BOZEMAN — If you live around the 9th Avenue and Lamme Street area in Bozeman, then you probably had an eventful Tuesday night. The streets were flooded with police cars and SWAT teams in attempts to detain a man who had barricaded himself in a house with a rifle
A lot of yelling in the background and all that,” says Hannah Cantú
who lives down the street from the scene where tire marks are still fresh in the yard from law enforcement
Woke up around midnight to probably a flashbang and some major sounds of yelling and evacuation and stuff like that,” Hannah told me
witnesses around Lamme observed a man retrieving an AR-style rifle from his vehicle during a heated argument over parking
Concerned neighbors immediately contacted law enforcement but when they arrived
was back in his residence off 9th and Lamme
“When we get information that there’s a weapon involved and we have information to believe somebody may be barricaded inside of a residence
It really then kind of escalates our response,” says Bozeman Police Patrol Captain Hal Richardson
He told me police were able to safely evacuate those in the residence not involved in the standoff and put the surrounding residents in a shelter in place
and with us bringing a special response team in
we just don't want someone to be injured if it did turn violent,” says Richardson
Gomez was uncompliant and refused to leave
That's when Bozeman Police activated their City-County Joint Special Response Team
We go through a whole bunch of stuff to get them out,” says Richardson
Eyewitnesses say they also used what sounded like flashbangs
You could also see the windows on the residence were shattered—procedures that kept those in the area up all night long
Please come out with your arms up and no guns,’ and all that kind of stuff,” says Hannah
Gomez was still barricaded in the residence
The Lewis and Clark County and Helena Police SWAT team was called to the scene
The incident was finally resolved around 7 a.m
“The individual was taken into custody peacefully
It’s to resolve these peacefully,” says Richardson
Gomez has been charged with four felony counts of Assault With Weapon
the police department doesn’t see these long standoff situations often
But they do have the resources for when they do occur
who’s lived in the Lamme and 9th area for years
tells me it was impressive to see those resources in action
“They did a great job of handling it as far as I could tell," she says
"There have been little incidents over the years and stuff like that
but never anything with this heavy of a presence."

The man arrested after a standoff at a residence in the 900 block of West Lamme Street Saturday night appeared in Gallatin County Justice Court on Tuesday
Court documents identified the man as 31-year-old Shawn Steinmetz of Bozeman
Steinmetz is accused of threatening a 16-year-old girl he believed had stolen marijuana from him with a handgun around 5:49 p.m
the girl and Steinmetz had been "hanging out" at the West Lamme Street residence
Steinmetz allegedly provided the girl with marijuana and told her she could take some as she was leaving the residence
The girl told police she took "three nuggets" of marijuana
then gave them back and left when Steinmetz became enraged
Steinmetz followed the girl for 1.5 blocks before catching up to her and grabbing her from behind
He allegedly pinned her against a vehicle with his left arm while holding a pistol in his right hand
The girl told police Steinmetz was yelling at her to give him her phone and purse
Steinmetz reportedly left the scene after a witness intervened
The witness told police he saw Steinmetz holding the handgun as he walked away
the girl told officers she believed she was in danger of being seriously injured or killed
Steinmetz was located at the West Lamme residence
Court documents say Steinmetz barricaded himself inside and refused to surrender for several hours before eventually exiting the residence
He was placed under arrest and taken to the Gallatin County Detention Center
The reporting detective said he located Steinmetz's handgun at the residence after attaining a search warrant
Court documents say Steinmetz was uncooperative at the detention center and asked the detective how he could be charged with robbery when he was protecting his property
His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov

Bertha Lamme became the country’s first female engineer when she took a job at Westinghouse Electric Corporation
Lamme grew up on a farm in Springfield, Ohio in 1869. She attended public school and, according to Senator John Heinz History Center Chief Historian Anne Madarasz
At the time, engineering was an industry reserved for men. For women to even consider studying mathematics or machines at college was inconceivable. Troy Eller English, Society of Women Engineers archivist
said some scholars maintained that if women entered higher education
“[They said women’s] reproductive and mental health would be irreparably harmed,” English said
land grant universities like OSU and Michigan State were more progressive and less likely to exclude women from entering traditional STEM fields
So Bertha Lamme followed in her brother’s footsteps
She studied mechanical engineering with a specialty in a new field called electrical engineering
even the schools that accepted women rarely accommodate the needs of their female students
so students often had to find off-campus housing
English said Lamme and a few peers lived together in the home of the sister of an OSU professor
very few women had engineering degrees because the system made it nearly impossible for them to,” English said
“But she’d watched her brother succeed in engineering
English said she was a member of the Browning Literary Society
the Ohio State Lantern student newspaper mentioned her appearance at the commencement ceremony: “One of those who stepped forward to receive this degree of mechanical engineering in electrical engineering was a sweet girl graduate
spontaneous applause broke over the crowd.”
called “An Analysis of Tests of a Westinghouse Railway Generator,” caught the attention of the Pittsburgh-based engineering company
Lamme was hired a few months after her graduation
Her degree was in mechanical engineering because OSU didn't have an electrical engineering degree
Historian Anne Madarasz said while there Lamme would have worked on some of the bigger transportation systems projects
Her brother was notable for designing the giant generators at Niagara Falls
“She’s in a place where there’s major innovation and change happening
new ideas that are going to impact the world,” Madarasz said
Madarasz said she would have had an understanding of the “evolving theory of electricity,” as the technology was changing every day
but as progressive as Westinghouse was at the time for employing a woman
it was still standard for ladies to retire when they married
Women in the field aren’t as rare an occurrence these days, but less than a quarter of all engineering degrees are earned by women
Madarasz said there’s still a ways to go to achieve equality within the field
“But I think she is a shining example of setting out on a path that few
Lamme died in 1943 and is buried in Homewood Cemetery

