UPS (NYSE: UPS) today announced the ground breaking of a new €160 million advanced-technology super hub in Hannover-Langenhagen at a ceremony attended by Dr
Lower Saxony Minister for Economic Affairs
the hub – one of UPS’s largest investments outside the United States – will serve as an important link in UPS’s European and German network and offer businesses improved access to the company’s smart global logistics network
“The growth of business and retail e-commerce – with online retail sales alone expected to reach nearly €70 billion in Germany this year – has created unprecedented demand for UPS’s services,” said Frank Sportolari
“E-commerce offers small and medium-sized businesses a platform to trade like micro-multinationals
Transforming our existing sorting and distribution hub in Hannover-Langenhagen will allow businesses of all sizes in Germany to reach new business customers and consumers worldwide
To support the Hannover-Langenhagen super hub’s role in UPS’s network
both in operations and administrative functions
Advanced automation technology will allow UPS to double the sorting capacity of the facility – from 15,000 packages per hour to 30,000
with a separate processing flow being installed for bulky items
“Logistics is one of the most important economic sectors and largest employers in Lower Saxony,” said Dr
Lower Saxony’s minister for Economic Affairs
“Langenhagen and Hannover are located in the middle of Germany and in the heart of Europe – a potential from which the logistics sector can profit like hardly any other location
The expansion of this UPS branch is thus a commitment to the business location of the Hannover region and at the same time a door opener for the export activities of local companies.”
The new hub will cover an area of 24,000 square meters – equivalent to three soccer fields – once the second phase of construction is completed in 2023
Phase one of construction will involve a new building being erected alongside the existing facility
Phase two will involve demolition of the existing sorting and distribution centre and the construction of a second building
Supporting UPS to meet its global sustainability goals
the hub will be built to the German Sustainable Building Council’s (DGNB) Gold standard and will include the provisions to support future delivery fleet electrification
And to ensure that sustainability does not stop at the power socket
UPS in Germany is sourcing its electricity – for its facilities and electric delivery vehicles – exclusively from renewable sources
The new facility is part of the company’s multi-year European investment plan
aimed at modernizing and expanding the UPS network across the continent
Investments in Germany as part of this program include new and upgraded hubs in Bielefeld
complementing recent European super hubs in London
UPS is enabling companies of all sizes in Germany
across Europe and around the world to deliver products when
UPS has been operating in Germany since 1976 and was the first international market it expanded to outside North America
The company currently has 86 operating facilities in Germany
including its European air hub at Cologne-Bonn Airport

Groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a cutting-edge Continental distribution center near Hanover airport
Representatives from the world of politics
Continental and the project developer cleared the way for the new €50 million project in March
drive belts and surface materials for the automotive industry will be sent all across Europe
Bertram Projektmanagement GmbH will invest around €40 million into the state-of-the-art building and outdoor areas of the approximately 80,000 m2 site on the corner of Münchner Strasse and Schwabenstrasse
Continental is also investing more than €10 million in machinery and equipment
“We are seeing increasing growth in the automotive original equipment and replacement business
so we need to further expand our existing infrastructure
The conditions at our site in Vahrenwald are no longer adequate to meet future requirements
The state-of-the-art distribution center in Langenhagen offers everything we need to ensure that we are optimally equipped to manage the dynamic vehicle parts business,” says Philip Nelles
surface materials from the technology company that are installed in vehicle interiors will be stored in and dispatched from the building
The cross-divisional distribution center will make processes even more efficient
Nelles describes the consolidation of this new distribution center as a “clear commitment to the Hanover region.”
