesson": how to play like George Harrison on The Beatles' Abbey Road

Northern Shuffle is one of the standout tracks from Lage's 2024 studio album
Northern Shuffle should come with a warning that it’ll be in both head and body for days
and it’s a track that remarkably started out as a solo study for guitar before becoming lead instrument in a full six-piece ensemble
Speaking to MusicRadar in March
Lage said Northern Shuffle evolved of an long-held obsession with the history of the shuffle
how it was articulated on drums and in on guitar
“Shuffles sound different played by different people,” said Lage
“I think the shuffles I am most obsessed with are what you hear with T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters
Dun-dah-dun-dah / dun-dah-dun… Whatever that is – and it is different for everybody – it is no way shape or form meant as trying to replicate [something] but finding your own personal shuffle because people feel that very idiosyncratically.”
Throughout the writing process for Speak To Me
which took place while Lage was on tour with his trio
one of the through lines was that they needed a groove
“I wish you could hear the original because it is really a solo guitar piece
“There are kind of two songs happening at once
this irrational melody that has its own tempo
That’s how I thought of it.”
That was in March. Just last week, in lieu of this video dropping, Lage did share a video of Northern Shuffle on solo guitar, all performed on his Collings acoustic guitar
footage that serves to highlight just how physical it is to wrangle these sounds from the instrument.
finds Lage backed by his regular trio collaborators Dave King on drums and Jorge Roeder on double bass
A post shared by Julian Lage (@jlage)
it was a vintage Epiphone Coronet that he borrowed for the session that we’re hearing
Lage says he was “lost” trying to get to grips with an unfamiliar guitar in an unfamiliar tuning
which when you consider how tricksy that rhythm part is
feels like an appropriate choice of instrument on a track that Lage says is the “physical heartbeat” of the record
It’s a little bit of rubbing your stomach and patting your head
where you go between the shuffle and the free melody shuffle
“It’s a little bit of rubbing your stomach and patting your head
and then at the V chord they converge for the grand finale
I’d say that tune represents the rhythmic and kind of physical heartbeat of the record
and developed from this three-way fascination
Then you bring in the full band and it just sort of erupts.”
Jonathan HorsleyJonathan Horsley has been writing about guitars and guitar culture since 2005
and shamefully still struggles with rhythm figure one of Van Halen’s Panama