7:10 AM — The Bozeman Police Department said on social media the man who had barricaded himself with a rifle inside a Bozeman residence is in custody and there is no active threat

6:45 AM — The Bozeman Police Department says roads around 9th and Lamme remain closed; 11th Avenue is open
and bus transfers for BSD7 schools will operate on their normal schedule
The police department says schools will open at their usual times
and there will be an increased police presence around Bozeman High School
The school district will be in further contact with parents via email
BOZEMAN — Law enforcement has been involved in a standoff with an armed man in the area of 9th and Lamme in Bozeman since around 11 p.m
the Bozeman Police Department says the scene is still active and a shelter-in-place order is in effect for residents within a block of the scene
police said a man with a rifle had barricaded himself in the residence
and those closest to the scene had been evacuated
The Lewis and Clark County/Helena PD SWAT team is on scene Wednesday morning for additional support
The residents under the shelter-in-place were notified via a reverse 911 call last night; they are asked to avoid windows until further notice
No further details are currently available
A little over a month ago, I told you about a standoff that happened in a house on the corner of 9th Avenue and West Lamme Street. This past weekend, yet another standoff happened in the exact same house
a 12-hour standoff happened at the residence
33-year-old Seth Ryan Gomez had gotten into a heated argument over parking and threatened neighbors with an AR-style rifle
The Special Response Team and a SWAT team out of Helena were all called to the scene
They spent several hours using tactics to have Gomez surrender
charged with four felony counts of assault with a weapon
But Gomez is no longer being held at the Gallatin County Detention Center
WATCH PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Standoff eyewitnesses describe 'wild night' of police activity (Sept
court documents state another standoff happened at the same house
Police reportedly responded to a disturbance call
Steinmetz had reportedly been hanging out with a 16-year-old girl
he thought she stole marijuana and followed her down the street
Pinning her against a car and waving a pistol around
After several hours and the use of flash bangs
police say Steinmetz surrendered and was taken into custody
He faced a judge Tuesday morning and his bail is set at $20,000
I was curious if this is something Bozeman Police are seeing more often
so I spoke to Bozeman Police Chief Jim Veltkamp
“I can think of times in the past when we’ve had a specific residence
that we end up responding to calls repeatedly to,” says Veltkamp
9th and Lamme now making its way onto that list
But how often are these standoff situations happening
“We’ve slowly seen the number of special response team callouts increase
We’re certainly seeing the types of crime change
We’re having crimes involving more violence and more felonies
end up as a special response team call out,” says Veltkamp
Veltkamp tells me Bozeman Police appreciates the patience of the community as these types of calls increase
they’re using every resource necessary to resolve situations peacefully
BOZEMAN — The Bozeman Police Department has released more details of an overnight armed standoff that ended with the suspect's arrest Wednesday morning
Bozeman PD said in a press release that officers responded to reports of a man brandishing a firearm on West Lamme Street shortly after 5 p.m
Witnesses said they saw the suspect take an AR-style rifle from his vehicle during an argument over parking
witnesses said Gomez became increasingly confrontational during the argument
Officers issued an "Attempt to Locate" after confirming Gomez was not at his residence
The release says that shortly after 9 p.m.
officers were informed that Gomez was back at his residence in the 900 block of West Lamme Street
Bozeman Police and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team established a perimeter around Gomez's residence
A SWAT team out of Helena was also called in to assist
Gomez was repeatedly given instructions to surrender throughout the standoff as it continued into Wednesday morning
The release says officers eventually deployed tear gas and took Gomez into custody shortly after 7 a.m
Gomez faces four felony counts of assault with a weapon
He is being held without bond at the Gallatin County Detention Center pending a court appearance
Bozeman PD said no injuries were reported due to the incident and extended thanks to the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office
and the joint Helena Police Department and Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team for their assistance
And that is the operative word: beauty. Lamme, who is the design consultant for Tribe Design Group, the Austin-based design firm she co-founded with Brooke Wilbratte
from hearty concrete and brass to open shelving
that exudes grace while working overtime to serve
After poring over every crevice of this kitchen
we caught up with Lamme to ask about the smartest design decisions she and Wilbratte made that resulted in this stunning and smart kitchen.
We wanted a giant island to seat our entire family or a group of kids when they are here
We knew we wanted a large island as the center of the kitchen
so we designed the island first and worked the rest of the kitchen around it
and sink all in convenient locations from one another
When cooking on the stovetop we designed cubbies on either side so we could keep our favorite oils
We installed the pot filler for functionality so we wouldn’t have to carry around our big pot across the kitchen to the sink
These are all rift-sewn with a vertical grain
It makes the cabinet feel modern and not rustic
The stain is also important because a white oak can turn yellow quickly
Our family lives hard in our home and I wanted to use a material for the floor that would be super durable
and the kids can come in and out of the pool dripping wet without any worries
A lot of people can’t deal with marble in a kitchen
We just decided to live and cook freely in it and let the stress of the etching go
I’m the girl who can spend hours at the slab showroom
I’m obsessed with all different types of gorgeous slabs that Mother Nature creates
It feels authentic to have a natural slab in my home.
The fixtures and lighting are burnished brass
While our business is moving away from burnished brass and toward gunmetal finishes
I still love burnished or unlacquered brass
An unlacquered brass ages over time and brings a space extra character
Our ceilings are twelve feet high and the island is twelve feet long, so the typical two to three pendants above an island wasn’t the right choice. We designed a custom light fixture with Apparatus Studio so it would fit the island
take up that vast space and give the kitchen a wow factor
Lighting should be the crown jewel of the kitchen
Keep the rest of the kitchen clean and minimal
It’s the one room of the house that gets the most use by your family and friends
We live a very active lifestyle. Our family is constantly on the go, so when we come home we don’t like to be overstimulated with a bunch of colors or patterns. At heart, I’m a pretty simple person and I feel like the neutral palette reflects who I am. We used Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee—a go-to color.
remove the upper cabinets and put in open shelving
If you can’t stand to live without your uppers
make sure they go all the way to the top of the ceiling
We prefer smart storage to conceal as much as possible
we used floor-to-ceiling cabinet doors with pull-out shelves to conceal blenders
and other everyday items already plugged in and ready to use
we store plates and utensils in the island drawers close to the refrigerator
We added an adjacent pantry and a storage wall to make up for lost storage space
We keep entertaining essentials like platters
The butler’s pantry off the kitchen is one of my favorite spots in the house
My favorite thing about our kitchen is the amount of time I spend in there connecting with my family and friends
From doing homework on the island to hosting parties
It’s not necessarily the things in the kitchen that I’m attached to but the memories the kitchen affords me to make
May I ask what stain you used for the white oak
We are considering using white oak as well for our kitchen cabinets but are indecisive about the stain
We started with an excellent view of our backyard
Nice big windows and good airflow that helps keep the kitchen cool
A four burner gas stovetop is exactly what we need in a small kitchen
self-closing drawers for cutlery is very handy