Langenhagen’s Mayor Mirko Heuer: “With the planned business park
Bertram Projektmanagement GmbH is creating a cutting-edge distribution center – complete with an administrative building – that meets the specific requirements of future global distribution operations
I am delighted that with Continental as a cooperation partner
another globally successful company has chosen the business location of Langenhagen
creating a wide range of jobs at the new site and
further consolidating the attractiveness of Langenhagen for the automotive sector
“Property in Langenhagen is made for Continental
It not only leaves open future potential for expansion
but also offers excellent connections to national and international markets,” explains Benjamin Bertram
managing director of the Hanover-based project and property development company
which is working on the project together with the Lübeck-based architecture firm architekten allianz – lejeune & pflüger GmbH
the building complex covering 34,000 m2
with around 20,000 spaces for pallets and a fully automated small parts warehouse will be ready for service
This will help to make working procedures even more efficient
“The new distribution center will reduce the number of truck journeys undertaken every year by around 5,000
reducing nitrogen oxide pollution in the centers of both Hanover and Langenhagen
It will also improve safety on the approach roads to our production site in Vahrenwald,” explains Nelles
One benefit that is also welcomed by Hanover’s Mayor Stefan Schostok: “The approach that Continental is taking is exactly right and fits in perfectly with our strategy
If truck journeys can be coordinated effectively so that half-full cargo and empty runs are avoided
The challenge of reducing emissions in traffic requires intelligent
coordinated concepts and the commitment of all companies and individuals in Hanover
I therefore welcome Continental’s investment.”
The logistics for surface materials will initially start at the end of 2018 and for drive belts at the start of 2019
around 160 jobs – to be filled internally by Continental – will be based at the new site
Congratulations to Sydney and Morgan Langenhagen of Cohasset on a fun and successful sailing racing season out of the Hingham Yacht Club
In her first year sailing Sydney won her Optimist class season championship and made a lot of new friends
She also had podium finishes in all six regattas she entered
including 3 victories and a silver medal at the US Sailing Junior Olympics in Marblehead
EmailNew cutting-edge distribution center for drive belts and surface materials in Langenhagen: The first goods are set to be delivered from here to customers across Europe at the end of 2018
Hanover-based developer Bertram also wants to put €40 million into the future-oriented building and the outdoor areas of the approximately 80,000 m2 building plot on Münchner Straße
but also offers excellent connections to national and international markets,” explains Benjamin Bertram from Bertram Projektmanagement GmbH
which is working on the project together with the architecture firm from Lübeck
architekten allianz – lejeune & pflüger GmbH
The building application has already been submitted
a building complex with a surface area of 34,000 m2
around 20,000 spaces for pallets and a fully-automated small parts warehouse will be built
This will make it possible to make working procedures even more efficient
a measure that will save around 5,000 truck journeys per year
The company is currently predicting a maximum of 70 arrivals at and departures from Langenhagen per day
around 160 jobs will be based at the new site
“We currently store our drive belts on seven floors
which we will operate with our own employees
This will allow us to meet our customers’ requirements for shorter delivery times even more successfully
especially for the vehicle parts market,” adds Nelles
The freed-up spaces can also be used for other purposes
as the demand for industrial and automotive drive belts is growing
Continental has used an external service provider for the storage of its surface materials
“The demands on our infrastructure have also increased as a result of the acquisition of the Hornschuch Group at the start of the year and our own organic growth,” explains Dr
head of the Benecke-Hornschuch Surface Group business unit and responsible for the Vinnhorst location
cross-divisional distribution center will make us even more efficient in the future.”

The first IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Youth Development Camp has been praised by participants following its conclusion in Langenhagen
supported by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior
gathered 23 players from eight countries at the Eishalle Langenhagen for on and off-ice training and education activities over four days from 29 October
Nineteen-year-old aspiring goaltender Jaewoong Lee from South Korea believes what he learnt will help him towards his goal of gaining a place on the national team in time for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games
I enjoyed the ice-time the most and I got better going back and forth in goal
I will try to get on the national team because I would like to play at home in 2018,” Lee said
will play in his first national team game in a few weeks: “I really enjoyed the camp even though it was physically demanding
I definitely learnt that I need to go ahead with top speed and then I learnt how to support players and how to position myself properly
“I also improved in skating especially my speed
Sixteen-year-old Canadian Geneva Coulter was one of the female participants
it was an incredible experience,” Coulter said
“I really liked getting to meet so many people from around the world that I wouldn’t have met in any normal scenario
“I realised how important turning with the puck was
and how important even simple drills can be for skill development and how difficult they are compared to the complex drills that you think would be harder.”
showed the potential reach of the activities beyond the camp’s end:
This is the first time I’ve been outside of the United States for playing sled hockey
I mostly liked the different drills and stations we did each day and meeting new people from different countries
“I’ve definitely gotten better at using my left hand
I usually use my right hand so trying to learn how to use both hands in protecting the puck is something I’ve learnt and hope to get better at
“I’m going to bring some of the drills that I learnt back to my team and continue to build my strength.”
