Deborah Pressman reclaims her roots by honoring a man dedicated to preserving Jewish history in Germany Deborah Pressman's father was one of the lucky ones
He left Germany in 1936 when it was still possible for Jews to escape
most Jews couldn't evade the Nazis' far-reaching tentacles and ended up filling boxcars bound for concentration camps
It was not something she had ever wanted to do before
But she was drawn to make the trip in order to honor a man who is working to preserve the Jewish history in the town of her ancestors
Pressman is not sure anything short of this would have brought her to this foreign land
she is eager to talk about the experience and how it changed her
It all began last year when she saw an article in the New York Times about the Obermayer German Jewish History Awards
which honors Germans who work to preserve Jewish histor culture in their country
she immediately thought about Hans-Eberhard Berkemann
She tucked the article away until she had an opportunity to meet with her cousins and they decided to nominate the 59-year-old schoolteacher
They thought Berkemann deserved recognition for his work in restoring the Jewish cemeter saving the synagogue in Bad Sobernheim
When Berkemann was chosen to receive the award
Pressman set out on the journey to Germany with her husband
including her cousin Tom Lebach of North Falmouth
had escaped the atrocities of the Holocaust
he couldn't escape his "conflicting feelings," Pressman says
He knew how lucky he was to be in the United States
yet he also felt a certain guilt about those who didn't get away
Marum became painfully aware of that devastation when
as a soldier working as an interpreter in the U.S
he toured the Ohrdruf concentration camp in Germany
Pressman absorbed her father's feelings about the country where generations of their family lived
the country where so many Jews built a rich and productive culture
Her father remembered that the anti-Semitism in his town became so virulent after Hitler came to power that when he was 14
his parents sent him to school in Switzerland
There were fewer than a hundred Jews in Sobernheim
But there were the 6 million from all over Europe who were murdered during those terrible years
"My father felt he could never forget," she says
"And he felt he could never go back." Pressman thought she
would find a trip to Germany too disturbing
two of her father's sisters and their husbands spent time in Bad Sobernheim running the knitting mill her grandfather owned before the war
It is Tom Lebach's parents who lived in Germany for about 15 years beginning in the mid-'60s
who visited his parents there a number of times
feels differently about his mother's native land
She didn't come to the United States until after Kristallnacht (also called "Night of the Broken Glass," when on Nov
and hundreds of synagogues and thousands of Jewish businesses and homes were damaged or destroyed about 100 people were killed during the violence)
Yet what Lebach heard from his mother about her hometown in Germany was "not the bad
but I'm aware of the history of my family there."
Going there is a positive experience for him
an attorney who is a clerk magistrate at the Plymouth County Juvenile Court in Brockton
And he was happy to go with Pressman and introduce her to their parents' hometown
and in 1950 erected a monument in the Jewish cemetery there to the Jews who were killed during the Holocaust
It is this cemetery that Berkemann worked to preserve
and where Pressman went to see the graves of her ancestors
painted a picture of the old synagogue in Sobernheim at Berkemann's request
"He felt like the souls of the dead were watching him while he painted it," Pressman says
But she didn't see that painting until she visited Berkemann's home
"I could see how much my father struggled to do it," she says
"So many of his other works were exuberant
Pressman says she is glad she went because she "confronted her avoidance all these years."
"It was a wonderful way to connect with members of my family
"It gave me a glimmer of hope because of the work Berkemann and others are doing
They feel that Jewish history is an integral part of German history
There are lots of individuals there who are willing to face their past."
