CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The Michigan Court of Appeals has affirmed the convictions and sentence of a Chippewa County man serving life in prison for second-degree murder.
Jeremy Lehre, 22, was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder in the November 2017 death of Wesley Cook. Lehre was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in February 2019 in Chippewa County 50th Circuit Court for the second-degree murder charge.
The jury also convicted Lehre of tampering with evidence, larceny of a building and and second-degree home invasion
The jury found Lehre not guilty of first-degree murder
Lehre appealed his convictions and sentences
mostly arguing his attorney should have admitted evidence of his limited intellectual capacity to explain his confused statements to police after the murder.
The Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed Lehre’s convictions and sentences in an unpublished opinion issued June 24.
Lehre’s defense attorney sought to admit evidence from a medical doctor
stating he intended to show Lehre had a “limited intellectual capacity,” according to the opinion
The court assumed counsel wanted to introduce evidence of a “diminished capacity” and refused to allow testimony from the doctor
A few weeks after trial, Lehre’s defense attorney was dismissed due to “a breakdown in the attorney-client relationship,” according to the opinion
A motion for a new trial was denied.
The appeals court ruled Lehre failed to show a reasonable probability that the outcome of the trial would have been different had the doctor testified
The court also stated there was “strong evidence” provided that Lehre assaulted and murdered Cook.
The Court of Appeals also stated both the circuit court and Lehre’s attorney advised him of his right to testify and that the record is silent as to why he chose to testify.
The appeals court also ruled Lehre’s argument that the circuit court committed evidentiary error when it refused to admit evidence of his limited intellectual capacity was meritless. The court ruled Lehre didn’t show it’s more probable than not that the error would affect the outcome of the trial.
Lehre is incarcerated at Michigan Reformatory in Ionia, according to the Department of Corrections Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS)
Aaron Lehre, cousin of Jeremy Lehre, was sentenced to 75 months in prison in December 2018 for second-degree home invasion and accessory after the fact for his involvement in the incident

From when they enroll at university to when they complete their studies
every student goes through different phases that can often be challenging
What are the key things to consider in shaping one’s own study path
An inspirational answer to this question was provided by UZH President Michael Schaepman in his laudatory speech to mark this year’s Tag der Lehre in which he recounted his own personal educational journey
He emphasized that the end goal often only becomes apparent when you look back and it’s crucial to follow your own interests
and also have the courage to pursue unconventional paths
“I too chose the wrong path on a few occasions
Today I can say I’m glad I did so!” says Schaepman
The Tag der Lehre is a real highlight on the yearly calendar at the University of Zurich
As a valuable platform for engaging and swapping ideas
it provides instructors and students with the opportunity to discuss the latest developments and challenges within teaching
This year’s motto was Shaping Student Journeys
teaching staff and students were able to participate actively in events and gain valuable insights to help them in their teaching and studies
program coordinators from different departments and offices discussed how curricula should be designed to have a positive
Other workshops highlighted the potential for learning environments
self-organized learning and game-based learning to promote problem-solving and team skills
A panel discussion explored the question of what makes a successful study program
This revealed that it’s not just about acquiring specialist knowledge and getting good grades
Students who take responsibility for their own studies and know their own strengths and weaknesses will also be successful
The experts on the panel agreed that acquiring social and emotional skills is absolutely vital – not just in studying for a degree
but also for a person’s future career
you’ll be better able to deal with stressful situations and failures.
Levels of academic success vary and so do the paths that students follow at UZH
“Students who enroll for a degree at UZH set out on a journey full of signposts
forks and junctions,” emphasized Gabriele Siegert
Deputy President and Vice President Education and Student Affairs
in her speech at the ceremonial evening event
“There’s no such thing as a perfect study pathway; rather there are lots of individual learning paths that open up new horizons.” Degree courses are individual processes that UZH wants to support in the best way possible
The instructors also have an important role to play: “As experienced guides
provide guidance and help students find the right paths.”