A number of national team and club coaches also took part in the activities as observers
to see if they could utilise any of the training techniques
Four highly experienced coaches from Norway
Canada and the USA conducted sessions on stick-handling
There were also classroom sessions on the Paralympic Movement and presentations on anti-doping and classification given by Peter Van de Vliet
the International Paralympic Committee’s Medical and Scientific Director
Head Coach of the Croatian national team and one of the observers said: “From my perspective
the camp is extremely useful because it provides a useful exchange of experiences
and also provides an opportunity for us less experienced coaches to learn from the best
“I have learnt a lot of new exercises that are important as a basis
without which it is impossible to make progress especially in this sport.”
IPC Ice Sledge Hockey will now review the feedback received from the coaches and players and look at how youth development can be continued into future seasons
This year’s must-see shows range from a Nordic Pavilion exploring transgender spaces to a compelling Lebanese project confronting the realities of ecocide
Frieze returns to The Shed in May with more than 65 of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries and the acclaimed Focus section led by Lumi Tan
history and memory are recurring themes in Maya Schweizer’s photographs and videos
Seeshow plays no further role in the exhibition
present in each of these five works is her constant observing
These works also share a specific theme: the filmic exploration of those public spaces and architecture that represent history
frame one (2007) acts as a counterpoint to this theme
placing Schweizer’s family history centre stage
The artist reconstructs fragmentary memories of her Jewish grandmother
who only avoided being deported from Lyon in 1944 thanks to a misunderstanding
and between the 1940s and Schweizer’s everyday life today
This back-and-forth motion also shapes the film’s image-text-sound structure: visually
geographical space is broken down among Aix-en-Provence
while audible is Schweizer’s grandmother telling of her past
connecting meta-narrative and family documentary
The three-channel video Au dos de la carte postale (On the back of the postcard
2010) addresses in more depth questions of public space and the function of architecture
Focusing on the Eiffel Tower as the symbol of Paris and as a tourist hub within the city
Schweizer combines photo and film footage from the Paris World’s Fair of 1889
as well as footage showing ethnographic displays popular around this time
She combines this material with scenes of today’s illegal street traders
and the tourist attractions around the tower
ethnographic displays and the precarious situation of street traders who come from former French colonies
besides highlighting the repetition of (post-colonial) history
Schweizer also uses juxtaposition to examine the modes of construction present in historical and contemporary images
a Bridge and a Church (2012) makes do without subtitles
using high-contrast black-and-white images to examine changes in the urban fabric around Bratislava’s Rybné námestie (Fish Square)
During construction of the New Bridge over the Danube between 1967 and 1972
the apparently unnecessary demolition of the old Jewish quarter and the synagogue sparked protest from the local population
The square’s architectural volumes are scanned in fragments and combined with seemingly casual footage of the city’s inhabitants going about their daily business
raising questions concerning a collective culture of memory and the political-social responsibility of each individual in relation to public space
there were links here with the only photographic work in the exhibition
entitled Which story would you prefer not to recall
of the Eichmann trial in 1961) and portraits of famous personalities (including Barack Obama)
To some of these she added coloured Post-it notes with handwritten phases
shows a car driving towards the Gaza Strip
the image annotated with the question: ‘What would you prefer not to see?’ In general
the artist generates an incomplete tableau of collective memory and questions the way history is produced and visually recorded
The exhibition as a whole functions something like a many-layered image-text-sound album with five tracks
The viewer’s attention is raised whenever the private and the public
the real and the symbolic overlap – as new narrative modes and all that emerges between the images point beyond the individual work and reach out to the viewer’s own experiences.Translated by Nicholas Grindell