This article is part of the Research TopicOn the Relationship Between Consciousness and High-Level Cognitive FunctionsView all 5 articles
Visual functions are reviewed that coincide with conscious as opposed to unconscious vision
and some aspects of visual inference occur during full and subjective invisibility
Functions related to perceptual organization
such as grouping and figure-ground segregation
occur during inattention as well as full visibility
It is argued that perceptual organization is the function that is central to understanding the transition from unconscious to conscious seeing
It is discussed what this implies for theories of consciousness such as Recurrent Processing Theory
What does it mean to consciously see or not see
who insists that he was seeing that face and can describe all sorts of features
Then it will be safe to assume there was a conscious sensation of that stimulus
suppose someone is shown visual stimuli (or blanks) that are strongly masked
while all attention is focused on the screen
and the only task is to press one button when seen
If the subject then insists not having seen anything at any trial
which is confirmed by d-prime being 0 (and sufficient trials were recorded to reliably estimate that)
it will be safe to assume that there was no conscious sensation of the stimuli
This is generally considered “objective invisibility,” the level at which conscious sensations are trusted to be absent
implying that subjective invisibility may happen for stimuli that are objectively detectable
From this, we arrive at three stages of visual processing (Figure 1A):
stimuli that are below the threshold for objective visibility
stimuli that are reported as unseen in experiments using perceptual awareness scales
yet are above the threshold for objective invisibility
Visual operations during stages of unconscious to conscious and attentive (visual) processing
(A) Depending on stimulus manipulations like masking
Shown are the different thresholds for conscious visibility
depending on the method used to “ask” subjects whether the stimulus was seen or not
stimuli may become consciously accessed and reported or not
There is typically a capacity limit for how much can be attended
(C) Table showing which of three categories of visual functions are or are not executed during the different stages of unconscious/conscious/unattended/attended vision
A red box indicates that the functions are not executed
yellow that there are mixed results or that some functions in this category are executed while others are not
On another dimension are phenomena of “unconscious” vision that relate to attention
Well-known are the change blindness (CB) or innatentional blindness (IB) demonstrations where huge changes between scenes are not seen
Often used is the attentional blink (AB) paradigm
where the reporting of a first target renders a shortly following second target “invisible.”
A separate distinction thus is between (Figure 1B):
stimuli that are reported as not seen while attention is diverted away from them (as in CB
A potential “hierarchy” of visual phenomenology thus may be (above levels in parentheses)
Stage 3: Unattended (but otherwise subjectively visible) (4)
Stage 4: Subjectively visible and attended (3/5)
An alternative is to view the two types of manipulations of conscious vision – those manipulating visibility and those manipulating attention- as orthogonal [as I and others have done before (Lamme, 2003, 2004; Dehaene et al., 2006)]
it is irrelevant for the discussion below (about which visual functions operate under the four levels) whether the four levels are orthogonal or hierarchical
I will refrain from any reiteration of these debates and simply try to link each level to various functions
Manipulations like backward or dichoptic masking
or conditions like blindsight render stimuli stage 1 when d-prime is really 0 (which is not often achieved)
or attentional deficits like neglect speak only to the transition between stages 3 and 4 (see above for the underlying reasoning)
These are all functions that come with the “definition” of conscious perception that is used
and a discussion of their role in consciousness amounts to nothing more than a reiteration of the stalemate previously mentioned (although interesting observations about the relation between attention
suggesting they are generated partly unconsciously
In sum, it seems that the visual processes of interference and inference, where local features start to interact and put into global perceptual context (e.g., wavelength being converted to color, contours to surfaces, etc.) find their basis in stage 2, and may even operate to completion during this stage. Some have called this stage the formation of the 2.5D sketch (Nakayama and Shimojo, 1992)
going from features to surfaces and their relative positions