Every course of study is also defined by key milestones – from the first exams and the completion of the basic lectures to projects and internships
One particularly crucial element is the semester papers that serve as a barometer of academic progress and provide valuable insights into each student’s personal development
The highlight of the day was a great celebration of these academic milestones: 61 students received a semester award in recognition of their brilliant academic papers in which they examined original questions within their subject
The graduates from the higher education programs
including the CAS in Higher Education and Teaching Skills
and the recipients of the Orelli Award from the Faculty of Law were also honored for their outstanding achievements
The event culminated with convivial drinks in Lichthof
teaching staff and guests were able to engage in stimulating conversations
Students who have written outstanding semester papers are put forward by the faculties and presented with a semester award by UZH

Ambassador Ron and Rhoda Dermer (at left) are honored at the March of the Living's gala in Miami on Jan
At the 35th anniversary gala of the March of the Living
Israeli Minister Ron Dermer said that the lesson of the Holocaust is that “the Jewish people need power.”
who previously served as Israel’s ambassador to the United States and now serves as the Israeli minister of strategic affairs
was the main honoree of the gala alongside his wife
which took place at the Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus
also included a tribute to Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau
the former Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Israel.
“The Holocaust took everything away from the Jewish people
It ultimately took away their lives,” Dermer said
“But it is very important not to take the Holocaust itself away from the Jewish people
Because there has been an attempt in recent years to universalize the Holocaust
And I understand why people want to do that
because they want it to resonate with people outside of the Jewish community
“What is the lesson of the Holocaust to the Jews
Is the lesson that we have to teach tolerance
Did we need six million to die to teach tolerance?… We didn’t need the Holocaust to teach tolerance
The lesson of the Holocaust is that the Jewish people need power
“Jews are uniquely uncomfortable with the idea of power because there’s a price of power,” he said
I would rather be sovereign and imperfect.”
which he called “the most surreal moment that I’ve had… in my entire life.” While outside the camp’s crematorium
he received a secure call from Israel’s and the United States’ national security advisers about an impending American airstrike in Syria and how Israel would be involved in the operation
and while we were talking about who’s going to bomb what when
I had an image of a five-story chimney to my left and a three-story mound of human ash to my right — the ultimate symbol of Jewish powerlessness — and here I was
privileged to be the ambassador of the sovereign Jewish state of Israel
speaking to the most important ally that we have.”
Dermer — who has served for decades as a close adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — said that his top two priorities as minister were ensuring that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon
and to “expand the circle of peace” between Israel and countries in the Arab world that grew through the 2020 Abraham Accords
He also hopes that Israel “will be the most important ally of the United States in the 21st century.”
“Prime Minister Netanyahu is determined to expand it and we hope to work very closely with the Biden administration,” Dermer said
“I think the policy towards Iran is a critical part of expanding that because I think it opens the space for Arab leaders to move into a public alliance with Israel as we face this common enemy together.”

the head of the Institute of Laser Physics decided to create an extraordinary learning site where young people could gain insight into physics
The goal was to inspire enthusiasm for and an understanding of the natural sciences outside the classroom and without grades—ideally
the inspiration lasts when young people start careers
this has led to physics-related projects for young people of practically all ages: Light & Schools—a school lab for elementary and secondary school children—and an advanced internship in the Department of Physics
Elementary and secondary school students can learn from one another here because the transparent labs allow groups to get a glimpse of what other groups are working on

interdisciplinarity and innovation in teaching and learning were the core themes of this year’s Tag der Lehre
Vice President Education and Student Affairs
opened her speech in the main lecture hall with the topic of AI: “It has now developed to such a point that it can pass exams and write decent texts.” As a house of knowledge
the University of Zurich must teach students how to handle these new technologies and should facilitate exchange and discussion about artificial intelligence
“We want to create knowledge for all and to shape teaching in such a way that there are no barriers preventing people from benefiting from it,” said Siegert
“Topics such as ensuring lectures are accessible and digital teaching materials are available are just as important as recognizing the diversity of the people who teach
research and study at our university.”