According to the model of ‘rites of passage’ developed by the anthropologist Arnold van Gennep
an individual moves through several stages of life
These become evident at points of transition
It is this passage to adulthood that Kerstin Cmelka’s video installation Mikrodrama #11 (2014) addresses
by the artist herself) lies next to an ex-lover
who talks to her openly about his 21-year-old girlfriend
The only downside is the stress of having to constantly educate her
(He recounts an annoying situation where he had to explain to her who Martin Kippenberger was.) The woman listens patiently
surprisingly interested in his new relationship
and responds without condemning his predilection for young students
This was just one description of the appeal of youth from an adult perspective that recurred in the Berlin-based artist’s solo exhibition at Kunstverein Langenhagen
Visitors were led into the gallery by a 24-metre textile sculpture
twisting its way through the elongated space
The sculpture provided seating from which to watch the three videos and series of photographs that comprised the show
Each of the videos replicates an identical scene featuring three different actors in the same role
each character presents his or her situation in a way that deliberately highlights the body language we adopt when faced with awkward or intimate conversations
Cmelka analyzes contemporary behavioural patterns
emphasizing the subtle moments between spoken words
she works exclusively with people she knows and uses dialogues generated through personal conversations
Our knowledge that the male actors are her friends generates a friction between the seemingly generic behaviour conveyed through their amateur performances
but the actors’ obvious familiarity with one another adds an unexpected level of intimacy.
Accompanying the videos was a series of 11 black and white photographs of the artist’s friends and acquaintances in the 1980s
showing seemingly carefree punkish adolescents
Cmelka re-photographed these snapshots and reprinted them on Baryta paper
so they no longer look like images from a personal archive; instead
the restaging gives the protagonists the air of iconic pop or film stars
lending them a distance or aloofness not present in the originals
Cmelka’s Mikrodrama #11 highlighted the ways in which contemporary ideas about maturity and the process of ageing are deeply connected to social rules and codes
Perhaps we’re not really getting older: it might just be social conventions that make us appear to be ageing

Continental is using the latest digital technologies in the distribution center. “We have a fully automated small-parts store, have installed a new warehouse management system and are using hand and finger scanners that are wirelessly integrated in gloves,” reports Zempel. “If you want to be competitive in today’s market, it’s important to have efficient processes – and these also reduce the staff workload.”
The university is also following operational processes in the distribution center and is in close contact with Continental in order to turn its research results into concrete measures
“We have already jointly developed a consolidation concept
merging the components from various sections of the warehouse,” reports Zempel
we will process the individual components making up a consignment in parallel
This means locations will be occupied for shorter periods
and we will be improve overall performance.” The project manager also places particular emphasis within the logistical processes on the areas of picking
The collaborative partners plan to address more complex issues subsequently
such as the addition of further products and customers and continual process improvement – academia and industry operating hand in hand
A nationwide construction strike has begun this week in Germany
It is the first strike in this sector for 17 years and the first nationwide strike for 22 years
It began early on Monday morning when several construction crews in Lower Saxony stopped work
construction workers in Osnabrück and Hanover-Langenhagen
in Jena and Mannheim had joined the strike
Agriculture and the Environment (IG BAU) is demanding a monthly increase of €500 in collectively agreed wages in the main construction sector
This is in response to the strong pressure from rank-and-file construction workers
it is doing everything it can to keep the dispute under control
has announced: “There will now be a strike
he has not actually ordered an all-out strike
but only regional and sporadic “spot strikes.”