Attention has well-documented effects on visual processing
but does not seem to affect whether particular visual functions are executed or not
you cannot un-see a visual illusion by knowing it is an illusion
finding the NCC is ultimately aimed at unraveling the set of neural operations (hence functions) that “generate” the conscious (visual) percept
this is framed as operations being both necessary and sufficient for consciousness
What mostly occurs is that some correlation is found between conditions or manipulations that affect conscious experience on the one hand
and neural signals and their associated processes on the other hand
some visual functions can be excluded from the NCC in this correlational sense: feature extraction
some interference and inference occur regardless of whether one is conscious of the visual stimulus or not
Other functions are likely candidates: some inference and integration (like in the Kanizsa illusion)
perceptual organization and figure-ground segregation depend strongly on the stimulus that is evoking these operations being consciously perceived
I have a hard time seeing the explanatory power of these functions toward understanding seeing (as opposed to knowing
also this aspect of consciousness seems quite distant from explaining the unconscious to conscious transition that is dealt with here
as both unconscious and conscious vision share the same “I,” being either aware of an object or not
the transition from unconscious to conscious vision
is probably best explained by visual processing going from (low and high level) feature extraction toward integrating those features into a coherent and integrated whole
thereby constituting the organized and unitary percept that sits so prominently in the mind of the visual animal we are

and a Cumberland Farms truck carrying 12,000 gallons of gasoline had crashed into a guardrail on the hairpin turn outside the Golden Eagle gift shop and restaurant on the Mohawk Trail

The former Fremont High School and University of Nebraska-Lincoln track standout died unexpectedly in April 2013
He is once again being honored during the fourth annual Alex Lamme St
Patrick’s Day Dash being held March 17 at the Christensen Family YMCA Camp
While Alex Lamme is no longer with the people who love him
his memory and legacy lives on through an annual road race commemorating his life
a 1993 graduate of Fremont High School and a 1997 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
is being honored during the third annual Alex Lamme St
Patrick’s Day Dash – a 5K run and one-mile family walk being held at 11 a.m
March 18 at the Christensen Family YMCA Camp
Registration costs $25 prior to March 10 and includes a complementary long-sleeve T-shirt
Anybody registering after March 10 will be required to pay $30 and there will be no T-shirt guarantees at that point
information released by the Fremont Family YMCA says
The 5K run is being divided into eight age-based categories
and the top male and female finisher from each division will be awarded a prize
People are encouraged to register at the Fremont Family YMCA’s front desk, online at www.register.chronotrack.com/r/26942, through the special events page at www.fremontfamilyymca.org or by mailing cash or checks to the Y, 810 N. Lincoln Ave. Checks should be made payable to the Fremont Family YMCA.
In addition, people are being asked to wear green “Irish” garb and are encouraged to stay after the race for food and refreshments.
In 1997, Alex Lamme and his wife, Janae Lamme, moved to Virginia two weeks after being married where Alex studied at the University of Virginia Law School. Alex and Janae became parents in the early 2000s when Janae gave birth to their son Nick, followed by daughters Alex, Ava and Laney.
Alex tragically died unexpectedly in April 2013 while on a business trip in Chicago, and that same year, he was recognized through a road race in Virginia held by family and friends because of his love for running.
Alex was not only a standout runner during his time at Fremont High School, but also at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he ran a leg of a distance medley relay at the 1996 NCAA Indoor Track Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He became a national champion and fist team All-American in the process, his father, Nick Lamme, said during a 2016 interview with Tribune correspondent Chris Legband.
The event, of course, is a great way for the Fremont community to celebrate Alex’s life and passion for running, however, funds gathered from the dash and family walk serve a vital purpose of their own, too.
Proceeds once again will go toward the Alex Lamme Award for UNL track athletes, FHS boy and/or girl track and/or basketball scholarship, scholarships for Alex’s four minor children as well as providing funding for youth programs at the Y.
For more information, people are encouraged to contact the Fremont Family YMCA at 402-721-6952.