mutually inspiring exchanges and lively discussions
opportunities to talk and exchange ideas about current hot topics were plentiful
whether at the exhibition of innovative teaching projects in the Lichthof
one of the five workshops offered for teaching staff
at the networking lunch or at the closing reception in the Lichthof
We report below on just two of the many workshops on offer in the densely packed and varied program of Tag der Lehre
In the workshop titled “AI: Good Practices at UZH” led by Carina Klein of the Educational Development Office
UZH teaching staff from various disciplines provided insights into possible scenarios in which AI could be used in teaching
“During the last year it has come to our attention that teaching staff are increasingly interested in finding out how they can usefully integrate generative AI tools into their courses and hearing from other instructors about their experiences with using them,” says Klein
explaining why she chose to run such a workshop
five instructors gave brief presentations of their ideas
such as integrating ChatGPT into teaching in an educationally useful way
for example by including answers from the tool in classroom discussions and critically reflecting on the AI responses
students get to discuss the subject and apply what they have learned
and at the same time become familiar with how the tool works and with its strengths and weaknesses
The speakers all agreed on one point: an important reason for addressing generative AI in class is to teach students how to use these tools competently and with awareness of the drawbacks
Other discussion issues raised in response to the short presentations included course planning using AI and the use of artificial intelligence in the academic writing process. To conclude, Carina Klein introduced the workshop participants to the Teaching Tools platform
educational methods and further support on the topic of AI use in teaching
All the papers from the workshop have also been published on the platform (https://teachingtools.uzh.ch/en/good-practice/ki-good-practices-an-der-uzh)
“This means all teaching staff who were not able to attend Tag der Lehre can read up on the topics and get inspiration for their own courses,” said Klein
Another workshop offered by the Educational Development Office focused on ideas and approaches for teaching heterogeneous groups of students
especially as found in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary courses
Workshop leaders Hannah Lora Freeman from the Innovation and Digital Education team and Eleni Spiroudis of the School for Transdisciplinary Studies began by asking participants to share their own experiences
the importance of clearly emphasizing the goal of interdisciplinary teaching at the beginning of the course became clear: by bringing together students and teaching staff from different disciplines
it becomes possible to look at academic questions or real-world challenges from different perspectives and with the inclusion of knowledge from society
The workshop participants were also in agreement that students in interdisciplinary courses should be given enough time to find out which subject areas their fellow students came from
“Learning from each other is explicitly encouraged,” says Hannah Freeman
Another issue that came up in workshop was how challenging it is for instructors of interdisciplinary courses to design an appropriate assessment
Students are used to different forms of assessment depending on which subject areas they come from
“For experienced students from the humanities
the idea of writing an essay at the end of a seminar is not a big surprise
while for students from the natural sciences
essay writing is not a form of assessment that they know and have practice in,” explains Eleni Spiroudis
It is therefore important that instructors communicate their expectations for the assessment early and clearly
and if necessary offer practice sessions and provide best-practice examples
Even though dealing with heterogenous groups in interdisciplinary courses brings particular challenges
the workshop participants unanimously agreed that they also offered great opportunities for all involved: inter- and transdisciplinary teaching stimulates critical thinking
opens up new possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration and widens one’s own professional horizons
a spotlight was shone on the winners of the semester awards and the Faculty of Law’s Orelli awards as well as on the graduates of the Teaching Skills Program and the CAS in University Teaching and Learning
Gabriele Siegert invited all attendees to join the closing drinks reception and to look at the exhibition on display in the Lichthof
The exhibition showcases innovative teaching projects that have received funding from the UZH Teaching Fund
and displays posters about the Teaching Tools platform
Visitors to the exhibition were able to try out AI chatbots developed by students and use virtual reality to discover the complex anatomy of the ear