The reason for the strike is the refusal of the building contractors to accept an arbitration ruling from the end of April
IG BAU would have accepted this arbitrator’s award
although it would have been far from sufficient to compensate for the chronically below-average collectively agreed wages
let alone to make up for losses due to inflation over the last three years
The last collective agreement for construction workers was reached in autumn 2021
before inflation exploded because of the government’s pro-war policy and the energy crisis
construction workers in the west of Germany received a 6.2 percent wage increase and in the east an 8.5 percent increase
consumer prices rose by 14.7 percent during this period
If one considers that workers and all low-income earners suffer particularly from the price explosion for petrol
Workers bear the full burden of the pro-war policy
The disparity in the construction industry has also been confirmed by the head of collective bargaining policy at the trade union-backed Hans Böckler Foundation
the construction industry was one of the “sectors with significantly below-average pay increases” and a “considerable need to catch up.” In this sector
“the most recently concluded collective wage agreements date back to the time before the significant increase in inflation rates,” wrote Schulten
the construction industry has been booming over the last seven years
“Construction companies have made excellent profits in the last six or seven years
And the construction industry as a whole is also doing well now
there is a small dip in new residential construction
but we have an excellent economic situation in transport infrastructure construction and bridge building
new residential construction only accounts for 30 percent of residential construction.”
an arbitration settlement for a new collective agreement was presented
a judge and former president of the Federal Social Court
His arbitration award provided for a monthly increase of €250 in collective wages for all employees from May
4.15 percent was to be added in the west and 4.95 percent in the east
although it would not have come close to compensating for the years of real wage reductions in the construction industry
Most building contractors had also already accepted the decision
the Federation of the German Construction Industry and the Central Association of the German Construction Industry (ZDB) nevertheless rejected it
While the construction industry accepted the result
The ZDB had set itself a quota of 85 percent
but only 82 percent of the building trade and craft businesses agreed
The arbitration was therefore declared a failure
The current strike is a reaction to this situation and contains huge social explosiveness
The construction industry currently employs up to one million people
800,000 in western Germany and 200,000 in eastern Germany
Many large construction sites are characterised by confusing subcontractor arrangements
Turkey or other countries are cheated out of wages that are already far too low
it often emerges that the subsidiaries or subcontractors that hired them are now insolvent or have disappeared completely
Construction workers are immensely dissatisfied
They have not received any wage increase for the whole of the last year 2023
even though they undertake hard physical labour in all weathers
more than 80 per cent of workers toil for well over 40 hours a week
despite a contractually agreed working week of 39.8 hours
daily working time of 10 hours are not uncommon
the six-day week is also commonplace and overtime bonuses are not always paid
This section of the working class has an important role to play in the fight against wage theft, speed-ups and exploitation. They are not only confronted with the building conglomerates and the property speculators and shareholders behind them. They are also confronted with a coalition government in Berlin, which is placing everything on a war footing. In its 2024 budget
the government has initiated a social reversal: While defence spending is exploding
Urban Development and Construction has been cut by 5 percent despite the catastrophic situation on the housing market
Construction workers can count on the sympathy of the entire working class in their struggle
and especially on the support of workers in other European countries with whom they have many personal connections
This is because construction crews are often international in composition
construction workers must unite in action committees that act independently of the IG BAU apparatus
The entire leadership of IG BAU is closely linked to the government and the construction companies
IG BAU boss Robert Feiger is a member of the Social Democrats (SPD)
but also those in building cleaning and waste collection
the construction union has lost over two thirds of its members
had over 720,000 members in the west alone
IG BAU is not only seen as conservative and loyal to the government
but its leaders also support its pro-war policies
Many IG BAU executive committee members are respectable supervisory board members of large construction companies
who sits on the supervisory board of Hochtief AG together with his fellow board member Nicole Simons
deputy chairwoman of the supervisory board of the WISAG holding company Aveco
IG BAU agreed to the arbitrator’s decision out of consideration for the economy
“The compromise would have demanded a lot from us too,” admitted IG BAU boss Feiger
“but we were aware of our responsibility to society as a whole
but the construction companies themselves.” However
IG BAU is still not initiating a ballot to organise a nationwide wage strike but has only expressly called for “selective warning strikes.”