RADAR#TBT: In its 137 years serving Austin
Lammes Candies prepares for Valentine's Day rushby John-Carlos Estrada
Texas — With days to go until Valentine’s Day
Austin's oldest candy shop is buzzing with action
It is a lot of work," said Lammes Candies President Pam Teich
don't be surprised to see Teich behind the candy cases doling out sweet treats
"It's a tradition," explained Teich
"And typically the 13th and 14th are two of the busiest volume days within our stores."
For Teich, candy runs in her family. She's the fifth-generation co-owner of Lammes Candies since 1885
"We built the manufacturing facility that you're standing in," said Teich about their Airport Boulevard location in Central Austin
The origin of the candy shop isn't so sweet
"The business was lost in poker and bought back by our founder,David Turner Lamme
Sr.," said store manager Sarah Schiff
"You've gotta keep in mind this was about three years before the state Capitol went up in downtown," said Schiff
"They started with a traditional kind of penny candy."
Within seven years, their penny candy turned into gold when Lamme created the Texas Chewie Pecan Praline
nobody makes a praline like we do," said Teich
"That's what got us on the map because families could send it to soldiers and confidently knowing that it's gonna arrive in good condition."
The ingredients are still the same: pecans
pecans from the trees along the Colorado River in Austin were used to produce the praline -- Lammes continues to follow this tradition today
From the pandemic to now the serious supply chain issues
"It's been difficult on several levels," said Teich
"We were outta cellophane for eight weeks
We could not make one of our premium products
Austin's oldest candy shop keeps serving up delicious treats for Austinites
I think shows how well it goes together with the Austin city vibe," said Schiff

Both Lamme and Olex received dogs last September from the Ventura County chapter of Pets for Vets
The organization rescues dogs from shelters and trains them to help veterans

A fundraiser for the group is set for Thursday

They were deployed to Afghanistan at different times and reconnected at Olex’s birthday and welcome home party in 2016
They decided to become roommates last year

Olex had spotted the organization at a college fair on the Moorpark College campus while he was taking an extra credit class
the director of training for Military Animal Project and a veteran himself
Olex recalls that as soon as he encountered Horrell and the dog
and I knew I needed something to keep my mind busy all the time,” Olex said
Lamme remembered how calming a dog overseas was
“While everything was blowing up around us and everything was going to hell
loving dog that didn’t really care or judge you for the things you had done,” Lamme said
Veteran health: Plans unveiled for expanded Ventura County VA clinic
Olex got together with trainers Laurette Chapman and Horrell and explained he needed a dog that would enjoy hikes
He had returned stateside with great difficulty being alone
Horrell said he knew Duke had the temperament to help Lamme with his nightmares
Chapman said it takes six to eight weeks on average to train the shelter dogs
This situation was unique in that the two dogs had to train together
Chapman and Horrell got together once a week with the dogs
the vets do not meet the dog until we are ready to turn them over,” Chapman explained
it was different because I had to work with Bob to make sure everyone would get along
They actually did meet the dogs before the turnover because of that scenario
we had to make sure all things were covered.”
the vets are instructed to wear a T-shirt throughout the day
“The last two weeks you put it in the bed at night so when the dog meets the veteran
I know you,’” Horrell explained
and it immediately helps with the bonding.”
Olex said the connection with Kaia was not immediate
“Meeting people for the first time I’m reserved and very quiet,” Olex admitted
The dogs were already playing in the backyard and I got off work
‘Who’s this guy?’ She would come over
walk away and her eyes were studying me and trying to learn me
The turning point for them was when he put Kaia in the bed of his truck to go on a hunting trip and she put her paws on his shoulders and pulled him in for a hug
the relationship took a turn,” Olex said
Chapman believes the organization saves lives — of both the dog and the combat veteran
“We make a lifetime match for the dog and the veteran,” Horrell said
“If something happens to the veteran
If something happens to the dog — say he gets cancer — we’ll get the veteran another dog if they want it
the dog has been a vital addition to his life