The Obermayer award ceremony was held in Berlin on Jan
which commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz
"I had a feeling that this was a wonderful thing

A world-leading scholar on the socio-psychological aspects underlying intractable conflicts
Daniel Bar-Tal is Professor Emeritus at the School of Education at Tel Aviv University
He has focussed on the Israel-Palestine dispute for several decades
working to understand the ‘ethos’ that shape the way societies view war and violence that mark their lives.Bar-Tal was the founding director of the Walter Lebach Research Institute for Jewish-Arab Coexistence through Education
He is the author of 25 books and more than 250 papers and book chapters
Bar-Tal speaks on the need for greater comprehension of the opposing points of view on both sides of the conflict
which has been edited for clarity and brevity
What’s your perspective of what’s happening in the Israel and Palestinian conflict right now
but nobody knows what their status is exactly
Hamas and Israel are trying to achieve their goals so there’s a lot of uncertainty
In your work Israel and Palestinian conflict: A cognitive analysis you speak of ‘belief acquisition and all alteration’
You argue that individuals might freeze their existing beliefs due to factors like information scarcity
Could you explain this further — how can this be used to gain a deeper understanding of the contrasting viewpoints on the Gaza and Israel situation
as you can see there is not much in common and they are not really in the way of negotiating really
because each side has a traumatic experience with the war and there’s the trauma is going on
I wanted your thoughts on two recent events and how they might be explained in terms of the social psychological perspectives
The first is the attack on the World Central Kitchen convoy
Investigations and media reports suggest that Israeli soldiers made a series of errors that led to the killing of aid workers
Can you shed light on what might have been at play there
Israel explained that the killings were a mistake
which means that officers on lower levels did not know and did not want to know about the coordination’s that were going on with the guard to the cars that were moving
mistakes happen and it’s not the first time in this war that has happened
The killing of about 100 Palestinians who were trying to interfere with the convoy’s that were transporting food was also so-called mistake
a lot of people are killed — even Israelis by Israelis
So it’s part of the war and it happens and as we know mostly same mistakes were on the Israeli side
which is the most powerful and active side in the war
The second event is the October 7 Hamas attacks
A recent Al Jazeera investigation shows that many of the claims of human rights atrocities such as beheading of babies
widespread rape etc repeated by Israeli politicians — indeed many others around the world — were untrue
Could you help frame this in terms of conflict scholarship
Both societies have experienced terrible trauma. Obviously, Jews experienced the Holocaust and for the Palestinians, the event that is still going on is a reminder of what they call a disaster in Nakba in 1948 where 700,000 Palestinian were expelled out of Palestine — they destroyed about 450 villages
so they claim that it’s a continuation of the traumas of they had in 1948
I feel it’s a continuation of something that was in the past
You don’t hear the stories of Palestinians
At the moment each of them is at the height of ethos of conflict
especially in the 1990’s when the process of peace was going on
But at the moment we are again experiencing a terrible and rare escalation of the conflict
with the escalation of the ethos conflict and culture of conflict
How would you assess the global media’s coverage of the ongoing unrest
What are your thoughts on Israel’s decision to restrict access to foreign journalists
It’s a common thing that was also done in the Vietnam War and the Iraq war- the government wants to have a control on the news that is coming out from the war and to control the journalists so they rely on reports of the army and the government
Media in Israel is very much a self-censorship and censored
so obviously it adheres to the ‘glorify’ theme of ethos
You can see the story of the kidnapped and the story of the soldiers who had fallen in Gaza
but you don’t see the destruction going on in Gaza and you don’t hear the stories of Palestinians
Israelis try to get support of the international community
You have pointed out that both Israelis and Palestinians firmly believe in the truth and objectivity of their respective beliefs
they view the other groups beliefs as incorrect or distorted
What do you think are necessary for these opposing sides to understand and possibly accept each other’s perspectives and beliefs
Where people are open minded and critical of what is going on, I assume that such a minority also exists on the Palestinian side where people see what is going on. But remember, it’s asymmetric conflict, it’s not symmetric. Conflict is asymmetric conflict
so Palestinians living 57 years under brutal occupation want liberation
Your social-psychological theory of intractable conflict provides explanations for the de-escalation and resolution of conflicts globally
You argue that for a society to avoid conflicts
it needs to develop a functional psychological repertoire of beliefs
How can this be implemented in societies to mitigate the risk of conflict escalation
as we are currently witnessing in Gaza and Israel
but when there are signs of winning on both sides
There were attempts at the beginning of the 90’s
2000 and 2008 in the long period of occupation where Israelis were negotiating with Palestinians
but at the moment both societies are in such a trauma so I can talk with you about it conceptually
You have also examined Palestinians’ sentiments towards the actions of Jews