IG BAU will do everything in its power to avoid an all-out strike
It will grasp at the first opportunity to stall the strike
several employers now want to voluntarily increase workers’ wages: “The German Construction Industry Federation (HDB) and the ZDB have proposed a five percent increase in the west and a six per cent increase in the east,” it says
the union will utilise such an opportunity as quickly as possible and sell out the strike
With a symbolic turf-cutting act, construction work has begun for an industrial park that Garbe Industrial Real Estate GmbH is developing in Hanover-Langenhagen
A state-of-the-art property with a total hall area of 15,500 sq m is being built in the immediate vicinity of the international airport
Small- and medium-sized enterprises in particular are to be addressed with the project development
“They impress with their innovative strength and form the backbone of the German economy,” says Adrian Zellner
Member of the Executive Board and Head of Business Development at Garbe Industrial Real Estate
The Hamburg-based company has designed a new type of building for this target group: the Garbe IndustrialQuarter
The format is being implemented for the first time in Langenhagen
The IndustrialQuarter is primarily characterised by a resource-saving construction method and an area key that can be flexibly tailored to the needs of the tenants
The property planned in Langenhagen consists of four hall sections of up to 4,200 sq m
which can be divided into units starting at around 1,800 sq m
Each unit includes office and social areas that total almost 1,000 sq m
In addition, each unit has ramps and floor-level sectional doors for loading and unloading trucks. “These small sizes make the Garbe IndustrialQuarter especially interesting for start-ups and expanding companies in the areas of last-mile logistics
e-commerce and light industrial,” emphasises Zellner
LIST Bau Nordhorn was commissioned with the construction as general contractor. “We look forward to working with Garbe again and building a modern logistics centre within the next seven months
A lot of work has gone into the design of the facade
which visually stands out from the familiar look of a logistics hall with wooden elements and a strip of light,” reports Jens Schulte
The property in Langenhagen is being built without any fixed rental commitments
“We are currently in talks with a number of potential tenants
This is not only due to the new type of building
but also to the excellent location,” explains Adrian Zellner
The IndustrialQuarter is being built on a 32,000 sq m plot of land in the “Am Pferdemarkt” industrial park
the A2 Dortmund-Berlin and the A7 Kassel-Hamburg motorways
The industrial park is connected to public transport

The UK plans to send armored anti-aircraft vehicles to Ukraine, The Times of London reported
The Stormer vehicles launch 17 high-velocity Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles
Starstreak is Britain's most advanced operated portable missile system, and the UK sent a consignment to Ukraine in March
Ukraine has only been able to fire the British missiles using shoulder launchers or portable stands
The 13.5-tonne Stormer vehicles are easier to operate
and Ukrainian forces will be able to speed to locations at 50mph
The vehicle operates with a crew of three — a driver
Sources told The Sun that "a handful of Stormers" will be deployed to Ukraine alongside 120 personnel carriers
It can be loaded onto C-17 transport planes and flown to Ukraine in days
The provision of Stormers to Ukraine has not been officially announced
but The Sun reported that Defence Secretary Ben Wallace would be making a statement in parliament this week
"It is no secret that the UK has committed to helping Ukraine with its anti-air capabilities," a source told the paper
The Ministry of Defence hosted a Ukrainian government delegation at the Salisbury Plain Training Area two weeks ago and is said to have demonstrated the technology
The move marks a significant increase in heavy weaponry to Ukraine from Britain as Russia continues with its offensive in the Donbas region
Western governments have only sent Ukraine shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles to defend against Russian forces
"The Stormer-Starstreak combination will boost Ukraine's fighting capability," Colonel Richard Kemp
a former commander of British troops in Afghanistan
highly mobile combat vehicle that will do severe damage to any attempts at low-level attack by Putin's air force."
Kemp told the paper that the move is likely to anger Moscow
which has already expressed displeasure with the West for sending weapons to Ukraine
British special forces are also believed to be training local troops in Kyiv for the first time since Russia's invasion, Ukrainian commanders told The Times of London.