A Waynesville man was taken by helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries after a motorcycle crash in Pulaski County Tuesday night
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report
two miles west of Waynesville when he lost control and overturned the Honda MSX125 he was riding
Vernon Lamme didn’t quite seem the type to be an archaeologist
With his prominent chin and substantial waist
world-traveling Indiana Jones nor a meticulous
He sometimes like to play the part of the adventurer—in pictures from the 1940s
when he was excavating burial sites at the aquatic theme park Marineland
he’s wearing a pith helmet—but his territory was Florida
the governor appointed him State Archaeologist
the first in Florida and one of the first anywhere in the country
“He was known among archaeologists as being a shady
an archaeologist who’s researched and written about Lamme’s life and career
“But maybe not as smart as that.”
most states have an official State Archaeologist
The position began as more of an honorary role
but after Congress passed the Historical Preservation Act in 1964
new state historic preservation offices started hiring archaeologists to review development projects and help protect valuable archaeological sites
“Just like we protect the birds and bees with environmental laws
we protect cultural resources,” says Nicholas Bellatoni
Emeritus State Archaeologist in Connecticut and past president of the National Association of State Archaeologists
If state archaeologists identify archaeological sites that are potentially significant
they might recommend a development be paused while a survey is conducted
“Any state archaeologist is used to controversy,” says Bellatoni
But not the type of controversy that Lamme incited
he lasted just six months—and his scandals included getting hordes of teenagers drunk
to stake a homesteading claim on Merritt Island
a long strip of land off the state’s eastern coast
It was a rough set up: most of the houses were simple shacks
“excellent wine made from grapefruit juice.”
and then moving to Naples to start the Transcript
the senator from Key West promised to find him a job
and he began working for the state government as a “verifier in the Enrolling Room,” where he made sure bills passed by the state senate were in the right form when they went to the governor for a signature
But he also continued submitting stories to newspapers in Key West and Fort Myers
he had become legislative secretary to the same senator who had originally lured him to the capital. It was from this position that he launched himself as state archaeologist
He wrote the bill that created the position and
convinced the governor to appoint him to the office
though he had no training and little experience as an archaeologist
There was little professional archaeological work being done in Florida
and enthusiastic amateurs could finagle their way into digs or make their own contributions
the state was about to experience a small boom in archaeological work
As part of the New Deal, the Civil Works Administration was launching large archaeology projects, under the supervision of the Smithsonian, in “states with mild climates and large numbers of unemployed workers,” as Edwin Lyon puts it in A New Deal for Southeastern Archaeology
Whatever artifacts were found would be split between the state and federal governments
As the newly appointed State Archaeologist
Lamme would be in charge of the state’s side
“Because he was called the state archaeologist
he was supposedly involved in all these projects,” says Mitchem
“Some of the other people involved in these projects
trained people couldn’t stand him.”
The problems began quickly, as Mitchem discovered while researching Lamme’s life
The digs that Lamme was overseeing kept shoddy records
so that archaeologists looking at the reports he wrote can find little to elucidate what was actually found
Lamme “bought moon-shine whiskey and lemons and succeeded in getting the crowd drunk,” reported one of his enemies
an employee of the Florida Geological Survey and an actual archaeologist
Some of Lamme’s young employees had “never drank whiskey before in their lives,” Simpson wrote
“I feel sure that every resident of the town will recall very clearly the shameful incidents which followed.” Lamme also took the government trucks provided for the work and rented them out for $8 a day
some of the best artifacts from the dig disappeared
“Lamme was good friends with a major collector in Miami,” says Mitchem
“Apparently he was letting this guy take some of the cream of the crop stuff that they were finding.”
these transgressions lost Lamme his new position
this was not the end of Lamme’s archaeological career
He convinced a new governor to reinstate him as state archaeologist in 1937
only to resign a few months later to begin a different government job
a SeaWorld-like park that focused on dolphins
he started excavating mounds built by Native Americans and in 1940
he got himself reappointed as State Archaeologist yet again
he was also elected Alderman for Marineland
and his need to make a buck finally came together
he convinced the owners of Marine Studios to make him and the excavations part of the attraction itself,” writes Mitchem
“This indeed proved popular.” Visitors to Marineland could pay 25 extra cents to view the mounds
and eventually the Seminole family Lamme convinced to live on site
He never stopped thinking about archaeology
Florida Lore Not Found in the History Books!
he’s still trying to advance a pet theory
that Florida was once occupied by the Maya people
I had the opportunity to tramp over every deer trail and cowpath in the every county of the state – and the more Indian mounds I studied the more firm was my belief that the Mayas once roamed these trails,” he wrote
But that never concerned Lamme: he made the world what he wanted it to be