you explained that Palestinians are primarily concerned with the treatment of the minority living in Israel and perceive a consistent violation of their human rights
What is your response to those who might deny or downplay the Palestinians’ allegations about their treatment by the Israelis
Nobody can. It’s absolutely clear that there are severe violations of human rights and international law. The Justice Court in The Hague will have to decide whether Israel is breaching international law and violating human rights
There are severe violations of human rights and international law
In your book Sinking into the Honey trap: The case of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
you describe mechanisms that enable Israelis to live in a way that exacerbates the conflict with Palestinians and overlook reality
and the increasing amount of footage showing the atrocities faced by Palestinians
could you share thoughts on how this situation has changed
it’s a kind of a recognition that war is going on and resistance is going on
You highlight a range of socialisation agents
and societal institutions (such as schools) that contribute to the dissemination and internalisation of certain ‘pro-conflict’ narratives and attitudes in society members
How important a role do you think the news media plays in instilling these beliefs
In Israeli media (except for a few channels) you can find information about what is going on in Israel and in the occupied area
The rest of the media is very much under influence of the situation
don’t try that much to look at the damage that was done to Palestinians
There are four channels in Israel and one is in the service of Netanyahu
so I don’t count it because it’s pure propaganda
Is there anything that journalists can do that you think or improvements that can be made to change what you’ve just said this situation
it’s a dependence on the journalists on getting information from the army and from the government so they moderate their reports in the favour of ethos of conflict
There are brave journalists that write and we are not in the situation of Russia or even India where journalists are completely blind
What does the future of Palestine and Israel look like to you
because in order to have a two-state solution
there is a need to move about 70,000 Jewish settlers from inside of the West Bank
Another solution that is going on is a one state solution
but here most of the Jews reject it and do not want to give civil rights to Palestinians
They want a next West Bank without giving civil rights
Apartheid is not acceptable in this century
It’s very hard to know and I would not predict a situation now

Philippines – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced on Thursday
it is cancelling the environmental compliance certificates (ECCs) of at least 7 housing and mining projects in the country
First on the list is Century Communities’ housing development project in the La Mesa Watershed
According to Environment Undersecretary for Legal Affairs Maria Paz Luna
Century Communities has not fulfilled two conditions: conducting a hydrologic study
and securing a tree-cutting permit from the DENR
“The DENR is constrained from giving them a tree-cutting permit because of the proclamation by the President in 2007 that this is already a critical watershed in a protected area
hence there is a condition that is impossible to fulfill
rendering their ECC ineffectual,” she told reporters on Thursday
They are withdrawing the project’s ECC
because there is no sense in keeping the certificate valid as a “planning tool”
DENR also cancelled the ECC of Sacobia Sun Valley Resort
a development of Donggwang Clark Corporation in Clark
The ECCs of at least 5 mining projects were also cancelled:
Environment Secretary Gina Lopez said Austral-Asia Link Mining Corporation is located in between two heritage sites in Davao Oriental: a bonsai forest
It is also close to the habitat of the Philippine eagle
“We have sent our people there to do a biodiversity assessment and the clear conclusion is that the place has tremendous biodiversity
can actually transform the whole area into an economic zone,” Lopez said
She said communities there are “very
very unhappy” about the mining that is happening in the area
the company has not submitted documentary requirements that the DENR needed
“But there are also severe biodiversity considerations that constrained us to say that this is really not going to work,” Luna explained
and Lebach Mining Corporation’s Nickel Deposit Mining Project were cancelled since their certificates have lapsed already
The environment department has denied the ECC application of Egerton Gold Philippines in Lobo
Those who oppose the proposed gold mine fear that the project may endanger the “center of the center of global shorefish biodiversity” – the Verde Island Passage
“Having a gold mine there is out of question
it says that the operation is incompatible with the biodiversity conservation status of the Verde Island Passage
which is the global center of marine biodiversity,” Lopez said
Luna said handling a mine of up to almost 300 hectares would be incompatible for a small town like Lobo
and with the biodiversity conservation status of Verde Island Passage
Aside from cancelling ECCs and denying applications for such
the DENR has also issued show-cause orders to 12 firms concerning their ECCs:
Lopez on Thursday singled out Benguet Mining Corporation
The secretary said they issued the show-cause order to the company for two reasons: they did not rehabilitate an open-pit mine for 25 years
and their negligence led to a toxic spill that affected a 1.8-km river in the area
it says if you have a pathetic environmental track record
by law be declared ineligible to mine,” she explained
The 12 firms have 7 days to explain why their ECCs should not be cancelled
and why they should not be imposed with a fine for failure to meet the conditions in their ECCs