The British soldiers have reportedly trained Ukrainian troops to use NLAWs

“Search for black Audi after attempt to blow up a cash machine,” “Neighbors hear loud bang
perpetrators flee in Audi,” “Car chase through three federal states”: Headlines like these have become commonplace around Germany as raids on cash machines have increased in number
About 369 ATMs were destroyed by explosions last year
a 38 percent increase compared with 2017 and 10 times more than a decade ago
according to data from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA)
Most of the crimes follow the same pattern
with perpetrators using an electric detonator or fuse to set off a mixture of gases pumped into the machine — or more rarely a solid explosive
perpetrators often plan the attacks “months in advance,” Europol has said
with one man killed in October last year while attempting a similar attack on a ticket machine at a local train station in Halle
successful attacks on ATMs are highly lucrative
raiders who blasted open a Commerzbank cash machine in Eschborn
The police managed to grab one suspect who returned to the scene of the crime in the small hours
but his accomplices and the cash have disappeared without trace
Frankfurt Prosecutor Christian Hartwig said
Many cash machine crackers come “from the Netherlands and central Europe” to Germany simply because of its favorable geography
Germany’s geographical position at the center of Europe and its dense web of motorways
much of which is not covered by a speed limit
means that criminals can more easily shake off police than elsewhere — driving German-made sports cars
One particularly notorious group has plagued the state of North Rhine-Westphalia
which shares a border with the Netherlands and where the largest number of bank raids are carried out
The press dubbed the group the “Audi gang” because their getaway car of choice tended to be rented or stolen vehicles of that particular high-end brand
Three members of the gang were last month hauled before a court in state capital
accused of stealing more than 600,000 euros and causing 100,000 euros of damage in 2017 and last year
a total of 128 suspects were arrested over cash machine robberies
Germany accounts for more than one-third of the attacks recorded across 11 large European countries surveyed by the European Association for Secure Transactions (EAST)
The nation’s 58,000 machines make up just 16 percent of the installed base across all the countries in the study
While cash machine attacks have mounted in Germany
the number reported in the other 10 nations studied by EAST
fell 15 percent to just under 700 altogether
Such data highlight how banks can work together with government support to reduce the incentives to blast open ATMs
agreeing to hold less cash in each machine
but refill them more regularly to reduce the potential payoff for any one raid
France ordered banks in 2015 to fit ATMs with systems that stain banknotes if they are forcibly removed
Europol credits the move with sharply reducing the number of attacks in France
which fell from 304 in 2013 to 58 last year
according to French National Gendarmerie figures
criminals fail to secure any banknotes in 60 percent of cases thanks to well-protected machines
130,000 euros are stolen in each German crime
compared with 17,100 euros across the 11 countries surveyed by EAST
a development that leaves the company vulnerable to potential future charges
The aerospace company breached the 2021 deferred prosecution agreement by failing to “design
and enforce a compliance and ethics program to prevent and detect violations of the U.S
fraud laws throughout its operations,” federal prosecutors said in a letter filed in a Texas court
Prosecutors said they had not decided what to do next
adding that they would alert the court about any new charges no later than July 7
In a statement to The Daily Beast on Tuesday
Boeing confirmed that it had received the Justice Department’s letter
“We believe that we have honored the terms of that agreement
and look forward to the opportunity to respond to the Department on this issue,” it said
we will engage with the Department with the utmost transparency
as we have throughout the entire term of the agreement
including in response to their questions following the Alaska Airlines 1282 accident.”