Fifth generation of Lamme family—home of the famous pecan praline—continues candy business that started in 1878
The fifth generation of the Lamme family continues to churn out candies
The minute Pam Teich walked into the office
she knew the situation was worse than she’d imagined
and the deadline for shipping candy to one of Austin-based Lammes Candies’ best customers was the end of the week
when she thought it might be more fun doing anything besides helping run her family’s 134-year-old business
it’s just another surprise to throw you off your game
you take a deep breath and figure out what you need to do
there are very few things that creep up on you that you can’t handle.”
most famous for its Texas Chewie Pecan Pralines
has been making candy of one kind or another since long before cars traveled Congress Avenue
brother Bryan David Teich and sister Lana Schmidt are the fifth generation of Lammes to run the family-owned business—a rare feat
“The one time we didn’t order Lammes
‘Where’s my candy?’ ” says Charlotte Plumlee
whose Austin-area oilfield services company
sends 450 boxes of pralines to customers and employees every Christmas
and the people I deal with are very nice.”
Mention Lammes to Texans of a certain age and their reaction is usually the same: That’s the pecan praline candy company
But Lammes was in business for almost 50 years before it focused on the pralines
Its beginnings in 1878 were more ice cream parlor than candy factory
and its best-selling products until World War II were ice cream and a sherbet-like product called gem
That is not to say the pralines haven’t been important
who took over the business from his father
in 1885 (family lore has it that William lost the company in a poker game and David made good the debt)
and it remains the same today: Texas pecans
At first the candies were sold only by special order—and only when Lammes had enough orders to produce 25 pounds
when the pralines became so popular that the company started its mail-order division specifically to sell them
Lammes sells a half-million tons of candy per year
split half and half between its five Austin-area retail stores and the mail-order and wholesale business
Customers have sent Lammes pralines to locations as distant as Malaysia and Iceland
and one customer used to send a box to the queen of England every year
is not Lammes’ only longtime employee
About half of the 70 have been there at least 15 years
“It’s a family thing,” Walston says
“They’re sincere and sold on the product; I just love the family and business
I love it so much that sometimes I act like it’s mine.”
That might well be the reason for its enduring success
“When a company lasts five generations
it’s all about the strength of the family,” says Chip Besio
the director of the Center for Marketing Management Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas
family-owned businesses don’t last much past the third generation because the next generation isn’t always willing and ready to do what the previous generations did to get the company to that point.”
“We’re all in this together,” she says
Teich handles sales and marketing; Bryan D
Teich oversees the financial and operations parts of the business; and Lana Schmidt runs the retail stores
“The people I work with are the reason I work here
There is a comfort and a security in those bonds.”

So what is the Operating System powering your Smart TV today
From both a TV manufacturer perspective as well as from a consumer perspective there are many options available
We’ll see that this is a very fragmented marketplace that also heavily depends on which country/region you happen to live in
It certainly reminds us of the OS wars on the desktop/laptops and the mobile phone… First the available options from a worldwide perspective:
1) A customized Android AOSP or another customized OS with or without a combination with a 3rd party app store like Opera TV (now called Vewd – basically an HTML5-based storefront of web apps optimized for TV)
2) Android TV
4) Roku TV
a heavily modified version of Linux called Roku OS
5) Tizen OS
6) WebOS
the third party non-proprietary Smart TV Operating Systems are: Android AOSP
Roku TV and Firefox OS (the now discontinued open-source operating system)
The proprietary Smart TV Operating Systems here are: My Home Screen 2.0
Clarification: “Proprietary” means TVs whose operating system is made specifically by the TV manufacturer
versus an established broadly used OS by multiple vendors
In this dossier we’ll take a closer look at who supports what
Option number 1: Android AOSP
Android AOSP (Android Open Source Project) is an open source software stack for a wide range of devices and a corresponding open source project led by Google
Not to be confused with Android TV (see below)
AOSP can be used to create a customized Operating System for almost any device available
Since it is missing the Google Play Store (not part of Android AOSP!)
manufacturers will have to add/create the missing components
A number of TV and Set Top Box manufacturers used Android AOSP to build a solution before Android TV was launched
Some manufacturers are still using this option: An example of a well-known Android AOSP fork is Amazon Fire TV
basically the Operating System Amazon’s digital media players run (called Fire OS)
There are two versions of Fire OS: Fire OS 5 and 6
Fire OS 5 is a fork of Android 5.1 (Lollipop
while Fire OS 6 is based on Android 7.1 (Nougat API
Recently Fire OS has become available as an option for TV manufacturers
the following vendors offer Smart TV’s based on Android AOSP:
Vu Televisions (based on Android AOSP with an Opera TV/Vewd 3rd party app store)
who are these Chinese Smart TV manufacturers
Changhong (Changhong Sichuan Changhong Electric Co.
is a Chinese consumer electronics company (including Smart TV manufacturing) based in Mianyang
Konka (Konka Group Co.
is a Chinese manufacturer of electronics and telecommunication products based in Shenzhen
Skyworth (Skyworth is headquartered in Shenzhen
thus making televisions that retail under brand names other than its own)
TCL (TCL stands for “The Creative Life”
It is also one of the largest Smart TV manufacturers worldwide
An example of Android AOSP integration in their TV’s is their FFalcon – Thunderbird brand – these TV’s run what they call the FFUI
which is based on the TCL TV+OS Operating System
Xiaomi (Xiaomi was founded in 2010 by serial entrepreneur Lei Jun
The Mi TV is a line of smart TVs designed and marketed by Xiaomi
They run Android (AOSP) and were initially announced in 2013)
Option number 2: Android TV
Android TV is a fully fledged professional Operating System that can be deployed on both Smart TV’s and Set Top Boxes
It comes with the Google Play Store for Android TV
So here is the list of TV Manufacturers (vendors/brands) supporting Android TV today:
– Bang & Olufsen (B&O)
– Haier (Haier moved from using Roku to Android TV in 2017)
– Hisense