prosecutors charged Boeing with deceiving federal regulators about the capabilities of a new feature on its planes implicated in both the deadly crashes
which killed a combined 346 people in 2018 and 2019
Boeing agreed to pay a $2.5 billion penalty
But the plane-maker has been thrust back into an uncomfortable spotlight in recent months
5 mid-air blowout of a door plug on a 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines
A preliminary investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board released in February found that four bolts meant to hold the door plug in place were missing before the jet took off
The next month, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Justice Department had quietly launched a criminal investigation into the blowout
The families of the 346 crash victims have long held that they want to see Boeing properly held accountable for its role in the double tragedies
and have pushed for federal investigators to reopen their probe
a professor of law at the University of Utah College of Law who is representing the families
called the Tuesday letter “a positive first step” in a statement
“But we need to see further action from DOJ to hold Boeing accountable
and plan to use our meeting on May 31 to explain in more detail what we believe would be a satisfactory remedy to Boeing’s ongoing criminal conduct,” he said

Fraport AG is one of the leading companies in the global airport business and active at 29 airports on four continents (IPO in 2001)
Fraport provides the full range of operational and management services relating to airside and terminal operations
The 2019 traffic figures for Frankfurt Airport are impressive: more than 1,400 aircraft took off and landed and over 6,000 tonnes of cargo were handled at FRA per day
Digitalization at Fraport: for greater efficiency
Fraport AG is digitalizing to improve its processes
Innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence are being leveraged to update and network airport operations
this goes hand in hand with a fundamentally new way of thinking – with the goal of developing innovative new business models and ensuring long-term competitiveness
Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide (Fraport AG) signed an agreement on August 6
to sell its entire 30 percent stake in Flughafen Hannover-Langenhagen GmbH (FHLG) to iCON Flughafen GmbH (iCON) – part of the iCON Infrastructure Group – for 109.2 million euros
FHLG is the operating company of Hanover Airport (HAJ) in northern Germany
Fraport acquired shares in FHLG in two steps: initially 20 percent in 1998
The other 70 percent of FHLG is held equally by two co-shareholders: the City of Hanover and the Hannoversche Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH – a wholly-owned company belonging to the State of Lower Saxony
The closing of the transaction is dependent on the contractually agreed pre-emption rights held by the two co-shareholders
Fraport currently expects the transaction to be concluded during the next two months
commented on the divestiture: “For some time
we have received strong interest from the market for Fraport to sell its stake in Hanover Airport
This underscores Fraport’s competence in increasing the value of our airport investments
we are pursuing the goal to acquire majority stakes in airports or to hold a position of significant influence in these airport companies.”
traffic at Hanover Airport rose by 8.5 percent to 5.9 million passengers
HAJ achieved a 7.8 percent increase in passenger traffic to almost 2.8 million passengers (June 2018: up 10.2 percent to 632,621)
Schulte added: “Hanover Airport is a solid business with a bright future
It has developed into an important aviation gateway in northern Germany for both passenger and cargo traffic
We would like to thank the other FHLG shareholders and the Hanover region for the excellent cooperation
Based on current book values and current expectations – that both co-shareholders will not exercise their pre-emption rights – Fraport AG expects the Hanover transaction to contribute about 85 million euros to the Group EBT
This will translate into approximately 25 million euros for the Group EBITDA and EBIT for the current 2018 business year
The Group’s financial result will be positively influenced by about 60 million euros
After deduction of related income tax liabilities
the transaction will also have a noticeable positive impact of about 77 million euros on the Group result (net profit)

BRAINTREE — Members of Thayer Academy's class of 2018 realize the lessons they were never tested on in class were among the most important
senior speaker James Kotopoulos said he’s a big fan of math and numbers
can’t fully measure the significance of his and his classmates time at Thayer
Calculating the numbers of games played at Thayer
the hours spent driving to and from school activities
or the hours the class of 2018 spent together could never fully convey the whole story
the depth of love their families feel for them
or the warmth of building a sense of community that the graduates have experienced together transcend calculations
“These numbers don’t capture the feelings of a second home,” he said
Valedictorian Anna Huycke likened graduation to her time spent on the Thayer stage during theater performances
“The best part of not knowing exactly what comes next is that there are no limits to what we can accomplish.”
Huycke said that while their graduation might feel like an ending
the empty stage that Thayer built for us is waiting for whatever adventures may take place,” she said

Hannover Airport was temporarily closed following the discovery of explosives at a cargo centre, according to reports.
Employees at the UPS depot alerted authorities after finding the item.
Passengers on flights to Hannover's Langenhagen Airport were diverted.
One, Adam Nicholls, detailed the consequences.
“Just landed back at Heathrow Airport after Hanover Airport got shut down due to a suspect package, after we had circled over head for 30 minutes,” he said.
The airport reportedly opened later after security officials detonated the suspicious package.