– LeEco
– Philips (TP Vision is the company that engages in developing
manufacturing and marketing Philips branded Android TV sets in Europe
Paraguay and selected countries in Asia-Pacific excluding China)
– Sharp
– Skyworth
– Sony
– TCL (TV brand names include: TCL and Thomson)
– Toshiba
– Vestel
Option number 3: Firefox OS (now called “My Home Screen 2.0“)
This means that the OS essentially also moved from the non-proprietary to the proprietary Smart TV OS category
Therefore the ONLY vendor using this OS is:
Panasonic
Option number 4: Roku TV
Roku is a manufacturer of streaming devices with a very specific geographical market share/footprint: They are non-existent outside North America with regards to their Roku TV solution (their external players however are available in NA
Roku OS is a heavily modified version of Linux and Roku announced its first branded Smart TV 2014
These TVs are now manufactured by companies (licensee brands running Roku OS and using Roku’s Smart TV hardware reference design) like Element
They use the Roku user interface from Roku OS as the “brain” of the TV
Therefore the licensee brands of Roku TV are (North America only!):
– Element Electronics
– Hisense USA
– Hitachi
– Insignia
– RCA
– Sharp USA
– TCL USA
– Haier (Haier moved from using Roku to Android TV in 2017)
Option number 5: Tizen OS
Tizen is an operating system based on a Linux kernel
It is a project within the Linux Foundation and is governed by a Technical Steering Group (TSG)
Tizen is controlled by Samsung and also backed by Intel
is the only Tizen member incorporating and developing the operating system
increasingly distributing it to its own products
The operating system consists of many open source components
however a number of components are internally developed by Samsung (e.g.
These are released under the Flora License
essentially a BSD- or Apache-style license except granting patents to “Tizen Certified Platform” only: Therefore it is very unlikely any other vendor will use or be able to use Tizen OS on their non-Samsung devices
Note that the Samsung UI on these TV’s is called/marketed as “Smart Hub”
Samsung
Option number 6: WebOS
An OS with a long and complicated history: WebOS
is a Linux kernel-based multitasking operating system for smart devices such as Smart TVs and it has also been used as a mobile operating system
The operating system was sold and patents were licensed to LG Electronics back in 2013: HP still held on to patents underlying WebOS
LG has expanded its use to various IoT devices
LG showcased an LG Wearable Platform OS (WebOS) smartwatch in early 2015
HP sold its webOS patents to Qualcomm: LG did not get the patents to WebOS; those went to Qualcomm
LG is the only vendor using it for a range of devices today: At CES 2017
LG even announced a smart refrigerator with WebOS
because of the complicated licensing situation
it is highly unlikely any other vendor will start using WebOS for Smart TV’s
The only vendor using this OS for Smart TV is:
LG
That’s the Smart TV OS playing field
A very fragmented marketplace indeed: Some larger manufacturers even support multiple Operating Systems
Brand license agreements… But what does this mean
For an OTT player it is now a question of prioritizing app development: They will need to look at it from a regional (per country) market share perspective
but should also not forget to take into account a global trends perspective
Consumers have other worries: For how long will the vendor of my choice support OS upgrades (yes
we’ve seen this dilemma before on mobile phones for example)
Consumers are not buying TV’s to use them for only 3 or 4 years
Also the availability of key apps (region or country specific) is important
It is advisable to make a list of apps you will want to use on your TV before deciding to buy into any platform: The app may not be available for the platform of your choice (typical apps to check are Netflix
Unfortunately most average consumers won’t even know what a Smart TV OS is in the first place
but an informed consumer should ask which Operating System is powering the Smart TV they are thinking about buying – well before making their final purchase/decision
